UNIVERSITY PROGRESSION and the UCAS process APPLYING FOR DEGREE-LEVEL education at Bedford College Just like applying to university, entry requirements for courses here at Bedford College will include certain subjects and/ or grades you need to have already gained, and some will also state a minimum ‘points total’ that is based on the UCAS tariff. The UCAS tariff converts different qualifications and grades into equivalent point values. For all courses starting in September/October 2017, the new UCAS points will apply. How long does it take?

What are they?

Foundation Degrees

The Engineering BSc (top-up) takes one year to complete. Find out more about this course on page 36.

(HNCs/HNDs)

These higher education qualifications focus on industry skills and are valued by employers as an alternative to university. HNCs and HNDs are mainly assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course – not usually through exams. They’re designed to lead straight to a career in industry or on to further study at university.

How long do they take?

HNCs take between one and two years to complete depending on the study route you choose, and are generally equivalent to the first year of a full honours degree at university. You can continue your studies at Bedford College by moving on to the HND qualification after your HNC. HNDs represent the next level of study up from HNCs, taking an additional one to two years to complete depending on the study route you choose. They are generally equivalent to the second year of university and you can ‘top-up’ your HND with a further one or two years of study at university to convert it to a full honours degree. Alternatively a HND is a standalone, recognised qualification that prepares you to progress directly into employment.

Engineering BSc

(top-up from HND) What is it?

Run in partnership with The University of Northampton this course enables those who have graduated with an HND in Engineering to top-up to achieve a degree qualification in Engineering without the need to take a full three or four year degree programme. On this course you will study the first semester at Bedford College, followed by the second semester at The University of Northampton.

What are they?

Foundation Degrees are higher education qualifications that have been developed with employers to advance your skills in a specific industry sector. They are assessed through project work, reports, exams, practical work and presentations.

How long do they take?

A Foundation Degree takes two to four years to complete depending on the study route you choose. It is equivalent to the first two years of a full honours degree and, just like HNDs, you will have the option to ‘top-up’ your Foundation Degree and convert it into a full honours degree through an additional year of study at university.

Art & Design BTEC Foundation Diploma

What are they?

We offer Certificate of Education (Cert Ed) and Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualifications that are designed to build your teaching skills if you’re looking to begin or develop your career within post-compulsory education. We also offer University Certificates in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) across a range of teaching skill areas which may be taken as building blocks towards a full Bachelor’s degree qualification.

How long do they take?

Our Cert Ed and PGCE courses take one to two years to complete depending on the study route you choose. Each of our CPD University Certificates is offered on a part-time basis via classroom learning, distance learning or through a combination of both, and take one year to complete. Access to Higher Education courses What are they?

(Pre-Degree) What is it?

This course is designed to prepare students wishing to enter higher education within the field of art and design. It’s a widely recognised pathway that aims to give you further knowledge of a range of disciplines so that you can choose where to specialise. The course is often required by many colleges and universities for entry on to art and design-related higher education courses.

How long does it take?

These courses are designed to provide a route to higher education if you don’t have the right qualifications or experience to start a degree. Access courses aim to introduce you to a subject area, develop your study skills and build your confidence and ability with higher education study. Access courses are recognised by universities across the UK and allow entry on to higher education programmes at Bedford College and beyond.

Loans and bursaries to help pay for your Access course If you are aged 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification, your course will be free for you to study. If you are aged 19-23 and already hold a level 3 qualification, such as A-Levels or a BTEC diploma, or if you are aged 24 or over, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your tuition fees. possible through an allocated personal tutor. You will also be taught by subject specialist staff with industry experience.

University links

We have close links with local universities including the University of Bedfordshire and we liaise with them directly about the entry criteria for applicants and the interview process. Each year, we organise a specific Access Open Day with the University of Bedfordshire so you have the chance to ask the lecturers questions and meet with Access students studying there. In addition, we hope to hold a ‘graduation day’ at the University’s Bedford campus to celebrate student success at the end of the year.

Entry requirements

Access courses are one year, intensive courses aimed at mature students (19+) who do not have the standard qualifications to enter higher education. GCSE English and maths are desirable; however, we may consider candidates without these qualifications, depending on an English and maths entry test, where you will need to demonstrate English and maths skills at Level 2, in addition to interviewing successfully. It is very important to research the entry criteria of the universities you would eventually like to apply to. You will often need a minimum of GCSE English and maths, in addition to your Access qualification, for entry on to degree-level courses. We currently offer GCSE part-time courses, which you can enrol on alongside your Access course to gain these qualifications. Some university courses can be competitive and it’s important to understand the entry requirements prior to applying.

Assessment methods

We use a range of methods to help you achieve the targets needed to pass the course, including in-class assessments, assignments, individual presentations and an independent research project.

RITA’S STORY ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION COMBINED SCIENCE

I work part-time as an agency carer but I’ve always wanted to go to university to study pharmacy, which would enable me to give patients better treatment and make their lives more comfortable. I really enjoyed chemistry, mathematics and the science practical exercises, and conducting experiments was very interesting. For example in biology we checked the catalyst reaction on human tissue from the heart, lungs and kidneys and in chemistry we did experiments which assessed the synthesis of aspirin. I also think the research work we did is going to be invaluable when I get to university. Now I know how to research and reference correctly, which is very important at university and not something that is always taught at A-Level. My tutors have been brilliant. When I decided to apply for a pharmacy course at university, I realised I needed to do chemistry and even though I was a little bit late, they helped me to catch up and complete the extra units that I needed. I’ve applied to do pharmacy at the University of Hertfordshire, so I hope I can impress them with everything that I’ve learned on this course!

You will gain practical skills on our College farm combined with advanced scientific, technical and business enterprise skills which are key components of the course. You will have the opportunity to take additional industry recognised qualifications in first aid, the safe use of pesticides and forklift handling, although additional registration fees may apply for these.

Further study/career prospects You can go on to study at the University of Bedfordshire for a final year to gain a Bachelor of Science Degree. The qualification will provide you with access into employment in the industry or further progression to other higher education institutes.

Recent visits include the animal collections at Whipsnade Zoo and Woburn Safari Park. Study tours have included Berger Zoo in Holland and visits to animal collections in Barcelona.

On successful completion of this course you can progress on to a third year top-up course with the University of Bedfordshire to achieve a BSc in Animal Science. You could also progress to employment in a relevant field: recent graduates have obtained employment at zoos and animal parks, in animal and medical research, in administration and in the teaching of animal related subjects.

ANIMAL SCIENCES

HOLLY’S STORY ANIMAL MANAGEMENT

FOUNDATION DEGREE (FdSc) I progressed directly from the Level 3 course at Shuttleworth College to the Animal Management Foundation Degree. Originally I hadn’t intended to go on to higher education, but I enjoyed the Level 3 course so much and in particular loved working with the animals in the College’s Animal Unit, which is such a unique facility. I really bonded with the animals, so it made it very difficult to leave! As I expected, the higher education course was quite intense but I was also given some fantastic opportunities. For example, as part of the ecology unit in my first year, I had the chance to go to Hungary for 10 days to meet with fish farm experts and representatives from across the EU. Also, as part of the degree, I spent some time volunteering at Wrigglies Exotic Pets in Biggleswade which led to me being offered a part-time job as an Exotic Livestock Technician. So now I get paid to work with cobras, rattlesnakes and large alligators! My plan is to top-up my degree by completing a BSc Animal Behaviour & Welfare course and then I may even go on to do a Masters. I see my future in the animal management industry and that’s partly because of the great experience I’ve had at Shuttleworth College.

Our students recently visited Morgan Davies Bridal in London and worked with a local Sue Ryder shop to reconstruct garments using a range of techniques.

Six design awards were won by our HND Graphic Design students in the YCN 2015 European Design competition. Of all the colleges and universities that entered, Bedford College had the second highest number of winning entries with an equally impressive success rate of 50 per cent. 14 of our students worked within teams on live briefs set by Santander, Syfy, Save the Children and Topdeck Travel. Each student received an award at a ceremony held at the Barbican, London.

GYORGYI’S STORY HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT BTEC HNC

I started at Level 1, and then went on to Level 2 and Level 3, before progressing on to this higher education course. My family are involved in the hospitality industry, but I wanted to learn the theory and understand how the UK sector works. I have also been fitting my studies around my family commitments so the College has been absolutely fantastic for me because it’s local. I looked into similar courses run by local universities but one of the main reasons why I chose Bedford College was because it was much cheaper. My tutors also told me about the Advanced Learner Loan which has really helped me. The most interesting part of the course has been learning about management theory and marketing. I also enjoy the finance part of the course, which surprised me as I’m not keen on the money side of things! My teacher is very dedicated and has a lot of industry experience. To be honest, she’s been a role model for me and she’s helped me to develop my sector knowledge, English language and academic skills. I’ve just started a small cake decorating business and, if I can expand this and get funding, my aim is to open a shop in a few years. I’ve also recently applied for a part-time job as a team leader in a local school. This course has given me the self-belief and confidence that I needed to apply. I’m looking forward to coming back next year to complete the HND at Level 5 as I really enjoy learning and studying here.

AT THE BBC

I am a Freelance Director currently working in factual television at the BBC on consumer programmes such as Watchdog and Your Money Their Tricks. After my course I worked at BBC Three Counties Radio as a Broadcast Assistant which helped me to build up my journalism experience. During this time I did a total of nine weeks of unpaid work experience with BBC television, eventually being offered a researcher contract on Escape to The Country.

AMY’S STORY FREELANCE DIRECTOR

At the moment I’m working on Watchdog as a Director which involves directing short five minute films that will run within the main programme. I’m given the stories by the producers then have to come up with some creative ideas about how to tell the story, interview experts and also make sure that the piece was legally viable. We’ve been filming for the last week, but when we actually film with the presenter we will only have one day and one camera man, so we won’t have any room for mistakes as it’s straight to edit the next day. Editing is actually my favourite part of the whole process. The Media course at Bedford College enabled me to develop many of the skills that I still use today. It was practical and we gained hands-on experience with cameras and editing software. We also created a mini feature film where everyone in the whole class had different roles which gave me insight into what’s expected of you in the workplace. We were also given the responsibility to create our own individual pieces and were encouraged to be as creative as possible. There’s no doubt that my time at Bedford College was a brilliant experience.

MEHOOL’S STORY MUSIC TECHNOLOGY Coming from a musical background and with a passion for playing Indian percussion instruments, studying music was an obvious choice for Mehool. He studied Level 2 and Level 3 Music Technology at Bedford College after leaving school and then moved on to the Foundation Degree. “I looked at going to sixth form after my GCSEs, but the facilities at Bedford College were so much better than anywhere else locally. The tutors were very helpful and pushed you to do your best, even though I had to adjust from using Windows to Apple with the College’s industry standard equipment!”. Mehool not only learnt all the theory and practical skills during his time at College, he also discovered his ‘signature’ sound while working on his major project. “We had to produce our own album from scratch, which allowed us to be very creative. Mine was called ‘East Meets West’ and is a blend of Indian heritage and Hip Hop, Dance and House styles. I also really enjoyed the music and media unit, which is all about composing music for commercial purposes such as TV adverts”. Mehool is already working with some artists under a small record label and his next steps are to top-up his qualification to a full degree at the University of West London and eventually become a record producer.

This is the only college locally to offer the intensive PGCE course, which enables you to gain the qualification in a year. Initially I had planned to do the course part-time but because this intensive course is full-time I actually ended up leaving my job so that I could get my qualification as quickly as possible. I enjoyed the practical side of the course, teaching the students, because I was able to put into practice the theory that I learned in class such as lesson planning, different teaching styles and marking. I feel very lucky that I was surrounded by a great team of teaching professionals including my tutors and my mentor who gave me a lot of advice. Assessment methods

Assessment on the course is via a system of credits. ADAM’S STORY TRAVEL & TOURISM BTEC HND I love travelling, discovering different cultures, learning new languages and meeting new people so the travel and tourism industry has always appealed to me. I had already completed the Level 3 course but wanted to study the subject in more depth at Levels 4 and 5 so there would be more job opportunities available to me. I looked at university options, but the cost was a big factor. It was much more expensive at university – the College course was nearly half the price, so I decided it was more cost effective to stay at Bedford College and gain my higher education qualification that way. I love the fact that it’s all coursework and there are no exams. It’s all assignment based for each unit and, if you fail, you get feedback and advice about how to improve and you have a chance to do it again. This process is much better for my learning style as I can learn from my mistakes. My organisational skills have improved dramatically because I have to plan my time well to ensure I meet all my coursework deadlines. I’ve also gained a lot more confidence when giving presentations. Overall, the course has been really good, I’ve learnt a lot, the teachers have been very helpful and it’s been a great place to learn.

You’ll then be notified of the outcome of your application either by the College (for direct applications) or through UCAS (for UCAS applications). The notification will explain to you what you need to do next if you have been offered a place on your course.

6. Come to our HE Welcome Day – September 2017

Our HE Welcome Day gives you the chance to meet your tutors, make friends with students who’ve also applied for your course and find out a lot more about what you’ll be studying in the coming year so, by the time your course begins, you’ll know exactly what to expect.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You should aim to submit your application to UCAS by 15 January 2017, although you can apply for our Art & Design courses up to 24 March 2017. We can take applications received through UCAS up to 30 June 2017 if there are still vacancies on your course – but we advise you to apply earlier.

As part of our initial advice and guidance, interview and enrolment procedures, we will take into account the experience and knowledge you have gained from outside the formal education and training system. Consequently, we are open to accepting a wide range of evidence sources for RPL provided that the following applies. Any evidence provided should be:

• Current – how recent the experience is can be a factor in its relevance • Authentic – some evidence may require endorsement from third parties • Relevant – the requirements of a particular qualification will act as a determining factor in identifying a suitable evidence base.
