We are now proud to provide a wider range of undergraduate courses, giving you more choices, opportunities and experiences across Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. We have strong partnerships with the University of Bedfordshire and the University of Northampton, allowing you to complete full honours degrees in many of our subjects. We offer courses based at Bedford College, Shuttleworth College near Biggleswade and Tresham College campuses in Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough. Nick’s Story

MAINTENANCE ENGINEERING LEVEL 4 APPRENTICESHIP AND HNC ENGINEERING After my A-Levels I didn’t feel it was the right time for me to go straight to university; I didn’t really know at that time what I wanted to do and I wouldn’t have been going for the right reasons.

“Once I had decided that I would rather start working, doing an Apprenticeship was the best option because I could start earning a wage and study at the same time.” I joined Prosaw Ltd and worked through the Level 3 Apprenticeship programme. When I finished the Level 3, I sat down with my manager and training co-ordinator to look at my options and decided to continue on to the Level 4 higher apprenticeship, which also involved enrolling on to the day release HNC Engineering course. The demands of studying have been a challenge and I have had to work hard to keep on top of the workload, but it has been worth it. My job at Prosaw Ltd is to oversee the department which deals with refurbishing used machinery for the purpose of selling on. My employers have been very supportive and I would definitely recommend doing an apprenticeship to others, as long as you are prepared to put the hours in.

Studying at our Bedford College Campuses in Bedford & Kempston Right in the heart of Bedford Bedford has some amazing spaces and places such as the new Riverside Complex, set in a stunning location on the banks of the River Great Ouse. The development features restaurants, a cinema, hotel and new public open spaces along the river. Bedford also offers the bustling sights and sounds of nightly entertainment at the Corn Exchange to the tranquility of the galleries and museums of the historic Castle Quarter.

Library Our modern Library is the place to study outside of classes, with spaces for both individual and group study and over 30,000 resources including books, journals and DVDs to support your learning. You can also access computers including PCs, Macs and netbooks, or make use of our free WiFi. Plus, when you’re not on-site you can access online resources and library services from wherever you are 24/7 through Moodle – our online student portal.

Industry-class workshops Choosing one of our engineering or construction courses means you’ll get the chance to hone technical skills in real-life working environments, getting your hands on modern engineering machinery and some of the most advanced renewable technologies equipment in the UK. Engineering students will also get to study in our brand new £5.2 million Buchanan Centre building, containing state-of-the-art robotic equipment.

Studying at Shuttleworth College Campus in Old Warden, Biggleswade Set in over 500 acres of beautiful parkland Based in Old Warden, near Biggleswade, Shuttleworth College provides the environment you need to succeed on our Animal Science and Agriculture courses.

The low down on the local area... Beyond the stunning parkland, lakes and woodland of the College grounds you’ll find an unspoilt landscape of farmland, ancient villages and delightful scenery stretching as far as the eye can see. The larger town of Biggleswade and newly-built large retail park with shops and supermarkets, plus a rail link to London is just 10 minutes away by car.

Shuttleworth College is proud to be a national leader in animal sciences and land-based education. This new state-of-the-art ‘Eden style’ centre, includes a tropical rainforest setting and immersive biome. Shuttleworth College is the first college in the country to boast such a unique facility, housing a wide range of animal species, flora and fauna; providing you with exciting learning and career progression opportunities.

Munch & Mocha Our popular restaurant is open to serve you healthy, tasty food at great prices. Hot and cold food is available every day along with a variety of drinks and snacks – so, if you’ve worked up an appetite, come and grab a bite to eat with your classmates.

Access to animals As an Animal Sciences student you’ll benefit from access to a variety of animals and exotic species at our dedicated animal centre and our British Horse Society (BHS) accredited equine centre at nearby Mount Pleasant, as well as a variety of livestock at Kingshill Farm – the College’s working farm and estate.

Accommodation If travelling to Shuttleworth College is difficult for you, we may be able to offer you a place in our halls of residence based on site, graded as Outstanding by OFSTED in 2018. You’ll get your own single study bedroom plus a modern common room complete with kitchen. In 2018/19 our accommodation cost was £3,960 per year including full board during the week (subject to change, check online for the latest information). Loans and financial support for Access to Higher Education and Art & Design Foundation BTEC Diploma (Pre-Degree) courses Level 3 • If you are aged 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification, your course will be free for you to study. • If you are aged 19-23 and already hold a Level 3 qualification such as A-Levels or a BTEC Diploma, or are aged over 24 you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your tuition fees (see details below). • If you are receiving a loan for an Access course and go on to complete an undergraduate qualification, any remaining balance from your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off when you graduate. Stage One: Submit your application online The application process to apply for our courses is different depending upon which type of course you are applying for and whether you want to study full-time or part-time. Don’t worry - you can find full information against the course details on our website or in this guide. Full-time courses – HNC, HND and Foundation Degrees You will need to submit an application for our full-time courses through the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Detailed information about how and when to apply can be found at www.ucas.com. We can take applications received through the UCAS scheme up to 15 January 2020 if there are still vacancies on your course but we do advise you to apply earlier. For some courses you will need to apply directly to the University of Bedfordshire or the University of Northampton using their UCAS institution codes. You can find this information on the individual course pages. Full-time courses – BA and BSc (Hons) degrees including top ups from HND These courses require you to apply directly to either the University of Bedfordshire or the University of Northampton. Stage Three: Receiving an offer

At this stage you will also receive a precontract information sheet which will include additional information about the course you will study such as contact hours for teaching, course costs, assessment methods and the units you will study on the course.

For the majority of our courses you will be offered a place based on meeting the entry qualifications for your course. However, for some courses you’ll need to attend an interview with one of our tutors to ensure that the course you’ve chosen is right for you. If you are a mature applicant without the necessary entry requirements for your course but you have relevant work experience we will ask you to come into College to discuss your application, answer any questions that you may have and check which level you should be starting at. All students applying for an Art & Design, Performing Arts or Teacher Education course will also be required to attend a guidance interview and/or assessment. You may be asked to bring a portfolio of your work (Art & Design) or give an audition (Performing Arts & Music) as part of the interview. Full details of the format of your interview will be included as part of the invitation.

You should receive a formal offer of a place on a course within one week of receiving your application or within one week of the interview (if applicable). Offers will be made either through UCAS (full-time courses) or through the College’s online application portal. Offers may be conditional on you meeting certain conditions, usually qualifications that you may need to pass or specific grades.

Stage 4: Attend an Offer Holder Event If you have been offered a place on a course you will be invited to attend an Offer Holder Event in June where you can experience what it is like to study at the College, meet staff, see our facilities and find out about bursaries and support available.

Stage 5: Enrolling onto your course If you are applying for a full-time course you will be asked to come into the College to complete your enrolment in September. Part-time applicants can enrol onto their course at any time from May onwards, either over the telephone or in person. At enrolment you will be asked to pay for your course if you are paying for the course yourself, or provide evidence of your student loan or commitment from your employer.

Stage 6: Starting your course You will receive details of your course timetable at enrolment however term typically starts in the middle of September.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)

As part of our initial advice and guidance, interview and enrolment procedures, we will take into account the experience and knowledge you have gained from outside the formal education and training system. Consequently, we are open to accepting a wide range of evidence sources for RPL provided that the following applies. Any evidence provided should be: • Sufficient – to demonstrate competence • Current – how recent the experience is can be a factor in its relevance • Authentic – some evidence may require endorsement from third parties • Relevant – the requirements of a particular qualification will act as a determining factor in identifying a suitable evidence base. Qualifications guide Art & Design BTEC Foundation Diploma (Pre-Degree)

BTEC Higher National Certificates/ Diplomas (HNCs/HNDs)

WHAT IS IT? This course is designed to prepare students wishing to enter undergraduate programmes within the field of Art & Design. It’s a widely recognised pathway that aims to give you further knowledge of a range of disciplines so that you can then choose where to specialise. The course is often required by many colleges and universities for entry on to Art & Designrelated undergraduate courses.

WHAT ARE THEY? These undergraduate qualifications focus on industry skills and are valued by employers as an alternative to university. HNCs and HNDs are mainly assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course – not usually through exams. They’re designed to lead straight to a career in industry or on to further study at degree-level.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? The Art & Design Foundation Diploma takes one year to complete. Find out more about this course on page 38.

HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE? HNCs take between one and two years to complete depending on the study route you choose, and are generally equivalent to the first year of a full honours degree at university. You can continue your studies at The Bedford College Group by moving on to the HND qualification after your HNC. HNDs represent the next level of study up from HNCs, taking an additional one to two years to complete, depending on the study route you choose. They are generally equivalent to the second year of university and you can ‘top-up’ your HND with a further one or two years of study to convert it to a full honours degree. Alternatively, a HND is a standalone, recognised qualification that prepares you to progress directly into employment.

Access to Higher Education courses WHAT ARE THEY? These courses are designed to provide a route to degree-level study if you don’t have the right qualifications or experience to start a degree. Access courses aim to introduce you to a subject area, develop your study skills and build your confidence and ability with undergraduate study. Access courses are recognised by universities across the UK and allow entry on to undergraduate programmes at The Bedford College Group and beyond. HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE? Our Access to Higher Education courses typically take one year to complete. However, our part-time Access courses take two years to complete. Find out more on pages 26 and 27.

Foundation Degrees (FdA/FdSc) WHAT ARE THEY? Foundation Degrees are undergraduate qualifications that have been developed with employers to advance your skills in a specific industry sector. They are assessed through project work, reports, exams, practical work and presentations. HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE? A Foundation Degree takes two to four years to complete depending on the study route you choose. It is equivalent to the first two years of a full honours degree and, just like HNDs, you will have the option to ‘top-up’ your Foundation Degree and convert it into a full honours degree through an additional year of study.

BA and BSc ‘top-ups’ (Top-up from HND or Foundation Degree) WHAT ARE THEY? Run in partnership with the University of Bedfordshire or the University of Northampton, these courses enable those who have graduated with a HND or Foundation Degree in some subject areas to ‘top-up’ and achieve a degree qualification without the need to take a full three or four year degree programme. HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE? BA and BSc ‘top-ups’ take one or two years to complete depending on whether you study on a full-time or part-time basis respectively.

We offer Certificate of Education (Cert Ed) and Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualifications that are designed to build your teaching skills if you’re looking to begin or develop your career within post-compulsory education. We also offer University Certificates in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) across a range of teaching skill areas, which may be taken as building blocks towards a full Bachelor’s degree qualification. Access to Higher Education Want to study at degree level but don’t have the qualifications you need?

Access to Higher Education courses are a great way to gain the qualifications that you need to study at undergraduate level. Our flexible study options mean that you can balance your study with your work and family commitments.

COURSE OVERVIEW

FUTURE OPTIONS

These courses provide a recognised route into undergraduate or higher level courses if you don’t have the necessary qualifications or experience to start a course. Access courses aim to build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to undergraduate programmes in the subject area you’re interested in.

On successful completion you can progress on to a degree-level course or further qualifications in your chosen specialist area.

We offer Access courses at Bedford College, Shuttleworth College and Tresham College’s Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough campuses. Visit our websites for more information on where you can study your chosen pathway. At Bedford College and Tresham College we also offer the Level 2 Preparation for Access course. This one year course is designed for those who do not yet have the entry criteria for the Level 3 Access course. It is suited to adults who have been out of education for some time and who need to re-learn how to study at a higher level before progressing on to the intensive Access programme.

AREAS OF STUDY Depending on your chosen specialist subject, you will study subject specific units plus the following core units: essay writing and communication skills; mathematics; research skills and study skills. You will also undertake an independent research project and tutorial. These units are the core subjects of study for all pathways.

We have close links with local universities including the University of Bedfordshire and the University of Northampton. We liaise with them directly about the entry criteria for applicants and the interview process.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Access courses are aimed at mature students (19+) who do not have the standard qualifications to study at degree level. GCSE English and maths grade C/grade 4 is desirable at most universities; however, we may consider candidates without these qualifications. This may depend on an English and maths entry test, where you will need to demonstrate English and maths skills at Level 2, in addition to interviewing successfully. Most universities require GCSE English and maths. You will need to research the entry criteria to your chosen universities. You may also be able to study either GCSE English or maths as an extra qualification. The entry criteria may be different for some pathways. Check online for individual course requirements.

Loans to help pay for your Access course

If you are aged 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification, your course will be free for you to study. I’d been out of education for nine years before starting this course at Tresham College. I currently work in administration but I want to get into mental health nursing, so this is the first step towards getting the qualifications I need. Once I have the Access qualification I am planning to go to the University of Northampton to study Mental Health Nursing. I’ve really enjoyed the psychology side of the course because it is the most relevant aspect for me and my career plans, and I enjoy learning about the brain. My tutors have been very supportive. This is a route to an Agriculture Honours Degree. It is aimed at those who already possess a Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent in Agriculture or a related area. The course offers a scientific approach to the management of agricultural land and livestock with a strong focus on how we can help establish global food security. It fosters the use of scientific inquiry and research principles to solve problems faced in a vocational context. Practical use of farm and laboratory resources will be integral to the delivery of learning, with study trips to external agents providing enhanced learning opportunities.

We have established links with agricultural and research enterprises, national and international companies and specialists who provide a wide range of opportunities for you. Regular visits by industry experts, industry placements and trips are essential parts of this qualification.

AREAS OF STUDY During this course you will have the option to study a range of units such as: an agricultural science research project; environment and climate change; animal physiology; and disease and food security.

Catherine’s Story AGRICULTURE FdSc

After a career break from the Community Support sector to raise a family, I wanted to be part of something I felt passionate about. Baffled by why emerging technologies weren’t more readily applied in agriculture to guarantee future food security, I decided on a career in agri-tech. Having a family and no prior agriculture experience meant I needed a local course provider with accessible staff to guide me through. The course has reignited my interest in science, which is pivotal to innovation development. Although technologies allow for crops to be grown out of season using protected cropping, science is needed to improve the quality and taste of these products. With the threat of fresh produce increasing in price due to the unstable political climate, I see an opportunity to perfect these sustainable practices here in the UK. This is also relevant globally as unpredictable weather and soaring temperatures are compromising crop yields in even warmer climates. After the Foundation Degree I plan on completing a top-up year to improve my competency in scientific research skills. The future dream is to run a mixed farming enterprise incorporating aquaponics, alongside research into creating cultivars of tropical dwarf fruit trees that can be grown in the UK. The science exists, so why not! Getting back into education as a mature student can be quite tough especially with a family. Time management is crucial when trying to juggle expectations of family with assignment deadlines. “Sometimes it’s a struggle, but that’s okay because I know support at Shuttleworth is there to help me, not only achieve, but be a competitive candidate when I graduate. It’s definitely a big commitment but 100% worth it!”

FUTURE OPTIONS

This is a route to an Animal Science Honours Degree. It is aimed at those who already possess a Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent in Animal Management or a related area. The course offers a scientific approach to the management of animals. It fosters the use of scientific inquiry and business principles to solve problems faced in a vocational context. Practical use of animal and laboratory resources will be integral to the delivery of learning, with study trips to external agents providing enhanced learning opportunities.

The course can lead to careers in animal care, conservation and scientific research into animal health and nutrition. Shuttleworth College has excellent animal management facilities and animal collections, as well as contacts with local zoos and safari parks, which provide a great opportunity for practical research.

AREAS OF STUDY During this course you will have the option to study a range of units such as: managing animal collections; scientific theory of animals; interaction of animals and environment; animal physiology and disease; environment and climate change; research project.

STAFF EXPERTISE Staff have experience and knowledge in the management of animal collections and a range of biological and animal sciences, such as animal ecology and physiology. Project supervisors are experienced in leading students through the process of conducting independent research.

ASSESSMENT METHODS The course uses a range of assessment types, such as critical essays, laboratory reports, consultancy-style reports and closed-book exams. The research project will enable you to undertake a piece of independent research, supervised by a member of staff. This will allow you to engage deeply with your chosen topic area and will equip you with skills for investigating an animal-related research question, independently gathering and analysing data and communicating the findings effectively with a range of audiences. Past student projects have been undertaken in areas such as the importance of enrichment for captive animals, the effects of environmental microplastics on aquatic animals, factors affecting re-homing of domestic cats and the use of urban ecosystems by wild birds.

Kimberlee’s Story ANIMAL MANAGEMENT FdSc

I had previously studied at Shuttleworth College on the Level 3 Animal Management course. I’ve always loved animals and had my own pets. Shuttleworth had really good reviews, so it was an obvious choice after finishing school. At the end of the course I took a gap year and worked at Pets at Home, where I’m still employed parttime. While it’s good to be working in the industry, I always had a feeling I wanted to go back and study for further qualifications and gain more experience. I didn’t even consider university because I knew the tutors at Shuttleworth and how everything worked here. I knew studying the Foundation Degree would help me on my way to a career change and I’m also considering topping up to the full BSc degree at the end of the course. The course is mostly theory based and I am really enjoying the health and biological elements. I find this aspect of animal management really interesting and I am now looking into getting into breeding and conservation work once I graduate. There is a big difference between Level 3 and undergraduate study, particularly with the assignments in terms of word counts and referencing. We have, however, had lessons to run through everything that is expected of us working at this level. We also have regular meetings and one-to-ones with our tutors, which are very helpful.

This creative qualification is designed to introduce you to contemporary 3-dimensional (3D) design. The course focuses on interior design and product design. During the course you will have the opportunity to develop methodologies for idea generation and strategies for contemporary making. You will be exposed to new materials employed within the 3D design field like jesmonite. In addition you will engage in contextual understanding of European design and 3D design from various cultures.

We have strong links with industry and regularly invite in guest lecturers to deliver hands on workshops such as Katie Gillies, a professional in jesmonite homeware and furniture surfaces. Jade Hibbert delivers silversmithing and Arthur Mansell is a leading expert in mould making. We have visits to John Lewis headquarters for an insight into product photography. Students have also collaborated with renowned designer Max McMurdo.

The course is supported by workshops delivered by guest lecturers and cultural visits abroad to Europe and American cities. In addition, we visit/show at several design exhibitions and international design events, such as New Designers in London.

Suraj’s Story 3D DESIGN HNC

I’m a very creative person but was never made aware of HNCs at school. Everything was about university, so when I finished my A-Levels I went to uni to study Marketing & Advertising. The lecture groups were so big I had to sit on the stairs in my first lecture and we only got one-to-one time with our tutor around three times a year. I left after the first year and took a year out to explore my options. The subject tutors met with me to make sure the course would be suitable and then I started in the autumn. I met with a Careers Advisor and then applied for the HNC.

“So many people go to university just because they are not aware of the other options out there; I’ve had a few friends at uni say they wish they were doing this instead!” College is a lot more inclusive and you get more time with your tutors who are very positive and will never say no to helping you. The facilities are also easier to access when you need them and you can go to other departments for help, such as the Photography students who photograph my work for my portfolio. I’m mostly enjoying the practical work and the amount of teaching time that we get. We do lots of group critiques on each other’s work and have live briefs to work on. A recent one came from a London designer who wanted designs for an iPhone docking station. It had to be aesthetically pleasing for the home, but other than that we could choose suitable materials to work with. We’ve had industry specialists come in and talk to us and have visited local designer Max McMurdo’s studio, as well as Jesmonite who are a producer and retailer of an innovative material that has made a huge impression on recent design trends and industries. One of our units covered the different jobs available in the industry and I was like a kid in a candy shop! I want to try a few things out when I leave College and perhaps eventually get a job designing prototypes.

I started out at College on the Level 3 Animation course and found that I really enjoyed the Illustration side. At the higher levels of animation there is not so much illustration included, but I knew I needed to study an undergraduate course in order to achieve more UCAS points. The HNC in Art Practice gives me the points I need to apply for university, but also allows me to carry on developing my illustration skills. I’ve never really been a fan of writing and I’m not very good at it, so I’m really enjoying the creative side of the course. I’ve learnt new and exciting medias to work with, such as printing, which gives me a new platform to work with and create my art. It’s been a busy time developing a portfolio and applying to university alongside the course, but I have had the full support of my tutors to help balance everything and make the process of applying to university easier.

A decade of creative excellence During each of the past 10 years, students from The Bedford College Group have successfully competed against UK universities by repeatedly winning prestigious national and international design competitions run by YCN & D&AD. Students have also benefited from working and engaging with many of the UK’s leading creative agencies such as: World of Initials, M&C Saatchi VCCP, Engine, Publicis Sapient, Studio Koto, Wiedemann Lampe, Superunion, Purpose and Sony Entertainment, These experiences are further supported by numerous opportunities to work on ‘live’ fee-paying briefs. A recent brief from an Italian client has resulted in student Alexandra Barowski seeing her designs for a new wine being put into production, whilst student Carli Hall has named and created branding for a new £13m Brewery development.

Samantha’s Story GRAPHIC DESIGN HND

When I started College on the HNC last year, I knew I wanted to go into work as a Graphic Designer. However, during my time here I have found my niche and realised, with the guidance of my tutors, that an Art Direction role would suit me better. I’m good at coming up with ideas for briefs, and I have good communication and people skills. In the meantime, I’ll be looking for an entry level position as an Artworker after College.

“Last year I achieved Distinctions in all of my units - my goal is to finish the HND with Distinctions across the board.” College is what you want to make of it; I am constantly asking questions to get better and find out as much as I can. I’m putting the work in and it’s paying off. I recently won a project with Kettering Borough Council to propose ideas to produce design panels for the cultural quarter. The design had to celebrate Northamptonshire, so mine was based around shoes. I got to meet the Mayor and have an interview with BBC Radio Northampton, but above all it was great to get a real taste of a client brief. To see a design of mine go to print was very exciting. We are now working on our Final Major Project. I contacted a company called Mondo, who are based in Texas and design and print incredible movie posters for collectors. I already have a degree in Film, so this seemed a great way to combine my two passions. Mondo use designers to recreate movie posters as works of art, just as they used to be before movie memorabilia was lost in the 1990s. Mondo have made it popular again and they make Graphic Designers artists in their own right. I now have access to their Creative Director to comment on my work and give feedback throughout the project. It’s an avenue I’d love to pursue and it would be an incredible honour to design for them one day.

INDUSTRY LINKS

This course will enable you to take images that you are interested in and you will develop an understanding of how to apply your practice within a commercial context, for example fashion, advertising, product and editorial. Practical assignments will enable you to acquire conceptual and technical skills in contemporary image making.

You will have the opportunity to undertake freelance photography work, enter competitions, and visit contextual exhibitions. At Bedford College students exhibit their photography annually at local venues and the course has been recognised by the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP). Tresham College Photography students take part in annual exhibitions and are encouraged to present their work to wider audiences. Students will develop professional practice with an emphasis on visual awareness within contemporary contexts.

You will be issued with project briefs, which will develop your understanding of photography as a craft in the studio environment and on location. The technical practice is underpinned by your understanding of photography as a tool to communicate meaning and message to a variety of audiences.

Laura’s Story PHOTOGRAPHY HNC

I studied an Art & Design course at Level 2 five years ago at a different college. I love art, but was keen to learn more about photography, which this particular course unfortunately didn’t cover in any great depth. I have a 12-year-old daughter and have been waiting for the right time to study again. I bought my own camera three years ago and enrolled on to the part-time HNC Photography course last autumn.

“I chose The Bedford College Group because it is definitely the best around for Photography. The course is one day per week, but I always come back in for a second day so that I can benefit from tutor support.” It was scary getting back into education at first, but it’s definitely worth it and I have so much more confidence. I’ve learnt different techniques on the camera I didn’t know about before, and also how to use Photoshop. We’ve been on trips to the Tate Modern and to a photography show. We also went to London last week to do some street photography, which I love. My current project is based on narrative photography, where a photo tells a story but there is no wrong or right. I have produced three photos on the theme ‘what happens after happily ever after?’ One is happy, one is independent and strong and one is sad. At home I like to photograph friends with their babies and do pregnancy shoots too. The area I want to get into when I finish the HNC is wedding photography. I’ve already done one wedding for a friend and have another coming up, which I’m really looking forward to.

Fashion starts with textiles, and during this exciting course you will learn how to develop a wide range of textile applications to enhance your fashion collections. This course allows you to specialise in either Fashion or Textiles for Fashion. The broad range of facilities includes; digital and screen printing, transfer print and laser cutting. Holly’s Story

FASHION (FASHION FOR TEXTILES) BA (HONS) I have studied Fashion & Textiles at the College from Level 3 up to this degree. I always knew I’d stay here for an undergraduate course because I know my tutors will support me to become the designer I want to be. They help you to know what you want to do in industry and I am really enjoying finessing who I am as a designer, as well as pursuing my interest in print. We have great equipment for print work including digital and silk screen, as well as procion dyes and resources for hand printing techniques. For my final major project I am designing prints for six outfits based on the distortion of the human mind and how reality can be affected. We are encouraged by our tutors to choose interesting themes that raise awareness and have had to do extensive market research.

“Our course is two days per week but we can come in whenever we want; the classroom is accessible every day and there is always a tutor available who will help to find a solution to what you want to do.” One of my tutors is fantastic on the sketchbook and fashion side, and how designs come together, while the other is great with the technical elements of making garments and manipulating pattern pieces. We have plenty of one-to-one support and the course is very varied, whereas university courses tend to be more niche. Every level you move up here you explore things in more depth, for example on the HNC we started looking at branding and high street fashion in greater detail. I’d love to get an internship in London after College in surface print for either fashion or interiors. I’ve been inspired by a few designers including Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Mary Katrantzou for her work on print. One day I’d like to own a studio or be head of a design house while still being in touch with my creative side on a daily basis. I want to teach other people and continue to move my own knowledge on.

GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION BA (HONS) I’ve always been interested in design, but never studied it at school and ended up going to work for an insurance company for two years. At this point, I realised I needed to create a design portfolio if I wanted to start considering design as a career. Once I had my portfolio I applied for the Level 3 Graphic Design course here at the College and, after my first year, was fast-tracked on to the HNC and then the HND. I’m now studying for a full degree at College in partnership with the University of Northampton.

“We get so many great opportunities on this course. We’re currently working on a live brief from a client who we’ll soon be pitching our designs to.” The client is local brewer Wells & Co (formerly Charles Wells) who are building a new £14m brewery just outside Bedford and in need of new branding. We also work on a lot of competition briefs, which the department has great success with. I won a YCN award last year for a ‘Student Art Pass’ campaign I designed for ArtFund; a national charity for art that offers entry to museums and galleries. I won a week’s work experience with ArtFund’s design agency down in London who work with clients such as the NHS. I’ve also had work from the course, which is great. We had to design a flea market poster for a branding project and my design was chosen to be used. Due to a mutual contact, this has led to some design work for the Bedford Clanger magazine. Our tutors are very helpful and encourage you to try different routes for your designs, while also helping you to refine your ideas. They’ve all worked in industry and are very easy to get hold of whenever you need them. After the BA I hope to find work with an agency in London focusing on branding and advertising. Anne’s Story BUSINESS HNC/HND

I work full-time as a Customer Services Manager for Viapath; a public-private joint venture providing a range of pathology services for clinical customers, including Bedford Hospital where I am based. After discussing progression opportunities with my manager, they sponsored me to do the Business HNC/HND. The knowledge I am gaining through this qualification will likely open up new opportunities within our Corporate Services team in London where, ultimately, I see my career progressing. I have previously studied an NVQ in Customer Service at College and found it a very positive and rewarding experience. While there is no denying that the HND course is a step up and a real challenge alongside working full-time and looking after my family, the tutors are really helpful and are always there to address any issues or concerns. The course involves two evenings a week in College and my employer allows me time to complete assignments if I need it. I’ve particularly enjoyed the unit on HR Development and it’s really opened my eyes to the problems businesses face and the solutions they use to address them. As part of my course we have also visited the Magistrates Court in Milton Keynes.

Jamie’s Story

EARLY YEARS STUDIES FOUNDATION DEGREE (FdA) I started my journey at College about 10 years ago on the Level 2 Childcare course. I worked my way up to Level 3 and then got a job at Angels Day Nursery where I had completed my work placement. They noticed how good I was on placement and offered me a full-time job. After a few years I was promoted to Senior Nursery Nurse at Angels and given my own room to manage. It was then that I realised I needed to extend my knowledge further so, after a six year gap from education, I returned to College. It was quite hard to get back into an education environment; having to write in academic tone, while also developing my research skills. However, with determination I kept going and am so proud of the progress I have made. I would advise all mature students not to give up, even if it seems daunting. Once I have finished my final assignment I will be applying to top-up to a full degree at the University of Bedfordshire.

“The tutors have all been very supportive and ensured that I, as a learner with dyslexia, fully understood tasks and assignments that were being set.” My tutor was fantastic at ensuring all my handouts were the correct colour and font size to support my learning needs. The topics we’ve covered have all been interesting in their own way and I have enjoyed some more than others. The topic that transformed my personal practice within the nursery was Inclusion for Young Children. This led to me becoming the Safeguarding lead for the nursery and has also inspired me to consider a career in either Social Work or as a Family Support Worker, because I feel I can make even more of a difference being there to support the families and children. The student that started this Foundation Degree is not the one finishing it. I have strengthened my understanding and knowledge of early years, met some fantastic people who have supported me every step of the way, and I like to think that I have supported them.

Simran’s Story COMPUTING (ALUMNI)

I studied the Level 3 Computing course at Bedford College prior to degree-level study. I decided to stay and complete my HNC and HND here because of the support and guidance I had received from my tutors. They reassured me that I would have the one-to-one support to make sure I gained my qualifications. I then progressed to the University of Bedfordshire to complete a top-up year and finished with a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Information Systems. I am now working for a large IT consultancy. I’m currently using databases and agile framework, and python, on a daily basis, all of which were taught on the course at College. It’s great being able to apply my knowledge in the workplace and I would recommend others to stay on in education and reach the highest level of study that they can, in order to progress their knowledge. Starting from a lower level and working my way up certainly made me feel more confident going into industry. My favourite element of the HND course was Information Systems. Everything I learnt from my tutor I carried on to my further study at university. We also had to complete a work placement as part of the course, which I did with the IT department here at the College. This was great experience to go on my CV.

Michael’s Story CONSTRUCTION & THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT HND

I am a Brickwork tutor here at the College and was offered the opportunity to take one day a week out of work to study for this undergraduate qualification. Before I got into teaching, I’d been a Bricklayer from the age of 15. I’ve always been interested in the technical side of construction, as well as management, so when the opportunity arose to study this in more detail, I was keen to accept. I’m really enjoying gaining a broader knowledge of the construction process; things that you don’t necessarily learn being in a trade, such as planning laws and building regulations. My favourite part of the course, however, is the 3D modeling programme we use, called Revvit, and the work on surveying. It’s also good to work alongside other students on my course who have come from different areas of the industry, for instance, one is a maintenance manager at the hospital. There’s also a good mix of ages.

“It’s been challenging getting back into education alongside work and I feel it will be well earned when I qualify at the end of the three years! My tutors are brilliant; it’s not always easy to teach your colleagues, but they have been completely professional throughout.” I’ve been teaching for the last seven years - first in a Youth Offenders prison and then here at the College - and I intend to continue teaching once I finish the course. The qualification will enable me to teach within the technical department as well, so I’ll have more options. If ever I decided not to teach, I’d love to pursue a career in construction management.

The course is designed to support industry by providing highly-skilled and motivated individuals that have the opportunity to progress into a broad range of engineering careers.

GENERAL ENGINEERING BTEC HNC/HND

Edd’s Story

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING HND I first came to the College on day release from my job with Intra; a company specialising in manufacturing and precision measurement industrial products, based in Hitchin. I started as an Electrical Design Engineer and am now leading the way on noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) technology, which is more of a customer facing role where I get to travel and install equipment. My employer has paid for my whole journey through College, and an undergraduate course was always something to be pursued. I do a lot of data handling in my job and so the step up in maths on the course has allowed me to apply myself more at work. The course has also helped me to have an appreciation of what goes on, from an electrical aspect, on the parts we buy in, as we tend to work day to day on the bigger scale stuff.

“My tutors are very approachable and I have developed a good rapport with them over the years. The staff here stay for a long time, which means they fully understand the course and its outcomes, unlike at other colleges I have experienced where there is a high staff turnover. They’re also true industry experts.” The new Buchanan building on campus is fantastic and we were lucky enough to see it being built. The robot lab and programmable logic controllers (PLC) allow students to use equipment as they would in industry, rather than just learn about them in theory. I may progress on to the full degree after the HND but would consider taking a year-long sabbatical to do so. With the increased intensity of such a programme, I’d want to give it my full attention. I fully intend on staying with Intra; they are the only company developing this technology for the automotive industry and it’s still very relevant for me.

PERFORMING ARTS HNC/HND I came to College to study an undergraduate qualification after completing my A-Levels. I had originally planned to progress on to an apprenticeship in Media Production, but after being told I had a talent for drama and acting, I chose this course at College to focus on developing my skills in this area. I had also been advised that I would be eligible to apply for some of the high-end drama schools at that time, such as RADA and Guildford, but I’m glad I chose to come to College because it has given me such a good grounding in acting skills and techniques. If I do decide to aim for drama school after College then I will feel much more comfortable because of the excellent course content and teaching that I have received here. I was homeschooled up until the age of 14 and being at College has given me so much confidence.

“I love all the elements of this course, including learning about different practitioners, techniques, accents and camera work. I came into the course solely as an actor and I now feel like an all-round performer.” We learn to sing, dance and even learn about different parts of the body, but the course also gets you ready for the pressures of working in the industry and increases your confidence for interviews and other situations in general life. My tutors are kind and motivated. They treat you as adults and provide you with all the support you need, while pushing you to do your best. Neil’s Story MEDIA PRODUCTION FdA

A few years after leaving school I did a Foundation Art degree at a college back home in Northern Ireland. I then left education and worked in retail for over 10 years before taking an Access course. This got me to the necessary level to apply for the Foundation Degree when I moved to Bedford last year. I used to write scripts for screen plays just as a hobby and didn’t know what to do with them, so I wanted to learn about the industry and how scripts are used. This course is very varied - one week we’ll be filming a documentary and the next we’ll be researching Philosophers, such as John Berger who wrote the TV series, ‘Ways of Seeing’ for the BBC.

“I really enjoy the structure of the course and, while it took me a while to get back into the swing of education, there is such a supportive community within the class. I’m 35 and there are three people older than me in the class, so there is a nice mix of ages.” Our tutors are amazing and really helpful for this level of education. They give you plenty of opportunities to get out and make contacts in the industry. We’re in College two days a week and it’s a really good use of time. The things I’ve learned and people I’ve met have made it such a great experience, particularly as I thought I’d be doing retail forever! I’m considering studying for a full degree once the course finishes and would eventually like to get a job directing, but will keep writing my scripts as well.

Kerri’s Story

PSYCHOLOGY & CRIME FdA I qualified as a Florist back in 2008 after studying at Shuttleworth College and worked in the industry for the next six years. I then had a change of career and started working with children with special educational needs. I’d always been interested in this area, but didn’t know how to get started, so I volunteered and was then offered a full-time role. I now work in a residential home supporting young people with special needs while studying for the Foundation Degree one day a week in College. We have to do 100 hours of placement, so I do this as part of my work and my tutor comes into the workplace to see me.

“I chose College over university because of the smaller class sizes and the fact that this course offered both Psychology and Criminology; most universities offer them only as separate courses.” While I was more interested in the Psychology side of the course to start with, I now want to pursue the Criminology aspect. My plan is to top-up to the full degree here with the College and University of Bedfordshire and then do a law conversion degree. My aim is to become a Solicitor or Defence Lawyer. We’ve been to Luton Crown Court where it was interesting to see how the judge came to their verdict, and we’re going to the Old Bailey as well. Although it was a big shock getting back into education after a break, the tutors are really supportive of everyone in this situation, as well as the fact I have two young children and have to juggle home commitments with a full-time job and College!

This course is a launch pad for those who have experience in outdoor adventure delivery who wish to further their coaching, teaching, instructing and facilitating skills. Chris’s Story OUTDOOR ADVENTURE HND

After studying the Level 2 and Level 3 Outdoor Education courses here at Shuttleworth, I went out to work in industry for four years. I freelanced at various places including Willen Lake and Grafham Water and also got a job at Center Parcs, Woburn, where I still work as an Instructor on the lake and with the high ropes. I realised I needed to study for some higher qualifications in order to progress my career. My tutors had already spoken to me about applying for an undergraduate course, so I decided to return to College. I am really enjoying the practical elements of the HND. When I looked at university courses they were all theory based, so the only way to get practical experience was to join clubs outside of the course.

“For me, coming back to study is about adding to my existing knowledge in order to grow my portfolio and open up more opportunities, and this is exactly what Shuttleworth College offers. “ Many of us on the course are already qualified in certain activities and so we get to focus on set activities for our personal development; for me it’s currently white water rafting and climbing. Plus being at College enables us to take other qualifications at very reduced rates. I have since got my RYA power boat and BMC climbing qualifications. The contacts we gain through our tutors are invaluable. They have all worked in industry, so the course is great for networking. Their knowledge base is also excellent and they are always here to help us. They recently set up an interview day where companies in industry come in to talk to us. We also get to join them to teach the Level 2 students once a week in their practical sessions. I am planning to move on to the BA top-up after the HND. I’m considering training to become a Tutor or Lecturer at a college, which I’ll need to take a PGCE for, or I may continue freelancing. In the meantime I’m hoping to travel to Australia and New Zealand next year to experience the outdoor industry over there.

Chloe’s Story SPORT SCIENCE HND

My goal is to become a Sports Psychologist and studying towards a degree here at College is my first step towards this. I did my Level 3 qualification here and after that it was very important to me to be in an environment where I knew I’d succeed, and which would enable me to go on and complete a full degree at university. I used to play football as a Midfielder and now enjoy going to the gym. I also love helping people get to the bottom of who they are and how things in life affect them. I recently read a story about the Golfer, Rory McIlroy, and his experience with a Sports Psychologist. I realised that, whether it’s one person or a whole team you work with, sports psychology helps people get better and be at the top of their game again. Studying sport science combines the coaching and physiological side of sport with the study of the mind; all elements that I need to gain experience in to pursue a career in the field. There are so many elements of the course I enjoy, such as biomechanics, anatomy and physiology, as well as the combination of science and maths to discover, for example, how humans move through their joints. The course also offers plenty of opportunities outside of College, including a trip to Irthlingborough Activity Centre to work with young people.

They always have time for you and will provide references for work.” I’m looking to top-up to a full degree after College at the University of Bedfordshire, Nottingham Trent University or St Mary’s University in Twickenham, which offers a specialist Applied Sport Psychology course. I’d like to get some more work experience under my belt after university and do a Masters. My ultimate goal is to get a PhD in the subject.

45 CREDIT UNIVERSITY CERTIFICATE You will cover understanding of educational theory to conceptualise the process of developing a command of numeracy/maths, barriers to numeracy/maths learning and how to develop strategies to overcome them, evaluation of a range of teaching methods and approaches and associated materials, development of your own numeracy/ maths skills to standards required in subject specifications. Enhancing your teaching through constructive use of reflection and feedback.

FUTURE OPTIONS Each certificate is worth between 30-45 credits, which may be used as building blocks towards a full Bachelor’s degree at university. Alternatively the course can be used as evidence for professional development.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You must be engaged in teaching in postcompulsory (further, adult or workplace) education for at least 30 hours per year. To start a certificate you must also have completed a Cert Ed/PGCE (page 107), but you may be admitted to the course without this qualification if you can demonstrate the ability to work at Level 5. A successful interview will also be required.

ASSESSMENT METHODS Assessment on the course is via a system of credits. Credits are awarded when you can demonstrate, through a portfolio of work or project, that you have met the learning outcomes of the units on each certificate. Assessments may also include written assignments, personal logs and observations. For courses delivered through distance learning, online sessions will be used for discussions and group exercises, which you will need to supplement with independent study.

Kylie’s Story

TEACHING IN POST-COMPULSORY EDUCATION (CERT ED/PGCE) CERTIFICATE I have worked in an early years setting since leaving school. A few years back, I was working in a nursery as a Deputy Manager and decided to study for a degree in Early Childhood Studies at the University of Northampton. After graduating I was offered a teaching position at Tresham College on their Childcare courses, which I would do alongside studying for my PGCE with the College. Having the balance of teaching experience, and being able to discuss things in the classroom with my PGCE group, has been really valuable. I decided to focus my Action Research Topic on the roles of the Tutor and Personal Achievement Tutor in colleges, and whether students think they need both. This was a really helpful part of the PGCE course, because it enabled me to choose an area I wanted to look at it in more detail and understand it better. Everyone in my PGCE group is very supportive and we have plenty of discussions into teaching methods and approaches that we can incorporate into our own lessons. It’s also nice to be able to compare the different settings people work in; for instance, one of my fellow students works in a SEN school.

“My tutor is very enthusiastic and is always there to support me. I feel I am better supported studying at College compared to university, and my tutor is so invested that he will adapt his lessons to suit our different workplace environments.” The PGCE has taken up a lot of time, but has been a great experience and one that impacts my teaching on a daily basis. I’m looking forward to developing the work placement side of the course for my students next year to ensure they are getting the best industry experience they can.

You will have the option to complete a variety of trips and visits to enhance your studies. Past residential destinations have included Dubai and Malta.

We have strong links with Swissport, London Luton Airport, local hotels, Woburn Safari Park and many other travel & tourism providers. Previous students have gone on to complete full degrees at universities such as Northampton, Sunderland and Brighton. Many have secured excellent positions including cabin crew for Etihad Airways and roles at Wrest Park country estate.

AREAS OF STUDY Mandatory units studied include: The Contemporary Travel and Tourism Industry; Managing the Customer Experience; Professional Identity and Practice; The Travel and Tourism Business Toolkit and Leadership and Management. FUTURE OPTIONS On successful completion of the HNC you can progress on to further study with our HND or choose to enter employment. On successful completion of the HND, you will have the option to top-up the qualification to a full Bachelor’s degree at university or enter employment. Managerial roles cover a wide range of disciplines such as tourism development, visitor attractions, flight and passenger operations, marketing and sales, events and destination planning.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL & TOURISM MANAGEMENT HNC

I studied Travel & Tourism Level 2 at the College back in 2012 and then lost interest in learning for a while. I’ve always wanted to be successful and came back to College last year to do my English and maths Functional Skills. It was then that I approached one of the Travel & Tourism tutors on campus and got an interview for the HNC. Travel & Tourism can lead to so many different roles in industry. The HNC covers management as well, so you get a taste of business, which I really enjoy. We also learn about marketing, life cycles and training and coaching. I’m very keen to help give others the opportunity to learn and so I want to pursue the training and coaching side further after College, perhaps by working in staff training for tour reps or travel agencies. My tutors are very supportive and, while the work is challenging, it gives me something to strive for and gives me routine. We’re in College two days a week, but the other days are spent on coursework. We do a lot of presentations, video and group discussions, which is good training for a customer-facing industry, and the tutors always make you feel comfortable.

“This year we went to Dubai, which is something I didn’t think I’d experience at this point in my life. I loved the aquarium and the Burj Khalifa.” I want to progress on to the HND next year and then top-up to a full degree at university. For other people considering coming back to education after a break, I’d say make sure you’re prepared and organised, and don’t worry about being a bit older than others in the class. It’s actually a good thing as different opinions come out in discussions, which are really helpful.
