Principal’s Update
Ian Pryce CBE
CEO The Bedford College Group
Principal’s Update Oscars season
The very model of a modern merger general
While the Oscars may have lost their shine this year, the FE equivalent, the Pearson Teaching awards became even more prestigious. It is therefore brilliant news that Steph Lee Vae has been shortlisted for FE Lecturer of the Year and our Motor Vehicle Team have been shortlisted for FE Team of the Year.
Our merger with Central Bedfordshire College (CBC) has now been communicated to employers, students, staff and the wider community. Both colleges want to make this a model merger and it is important we learn from the 2017 merger that created our Group. We will be actively picking your brains to identify things we could do better this time around, so please feel free to help us with that task. We aim to work closely with CBC to ensure we do not have to delay agreed changes to their curriculum or budget for next year, even though the merger will occur partway through the year.
St David’s Day All our staff are good people but Director of Construction, Dave Wilkins, has been anointed as a Saint Ambassador for his work with apprentices. The accolade is thoroughly deserved given how much time Dave devotes to the sector construction group BACH and to local charity Connolly Foundation.
Tough Times We appreciate just how tough the next few years will be for many staff, with inflation at very high levels and eye-watering increases in utility bills. We will be looking at ways we can help individuals with these pressures, perhaps through greater flexibility around our work as well as pay awards and opportunities to progress. The merger creates some economies of scale and more progression opportunities. These financial pressures apply as much to the Group as to our households, and this year’s budget round is very challenging for the same reasons, higher taxes, higher fuel bills, and higher pension contributions. We are therefore looking to involve everyone in creating next year’s budget, allocating funding to each area and asking them to think about how best to work within that envelope. I will be emailing staff with more details on how this will work in detail, such as the activities that must be delivered within the funding envelope.
Bedford Tower upgrade At the recent Town Bid board meeting, Pat Jones presented our proposal to upgrade the Tower Block (opened by Rab Butler in 1959). It was enthusiastically approved by every member, the first of the Bedford town bid projects to be approved. We still need to secure planning consent but it now looks like we will be adding a superb, new-look, net-zero, statement building on the Bedford riverside.

WALKING FOR WELLBEING May is National Walking Month and now that the weather is finally improving, what could be better than taking more time to walk for the benefit of your wellbeing? Walking is not just about the occasional one-off, feel-good factor, being active can have a whole range of benefits to both your mental and physical wellbeing. It can improve self-perception, self-esteem, mood and sleep quality as well as reducing stress, anxiety and fatigue. Physically active people have up to 30% reduced risk of becoming depressed, and staying active has been shown to help those who are depressed with their recovery. As we get older staying active can improve cognitive function, memory, attention and reduce cognitive decline that can lead to conditions such as dementia.
Kettering campus – every Wednesday leaving the Windmill Avenue campus at 12.45pm meeting in the foyer before walking over to Wicksteed Park. This activity is being led by Mel Tew if you have any questions. Bedford Campus – the next set of walks will be confirmed as soon as possible, so keep your eye out on the Connect Wellbeing page and All Staff email briefings. If any staff member would like to lead additional walking activities, please let Olivia Morton know the details and she can include them in the weekly All Staff bulletin. More information on National Walking Month can be found at www.livingstreets.org.uk/get-involved/campaignwith-us/national-walking-month
Walking with others also improves wellbeing as human interaction can lift our spirits and stimulate our minds. With this in mind, the wellbeing group has set up walking groups that anyone is welcome to join, the details are as follows:

In the running for Energy Efficiency Award
Alongside Salix Finance, The Bedford College Group has been shortlisted for the Association for Decentralised Energy’s Heat and Efficiency Award for Design and Innovation 2022. The Association for Decentralised Energy’s annual awards are for those involved in decentralised energy work, recognising and celebrating the people and projects which have developed innovative decentralised energy solutions designed around the needs of the user. As part of efforts to significantly reduce carbon emissions, the Group has utilised a £2.8 million grant from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS), which was delivered by Salix and funded by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). This allowed us to implement major infrastructure changes across our Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire campuses throughout 2021, in support of our goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. We are expecting to save over 350 tonnes of carbon and £88,000 annually through the ambitious heat decarbonisation plan led by Executive Director of Finance, Pat Jones and her team. The PSDS grant has enabled us to progress with works for the installation of a water source heat pump at our Brundtland Building which is licensed to take water from the Ouse River. This upgrade works as a heating system; as well as enabling us to replace gas boilers and decarbonise the heating of the building.
The Brundtland building, which houses the new Centre for Modern Construction is now carbon negative following the upgrades. Principal, Ian Pryce said “It is important that educators show leadership when it comes to sustainability. We have tried to invest in making our buildings more energy-efficient and the Salix grants have helped us accelerate those improvements in line with the wishes of our students and our communities. I am delighted the Estates team has been recognised in these awards. Plans are in place across the Group to reduce carbon emissions through our infrastructures, which include controlling heating through Genius Controls which operate similarly to movement sensors. This technology detects when there is movement in the room and sends a signal to generate heating and manages the levels when the room is vacant. Justin Morris, Programme Coordinator for Salix’s Colleges and Universities team, said “Bedford College really capitalised on the PSDS by implementing an innovative and holistic approach to decarbonise their estates, particularly through installing Water Source Heat Pumps via the River Ouse. This could not have been made possible without Pat or Dave who have been ecstatic about the project from the onset and are an inspiration to the college. It’s been a pleasure!” We look forward to joining the other finalists on 15 June 2022 at London’s Hurlingham Club for an evening celebrating innovative heat and efficiency energy projects from across Europe. National Leader Making College Spaces Nicer of Further Places Education Ian Pryce CBE, Principal and CEO of The Bedford College Group has been appointed to a prestigious national role by the government. The Department for Education has refreshed its roster of National Leaders of Further Education (NLFEs) adding individuals from high-performing institutions to step up and support colleges in need of improvement. The national leader’s programme sits alongside the Further Education Commissioner’s office as part of the government’s support and intervention regime for colleges, sixth form colleges and designated institutions in England. NLFEs work with senior leaders to provide strategic mentoring and advise on the development and delivery of improvement plans.
Calling all Green Fingered Colleagues - We need your help! As part of our College Social Responsibility programme we are looking to make our external College spaces nicer places to be and at the same time improve our environment. We have procured a selection of seeds and would like to invite our colleagues who are experienced gardeners to take part in our Grow On campaign. We have a selection of seeds waiting to be grown into beautiful small plants that can then be returned to us ready for planting out on our sites at the end of May. If you are a keen gardener and would like to participate in this venture, please email mgriffin@bedford.ac.uk and we will arrange to send the seed packets to you.
To be eligible to become an NLFE, applicants need to have clocked up at least five years as Principal or Chief Executive and have achieved at least ‘good’ judgements in overall effectiveness, leadership and management and teaching, learning and assessment at their most recent inspection. Ian Pryce remains Principal and CEO of Bedford College, a role he has held for nearly 25 years. The roles are unpaid, but an NLFE’s college receives a £10,000 per year bursary to cover costs for travel, staff cover and professional development.

Merger with Central Bedfordshire College Announced Following a rigorous selection process, Central Bedfordshire College has chosen to merge with The Bedford College Group. The merger is proposed to take effect from 1 February 2023 when Central Bedfordshire College will join The Bedford College Group to serve communities across the whole of Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. Until the time of the merger, management teams and governing bodies will be working closely together to ensure a seamless transition, and to put plans in place to expand the educational offer to meet the future skills needs of the growing communities the Group will serve. Allan Schofield, Chair of The Corporation at the Group said: “The Bedford College Group is delighted to have been selected as the merger partner for Central Bedfordshire College. It brings together the two largest post-16 educators in the local authority area and creates a financially strong institution which will allow us to expand the educational opportunities to everyone in Central Bedfordshire and Luton.” Ian Pryce CBE, Chief Executive at the Group added:
Dr Ali Hadawi CBE, Chief Executive of CBC, added: “We at CBC are excited by the prospect of merging with The Bedford College Group. This merger will enable us to offer additional courses in a wider range of subjects to a larger number of learners, young and old. In line with the FE White paper, we will be able to serve our communities through richer and more diverse curricula. We will also be able to meet the needs of a broader range of businesses across a wide range of industries locally, hence enhancing their competitiveness and success. This important strategic merger will help ensure that the technical and vocational education and training in the local area are best placed to meet the challenges of our economy in the future. This presents an opportunity for us to work with Ian Pryce and colleagues across TBCG to enhance learning and progression for students and create advancement possibilities for our staff.” A consultation period will take place from June 2022. If you have any questions relating to the merger please email them to omorton@bedford.ac.uk
“We are really looking forward to working with Ali Hadawi and his team. We already have a great relationship with the College but this will allow us to deepen and build that relationship to create something very special for our community, employers, staff and students.” Prof James Crabbe JP, Chair of The Corporation at CBC, said: “I am delighted to say that the Governing Body of Central Bedfordshire College agreed to a merger with The Bedford College Group. The merger will allow our vision of skills and vocational education for our region, which we as a College have developed over many years, to become an actuality, with enormous benefits for our learners, our staff, local employers and the community of Bedfordshire as a whole. I am confident that this merger of our College, with its strong culture of an inclusive, calm and caring environment for learners and staff, will fit well with the ethos of The Bedford College Group, and could become a model for mergers in the FE sector.”

Pearson Teaching Awards 2022 The Level 4 area has a specialist hybrid bay with brand new Bosch diagnostics equipment. The Bosch team also arranged to give Motor Vehicle staff a full day’s training. More savings were acquired with free sanding and painting equipment supplied by Farecla, an international bodywork company, after some of the department’s students won their UK bonnet painting competition. The new centre includes a giant balcony over the workshops, social areas with sofas, table tennis and a canteen. Details such as housing the giant compressor outside the workshop were included following previous experience of noisy workshops so ensuring the new Centre was much quieter for students to learn within. All seven classrooms in the Centre have giant Samsung TVs on the wall with hybrid laptops and tablets that connect to the screens.
Fast lane to award for motor team The Motor Vehicle team at the Bedford Vehicle Technology Centre has been shortlisted for the prestigious Pearson National Teaching Awards 2022 for transforming a former College engineering site in Brunel Road, Bedford into a state-of-the-art facility for electric vehicle training. The new Advanced Automotive Technology Centre was not part of the Group’s original capital project plans, so Head of Motor Vehicle, James Woolley managed the project to achieve the overriding objective was to ensure the College could lead the way, offering cutting-edge training in electric vehicle maintenance. James said: “By 2030 the sale of new petrol or diesel vehicles in England will be prohibited – that’s only eight years away. Last year 10% of the new car market was electric and hybrid, which will only increase. We want to be at the forefront of the motor vehicle training – no other college in the region is currently running these courses and of the hundreds of local garages and repairs shops, locally only a handful are qualified – others are turning away work on electric vehicles.” The new Centre houses the latest modern equipment and its own hybrid vehicle to train technicians and give them the knowledge and skills required to work safely on electric and hybrid vehicles whilst carrying out routine maintenance and repair activities. The facility has been designed with a specific workshop for each course level, each with its own repair bays, engines and specific tooling equipment. In the body repair area, there is a paint mixer and spray rooms. Pg.8
Extensive work was carried out over the summer to complete the renovations and ensure that the 54 students who had already enrolled on courses were able to start in September 2021. The new, expanded facility has already seen an increase of students by 15% from the previous academic year and work is underway with Bedford Borough Council to train their vehicle technicians. Within the new Centre it has enabled the addition of new courses in Automotive Studies Advanced, Level 4 and the new Level 3 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement course. Alistair McCrindle CAE MIMI, External Quality Assurer – South Region said: “The facilities, and student experience they have created, is purpose-built for the modern Motor Industry and a credit to Bedford College.” The links with the motor vehicle industry are exceptional. Three students have been able to benefit from work experience with Mercedes who have also agreed to come in to train Level 3 students on the new electric E-class that Mercedes have developed, ensuring all students gain exposure to one of the top-end electric cars that has so far been launched on the market.

Steph skates to short-list Lecturer Steph Lee Vae has been short-listed as FE Lecturer of the Year in the prestigious Pearson National Teaching Awards. Steph is an inspirational art and design lecturer at the Kettering and Corby campuses. In lockdown, Steph set up a YouTube channel with video tutorials and digital workshops for students to access and revisit at their own pace: https://www.youtube.com/ playlist?list=PLR-kezQnAKouxBkjNhNmAOy6tOaZPAJuS This has now developed into an integrated part of lessons. Hybrid learning enables students to go through techniques in advance or after class, ensuring everyone is included and no one is left behind. Steph’s boundless energy, prolific ideas and networking drive the extensive list of opportunities they proactively seek and implement for students. In terms of monitoring individual student progress, Steph not only has regular one-to-ones with students but also holds virtual drop-ins during the holidays for students who need to catch up - ensuring everyone has the support they need to start the new term on track. What’s more, if a student doesn’t turn up to class, Steph personally calls them to find out why.
on a Master’s in Fine Art Digital at UAL which expanded Steph’s practice significantly and provided a deep source of inspiration that has enriched lecturers. Steph has been the Art & Design Department’s Adobe expert since 2017 and is part of Adobe education exchange keeping their knowledge up-to-date and passing on the latest industry skills to students. This academic year Steph faced one of the most tragic situations that a teacher can ever deal with. Lee, a terminally ill student who joined the course in September 2021, died on 23 December 2021. No amount of teacher training can ever prepare a lecturer for this set of circumstances, yet Steph met the challenge with the utmost empathy and compassion, making it their mission to ensure that Lee’s last months at College were the best they could be and ensuring he achieved some lifetime goals. From fun fancy dress days to helping Lee set up a GoFundMe bucket list page, to organising an aegrotat award for Distinction which was presented to Lee before he died. What’s more, Steph involved the whole class, ensuring they were all fully supported by the PAT team and that counselling was available. The impact of Steph’s care for Lee was deeply appreciated by his family and they asked Steph to write part of the eulogy for Lee’s funeral.
In terms of student achievements, Steph’s courses have a track record of 100% retention and achievement over the past few years with 80% achieving a Merit or Distinction on the Level 3 course. Last year, 87.5% of Level 2 students progressed on to another course at the College and 100% of the Level 3 Graphics students progressed into year two. Nicola Mansell, Head of Art & Design said: “Steph consistently goes above and beyond - there are so many examples I could give you. Steph enables a very collaborative working environment, the students are really engaged, Graphics has very high levels of achievement, student feedback is always positive.” Steph is non-binary and an active member of The Bedford College Group’s LGBTQ+ Committee who were awarded GOLD by Stonewall for their LGBTQ+ inclusive education work. In addition, Steph is LGBTQ+ Ambassador for the Art & Design department and an advocate for ensuring all students feel safe and included. Petra Williams, Director of Quality, Learning, Teaching and Assessment said: “Steph is an exceptional lecturer and absolutely deserves to win this award. Steph is so dedicated to providing the best experience for each student on the course. The work they did to develop Art Mesh creative arts magazine through the Group’s ‘Risk it’ system is an example of best practice in the sector and provides exceptional international opportunities for students to publish their work.” In terms of professional development, Steph has taken freelance teaching projects with the British Council in 2016 in Suzhou, China and in 2018 at the National Defence School in Guangdong, China. In 2017, Steph embarked Pg.9

Carrie White is a misfit. At school, she’s an outcast who’s bullied by the popular crowd and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s at the mercy of her loving but cruelly over-protective mother. But Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power, and if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it. Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, the musical Carrie hasn’t been seen since its legendary 1988 Broadway production. Now, the show’s original authors have joined with director Stafford Arima (Altar Boyz) and MCC Theater for a newly reworked and fully re-imagined vision of this gripping tale. Set today, in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine, Carrie features a book by Lawrence D. Cohen (screenwriter of the classic film), music by Academy Award winner Michael Gore (Fame, Terms of Endearment), and lyrics by Academy Award winner Dean Pitchford (Fame, Footloose). Natalie: Hi Farzana, thanks so much for chatting with me today. I am really interested to hear what you have been working on for your Risk It! activity. As you know, Risk It! includes reflecting on the current situation/current practice. What was yours?
Job Opportunities
Farzana: Hi Natalie, yes I’d be glad to let you know what I have been working on. I am already undertaking a PGCE in Higher Education, so am already carrying out research as part of this. I wanted to capture some of this for my Risk It!. Originally, I thought this would come under research but actually, I am trying out small changes in my classroom so I am sitting in the Risk It! strand at the moment.
Course Manager - Technical and Modern Construction
Natalie: This is so interesting. So what did you do? What was your Risk It! Action?
Mechanical Lecturer and Course Manager
Farzana: I am focussing on trying out different methods in my classroom. Just small things, but giving them a go. One of them I have tried – with lots of success – is building in thinking time to my lessons. This sounds really obvious but we don’t often actually dedicate set time to the learners to think and capture notes. I explained to them what this time is for and I make sure I leave them at least ten minutes to carry this out.

EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION MAY 2022 Do I belong here? This year our staff survey includes a section about inclusion. It is vital that all staff are able to be open and frank in their feedback about their experiences, but staff from minoritised groups should reflect on the challenges they have faced due to differences they may have. Most of us have heard the quote that likens diversity to being invited to the party, but inclusion is being asked to dance. One of the things that we are all starting to reflect upon is the concept of belonging. We’ll be asked whether we feel like we have a ‘sense of belonging’ here at the Group. Author Liz Fosslien says that having a sense of belonging is not the same as feeling similar to everyone else. Instead, it’s when you feel safe and valued for embracing what makes you different. She takes it further; ‘Diversity is having a seat at the table, inclusion is having a voice, and belonging is having that voice heard’ Conversion Therapy When I was little I thought that by the year 2022 we would be seeing flying cars and taking regular trips to Jupiter. Yet here we are, debating whether or not it should be made illegal to force someone to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. A total ban on the extremely damaging practice of conversion therapy was promised last year (and was even in the Queen’s speech). It has been proposed that the ban will not now cover trans people. Well, that’s not a ban! Most LGBTQ+ organisations withdrew from the government’s ‘Safe to be me’ conference in June which aimed to celebrate the UK’s position internationally as a beacon of LGBTQ+ inclusion. It was felt that trans people being excluded from the conversion therapy ban emphasises that it is currently not ‘safe to be us’. The conference was subsequently cancelled. You can find out more about conversion therapy at www.stonewall.org.uk/campaign-groups/conversion-therapy We are well aware that this has already had a negative impact on our trans students and staff; and wider LGBTQ+ community members. There is no LGB without the T, and our trans colleagues and students can continue to get support from
