OUR CAMPUS

Our campus The Bedford Sixth Form’s stunning campus delivers a unique blend of modern study areas and Victorian architecture, which echoes the excellence of education that has been delivered at the site for over a century. For instance, the new Learning Resources Centre is linked to the wood-panelled original library and the former onsite church has been refurbished as a modern restaurant and classrooms. The grand Victorian Hall is often used for students’ own private study. We think you’ll agree it’s quite a magnificent place to take your learning to another level.

Because water is 800 times denser than air, it’s a great workout!

In a new trip for 2014, students enjoyed first-hand experience of Barcelona’s artists, designers and architecture. One particular location that impressed was the Sagrada Familia; the incredible and very large Roman Catholic Church. One student said: “If this was the only place I visited here in Barcelona, I would still feel lucky to have travelled to see it for myself”. Students filled entire books with sketches and photographs during the trip and reflected their thoughts in their own journals. But it wasn’t all about the art; students sampled tapas at the many restaurants and witnessed incredible views across the city from the terraced area at the top of Park Güell.

yOUR SIxTH fORM CHOICES

Your sixth form choices We offer several course options at The Bedford Sixth Form. Here’s a short guide to our qualifications and what they mean. There are also a number of changes taking place to the way A-Levels work, so make sure you take a look at our overview on page 20.

What to study at the Bedford sixth form When you join The Bedford Sixth Form you will study at Level 3. This is a two-year study programme consisting of two options for you to choose from (see opposite page). For both options, you will need to have achieved the following results in your GCSEs: • 5 GCSEs at A*-C including English. • A GCSE at A*-C or a Level 2 Merit grade in your chosen subject if you have studied it previously. You will also need a GCSE in Mathematics A*-C. If you don’t already have this, you will need to study this alongside your chosen study option. In addition, there may also be special entry requirements for certain subjects – please visit www.bedfordsixthform.ac.uk/courses for the most up-to-date information.

What are a-levels? A-Levels are academic examination-based qualifications at Level 3 offered by schools, sixth forms and colleges. They are recognised as a traditional qualification to gain entry to universities and higher education. A-Levels focus mainly on academic subjects. There are some changes taking place to the qualification from September 2015 - see page 20 for more information. A-Levels qualify for UCAS points (maximum 140 points per A-Level).

What are level 3 technical Diplomas? These assessment-based courses aim to develop specialist skills, enabling you to demonstrate your knowledge throughout the course via coursework, rather than taking exams. The Level 3 Technical qualifications that we offer are either Cambridge Technicals (CTECs) or BTECs, both of which are recognised by universities and employers as a great alternative to A-Levels. One Level 3 Technical Diploma is equivalent to either one A-Level (qualifying for up to 140 UCAS points) or two A-Levels (qualifying for up to 280 UCAS points).

What are level 3 extended Diplomas? This is the perfect route if you want to study one subject area in detail. One Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-Levels and qualifies for UCAS points (maximum 420 points).

What to do if you don’t meet our level 3 entry requirements You can study a selection of GCSE courses (Level 2 programme) at The Bedford Sixth Form in order to gain the qualifications you need to progress on to our Level 3 programme.

What entry requirements apply? At least three GCSEs at A*-C. The subjects you study will depend on the GCSEs you already have – for example if you do not hold English or Mathematics at A*-C, you will be required to take these. See page 22 for the full list of GCSEs that we offer.

A-lEvEl REfORM

A-Level reform in England: An overview of what’s happening and when Currently, whilst AS-Levels can be taken as a standalone qualification, they are generally taken as the first part of an A-Level course. AS-Levels are completed at the end of Year 12 (first year of Sixth Form). A2 exams and coursework are then added to an AS-Level at the end of Year 13 (second year of Sixth Form), bringing it up to A-Level standard.

Old SySTEM

From September 2015, the way A-Levels are made up is changing. A-Levels will still take two years to complete but will no longer be split into AS and A2-Level. AS-Levels will still be offered as a standalone high quality qualification in their own right, taking one year to complete, but will no longer be a means to progressing up to A-Level standard.

nEW SySTEM

how will the changes affect my study?

People tried to convince me to stay at my previous school, but I had a gut feeling when I came to the open day at The Bedford Sixth form – it just felt right, and I revelled at the thought of the freedom being offered. I think it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made – I love studying now and being onsite, whereas before going to school was a chore. I like the fact that all the subjects I’m taking interlink with each other. for example, in film Studies we watched the Invasion of the Body Snatchers and I enjoyed learning about the context of the film, the vietnam War, Watergate and communism. I was also studying communism in History and drama & Theatre, so I was able to get a broad understanding of the topic from a variety of perspectives.

However, a Maths degree in itself is a great investment; graduates can earn £220,000 more on average over their lifetime than someone with just two A-Levels. The course I enjoy most is Business Studies as I have a real interest in this subject and when I’m older I’d like to set up my own business. In particular, I really enjoyed the topic on human resources which covers management, motivating staff and leading teams. The work we have to do is more challenging than at school, but the teachers here are very supportive and have helped to make the transition from gCSEs to A-levels go well. The lessons are really interesting and the teachers get you involved by asking lots of questions. Plus, they are always willing to go over a topic again if you need them to. The Sixth form’s facilities are really good, particularly the gym and swimming pool that we have access to at Trinity Arts & leisure, just next door to the Sixth form. PAREnTS’ gUIdE

Parents’ Guide At The Bedford Sixth Form we realise that parents and guardians play a hugely important part in our students’ academic lives. You are there to help guide them in the decisions they make, and support them throughout their studies. That’s why we've put together this section of our prospectus to show you what The Bedford Sixth Form can offer your son or daughter. how many students progress on to university? In 2013, 81% of our students progressed successfully on to some of the top universities in the country, including Kings College London and the University of York. Source: The Bedford Sixth Form Destinations Survey 2013

We live outside of Bedfordshire. Can my son/daughter still come to the Bedford sixth form? Yes. Unlike the school application process, we do not operate a catchment area, so places at The Bedford Sixth Form are not based on where you live.

Who can my son/daughter turn to when they need help with their studies? All students benefit from their own personal tutor for ongoing one-toone support. For help with subject related questions and queries, their subject tutors will always be on hand to help, making sure your son or daughter gets the help they need to perform at their very best. 40

how will you support my son/daughter in their application to university?

Will my son/daughter have to pay any costs for studying at the Bedford sixth form?

We offer full support with UCAS applications and, as always, our support teams are available to assist with any concerns or problems students may encounter in moving on to higher education. We also make sure there are plenty of opportunities for students to enhance the personal statement section of their UCAS application, through clubs and activities, for example.

If they are aged 16-18 our courses are free for them to study. They will be required to buy course related textbooks and, for a few courses, clothing, specialist equipment and pay towards trips and visits. If your son or daughter is facing a financial hardship we offer financial support including a number of bursaries to help with the costs of study. See page 37 for details.

how will you keep my son/daughter safe?

my son/daughter has always received free school meals. Will they have to pay for their lunches at the Bedford sixth form?

We take the wellbeing and safety of every single student very seriously. We strive to ensure a safe and welcoming environment at The Bedford Sixth Form, and have safeguarding and anti-bullying policies in place to ensure that your son or daughter can study with us in a safe and secure environment. 95% of students feel safe and secure on campus.

Your son/daughter may be able to continue to receive free meals in the restaurant at The Bedford Sixth Form. You can apply for this through our Bursary scheme. See page 37 for more information.

PAREnTS’ gUIdE

my son/daughter’s friends may stay at school for sixth form study – how will they make new friends if they come to the Bedford sixth form? Many of our students have taken the choice to leave their existing school to join The Bedford Sixth Form, so your son or daughter will be able to meet fellow students in the same position. Our positive approach to student involvement, with great clubs, societies and activities, will also ensure your son or daughter meets and gets to work with a wide range of fellow students. Students also meet weekly for group tutorials.

how can i keep up to date with my son/daughter’s progress? We feel students perform better when their parents take an active role in their education, so the Sixth Form holds parents’ consultation evenings and issues written student progress reports.

We recommend you come along to an Open Day with your son/daughter to find out everything you need to know – see the latest dates on page 4.
