COLLEGE VERSUS SCHOOL Of course, we think college is great, but we also know that if you’ve never been, you won’t really know what it has to offer. Here is what you can expect.

More subjects to choose from

Your own support team

You’ll be spoilt for choice with new subjects to study at college. Did someone say Engineering? Construction? Hairdressing? Professional Cookery? The possibilities are (almost!) endless!

We mentioned that college is a more mature environment than school, but you also get lots of great support. You’ll have access to our Student Services team who can help with everything from applying to university to paying for your bus pass.

A varied day Most full-time students will have four days a week in college. Outside of timetabled lessons, you will be expected to put in additional study hours, either at home or in our Libraries.

TOTUM CARD

A more independent you From calling teachers by their first name, to deciding how and when you want to study, you’ll find college is a much more mature environment... and you’ll become a more independent person as a result.

New people, new places One of the best things about coming to college is making new friends. You’ll find people who share the same interests as you both in class and outside. Depending on where you live you may also have a whole new town to explore!

Not just a classroom

All of our students are entitled to purchase the Totum Card. These cost £12 and give you great discounts with many local and national retailers, fast food restaurants, cinemas and much more!

Forget the days of learning just from a textbook, now is the time to take your learning to the next level. Depending on your study programme you’ll learn in real life working environments - from working on a building site, to a restaurant or salon.

Top brands include:

A stepping stone into industry

• 20% off at Pizza Hut Restaurants

• 10% off ASOS • 25% off Odeon student priced tickets

Many of the tutors at our College have industry experience, which means they’ve had a career in the area they’re teaching you! From actresses, to hairdressers and ex-professional sports coaches, they’ll be able to answer your questions about future careers and help you to find work experience placements. There are also lots of great opportunities to network with local and national companies at college; from competitions to guest speakers.

STUDENT BAG ESSENTIALS

Do you often get to school and realise you’ve forgotten something important? Or are you fed up of carrying too much to and from home everyday and not using half of what you bring? Whatever your student bag woes, we’re here to help! Check out our list of essentials below. They might not all be relevant to you, but it’s a good place to start. Why not make your own list so you can check everything off before you leave in the morning?

Bus pass

Pencil Case A couple of pens, highlighter, pencil, rubber, ruler and pencil sharpener. If you need other specific equipment for your course, such as a compass, make sure that’s in there too.

Notepad and lesson notes Make sure you have plenty of paper to take notes during classes. Top tip: Take the notes you make out of the notepad every night and file into the relevant folder at home so you don’t lose them.

Textbooks

Again, you’ll need this if you use a bus to get to college. Save some pounds and make sure it’s in the bag!

USB stick These are great to bring work, such as presentations, into college and to save something digitally when you don’t have your laptop with you.

Umbrella Need we say more?!

Water bottle

Remember to check your timetable and take all the books you need for each lesson every day.

Diary/planner You’ll need this to record deadlines for homework, events that are coming up and other important dates such as, dare we say it, exams?!

Thin ring binder or plastic wallet This is to keep any handouts and other sheets of paper you are given safe. Top tip: If your binders are getting heavy, take a small one to college every day with the stuff you’re currently working on and transfer the work to the bigger ones once you get home.

It’s a well known fact that drinking plenty of water helps improve focus and concentration. Top tip: There are water coolers placed all around the college campus, so bring a refillable bottle and stay hydrated!

Snacks We have some great food outlets on campus but if you need to stave off the munchies, a healthy snack such as a cereal bar is easy to eat on the go and will tide you over between meals.

Sunglasses If and when the sun does make an appearance, sunglasses are essential in summer and winter!

Phone

Post-its or page markers These are really handy for making notes during class and saving pages in a textbook.

Not to be used in class of course, but no one wants to forget their phone!

Student ID You need this to gain entry to the campus every day, so don’t forget it! T: 01536 413123 info@tresham.ac.uk www.tresham.ac.uk 5

COPING WITH CHANGE One of the first big changes in our lives often comes when we leave school. It’s everything we’ve ever known for the last 12 years of our lives and suddenly it’s time to move on! Yes, it’s exciting but it can also be quite daunting. Here we share some key points that we hope might help.

Focus on the positives Turning negative thoughts into positive ones can really help to embrace change. Are you worried about leaving your friends who are going to a different college or staying on at sixth form? What about all the new friends you are going to make? And who said you have to lose touch with your old friends? Positive thinking is key!

Look for new opportunities:

Do what you can to make life easier There’s already a lot going on, so the last thing you need is to fall behind on work or not be doing as well as you thought you might. Put some simple measures in place to help yourself out - keep a diary of deadlines, update your to do list regularly and generally stay organised.

Acknowledge that things have changed and it’s a good thing The key thing here is that life moves on. Yes it’s scary at first, but after a few weeks you’ll have settled into your new routine and we bet you’ll be loving college life. It won’t be long before you’ll be looking back wondering why you worried so much!

Remember, our Student Services team are here to help They’re a lovely, friendly bunch and are here to listen to your concerns, so don’t hesitate to go and see them if you need some advice.

College is full of new and exciting opportunities. From joining clubs and societies to going on trips and entering competitions. Getting involved with things, especially in the first term, will keep you busy and focused on all the great stuff that’s still to come.

Eat well and exercise On a similar note, taking care of yourself will really help you to feel better in yourself and therefore more confident to tackle new situations.

STUDENT SNAPSHOT

AIMEE JONES Childcare Level 3

DANIEL GRAHAM Engineering

I’m really proud of the progress I have made so far at College, having worked up through the levels from Level 1 to Level 3.

I want to work in the Navy or Army as an Engineer. I’m interested in marine-based work, for example on the engineering rigs, because I have a love of travelling and this is a job where you have a lot of time away and earn good money.

I met some representatives from Tresham College on GCSE results day and the Childcare courses they were advertising really interested me. The tutors were so supportive and explained what I needed to do from day one. I love the creative side of the course; we have to make our own resources for the activities to carry out on placement, such as phonics cards for literacy and dice for numeracy. I really enjoy the placements twice a week because I like to be out and about. We have a set of things we have to cover on placement. This includes literacy, numeracy, PE and skills in independence. We also have to work with different age groups, so I’ve had experience in a pre-school, baby room and reception class in a primary school. Our final placement is our own choice, so I’ll be choosing a nursery.

I chose to study Engineering at College to help me access a change of career. I decided I wanted to do something different and the engineering industry is booming with lots of different fields to go into. Plus, being able to make things out of nothing is always a good skill to have! My tutors give us really good advice and share both their industry and practical experience with us. I enjoy the theory work, learning about different materials and how to work with them. I find the centre lathes the most interesting equipment to work on. I recently made an engineer hexagon screw to shape material.

DAVID ADABALE Fashion & Textiles

GEMMA MORRIS Hairdressing

I have always loved art and creating things, but also have a strong interest in fashion. I love streetwear and high fashion, and am inspired by designers such as A-COLD-WALL.

I want to be a Hairdresser and have my own salon one day. Coming to College has helped me to work towards this goal because I knew what I wanted out of it from day one.

Studying Fashion at College allows me to experiment with different materials and create something abstract. When I started here I didn’t know how to sew, but now I’m really good at it! I enjoy manipulating fabrics in different ways - such as making origami out of fabric. We get to go out on trips to help with inspiration for briefs. We’ve been to the V&A Museum in London and to the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford; we took our sketchbooks and sketched various things that could inspire our work. My tutors are really supportive and there is more one-to-one support compared to at school. I also have more in common with the other students here, because I am connected to people who are also into fashion.

I work in a salon on Saturdays, which helps me further with my training because the owner shows me how to do different techniques and I get to work on a few of her clients. In College we also have real clients come in to the salon and it’s great to interact with different people. Last year we got to go to Salon International, the UK’s biggest hairdressing event, held in London. My tutors are really good and they teach me what I want to learn. We are assessed throughout the course in colouring, cutting and styling. I have particularly enjoyed the unit on colour correction; it was interesting to find out how you go from a wrong colour to how it is supposed to look.

The best thing about College is that you have free will to create whatever you decide, with all the equipment you need available to you.

JAKE MERALI Electrical

ROXANA SEITAN Business

I have a couple of family members who work in electrical so, having learnt a bit from them, I knew I wanted to train to be an Electrician. This course has taught me a lot and given me enough work experience to feel ready to start my apprenticeship with AR Electrics, an opportunity which came about through the College.

My main interest is in International Business and I have already applied to study this at Aston University. In College we learn how companies operate on an international level, compared to smaller businesses. I’d love to get into a managerial role in a multi-national company and eventually have my own business one day.

I did my work experience at Grove Electrical, who specialise in industrial work. We were working on dewiring machines at a local pasta factory.

I also enjoy studying Accountancy & Finance at College, as well as being the Project Manager for various assignments. A recent one was to raise money for a local charity. I had to assign roles to the team and come up with ideas to raise money, such as a bake sale.

The libraries at College are very good and I use them quite a lot for research. The timetable is a lot more flexible than it was at school and we’re treated as adults here, so it’s all together a much better experience. I’ll now carry on to Level 2 while working for AR Electrics, with one day release from work to study here at College.

Outside of lessons I have been President of the Tresham Students Union (SU). This involved organising events and lunchtime activities from Remembrance Day to the Annual Learner Conference and I was very proud to win an award for my work at last year’s College Achievements’ Ceremony. I’m still involved with the SU but have scaled back my involvement to allow me to focus on my final year.
