Jill and Natalie met through their children (they have 2 each), who all went to the same school. Since they started the business ‘The Great Little Cake Company’, they’ve gone from strength to strength. These talented women have appeared on Wedding TV, published two books: ‘Bake Me I’m Yours....Whoopie Pies, and ‘Cake Decorating with the Kids’. They have demonstrated their techniques and projects at sugar-craft and baking shows, and at the same time, baked and decorated thousands of cakes for hundreds of customers. Originally from Cardiff and now living and working in Carmarthenshire, Catherine Povey is a Welsh milliner whose work is sold and displayed around the world. Her creative talent has been recognised by both the National Museum of Wales and the Cardiff Story museum, where she has pieces displayed in their current collections. DESIGNER DIVA CLARE JENKINS In her interview with My-Creative Diva, Clare shares with us how her passion for up-cycling lead to the development of her successful soft furnishing business based in Wales. Having spent over 25 years in retail I decided it was about time to start my own business combining my love of history, Welsh textiles, up-cycling and my love for a cosy, comfortable home – so here I am in Cwtch, Bridgend. I have always been surrounded by Welsh blankets, having been passed down through generations of my own family. Each piece is unique and is hand-crafted with care from my home to yours. Where do you live and why do you enjoy living there? I live in Ogmore by Sea, South Wales. I love its freshness and seasonal beauty. What do you think is one of the most important values of a Creative Diva? First of all it’s having the idea and then having the drive and determination to create a business from that idea. Like most women, a true diva is juggling with time. She is constantly working at caring for her family whilst still giving her business the attention it requires to succeed. 9

What led you into the business of vintage cushion making? I love cushions, my Welsh home, history and retail – I’m living the dream! What is unique about your soft furnishings? Each piece is unique, my aim is never to make the same piece twice and I always welcome my customers making suggestions on how they would like their cushion so they can be in the driving seat….where else can you get that? Why did you choose to use Welsh blankets as your creative medium? I love what Welsh blankets have meant to Welsh families over the centuries. I love the history about the woollen mills, I love to hear about what life was like working in the mills. I love the colours, the weaves, the textures…..need I say more? What other items do you offer to your customers? At the shop I sell an eclectic mix of hand-crafted wares all made by local crafters. My husband David makes the most gorgeous driftwood mirrors sourced from the Heritage Coastline, slate wine racks and placemats from Welsh Slate and woven willow from ‘Out To Learn Willow’ of Ogmore by Sea.We also offer a range of chocolates, mugs, blankets and also a selection of DMC threads, wools and cross stitch kits for fellow crafters. Is there a designer who is a major inspiration for your work? Cath Kidson is obviously an influence but other than that no, all my pieces are inspired by the blankets themselves. Please share with us how you marketed your products before you took on the lease of a shop? I love meeting people and have spent three years trading at small and large craft fairs.
Do you sew from home or do you have a designated crafting space? What is your favourite tool? Why does it work for you? I sew from my workshop at home and my favourite tool is my Singer 411G sewing machine. It hails from the 1960s…. it was my mum’s. What are your future goals and plans? My aim is to continue to live the dream and to establish myself further. In my personal life I plan to spend more time with my family. In my business life my goal is to continue to laugh and have fun with my products and to make lovely things to make people smile.

EDITOR’S SPECIAL GUEST Laura Thomas is an award winning woven textile artist and designer specialising in producing striking textile artworks for the contemporary interior. Laura is based in Wales. Here she shares with us her passion for weaving and textile art.

Where were you born and raised? Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire. Where do you live now and what do you love most about your home? After my studies in Carmarthen, Birmingham, London and Sussex, I decided I wanted to establish my studio back in Wales. After some time in Cardiff, I’m now based in Llantrisant.What I love most about my home is my family living in it. What led you to your current creative business? From early childhood I knew I was going to be an artist or designer of some description. It was only when I opted to study textiles at degree level that the possibility of specialising in weaving presented itself. It was a real light-bulb moment when I first saw the weave room encircled with floor-to-ceiling shelves full of yarns. The principle of transforming yarn into cloth captivated me and has ever since. I have been self employed since finishing my studies in 2003. What is the most distinctive aspect of your work that you enjoy? My work is very untypical for a weaver, and indeed, much of what I produce might not look like a textile. I like to surprise and challenge the prevailing assumption as to what a weaver ‘does’. Much of my work is about celebrating the beauty of the unwoven warp thread, creating eyepopping patterns or optical effects, exploring unusual ways of capturing colour transitions and merging disciplines. I encapsulate ‘impossible’ thread constructions in acrylic resin or glass laminates; create woven drawings and wrap turned wood in jewel coloured threads. I also have an enduring passion for creating updated Welsh double cloth blankets. Have you attended many classes or workshops? If so who was the most inspiring? Virtually all my formal learning was done on my BA, MA and Design Research Fellowships in woven textiles. At the Royal College of Art, Ann Sutton was a hugely inspirational Visiting Tutor and she remains a valued friend and mentor to this day. I’ve only attended one workshop since leaving formal education: passementerie weaving with the amazing Jessica Light. Jessica is one of the few remaining passementerie hand weavers and so it was an absolute treat to learn some very unusual techniques with her. What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your work? My allergy to keeping on top of my financial records! I seem to spend every Christmas in a frenzy getting my records together in order to do my tax return! Do you keep a journal of ideas and how do you keep yourself focused and organised? I always carry a notebook with me so I can keep a note of new ideas INTERVIEW CONTINUES

wherever I might be. As for keeping focused and organised: if I didn’t write ‘to do’ lists I’d be utterly lost! Are you exhibiting in any galleries or shows now or in the future? I predominantly work to commission but examples of my work can always be seen at Craft in the Bay, Oriel Mostyn, Ruthin Craft Centre, Llantarnam Grange and the Mission Gallery. Jewellery Diva Sian Hamilton Interview
Sian is a jewellery designer and current editor of Making Jewellery magazine. I have always been artistic and was lucky to have parents that supported that. I went through school excelling in art and design. I then moved on to Art College, where I completed a 3D-design BA degree. From then I’ve been designing in different industries for 20 years. From ceramics and wedding dresses to greetings cards it’s been pretty varied. I simply love all crafts and am lucky to be good at many different types. Where were you born and raised? I was born in Bucks but spent most of my childhood in Somerset. Where do you live now and what do you love most about your home? I currently live in West Surrey and am renovating the house I bought with my husband 3 years ago, so I don’t love much about it right now but I have just tiled my first floor, only the downstairs loo but it looks beautiful in grey slate! Are you a DIY renovation style Diva? I have to be, you should see the house we bought, it needed everything doing! My husband is also a DIY God, phew. You are a consultant, what does that involve in your everyday working life? I’m the freelance editor of Making Jewellery magazine and that takes about 3 days a week of my time for the rest of the time I’m a jeweller, making and selling jewellery. My life has to be very organised. I juggle my work to fit – having a good life work balance as well. What is the most distinctive aspect of your work that you enjoy? Being the boss! If I want a 2 hour coffee break with my sisters I take it. For other women who dream of running their own business and to be able to work from home, what advice would you share with them? It’s an advantage to be very organised and self-motivated; if you are not naturally organised and motivated you will find working at home hard as there are always lots of distractions. 16

What does a magazine editor do? I come up with ideas and control the content of what goes in to the magazine, commissioning designers and writers to make a diverse and interesting magazine for our readers. Making Jewellery is a project based magazine; I also have to proof-read and make sure all the project content makes sense so the tutorials are easy to follow.That’s the ‘nut-shell’ version! What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome? Recently my challenge was to learn to be an editor almost over night, as I had never had anything to do with publishing before. I was taking over from Joan Gordon, she believed in me and gave me the courage to go for it and try. I’ve loved it ever since. What excites you most about actually making jewellery? I love the process of constructing as much as the finished item. It’s about how the materials go together that I like the most. Do you keep a journal of ideas and how do you keep yourself focused and organised? I keep an ideas folder on my computer as I find a huge amount of ideas on-line. I also have sketchbooks and I have been known to sketch a design on a train ticket as that was all I had and if I don’t get the idea down on paper quickly, I forget it. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and who would you choose to spend time with? It’s rather hard to choose, but I think I’d like to have tea with Jane Austen as I’m a massive fan of her work and I’d love to ask her about some of her characters. What is your favourite magazine and why? Ok so I have to say my mag! Making Jewellery but I also subscribe to a bunch of mags on my iPad, my current favourite read is O (Oprah’s mag).

Of all the various types of cooking, I think that baking can often seem the hardest to accomplish. I’m a big fan of guesswork in the kitchen – I guess measurements, I substitute ingredients at whim and tend to cook anything and everything at 180 degrees it until I think it is probably done. But baking is much more of an art form and certainly more technical, so unless you are experienced, thorough instructions and a good recipe book are essential. Mastering The Art of Baking is an absolute bible, with more than 280 easy to follow recipes that will guide you through the process, from common ingredients and essential techniques to equipment and a guide to pastry and bread. The book is clearly presented and easy to follow, and it is sprinkled with tips such as the ‘secrets to a successful meringue’! The recipes are varied and I think the first ones that I’ll tackle will be the jumbo chocolate fudge cookies, vanilla butter cake and berry tarts. However I’m a savoury girl at heart and there are plenty of options there too, including parmesan biscuits, spinach and feta muffins, lots of bread recipes and even crumpets! Although baking is undoubtedly challenging, it is equally rewarding. It’s the right time of year for comfort food and let’s face it, the smell of freshly baked bread or cake filling your house is pretty hard to beat! 24

The Complete Calligrapher will introduce you to the materials and tools that have changed little over the centuries then take you through the basics such as ruling lines, holding the open and making your first marks. You are encouraged to really look at letters and how they are constructed so that you can produce a matching set. A variety of alphabets are introduced and workbook sections allow you to practise your new techniques. I didn’t expect to find this book as interesting as I did. Many of us love to draw but never think to apply these skills to lettering. However, once mastered, your skills can be used for all kinds of projects from invitations and gift tags to place settings and letterheads. BAKING DIVAS JILL COLLINS + NATALIE SAVILLE We found we shared a common passion for designing and creating cakes which we nurtured independently for many years until deciding to collaborate in 2007. We set up our own business because we both love the creative side of baking. For many years, we made and decorated cakes for our own family celebrations, and loved every aspect of the design and execution. Turning a plain sponge into a work of art is incredibly satisfying, and 5 years on, we still get the same buzz when we’ve finished one of our beautiful wedding or celebration cakes for a client. We love the variety and the challenge – no two weeks are ever the same, but for every cake we make, our aim is to produce a creation that is unique, eye catching and tailored to meet each client’s own special requirements. Where is your business based? North London Is there a renowned baker who is a major inspiration for your work? We don’t really take inspiration from any one particular baker but we avidly read cookbooks and baking blogs and try out endless new recipes and flavours. Like everything, cake trends are constantly evolving and we like to keep up to date with changing tastes. What do you think is one of the most important values of a Creative Diva? To have the confidence to take on new challenges and stretch yourself – the sense of achievement when we create a beautiful (and sometimes very technically difficult!) cake is worth the worry and hard work. how happy it makes our brides and other clients when they finally get to see them! For anyone who may be new to your craft how can they learn some of the skills involved? The only way is to practice! Take on as many cakes as you can – even cakes which are outside your comfort zone, and refine and try out new techniques and approaches on the job. We started off charging very little for our cakes, so we had lots of work, but also gained lots of experience. We also find that with two of us, if one can’t work out how to do something, the other one usually can! Also, look at the industry magazines, and go to shows for ideas and inspiration– Squires Kitchen is great for both. What is unique about your business and your cakes? We are both perfectionists when it comes to cakes, and will always go the extra mile adding details and extras to make our cakes the best they can be. We bounce ideas off each other – and also complement each other very well – recognising that we have different strengths and playing to them. We always use the best ingredients too, which make our cakes taste as good as they look! We also love what we do, and think that this comes through in our work. Do you have any tips you would like to share with our readers? Invest in a portable clothes steamer! Seriously, this piece of equipment is invaluable to finish off a cake – it removes all trace of icing sugar from coloured icing, and cleans a cake up beautifully What are your future goals and plans? With two books under our belt, we are now looking to do a third. We love working out new designs, and translating them into achievable projects. We write well together, so hopefully book number 3 won’t be too far away. We also want to make sure we maintain our main business, and continue to design and produce beautiful cakes.

Our Australian correspondent Elizabeth Zernike, brings us a fascinating interview with Cellular Healer Tracey Rhodes. I have always been a seer and an intuitive. At the age of twelve I realised that when I was around people they would pour their heart and soul out to me. People feel safe with me and the essence of my energy bubbles up within them which helps to give them the courage to face what it is that they need to face to feel whole, complete and in harmony with life. I have always been optimistic and have always known with every fibre of my being that something better is always coming if you let go of the past, accept the test of the moment and allow the blessing of the situation to flow through you. I was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and have had the great pleasure of living in Sydney,Yeppoon, Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast; I suppose you could say I have lived many different lives. My father was an Australian Rugby League footballer and my mother a part-time model so I was thrust into the spotlight at a very early age. This was a rewarding experience because it gave me the wonderful opportunity to come in contact with a variety of people who have helped me understand more fully the different ways of being and to see what happens in their energy field when people feel different emotions. It has really set me up for the work I do today. Simply life and the beauty that is all around inspires me. It is the place where we gain wisdom, love and the strength we need to handle everyday living.

We had great massages, Ayurveda healings and fantastic food. If there was just one thing that you could do to improve your life, what would it be? To totally surrender to the flow of life, let go and know that every situation is for my growth and that all is well, always. I really am pretty good at it, but sometimes I forget to practice what I preach. What is your signature dish when entertaining friends at home? NATIONAL INSURANCE CONTRIBUTIONS Being self-employed you may also need to pay National Insurance contributions (NIC’s). You only pay National Insurance if your profits are above £5,595 but you’ll have to pay more when your profits rise above £7,605. • If your profits are less than £5,595 then you can apply for a Class 2 exception certificate. This is sometimes called a ‘Certificate of Small Earnings Exception. If you apply for this and it is granted you will not pay any Class 2 or Class 4 NIC’s. • If your profits are between £5,595 and £7,605 you will only pay Class 2 NIC’s at £2.65 per week, you will not be required to pay Class 4 NIC’s. • On earnings £7,605 - £42,475 you will pay £2.65 per week plus 9% of your profits. EXHIBITION LIGHT FROM THE MIDDLE EAST: NEW PHOTOGRAPHY 13 November 2012–7 April 2013 Light from the Middle East: New Photography is the first major museum exhibition of contemporary photography from and about the Middle East. Featuring more than 90 works by some of the most exciting artists from the region it shows the creative responses to the social challenges and political upheavals that have shaped the Middle East over the past 20 years and includes recent work made following the revolution in Egypt. The photographs present multiple viewpoints of a region where collisions between personal, social, religious and political life can be emotive and complex. This exhibition has been made possible by the establishment of the Art Fund Collection of Middle Eastern Photography at the V&A and the British Museum. The exhibition explores the ways in which these artists investigate the language and techniques of photography. Some use the camera to record or bear witness, while others subvert that process to reveal how surprisingly unreliable a photograph can be. The works range from documentary photographs and highly staged tableaux to images manipulated beyond recognition.The variety of approaches is appropriate to the complexities of a vast and diverse region. Light from the Middle East is divided into three sections, Recording, Reframing and Resisting, each of which focuses on a different approach to the medium of photography. The photographers in this section use a range of approaches to exploit and explore the camera’s capacity to record.

Victoria and Albert Museum THE WORLD’S GREATEST MUSEUM OF ART AND DESIGN Opening times 10.00 to17.45 daily + 10.00 to 22.00 Fridays If a personal visit to the V&A isn’t possible feast your eyes on some of the world’s most remarkable collections at their website: these three images are from Amateur British colonial photographer. Alexander Greenlaw was the first to extensively photograph the site in 1855-56. The resulting series of waxed paper negatives were made available to the V&A and printed in 1910. These are some of the earliest known prints. This photograph shows the kalyana mandapa,Vitthala temple complex, Hampi (Vijayanagara). Vijayanagara, meaning ‘city of victory’ was the imperial capital of the last great Hindu empire to rule south India. Established in 1336 and named after its capital, the Vijayanagara empire expanded and prospered throughout the next century. In 1565, this impressive city was sacked by armies from the Deccan sultanates and never rebuilt. Now known as the ‘Group of Monuments at Hampi’, the site represents the empire’s finest and highest concentration of architecture. Classified into religious, courtly and military buildings, its pillared audience halls and towering gateways are its stylistic hallmarks. MILLINERY DIVA CATHERINE POVEY Originally from Cardiff and now living and working in Carmarthenshire, Catherine Povey is a Welsh milliner whose work is sold and displayed around the world. Her creative talent has been recognised by both the National Museum of Wales and the Cardiff Story museum, where she has pieces displayed in their current collections. Her work is both artistic and commercial, with pieces being sold from John Lewis, Oxford Street to the Burjamin Centre, Dubai. In her interview with Joan Gordon, Catherine further shares with us information about her millinery and her life Where were you born and raised? I was born and brought up in Cardiff, South Wales and went to the University of Swansea. After moving around and living in London, Manchester and Australia I came home again to Wales as so many of us do. Where do you live now and what do you love most about your home? I now live in Gwernogle, a tiny hamlet in Carmarthenshire, South West Wales. I live in a wooden house in the middle of the Brechfa Forest completely hidden away with my husband and three sons. Home is tranquil and immersed in nature. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenging living here but we belong to the most friendly and supportive community you could ever hope to find. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t imagine wanting to live anywhere else. I love everything about it (except perhaps the mud). 39

What led you to your current creative business? I have always been creative in my spare time but worked in research and as a speech therapist. I started my millinery business when my second son was born so that I could work at home and bring up my children. What is the most distinctive aspect of your work that you enjoy? I love being able to express myself creatively. It’s something I have always wanted to do but I never found the right outlet. Now if something inspires me I can channel that inspiration into making a hat or headpiece. I love to create millinery art pieces for exhibitions and the cat walk. Have you attended many classes or workshops? If so who was the most inspiring? I have mostly taught myself, bringing up my boys and setting up the business hasn’t left me much time to go on courses. However, Philip Wright, of Walter Wright in Luton, has been incredibly inspiring and instructive. We met in Dubai at an exhibition and I have learnt an awful lot from him about millinery and the business. He is a millinery legend coming from many generations of milliners and hat makers, it’s in his blood. Who is your favourite milliner? I have many favourites, there are great people out there doing wonderful work. Of the big names Stephen Jones is my favourite, along with Dai Rees, an inspirational Welsh milliner (although I think he’s concentrating on sculpture these days). But there are many more I admire. What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your work? I think that would be working from home. I did so for many years while my boys were very young but I found it very difficult. I found it hard to be disciplined and get my head down and work when there was washing to put on, tea to cook, somebody at the door, etc etc. And other people do assume that when you work from home you are available for coffee and a chat at the drop of a hat (as it were!). It is very sociable and lovely but when you have commissions piling up you don’t always have the time. And work is always there, looking at you, so when you sit down to relax in the evening you often end up picking up a bit of sewing. Have you dabbled in other mediums? I have played around with lots of arty and crafty things over the years but I have never been good enough at anything else to get anywhere. I feel that I have finally found my medium and I don’t see myself moving away from millinery. 40

Where do you gain inspiration from for your designs? Inspiration comes from every part of life. Most obviously at the moment from nature as I live surrounded by trees and plants and rivers and hills (and mud!). But sometimes materials inspire me, unusual bits and pieces like beetle wings or bits of scrap; beautiful fabrics that I see and just have to buy. Sometimes people are the inspiration, I like to make pieces that complement the person and reflect some aspect of their personality. And sometimes it’s a concept, an idea without a physical form, which is most challenging but the most rewarding. Are you exhibiting in any boutiques or fashion shows now or in the future? Currently I am in the middle of organising myself as I have just opened a new studio in Llandeilo so I have no time for anything else. It is very exciting to have my own place to work and see customers. I recently took part in Cheltenham Fashion Week which was great fun and I hope to do that again next year. I may do the BurJuman International Millinery Exhibition in Dubai next Spring but I’m not sure I will have the time now. There are new challenges to having your own place. Where do you go when you need serious ‘Me Time’? I head for the hills with my husband and the dogs.

Our international correspondent and Jewellery Diva – Lanzajewel - Anne MacLeod Crisp, brings us the latest news on colours that are on-trend for jewellery makers this season. Having recovered from the orange and purple colour mix from last year (2012) this New Year brings us a startling emerald green, this being the principal colour for 2013. According to reliable sources we have several colours such as lime green, bright yellow, dark blue and a poppy red to accompany the main colour. Floral patterns are back and these large dramatic flower dresses make a beautiful display on an island like Lanzarote where the sun shines most of the year. Garments and jewellery designed and made in contrasts such as black and white never lose their popularity. They are considered in the fashion industry to be the classic colours for all seasons. It may be of interest to our readers to know that most Spanish ladies wear black and white for the Christmas and New Year festivities. EXPLORING LATIMER, CHESHAM, UK

Latimer is a village and civil parish that sits on the border between Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, in England. The parish forms part of the Buckinghamshire district of Chiltern. Latimer parish includes the villages of Latimer, Ley Hill and Tyler's Hill, Latimer House, the mansion that you see here is not the original Elizabethan house. The former manor was once home to members of the Cavendish family who became the barons Chesham. The Third Baron Chesham was a commander in the Boer War. It was in the original house where Charles I was imprisoned in 1647 and Charles II took refuge there before fleeing abroad. In 1830 the house was gutted by fire and the present red brick Tudor style mansion that I recently stayed in was built in 1863. The house has been converted into a conference centre with accommodation buildings, a pool and gym built within the grounds. PHOTO CREDIT JOAN GORDON 46

My husband and I stayed here for four nights over Christmas.The accommodation rates for the four nights including Christmas and Boxing Day totalled £168 which was very reasonable and a good English breakfast was on offer each morning at an additional £9 per person. An added benefit was that there weren’t any conferences being held in the hotel, so guests were able to use the old library, the games room and bar all situated within the old manor. These rooms are all very attractive with lovely views over the surrounding countryside. Unfortunately our stay wasn’t the relaxing break we were looking forward to. The morning before we were to arrive at the hotel, I rang to inquire as to what time we could check in. The reply from the hotel was that we didn’t have a booking! After several more phone calls to both the De Vere main booking office and the hotel we were informed that the person who had taken our booking had typed my name into the reservation back to front, instead of Joan Gordon they had written ‘Gordon Joan’ and had split the booking into two separate reservations. We weren’t given any explanation or an apology as to why this mix up occurred. Eventually it was sorted but it was upsetting at the time as we were looking forward to sharing Christmas with our family in Rickmansworth and for two hours the day before Christmas Eve it looked as if we didn’t have any accommodation. When making the original booking we requested a quiet room. On arriving at the hotel we were placed in a room that was clean and modern but on the ground floor. As we soon discovered there is almost no sound proofing in the new wing, you can hear all the noise from the room above you plus we had the family from ‘Play It Loud’ staying in the two rooms adjoining ours. Three small children were in a room next to ours with their parents and a baby staying in a room, not connected to theirs, in fact it was further down the hallway. The children ran riot for three days and despite complaints to the main desk, nothing was done about it. As the hotel was booked out we couldn’t move to another room so for three days we had to put up with screaming kids, loud television, slamming doors and the bumps and thumps from the room above. Despite our accommodation problems, we liked the village of Latimer and the surrounding countryside. At the time of the English Civil War Latimer belonged to the Earl of Devonshire. The small village includes 17th and 18th century cottages around a triangular village green with an original water pump. The church of St Mary Magdelane is well worth a visit, it dates back to the 13th Century and was rebuilt by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1867. Ley Hill is part of Latimer parish and includes a Common, the Crown pub, the Swan pub and a Methodist Chapel. The nearest railway station to Latimer is Chalfont. For anyone who enjoys country walks then the Chilterns offer some marvellous walks with spectacular views and cosy pubs that serve locally sourced food and brewed beers. We would certainly visit this area again but we’ll find a comfortable B&B to stay in on our next trip to ensure our holiday is both enjoyable and relaxing. Wishing you safe travels, Joan.

TRANQUIL READING NOOK A day bed is the perfect piece of furniture for multi-purposing. By day it can be used as a lounge room couch or somewhere to snuggle up for a guaranteed relaxing read. By night it converts to a comfy spare bed for visitors. Paint the walls a soft pastel shade to enhance the space or paste them with a luxurious wall paper in delicate shades of pinks, creams or greys. Create a French provincial distressed finish on a folding table with an undercoat of soft grey coloured emulsion. Once the paint has dried, give it another coat of off white, matt paint. Allow the paint the dry for 24 hours. Using a fine grain sanding block, rub back the top layer in various areas on the table top and legs to expose the undercoat.Wipe the table with a damp cloth and finish with a layer of clear matt polyurethane or wax to protect the surface. Purchase a stand lamp with an extendable arm that will provide you with a quality light by which to read. Choose a selection of tactile monochrome toned soft furnishings to further enhance the sense of comfort and luxury. Make sure the rugs, cushion covers and throws can be machine washed if they are to be lounged upon, on a regular basis. SPRINGTIME DINING TABLE Create a stunning pringtime dining table…
Entertain in style by embellishing beautiful coloured glass carver plates with tiny glass mosaics and ethereal engraving to create a talking point at your stylish dinner parties this Spring. The glass carvers act as the base of your crockery collection inspiring a beautiful look for the new season. Simply buy the items listed below and follow our instructions. Your unique dining table will be the envy of all your friends! TOOLS AND MATERIALS Dremel Engraver Dremel Versaflame 20 x 10 mm glass mosaic 3/16” self-adhesive copper foil tape Solder containing flux Glass glue Glass carver plates MAKE IT UP STEP ONE Apply self-adhesive copper tape around the edges of approximately forty 20 x 10mm mosaic tiles.This will be enough to decorate a carver plate with a diameter of 30 centimetres. Then apply two strips of copper tape around the edge of the carver plate, spacing them 20mm apart. Burnish the tape smooth using a bone folder or the back of a teaspoon. Glue the mosaics around the plate so that the top and

bottom edges touch the tapes, spacing the mosaics randomly as shown. The glass glue requires sunlight to bond. Tip: Choose plates that have a defined rim area. Creating a decorative border around the outer edge of the rim will ensure that the pattern is seen when the carver is in use. Small-sized pieces of multi-coloured glass mosaic in one single line will achieve a delicate look and will allow you to fit both mosaic and engraving onto the rim. STEP TWO Then, using the Versaflame and soldering tip, solder around the individual pieces of mosaic, and around the rim twice to cover the copper tape. Tip: When you have soldered around the entire rim, remove the soldering tip and use a naked flame to soften the solder and smooth out any small irregularities caused by the soldering tip. Avoid overheating the solder or the glass. STEP THREE Take your Dremel Engraver and engrave lines in between the mosaic tiles, containing them within the border and positioning them randomly as shown. CONSTRUCTING A RADIATOR COVER TOOLS AND MATERIALS Dremel® TRIO™ Dremel® TRIO™ multipurpose carbide cutting bit TR563 Dremel® TRIO™ chamfer router bit TR618 Dremel® TRIO™ sanding mandrel TR407 and the P120 sanding band TR432. DIFFICULTY RATING Three stars – intermediate MAKE IT UP STEP ONE Measure your radiator and buy a piece of MDF. This should measure 13mm thick and have a total area that’s at least one third larger than the surface area of your radiator.This is in order to give you room to cut all the sections for the cover from it. When you get home, mark out the sections with a pencil for your radiator cover top, sides and front. STEP TWO Using the multipurpose carbide cutting bit TR563, cut out your sections. As well as the top, sides and front solid sections, cut out the ventilation holes beneath the top shelf, for the grill and at the base. Set at speed 8. STEP THREE Then take your Dremel TRIO with the multipurpose carbide cutting bit TR563 and cut out a section of die cut patterned radiator grill hardboard with a minimum thickness of 13mm. This is to go over the main opening/s on the front of your radiator. Make sure that the section you cut is larger by at least 10 cms than the opening/s on your design. STEP FOUR Then, go back to your MDF cut out section where the patterned radiator grill will be inset and give it a decorative and neat finish by using the Dremel TRIO and Chamfer Router Bit TR618 to bevel the edge of the wood facing outwards. Carry on doing this on all the edges where you want a decorative finish. Use speed 6. STEP FIVE Lightly sand all the edges which you have cut using the Dremel TRIO plus sanding mandrel TR407 and the P120 sanding band TR432. STEP SIX Now, with your Dremel Glue Gun and 7mm clear glue stick, glue the patterned radiator grill to the reverse of the main MDF face.

STEP SEVEN With your Dremel Glue Gun and 7mm clear glue stick, glue all the sections together, then screw the main face onto the sides and finally screw the top onto the box you have made. Fit over skirting board and pipes to mount against the wall. Using wood filler fill over screws and any blemishes, then prime, paint and finally secure to wall with internal brackets. KNOTTED CORD KIT This kit, from Beaders Companion, is simple to make and suitable for beginners or more experienced beaders. All components to make a necklace, a memory wire bangle and simple earrings are included. Maggie Jones talks you through the process.
COMPONENTS Three lengths of cotton cord; six headpins; one pair earring wires, four coils of memory wire numerous e-beads; 20 round glass beads; 16 larger assorted glass beads; one large heart shaped focal. The beads are all glass, and silver lined. (pic 2)
TOOLS AND MATERIALS Beaders Companion ‘Create’ knotted cord kit. Scissors to cut the cord. Round nose pliers and flush cutters or a three in one jewellery tool. Bead board (optional), bead mat (optional), or corrugated card.
MAKING UP THE KIT Plan your pattern in advance – I use a beading design board for this,(pic 3) but a piece of felt or corrugated card will also help you to lay out the beads in a pattern. For the necklace, the techniques explained use simple knots to hold the beads in place. (pic 4, 5) For the bracelet, using memory wire is very simple – the only difficult part is when curling the memory wire into a loop. Be firm with the wire, and take it slowly.The earrings also use simple techniques. You will probably have some beads and wires left over. PRESENTATION The packaging is functional, with several clear packets which are mounted onto cardboard. The clear cellophane packets mean you see exactly what you are getting. (pic 1) INSTRUCTIONS AND CONTENTS There are 5 small packets with components attached to the presentation card. Carefully detach those from the card, as the instructions are on the reverse of the card. The instructions have both photographs and line drawings included.The photos of the finished products show suggestions of how your makes will look, rather than being exact.This is a good feature of this kit: you don’t have to follow their pattern exactly and have flexibility to create your own version of the make. DECORATE WITH FLOWERS Single flowers such as hydrangeas, roses, peonies or gerbera look good with most foliage. Use a variety of shapes if mixing your flowers to give the arrangement more impact. Flowers arranged in a vase can add elegance and style to your home. Streamlined glass vases bring a touch of modern chic, while aluminium containers add a contemporary look to any room. Decorating with flowers is an inexpensive way of adding colour, texture and visual pleasure to your home décor. FLORISTRY TIPS • Flowers left too long in water can give off bacteria that can catch on to the inside of a vase where it continue to grow.Add a teaspoon of bleach to the water before placing flowers into the vase to prevent bacterial growth. • To condition flowers from your garden,cut them the night before and put them in a bucket of luke warm water filled up to about two inches below the flower head.The warm water will be absorbed by the flower stem up towards the head of the flower. Store the flowers overnight in a cool dark place. • Flowers bought from a florist will already have been conditioned so they may be used immediately. • When you cut your stems, cut them at an angle with a sharp clean knife or kitchen shears. • Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line and if you are using roses, remove the thorns by running a sharp knife down the stem of the flower.Fill your vase with water and flower food to ensure your arrangement remains fresh and colourful. PRESERVING TIPS • In cold climates bring your geraniums indoors during the winter. Place them in containers where they will benefit from filtered light and feed them every few months with plant food. • Cut the heads off hydrangeas and hang them from string in an airing cupboard.The heads will preserve as they dry and the flowers may then be used in dried arrangements.

Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s modern version of Shambala bracelets often feature crystal-encrusted bead/s sometimes called disco balls or Shambala beads, together with hematite beads or other semiprecious beads. There are two different types of disco balls available, those with a metal base and those with a clay base. The metal beads are heavier while the clay versions are lighter but more hard wearing, as the crystals are firmly set in the clay before it is fired. January 2013

CLEAR NAIL VARNISH
To help get cord through small holes, trim cord end at an angle, apply clear nail varnish to the end of the cord and allow to dry. This will provide a stiff point to allow easier passage through bead holes.
Step 1: Fold the long, thicker cord in half to find the middle. Lay the thinner cord over the centre fold, with approx 10cm extending above. Make a square knot around the thin cord with thicker cord. Refer to the “Step 1, Square Knot” box on opposite page. (Hint: you may find it helpful to secure the thin cord on a clipboard, or tie it to a drawer pull or door handle as you work.)

Cut excess thick cords about 2mm from the last knot. Use the heat from a lighter or match to melt the ends of the nylon cord. The nylon will shrink back as it melts, creating a neatly sealed knot. Be extremely careful with the flame; the idea is to melt the ends, not catch them on fire! You should hold the flame close to, but not directly on, the cord ends. Note: Alternatively you can cut the cord close to the knot and glue well with something like GS hypo cement. January 2013

When you have perhaps 6 or 8 square knots, try on the bracelet to see how it fits. Add more knots if needed. You want enough square knots so that when you tighten the bracelet by pulling on the centre cord ends, it feels comfortable with no gap between sets of square knots.

Here we feature some of our favourite snoods that you can purchase or if you enjoy sewing, purchase some polar fleece, soft fake fur or a loose knitted fabric then follow our simple step by step instructions to make your own.
MATERIALS & TOOLS 150cm Lx 80cmW polar fleece 1 x ball point sewing machine needle Sewing machine and iron Scissors and a fine hand sewing needle
METHOD OF WORK STEP 1 Lay your piece of fabric out flat with the right side facing up. STEP 2 Fold the fabric in half lengthways matching the corners and raw edges. STEP 3 Pin both edges of the length of fabric together (with the right side of the fabric facing in), to form a seam that makes the fleece into a long tube. STEP 4 If using polar fleece sew with a straight stitch from one end of the tube to the other back stitching securely at the beginning and end of the stitching. For knits use a small and narrow zigzag stitch. STEP 5 Turn the tube of fabric right side out and press the seam flat with a warm iron. STEP 6 At each end of the tube, press the raw edges in, forming a 1cm deep circular hem on each end. Press these hems flat with an iron. STEP 7 Pin the circular ends to each other so that they form a neat join. Slip-stitch the ends together with neat little stitches. Press the joined seams to neaten your stitching and the snood is now ready for use.

Cheese is the ultimate in savoury comfort foods and on a cold winters night there’s nothing better than tucking into a hot cheesy dip. DIVINE FOOD CHEESY TIPS HOT SAVOURY CHEESE DIP • Hard cheeses tolerate high temperatures better than INGREDIENTS soft cheese. • Exposing any cheese to high heat for too long can cause it to curdle, toughen and separate. • When making a cheese sauce it is best to place the cheese in a saucepan suspended over a second pan filled with hot water. • Cheese is best handled cold and should be stored in the fridge. • When grating or cubing, semi-soft and hard cheeses are the most suitable. • Soft cheeses are ideal for making cheese cakes, cold dips or for spreading. • When grilling foods with cheese on top, place the oven tray so that the food is about 8 -15cm from the heat and grill until the cheese is just melted. Cheese is best measured by weight. 113.40 grams of natural cheese = 1 cup grated 170.10 grams of softer cheeses, like Blue or Feta = 1 cup crumbled 84.0.49 grams of hard cheese = 1 cup grated
226.8 grams of softened cream cheese, cut into cubes shopping list 1½ cups sour cream ½ kilo of cooked crispy crumbled bacon (omit for vegetarians) 1 shallot finely sliced and chopped 1 pack of spring vegetable dried soup 2 cups of grated mature cheese 1 jar or tin of asparagus mashed to a pulp 1 large sourdough loaf with the top cut off and the bread removed to create a shell. MIX IT UP Preheat oven to 180C. In a large bowl, mix together the softened cream cheese and sour cream. Add the bacon, dried soup, shallot, mature cheese and asparagus. Stir all the ingredients together until fully mixed. Pour the mixture into the sourdough shell and cover entirely with tin foil. Bake at 180C for 60 minutes. Check to see if the cheese mix is sufficiently melted. Extend the cooking time if required. Serve with breadsticks and sourdough pieces of bread as dippers.

It’s the perfect drink to impress your guests or a delightful drink to enjoy after a hard day’s work. INGREDIENTS 30ml De Kuyper Crème De Cassis Champagne Chilled champagne flute MIX IT UP Pour the champagne into a chilled glass, to the amount you prefer into the flute but make sure you leave enough room for the De Kuyper Crème De Cassis. Add the De Kuyper Crème De Cassis, slowly so it has time to mix and color the champagne. Serve with a slice of strawberry on the glass rim. CHILLED CITRUS TEA This refreshing tea will brighten your mood and give you an energy lift. INGREDIENTS 3 tea bags 2 cups boiling water 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 828 ml lemon-lime soda chilled 3/4 cup sugar 1 tray of ice cubes 1/2 cup fresh orange juice Lemon and lime slices to garnish MIX IT UP Place the tea bags into a pot. Pour boiling water over tea. Let it stand for 5 minutes. Remove bags from the pot. Add sugar and stir until all is dissolved. Place ice cubes into cups. Pour over the hot tea. Add the lemon and orange juice to the tea. Stir briskly for several seconds until the mixture is cold. Stir in chilled lemon-lime carbonated beverage. Garnish with fruit slices and serve. Lightly dampen the rim of several glasses. Dip the rims into fine castor sugar, fill the glass with punch and serve immediately.
