GREETINGS FROM DOWN UNDER

Hello, it’s been a busy and creative time for me whilst working from my home in Somerset Dam, Queensland. The countryside is looking a real picture, to me it as a living water colour. If you turn to page 52 you’ll understand why I am so drawn to this area. A few weeks ago I was invited to be a guest speaker at The Esk Art Society’s bi-monthly meeting, it was a pleasure to engage with several of the members. I was grateful to be invited to share information about our magazine and my skills as a fine silver clay jewellery tutor. If you turn to pages 12 through to 19 you’ll find inspirational work created by some of their talented members. Next month is the launch of their art competition and exhibition which I will be attending. I’ll post more images of the work displayed at this event in Issue 11. On page 20, we introduce you to a very well respected Australian artist Lorraine Emerson. Lorraine’s painting ‘Hebel Connection’, illustrated on our front cover is a stunning piece of work. Our other guests featured this month include Tony Warren, Irina Tretyakova and Yan Fahey. Tony is an Australian fashion and jewellery designer /wholesaler based on the Gold Coast in South Queensland, Irina grew up in Russia but now resides in the UK, she is a designer and maker of miniature crocheted dolls. Yan is our new travel contributor and a very dear friend of mine. I’m excited that she has agreed to share her adventures with our readers. As always, you’ll find hours of entertaining reading in this issue with informative articles from fellow artists, photographers and designers. We hope you are finding the new website easy to navigate and we look forward to hearing from you about what you like, what you don’t and what you’d like to see more of, in the future. THIS MONTH’S DIVAS LORRAINE EMERSON ARTIST DIVA
Tenterfield was the birthplace of Artist Lorraine Emerson. It was a small country town situated on the Queensland and New South Wales border. Her first home is believed to have been in a tent on the riverbanks of the Mole River. Today, this is far removed from her studio that is nestled high in the hills of King Scrub. She can recall receiving a huge paint set one Christmas when she was quite young. Lorraine shared, “I must have been painting and drawing well before this, unfortunately I can’t remember, however I can remember how excited I was to receive that gift.” Family have told her that she was always drawing one thing or another. Today she is still drawing one thing or another in between trying to organise an Open Studio Trail. Lorraine has always been inspired to have her own studio space where she can share knowledge and interact with other artists. She feels that such a place to show art, critique art and share conversation with other artists and friends over a glass of wine is an important part of her existence. SOMERSET ART SOCIETY INC DIVINE ARTISTS
Four years ago a group of artists decided to form the ‘Somerset Art Society Incorporated’. The Society provided a much needed forum for local artists who, up until that time, had been struggling individually to promote and sell their work. Based in the region of the Brisbane Valley in Queensland Australia, the Society has organised opportunities to exhibit and sell art in a variety of different venues including, a marquee in the town park, an old church, a private home, the CWA hall and the Council Meeting Room. Irina was born in Russia. She lived near the city of Perm in the Ural Mountains where the summer is usually warm. Here she enjoyed swimming in the river, walking in the forests, gathering mushrooms and berries, fishing and watching campfires in the evenings. She experienced true winters, with big banks of snow, frost that bites your nose and cheeks, long dark winter nights and sports such as skating, skiing, and sledding. She is now domiciled in Southend on Sea in the UK, with her husband and son. Her creative passion is crocheting dolls. My wonder-lust first began when I was 13. I worked travelling around Malaysia during the school holidays for 6 weeks. When I had to start school again, I became restless and decided that I wanted to be an air stewardess to fulfil my travel bug but I stopped growing and did not meet the height restriction. My current focus is to travel around the UK catching up and reconnecting with friends and family I have not seen for years. In her interview with Joan, Irina talks about her creative family and her fascination with making miniature crocheted dolls. How did you become interested in crocheting? My granny had shown me how to crochet when I was nearly five as was common for almost every little girl in Russia. Once I mastered the craft, I made clothes for my dolls. In my school years I spent all my free time creating something for my lovely dolls such as clothing, furniture, little cozy rooms and homes in the corners of our house. I used anything that I could find from cloth scraps and yarn to card-stock and even house hold rubbish. Most of all I loved tiny kewpie dolls. I loved the fact that I could put my dolls in my pocket and take them everywhere with me including their accessories and furniture. My interest in miniatures and the desire to create carried on into my adult life. I really love making tiny things. What career path did you originally follow? I grew up in a creative family. One of my grandfathers was an artist, another granny was keen on sewing and knitting and my Mum still embroiders glorious cross stitched pictures. Her house looks like an art gallery.The spirit of creating always permeated our home. When I had to decide on my future after finishing high school I chose a creative path and became an architect which seemed an interesting and fun profession. Studying in the Architectural Academy helped me to realize that I was capable of developing my own designs, no matter the size of the project. What inspired you to make crochet dolls? I started crocheting dolls when I was looking after my 9

newborn son more than twelve years ago. On visiting the ART-PERM art and craft show, I saw a woman selling small crocheted animals. When I saw them I thought to myself, “I could make nicer ones”! It was this inspirational moment when I realised exactly what I wanted to do.This was the handiest craft imaginable for a Mum to engage in whilst looking after a toddler. Crocheting was for me, a craft that was mobile and flexible to which I could add my artistic expression. A crochet hook and a small ball of cotton thread were all I needed to realize my ideas! This was the first step towards my passion for making crocheted dolls - otherwise called amigurumi. How did the name Fancyknittles originate? The name Fancyknittles came from three words: fancy, knit and little. I gave this family name to my little creations that are quite small in size (just 10-12 cm) and young in their age. I design all my dolls and don’t use patterns. I cannot explain particularly why I fell in love with making doll children but obviously it came from my childhood love of miniatures. As I create each doll my happy childhood memories are wrestled out of my soul like birds in search of happiness. My Fancyknittles are not modern and fashionable, but rather a bit provincial and naive. Perhaps they are a part of me or represent me as a person... Do you create a story about each doll to make them lifelike? Every one of my crochet children has their own personality. They are interested in different hobbies and each one has their own personal belongings. I love to imagine their life and create a story about each one. Evan, for example, is very keen on fishing and recently he was lucky to catch a Gold Fish. He looks proud and serious. On looking at him you can see he hasn’t asked for any silly wishes! Little Ewie is so shy and quiet! The only best friend she’s got is her Teddy Bear! She speaks to him and he knows all her secrets. Two children, Mary and Chris, met each other on a skating rink and became good friends. Mary has taught Christopher how to skate... I also take photographs of my favourite dolls. I place them in different settings. Through my photographs they come alive. I can capture a precious moment as they run playing, climb the trees, break a mug or tell you why their homework isn’t done yet! Why don’t the dolls have faces? The fact that I haven’t painted or embroidered their faces is important. This is the best way to stir one’s imagination. Without faces you can create the doll’s mood, changing from sadness to happiness, displeasure to dreaminess... 10

I usually give each of my dolls some personal item that tells you about this child and it adds particular charm to my work because of its tiny size and realistic look. I create toys, fruit, berries, mushrooms, flowers and a wide variety of accessories. My latest inspiration was the Rocking Horse which became the favourite friend for several of my little children. I am really pleased and inspired when I see that people love my creations! I hope I will make many more members of the fast growing family of Fancyknittles!

Esk is a small rural town, 100km west of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland. It is the administration centre of the Somerset Region. Four years ago a group of artists decided to form the ‘Somerset Art Society Incorporated’. The Society provided a much needed forum for local artists who, up until that time, had been struggling individually to promote and sell their work. The Society organised opportunities to exhibit and sell art in a variety of different venues including, a marquee in the town park, an old church, a private home, the CWA hall and the Council Meeting Room. 16

One of the aims of the Society was to lobby Council to establish a Regional Art Gallery as the lack of a dedicated art space within the town was keenly felt. In 2010 any of the small spaces owned by Council would attract a daily fee of $130 which made art exhibitions expensive especially for individual showings.

ARTIST DIVA LORRAINE EMERSON Lorraine Emerson is a visual artist who works mainly from her studio, situated in the picturesque Dayboro Valley just 45km north west of Brisbane, Queensland. Lorraine’s creative work covers a variety of techniques and applications. These include inks, acrylic, mono printing, collage and encaustic on canvas or wood. She also enjoys creating wearable art such as unique felt scarves, hats and wraps using Australian merino fleece.

Lorraine’s studio is nestled high on a hillside with an ever changing view overlooking the Dayboro Valley. Amongst the smell and sounds of the Australian bush a tranquil studio setting is offered, complimented by large eucalyptus trees, wattles, king parrots and koalas. Lorraine is thankful to be able to work in such a peaceful environment surrounded by natural bushland. Most of her inspiration comes from her own journey through life, such as, childhood memories, thoughts, emotions and daily events. You are an artist who has worked with different mediums. What is your favourite? I would have to say that mixed media seems to satisfy my creative needs at present. I use a combination of inks, acrylics, mono printing, found objects, , conte, encaustics and collage. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Everywhere! Every day, I can be inspired by so many different things; a few words from a song, a passage from a book and even the sight of skeletal remains of fish in a dry creek bed in outback Australia. In general, I guess life itself. Would you say you had a particular style or styles? Yes, I believe I do. Especially when I create work from

the subconscious mind, these images, thoughts and emotions are from my inner sanctum. As well as working as an artist you also hold classes. How did your role as a teacher evolve? As a matter of fact it came about accidentally. A friend wanted to know how to paint so I offered to show her some of the basics. We covered such things as mark making, contour drawing, tonal scales and colour association. Of course it grew from there. Do you prefer to teach or to work on your own pieces? I enjoy both. Sharing my knowledge with others and being witness to their creativity gives me great satisfaction. You have had many exhibitions. Could you tell us about the one that was most memorable? Looking back over the years when I was just starting to show my work, I received notification that I had been invited to exhibit in The Parliamentary Annex in Brisbane. Of course, I was naïve to the significance of the invitation. What do you consider has been your greatest achievement? I would say the last painting that I am satisfied with. How do you market your artwork? As an artist I am more concerned about creating the work than selling it. I think that the internet has helped many artists sell their work direct to the public, including myself. What has been your greatest challenge to date and how did you resolve it? I would have to say committing myself to a solo exhibition has been my greatest challenge. The resolution to do that is a combination of an organized schedule, self – discipline, 22

determination and hard work. Your partner is also a well-known artist. How does this influence your work? I guess we are influenced by our surroundings even if we are unaware of it. What are your future plans? I have been inspired to work harder on my own paintings after my recent visit to the Gallery of Pro Hart in Broken Hill and The Victorian Art Society in Melbourne where our Great Australian Artists once worked. I have also volunteered to help organize a Pilot Programme for an Arts Trail in our surrounding area. Another project in 2013 will bring together a number of artists for an Open Day of Demonstrations to be held in the Vineyard at Ocean View Estates. The intention is to create a combination of artistic workshops where students are offered to partake in a package of food, wine, and accommodation. What is the next challenge for you personally? To learn more about the composition and application of encaustics and to apply that knowledge. Do you have any tips for new artists? Yes, study law, it pays better…If art is in your blood like it is in mine, one does not have a choice to abandon the desire to create art. I would say, be true to yourself, make your own marks and create your own work. We all have our own distinct signature. Art should be the same.

Yes that’s right, I’m drooling over another book devoted to fashion designers, but what makes this one different is that it doesn’t focus on fashion’s giants (no Dior or Chanel here) or the late, greats of fashion past. Instead it is devoted to the industry’s current brightest stars; ‘the 50 most creative and iconoclastic members of today’s fashion scene.’ The emphasis is on the designers rather than the brands, after all where would Burberry be without Christopher Bailey? And can you remember Celine before Phoebe Philo? These are the individuals shaping the current scene, from Sarah Burton whose wedding dress for Kate Middleton made her a household name, to the theatrics of the ever changing Gareth Pugh.There are even a few surprises including Victoria Beckham and the Olsen twins, who have successfully hushed the most cynical critics with several seasons of beautiful designs. Other favourites include the stunning prints by Mary Katrantzou and the always cool effortless chic of Parisian designer Isabel Marant.There are even names that had previously escaped my fashion radar and whom I will be keeping a watchful eye on from now on!

I must confess that when I hear the phrase ‘modern art’, my mind has a tendency to wander to the likes of Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst, and in all honesty that stuff just isn’t my cup of tea. So this book is a really great reminder that the term ‘modern art’ encapsulates all that the art world has offered since the era of great change that occurred in the 18th Century. The work featured is a small but compelling sample of modernism and the cultural changes that have influenced it; from the birth of impressionism and the harmony of fauvism, to the surrealist melting pot, pop art and commercial society. The text is concise but compelling, outlining artists’ backgrounds and motives, making it a really useful reference book. Many of my favourite names are here – Monet, Seurat, Van Gogh, Picasso, Hamilton, and Lichtenstein – alongside good size images of some of their greatest works. And for those of you who are into the more ‘modern’ modern art, yes you will find a preserved shark by Damien Hirst and a black square by Dan Flavin.They might not be to my taste but this is a well thought out cross section of all that modern art encompasses, sharks and all.

Many of us are looking back across the 20th Century for inspiration when decorating our homes, referencing times gone by to add a touch of character or variety to a room. The word retro is thrown about all too often but what does it actually refer to? Katherine believes it encompasses aspects of antique, kitsch and vintage from roughly the First World War to the mid 1980s. This offers a wide scope of design styles, especially when exploring influences from around the world, from Scandinavian beach chic to the bold plastic aesthetic of the 1960s. My personal favourite looks are the kitchens inspired by American diners from the 1950s, with bright colours, clean lines and plenty of chrome. Key furniture designers from various decades are included, along with useful tips and case studies featuring different interpretations of retro.This a really useful sourcebook, which for me has resulted in an irrational desire to track down a juke box, a 1960s sofa shaped like a pair of lips and a pineapple ice bucket!
The Great American Pin-Up by Charles G. Martignette & Louis K. Meisel, £12.99 Published by Taschen ISBN 978-3-8365-3244-0
From 1920 to 1970,American pin up images were all the rage.They were never considered fine art, often referred to in derogatory terms, and since condemned as far from politically correct. Yet they were hugely popular and played an integral role in everyday life, gracing calendars, posters and magazine covers. This beautiful book was first printed in 1996 and is easy to see why it is still popular; the images are now highly collectable and the artists’ skills are recognised outside of the subject matter.The typical pin up girl that springs to mind for most of us is well described by Meisel as ‘sexy but chaste and all American’. Certainly there is sauciness to many of them, but in comparison to the over sexualised imagery we have grown accustomed to today, they have an innocent charm too. From the house wife in her garden flashing a stocking clad thigh, to the woman in a glamorous evening dress, these images were used for everything from selling cigarettes to encouraging people to vote. Many of the genre’s biggest names are featured including Freeman Elliot, Bill Medcalf and Edward Runci. This book is simultaneously glamorous and nostalgic, a showcase of talented illustrators from an era when ‘sex sells ’was the mantra but, unlike today, a flash of cleavage or glimpse of thigh was often all that was needed!

TREASURES OF THE ROYAL COURTS: TUDORS, STUARTS AND THE RUSSIAN TSARS Supported by the Friends of the V&A 9 MARCH –14 JULY 2013 This exhibition examines the development of cultural diplomacy and trade between Britain and Russia from its origins in 1555 when the London Muscovy Company was founded. It reveals the majesty and pageantry of the royal courts of Henry VIII to Charles II and Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible) to the early Romanovs as they sought to strengthen their power against a backdrop of religious and social upheaval. Over 150 objects are displayed including spectacular examples of British and French silver from the Tsars’ Treasury sold through British merchants or given to Russia as diplomatic gifts by successive English ambassadors from the reigns of Elizabeth I to Charles II.Tailor-made suits of armour from the Greenwich workshop, jewellery such as the Barbor jewel, sumptuous textiles, furnishings, fine clothing and portraits of ambassadors, courtiers and monarchs reveal life at the royal courts between 1509 and 1685. BARBARA NESSIM: AN ARTFUL LIFE The first solo show in the UK of work by internationally renowned artist and illustrator Barbara Nessim was featured at the V&A from February to May 2013. Nessim’s distinctive line and style have graced the cover of nearly every major American magazine, including Time, Rolling Stone, and the New York Times. Her work ranges from provocative drawings and paintings that represent her underlying feminist views, to advertising campaigns for companies including Levis and Ralph Lauren. She was also one of the first professional illustrators to use the computer as an artistic tool. This display presented around 80 works spanning the incredible breadth of Nessim’s output from the 1960s to the 2000s and it included sketchbooks, prints, drawings, photographs, computer graphics, ceramics, artist’s books and other printed publications.

The main body of all of my garments are 100% cotton so they can breathe. I incorporate 10% rayon with 90% cotton whenever I use a black fabric for sleeves or skirts and creates a soft, natural fall with little creasing. Your accessory range of jewellery is extensive. THIS MONTH – THE THREE MANUAL SHOOTING MODES: WHAT ARE THEY? 1. MANUAL MODE: this mode puts you in full control of the three settings on your camera that control the exposure (commonly known as the exposure triangle). ISO, aperture and shutter speed. In manual you will be making all of those choices. 2. APERTURE PRIORITY: (A on Nikon, Av on Canon) this mode has you in control of two of the three exposure controls: ISO and aperture. The camera will select an appropriate shutter speed to give you a correct exposure. 3. SHUTTER PRIORITY: (S on Nikon,Tv on Canon) this mode once again puts you in control of two of the three exposure settings, this time it is ISO and shutter speed. The camera will select the aperture for a correct exposure. 38

EXAMPLE OF MANUAL MODE
USE PART MANUAL THEN FULL MANUAL You will notice that on your DSLR there is a dial similar to this one with lots of settings for you to choose from. The AUTO button tends to be the one many new users are stuck on but there are some options that allow you to be a little more creative in your images. I actually use the Aperture (A) and Shutter priority (S) modes more often than I use Manual. I choose Aperture Mode when I want to control depth of field (DoF). For example if I want to create shallow DoF for a portrait, people photos, or any time I want a blurred background (choose a large aperture like f2.8 or f1.8). If I want maximum detail and sharpness and greater detail (DoF) throughout the photo I choose a smaller aperture like f1.1 or smaller. I choose Shutter Mode when my top priority is controlling motion, either freezing or blurring it. Also when freezing, for subjects like sports or action, I will choose a faster shutter speed such as 1/500th or faster depending on the subject. Subjects like flowing water, waterfalls, or panning a moving subject I will select a slower shutter speed like 1/15th for panning and 2-5 seconds for flowing water. I switch to Manual Mode in a very few specific instances: Like doing a portrait where the subject is not moving and tricky night photography. Manual mode allows you to set both your aperture and shutter speed separately, without the camera automatically changing the other to suit. With this in mind, you can be more creative with your shots. For example, you can photograph a beach landscape keeping the aperture high (for example f/22) so everything is in focus, yet at the same time set a slow shutter speed to create dreamy, slow motion waves. LAMPWORK TECHNIQUES Let’s talk about frit…. Frit is little chunks of glass. Lampwork bead and glass vessel makers add these chunks to their base designs for decoration. I love it! Frit comes in several sizes from very fine to lovely big chunks.You can make it yourself by smashing glass with a crusher (1) or heating the glass rod and plunging it into clean cold water. The crusher I use which is illustrated here, came from Tuffnell Glass in the UK. It’s a monster. I dig it out and use it if I need a fair amount of frit, but for tiny bits I usually choose the cold water method. Not every piece of glass expands and contracts at the same temperature. This change in the density is known as the Coefficient of Expansion (COE). All pieces you fuse together need to have the same coefficient of expansion (COE). Most frit is 90 - 96 CoE, but you can also buy 104 CoE frit. This is perfect if you’re wary of mixing different types of glass together. Frit isn’t a “one trick pony”, there’s lots of ways of using it. The simplest method is surface decoration. Your bead is rolled into frit while it’s still glowing hot. You can get some really pretty beads that are made quickly using this method. When I’m making simple frit beads I like to use lots and lots of frit, this is where 104 CoE frit really comes into its own. (2) When using frit over silver glass, you’ll get a completely different effect. Here the beads become much more organic in design. For these beads, I used big chunks of frit. When working on beads like theses I usually choose size 2. (3) Frit may be used under encasing. (The term encasing refers 40

to melting and wrapping clear glass around a bead to magnify the surface decoration). This is where using frit can get really exciting as so many different effects may be created. As you may see here, the encasing layer of glass has magnified the effect of the frit used on these beads. If you intend to try this method use the frit sparingly as you need very little frit to create this type of pattern. You’ll also want your base bead to be very cool before you start encasing and be sure to melt just the encasing layer or your frit could spread and ruin the effect. (3) If you’re feeling really adventurous try imploding some frit. I used just a tiny amount of size 2 frit, approximately six or seven chunks to create the pattern in this imploded and encased bead pendant. This image shows gorgeous red imploded frit which was then added to a bead. The same red glass was used for the ribbed barrel beads with frit added for further decoration. (4) Working with frit is fantastic. I hope you try using it in your next bead project, have fun and experiment!

DIVINE SHARING I must admit I found the whole process rather daunting at first but persevered using the gorgeous wools and silks kindly supplied by Empress Mills. My mathematical and embroidery skills leave much to be desired but the attraction of the beautiful photographs in the book inspired me to give it a go. Illustrated here is my very first attempt but I’m sure with practice and patience I’ll soon have mastered this craft and will find ways of incorporating these decorative balls into my jewellery projects. If you’re looking for a challenging new craft to add to your bag of skills then I would certainly recommend you read this book and try your hand at Tamari. Temari has a meaning in Japanese; Te means hand and Mari, ball. Historically, Temari were constructed from the remnants of old kimonos. Pieces of silk fabric would be wadded up to form a ball, and then the wad would be wrapped with strips of fabric. These balls, once made were highly prized gifts representing friendship and loyalty and mainly made by the upper classes in Japan. Today, polystyrene balls are used instead of fabric. The first step is to wrap the ball with wool, and then silk.The next step involves the mathematical part of dividing the ball to create the various different patterns. In their excellent book, Dominique and Alban have illustrated designs such as Shihiro, Momoko, Jotaro, and Tensui, to name but a few. With a needle threaded with a strand of silk, you then proceed to use a simple stitch to cover the area that you have marked out. Using different coloured silks you cover the whole area with your design. 42

DIVINE SHARING stopping fermentation with the addition of a spirit (commonly brandy spirit or wine spirit).This addition of spirit kills the yeast and prevents the sugar from being metabolized. These wines are then aged in barrel for many years for tawny port, whilst vintage ports which are often drier in style, are bottled within the same year. INSIDER KNOWLEDGE Here is my best tip for those who wish to know what to buy for a wine drinker who seems to want for nothing. Vintage ports are fantastic gifts as they have considerable aging ability. In fact, they will improve and last for well over 20 years! Below I’ve offered a few more tips that may help when trying to match sweet wines with puddings or cheese. In my opinion, there is no better way to end a meal than with a delicious port or dessert wine of great structure.
DIVINE WINE DON JOE WARREN Sweet, Sweeter & the Sweetest.... Who can deny a lovely, sticky, viscous Bortrytis Riesling, Semillon or fortified wine at the end of a meal? “Not me”,I hear you say? Well I’m glad, because that is where we’ll be going in this article….. Bortrytis is a disease that affects grapes when there is wet weather or humid conditions. This can be detrimental to many vineyards. Noble rot, which occurs when there is fine sunny weather after humid and wet weather, is beneficial to the production of sweet wines.This form of fungus removes water from the grapes leaving behind a higher percent of solids, such as sugars, fruit acids and minerals. This removal of liquid, results in a more intense and highly concentrated juice. Grape varieties predominantly used for these wines are Semillon, Sauvignon and Riesling. If you are wishing to match a dessert wine with a sticky or dark chocolate fondant pudding, look for a vintage port or fortified wine with age. They give significantly more complexity and depth of flavour to match the richness of the dessert. The general rule, which also applies when combining wine and chocolate is, ‘the better the chocolate, the better the wine’! Please note, from an experienced chef that in this instance, the rule of thumb is: ‘the wine must also be sweeter than the chocolate infused desert’. Fortification of port and other wines is the process of 44

Cheers, Joe AFTER THE MAIN MEAL Cheese Platters Roqueforte and Sauternes are a classic combination, where sweetness in the wine is balanced by the creamy and saltiness of the cheese. Sticky Date Pudding Sticky date pudding pairs incredibly well with a Muscat, as these wines have characteristics of sultanas, raisins and spice that fit the mould perfectly! Chocolate Dark chocolate and port or even some dry red wines can match well here. The rule again applies;‘the better the chocolate the better the wine or port’.

When did you start your latest adventure abroad? On the 1st of March 2013, I started a 39 day cruise from Singapore to Southampton visiting Malaysia,Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Oman, Jordan, Egypt, Suez Canal, Greece, Italy, Spain, Morocco and Portugal. What countries have been the most exciting to visit? I’ll have to say Greece, Italy and Spain. I especially love Rome where you can walk around the city and at every turn, there is a beautiful monument or vista and so steeped in history. What really fires your mojo when you visit foreign countries? The difference in the architecture, culture, people and food. I love going to countries I haven’t been to before, breathing in the scent, soaking in the atmosphere and tucking into the local culinery specialities. If you were to choose three passions what would they be? Tavel, food and dance. I love tasting the local speciality food, wines and liquors. When I hear music, my feet start tapping and I want to dance, dance, dance.
I’d like to introduce you to one of our new contributors Yan Fahey. Yan is one of my closest friends. As a woman, I am in awe of her. Before arriving into the UK she was sailing a 65’ yacht single handed and cooking like a master chef whilst entertaining up to 40 tourists a day in her charter boat business based in Malaysia. She is a high energy woman who spends two hours every morning concentrating on her yoga to keep her body supple and her mind strong. We first met in Australia several years ago and have always had a strong bond even though over the past 10 years we’ve only caught up once, as our lives and paths took different directions. Yan is in the process of changing her life, she is a Diva on a mission. She is following an adventurous path, exploring the world and recording her experiences with her camera. What subjects are frequently appearing in your photos? Beautiful buildings, beachs, marinas and food markets with local produce. Where are you now as you write this article? I’m in London with my niece whom I haven’t seen for 6 years. A special bonus was meeting up with her paternal aunt who was visiting from Australia. I haven’t seen her for 15 years. We had a lot of fun catching up, eating out and shopping in London. Where will you be tomorrow? I shall be in Belfast visiting my Irish friend and his Madagascan wife who speaks with an Irish accent. She’s so cute. Will you be sharing further adventures with our readers? Yes, my next article will be sent from New York!

DIVINE SHARING TRAVEL DOWN UNDER GO WALK ABOUT WITH JOAN Hi there, this article is being written from my home in Australia. The district in which I live is called Somerset. My home is one of about eighty that are nestled in a small village at the base of a mountain range. I love living here especially in winter. The days are usually sunny with a top of around 20c and at night the temperatures drop to between 1c – 4c, which means during the day I can go kayaking or hiking and in the evenings when the temperature drops, I enjoy lighting the fire and relaxing over a good meal with family and friends. On this visit home our friend Mandy Nash is visiting with us. Mandy is a jewellery and felting designer and maker, she lives and works in Llantrisant Wales, in the same village that my husband and I are domiciled when not at home in Australia. It’s been wonderful to have our friend visit. We’re enjoying sharing this part of the world with her. One of the most pleasurable things about living here is the abundance of wildlife. As we live in a rural area we are lucky to have the pleasure of seeing kangaroos, wallabies, koala’s, dear and a variety of beautiful birds in their natural habitat. This year the countryside is looking like a picture postcard. After several floods, the pastures are green, the water reservoirs are full and the forests are looking healthy. It’s not always this beautiful. Only four years ago the local farmers and property owners were struggling with an eleven year drought. However, when Mother Nature decides to turn on her charm, the countryside recovers and blossoms when it receives a good drop of rain followed by glorious sunshine. 52

One of my favourite walks in this local is at Peach Trees camping grounds, which is within the Jimna State Forest. The campground is approximately 4km north of the township of Jimna. The Jimna State Forest is about 45km north of the rural town of Kilcoy where I shop for our food from the local grocer and butcher.What I enjoy most about walking at Peach Trees is viewing the wildlife and rainforest. As you leave the main parkland the hiking tracks meander along the Mary River, through open bush land and then into a literal rain forest. This circular walk takes about two hours if you’re walking at a relaxed pace and as you wander through the rain forest bellbirds tinkle, catbirds cry and whip-birds call uncannily like the real crack of a whip in their endeavours to attract a mate. It was to Peach Trees that I took Mandy for a picnic so that she could view kangaroos in the wild. As you can see from these photos the animals are well used to people and are naturally curious. The rainforest we walked through was very peaceful and we enjoyed listening to the birds and taking photos of the fungi, strangling fig and bunya pine trees. After a lunch of homemade pumpkin soup and damper (an Aussi traditional bread made without yeast) we made our way home via the Exchange pub in Kilcoy. I felt it my duty to introduce Mandy to a traditional Australian pub, which is just a tad different in décor to those she is familiar with in Wales. Next month I’ll be writing about a trip we made to the north east of my home to the coast and the open studio trail we explored at Boreen Point. Till then, safe travels, Joan May 2013

SHARING NOTES Personal Perfumes I get excited when a fashion house or similar brings out a new perfume. BUT they all seem to smell the same and I hate to think what chemicals are in them so, with this in mind, I’m going to write about how you can make your own individual perfumes. It’s really easy and great fun. You can devise mixtures for mood, season, personality - even colours (so I’m told! Haven’t investigated that one yet!!). You need a good pure base oil. I use Grapeseed because it’s very fine and so is absorbed quickly by the skin. If your skin is dry go for something heavier starting with almond oil and moving through to apricot oil. These base oils are odourless so won’t ‘colour’ your final mixture. To each 20ml of base oil you can add up to three essential oils. Anymore and you start to get ‘flavour blur’! A visit to a reputable retailer will allow you to smell the testers and decide what you like. You need small brown or blue glass bottles either with a dropper or not, as you wish - a very small funnel, the base oil and the essential oils of your choice. Equipment must be scrupulously clean.

MAKING UP THE KIT This kit is quick to make up, requiring only basic skills. I followed the instructions exactly, but I also slightly closed the S clasp to ensure it wouldn’t come apart from the leather. As the jump rings are of such high quality, you will need to be firm with them! (2,3,4)

DIVINE MAKE WOODEN BUTTERFLY HANGING MAKE A WOODEN BUTTERFLY HANGING WITH YOUR CHILDREN Create a fabulous wooden butterfly hanging and loop it over the end of a bed or hang it securely from the ceiling to create a lovely decorative mobile. Why not let your children have fun helping to paint and decorate the butterflies with you, supervising them to ensure their safety? All you have to do is purchase the items listed below and then follow our instructions. It’s a fun project to keep your little ones amused on a Sunday afternoon! MATERIALS + TOOLS Dremel 3000 Hobby Dremel Multi-Chuck (4486) Dremel Spiral Cutting Bit (561) Dremel Precision Drill Bit Set (628) Dremel SpeedClic Mandrel (SC402) Dremel SpeedClic Abrasive Buffs Coarse, Medium and Fine (511S,512S) Dremel VersaTip™ hot knife and hot blower head 3mm thick wood or mdf Safe paint for kids Cord Small coloured beads DIFFICULTY RATING Fairly difficult STEP 1 Draw the outline of the butterfly design onto a piece of paper, then cut out and trace around the edges onto pieces of light wood or MDF. Draw a large butterfly, and two smaller butterflies, or choose your own design. Take your Dremel 3000 Hobby, attach the Dremel Multi-Chuck (4486) and then select a Dremel Spiral Cutting Bit (561) and cut out the butterfly shapes from the wood. STEP 2 Smooth the edges of the cut out shapes using the Dremel 3000 Hobby fitted with the SpeedClic Mandrel (SC402) and a SpeedClic Abrasive Buff in, either, Coarse/ Medium (511s) or Fine(512s) depending on your needs (as shown). Then, drill holes slightly larger than the thickness of the cord through the top and bottom of each butterfly using the Dremel 3000 Hobby fitted with the Dremel Multi-Chuck and appropriate sized drill bit from the Dremel Precision Drill Bit Set (628). STEP 3 Paint the butterflies in bright colours and allow them to dry thoroughly. Use an embossing pen to outline and fill in some of the painted areas and sprinkle on embossing powder. Tap off the excess powder, then use the Dremel VersaTip with hot blower head to heat and fuse the powder. Decorate other areas of the butterflies with the Dremel VersaTip fitted with the Hot Knife wood burning tip. STEP 4 Join the butterflies together using the cord, forming a hanging loop above the large butterfly. Thread a few small beads onto the cord below the smallest butterfly and tie a secure knot. HOMEMADE HAND LOTION A rich and nourishing hand lotion may be easily made using only four ingredients. The lotion is free of chemicals and a third of the price of commercial products plus it will keep your hands lovely and soft. Make sure you use emulsifying wax not beeswax for this product so that it may be stored in a pump action container. INGREDIENTS • 11/4 cups hot water • 1/4 cup emulsifying wax • 1/4 cup olive oil • 36 drops essential oil METHOD OF WORK In a microwave proof measuring glass combine the olive oil and emulsifying wax. Place the glass into the the microwave set to medium high, heat it for one minute or until the wax is melted. Fill a regular sized coffee cup with water and place this into the microwave and heat for one minute. Add the essential oil into the melted wax and olive oil mixture. Stir to comine. Pour the hot water into the wax and olive oil mixture. It will turn a milky white colour. Pour the hot lotion into a ceramic container and leave it overnight to cool. The next day, seal the container with the pump lid.The lotion is now ready for use. To fragrance the washing detergent, add 20 drops of pure essential lavender oil to each 2 litre plastic bottle.

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS Stuck for a gift for the person who has everything and wants for nothing? These lovely flower seed gift packs are an ideal token of affection and a gift that will last and offer pleasure to the recipient for weeks to come. You don’t need to break the bank to let someone you love, know that you’re thinking of them. Sometimes a little gift can make the person receiving it feel extra special. These sweet packets of seeds can easily be popped into the post with a matching card and won’t attract expensive or un-necessary delivery fees. And remember, flowers are the language of love. Do a little research before sending plants, flowers or seeds. A note explaining what emotion the particular flower represents will make your gift more personal. Flower seeds can be planted in a pot or a small garden and will very little effort they will blossom for several weeks. Tips for growing flowers: • Use a good quality potting mix if you intend to plant the seeds into pots. • Read the instructions on the packet to ensure that the seeds are planted in the right location. Some may require full sunlight, others partial shade. • Depending on the seed type, plant them slightly spaced apart or sprinkle onto the soil. Cover the seeds with about 2cms of compost and lightly moisten the soil with a spray of water. • As the shoots appear if they are too clustered, separate and replant the roots of each plant so they have space to develop and grow. • Don’t let the soil dry out completely, keep it moist but not too wet. • Once flowers appear feed the plants with a natural fertiliser to further enhance their growth. Once flowering, feed them once a fortnight. • As flowers dye, de-head the plants to encourage new growth. • Bulbs may be dug up once the plants have died down, wrapped in paper and stored in a cool dry place to be replanted the following year. • Seeds from flowering plants such as poppies can be captured by allowing the flowers to dry. Shake the seeds in the centre of the flower into a small paper bag. These seeds may be used the following spring.

LEMON FRUIT FLAN Make an impression with this quick and easy to make fruit flan recipe. The filling is based on a basic lemon curd. Use a pre-made sponge base, fill it with lemon curd, top the curd with cream and seasonal fruit to decorate. Dress your desert for success by serving it on an exquisite crystal cake stand. LEMON CURD – TO MAKE APPROXIMATELY 2 CUPS INGREDIENTS 6 egg yolks 1 cup sugar 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice 2 tbsps grated lemon zest 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter chopped into fine slivers
METHOD OF WORK Add 2.5cms of water to a medium stainless steel saucepan and bring to a simmer over a low heat. In a medium metal bowl whisk the egg yolks and sugar for about 2 minutes until creamy and smooth. Whisk in the lemon juice and zest until combined. Place the mixing bowl on top of a large saucepan (the bowl should be wide enough to fit on top of the saucepan, but shouldn’t be touching the simmering water). Stir the mixture constantly for about 10 minutes with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, scraping the bottom and sides of the bowl as you stir. As it thickens, the mixture should coat the back of a spoon. Remove the bowl from the saucepan. Whisk in the butter, one sliver at a time. Wait until each piece has dissolved before adding the next. When all the butter has been added, pour the mixture into a clean glass bowl and cover with cling film to 77

JAPANESE STEAM BOAT RECIPE
Steam boat cooking is a healthy and easy way of entertaining. The food is cooked in a stock at the dinner table. Guests are invited to cook their own tofu, meat, chicken or seafood once the vegetables are tender. Vegetarians may replace the meat with tofu or additional vegetables. Steamed rice may be added as a side dish. INGREDIENTS • ½ kilo strip loin or rib eye, sliced paper thin • 1 block firm tofu, cut into bite sized pieces • ½ head of napa cabbage, chopped • 1 large 1 bunch scallions, sliced on an angle into 5cm pieces • 1 package of enoki mushrooms, trimmed and pulled apart • 8 shiitake mushrooms with the stems removed • 3 cups chicken or vegetable • 3 cups water METHOD OF WORK On an attractive plate arrange the beef, tofu, cabbage, green onions and mushrooms. Set a portable gas burner on the dining table. Place a medium saucepan or shallow pot on the burner or use a Shabu Shabu kit which comes with gel fuel packs, as pictured opposite. Pour in both the chicken stock and water then bring it to a simmer. Do not bring to a full boil. Add the tofu and vegetables, starting with the ones that take the longest to cook. Once the tofu and vegetables are almost ready to eat, each person can start poaching their meat in little wire baskets. Cook the meat until it is rare or medium rare. It will only take about 15 to 30 seconds. Take out the tofu, vegetables and meat as they cook. Place the food into small bowls and add the dipping sauce for additional flavour. At the end of the meal the remaining soup may be scooped into the bowels and consumed. DIPPING SAUCE INGREDIENTS • 1/3 cup soy sauce • 1/4 cup lemon juice • 1 Tbsp rice vinegar • 1/3 cup dashi METHOD OF WORK Whisk the soy sauce, lemon juice, vinegar, and dashi together in a bowl.

RED BELL PEPPER RELISH INGREDIENTS • 2 large red bell peppers, chopped into small pieces • 1 onion, chopped into small pieces • 1 ¼ cups of sugar • 1 cup of white vinegar • 1 tsp of red pepper flakes METHOD OF WORK STEP 1 Add everything to a small sauce pan and stir all the ingredients until well incorporated. STEP 2 Cook the relish on medium heat for 5 minutes and then turn down the heat to medium-low for an additional 20 minutes. STEP 3 Stir occasionally until most of the liquid has reduced. Remove from heat and allow the relish to cool slightly before transferring it to clean sterilized jars. SALAD Cook pasta tubes in boiling water until just soft. Drain under cold water in a colander. Place the pasta into a bowl and mix in a tablespoon of olive oil, one teaspoon of crushed garlic and a tablespoon of white balsamic vinegar. Place a generous selection of salad leaves onto a plate. Spoon the pasta onto the salad, crumble feta cheese over the pasta and top with a tablespoon of relish.
