We offer a range of higher education qualifications – here’s what they are and what makes them different… BTEC Higher National Certificates/Diplomas (HNCs/HNDs) What are they? These higher education qualifications have a real focus on industry skills and are valued by employers as a recognised alternative to university. HNCs and HNDs are mainly assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course – not through exams – and they’re designed to lead straight to a career in industry or on to further study at university.
How long do they take? HNCs take between one and two years to complete depending on the study route you choose to take, and are generally equivalent to the first year of a full Bachelor’s degree at university. You can continue your studies at Bedford College by moving on to the HND qualification after your HNC. HNDs represent the next level of study up from HNCs, taking an additional one to two years to complete depending on the study route you choose to take. They’re generally equivalent to the second year of university and you can ‘top-up’ your HND with a further one or two years of study at university to convert it to a full Bachelor’s degree. Alternatively a HND is a standalone, recognised qualification that prepares you to progress directly into employment.

Foundation Degrees (FdA/FdSc)
Teaching qualifications
What are they?
What are they?
Foundation Degrees are higher education qualifications that have been developed with employers to develop your practical skills in a specific industry sector. They’re assessed through project work, reports, exams, practical work and presentations.
We offer Certificate of Education (Cert Ed) and Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualifications that are designed to build your teaching skills if you’re looking to begin or develop your career within post-compulsory education. We also offer University Diplomas in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) across a range of teaching skill areas which may be taken as building blocks towards a full Bachelor’s degree qualification.
How long do they take? A Foundation Degree takes two to four years to complete depending on the study route you choose to take. It’s equivalent to the first two years of a full Bachelor’s degree and, just like HNDs, you’ll have the option to ‘top-up’ your Foundation Degree and convert it in to a full Bachelor’s degree through an additional year of study at university.
Art & Design BTEC Foundation Diploma (Pre-Degree)
Our Cert Ed and PGCE courses take one to two years to complete depending on the study route you choose to take. Each of our CPD University Diplomas is offered on a part-time basis via classroom learning, distance learning or through a combination of both, and take one year to complete.
Access to University courses
What is it? This course is designed to prepare students wishing to enter higher education within the field of Art and Design. It’s a widely recognised pathway to further art and design study that aims to give you further knowledge of a range disciplines so that you can choose where to specialise. The course is often required by many colleges and universities for entry on to art and design-related higher education courses.
How long does it take? The Art & Design Foundation Diploma takes one year to complete. Find out more about this course on page 25.

Gaining my Foundation Degree has helped me enormously in starting my career – I’m currently employed at an animal farm, where I look after their animals and provide educational talks and advice to schools and the public. As part of the course I enjoyed the practical involvement we had at the Animal Centre on campus, and because the tutors have great experience in the field they were a huge help along the way. Every time I see work from Bedford College… it’s hard to believe it’s only a two year course. A lot of the bigger-name colleges could learn from their way of doing things.” Gary Cooke Creative Partner, Feelgood Agency
“For me, out of all of the New Blood stands, Bedford College’s was the most ‘on-trend’ with the industry. It was great to see that the students were covering all bases: print, digital, mobile, interaction etc and were physically making things and experimenting – which is exactly what we’re seeing in the industry.” Steph Burningham Mobile Designer, Jam
“I was really impressed with the level of polish, humour and standard of engaging design from Bedford College. The students’ design calibre and style really caught my attention – there was so much desirable skill and talent in a small area.”

Construction
Case study...
Unlike some of the courses on offer at other colleges I looked at, the Foundation Degree at Bedford College focused on sustainable construction and also promised to evolve with further developments in this area – so I knew I would be at the cutting edge of the industry. I took the course on a part-time basis as I was already working, and the knowledge I gained has helped me to achieve promotion to a project officer role in my job, where I organise the installation of around 300 heating systems per year, including renewable technologies. Case study...
Compared to a degree, taking the HND meant I wouldn’t have as much debt, and there’s also no pressure of exams – all the assessments are coursework-based. The course offered the chance to tackle real engineering problems using the College’s excellent facilities and equipment. Case study... Linda Okonkwo, Hospitality Management BTEC HND
“
My teachers are fantastic and in particular my personal tutor is really amazing. She’s always trying to bring out the best in me, giving me continual feedback and advice so that I can improve and do better all the time. On the course, I’ve particularly enjoyed the developing manager units that we studied last year and I found it very interesting to assess my own management style – it’s somewhere between democratic and autocratic! This is such useful insight that I can apply to my job now and in the future. Read more from Linda online at www.bedford.ac.uk/highereducation

Case study...
After graduating from the Birmingham School of Acting, I decided that I wanted to go into teaching. I chose Bedford College because I had studied performing arts there a few years ago and I had an amazing time. During the course I spend one day a week teaching and I enjoy designing my own modules and putting my own twist on lessons. The course is accredited by the University of Bedfordshire so although I’m taught at the College I will graduate with a University postgraduate degree. Case study...
I can honestly say that Bedford College has changed my life. Before I started College I was very shy and I never put my hand up in a class. Now I’ve got a lot more confidence, I’m more enthusiastic and I regularly volunteer and participate in discussions. Now I’m going to Northampton University to top-up my HND to a full degree and I can’t wait. Hopefully this should help me move another step closer to my dream job in terminal management at Heathrow Airport. Read more from Sumandeep online at www.bedford.ac.uk/highereducation

How to apply Found your perfect course? Just follow these simple steps to apply...
1. Research your course
3. Check your application route
Read all about your course in this prospectus and find the one that’s right for you. Remember, you can also discover more about our courses online, including the latest fees, at www.bedford.ac.uk/highereducation
In the listing for your course you’ll see different ways to apply depending on the study route you choose. Here’s an explanation of the two application methods:
3.1 UCAS applications
3.2 Direct applications
2. Attend an open day
You’ll need to apply through the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) online application process at www.ucas.com
Experience more and discover Bedford College at our special higher education open day on 9 October 2013. You’ll be able to chat to students, meet course tutors and check out our facilities. Full details can be found online www.bedford.ac.uk/events
UCAS applications require you to provide a unique code to identify which course you are applying for and which education institution it’s being offered at – don’t worry; the codes you need to use in your application are shown in the individual course entries.
If your course says ‘direct application’ you will need to apply directly to Bedford College. To apply online just find your course through www.bedford.ac.uk/highereducation and click the ‘Apply’ button on the course you are interested in. Applications open from May 2014 – you can register for an alert online to be notified as soon as applications open.
When applying for a course you must meet the entry requirements – these may include certain subjects and/or grades you need to have already gained, as well as a minimum ‘points total’ that is based on the UCAS tariff. The UCAS tariff converts different qualifications and grades into equivalent point values (e.g. an A grade at A-Level is worth 120 points, a B grade is worth 100 points and so on) – to find out what your existing qualifications are worth, just use the tariff table online at www.ucas.com
After registering (or logging in if you’ve previously registered) all you have to do is complete a short form and press ‘submit’ to send us your application. You can also complete a paper application form and post it to us for free – download a copy at www.bedford.ac.uk/downloads or request one by calling us on 01234 291000.
Deadlines You should aim to submit your application to UCAS by 15 January 2014, although you can apply for our Art & Design courses up to 24 March 2014. We can take applications received through UCAS up to 30 June 2014 if there are still vacancies on your course – but we advise earlier applications.

4. Attend an interview For some of our courses, after you apply you’ll need to attend an interview with one of our tutors who’ll be able to ensure that the course you’ve chosen is right for you, as well as answer any questions you may have. You’ll then be notified of the outcome of your application either by the College (for direct applications) or through UCAS (for UCAS applications). The notification will explain to you what you need to do next if you have been offered a place on your course.
5. Come along to an applicant day Once you’ve received an offer for a place on your chosen course, take the next step by attending one of our new applicant days – they’re a great opportunity to experience what studying with us really feels like. We’ll invite you along before your course starts and you’ll get the chance to meet your tutors, make friends with students who’ve also applied for your course and find out a lot more about what you’ll be studying in the coming year – so that by the time your course begins you’ll know exactly what to expect.
