CHAPEL ARRANGEMENTS
• Chapel is an essential part of our school week. It is one opportunity to find moments of peace in a busy life. The weekly topics will revolve around both faith and values where the faith aspect is an exposure to the religious tradition of the Christian faith. Singing is an important and uplifting part of our Chapel experience. All are encouraged to take part.
• Chapel is compulsory for all and absence can only be granted by the Hm in agreement with the Chaplain. Personal faith is not expected; respect is.
• Pupils will be in their place, sitting silently and respectfully, ready for the service to commence at the advertised start time. The Chapel is open in advance of the Chapel services and pupils and staff are welcome to arrive early to sit quietly.
• Pupils are expected to self-regulate their behaviour and this is both the expectation and the norm. House prefects are present to monitor and encourage this attitude of reverence.
BOARDING AND WEEKEND PROGRAMME 2023
• Friday evenings – a social programme of events are available to all pupils. Pupils can sign up for these events electronically via a Google Form with instructions. Please note that day buses depart at 4.30 pm on Friday and therefore any day pupil wishing to join in with Friday evening sessions will have to make their own way home.
• Saturday mornings are open to all pupils. Day pupils should arrive at school prior to the start of the activity, register at the Porters Lodge and then should go directly to their weekend session where they will be registered. Lunch is available for all pupils in school on Saturdays. Day pupils should have departed by 1.30 pm and should sign out at the Porters Lodge. Please note all pupils selected for a sports team are expected to play in all fixtures as these take priority.

The Medical Centre
If you are feeling unwell you must approach your House Matron (Boarders) or go directly to the Medical Centre. The Opening Times for the centre are 8.30 am until 5.00 pm Monday to Friday, early closure on Wednesday for staff meetings and CPD at 4.00 pm.

Any issues with technology should be reported to the Helpdesk which is situated in the Aviary, outside the Science Block. The Helpdesk is open Monday – Friday 8.00 am – 4.30 pm. Pupils and staff can email queries to helpdesk@bedes.org
LOST PROPERTY
The school cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to the personal property of pupils. To minimise the possibility of property being lost:
• All pupils and their parents are required to make sure that all items of clothing and equipment are labelled, where possible, so that lost property is returned to its owner as soon as possible.
• Pupils are required to make sure that all their personal property and any school property issued to them is kept safely on their person.
• Parents are responsible for insuring their child’s personal items.
• Any items found at the School site or on school buses should be taken to the Porters’ Lodge, and if named will be returned to the pupils’ house as soon as possible.
• All unnamed/unclaimed lost property is disposed of at the end of each term.
THE VILLAGE SHOP
• As well as being part of the Bede’s Community we are all part of a wider Village Community and everyone should show care and thought to those within it.
• We expect everyone at Bede’s to behave in a compassionate and caring manner to all those that they come in contact with in the wider world.
• This is particularly important within the Village due to the high profile of the School within the locality.

• We recognise that this is incredibly important as Bede’s is at the centre of the Village, but also because we firmly believe that building a kind-hearted community fosters belonging and we want this for the whole Village as well as the School.
• Therefore everyone visiting the Village Shop must be aware of the impact that their actions can have on the Village and that they are ambassadors for the School.
• There are a number of properties that face directly into the waiting area outside the shop. This means that anyone visiting the Village Shop is very visible to local residents, who will in turn form an opinion of the reputation of Bede’s, based on the behaviour of those visiting whilst at the shop and when heading to and from the shop.
• Everyone should therefore do everything they can to be conscientious, kind and thoughtful in any of their interactions with residents and members of the public when visiting the Village Shop.
• Making excessive noise or using bad language when going to or from the shop or when waiting outside the shop is not in keeping with the aforementioned values.
• Walking thoughtfully along the pavements and being compassionate by bearing others in mind when doing so helps us build the right relationships with the Village.
Timings that must be followed by Pupils when visiting the Village Shop
• The Village Shop is out of bounds for all pupils, aside from those in the Sixth Form until the end of afternoon activities at 4.40 pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and 4.30pm on Monday and Friday.
• Sixth Formers visiting should always make sure that they allow enough time to come back and should leave the shop fifteen minutes before the start of their next lesson or registration.
• Sixth Formers must ensure that they attend lunchtime registration with their house and should not use being at the shop as a reason to miss this.
• Exceptions to these rules are only allowed when permission is specifically given by a member of staff for a particular reason e.g. A tutor group visiting the shop.
• Pupils should not use visiting the Village Shop as a reason to miss other school commitments when they are required to be in another place.

This is to ensure that the shop does not become too crowded and so pupils are not in any way seen as being a domineering presence by others who may be using the shop.

Rules to follow when travelling to the Village Shop
• Pupils must form an orderly queue behind the plant pots so that they are not blocking the entrance and should be caring and thoughtful towards those who are entering and exiting the shop.
• Pupils must respect the fact that tables are limited at the shop. The tables, both inside and outside the Village Shop are for dine-in customers only, meaning that those pupils who are waiting must not sit down at them as this would be selfish and not in line with being thoughtful to others. This also applies to any prefects who may be present and their friends. If pupils wish to dine in they just need to ask for a menu and they will be served.
• Pupils should respect the public and all other diners whilst in the shop.
• Pupils must not drop litter, on the road, pavement or area around the Village Shop.
• Pupils must not play ball games on the road, pavement or area around the Village Shop.
• Pupils should remember that the Village Shop does not belong to the school and is open to the public. Please be courteous at all times to members of the public and the staff in the shop.

• Please note the fields and path behind the Village Shop are out of bounds as well as any of the areas beyond the School fences which are private land owned by others.

• Please also note that the area around the Greenhouses is also out of bounds.
MOBILE PHONES, AIRPODS AND HEADPHONES
• From the start of the school day until the end of the school day, mobile phones, headphones and AirPods must not be used by pupils and should not be seen. The only exceptions to this are the very specific examples when a phone is required. For example, making a payment, using two-factor authentication or, in certain classes,

under teacher supervision, for filming or photographing or for listening to videos on devices in lessons.
• If pupils are seen with a phone, headphones and AirPods they will be confiscated and it is the responsibility of the pupil to collect them at the end of the day.
• These rules do not apply after the end of the school working day. Note that there are different rules inside Boarding Houses and also for Sixth Formers.
• Phones, headphones and AirPods should not be seen at any time in the Dining Hall, including all Boarders’ meal times outside of the school working day and at weekends.
• From the start of the school day until the end of the school day, pupils should not wear Headphones or AirPods around the campus during the hours of the school working day.
VISITORS TO BEDE’S CAMPUS
Bede’s welcomes parents and other people visiting the School, recognising the importance of interaction with non-School members. At the same time, however, we must ensure the safety and welfare of our pupils and avoid disruption to the educational process. Therefore, we ask parents, whenever possible, to make their visit known to the relevant member of staff (usually your child’s tutor or Housemaster/Housemistress) in advance. Pupils may not receive other visitors at School without the prior agreement of their Housemaster/Housemistress on each occasion. SENIOR SCHOOL UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS
All pupils are expected to wear the uniform in the correct manner which embodies the values of the school.

• Jumpers must be the blue v-neck jumper with green trim (purchased from School Blazer). The jumper must be worn in addition to the blazer and not instead of the blazer. House hoodies and other jumpers or sweatshirts must not be worn.
• White or black ankle length socks must be worn with a house kilt or neutral, plain blue or black tights or no socks must be worn with a house kilt. White socks should not be worn with school trousers. Knee length socks must not be worn.
• Shoes must be all black, must be leather or leather look and must be a traditional shoe that can be polished. Canvas shoes, trainers and any boots must not be worn. Sliders must not be worn.
• Pupils must not have nose piercings, eyebrow piercings, tongue piercings, lip piercings or septum piercings.
• Headphones must not be worn or on show around the school site.

• Coats should cover the suit jacket and should only be navy or black. They can be made of waterproof or wool material. New Balance Sport Jackets can be worn as a school coat.

AT BEDE’S WE EXPECT
1. Our pupils to learn the rules and play within them; to show good sportsmanship at all times, never playing unfairly or arguing with officials.
2. Our spectators to set a good example by recognising fair play and applauding good performance by all players. Spectators should not comment in a negative manner towards any player, coach or official. Bad language will not be tolerated either on or off the field.
3. Pupils and spectators to accept the official’s judgements and decisions.
4. Parents are asked to be supportive of the selection decisions made by coaches, accepting that decisions are made on a broad range of selection criteria.

5. Our coaches to communicate with teams through the Bede’s Sport page and app. Team lists will appear 48 hours beforehand. It is the responsibility of the pupil to check the team list.
Bede’s has its own dedicated sports web page - http://sports.bedes.org Accessing this through a mobile device will automatically direct you to the Bede’s Sport App. The web page and app contains up to date information about fixtures, team lists and travel.
• All pupils selected for a school team are expected to play all fixtures. Parents must seek permission from the Director of Sport, Mr Byrne for a pupil to miss a fixture but this must be sought at least a week before via a parent/guardian email. Any pupil who misses a fixture without permission will receive a sanction.
• There will be occasions when fixtures have to be changed or cancelled. Please check the school sports page on the parent portal or ring the Sports Hall on 01323 356569 if you are uncertain.
• Sports Matches, Practices, Drama, Music and Dance rehearsals take priority on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon over other events. Pupils involved in these activities must attend them.
• All times for Sports Matches are ‘kick off’ times; parents are welcome to attend any match.
• Cup fixtures cannot be planned in advance and therefore will appear in the online calendar and on the sports website.
DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURE FOR SPORT
• Stage 1 – Imposition and Sports Hall Detention (for repeated poor etiquette, poor kit or lateness)
• Stage 2 – Removed for up to a two-week period from the activity or/and Deputy Head Detention (for any repeats of stage 1, missing a fixture without adequate information or notice or dismissal from play during a fixture i.e. a Red Card)
• Stage 3 – Removed from programme (any repeat offences after stage 2)
Parents will be informed at each stage and decisions are made by the Director of Sport and SMT regarding all disciplinary issues.

ACTIVITY INFORMATION AND KIT
Expectations of pupil behaviour and dress are of the highest standard. Pupils must wear Bede’s Sports kit for all sporting activities at any time of the day. All pupils are expected to wear PE kit for their lessons and Activities kit for non-PE activities. Lessons and activities start promptly and lateness will not be tolerated for either lessons or Activities. If for any reason a pupil is unable to participate then a note must be provided for the relevant member of staff. House T-shirts can only be worn for House Competitions.
• Afternoon activities are compulsory and are part of the school day. Failure to attend an activity will result in a sanction.
• Pupils should not change their assigned activity without written permission from Mr Richards.
• Pupils must go to the assigned location for an activity at the correct time.
• Pupils who forget their kit for a sporting activity should stay with the activity and help run it with the member of staff.
• Pupils who are injured, missed the bus or whose teacher is absent should go to ICT3 for ‘Missed Activities’.
• Private Study is supervised – all pupils must register for Private Study.
• The Village Shop is out of bounds during activity time unless there is an activity scheduled to take place there.

• Please note the kit provider is New Balance – the Canterbury kit is now phased out
• Tracksuit Trousers: Black Bede’s New Balance only. No other tracksuit trousers are permitted.
• Shirts: Black New Balance shirt with Bede’s logo only.
•Skorts, shorts: Black Bede’s Skort or shorts only.
• Leggings: Bede’s New Balance leggings.
• Sports Tour Kit: Kit purchased for Sports tours is permitted if it is in line (the same kit with slightly different branding) with standard Bede’s kit only.
• Cold Weather Top: Bede’s New balance Jumper or New Balance lack one quarter zip games top

• Specialist Sports Kit: Different sports will require you to purchase the Bede’s games kit e.g. netball dresses, cricket whites.
• Shoes: Suitable shoes for the type of sport and venue you are playing at is required.

Uniform expectations for pupils in Performing Arts, Legat and Sports where changing is required:
• All pupils must arrive in full school uniform in the morning and change as per the below.
• All pupils must wear the correct Legat Uniform or be smartly dressed in their full Bede’s tracksuits. Full Bede’s kit means no shorts, skorts or sliders worn around the site. All pupils must present a pass to show their permissions and failure to produce this could lead to the privilege being removed.
• If a pupil has a lesson period 1 or 2 then they must politely ask to leave their tutor period promptly by 08.35 and change before their lesson. They may remain in their Legat Uniform during period 2 only.
• Pupils who have a lesson either period 1 or 2 change back into school uniform at morning break.
• If a pupil has a lesson during either period 3 or 4 then they change for this lesson at morning break. If the lesson is period 3 they may remain in Legat uniform or Bede’s tracksuits during period 4.
• Pupils who have lessons during periods 3 and 4 change back into school uniform at lunchtime.

• If a pupil has a lesson in the afternoon then they change at lunchtime and they may remain in Legat Uniform or Bede’s tracksuits for the afternoon.
• Any exceptional circumstances necessitating an exemption from the above are entirely at the permission and discretion of the Assistant Head Day or Deputy Heads.

BEDE’S DIPLOMA
All pupils in the L6 will be completing the Bede’s Diploma over the next two years. The Diploma is made up of four distinct sections. Pupils must complete each section in order to be awarded the Diploma at the end of the U6.
EXTEND
This is an opportunity for pupils to extend their skills and knowledge in a particular area, gaining University and/or Employment recognised qualifications, some of which also carry additional UCAS points.
Pupils will complete one of the following qualifications alongside their other A levels/BTECs:
• Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
• Level 2 Sports Leadership
• Arts Award Gold
• Business/Enterprise course
• IELTS
• Other recognised certificates (e.g. First Aid, Lifeguard, MOOC)

Pupils will develop their sense of personal and social responsibility through their involvement in the school and wider communities.
They are expected to actively engage in the following three areas, such as helping at events, charity fundraising, representing the school, as well as carrying out 20 hours of volunteering/community service:

• Wider community (20 hours of community service)
ENLIGHTEN
Pupils will develop a greater awareness of themselves and the world they live in, career pathways, life skills, healthy living, as well as enlightening themselves further in areas of interest.
They will be expected to attend and participate in the following (five compulsory and five optional):

• Workshops
ENHANCE
In this section pupils develop the skills, behaviours and attributes that are essential for the workplace and adulthood.

All pupils will undertake a viva-style interview in Upper 6th, which forms part of the final Diploma assessment.

BEDE’S PUPIL COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE (TRUST)
STAGE 1
If a pupil has a worry or complaint, in most cases they will be able to communicate that informally to an adult who knows them. Any pupil having a grievance can approach any of the members of staff within their House or indeed the School (their Housemaster/ mistress, tutor, form teacher or matron would normally be the person best placed to deal with the matter in the first instance).
If a pupil feels that their problem has not been properly addressed or sorted out the following procedure is laid down whereby they can make a more formal complaint. A pupil will not be penalised for making a formal complaint in good faith.
STAGE 2
If any pupil feels the need to make a formal complaint about a matter which is causing distress or a problem which cannot be otherwise resolved he or she should inform (at the Senior School) a Deputy Head, Assistant Head or the Chaplain, or (at the Prep School) the Deputy Head, Head of Year or the Welfare Officer either verbally or in writing. The complaint will be acknowledged within two days and a written record will be made of the complaint.
STAGE 3
The complaint will be investigated by a mutually agreed, independent person, sanctioned by the Headmaster, and resolved either to the pupil’s satisfaction or with an otherwise appropriate outcome, which balances the rights and duties of those involved. The investigation will normally be completed within two weeks. The complainant will be informed of the outcome in writing.
STAGE 4
If the pupil, or his/her parents or carers, feel that the procedure detailed above has not dealt with the complaint satisfactorily then a letter setting out the unresolved complaint should be sent to the Headmaster. The School will then follow the Bede’s Complaints Policy, which is available on the website.

Accidents/Injuries to Pupils
• Injury to a pupil (in activities or otherwise) should be reported immediately to a Member of Staff.
• Serious injuries will always be taken directly to Eastbourne District General Hospital and not the Medical Centre.
• All injuries at school or during a school activity should be reported to the School Nurse. If a Member of Staff is not accessible, and the injury is serious (an obvious or suspected break or dislocation, a suspected internal injury, eye injury, unconsciousness for any length of time, road traffic injury), the senior pupil present should:-
1. Send another pupil to telephone for an ambulance (see above)
2. Not move the casualty, but keep him/her warm
3. After the casualty has been taken to hospital, inform the Housemaster/Housemistress
If fire breaks out in a building
1. Raise the alarm
2. Close doors and windows
3. Leave the building immediately
4. Ensure that the fire brigade has been called (“Accidents and Emergencies” see above)
