CORPORATION NEWS Following our Ofsted inspection the Corporation met earlier this month to consider the provisional outcome. To express their gratitude they have asked that we extend the Christmas closure this year so that the term ends for staff on Friday 20 December with our staff development activity. The college campuses will therefore close on Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 December and you will not have to use your annual leave on those dates. If you have already booked either or both of these days this can be unpicked and leave carried forward into January. I hope you agree this is a proportionate and generous gesture by our governors while not overly inconveniencing our students and employers.

PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE

#LoveOurCollegesWeek

It was great seeing the varied activities put on to showcase the college sector. We definitely did our bit with senior leaders going back to the class; the opening of our Virtual Reality suite at Bedford; an MP visit and a theme tune among other things.

Leap year

Now we have completed our full Ofsted inspection and made a good start to the year we can begin to think how we move forward and develop our next strategic plan. One of our key aims is to produce students who are exceptionally skilled in their subject and to that end we are keen to participate in skills competitions in every area of the College. It is very important that our programmes of study are designed not just to produce very high achievement rates, very high marks/grades, and very strong outcomes, but are also designed to ensure our students develop world class skills in their chosen field. This fits with our priority this year to focus on curriculum design and the student experience. Please think about how we can ensure this happens as we move into the curriculum planning cycle this term. We want to make a big leap forward.

vigilant this year given the very high level of investment (capital expenditure) in our estate at Shuttleworth and Wellingborough.

Progress During our inspection we produced some data to show our focus on progression at Tresham was paying dividends. We have definitely shifted our curriculum centre of gravity upwards with far more students studying at Level 3. We know such a shift benefits the local economy but also benefits individual students in terms of earnings and employment. A great improvement.

Sector news Sadly the eighth year of standstill funding (20%+ real terms cut) is taking its toll on many colleges. The FE Commissioner recently published three reports: Brooklands, Hartlepool and Moulton expressing concern about their finances. In an era where colleges can now become insolvent it shows the extent to which we must be alert to any adverse change in our finances and confront them robustly. We are very fortunate in having a finance team that is very proactive in keeping us financially secure but we must remain

FUTURE FORESTERS AT SHUTTLEWORTH COLLEGE The future is bright for the growing forestry sector – so more than 200 students from across the country heard at a unique Future Foresters Skills Day organised by the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) and hosted at Shuttleworth College. Speakers and exhibitors gathered to reveal the skills students require to land their first job, to help employers optimise advances in technology, to move up the careers ladder or to take advantage of emerging opportunities. RFS Chief Executive Simon Lloyd said: “Forestry is increasingly recognised as a major contributor to climate change mitigation. To grow trees on a scale being planned by the Government as well as adapting our existing woodland to climate change will require a very substantial up-skilling of the forestry sector. We were delighted to see students from nine colleges and two universities, apprentices and young foresters come together to experience some of the latest in technology – from virtual reality chainsaws and forwarders to hands on climbing equipment and tree care. Our thanks to Shuttleworth College for helping make this happen and to exhibitors for inspiring the next generation of those who will be tasked with caring for our woodland.” Shuttleworth College student Celia Woodward is an Arborist Apprentice, studying at the College and working for Treelife Tree Surgeons in Hertfordshire.

Celia was filmed by the RFS on the day about the event and her apprenticeship. She commented: “This event was really helpful, we learned about new developments in root care and ways to prevent disease. I’ve always loved working outdoors and I’d recommend anyone to go for an apprenticeship, you never know what you are capable of.”

Over 100 Bedford businesses have taken part in the Fiver Fest, part of a national project to encourage people to visit town centres.

Led by lecturer Rhiannon Shades, a group of Level 3 students met with businesses across the town centre who were taking part in the promotional activity and created a series of mini movies which were then shared on Facebook.

The videos can be seen on Town Centre Champions – Bedford own Facebook page.

Rhiannon commented: “It was great work experience for our students to work to a brief which is very topical today with all the discussion in the news about town centres.”

NEWS FROM THE BEDFORD COLLEGE GROUP GEORGINA TAKES NORTHANTS Changes at the top of The Bedford College Group see Vice Principal Georgina Ager taking responsibility for Northamptonshire campuses in Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough. Georgina will be forging ahead with plans to raise the standards of education up to and including degree-level learning, or Higher Education, across the whole Group. But with special attention to enhancing successful partnerships such as that with the University of Northamptonshire. She is also looking to link up with business organisations, employers

and local authorities who may want to learn more about the College campuses in Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough. “Great progress is being made across all locations, particularly with the refurbishment of Wellingborough which represents a £10 Million project investment by the Group. “This will mean 1,000 students plus staff pouring into Wellingborough town centre which should be a boost for local businesses.

for all their support so far and look forward to continuing to work closely with them as the local authority scene evolves in the future,” said Georgina. Georgina also has a Group-wide overview of the curriculum in general as well as: The Bedford Sixth Form, Arts, Travel, Business, Hair and Beauty, Hospitality, Care and Childcare, Teacher Education and HE.

“We have been grateful to Wellingborough Borough Council and its leader Cllr Martin Griffiths

T-LEVEL TO NHS APPRENTICESHIP Kettering’s Katie Moreland has her first foot on the ladder of a career in the NHS – thanks to a work placement scheme run by Tresham College as part of a pioneering T-levels project. T-levels are a new Government qualification where young people combine classroom studies with 315 hours in the workplace. For Katie, aged 17, it was so much better than school who said: “With a T-level work placement you were challenged in different ways, treated like an adult and able to respond like one. I didn’t want to be in class, I wanted to be in work and the T-level course helped me gain such useful experience at Kettering General Hospital. Now I have been taken on as an apprentice in the Therapies Clinic and am really enjoying it. My family are really pleased.” Tresham College, has been pioneering the work-placement element of T-levels across Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire over the last year.

Sheila Turner, Head of Learning and Education at KGH Foundation Trust said: “We are looking into taking more young people via the T-level route, particularly in Business Administration but also other areas, as well as expanding our apprenticeship learner pathways.” Julie Hoult, Head of Business Development at Tresham College added: “The KGH Foundation Trust has been incredibly supportive with the T-level pilot and we hope to continue working with them in the future. As a major employer in Kettering, the Trust sets an outstanding example to others about the benefits of T-level work placements. They have cut a path which we hope more will follow.”

He said: “We work very closely with employers across the College, with all our students being encouraged to complete a minimum of 20 hours of work experience during their courses. T-levels are evolving as we speak, and the Group is bringing its expertise to bear in dealing with employers as well the challenges of meeting work-placements hours for students who may have part-time jobs or home life commitments.” The complete work placement and class course T-levels will be run by The Bedford College Group from September 2021.

Leading the T-level project is The Bedford College Group Director, Tony Joyce, who has worked on a wide range of projects where employers were encouraged to “test drive” potential employees before making the commitment of offering them a job.

NEWS FROM THE BEDFORD COLLEGE GROUP VISIT TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS Mark Downing, was invited to the House of Commons by the National Apprenticeship Service to talk about his personal apprenticeship journey from an IT Technician Apprentice to his new role of Course Manager for Commercial IT Courses and Digital Apprenticeships. Mark explains what he did during his visit to the House of Commons. “Whilst there I delivered a speech to more than 25 apprenticeship champions from across the UK to give them ideas on how to enrich their IT programmes and to make it more hands on. Included in the crowd was the director for “Amazing Apprenticeships” a subdivision of the Department for Education (Apprenticeships). I was asked to record a couple of soundbytes for their marketing purposes.

We were also given access to the currently unreleased “ASK Apprenticeships” Campaign, which gives access to resources and promotional materials to help gain interest in the apprenticeship scheme. These will be used heavily during our progression event, our open evenings and during the National Apprenticeship Week in February. Other apprenticeship champions will visit during the progression day to talk about their own experiences on apprenticeships and where our students can progress to. There will be more resources on the way once they get released into the public domain.”

LOVE OUR COLLEGES WEEK 2019 The Bedford College Group helped to fly the flag for Love Our Colleges week with a variety of events. CEO and Principal Ian Pryce CBE, famous for his songs for special occasions, produced the “official” Association of Colleges tune to the Queen song Can Anybody Find Me Somebody to Love replacing ‘somebody’ with ‘A College’. The tune was widely shared on social media and can be seen at www.youtu.be/HukG47M4R0M. Meanwhile back at the Bedford riverside campus, the official opening of the Virtual Reality Suite, based within the Advanced Engineering Centre, was a cause for celebration on the Tuesday.

Costing more than £200,000 thanks to a generous donation by the Connolly Foundation, the suite gives students access to state of the art technology for use across a range of courses including engineering, construction, computing and 3D design. The final day of Love Our Colleges week was celebrated in both counties served by The Bedford College Group. Kettering MP, Philip Hollobone, met with Ian Pryce and Vice Principal Georgina Ager, who runs the Northamptonshire campuses, to discuss the developments at Tresham College, before he went on to visit students from Performing Arts, Media and Applied Sciences in their classrooms.

Finally at the Shuttleworth College campus Vice Principal Em Lowe brushed up on her heavy equipment training to operate a tractor. Em was formerly in the armed forces, has HGV licences and as a civilian drove tankers before turning to teaching. Handling a tractor was a change from the desk work.

Our Fish Management students celebrated Love Our Colleges week with us last week.

To celebrate Love Our Colleges week, we spoke to students and asked them what they love about their local College. To see what other students said take a look on our twitter pages @bedfordcollege, @shuttleworthcol, @TreshamCollege and @thebedfordsixth.

Last week, the official launch of our Virtual Reality Suite was hosted in celebration of Love Our Colleges week. The Virtual Reality Suite was kindly supported by the Connolly Foundation to help enhance our students’ experience.

The launch of our Virtual Reality Suite was a great evening full of tea, coffee and cake with many of our stakeholders and employers in attendance.

Kettering MP, Philip Hollobone visited the Tresham College, Kettering Campus

Vice Principal Em Lowe visited the Mech Centre at Shuttleworth College and took part in a practical machinery lesson.

11–15 November Anti-bullying week

Inter Faith Week aims to strengthen good inter-faith relations, increase awareness of the different faith communities in the UK, in particular celebrating and building on the contribution which their members make to their neighbourhoods and to wider society, and increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious beliefs. https://www.interfaithweek.org/

Everyone has a role to play in preventing and tackling bullying, including identity-based bullying. In your department, do you know who is being bullied and what actions do you take to prevent and tackle bullying? How do you ensure that students report bullying incidents? The 2019 theme is “Change Starts with Us”. Small change. Big difference. Whether it is verbal, physical, online or in-person, bullying has a significant impact on a person’s life. By making small, simple changes, we can break this cycle and create a safe environment for everyone. Change starts with a conversation. It starts with checking in. It starts with working together. https://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org. uk/anti-bullying-week
