QUALIFICATION TYPES ENTRY LEVEL CERTIFICATES These are nationally recognised qualifications with no entry requirements that aim to build your skills and increase your confidence in a subject.

BTEC DIPLOMAS BTECs are work-related qualifications designed to link closely with industry, allowing you to demonstrate your knowledge and skills through practical work. Assessment of your progress is on a continuing basis through coursework only – there are no written exams. BTEC Level 3 qualifications are recognised by universities and employers as an alternative to studying A-Levels.

GCSE/A-Level equivalent

Designed to develop your knowledge and skills in a specific job, NVQs cover the vast majority of business sectors and don’t involve exams – you’ll be assessed through your practical work in the College’s realistic working environments (see our facilities on page 10).

BTECS – THE LOWDOWN Over half a million BTECs (at Level 2 and 3) were awarded in 2010/11, with the number continuing to rise. Nationally almost a quarter of BTEC Level 3 students surveyed in 2011 had a job offer confirmed following their course, with two-thirds progressing onto further study at university or college.

Your education at Bedford College is focused on helping you get the job you want – as part of your course you’ll also receive training in the extra skills employers look for to help make you more employable, from written and verbal communication skills to team working skills. Find out more on page 20.

ACCESS COURSES These courses provide a route to degree-level study if you do not have the right qualifications or experience to take a higher education course. Access courses aim to introduce you to your chosen subject, developing your study skills and increasing your confidence and ability with degree-level study. Access courses are recognised by universities across the UK and allow entry on to their degree programmes. Depending on the subject area you choose, assessment of your work can include written exams or practical tests as well as coursework.
