2013 Annual Review

Page 1

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Bedford College exists to make our local community stronger and richer, both economically and socially, through its expertise in education and training. And 2013 was a very successful year for the College in that regard – success that was all the more pleasing against a backdrop of cuts in public spending. The College showed record levels of recruitment of young people, record numbers of apprentices, record pass rates, record levels of income and a fantastic number of employers choosing the College to deliver their training. We were also responsible for the introduction of two major new educational initiatives in Bedford – project managing the Bedford Free School to a successful start, and opening The Bedford Sixth Form in the former private Bedford High School buildings. Successes like these can only come about through a strong commitment to partnership working, and by maintaining the highest quality standards in all we do. It is therefore also pleasing to gain confirmation of our quality from external organisations, with reaccreditation for the quality and impartiality of our advice and guidance services, a number of marketing awards, and Ofsted judging us as ‘Outstanding’ for student outcomes and safeguarding of residential students. I hope you find our Annual Review interesting and helpful.

Read on to find out about some of the partnerships we’ve formed, and the work we do to help make a positive impact on the community.

CHARITY AND FUNDRAISING

SUPPORTING THE LOCAL ECONOMY

Last year the College raised £1,884 for local and national charities thanks to the hard work and commitment of our fantastic students and staff, who took part in a range of impressive fundraising efforts…

The 'Love Bedford' gift voucher scheme is designed to encourage residents and visitors to the town to support local shops and restaurants, and as a founding member alongside the Bedford Business Improvement District (BID), the College has contributed over £300,000 to this great cause so far.

HOSPITALITY DOES LADIES’ DAY The Hospitality department helped to celebrate Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot by preparing a lavish three course meal in aid of the Sue Ryder Foundation – over £1,000 was raised for the charity.

HAIR-RAISING MONEY

PARENTS AND FAMILY Our students are amazing, but we recognise that behind each one is a crucial support network of parents and families. That’s why we place real importance on involving them as much as possible in what our students aged 14-18 do. This year we’ve continued our policy of maintaining regular contact and support with the parents of our students through providing…

Students Katie Lambe and Karla Sheppard at the College’s BROOKS Hair & Beauty Salon were busy fundraising by shaving their hair off. They managed to raise over £400 for Great Ormond Street.

• information about our College and courses to parents/guardians of both prospective and current students • information about students’ academic progress, attendance and disciplinary matters • information on the welfare of our residential students.

COMIC RELIEF CAKE SALE

ADULT LEARNING

Staff and students from the Basic Skills and English for Speakers of Other Languages departments raised a fantastic £105 for Comic Relief through some delicious homemade cakes.

Our community Learning Centres in Bedford, Luton, Milton Keynes and Rushden provide people of all cultural backgrounds, abilities and ages the chance to improve their skills and enhance their career opportunities. In the last year alone our Centres have helped 1,565 members of the local community to gain IT, English and Maths qualifications and open up possibilities in life and work.

LINKS WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS Through the Bridges 14-16 Academy at our Cauldwell Street Campus, we provide practical, career-focused training in a wide range of areas to school students in Years 10 and 11 – in 2012/13 we welcomed 473 young students through our doors to experience study programmes as diverse as Agriculture and Construction.
