OUR 2019 RESULTS “The teachers are very good here, as is the way they teach. They help you to focus on the information you are given and then teach you how to develop it into exam knowledge. Sometimes at school I felt we were given information, but then didn’t know what to do with it. We also have access to good science labs, the Library and plenty of computers for private study.” - MATTHEW A-Levels: Physics, Maths and Chemistry Previous School: Manshead Upper School

You could go on to study subjects such as business, business management, marketing, economics and human resources at university or even move straight in to employment in areas such as business administration. UCAS points available: 168
“I’m enjoying all of my subjects at The Bedford Sixth Form and they work well together. For instance, in Business we have learned about the GDPR rules, which also apply to Law, and about Accounting, which obviously has a maths element to it. One particular area of Business that I am interested in is Marketing and I would like to take this forward to study at university. Consumer behaviour really interests me, which is something we have had a taste of in the first year of the course. I’d like to work in Marketing eventually, or in a managerial position in business.” - KATIE A-Levels: Law, Maths and Business (CamTech) Previous School: Sandy Upper School

RHEANNE’S STORY A-Levels: Chemistry, Biology, Psychology Previous School: Kempston Challenger Academy “I knew I wanted to study science at sixth form. My passion for the subject grew during middle school and I was keen to take it further and understand how different processes work. My favourite thing about Chemistry is learning the background to how things work, such as how molecules react and behave, plus I enjoy studying organic chemistry.
The science equipment is always well prepared for us ahead of lessons and there is a wide range of chemistry books in the Library to enable us to expand our knowledge. Outside of school and sixth form I’ve always had a passion for space, and astronomy has become a hobby of mine. I’m fascinated by the chemistry of how space is built up and whether we could explore further one day. So, after I finish my A-Levels, I’m planning to study either Planetary Science or Geochemistry at university and I’d like a career in Engineering or Aerospace, perhaps even as an Astronomer.”

SHOLA’S STORY A-Levels: Dance, Fine Art, Sociology, English Literature & Language Previous School: St Thomas More Catholic School “I started dancing when I was seven along with my twin sister Jasmine. We learned ballet, contemporary, street and tap and mostly do commercial dance. We’ve done quite a bit of commercial work together, including TV commercials for the Olympics and the 2018 Lidl Christmas advert, and, more recently, modelling for clothing lines. Dance is still my main focus but it wasn’t something offered by my school at A-Level. Studying for an A-Level in Dance is helping me to develop both the practical and theoretical sides and I’m really enjoying it. When I finish sixth form I hope to go on to a Dance School, such as Urdang Academy, Stella Mann or Bird College of Dance & Musical Theatre. My tutor is a great support and will help me choreograph a suitable audition piece. I really enjoy the ‘practitioner copies’ we do in lessons where we have to recreate a particular style. I chose a Bob Fosse style from Broadway and made it into a solo. We have a showcase coming up at the end of the year, which is mostly contemporary style, but we can choose to bring in other styles if we wish.
We study dance theory once a week and have lots of resources available to us. I’m learning so much from other people and have learnt the technical terms of dance, so that I can say what I mean without having to demonstrate it!” T: 01234 291291

All employers are seeking to recruit individuals who can demonstrate key skills such as communication, analysis and creativity. This course helps build these, but also helps to build confidence, alongside presentation skills. Upon completion of this course you could progress on to a higher education course in drama, or a related subject, at either university or drama school depending on the route that you would prefer to take.
Students typically go on to study economics, management, law or other business related courses. EMMA’S STORY A-Levels: Drama, Photography, English Language & Literature Previous School: Wootton Upper School “My interest in drama began at middle school. I’m a naturally dramatic person, so realising that I could use this and make something of it was a revelation! Having a new group of people to work with is fundamental for drama, and this was the attraction for me when I decided to move to The Bedford Sixth Form.
The atmosphere when I first visited felt fresh and new, and I was keen to branch out and embrace the university-style atmosphere that I know will help me to prepare for the step up to university. Once I finish sixth form I am going to take a year or two out to get some more acting experience before applying to drama school. I’m aiming high and am looking at the Central School of Speech & Drama, RADA, Guildhall School of Music & Drama and LAMDA. My tutor is amazing; she puts her time and energy into helping us and always goes the extra mile. She is currently helping me with monologues to apply to the National Youth Theatre. I think the most important thing I have learnt so far is how to become a character and take on a role, through our work into different practitioners and techniques. We have a theatre on campus with lighting and costumes. Our exam performances are open to the public and we also acted in an interactive horror maze last year in the Grand Hall. We got to design everything, from concept to build. There is a good balance of independence and structure at the Sixth Form; we are treated as adults who can have a conversation, but also people who have a lot to learn.” T: 01234 291291

Also, everyone is willing to help you no matter what their role; I have been to the Head before for help with Maths that I had been stuck with!
Outside of lessons I am a Student Ambassador, which means I speak to new students at open days and welcome events, help them find where they are going and answer their questions. I’ve had a bit of a stressful time with A-Levels due to some personal issues, but the Sixth Form has helped me all the way through and has made sure I got the grades I need. PARENTS’ Q&A At The Bedford Sixth Form we realise that parents and guardians play a very important part in our students’ success.
WILL MY CHILD HAVE TO PAY ANY COSTS FOR STUDYING AT THE BEDFORD SIXTH FORM?
You’re there to help guide them in the decisions they make and support them throughout their studies. To help with this process, we’ve answered some of the top questions asked by parents. If you would like to find out more, we have a separate Parents’ Guide that you can download from: www.bedfordsixthform.ac.uk/downloads
If they are aged 16-18, our courses are free for them to study. They will be required to buy course related textbooks and, for a few courses, clothing, specialist equipment and they will need to pay towards trips and visits. If your child is facing a financial hardship we offer financial support to help with the costs of study. See page 53 for details.
HOW MANY STUDENTS PROGRESS AFTER COMPLETING A-LEVELS?
HOW WILL YOU KEEP MY CHILD SAFE?
95% of students went on to positive destinations including apprenticeships, further education, higher education and paid employment in 20181.
HOW WILL YOU SUPPORT MY CHILD IN THEIR APPLICATION TO UNIVERSITY? We offer full support with UCAS applications and, as always, our support teams are available to assist with any concerns or problems students may encounter in moving on to higher education. We also make sure there are plenty of opportunities for students to enhance the personal statement section of their UCAS application through clubs and extracurricular activities, for example. If your child has decided that they do not want to attend university we will support them in achieving their chosen pathway. We will also give impartial guidance if they are also unsure on what to do next. At The Bedford Sixth Form your child will have a dedicated tutor that can support them individually with guidance and queries.

We take the wellbeing and safety of every single student very seriously. We strive to ensure a safe and welcoming environment at The Bedford Sixth Form and have safeguarding and anti-bullying policies in place. Access on to The Bedford Sixth Form site is by ID Card only and our teams regularly check everyone is carrying their ID.
WHO CAN MY CHILD TURN TO WHEN THEY NEED HELP WITH THEIR STUDIES? All students benefit from their own Personal Achievement Tutor for ongoing one-to-one support. For help with subject related questions and queries, their subject tutors will always be on hand to help, making sure your child gets the help they need to perform at their very best.
HOW CAN I KEEP UP TO DATE WITH MY CHILD’S PROGRESS? We feel students perform better when their parents take an active role in their education, so the Sixth Form holds parents’ consultation evenings and issues written student progress reports.
