The Algarve
The Algarve offers all you would wish wish for in a sun-soaked winter escape. You’ll certainly appreciate Albufeira, with it’s myriad of sandy shores, whitewashed churches and authentic restaurants. Vilamoura is an upmarket resort with six golf courses nearby and you’re sure to be tempted by it’s chic marina lined with cocktail bars. To slow the pace down, set your sights on Alvor to enjoy its riverside boardwalks or discover the palm-lined promenades along Montegordo. A sun seekers paradise For more than four decades, visitors from all over the world have flocked to the Algarve in search of sun, fun and adventure. From the hustle and bustle of Faro to the quiet splendour of Albufeira and Vilamoura, there’s something for everyone here. Golf courses, marinas, lush sandy beaches and coves are all dotted around the shore, while historic towns like Tavira provide those seeking to immerse themselves in the local culture with enough to whet their appetite. In the swing of things Oceanico Golf in Vilamoura has an astonishing seven courses, with many of them used for big professional tournaments where avid fans can watch Europe’s finest tee off. Towards the coast, water sports are a big deal, particularly around Lagos where kitesurfing and water-skiing are popular with holidaymakers and visitors. Polvo Watersports in Vilamoura offer tours as well as lessons in sailing and surfing.
Historic heart The biggest city in the Algarve is Faro, which has a charming Old Town district. The city’s cathedral and Archaeological Museum are among its highlights, while it’s a good place to go shopping. History buffs will also like to visit Museu de Portimão, with its wide range of exhibitions dedicated to life way back when in this visually pleasing part of Portugal. Did you know? Sagres Point at the southwest edge of the Algarve was considered the ‘World’s End’ in antiquity. Nightlife Alvor has a relaxed approach to nightlife. You’ll find family-run bars where you can enjoy live music with the locals. Madeira

Pools & Beaches Madeira is famous for its lidos, or outdoor pools – you’ll find them at Funchal and Canico. Calheta, meanwhile, offers two man-made golden-sand beaches with stunning mountain views. And Machico has a new beach made from sand imported from the Western Sahara Resorts to suit your taste Calheta, on the southwest coast, has a beautiful marina and a clifftop arts centre, plus plenty of old churches to explore. Canico, meanwhile, has a traditional village square, and a modern part dotted with fancy villas and hotels. And if it’s malls, markets and restaurants you’re after, there’s the capital, Funchal. Get Active The waters around the island are great for surfing, scuba diving or big-game fishing. Or take a boat and watch the whales and dolphins – there are some 20 species swimming in these waters. On land, meanwhile, it’s all about mountain walks or even canyoning.
