BEDFORD Kempston Campus Situated at the heart of the town on the banks of the River Great Ouse, our £15 million refurbishment has resulted in a campus to be proud of with everything you need in one place, including: LEARNING RESOURCES CENTRE (LRC)

Fresh and modern, the LRC is a great place to study outside of classes. If you need to get a project finished, or meet classmates for some group study, there are workspaces and computers available for your use. There are over 30,000 items in the LRC, including a growing number of e-resources. Having the books you need online means you can learn at home or wherever you go – something that is proving very popular with our current students.

MUNCH & MOCHA RESTAURANT AND COFFEE SHOP

SPRINGS SPORTS & LEISURE CENTRE We have a great gym on campus with top-class equipment, a fitness studio and full-sized sports hall. This beautiful new building, in keeping with the historic streetscape, opened in 2015 and provides a specialist environment for students aged 16+ with learning difficulties and disabilities. GAS & PLUMBING TECHNOLOGY CENTRE Our City & Guilds and British Plumbing Employers Council (BPEC) approved training centre based in Kempston, will provide you with some of the most advanced equipment in the UK including, solar panels, photovoltaic (PV) panels, rain water harvesting, Dimplex ground source, heat and air pumps, and unvented hot water systems.

TRAVEL BY CAR There is limited student parking at our Cauldwell Street Campus. You will need a student permit to park and pay £1 per day. Please note, having a permit does not guarantee you a parking space. TRAVEL BY TRAIN Bedford’s mainline station is just over a 10 minute walk from both our Cauldwell Street Campus and BROOKS Hair & Beauty Salon, with the smaller Bedford St Johns station only five minutes from Cauldwell Street. TRAVEL BY CAR Free on-road parking is available at both of our Technology Centres, with easy access to Woburn Road Industrial Estate just off the major A421 road.

TRAVEL BY CAR Our campus benefits from ample free car parking on site and is a short distance from the A1, with easy access from Biggleswade, Sandy, St Neots, Hitchin and Stevenage, as well as Bedford. ACCOMMODATION If travelling to our Shuttleworth College Campus is difficult for you, we may be able to offer you a place in our halls of residence. You’ll get your own single study bedroom plus access to a modern common room complete with kitchen facilities, comfy chairs, sofas and TV. In 2016/2017 our accommodation cost was £3,960 per year including full board during the week (subject to change, check online for latest information). SUBSIDISED BUS TRAVEL The College-run bus service is subsidised depending on your household income. When was your last Ofsted inspection?

Are the term dates similar to school and how long is a typical day? College terms are slightly shorter than school terms, (see page 5 for our 2017-2018 term dates), but our day is longer than most schools – typically running from 9.00am-4.30pm.

The College was last inspected by Ofsted in March 2014 and graded ‘Good’ with outstanding features. We live outside of Bedfordshire. Can my son/daughter still come to Bedford College? Yes. Unlike the school application process, college places are not based on where you live. My son/daughter has always received free school meals. Will they have to pay for their lunches at College? Your son/daughter may be able to continue to receive free meals in the campus restaurants. You can apply for this through the Bursary scheme. Visit: www.bedford.ac.uk/support How can I keep up to date with my son/ daughter’s progress? We hold parent consultation evenings and issue student progress reports twice a year. What costs are involved in coming to College? If your son or daughter is aged 16-18 our fulltime study programmes are free to study, but coming to College can involve other costs, such as equipment. We are committed to making sure all of our students are safe and happy during their time here at College. If your son/daughter ever has any concerns they can speak to their personal tutor or a member of our specially trained safeguarding team in Student Services. There is also a ‘Staying Safe’ button on Moodle, the student intranet, which they can use to report an incident such as bullying. The College also has a team of trained counsellors.

Who can I turn to when I need help with my studies? As a full-time student you will have a personal tutor, who will provide you with continual support during your time at College. What if I need additional support with my studies? We have a fantastic additional support team for those students and apprentices with particular needs, such as dyslexia, hearing or visual impairment. What do people do after they finish College? An impressive 93% of our students continue in further study or go on to paid employment or an apprenticeship after College. Is there anywhere to go between lessons? In addition to the Learning Resources Centre and Munch & Mocha Restaurant we also have a student common room – Yourspace – which has its own kitchen and TV room. What opportunities will there be to meet new people and make friends? Our students come from all different schools and colleges across the region so everyone is in the same position. There are a number of enrichment clubs and activities held during lunchtimes (see page 24) which are the perfect way to meet new people outside of your study programme.

Horticulture students from Shuttleworth College achieved a silver medal in the 2015 Ideal Home Young Gardeners Show Garden. POWERING AHEAD Powering towards a great career, with the help of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP), is 17-year-old Oskar Kutyla who won the 2016 Engineering Student of the Year award at Bedford College. This award included a cheque for £500 and a week’s work experience at the Formula One powertrain company in Northamptonshire.

ROYAL ACADEMY EXHIBITION

Of 1,400 students nationwide who submitted pieces of work to the 2016 Royal Academy of Arts exhibition, only 45 were selected to be included and, of those, four were Bedford College students. PLUMBING STUDENT ONE OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY

TOKYO 2020 BOUND Table-tennis champion and full-time Sport student Daniel Bullen is working his way towards the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics having recently taken a gold medal in a National School Games event. AWARD-WINNING FLORISTS Two Intermediate Level Floristry students won the Zwetsloots Florist of the Year 2015 Trophy.

Former plumbing apprentice Matthew Jakeman, who works for Pronto Plumber of Bedford, won a bronze medal at the UK Skills Show. Matthew is now working full-time in the plumbing industry.

STEPPING UP THE MEDALS TABLE IN COMPUTING Oliver Davis won gold in the 2015 UK Skills Show at the NEC. Oliver, aged 20, has progressed through the full-time study programmes in Computing here at the College and improved on his bronze medal in the previous year.

At Bedford College, alongside your industry-recognised qualification, you’ll also study English and maths and improve your personal and employability skills. apprenticeships As an apprentice, you’ll get all the benefits of studying with Bedford College for an industry recognised qualification, while working in your chosen industry. We are the largest apprenticeship provider in the county, which means we offer a wide range of apprenticeships for you to choose from. The apprenticeship programmes we offer are listed in the programme pages from page 38. WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? An apprenticeship is a programme of workbased learning. To be enrolled as an apprentice an organisation must have offered you a contract of employment and agreed to pay your wage and support you throughout your training. Your job role must include a range of work relevant to the apprenticeship qualifications you wish to undertake. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete depending on the type and level undertaken. HOW WILL I SPEND MY TIME? For most apprenticeship programmes, you will need to attend College, either for one day per week (day release) or for a few weeks at a time (block release).

rita's story STUDYING: COMBINED SCIENCES I work part-time as an agency carer but I’ve always wanted to go to university to study pharmacy, which would enable me to give patients better treatment and make their lives more comfortable. I really enjoyed chemistry, mathematics and the science practical exercises, and conducting experiments was very interesting. For example in biology we checked the catalyst reaction on human tissue from the heart, lungs and kidneys and in chemistry we did experiments which assessed the synthesis of aspirin.

I also think the research work we did is going to be invaluable when I get to university. Now I know how to research and reference correctly, which is very important at university and not something that is always taught at A-Level.

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Our Animal Science programmes at Shuttleworth College Campus offer the practical, hands-on experience you will need to pursue a successful career working with animals. Our Animal Unit won the Blue Cross Animals in Education Award in 2013, so you will be learning in first class facilities. Year on year our HND Graphic Design students beat UK universities in industry-set challenges for creative solutions in advertising and marketing. What will I study?

During this study programme you will explore various aspects of fashion and textile design, including surface pattern for fashion and interiors, fashion visualisation and illustration, and sculptural textiles/fashion. You will also have the opportunity to learn silk screen printing, machine and hand embroidery, paper making, fabric manipulation techniques, draping, transfer printing, computer aided design, felt making, and drawing. shane's story STUDYING: CHILDCARE ADVANCED LEVEL I’ve progressed through all the levels of childcare, initially starting with Foundation Skills as I didn’t have any qualifications when I left school. I’ve spent much of my life looking after my brothers who have special needs, so I know a lot about children and studying this programme seemed to make sense.

Now I’m progressing on to the second year of my Childcare Advanced Level qualification there are a lot of options open to me, including getting a job in the sector or going on to higher education.

I’m on a work placement now at Pilgrims PrePreparatory School working as a nursery nurse assistant. I’m involved in planning play activities, observing the children and understanding how we can help each child develop further or if they need help with a specific problem. Our tutors have worked in the IT industry in a wide range of roles including networking, programming, PC maintenance, website development and helpdesk support, so you will benefit greatly from their expertise and industry knowledge. Outside of the classroom, educational visits are organised to give you the opportunity to see how IT is used in a real life setting. Previous visits include the Thinktank Science Museum in Birmingham, the Science Museum in London, CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Thorpe Park and Vauxhall. Our Cisco lab was used to host a warm-up for the WorldSkills IT Networking final held in Sao Paulo, Brazil and the WorldSkills organisers praised it as ‘one of the best’ in the UK. STUDYING: COMPUTING ADVANCED LEVEL PREVIOUS SCHOOL: BEDFORD ACADEMY I started at Bedford College on the Level 2 Computing study programme. I came to live in the UK in 2013, so I needed to study English alongside my Computing qualification in order to improve my language skills. I’ve had an interest in computing since childhood. The Level 2 study programme provided me with a broad introduction to IT, but I am really enjoying the Level 3 because we get to focus on networking. I find the way that computers communicate between each other really interesting. Generally, the programme is very well rounded and the facilities here are good compared to other colleges. I also really like the location of the College because it is near to the river and the town centre.

As part of the study programme, I have undertaken a 10 week work experience placement at the Kempston branch of Barclays Bank. I got involved in lots of different tasks including helping to sort documentation and helping customers who came into the bank. I also volunteered at The Skills Show, which is a big exhibition held at the NEC in Birmingham each year. The College had a stand there to exhibit its Computing courses and we had some ‘have a go’ networking activities that I helped visitors with. After my study programme I would like to go to university to study Computer Science.

Our Floristry tutors pride themselves on keeping up to date with new trends, including the use of European and modern design methods, and often demonstrate their own creative flair in national competitions and events. Past students have also gone on to various successes, including one who scooped a Gold medal and title of Chelsea Young Florist of the Year at the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show having created a fantasy dress crafted from floral blooms and two of our Intermediate Level Floristry students, who won the Zwetsloots Florist of the Year 2015 Trophy. There will be lots going on outside of the classroom as well. Our current students have recently visited the newly restored Swiss Gardens at Shuttleworth where they had a talk from the head gardener and they have also enjoyed numerous workshops and talks with local floristry businesses. 1

harriet's story STUDYING: FLORISTRY INTERMEDIATE LEVEL PREVIOUS SCHOOL: HIGHFIELD SCHOOL I have a part-time job in a florist and I really enjoy making people happy by doing something that makes me happy. One of the people I work with had already completed a Floristry course at Shuttleworth College and she highly recommended it. Although I live in Hertfordshire, it hasn’t been a problem getting there as I catch the College bus which stops in Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth and Baldock. We have a ‘Floristry Shop’ at the College, which is a big, walk-in, cold room that helps

to keep the flowers alive for longer. The local wholesaler delivers weekly, first thing on a Monday morning, and we can make suggestions about colour themes and the types of flowers we would like on a Friday, when our tutor places the order. I’m so pleased that I decided to do the study programme and I’m definitely a better florist now. I’ve been offered more work from the shop so I’m now working four days a week. Eventually I’d like to do an Advanced Level programme and I’d definitely consider doing it at Shuttleworth College.

natasha's story STUDYING: BEAUTY THERAPY INTERMEDIATE LEVEL PREVIOUS SCHOOL: ASHCROFT SCHOOL We also cover health and safety, promotion and we get to work on the reception at BROOKS meeting and greeting customers.

I’ve always had a passion for beauty and knew it was what I wanted to do from quite a young age. My favourite beauty treatment that I like to give is a facial; it’s so relaxing and makes you feel better about yourself. One day I’d love to own my own spa. The study programme at College enables me to learn about lots of different treatments including waxing, manicures, pedicures and make-up – and because we are based in a working salon here at BROOKS, we have real clients to work with. It’s the fact that College is so hands-on that drew me to it after finishing school. Half of our time is spent in theory lessons and half doing practical, but I enjoy the theory just as much.

As part of the programme we have to do 50 hours of work experience, but I have done more hours than this at various places including Champneys Spa and local salons. We have also had training days with staff from Dermalogica and Steiner cruise ships. The tutors are really professional, easy to get along with and you know you can go to them for support. My next steps are to move on to the Level 3 study programme and also study for some of the part-time qualifications that the College offers. After that I will be looking at higher education courses.

Guest speakers visit Mount Pleasant to give lectures and demonstrations, which complement the clinics and events held at the College. Students also have the opportunity to organise and run competitions as part of their study programme. DAVID's story ALUMNI STUDIED: HORSE MANAGEMENT ADVANCED LEVEL University of Bedfordshire where he also won a scholarship. “University was a really attractive option for me because of the range of units the course offered and the fact that I’d always had an interest in human health, as well as equine”.

David had studied horse care at Shuttleworth College on day release from school and loved every minute of it. He jumped at the chance to study the subject full-time after his GCSEs and enrolled on to the Horse Management Level 3 Extended Diploma at Shuttleworth College. Since studying at Shuttleworth, David has worked his way up and is currently studying for a Masters in Sport Therapy. “I really enjoyed the programme at Shuttleworth College,” says David, “particularly the riding element. The facilities at the Equine Unit are good and all of my tutors were so helpful and keen to see you do well”. Shuttleworth had set David up for a successful future and, after taking a year out, he went on to study a Sports Therapy degree at the

For his Masters Degree, David is developing both a field-base motion capture system and a baseline measure of riders’ movements during equitation, with the intention of it being used as a training and therapeutic aid. He would later like to develop this into a PhD looking at integrating therapeutic interventions. “I’m also currently working in sport therapy in a private practice where I work with a number of horse riders,” says David. “I loved my time at Shuttleworth and would easily do it all over again.”

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Hospitality & Catering is a hugely varied industry that enables you to be creative, travel and meet new people. From hotels, bars, restaurants, hospitals and the armed services, if you have the drive and enthusiasm, there are many exciting opportunities for you to develop and succeed. Our training department, including our commercial 25 Restaurant, is the perfect place to hone your culinary talent or service skills. The restaurant is open to the public during term time, which means as a student you will be creating or serving delicious dishes to real paying customers under the watchful eye of our supportive tutors. Our students also benefit from participation in national and international competitions. We recently hosted one of six regional finals of Futurechef 2015, which involved exhibitors including Babcock International and BaxterStorey who were on hand to give careers advice to our students for prospective jobs and further training within the industry. One of our students also progressed on to the national final. ellen's story STUDYING: PROFESSIONAL COOKERY INTERMEDIATE LEVEL PREVIOUS SCHOOL: IN AUSTRALIA want to complete the part-time cake decoration course before leaving College with the aim of eventually owning my own café or bakery.

I lived in Australia for 10 years before coming back to the UK last year. I absolutely love cooking and have a particular passion for pastry and cake decoration. I learnt a lot of what I know from my step mum by helping out at her café when we lived in Australia. My dad had studied plumbing at Bedford College when he was younger, so when we came back to the UK I decided to enrol on the Professional Cookery study programme. My tutors are really professional and will always help you out if you are having difficulty with something. The programme has helped me decide that I want to pursue a career in baking, so I am taking a part-time pastry course alongside the full-time cookery programme. I also

Alongside the cooking, we spend some time serving in 25 Restaurant, the College’s on site training restaurant which is open to the public. We also get practical experience in the College’s student restaurant, Munch & Mocha. On a Tuesday morning we work alongside the head chef to help prepare lunch for that day, including any soups, sauces and pasta bakes. Lessons at College are a lot more fun than at school. It’s also a more independent environment – you want to be there to learn and to work towards your own goals.

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS We are very privileged that our Shuttleworth College Campus is situated in a large conservation area containing grassland, woodland, wetland, a working farm, lakes and fisheries centre. Our students spend a lot of time out and about, seeing how things work in industry, as well as winning awards. In 2015, our Horticulture students won a silver medal for their garden design at the Ideal Home Show in London. They also had a visit from TV gardener David Domoney to give them advice about their design before the show. Horticulture students have also visited Stevenage Town Football Club to gain a more practical view of the work done by the groundsmen there. Our Agriculture students work closely with the local farmers and start early in the year with a crop walk with local agronomists to plan for the coming season. They also recently took a trip to the sugar beet factory in Bury St Edmunds to see what happens after the crop leaves the field. There are residential trips to look forward to: our Countryside students have enjoyed a week in the New Forest and Fisheries students spent a few days netting at the Lac de Villedon in France. 1

Abby's story STUDYING: AGRICULTURE ADVANCED LEVEL PREVIOUS SCHOOL: MANSHEAD SCHOOL, DUNSTABLE Once I’d finished my GCSEs I knew I wanted to go to college rather than stay on at school because I enjoy more practical based learning. Shuttleworth College has a really good reputation so we came to an Open Day. The Agriculture tutor was really nice; I had an interview and enrolled on to the course. I hadn’t studied Agriculture before but I really enjoy it. My favourite part is the livestock because it’s very rewarding and I enjoy the challenges it brings – looking after the sheep and cattle, and of course the lambing season! The facilities at Kingshill Farm are brilliant and there is a separate mechanisation yard with all the tractors and farming equipment. I’ve just joined the onsite gym and the library is good too. I live in Dunstable, which isn’t a problem because the College run bus service covers the area.

I’m looking forward to a work experience placement this September at a farm during the harvesting season. You are treated like an adult at College and I get on really well with the tutors – they are always there if you have any problems or questions. In fact, when I started at Shuttleworth I didn’t want to go to university, but my tutor has inspired me to learn more. I’d now love to go on to Harper Adams University when I finish here and hopefully pursue a career in farming. I’d recommend the course to others as it really helps you grow as a person.

More than 5,000 jobs at vehicle and engine producers could be created, along with up to 28,000 in the supply chain, by the early 2020s.1

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Our Vehicle Technology Centre in Kempston is kitted out with engine and repair bays, paint mix and spray rooms and a body repair area. All of our tutors have worked in garages in their careers and every one of our students agrees that they have up-to-date subject knowledge. This means we will teach you techniques that are likely to become compulsory in the future, such as working on electric cars. Our students also benefit from professional links with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) as well as major employers in the area to keep abreast of industry changes: just one example is Vauxhall Motors, who have donated a number of ex-trial vehicles to us to help students test their diagnostic skills on the very latest technology. Some of our students move on to apprenticeships after their course; some with Vauxhall where they have had great experiences, from being a member of a pit crew on the annual VXR Power Event, to servicing and preparing an ambulance for a 10,000 mile charity drive to Mongolia. 1

tamara's story STUDYING: MOTOR VEHICLE ADVANCED LEVEL PREVIOUS SCHOOL: HASTINGSBURY UPPER SCHOOL I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I left school, but I had enjoyed studying Health & Social Care so I decided to enrol on to a childcare programme here at the College. However, I’d always had an interest in cars. My dad owned a garage and my brother works in vehicle accident repair. Coming from a mostly female dominated programme to this one was not a problem – there is a really nice atmosphere in the department and everyone is very welcoming. With no previous motor vehicle experience, I worked my way up. I enjoy the practical side of the programme as I like to get my hands dirty. The facilities are excellent – we usually get a car each to work on – and the tutors teach in a very interactive way. For example, they might bring a part of

an engine into a theory lesson to help explain something technical. I much prefer this way of learning, compared to school. We also have companies come in to talk to us about the motor vehicle industry, including the HGV division of John Lewis, which is based in Milton Keynes. Our tutor recently tasked us with contacting companies about apprenticeship programmes. I had seen a poster around College about Vauxhall apprenticeships and decided to apply. I have passed a maths assessment and have now got through to the second phase of the application process. I would like to pursue a career in the industry, preferably in management, such as a workshop manager, and an apprenticeship would be a good step towards this.

outdoor ADVENTURE DID YOU KNOW? By 2020 there will be 611,000 people employed in the outdoor adventure industry, which means a further 33,000 will be needed.1

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Our Shuttleworth College Campus has beautiful, spacious surroundings where you will develop your outdoor skills, as well as at other venues including Grafham Water Centre and Big Rock in Milton Keynes. You will be involved in a rotation of practical activities on a weekly basis, which will include kayaking, canoeing, orienteering, climbing, archery and sailing, and study a wide range of units associated with coaching, leadership and skills development. You will have the opportunity to undertake a group expedition, be required to attend residential trips to locations such as the Brecon Beacons and the Isle of Wight, and complete an extended work placement in an outdoor centre or related organisation. There will also be various day trips, practical days away and the opportunity to take additional qualifications in sailing, power boating, kayaking, canoeing, climbing and first aid. Some of our Outdoor Adventure students compete for the South East region for the GB elite slalom canoe squad (training at the 2012 Olympic venue, Lee Valley White Water Centre). One student is aiming for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and has found that the College location and timetable has enabled him to keep up his training while studying for a professional qualification. Another student, who lived on Campus in our halls of residence at Shuttleworth, is a downhill mountain biker who has competed at international level. 1

joel's story STUDYING: MUSIC TECHNOLOGY ADVANCED LEVEL PREVIOUS SCHOOL: RUSHMOOR SCHOOL After my GCSEs I considered A-Levels but I knew I wanted to specialise in music, so this programme at Bedford College was perfect for me.

I’ve also learned how to use all the technical equipment and gain a deeper understanding of how the music business works, including publishing rights.

The programme is great for people who are self-motivated, ready to work hard and have a passion to get into the music business. I’ve really enjoyed being able to work with professional software such as Logic Pro, which is one of the main industry programmes for writing music and creating audio effects. I didn’t originally see myself as a producer but now I feel that I have the skills to be able to go into the studio and produce my own work.

I’ve found the music facilities and equipment at Bedford College absolutely amazing – they have everything we need including a top notch recording studio and some great technicians who are always ready to help us.

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Our Sport students have access to a wide range of excellent facilities. Springs is our multi-million pound Sports Centre, home to the College’s highly-esteemed Sport Academy. It features a full sized sports hall, dance studio and fitness studio with cardiovascular equipment and weights. We also have access to fitness laboratories for sport science testing and to Kempston Football Club for outdoor sports. Our Sport Academy provides fantastic opportunities to develop your skills in football, rugby, female football and basketball, compete on behalf of the College and even lead to a career as a professional sports person. RYAN'S story ALUMNI STUDIED: SPORT ADVANCED LEVEL Ryan has been a keen footballer since he was 14 and knew he wanted to study sport after finishing school. Having explored options at his local sixth form, he enrolled on to the Sport Level 3 Extended Diploma at Bedford College. “The tutors really sold the programme to me when I came to an open day,” says Ryan. “They said to me, ‘If you love sport it’s the best place to be’ – and they were right.” “I was quite shy when I started at College,” says Ryan. “I always had the desire to do well but lacked the confidence. College really helped me to progress.” After finishing his Level 3, Ryan moved on to the Sport Science Foundation Degree at the College and then completed a third year at the University of Bedfordshire. Now a graduate, he is looking to study further for a Masters. “Bedford College has done wonders for me,” says Ryan.

Ryan completed various work placements coaching in local schools during his time at College. “I’d watched people coaching others and realised that I too wanted to give something back. Some of my tutors were coaches outside of College, so they helped me to develop my technique.” Ryan is currently studying for his football coaching qualifications and working part-time for Luton Town Football Club as a coach and talent scout. “Confidence is a big thing and since leaving Bedford College I feel 10 feet tall. The College is in no doubt the reason I have got to where I am today”.

Swissport is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest aviation services provider, and is offering a small number of colleges around the country the opportunity to become part of their academy. Being part the of the Swissport Academy will bring a number of benefits to our students including airport visits, guest speakers and a guaranteed interview with Swissport. Our students have a strong track record of finding fantastic employment after their course. Some have become cabin crew for Thomson, Monarch, easyJet and Ryanair; holiday reps for Thomas Cook, Thomson and Kuoni; ground staff for Virgin Atlantic; check-in staff for Menzies Aviation; and customer service staff for Signature Aviation. DOMINIKA'S story STUDYING: TRAVEL & TOURISM ADVANCED LEVEL My journey at Bedford College started five years ago when I studied an Entry Level English Language programme. I’ve now progressed through three levels of Travel & Tourism and I’d like to go even further and study at higher education level.

The College also arranged some work experience for me at the Park Inn by Radisson Bedford Hotel. I was there for two weeks and worked on reception, behind the bar and in the restaurant. They offered me a job at the end of the two weeks, but I’ve decided to focus on my higher education studies instead.

SUBJECT AREA HIGHLIGHTS Studying Public Services will help you to develop the skills, fitness and determination to put yourself ahead of the rest, with career paths that include the armed forces, emergency services, paramedical services or the prison service. All of our lecturers have worked in public service roles such as police officers and soldiers, which give an extra dimension to lessons and will enable you to draw on their vocational experience. As a student, you will have opportunities to visit and train with the RAF, army and fire service. As well as this, you will be able to go on trips. Recent visits have included wild camping in Snowdonia National Park and work experience with the British Army, participating in fieldcraft and military exercises. courtney'S story STUDYING: PUBLIC SERVICES ADVANCED LEVEL I completed my first year at sixth form but, because I’ve always been interested in a career in the armed forces or the emergency services, I decided that this specialist programme at Bedford College would give me far more insight and practical experience to achieve my goal. In fact, everything that we have done on the programme has been directly related to my future career, which is fantastic. Even my tutor is ex-military so he’s got direct experience, which is one of the best things about the programme.

One of the things that I really wanted to develop before I started the programme was my leadership skills and I’m glad to say that they have improved dramatically. Specific leadership units on the programme have given me a good understanding of what’s needed to become a good leader and how I can take those skills further when I go to Exeter University to study a Flexible Combined Honours (FCH) in Criminology and International Relations.
