Entry Requirements
• Level 3 Art & Design: – 4 GCSEs grades 9-4 including English and Maths OR equivalent qualification at Level 2
Why you need to study English & Maths • Government policy is all 16-18 year olds with grades below 4/C are to continue studying English and or Maths. Both are essential qualifications to hold within the development of any career. • If you have passed ‘Literature’ but not ‘Language’ we would encourage you to re-sit • Those not required to undertake English &/or Math will work on an additional qualification relevant to your pathway
What you would be studying All pathways will be undertaking the UAL Awarding Body Applied General Extended Diploma in Art and Design. The aim of the course is to encourage learners to explore and develop their creativity through a broad, diverse introduction to Art and Design structured around their chosen pathway. You will leave with the experience, knowledge and a portfolio of work to prepare yourself for progression to Higher Education.
The objectives of these qualifications are to enable students to: • 1. Develop a critical and contextual awareness of different perspectives and approaches within art, design or related subjects of study or work. • 2. Research, analyse and evaluate relevant information and ideas in order to develop creative solutions. • 3. Understand, adapt and use appropriate practical skills. • 4. Solve complex problems through the application of art, design or related practical, theoretical and technical understanding. • 5. Critically review the effectiveness and appropriateness of methods, actions and results. • 6. Use evaluative and reflective skills to take responsibility for their own learning, development and decision making. • 7. Take responsibility for the research, planning, time and actions required to access progression opportunities. • 8. Present themselves and their work.
How the course is taught and assessed Term 1 An introduction to visual language. Alongside an introduction to a range of techniques and materials you will also be introduced to research skills, reflective evaluation and using this information to enable idea generation/ development Term 2 Allows you to develop and apply this knowledge to a series of mini projects Term 3 You complete an independent, end project. Over the course of 12 weeks you will develop a project based around Awarding body set theme. The majority of the work will be undertaken during lessons A final ‘exam’ will see you uploading up to 30 images and reflecting on your journey • This is marked externally and will ascertain your grade for year 1 Year 2 Introduces more techniques and processes but over longer projects enabling you to work around themes, techniques etc of your choosing (enabling you to build a portfolio around your identity) • The course ends with another independent project (marked internally) and grades from BOTH years are amalgamated for an average mark Throughout the 2 years, work will be formatively assessed against the UAL grading matrix and you will be advised of your working level and ways to improve in the run up to the end unit
Our expectations • You bring a willingness to study and explore a range of techniques and mediums enabling you to enhance your skills and portfolio. • We expect excellent attendance and commitment applied to all areas of the program: main, enhancement, and work experience, tutorial (and English/math/ Workshop where appropriate)
Attendance and self-study required • We expected attendance of no less than 94%. If you are unable to come in you will be given contact details to inform us that day. – Poor unjustified attendance may result in disciplinary proceedings taking place
• We tend not to set homework as we find students naturally engage with the subject at home: research, sketching etc. – If you have missed sessions though we would expect you to catch up in your own time
How long the course is
• This is a 2 year course, equivalent to 3 A Levels. We start early September and conclude at the end of June. • The end graded unit is usually submitted at the end of May • Timetables are structured around 4 days, starting at 9am and concluding at 4:30pm ( this will not be the hours each day )
What could the course lead to • Majority of students progress to HE, either on our own HNC/HND program (with possible BA top up in some pathways) or Degree programs across the country inc some of the top Art schools • Others do progress into employment, apprenticeships etc and support for all options is placed into both the enhancement and tutorial program
Personal Tutor system
• To assist with any issues you have regarding the course or to assist in you finding support for financial and wellbeing issues etc.
Additional costs and equipment required • Throughout the year we will be arranging a series of trips relevant to your course. On-line links for payment will be made available nearer to the time. In general overall cost is around £50 per year. Trips will range from museums/ galleries in London, Oxford etc to conventions and degree shows • Over the Summer you will be sent a list of materials you may wish to purchase to help with your studies. The majority of this you will already have. • Majority of resources required you will discover are available within in the department • Recommended though is a good quality sketchbook that will last for years and possibly a folder to take work away in. Both we sell within the department at a reasonable price
Travel to college
• A ‘means tested’ travel bursary is available for students living outside a 3 mile radius. Once you have accepted
College facilities and support services • We have excellent library facilities our students utilise frequently and an on campus Mezz • Student services are based in the Tower Block (in main reception) and are there to support you with any issues you may have (they will introduce themselves and services they provide during your induction week). • Any financial support you feel you require or are entitled to, you will need to contact this department
