ANIMALS
If you love animals we offer a range of fun, short courses to help you get to know creatures great and small a little better...
1 2 3 THE UK’S MOST POPULAR PETS
1st Place: Dogs 2nd Place: Cats 3rd Place: Fish
DID YOU KNOW – although the
estimated 20-25 million fish owned by UK pet lovers more than outnumbers the 8 million dogs and 8 million cats kept as pets, only 10% of households actually keep fish. Taking home first prize is ‘man’s best friend’, with 23% of UK households owning at least one dog, followed by cats in second place with 19%*. * PFMA Research conducted 2010-2012
KEEPING FISH – TOP FIVE TIPS With their hypnotic beauty and bright colours, tropical fish are one of the best stress busters around, and the art of creating the right environment for your fish to flourish in is a rewarding challenge that anyone can enjoy. If you’re new to keeping fish or thinking of giving it a try, follow these five basic rules and you’ll never look back… 1 Don’t over feed your fish – a buildup of too much food can make fish ill and make your tank look dirty.
2 Maintain small but often – regular ‘low-level’ maintenance of your tank is much better than an occasional ‘deep clean’, which can disrupt the environment.
5 Enjoy your aquarium – don’t forget to take time to enjoy your efforts; creating a thriving tropical fish environment is a challenge, and one worth enjoying.
3 Build the right environment – remember to focus on the visual look of your tank, with the right ornaments, rocks and plants all helping fish to remain healthy. 4 Know your fish – make sure you research the behaviour of the kinds of fish you like, some are incompatible and won’t work together.

GIVE IT YOUR BEST SHOT... Want to improve your photo technique? Here are three quick tips you can follow to make sure you shoot like a pro, and find out why taking a great photo is more than just point and click. Try one of these tips, or all three, and see the difference in your photos. Happy clicking!
The rule of thirds Divide your frame into thirds using a three by three grid of nine equal squares or rectangles – by placing the main element of your image (for example your subject’s face, a building etc.) along one of the vertical lines, you’ll achieve a more interesting composition in your photo.
DON’T JUST WEAR THE LATEST TRENDS... ...design your own (and save money too!) Getting started with fashion design is easier than you think, and if you love creating new looks with the latest high street trends then why not try setting your own style by picking up some design skills?
Get the right balance By following the rule of thirds you’ll find that your main element is now off-centre which, depending on what you’re shooting, can leave a slight ‘void’ in the rest of your photo. Placing less important elements in this space can help to provide a balance to your shot.
Change your viewpoint It may sound obvious, but changing the angle of your shot can dramatically change the appearance and composition of your photo – instead of taking the first shot you think of, try moving your position, the angle of camera or even focusing on a different part of your subject. You can end up with something far more interesting. Photo credit: www.photographymad.com

Whether it’s customising high street fashion with your own unique twist or reworking a tired old item to give it a new lease of life, the possibilities are endless – and with the latest trends not getting any cheaper, it’s also an easy way to save hundreds of pounds each year!
KIT YOU’LL NEED: A sewing machine A sewing pattern Fabric to make your garment Finishing items like zips and buttons Thread, sewing needles and other accessories.
ART & DESIGN SPACE TO INSPIRE Bedford College’s South Bank Arts Centre is a modern creative hub housing an art gallery, dance studio and theatre plus industry-standard media and music suites alongside TV and recording studios. COMPUTING & IT COURSES
Our range of computing courses offers something for everyone, from getting to know more about everyday Microsoft applications to web design classes – particularly useful if you own a business and want to set up your own online presence.
If you’re interested in web design, you may have spotted some of these features appearing more and more on your favourite websites…
THE WEB GOES MOBILE... We all know how popular smartphones have become in the last five years, and with close to a quarter of all web browsing now on a mobile device* it’s no surprise to see the desktop computer versions of websites and everyday software applications taking more and more cues from the world of mobile.
Simple icons On a small screen, you need to get your point across without lots of text. A picture speaks a thousand words and simple icons and images are making their way from mobile to desktop.
Hidden navigation A button with three horizontal lines is increasingly all we need to represent a whole menu of further options – saving space and ‘decluttering’ your site.
Grid layouts The shape of your smartphone or tablet means information needs to organised in a different way – elements are often set out in a grid or ‘modular’ format to make things clearer.

FLORISTRY & GARDENING
These courses allow you to take your passion for flowers, plants and gardening a step further, exploring your creativity and developing your green-fingered skills while meeting like-minded people at the same time.
THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS The meanings behind different kinds of flowers has its origins in the Victorian age, where the manners and traditions of the time meant it was frowned upon to declare your feelings and passions aloud. They developed a range of different meanings in order to send messages through the colour, arrangement and number of flowers in their bouquets. Amaryllis – pride Aster – daintiness Carnation – love or good luck Daffodil – unrequited love Daisy – innocence or purity Forget Me Not – true love Fuchsia – good taste Heather (pink) – good luck Heather (white) – protection Iris – faith or eloquence Lilac – first true love Lily – fertility Orchid – love, beauty, charm Poppy (red) – pleasure Poppy (yellow) – wealth or success Rose (red) – love or passion Rose (white) – innocence or purity Sunflower – pride Violet – modesty
GROW YOUR OWN AND SAVE £1,300 A YEAR! Growing your own food is easier than you think – not only is it a rewarding challenge that can help to keep you fit and healthy, it could drastically cut the costs of your grocery bill, with research* showing that it could slash around £1,300 off your annual shopping costs.

MOTOR VEHICLE
How much do you rely on your car or motorbike? Would you know what to do if something went wrong? Getting to grips with the basics of maintaining your motor vehicle can help you to save money and be safer on the road too.
CAR TERMINOLOGY
Get up to speed with our short guide to some basic car terms...
ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) A system which uses sensors to prevent the car’s wheels ‘locking-up’ and skidding by rapidly releasing and applying the brakes.
BODY
BRAKE PAD
CHASSIS
The car’s body is the shape of the vehicle – the exterior ‘shell’ that gives each car its distinctive look.
When you apply the brakes, a brake pad pushes against a disc attached to your wheel creating friction which slows down your movement.
This is the skeleton of the car to which the body, wheels, engine and other machinery are attached.
09999
CYLINDER Where your car’s fuel is ignited to drive the car – the explosive force pulls a piston downwards in the cylinder which creates the movement that moves the car.
POWER STEERING A steering system that uses a separate motor or engine power to reduce the effort necessary to turn the front wheels.
FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4WD)
HORSEPOWER (HP)
Cars which use the engine to drive all four wheels rather than just two. Often found on offroader vehicles, this gives better grip in slippery conditions.
REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE (RPM) The engine drives the crankshaft which in turn drives the wheels – RPM is used as a measurement to show the speed it is turning.
A measurement to show the power produced by an engine. One horsepower is the power needed to lift a 550-pound weight one foot in one second.
ODOMETER (OR MILEOMETER) An instrument that indicates the number of miles a vehicle has travelled. It is illegal to tamper with the odometer reading.
SPARK PLUG
TRACTION
A component that creates the spark which ignites the fuel to drive the car.
The amount of friction between the tyre and the ground.

PERFORMING ARTS
Based in the modern South Bank Arts Centre at our Cauldwell Street Campus we offer a range of dance and music courses to help fulfil your creative potential!
LOVE TO DANCE? Put on your spandex and strut your stuff to our top five modern movies for dance lovers 1 Flashdance Jennifer Beals goes from welder to dancer in this 80s classic, what a feeling! 2 Dirty Dancing Swayze makes ‘em swoon while “nobody puts ‘Baby’ in the corner.” 3 Saturday Night Fever the ultimate disco movie and who could forget that famous dancefloor pose? 4 Save the Last Dance dance breaks down barriers in this popular high school drama. 5 Step Up full of slick, modern moves, group choreography and high energy routines.
GUITAR BUYER’S GUIDE If you’ve always dreamed of playing guitar but don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place – here’s our simple guide to guitar types to help you work out which one to buy.
What do you want to play? The style of music you see yourself playing will lead you towards the right choice of guitar...
Rock or metal? E.g. Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers or Muse GO FOR ELECTRIC This offers volume and a range of sounds, from crunchy ‘shreds’ to spiky riffs – but remember you’ll also need to buy an amplifier (‘amp’), although there’s world of effects pedals out there to create some really varied sounds. Singer-songwriter or folk? E.g. Damien Rice, Jack Johnson or Bob Dylan GO FOR ACOUSTIC (STEEL STRING) This offers a rich and clear sound, and doesn’t need any additional equipment – just pick up and play! However, better quality can be achieved by spending a little more on your guitar – in other words buy cheap, sound cheap! Classical? E.g. Andrés Segovia, Julien Bream or David Russell GO FOR CLASSICAL (NYLON STRING) This offers a warm and mellow sound, and although its origins lie in the very first guitars invented, the ‘modern’ classical guitar we know today was developed in the 19th century. These guitars are often the cheapest type but are great to start out with.
