QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE Art & Design BTEC Foundation Diploma

BTEC Higher National Certificates/Diplomas

What is it? This course is designed to prepare students wishing to enter higher education within the field of art and design. It’s a widely recognised pathway that aims to give you further knowledge of a range of disciplines so that you can choose where to specialise. The course is often required by many colleges and universities for entry on to art and design-related higher education courses.

What are they? These higher education qualifications focus on industry skills and are valued by employers as an alternative to university. HNCs and HNDs are mainly assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course – not usually through exams. They’re designed to lead straight to a career in industry or on to further study at university.

How long does it take? The Art & Design Foundation Diploma takes one year to complete. Find out more about this course on page 22.

How long do they take? HNCs take between one and two years to complete depending on the study route you choose, and are generally equivalent to the first year of a full honours degree at university. You can continue your studies at Bedford College by moving on to the HND qualification after your HNC. HNDs represent the next level of study up from HNCs, taking an additional one to two years to complete depending on the study route you choose. They are generally equivalent to the second year of university and you can ‘top-up’ your HND with a further one or two years of study at university to convert it to a full honours degree. Alternatively a HND is a standalone, recognised qualification that prepares you to progress directly into employment.

Access to Higher Education courses What are they? These courses are designed to provide a route to higher education if you don’t have the right qualifications or experience to start a degree. Access courses aim to introduce you to a subject area, develop your study skills and build your confidence and ability with higher education study. Access courses are recognised by universities across the UK and allow entry on to higher education programmes at Bedford College and beyond. How long do they take? Our Access to Higher Education courses take one year to complete. Find out more on page 10.

(HNCs/HNDs)

Foundation Degrees (FdA/FdSc)

What are they? Foundation Degrees are higher education qualifications that have been developed with employers to advance your skills in a specific industry sector. They are assessed through project work, reports, exams, practical work and presentations. How long do they take? A Foundation Degree takes two to four years to complete depending on the study route you choose. It is equivalent to the first

two years of a full honours degree and, just like HNDs, you will have the option to ‘topup’ your Foundation Degree and convert it into a full honours degree through an additional year of study at university.

BSc and BA ‘top-ups’ (Top-up from HND or Foundation Degree) What are they? Run in partnership with The University of Northampton or University of Bedfordshire, these courses enable those who have graduated with a HND or Foundation Degree in some subject areas to top-up and achieve a degree qualification without the need to take a full three or four year degree programme. These courses often involve study both at Bedford College and at a partner university. How long do they take? BSc and BA ‘top-ups’ take one or two years to complete.

Teaching qualifications What are they? We offer Certificate of Education (Cert Ed) and Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualifications that are designed to build your teaching skills if you’re looking to begin or develop your career within post-compulsory education. We also offer University Certificates in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) across a range of teaching skill areas which may be taken as building blocks towards a full Bachelor’s degree qualification. How long do they take? Our Cert Ed and PGCE courses take one to two years to complete depending on the study route you choose. Each of our CPD University Certificates is offered on a parttime basis via classroom learning, distance learning or through a combination of both, and take one year to complete. Loans to help pay for your Access course If you are aged 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification, your course will be free for you to study. If you are aged 19-23 and already hold a Level 3 qualification, such as A-Levels or a BTEC Diploma, or if you are aged 24 or over, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your tuition fees. If you then go on to complete a higher education qualification after your Access course, any remaining balance from your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off when you graduate. Access courses aim to build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to progress on to higher education in the subject area you’re interested in. We offer Access courses in: animal management (Shuttleworth College Campus); business studies; combined science; computing; engineering; nursing and healthcare professions (including midwifery); psychology; social science; teacher education.

Areas of study Depending on your chosen specialist subject, you will study subject specific units plus the following core units: essay writing and communication skills; mathematics; research skills; study skills. You will also undertake an independent research project and tutorial. These units are the core subjects of study for all pathways. Future options On successful completion you can progress on to a degree-level course or further qualifications in your chosen specialist area.

Staff expertise Our experienced staff have been teaching Access and developing the programme over a number of years. We offer a strong pastoral support system to ensure that your return to education is made as smooth as possible through an allocated personal tutor. You will also be taught by subject specialist staff with industry experience.

University links We have close links with local universities including the University of Bedfordshire and we liaise with them directly about the entry criteria for applicants and the interview process. Each year, we organise a specific Access Open Day with the University of Bedfordshire so you have the chance to ask the lecturers questions and meet with Access students studying there.

Entry requirements Access courses are one year, intensive courses aimed at mature students (19+) who do not have the standard qualifications to enter higher education. GCSE English and maths are desirable; however, we may consider candidates without these qualifications, depending on an English and maths entry test, where you will need to demonstrate English and maths skills at Level 2, in addition to interviewing successfully. Most universities require GCSE English and maths you will need to research the entry criteria to your chosen universities. You may be able to study either GCSE English or maths as an extra qualification.

RITA’S STORY ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION COMBINED SCIENCE I work part-time as an agency carer but I’ve always wanted to go to university to study pharmacy, which would enable me to give patients better treatment and make their lives more comfortable. I really enjoyed chemistry, mathematics and the science practical exercises, and conducting experiments was very interesting. For example in biology we checked the catalyst reaction on human tissue from the heart, lungs and kidneys and in chemistry we did experiments which assessed the synthesis of aspirin. I also think the research work we did is going to be invaluable when I get to university. Now I know how to research and reference correctly, which is very important at university and not something that is always taught at A-Level.

My tutors have been brilliant. When I decided to apply for a pharmacy course at university, I realised I needed to do chemistry and even though I was a little bit late, they helped me to catch up and complete the extra units that I needed. I’ve applied to do pharmacy at the University of Hertfordshire, so I hope I can impress them with everything that I’ve learned on this course!

We organise regular trips to a range of arable and livestock facilities, food production organisations and diverse business enterprises, as well as study tours in the UK and Europe to investigate wider agricultural practice. You will have the opportunity to take additional industry recognised qualifications in first aid, the safe use of pesticides and forklift handling, although additional registration fees may apply for these.

Further study/career prospects Progression for successful learners will lead to study at the University of Bedfordshire for a final year to gain a Bachelor of Science Degree. Course overview This is a one year full-time route to an Agriculture Honours degree. It is aimed at those who already possess a Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent in Agriculture or a related area. This course is taught by the University of Bedfordshire, but some of your study will take place at Shuttleworth College. The course offers a scientific approach to the management of agricultural land and livestock with a strong focus on how we can help establish global food security. It fosters the use of scientific inquiry and research principles to solve problems faced in a vocational context. Practical use of farm and laboratory resources will be integral to the delivery of learning, with study trips to external agents providing enhanced learning opportunities.

Areas of study During this course you will have the option to study a range of units such as: agricultural science research project, environment and climate change, animal physiology and disease and food security.

Further options The course can lead to careers in arable management, crop and livestock research, land management and conservation and scientific research into animal health and nutrition. The course can lead to careers in animal care, conservation and scientific research into animal health and nutrition. HOLLY’S STORY ANIMAL MANAGEMENT FOUNDATION DEGREE (FdSc) I progressed directly from the Level 3 programme at Shuttleworth College to the Animal Management Foundation Degree. Originally I hadn’t intended to go on to higher education, but I enjoyed the Level 3 programme so much and in particular loved working with the animals in the College’s Animal Unit, which is such a unique facility. I really bonded with the animals, so it made it very difficult to leave! As I expected, the higher education course was quite intense but I was also given some fantastic opportunities.

As part of the ecology unit in my first year, I had the chance to go to Hungary for 10 days to meet with fish farm experts and representatives from across the EU. Also, as part of the degree, I spent some time volunteering at Wrigglies Exotic Pets in Biggleswade which led to me being offered a part-time job as an Exotic Livestock Technician. So now I get paid to work with cobras, rattlesnakes and large alligators! My plan is to top-up my degree by completing a BSc Animal Behaviour & Welfare course and then I may even go on to do a Masters. I see my future in the animal management industry and that’s partly because of the great experience I’ve had at Shuttleworth College.

KIRSTY’S STORY GRAPHIC DESIGNER I don’t think I would be where I am now if I hadn’t done the Graphic Design course at Bedford College. I feel that I had a better experience than some of my friends who went to university because of the one-to-one support I received at the College and the opportunities I had to show people in the industry my work, such as exhibiting at D&AD’s New Blood exhibition in London.

I did work experience with Ted Baker in the first year I was at College and then kept in touch with them throughout my course. Once I graduated they gave me a six month internship which led to a job at the end of it. After 18 months at Ted Baker I moved on to work at Crew Clothing Company’s head office, as a graphic designer. Whilst I was at Bedford College, I enjoyed developing my design skills and becoming an expert in using programmes such as the Adobe creative suite. I also worked on live briefs for local companies which enabled me to pay for my exhibition space at D&AD New Blood. I feel that the Graphic Design course at Bedford College prepared me very well for working in the industry and made the transition from College to full-time work very smooth.

EMMA’S STORY Construction HNC/HND When I was growing up, my dad did a lot of renovation and extension work on the houses we lived in and, more recently, my older sister started working in a maintenance/surveying role, so I’ve never been too far removed from the world of construction. After school I actually studied hairdressing. Although I enjoyed it, I knew it wasn’t the right career path for me. I moved on to the full-time Level 3 Construction course here at Bedford College, which was very practical.

I wanted to study at degree level without having to go to university, so the HND suits me perfectly. The flexibility of the course enables me to work part-time as a trainee quantity surveyor for a company that builds private and social housing. My role largely involves sending out tenders and reviewing quotes. Being in this environment on an almost daily basis complements my College course, because I learn better when I can see something happening in practice. I can also apply the theory I learn in lessons at work. The course curriculum is very broad and covers everything from science and materials, to measuring. Assessment is through coursework, presentations and group work rather than exams, and there is plenty of interesting discussions during lessons. I’d recommend the course to other students looking to get ahead in the construction industry.

This course offers you the opportunity to reinforce existing make-up, hair and styling techniques and applications while enhancing your skill-set to an advanced level. You will develop the skills to prepare you for a career as a practitioner in this specialist area. There is a practical emphasis on your coursework which, in conjunction with theoretical work and research, strengthens your abilities within this specialist field.

Areas of study The course has been designed to enable to develop the skill-set to work as a freelance make-up artist. Your study will be divided into four key areas: Business skills, industry experience, practical application and academic study skills. You will be actively encouraged to begin working as a freelance make-up artist at the end of the first year. The assignments are designed to develop an idea from initial concept through final realisation to photographic sessions and editing techniques before evaluating the final result. The cultural and historical context of a topic is explored, to enhance the design and realisation of the practical work.

Industry links We have close links with all the local theatres in Bedford, plus production companies in London and the Midlands providing you with opportunities for work related activity while on the course. MEHOOL’S STORY MUSIC TECHNOLOGY FOUNDATION DEGREE (FdA) Coming from a musical background and with a passion for playing Indian percussion instruments, studying music was an obvious choice for Mehool. He studied Level 2 and Level 3 Music Technology at Bedford College after leaving school and then moved on to the Foundation Degree. “I looked at going to sixth form after my GCSEs, but the facilities at Bedford College were so much better than anywhere else locally. The tutors were very helpful and pushed you to do your best, even though I had to adjust from using Windows to Apple with the College’s industry standard equipment”. Mehool not only learnt all the theory and practical skills during his time at College, he also discovered his ‘signature’ sound while working on his major project.

We had to produce our own album from scratch, which allowed us to be very creative. Mine was called ‘East Meets West’ and is a blend of Indian heritage and Hip Hop, Dance and House styles. I also really enjoyed the music and media unit, which is all about composing music for commercial purposes such as TV adverts”. Mehool is already working with some artists under a small record label and his next steps are to top-up his qualification to a full degree at the University of West London and eventually become a record producer.

LEANNE’S STORY PSYCHOLOGY & CRIME FOUNDATION DEGREE I studied the part-time Level 3 certificate in Counselling here at the College before moving on to higher education. I chose this Foundation Degree because the flexibility of the course fitted with my family commitments, with one full day of study in College per week. I really enjoy the course. Our tutors are very approachable and make the lessons fun. The tutor that teaches the crime part of the course is an ex policeman, so we benefit from his experience. I’ve completed some work experience as part of the course with victims of crime at Victim Support in Bedford and was recently nominated by them for a University of Bedfordshire Student Appreciation Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community. I’m also a student rep for the course, which involves relaying feedback from the class to the College at regular meetings. I’m considering teaching as a future career. This would involve topping up my Foundation Degree to a full degree with a third year of study, and then a one year PGCE.

I’d recommend the course to other mature students coming back into education; there are not many other places that offer the subject locally and the fees are cheaper than university. You also get to learn alongside people from all different backgrounds, which enable you to gain others’ perspective on things.

This course is a launch pad for those who have experience in outdoor adventure delivery who wish to further their coaching, teaching, instructing and facilitating skills. RYAN’S STORY SPORT SCIENCE FOUNDATION DEGREE (FdSc) Ryan has been a keen footballer since he was 14 and knew he wanted to study sport after finishing school. Having explored options at his local sixth form, he enrolled on to the Sport Level 3 Extended Diploma at Bedford College. “The tutors really sold the course to me when I came to an Open Day,” says Ryan. “They said to me, ‘If you love sport it’s the best place to be’ – and they were right.”

I was quite shy when I started at College I always had the desire to do well but lacked the confidence. College really helped me to progress. After finishing his Level 3, Ryan moved on to the Sport Science Foundation Degree at the College and then completed a third year at the University of Bedfordshire. Now a graduate, he is looking to study further for a Masters. “Bedford College has done wonders for me,” says Ryan. Ryan completed various work placements coaching in local schools during his time at College. “I’d watched people coaching others and realised that I too wanted to give something back. Some of my tutors were coaches outside of College, so they helped me to develop my technique.” Ryan is currently studying for his football coaching qualifications and working part-time for Luton Town Football Club as a coach and talent scout. “Confidence is a big thing and since leaving Bedford College I feel 10 feet tall. ELLIOTTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S STORY EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE FOUNDATION DEGREE (FdA) Seeing children progress is something I find really rewarding. My mum is a childminder so when I was younger we often had children around and I began to think that teaching could be the right career for me. I started volunteering in a school after finishing my GCSEs and enrolled on to the Teaching Assistant apprenticeship programme with Bedford College. On completion of my apprenticeship, the head teacher at the school offered me a full-time teaching assistant role and I now work across different age groups, from Reception to Year 4. In my spare time I play rugby for Kempston Town and help coach the under 18s team. The flexibility of the Foundation Degree fits well into my work commitments and it is the next step on my way to becoming a qualified teacher. On completion, I aim to top-up my qualification to a full degree at the University of Bedfordshire and then do a PGCE.

The course has been a real eye opener; it makes you look at things in different ways and I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be as comfortable doing my job without knowing some of the theory that we have learnt in lessons. I really like that we can discuss things as a whole group. The other students in my class are of different ages and work in a variety of roles, so we all bring our own experiences into class and apply different ideas to help us improve practice. University Certificate – Tutoring, Guidance & Support in the Lifelong Learning Sector 30 CREDIT UNIVERSITY CERTIFICATE. You will cover theory and practice of the guidance and tutoring role, individual learner plans, action planning and target setting, best practice principles for developing an effective tutorial course, evaluation and development of own practice, professional values and practice necessary for effective guidance, and ethical and legal dimensions of the tutor role, reflection on personal skills in tutoring and ways of continuing your professional development, plus understanding the boundaries of the guidance and tutoring role and the importance of effective referral processes.

Future options Each certificate is worth between 30-45 credits, which may be used as building blocks towards a full Bachelor’s degree at university. Alternatively the course can be used as evidence for professional development.

Entry requirements You must be engaged in teaching in post-compulsory (further, adult or workplace) education for at least 30 hours per year. To start a certificate you must also have completed a Cert Ed/PGCE (see page 69), but you may be admitted to the course without this qualification if you can demonstrate the ability to work at Level 5. A successful interview will also be required.

Assessment methods Assessment on the course is via a system of credits. Credits are awarded when you can demonstrate, through a portfolio of work or project, that you have met the learning outcomes of the units on each certificate. The UCAS tariff converts different qualifications and grades into equivalent point values (e.g. a Distinction grade for a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma is worth 48 points and a Merit grade is worth 32 points, or an A grade for an A-Level is worth 48 points and a C grade is worth 32 points and so on) – to find out what your existing qualifications are worth, just use the tariff table online at www.ucas.com Deadlines You should aim to submit your application to UCAS by 15 January 2018. We can take applications received through the UCAS main scheme up to 30 June 2018 if there are still vacancies on your course – but we advise you to apply earlier. Direct applications If your course says ‘Apply direct to Bedford College’, just find your course via www.bedford.ac.uk/courses and click ‘Apply’. You can apply for a course at any time online. The BA and BSc (Hons) degree top-up courses require you to apply directly to either The University of Northampton or University of Bedfordshire. Please go to the relevant ‘top-up’ course webpage at www.bedford.ac.uk/courses and see ‘How to apply’ section for more information.

4. Attend an interview

For some of our courses, after you apply you’ll need to attend an interview with one of our tutors who’ll be able to ensure that the course you’ve chosen is right for you, as well as answer any questions you may have.

5. Confirmation

You’ll then be notified of the outcome of your application either by the College (for direct applications) or through UCAS (for UCAS applications). The notification will explain to you what you need to do next if you have been offered a place on your course.

6. Come to our HE Welcome Day – September 2018

Our HE Welcome Day gives you the chance to meet your tutors, make friends with students who’ve also applied for your course and find out a lot more about what you’ll be studying in the coming year so, by the time your course begins, you’ll know exactly what to expect.
