Introduction The outgoing AoC President Ian Ashman was determined that his year in office would highlight the issue of mental health among FE College students, and the exceptional role FE staff play in dealing with those issues presented by our students. Our approach to the general wellbeing of our students should focus particularly on the positive and on prevention. Our study programmes, enhancement and support processes should all focus on creating strong, resilient people able to deal with life as it is, and able to shape their own destinies. We should take the same approach to our staff. As one of the largest employers in the region we owe a duty of care to those who care for our students. Our aim is to support staff to ensure they enjoy their work, can cope with the inevitable pressure of working in a high-stakes public service, but also maintain a balance in their life, recognising that we are more than just teachers, managers, accountants, marketers etc. The last five years has been tough for FE, especially financially. I am really pleased that, despite this, our College has maintained its investment in activities to support general wellbeing like the Staff Social Group, the Cinderella bonus, end of year events, professional development, employee assistance, and sought to at least maintain living standards, at a time when many colleges have cut these budgets and not made pay rises. This year’s Staff Conference continues that investment. The Staff Conference this year is therefore all about you and your wellbeing. It has been designed to bring us all together; make us think and reflect, give us some tools to help build our resilience, and have some fun at the end of another long, hard, successful year. Enjoy it.
Ian Pryce Principal & Chief Executive
Conference information All staff are required to attend two sessions in the morning and at least one session in the afternoon. The sessions are mandatory and require you to book in advance using the link on Eventbrite which will be emailed to all staff on Monday 19 th June at 12:30pm. It is important to dress appropriately for the day particularly if you are tree climbing, the venue is wide spread and some of the paths are uneven so bring your comfy shoes/trainers. Changing rooms are available for those participating in sports events.
We are asking all staff to use the main Shuttleworth college entrance (postcode SG18 9DX) on the main College drive in Old Warden Village and to car share where possible. Once on site you will be directed to the free parking in the designated field. Only external guests will be able to park in the regular college parking spaces by displaying the event parking badge in their windscreen. Maps of the venue will be located in all rooms; with an extra-large map available in the marketplace (Room 1) which is also the information point should you require help. Some of the speakers from the morning are available in the same rooms in the afternoon to offer 1:1 drop in consultations. The Beauty Apprentices will be giving arm and head massages and the Sports students are offering mini health checks. The Marketplace is also the collection point for various walks, tours and tree climbing activities. Please be aware that the Mansion House is not available to staff on the day. As well as the goodie bags and awarding of competition prizes, all staff present in the marquee at the end of the day will automatically be entered into a grand prize draw. Following the day, we will be asking all staff to provide feedback via a short online survey. We will use this information to plan future wellbeing sessions across the next academic year.
