CORPORATION NEWS The last academic year, and in particular the summer term, was extremely busy for the Corporation working through the requirements for the merger between Bedford College and Tresham College. There were a significant number of additional Board meetings and Merger Steering Group meetings to ensure a smooth transition. The individuals volunteer a significant amount of time and support to the College and our thanks goes to them for their hard work. A number of new appointments were made on 1 August 2017 to the Board from both applications by Tresham governors and external candidates. The appointments are: • Avril Bartley-Smith • Andy Cuddihy • Casandra Daubney • Andy Ellis • Greg Guilford

It was also confirmed at the July Board meeting that Shaun Wilson (Tresham) will join Jane Dudeney (Bedford) as a staff governor and that Janis Cirss and Manisha Ahmead had been successful in the student governor elections adding further strength to the Board.
November 2017
The Board was joined by the Principal and Vice Principals, as well as a number of Directors and Heads of Department at lunchtime, and I would like to thank all those involved for their help in making it a successful day. If you have any questions about the Corporation, or any of the opportunities it provides, please feel free to contact the Clerk to the Corporation; Rachel Nicol or one of your staff governors, Jane Dudeney and Shaun Wilson.
Roger Marriott has taken over as Chair from 1 August 2017 for a two year period. The Corporation held a Development Day at Corby on 25 September 2017 to focus on the monitoring of quality across the College. Campus tours were provided in the morning by Corrie Harris and then by Ian Johnson who had to take over when

LOOKING FORWARD This is always a very busy time of year for all of us but in particular we need to be focussing on the following areas: • developing our curriculum plan for 2018-19 • getting our student data accurate and up-to-date • making sure we have the staff we need to deliver a great experience
“
I look forward to continuing our journey together.

PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE AROUND OUR WORLD IN (FEWER THAN) 80 DAYS Nine weeks into merger it is worth reflecting on the remarkable progress made by everyone across both Bedford and Tresham. Within a matter of weeks we have a single organisational structure and have moved to a single system for finance, student data, student tracking, staff intranet, and selfassessment. We have a clear plan to achieve the same for HR and student recruitment. We have a reasonable work-round in light of the fact that we cannot yet create a single college IT domain (we still have two) until we have increased the overall level of IT security. We have held a complete set of staff meetings and conducted Flying Start student inductions at all our sites. We have created a single approach to student behaviour and seen big improvements in student compliance with key behavioural rules. All parents have received a letter setting out how we expect them to help their sons or daughters make the most of their time at college. Pay awards have also been announced across the Group. Of course not everything has gone
to plan, there remains much to do, and merger is disruptive. In the main our teaching teams have ensured our students have been protected from that disruption. This is important because we must always focus first on the student experience. The meetings with support teams have been especially helpful in highlighting issues in implementation, most commonly delays in getting staff, the lack of training on new systems and difficulties arising from the lack of a single network. If these issues affect you they are a major inconvenience, very frustrating and we must take action quickly. Overall however, progress has been remarkable and quick and for that everyone is to be applauded.
BIRMINGHAM BOUND, OUTWARD BOUND
Once the teaching year starts we have become accustomed to a steady stream of excellent stories about our students and staff. Uways Eid and Collette White have made
the national finals of the UK Skills IT competitions that take place at the NEC Birmingham in November. Ross Griffin won third prize at the Hairdressing Journal Barbering awards at Excel, London. And staff are excelling too. We were invited to meet the Duke of York at Buckingham Palace to recognise our work on developing apprenticeships with Outward Bound, one of his charities. The work by Charlie Whewell and team has been singled out for praise.
MULTIPLE CELEBRATIONS
This term always marks the formal celebration of student achievement with two big ceremonies in Kettering and Bedford in November. This term also marks the 125th birthday of Bedford College (or its original parts), the 25th anniversary of the incorporation of Bedford College and Tresham College, and the fifth birthday of The Bedford Sixth Form (or Hogwarts, as it has been named by the Times & Citizen paper). BEDFORD COLLEGE NEWS IT’S A BUSY FIRST TERM FOR PUBLIC SERVICES Public Services students have hit the ground running this term. They’ve enjoyed a visit and talk from our Local Community Cohesion Police Officer about her role in the police force, which all the students found both insightful and rewarding to listen to. Level 3 second years also had the chance to carry out a drill, which helped to support their Discipline unit. In addition, our combined Sport and Public Services rugby team recently played their first league fixture against Long Road Sixth Form. Congratulations to everyone who took part!
HE CONSTRUCTION STUDENTS HELP OUT IN THE COMMUNITY Two students on the Building Services & Sustainable Construction Foundation Degree, Jason Kinns and Jacob Gill, have recently helped out a local resident by providing drawings for some building work to her home. The client said: “This is the first time my husband and I have ever applied for planning permission or needed drawings created. Both Jason and Jacob contacted me after I placed a plea for help on Facebook. Both of them worked so hard to make my dream become reality. I really didn’t expect the quality of the drawings that were produced, they blew me away… The care, attention and time both Jason and Jacob put into this for me made the whole process a lot less stressful…”

NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR FINE ART STUDENTS Following on from last year's success, the Fine Art department have again had student work selected and shortlisted for the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts A-Level Online Exhibition.
This is just one example of the opportunities the HE students experience within the building industry, which have also included a loft/garage conversion, alterations to the building fabric, u-value calculations and material recommendations based on their thermal conductivity.
The care, attention and time both Jason and Jacob put into this for me made the whole process a lot less stressful…”
CHRISTMAS IS COMING! 25 RESTAURANT IS OPEN FOR BOOKINGS!
The chosen piece ‘Grotesque Women’ by Vittoria Vilela Cogorno was inspired by the late John Berger’s book Ways of Seeing, particularly the objectification of the female form in art.
All the work can be viewed at The Royal Academy website

SHUTTLEWORTH COLLEGE NEWS OUTDOOR ADVENTURE STUDENTS TAKE TO THE WATER WITH CHAMPION WAKEBOARDER
STUDENT MARSHALS AT THE MIXED CARP CUPS FINAL The Mixed Carp Cups Southern Final took place at the end of September and Fisheries students were invited along to the event to help marshal.
Level 3 Outdoor Adventure students spent a day in the company of current Masters National Champion female Wakeboarder, Lex Balladon on Monday 16 October.
Part of the British Carp Cups, 40 competitors took part and the students were responsible for weighing and verifying the catches and running the scoreboard.
They enjoyed two hours out on the water at Box End Park, Kempston, trying their hand at wakeboarding and kneeboarding before sitting down for a chat with Lex.
Shuttleworth College also sponsored the event, along with BT Sport, Fosters Birmingham and Reuben Heaton. Lewie Cooper, Fisheries & Fish Management Lecturer, said: “The event tied in nicely with the Angling Event Unit for our Level 3 first and second year students. It gave them insight into how events are planned on a commercial scale and an opportunity to network with people in the industry.”
Lex is an ambassador for the sport and talked the students through how she got into the world of wakeboarding. “This was a great opportunity for the students and they did really well out on the water,” said Outdoor Adventure Lecturer, Sam Bates. “It’s good for them to hear about how to get into the competitive world.”
THE BEDFORD SIXTH FORM NEWS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS The Bedford Sixth Form have been busy getting involved in new projects and schemes to open up more opportunities for students. They have joined the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and already have interest from students wishing to attempt the award at all levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold). This is an extraordinary opportunity to do something that challenges them, helps towards a university place and is highly employable.

They are also involved with the Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS), to participate in a national project being run this year to map the genome of the whipworm (an intestinal parasite common in underdeveloped countries) with a view to being able to control its numbers and spread. The research projects for students will help further “their interest and enjoyment of science”.
EXCEPTIONAL A-LEVEL RESULTS
There were celebrations galore at the end of the summer as A-Level results at The Bedford Sixth Form saw an exceptional increase, despite so much recent A-Level reform. Ian Pryce said: “Our students have never worked harder, and our staff under new Head Paul Clarkson have never performed better. " Well done everyone!
TRESHAM COLLEGE NEWS ANOTHER GOLD MEDAL FOR HEAD OF HEALTH, CARE AND ACCESS
MUSIC STUDENTS GO OUT WITH A BANG! If you’re planning on heading to the annual Fireworks Display at Wicksteed Park, Kettering on Saturday 4 November, you can also look forward to a four song set by our very own HND Music students who have been selected to entertain the crowds on the night! InLimbo have been gigging in Kettering for a year, whilst studying music at Tresham. “This is a great opportunity for them to put their talent to the test in front of such a huge audience, I know they will make us proud,” said Tresham Music Lecturer Dr Cathy Grice. In addition, the college is supporting the event with back stage expertise in the form of music technicians and media students filming the whole event. Another band, The Later Days, also made up of Tresham students will be warming up ready for the headline act. Gates open at 5pm and there will also be a fun fair to keep you entertained!
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! NEW TV STUDIO BRINGS NEW OPPORTUNITIES
PUBLIC SERVICES STUDENTS RESPOND TO EMERGENCY EXERCISE Level 3 Uniformed Public Services students took part in Exercise Kruger during October. Exercise Kruger is a county level emergency exercise to check the working practices of the emergency services, council and volunteer sectors. The exercise was based on a scenario of 24 Army Cadets undertaking an expedition for their Duke of Edinburgh Award but getting caught up in severe weather overnight.
Outside of work here at the College, Sarah Nolan, Head of Health, Care and Access at Tresham College, has another exciting role. She is coach to Paralympic Boccia champion, David Smith, and the team have just enjoyed further success with David taking the BC1 category title on the final day of the Boccia World Open in Kansas City. Boccia is one of three Paralympic sports specifically invented for athletes with disabilities. David also won BC1 gold at the Paralympics in Rio last September. Sarah said: “This was David’s first chance since the Paralympics in Rio to meet all his top rivals in one competition to check out how well everyone is dealing with the new ball testing. David totally dominated, proving his authority. It was a real pleasure working with him as he has developed into a professional Boccia player performing at his best.”
The students were involved in helping to test new processes for spontaneous volunteers, which is particularly important as incidents are now often broadcast on social media and the public services have seen a rise in the number of people attending an incident to help. The students also took part in role plays acting as the families of the missing cadets and as casualties or conducting searches for the missing.
Media and Film Production students at the Kettering Campus have been getting to grips with their new £70,000 TV studio and control room! The new equipment has been tailor made by international specialists, Blackmagic Design, to work as a teaching tool. It will help students develop their editing, sound
recording and camera operation skills. Head of Arts, Guy Newton said: “This is a fantastic new facility, enabling our students to work with the very latest technology... There is a portable production system as well, which means our students can go out on location taking advantage of some exciting new work experience opportunities.”

SPOTLIGHT ON... MARKETING WHAT ROLE DOES EACH TEAM MEMBER HAVE? SARAH BAXTER Director of Sales & Marketing, The Bedford College Group SUE TITMUSS Head of Marketing, The Bedford College Group TRUDIE TEBBUTT Executive Assistant, The Bedford College Group KATIE FEATHERSTONE Research Executive, The Bedford College Group
WHAT DOES YOUR DEPARTMENT DO? Our main role is to support the achievement of college student recruitment targets through attractive marketing campaigns. We provide market research, customer insight, competitor analysis and labour market information to support curriculum planning and new course development. You will have seen the team setting up for events such as open days, the College’s Achievement Ceremony/Annual Awards and attending community events such ‘Think Big’ to raise awareness. We spend a lot of time working on the College’s key publications such as newsletters and prospectuses as a team and we manage the College’s websites, online presence and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The team works closely with our PR Consultant, Jacquie Manners, to manage the reputation of the College through the media and our branding. Our internal communications such as the staff intranet and Connect magazine allow us to keep in touch with everyone in the College and make sure you are all up-to-date.
WHERE ARE YOU BASED? The team is split across Bedford and Tresham but we hot desk at all of our brand sites. We also work with a number of external partners including Jacquie Manners (PR), Sarah Hyde (Copywriting) and Pippa Debort (Research).
WHAT CHALLENGES WILL YOU BE FACING THIS YEAR? As with most departments we are facing reduced financial resources and an increasing need to promote our courses. Some courses are more popular than others but we work hard to promote all areas of the College with the resources we have. We try to come up with creative ideas in which to promote the College – such as our giant inflatable unicorn and giant deckchairs you may have seen at the ‘Think Big’ events which we used to promote the merger.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENTS DID THE TEAM ACCOMPLISH LAST YEAR? Last year we were successful at the College Marketing Awards, winning a Highly Commended for the Sixth Form campaign at the FE First Awards. Shuttleworth College and The Bedford Sixth Form also had more students enrol than ever before! This year we have been nominated for the Marketing Event of the Year for our Hanger 1 event to promote the new Advanced Engineering Centre.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK IN YOUR DEPARTMENT? It is great fun. We work hard but we normally have a smile on our faces while we do it. The team pulls together really well and no day is ever the same!
