A HOLIDAY NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
GRATTITUDE, by famed pop artist, and New York gallery owner and art impresario, Peter Tunney - excerpted from a photo of Monte and Angelina Lipman included in our cover feature on page 82 of this November/ December Holiday Issue of Bedford & New Canaan Magazine - tops our Holiday message. As Tunney explained to B&NC Mag, “My message is meant to be profoundly obvious and obviously profound. GRATTITUDE is about putting the Attitude into Gratitude. More and more these days, we’ve got to be more grateful ...and less hateful.” Tunney’s onto it. We have to change our minds. Rethink old rules. Remember, or figure out, the things that bring us together - in our community, as Americans, and as people - rather than divide. ‘We the people’ must renew our vows to each other. A new ‘Amer I CAN’ way of thinking. And...more GRATTITUDE, less platitude. Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All Others. It’s not just a prayer, it’s a call to action. We have to make it our attitude and do it with GRATTITUDE. In this issue, we feature Neighbors Link, an amazing charity serving the needs of immigrants, and based in Mt. Kisco. We have the autobiography of a Polish American who came to the U.S. alone at 19, put herself through college, and is now living and working in New Canaan. We have a feature on the Taiwanese American Tsengs; titans of industry, noted philanthropists, and New Canaan homeowners six times over, and for a decade...but still immigrants. And we have an essay from Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Shaaray Tefila, David Greenberg, on Tikun Olam, the Jewish call to ‘repair the world’. GRATTITUDE By Peter Tunney
Our magazine is mailed to you - for free. Our hope, and particularly with this Holiday issue, is that every reader will take a moment after each read to think positive, take stock of our community, and consider some act of giving to a local charity or other good cause. As my great-grandfather, a Polish immigrant to the United States, used to say about charitable giving: “It’s not really enough until you feel it.” In the past year, B&NC Mag has featured and supported: Make-A-Wish, Hole In The Wall Gang Camps, The Storm Ice Hockey, Northern Westchester Community Center, Regional Hospice, Ronald McDonald House, The Glass House, the Wolf Conservation Center, LiveGirl, Horizons, The New Canaan Mounted Troop, Endeavor, the BRLA, the Rider’s Closet, Malcolm Pray Achievement Center, Friends of Pound Ridge, the New Canaan Newcomers, Caramoor, Filling in the Blanks, and Bedford 2030. This year, put more attitude into your GRATTITUDE ! Truly yours, CASEY KAPLAN
President

SWEET BY SUE DECHIARA, B&NC Mag Homes Editor

Sweet suite. Sweet success. Sweet life. ...HADASSAH SWEET! This rock n’ roll redo of the basement, garage and backyard of a New Canaan in-town residence is about as sweet as it gets! The just-completed space is filled with epic guitars, including axes used and signed by AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, and the Grateful Dead, among others, and features an autographed Slash hat and a drum head autographed by Guns N’ Roses. Then there’s dramatic modern art, including a piece titled Candy Heart by Brendan Murphy and a mixed-media face of a girl made from punk rock memorabilia by Nemo Jantzen. The sectional and chair are Verellen, the coffee tables are Sonder and the alabaster lantern is from Kelly Wearstler. The gym is equipped with Life Fitness, Hammer Strength, Peloton, Rouge, and Precor. The quartzite bar and glass-walled wine cellar with steel racks and a stone floor are all fabricated from scratch. ...And - oh yeah you noticed! - there’s a classic Porsche behind the glasswalled garage that is now very much inside and a part of the new experience of the room! 24

It’s decidedly
BOLD & INDULGENT. Interesting and interactive. Sensual, sleek and modern. And it’s the work of Hadassah (“Haddie”) Sweet, who moved into the residence with her boyfriend, Robert Sechan, at the beginning of the pandemic. Haddie recounts, “We had to install a 40 foot beam to carry the weight of the garage wall we removed. I designed the wine cellar from raw materials, with special attention to things like the stone floor, and I used Jay Pirrone at 5K Development as the general contractor to ensure the quality of construction and workmanship and because it takes some talent to accomplish custom spec work of this scale. I wanted to turn what was an ordinary basement into the kind of space even 007 would envy. Rob is a classic car guy and really into music, and I’m most interested in art, so I designed the bar, and actually moved windows, to accommodate the large Ellen von Unwerth. She’s a German photographer and I just love the movement in her work and liked the intimate feel of this piece, and the way it recalls the era of prohibition and brings you back in time.”
THE POOL , firepit seating area, and separate TV sitting area with its own fireplace, have the feel of a luxurious and exclusive spa.
Outside, fit comfortably into what was an intownsize smallish area behind the house, the pool, firepit seating area, and separate TV sitting area with its own fireplace, have the feel of a luxurious and exclusive spa. Haddie used Gregory Maroun at Stecks Nursery to help with the landscape design, and the horizontal line of the internally-lit wooden fence combined with the vertical and warming effect of the trees and shrubbery are enough to suggest backyard rather than courtyard. The varied textures of the different woods and stones and all-aluminium plunge pool are integrated seamlessly, yielding a very natural feel to the whole environment. This space is packed with fun for any party, and still perfectly private for the afternoon poolside or the romantic evening under the stars. 26

About her
STYLE,
Sweet comments, “I like to involve the residents in the space I design. I focus on my client’s interests and work their vibe into the design of the space. Sometimes, and in appropriate rooms, I use memorabilia or art to address strong interests - like guitars for Rob. Sometimes, and in particular in some of the work I’ve done in vacation homes, the mission is more to marry the look and feel of the interior to the natural surroundings the client goes to the home to enjoy. And right now I have a client in New Canaan who wants a clean and modern look and, at least so far, we’ve only focused on colors and fabrics and textures and some natural elements to achieve what they want. No matter what the motif, I’m always trying to design a space that’s happy, comfortable, and somehow exciting for the client.” Boss basement. Badass bar. Wicked wine cellar. Ginormous gym. Cool classic car! Perfect pool. Terrific outdoor TV. Fantastic firepit. This place is sweet!

BILLY FORTIN BY Michael Kaplan

There’s no place like home for the holidays. At Meadow Ridge, you’ll find a home filled with warmth, love and togetherness, with services and amenities that allow for a worry-and maintenance-free lifestyle. Elegant apartment homes, fine cuisine, fulfilling activities and a continuum of care are all provided by a dedicated, experienced team.
“I’m not good at talkin’ about myself, and I don’t know how exciting I am”, Billy starts off. With genuine humility, he’s truly uncomfortable being asked to catalogue his lifetime of community service and giving. But the list of Billy’s local achievements, and acknowledgements, is singularly impressive. He is constantly the first person to lend a hand to help someone in need, support a local charity, or back any community endeavor - with, as required, large supplies of food, a fully-staffed BBQ, charity raises aggregating hundreds of thousands of dollars, grocery donations to the food bank at the Westchester Community Center in Katonah, and running the annual Pound Ridge Car Show. He donated the sign for the Pound Ridge Town Park, contributed financially and working as President of the Pound Ridge Business Association to the construction of The Pound Ridge Millennium Clock, the Town Fountain, and Shelly’s Nature Walk at the Pound Ridge Town Park. He’s received numerous honorary awards for community service; including from the Town of Pound Ridge, Pound Ridge Business Association, Pound Ridge Lions Club, Pound Ridge Garden Club, Westchester County ARC, Westchester County Board of Legislators, New York State Assembly, American Legion, and American Cancer Society, among others; in addition to having been named to THE BEDFORD 25 by BEDFORD MAGAZINE in 2016. He’s an Honorary Boy Scout, an Honorary Member of the Pound Ridge Police Benevolent Association, an Associate member of the Pound Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, a member of The Sons of the American Legion, a 30-year member of the Lions Club, and an active Member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He even reads to the children at the Pound Ridge Elementary School. Billy puts it simply, “It’s nice to know people appreciate what I do, but I don’t do it for the recognition. I don’t have any more room for another plaque in my office. I do it because I’m connected to every organization in this community...and most of the people, too!”
You are family at Meadow Ridge—and, like family, we want you to have the best of everything. Live an elevated life at Meadow Ridge.

ou, the B&NC MAG reader, probably already know Billy Fortin. He is the owner/operator of both The Market at Pound Ridge Square and the popular Blind Charlie’s eatery across the street in Scotts Corners, and he’s somewhat ubiquitous in and at every local charity and event. He’s a bit of Horatio Alger, Huck Finn, Jimmy Stewart and Sam Drucker (the character who played the role of the grocery store operator - and that of every other service and tradesman in the country town - in the old TV show Green Acres) all rolled into one real-life version. You want to call him a real ‘regular guy’, but the truth is, he’s exemplary.

THE 46 YEARS BILLY HAS BEEN WORKING AT THE MARKET ARE A MODEL OF HOMETOWN AMERICAN RETAIL BUSINESS SUCCESS.
illy was there feeding local residents, and with a substantial donation, in the Hurricane Sandy aftermath. He again contributed financially and delivered food and supplies to the American Red Cross for Ground Zero relief after 9/11. And, most recently, Billy led the community through the Covid pandemic - staying open throughout, ensuring equitable distribution of scarce goods, offering curbside pick-up and respecting all protocols - and making, with the help of staff and a large group of local volunteers, thousands of grocery deliveries to seniors, handicapped and others in the community who couldn’t get to The Market. Billy comes from hardscrabble beginnings. “I really had no father figure and very little parenting, other than the support of my uncle Lionel, my father’s twin brother, who lived in Pound Ridge. I grew up on Mamanasco Lake in Ridgefield. My father left home when I was in my early teens, and the years before that with him at home weren’t good; he was the neighborhood milkman, and the one good thing I did get from him, was the example, lesson and value of old-fashioned hard work. And my mom, Barbara or ‘Bobby’, was a cocktail waitress who was struggling to hold it together raising me and my brother and two sisters, and most times seemed more like another sister than a real mother. We never had a family vacation or anything like that.” Billy nevertheless glimmers when he recalls, “I got into plenty of trouble as a kid; but, I had the fastest car in town - a ‘69 Chevy Nova SS; I was a star running back on the football team - which is the first place I really got any recognition - I ran a 4.6 40 and was 175 pounds, and I even played in a Pop Warner Championship Game in Connecticut, and; I’d say I still had an overall happy childhood and was pretty popular.”
the only person who ever asked if I needed help, and I told him ‘thanks, but I was going to pay off my own debt myself ’. I considered joining the service, but that felt like I was putting my responsibility on the government and that didn’t feel right. I had a lot of motivation to work really hard. I had a pre-dawn truck route to the Hunts Point Market; I worked for George Huffmire Fabricators, and; my uncle was a sergeant with the Pound Ridge police, and my grandfather had been the Fire Chief of Pound Ridge, so I got a part-time job as a Pound Ridge cop. Being a Pound Ridge cop was very rewarding and paid pretty well, and it was good steady part-time work.”
“Then, when I was 16, my high school sweetheart, Lisa, and I, learned we were going to have a baby. I was so young, my mother had to sign for Lisa and I to get married. I dropped out of high school to start paying the bills. Our daughter, Crystal Marie, was born prematurely and only lived for less than a week. She would be 45 today,” Billy says with a momentary, but revealing quiver. Then regaining his comfortable way, he continues, “...I was dealing with the tragedy of it all, supporting myself and Lisa, and, without any insurance, facing bills from Lisa’s hospital, the baby’s separate neonatal hospital, and for the funeral - because the baby had been christened - and the bills were really huge amounts for me. I took four jobs, including getting started at the market. I got a job working for the three Norkin brothers, who then owned the Scotts Corner Market - after it had moved from its original location in the building that’s now Chubby’s to a location across the street from Chubby’s.” Billy recalls that, “Dave Norkin was

The 46 years Billy has been working at what is now known as The Market at Pound Ridge Square are a model of hometown American retail business success, and the characteristic hard work, perseverance, and agility that make that success happen. Billy worked his way up from a clerk and a driver, to front-end manager, to store manager, and then, soon after the Norkins moved the business into the Scotts Corners Market location, going from 8,500 to 30,000 square feet, Billy and fellow-worker Neil “Yogi” Hill led an ESOP acquisition of the business. The two

proceeded to buy-out all the other employeeowners, and then Billy became the sole shareholder, buying Yogi’s interest when he retired in 2007. In 2015, with the prospect looming that the property owner was going to replace Billy’s leasehold with their own branded superstore, Billy turned to locals David Firestein and Greg Manocherian, who led the acquisition and complete renovation of the entire mall under the new moniker ‘Pound Ridge Square’. As Firestein commented, “We were only interested in this project because of Billy. We knew he was a successful operator and, well, to put it simply, we shop here too! We didn’t want to lose Billy or the character of the operation. We knew it would take a substantial investment to modernize and bring the building up to first class standards, but we were comfortable with a long-term lease with Billy.”

“My son, Michael, who went to the Culinary Institute of America and came up through the ranks at The Market - including running the fish department and getting to know the Fulton Fish Market like I did - handles all of our buying and does a great job at it. Baldor brings us the freshest berries; Gotham Greens delivers the best vegetables; we buy our flowers from Connecticut Valley and our plants from a huge family nursery called J. DeFransesco & Sons, who only started selling to us after we went up for a visit with the owner, Joe DeFransesco, and after he determined he liked us. We offer a wide selection of brand name and gourmet products in every aisle - and I’d be happy to do a basket-forbasket price comparison with a market like StopNShop any time. My other son, Jason, who went to RIT and then Monroe for business, runs all our I.T. and tech - we’re even going to make self-service automated check-outs available. My daughter-in-law, Dina, Jason’s wife, manages the gift and flower departments. And Kerry, my daughter, runs Blind Charlie’s Cafe across the street.”
T
he Market enjoys the geographic advantage - with its location at 55 Westchester Avenue in Pound Ridge - of being in the center of, and closest driving distance to, a remarkably large number of homes in an extremely affluent marketplace. ...But it is the quality of the offering that distinguishes the Market!
IT IS THE QUALITY OF THE OFFERING THAT DISTINGUISHES THE MARKET!
The Market at Pound Ridge Square has a small town, village shop feel, but has a distinctly modern, bright and clean look. The large produce section rivals any green grocer, includes plenty of organics, and is constantly kept fresh by a dedicated produce manager and staff. There’s a full-time pastry chef and a full-time staff operating the bakery and making everything from scratch, pumping out a huge freshdaily selection of breads and desserts, including a gluten-free selection, and capable of preparing specialty cakes for any occasion. There’s an old-style butcher running the meat department and a separate dedicated fish department manager and staff. “I used to drive the truck to pick up the fish at the Fulton Fish Market every day, and we still use the same best-in-class purveyors,” Billy says, filling with a pride about The Market that is distinct from his otherwise completely modest and humble demeanor. 36

t’s when Billy talks about his family, and the close lifelong friends he and Lisa have in the community, and a few of the hundreds of young people he’s mentored over the years at The Market, that Billy seems most Billy. “I’m so proud of my two sons and the men they’ve become. It’s what life is all about. I feel like the luckiest guy in the whole world. Lisa and I renewed our vows about a dozen years ago in a little chapel in Martha’s Vineyard, and we’re happier than ever. We have our house in Somers and a place on the Cape where we get to entertain friends and, now, our grandchildren; Michael’s son Michael Jr., and daughter Alexa, and Jason and Dina’s 4-year old son Hunter, and they have another on the way!” Billy likes to go deep sea and freshwater fishing with friends and family, with plenty of jaunts around the Cape, and annual excursions off Montauk and to Costa Rica. He likes to golf, too, but will immediately start excusing what he promises to be a mixed performance. “I remember the day my uncle took me out for the first time. It was a really foggy morning, I was in my 20s...it’s a real special memory for me. I guess I’ve liked the game ever since, but I’m not good.” As for his taste in music, Billy says, “We like the moldy oldies. Brian Adams was the first concert Lisa and I ever went to. We like McCartney, and saw him at Yankee Stadium. Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and we like country music.” As for the ideal dinner party, made up of the people - dead or alive - that are most interesting to Billy: “Thurmon Munson - Because I’m a die hard Yankee fan and, in my opinion, he’s the quintessential Yankee. He had a rocky relationship with his father, married his high school sweetheart, liked to eat frogs legs, smoked fine cigars, and never called in sick – might be interesting to compare notes and get his take on the

major leaguers of today. William (Billy) Selino, the grandfather I never knew. No one really talked about him much and I only heard some not-so-good rumors. My grandmother divorced him young, and he died at age 40, when my mother was only 12 years old. I’d like to know the real story behind the man that I’m named after. Steven Tyler - Because I like his demeanor and his philosophy of life. As he would say, ”The things that come to those that wait may be the things left by those that got there first.” An evening with the “Demon of Screamin’ ” would be “Crazy.” And, for Lisa, “I’d invite Chip and Joanna Gains because of their family-first values and their ability to reinvent themselves and overcome the many challenges in their personal lives and business career...Together. Their combined sense of humor would make for a fun evening!” Billy is salt of the earth. He’s the dad he never had. He’s mentored hundreds of young employees. He’s a true Christian, with real integrity of character and a giving spirit. And he’s a hub in the B&NC Mag community.

The Holiday Meal is at the center of being home for the holidays, and great food is at the center of the Holiday Meal. There are two routes: (A) Pull out the old family recipes and a couple of cook books, consider the particular requirements and tastes of invited guests, decide on a menu you can pull off, get to a top quality market to source the best ingredients, and then again the day before or of the holiday so you can gather ingredients that must be fresh, clear you calendar and your kitchen for the cooking, and then find your inner Daniel Boulud in preparing and plating dinner for the hungry crowd in your dining room, or (B) Call the caterer. Either route, The Market at Pound Ridge Square is your destination.

For B&NC MAG, The Market at Pound Ridge Square prepared and delivered a feast for each of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah, complete with home baked desserts. Of course, (A) each meal can be sourced entirely from The Market, or (B) The Market’s capable, clean and courteous catering staff can deliver and serve the entire repast - and at surprisingly affordable rates. Wine, paired properly with the food, pleases the palate, relaxes the mood, and makes the Holiday Meal extra special. Pairing is all about the chemical reaction going on for your senses when the flavors and properties of the food come together with those of a given wine. A bodacious beaujolais-on-a-budget with a burger will make for a far better meal than the best big-bucks-bordeaux with a beluga that really wanted to be buddied-up with a palate cleansing beer instead. Ancona’s Wines & Liquors gave B&NC MAG recommended wine pairings for each dinner and desert in each of the featured Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah feasts, from Cody Foster, Wine Director at Ancona’s and a Certified Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers and the Sommelier Society of America. And Ancona’s can recommend the perfect pairing for whatever menu you have planned or accommodate the most discerning of sommeliers. Table settings can quite literally set the mood for the Holiday Meal, and fine table linens are an essential part of the ultimately refined Holiday look and feel. Notably, Léron Linens, one of the premier creators of quality and custom linens in the U.S. since 1910, is now newly based in New Canaan, after more than a century in Manhattan. David Forster, who is Léron’s third-generation owner and runs the company with his wife, Dale, grew up in Darien, and lived in Pound Ridge, until their more recent move to North Salem. Léron offers a wide variety of couture bed, bath, and table linens, with the highest quality hand workmanship, and available with motifs to fit any occasion; and can customize any order to fit requirements and deliver truly bespoke linens. One of the Thanksgiving tablecloths from Léron, has the embroidered signatures of former honored guests. A fun service Léron provides, is that they will embroider replica signatures on any linen - and even continue the process, and add new honored guests at the customer’s request - turning an already extraordinary household item into a treasured heirloom. The 2019 Dundee is pure, concentrated, Cameron secret sauce. Sourced from the estate’s great grand crus--this is a blend of declassified Abbey Ridge and Clos Electrique. The end result is simply impeccable--driven by notes of sumptuous black cherry, lavender, agave, and petrichor--this embodies all the hallmarks of quintessential Cameron Pinot Noir. If someone is making finer Pinot at this cost of entry, please fill me in. Old world soul. Practicing organic.
2019 Pierre Vincent Girardin ‘Eclat de Calcaire’ Bourgogne Blanc $39.99 I gotta say--this kid really hit one out of the park. This is simply outstanding White Burgundy, easily mistaken for well-made Meursault: bound with complex flavors of smokey mineral and flint embedded in a complex fabric of tree fruit, fresh herbs, and spice. And the price is so silly. These are wines that I’ll regularly be bringing home myself as long as we can keep them in stock. Practicing Organic. 2020 Broc Cellars ‘Love’ White $21.99 A Rhone-style blend: Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. The wine is made by Chris Brockway in Berkley. The “Love”-branded wines represent Chris’ effort to bring delicious, wholesome wines to the market at a weeknight price point. Nothing is added--including nutrients, yeast, bacteria, enzymes, or additional fermentation agents. The finished wine is bottled with little or no S02 (sulfur dioxide/sulfites/sulfur). Aromas of citrus, fresh herbs, and a distinct salinity bring this wine character and soul. Besides being a health-conscious choice--the end result is ridiculously crushable natural selection.
CHRISTMAS Under the holiday meal, the Léron tablecloth is adorned with wooden soldiers and Christmas trees. For the place setting, ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’! Or, as for the holiday desert, an embroidered wintry motif, like skiers.
RECIPES Roasted Filet of Beef Tenderloin
Chipotle Crema
1 whole filet of beef (4 to 5 pounds), trimmed and tied 2 tablespoons unsalted butter at room temperature 1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 tablespoon coarsely ground black pepper
1 1/2 cups olive oil mayonnaise 2 limes, zested, and juiced 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce 1 teaspoon garlic powder Add all ingredients to a food processor, blend until smooth
Directions: Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F. Place the beef on a baking sheet and pat the outside dry with a paper towel. Spread the butter on with your hands. Sprinkle evenly with the salt and pepper. Roast in the oven for exactly 22 minutes for rare and 25 minutes for medium-rare. Remove the beef from the oven, cover it tightly with aluminum foil, and allow it to rest at room temperature for 20 minutes. Remove the strings and slice the filet thickly.
ANCONA’S WINE PAIRINGS: 2015 Francesco Rinaldi & Figli Barolo $63.99 Just textbook—the 2015 from Normale delivers right out of the gate. No new oak here, just soul. On the nose: dried cherries, rose petals, leather, spice box, and dry dusty earth all harmonize along with just a whisper of orange peel, and bitter herbs. On the palate—there is a lot of stuffing here but its tannins are so fine-grained and elegant even as just a baby, this Barolo Normale is a true pleasure to drink at the very moment.
2018 Cassini Saint-Emilion $35.99 Organic & Biodynamic: Cassini offers a modern take on Sain-Emilion— driven by layer upon layer of potent cassis, fresh herbs, and generous amalgamation wild berries, all unobscured by the flavors of a new oak barrel. Arnauld Cassini might best be described as a genius. This guy is bad to the bone and the wines really speak for themselves.
2020 Domaine de la Combe Au Mas Rigaou Rouge $17.99 Although I know it would be good, the Combe Au Mas Rouge has seriously exceeded my expectations--what an incredibly pleasurable glass of red wine. On the nose: creamy black cherries, black olives, wood smoke, black tea, and fresh jam rise from the glass. On the palate it is mouth-coating, fine-grained, and textural. A medium-plus bodied frame offers layer upon layer of more black creamy fruit counterpointed by savory nuances of white pepper, garrigue, and warm spices. Organic & Biodynamic. 44

Poached Salmon Recipe: 1 teaspoon olive oil Four 4- to 6-ounce fillets salmon Sea salt and white pepper 2 lemons, 1 halved and 1 cut into wedges 1 bottle dry white wine, such as pinot grigio Fresh parsley, for garnish Drizzle the olive oil over the salmon fillets and season with some sea salt and white pepper. Set aside. Fill a high-sided large skillet one-third of the way up with water. Add the wine and lemon halves. Bring to a low simmer, add the salmon and let cook until firm to the touch, 5 to 7 minutes for medium. For well-done salmon, cook for 10 minutes. Serve garnished with the lemon wedges and parsley
ANCONA’S WINE PAIRINGS: 2020 Liquid Farm Chardonnay Ancona’s Cuvée VI $44.99 Ancona’s Cuvée #6 if for the White Burgundy Lovers! When I taste a wine like this, I can’t help but smile. This is archetype Liquid Farm: concentrated, detailed, and layered--offering the perfect balance of minerality and well-portioned, balanced fruit. On the nose: crunchy yellow apples, Asian pear, fresh cream, sea salt, hazelnut and linen are punctuated by fine lines of crushed, mineral limestone. On the palate--this wine pillowy and full while remaining very fresh and light on its feet: lemon oil, fresh cotton, the essence of crushed seashells cling to the palate--lively and fresh. Any trace of oak barrel is barely detectable, a whisper in the distance. Practicing Organic. Pretty much my ideal white for the season. 2019 Pascal Janvier Pineau d’Aunis $24.99 Referred to affectionately among the team as ‘PJ Rouge’--the grape is Pineau d’Aunis, a pale, peppery red grape that produces red wines that are delicately tannic while saying light on their feet. This bottling is feather light, but packed with flavor: cranberries, peppercorn, petrichor (think about the aroma of fresh rain on hot pavement). It’s the perfect accompaniment for salmon— particularly with a light chill, say 40 minutes in the fridge.

Ancona’s new favorite Pet Nat--this Gamay Pet Nat is masterminded Raph at Domaine Saint Cyr. This is high-toned, mineral, and crushable to the core. A stunning balance of savory and thirst quenching. Green apples, raspberry, salinity, and cotton candy. The only problem, perhaps, is that the bottle empties a little too too quickly.

WEDDINGS & VOWS
05.28.21 PHOTOGRAPHY: NICOLE WAGNER
Jamie and Brian met on Bumble in summer of 2018 and instantly clicked. They were living in Wilton and Greenwich at the time, and met up in New Canaan for dinner. “He was everything I was always looking for, and has the sweetest heart,” Jamie said. The pair were immediately an item. The couple moved-in together in New Canaan, where Jamie works as a mentor with the New Canaan Mounted Troop, and Brian owns a finance firm. And in the summer of 2020, Brian proposed on a beach vacation in Montauk, over a bonfire with s’mores, putting the ring right into a marshmallow! “I had no clue. I was like, ‘why is there a ring in here?!’ He didn’t even ask my parents permission!” Jamie laughs, “We’re all so close I would have thought that somebody for sure would have spilled the beans.”

I DO...
WEDDINGS & VOWS
The couple held off on wedding planning to enjoy engagement bliss and to see what happened with pandemic restrictions… but by March of this year, they started looking at venues. Jamie is 34 and Brian is 49, so they wanted something sophisticated and mature, and smaller and more intimate. They picked a beautiful nearby space that was perfect for what they wanted. “We planned an entire wedding in two months! When I say small, we kept it really small. There were fifty people - and it was actually just family. We’re each one of six children, and a lot of our siblings are married and have kids, so our immediate families are big! Everyone had such a rough year being isolated and alone, we really just wanted everyone to be together, and have our families get to know each other and enjoy each other’s company,” Brian said. Prior to the wedding, the couple had ‘first-look’ photos done where Jamie spent the night before the wedding with her sister, Jaclyn, who brought in a vintage Rolls Royce to drive the couple over to the wedding venue. Jamie and Brian each had one of their brothers and sisters as their best man and maid of honor, and their nieces were flower girls. Brian’s mother passed away five years ago, and her favorite flowers were purple orchids, so we had them at the ceremony to honor her. Jamie’s father was unfortunately too ill to attend the wedding, so instead of a traditional father-daughter dance, Jamie danced with Brian’s dad, and Brian danced with Jamie’s mom, and Jamie had a separate sisters dance with her three sisters. Jamie’s mother walked her down the aisle.
“There was lots of dancing, and probably way too many speeches. Everyone was so funny. My sister had us cracking up and Brian’s dad had us all in tears,” Jamie said. Brian interjected, “We didn’t follow any traditional playbook, which is funny, because we’re actually both fairly traditional people… but it was the best night.” Rain was in the forecast, but it held off until right after the newlyweds walked down the aisle and, as Jamie recalls, “Then it absolutely poured during the reception - which made it even more romantic, since we were inside with massive gorgeous French doors leading to a covered patio. Besides, they say it’s good luck to have rain on your wedding day!” The couple danced their first dance to ‘their song’, Tennessee Whiskey. 54

LEVY PFLUMM WEDDING Claire and Sebastian were married at Caramoor on September 4, 2021. Claire had always dreamt of getting married in her hometown, and felt like New York was a really good mid-point between their California b-school guests and Sebastian’s family in Germany. “Of all the places we visited, we decided that Caramoor was absolutely perfect. I even had my high school graduation at Caramoor and it’s just such a special and beautiful place. They just completed some spectacular renovations and the sunken garden was lush and grown and stunning. It was also the perfect mix of outdoor and a sort of indoor tented space. It made me really proud to show off my hometown.”

“We basically had an entire wedding weekend because we had so many people coming from out of town,” Sebastian said. Friday night the couple hosted a rehearsal dinner on Lake Waccabuc at the Waccabuc Country Club with a cookout, picnic tables, a pontoon boat, swimming, s’mores, canoeing, and even a bit of a German theme with big pretzels, bratwurst, and plenty of beer.
Claire Levy grew up in Waccabuc, attended John Jay High School and then Wesleyan University, and at 28, moved across the country to pursue her MBA at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley… where she met...Sebastian Pflumm, who grew up in Germany, went to school and worked in Switzerland, and had planned to move back to Europe after his Haas MBA. “We met during orientation week, the first week of business school. We were best friends right away, but even after things turned romantic we waited to get engaged until we graduated as a way of making sure we could live and work together in the real world and not just in the fantasy land of graduate school,” Claire explains. “Then, after three and a half years of sharing projects, classes, trips, and an apartment, Sebastian proposed to me on a trip to Sonoma.” Sebastian had originally planned on proposing on the first night of the Spring 2019 weekend in Sonoma, but a snafu at the jewelry store meant the ring didn’t come in time. “We still had an amazing weekend and I used a necklace I had gotten as a placeholder until the ring

arrived to propose to Claire over a romantic dinner in our cabin, with flowers, candles, and some good champagne. It all worked out - she said ‘yes’!” The couple live in San Francisco, where Claire is a product marketing manager at YouTube, and Sebastian works for McKinsey as a management consultant.

The wedding day was filled with lots of white and green with pops of deep blues and purples. Continuing covid-related boarder restrictions meant that a lot of invited German guests couldn’t attend afterall, but Claire and Sebastian were grateful to get whoever they could back together again after everyone being separated for the pandemic for so long, and tied the knot with almost a hundred of their family and closest friends. “One of Sebastian’s three brothers wasn’t able to make it because of the two-week quarantine and a new baby, but our amazing wedding coordinator and DJ were able to incorporate him seamlessly into the ceremony with a meaningful recording.” Claire said, “and I’m half Jewish, so we were married under a chuppah, and we had a secular version of the seven blessings, where seven friends read about what they hope for us in our marriage and our future.”

After the couples first dance, Claire, who studied voice growing up, performed three songs to kick off the partying. And once the more formal wedding band wrapped up, a DJ who played German techno music helped the crowd dance the night away. Although neither Claire nor Sebastian is vegetarian, they elected to serve only vegetarian food, explaining, “Your wedding is a time in your life where you have some real purchasing power. It’s a significant opportunity for impact. So we went with a more sustainable approach - that was completely delicious. We also focused our registry on a few of our favorite charities: the Rainforest Trust, African Wildlife Foundation, and Oceana.” The wedding weekend was capped off with a brunch at the Levy’s pool in Waccabuc, complete with mimosas and breakfast burritos. Following the nuptials, Claire and Sebastian honeymooned in Bora Bora and then Taha’a. 60

Northern Westchester Hospital has brought the renowned cardiac expertise of Lenox Hill Hospital to Westchester, Putnam, and Fairfield Counties The state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab, which is part of the Seema Boesky Heart Center at NWH, is an extension of Lenox Hill Hospital, a nationally renowned cardiac services program.
EVERY DAY IS A GIFT SEEMA BOESKY HEART CENTER AT NORTHERN WESTCHESTER HOSPITAL Discover why this center, which includes a state-of-theart electrophysiology lab and cardiac catheterization lab, is nothing short of a regional Center of Excellence for cardiac care…just minutes away. Anna Delahanty of Somers spent the gorgeous day of Monday, March 22, 2021, making her famous sauce for Sunday dinner. She took a break for a walk with her husband, Larry. After returning home, Larry heard “this massive crash – oh my God, Anna…. she’d fallen face first in the hallway.” Anna was turning blue-grey. She gasped her last breath in front of Larry. “She had no pulse, no heartbeat, nothing.” Larry knew it was a heart attack. For Anna Delahanty, every day is a gift after surviving heart failure. When Anna needed instant cardiac care, the Somers volunteer ambulance and Westchester EMS brought her to Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH), just fifteen minutes away from her home —a decision that saved her life. Until last year, if you or a family member in northern Westchester or Putnam County had a heart attack and called 911, chances are you’d be taken to Danbury Hospital or Stamford Hospital in Connecticut or Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. Now, all that has changed for you, your family and friends.
The Hospital’s interventional cardiologists rotate through Lenox Hill and NWH to maintain the highest level of skill and quality. This connection means that patients – you and your loved ones – receive care from some of the nation’s top cardiac physicians, each of whom has extensive training in high-risk cases. The level of cardiac care at NWH is equivalent to that at New York City’s most distinguished, high-profile cardiac programs. The fact that Anna Delahanty had access to first-rate interventional cardiologists at Northern Westchester Hospital who partner with top cardiac surgeons at Lenox Hill, as well as practitioners who specialize in recovery all within the same health system – Northwell Health – was essential for the highest quality clinical care.
Time is crucial in treating cardiac emergencies Every second you’re left untreated means more damage to your heart muscle. The sooner your blocked vessel is opened, the better the chance for an excellent outcome. When every second counts, residents can feel confident that NWH is here – and ready – right in their backyard. NWH is the only hospital with a cardiac catheterization lab within 20-30 minutes of the Anna’s home. She had suffered a massive heart attack causing heart failure. Anything greater than 30 minutes without intervention and it was very unlikely Anna was stable enough to survive.
We’re proud to provide advanced cardiac care in the place your heart calls home The Hospital cares for cardiac emergencies, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week – treating coronary artery disease, which is the narrowing or blockage of one or more arteries carrying oxygenated blood to the heart. While 90 percent of patients will be treated in Westchester, those who require bypass surgery or require valve replacement will be treated at Lenox Hill. This means you and your family receive comprehensive and seamless cardiac care at the highest level, no matter the issue. Anna needed emergency bypass surgery. Because no cath lab performs this procedure, her interventional cardiologist at NWH called his colleague at Lenox Hill. Because of the strong partnership between colleagues, Anna had a fighting chance. Using a catheter, Anna’s interventional cardiologist at NWH placed a pump in her heart’s left ventricle to work as an artificial heart, stabilizing her so she could withstand the trip to Lenox. The continuity of high-quality care Anna experienced was essential to her survival.
Restored Confidence with Cardiac Rehabilitation If you suffer a cardiac emergency, you’ll be treated at NWH or Lenox Hill and receive a direct referral to get crucial follow-up care at the cardiac rehabilitation program at NWH. A key benefit of the program is restored confidence. After a cardiac emergency, any pain in your chest area may cause anxiety. However, these fears typically go away during or after cardiac rehabilitation as patients see undeniable evidence of their gains in strength and stamina. Activities like walking uphill on the treadmill, riding the bike, or using the rowing machine give patients great confidence. Anna participates in the cardiac rehabilitation program and continues to astonish everyone with her rapid recovery. She is healthy and happy to be home and back to making her famous Sunday dinners for her family. She is thankful to the experts at Northwell Health for saving her life. “There aren’t enough words to express my gratitude to everybody.”

60 YEARS of
SKI & BE SEEN BY John D. McCown PHOTOGRAPHY: Julia Dags
When you think about it, isn’t it the people and places that make us love where we live? In our neck of the woods, only an hour or so from Manhattan yet a verdant, spacious, open-sky world away, certain people and places are home to us. Skip Beitzel is one of those people and Hickory & Tweed is one of those places.
Skip was seven years old in 1961 when Jimmy and Roberta Ross opened the ski and apparel shop at 410 Main Street in the center of Armonk. Then, and in annual visits after, the entire Beitzel family visited Jimmy Ross to be outfitted with ski equipment. Skip loved the place, loved its rustic ambiance. When he was old enough to secure an afterschool and weekend job, he went to work for Jimmy. The lure of the store and the opportunity to learn from Jimmy kept Skip coming back. “I worked for Jimmy throughout my high school years at Horace Greeley and continued every summer when I was at University of Vermont. He was a great teacher,” Skip fondly remembered. Of the many things Skip learned about the sports business from Jimmy, key among them was the importance of insuring that every customer enjoy a great in-store experience. This augmented a strong foundation Skip had learned about business from his father, Spike Beitzel, a senior executive at IBM. But, it was Skip’s own passion for an active lifestyle, especially for skiing in winter and surfing in summer, that would enhance his insight into the needs and wants of the store’s customers. Hickory & Tweed first opened its doors the same year that IBM established its headquarters in Armonk. The name of the store itself telegraphs the focus on skiing during the early days of the sport. Hickory was the wood used for first generation skis. Clothes made of tweed wool kept skiers warm. An early repeat customer of the store was Thomas J. Watson, Jr., CEO of IBM, who developed a close relationship with Jimmy Ross. In the late 1960’s, the IBM head made a suggestion to his friend Jimmy. “We’ve had great success leasing mainframe computers to customers rather than selling them. For many of the same reasons, you ought to do that with skis”. Inspired by that suggestion, Hickory & Tweed became the first ski 66

shop in the country to offer a ski leasing program. The success of that program was immediate and was quickly copied at other ski shops and has been ubiquitous since then. This innovation in ski retail started at Hickory & Tweed. After graduating from college, Skip remained focused on sports and started the first skateboard park in the Northeast in Ocean City, New Jersey, which also happened to be his favorite spot for surfing. Wanting to learn more about business, Skip attended Harvard Business School. After graduation in 1980 with an MBA, he went to work for Young & Rubicam, a major NYC advertising firm. In 1985, Skip and Jimmy Ross had a conversation that would alter the course of Skip’s life. As they were walking on the beach in Ocean City, Jimmy told Skip that he was considering selling Hickory & Tweed and, if he did, there was nobody he’d prefer to sell it to more than Skip. Skip was progressing nicely at Y&R and clearly had a bright future, but the opportunity to recast himself into a career where his true passion lay was irresistible. Six months later, a transaction closed and Skip committed fully to his love affair with Hickory & Tweed. While most of his business school classmates embraced Wall Street, Madison Avenue or some other large corporate address, Skip chose to return to his roots and go to Main Street. He gave up his Manhattan apartment and moved back to northern Westchester County not far from where he was born. Skip married Michaela and they began a family that would grow to include three sons. He leaned heavily on what Jimmy Ross had taught him about customer service. A clear template for him was the experiences he himself had as both a customer and an employee over two decades. What made Hickory & Tweed special then continues to make it special today, as all efforts are focused on optimal customer experience. Personal service was and continues to be the hallmark of that experience. The best merchandise and the best customer experience make shopping at Hickory & Tweed a treat. BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

Today the store is much larger than the shop Skip first stepped in sixty years ago. In almost 12,000 square feet, skis and bikes reign supreme - along with a full range of apparel to fit active lifestyles. There’s even merchandise that carries the Hickory & Tweed brand - a testimony to how much Skip has built awareness of this special place across the country. Despite its size, Hickory & Tweed exudes a New England charm. The feeling of being transported to Vermont, to White Christmas, is such that you could find yourself thinking Bing Crosby will soon exit with skis on his shoulder. While the store is something a Hollywood set designer would create, the service and products delivered by Skip and his staff are state-of-the-art, resulting in five star online ratings. “This has been my go to place for 15 years”, “You won’t find a better shop anywhere” and “The greatest ski and cycle shop”, are typical customer comments.
Also included in Hickory & Tweed’s big, extended family are the legions of repeat customers. Over 3,000 families now participate in their ski equipment leasing program and that leads to lots of repeat visits and a strong bond between customers and staff.
Skip talks about Hickory & Tweed with deep and abiding affection and with well-earned pride. “I just love the atmosphere here, particularly in winter when multiple families are getting outfitted with new ski equipment, as the smell of hot ski wax permeates the air. Everybody is happy and enjoying themselves. I’ve had customers tell me that they’ve never experienced more pleasant or effective customer service.”
Skip loves his life and it shows up in everything he does. He retains a passion for skiing (Stowe, Vermont and Alta, Utah are favorites), but what he likes the most about the sport is it is something the whole family does. His wife Michaela and sons Mac, Chase and Ryder are all excellent skiers.
When Skip talks about Hickory & Tweed, he frequently uses the term ‘family’. His love affair with Hickory & Tweed is a family affair. It’s a family business with his wife Michaela and son Mac working full-time. Michaela is in charge of all apparel and fashion (along with Geri Moore and Debbie Coldwell) while Mac is focused on their growing online business. Pam Conte, whose mother, Dot, worked at the store for over 30 years, is also a huge presence. Skip’s sister Tish Vredenburgh helps maintain the financial records with Hickory & Tweed star Beth Yaffa. One of the secrets to the great experience customers receive when they come into the store is the attitude of the employees. Skip sees the employees as part of one big extended family, going all the way back to his own time as a teenage employee working for Jimmy. Just as Jimmy Ross mentored Skip, Skip has mentored hundreds of employees, not only in matters related to the store but also related to college and career decisions. Like Skip did, many of these “Tweeders” work on weekends, summers and during holidays from college. One member of this alumni group, Armonk resident Sonia Orlova, commented, “I feel lucky that I worked at Hickory & Tweed during high school and college because of how much I learned and because of the friends I made working there. Skip and Michaela were always supportive and encouraging, and always available when I needed some help or advice about my college or life plans, or anything.” And when employees look forward to going to work as they do at Hickory & Tweed, that enthusiasm infects.

Skip’s participation in and support of community activities is well known. He’s a 25-year board member of the Boys & Girls Club in Mt. Kisco and a long-time member of the President’s Council Board at Northern Westchester Hospital. In 2014, the Armonk Chamber of Commerce named Skip Citizen of the Year. The Beitzels are members at the Bedford Golf & Tennis Club. At some point, the reins to Hickory & Tweed will be turned over to Skip’s son Mac. Much like Skip, Mac grew up working at the store. His plans include growing its online business. “I know part of the future is more online”, Skip admits, “but I’m a store guy and for me there is nothing quite like walking around to see if we can do something to improve the experience of a customer.” Skip and Michaela Beitzel, H&T Owners

At Hickory & Tweed, business is personal to Skip and the Beitzels. Because of that, generations of customers from Bedford to New Canaan and beyond think of coming back to Hickory & Tweed as coming home. That’s a special kind of love for a special kind of store.

Oprah saying, “Skiing is the next best thing to having wings” kinda explains why ski fashion is famous for its flights of fancy. On the slopes, at the resorts, and in the streets, skiwear and apres-ski coalesce into a dazzling collage of fluorescent color, whimsical Nordic knits, sexy leggings, cheeky pom pom hats, and hotpink mirrored goggles. For six decades the puffer jacket, skin tight legwear and chunky boot silhouette has remained the same. No other pro sport has so indelibly influenced mainstream fashion. And for six decades Hickory & Tweed has been selling ski-resort-worthy winter fashion alongside their top-flight ski equipment. During Covid, while business attire and party clothes were stranded in a retail tundra, ski wear brands were reaching new peaks. Lucky for us, all the hip new California lines and the iconic, European heritage labels are alive and well and flying off the shelves at H & T. “Almost every other sport was shut down, but people could still ski!” says Michaela Beitzel, partner and buyer at H & T. “At the same time, the wholesome, radiant athletic look and luxe athleisure trend of oversized knits and leggings was everywhere.” Completing the look: sporting sun-kissed cheeks glowing from outdoor exercise, naturally. “Who doesn’t want to look super healthy right now?” says Beitzel.
“Ski clothes also make any body type look good,” adds Michaela. “Stretch pants are so slimming, it’s become everyone’s winter wardrobe staple”. Which has been the case since Maria Bogner first introduced stretch ski pants in an array of colors in the late 50s. Soon Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor were wearing them around town and the rest is history. “We’ve carried Bogner for 60 years and we continue to do fantastically well with it,” says Beitzel. “Also with Bogner’s younger, edgier Fire & Ice collection.” While runway fashion might emerge from Paris, Milan and New York, skiwear’s most influential brands spring from the mountain meccas— Colorado (Obermeyer and Spyder), California (Patagonia), Germany (Bogner and Schneider), and Scandinavia (Helly Hansen, et al). “Amundsen of Norway is new in America but already one of our top sellers.” notes Michaela. “Their mixed material jackets and vests and their colorful anoraks are old school and cool, at the same time. Anoraks are having a serious comeback. Holden is another up and coming new brand out of Ventura, California,” she adds. “Really classic with a twist. The down hybrid pullovers are getting a lot of attention.”
“We never followed trends: we buy what we personally love and our customers depend on us for that,” says Michaela. Depend on them also to stock both the cutting edge, and trusted luxe outwear brands. “Our brand reps become like family members, who we’ve known forever and are thrilled to see from year to year,” she muses. “Klaus Obermeyer, the brand’s founder, used to yodel for us personally whenever we met him at the ski shows. And he’s still skiing (and yodeling) at 101!” Skiing in style will keep you forever young.

MONTE & ANGELINA
LIPMAN at home for the holidays BY Michael Kaplan
PHOTOGRAPHY: Rhonda Spevak
STYLING: Mindy Saad
Monte and Angelina Lipman are a hit couple, in perfect sync and balance, with a great mood and rhythm, and singing a delightful tune. They are at once the epitome of the power couple, and still totally relatable, grounded, warm, earnest, and friendly. After living in New York City for many years, they made the move to Bedford in pursuit of a weekend getaway, but the beautiful surroundings and welcoming community felt serendipitous when it came to deciding where to raise their children. Eight years ago, they bought their spectacular Katonah estate. Both hailing from large families -Monte is the oldest of 9!- the epicenter of the Lipmans’ life is family, with the spotlight on their three children: their son B. Remington who’s 16 and who’s known as Remy, daughter Juliet Angelina who is 14, and their youngest, Cameron Scott who is 7.
About the brothers’ life story and path in the music industry, Monte explains, “Avery and I were born in Kentucky on a military base. Our parents were kind of like hippies, but after we hitchhiked cross-country as a family and settled into California, when I was 10, our folks divorced and then we spent a few years growing up bicoastally, with our dad in Malibu and mom in Brooklyn. One day, my brother and I were watching Happy Days in the mid-seventies on an old TV, and sparks started flying everywhere and the thing literally just blew up. My dad took it as a sign from above. After that, and for some of our informative years, Avery and I were always huddled around a radio or a record player listening to my dad’s albums. From the Beatles to Stevie Wonder, to the music of the ‘70s, that’s probably when we developed such an affinity for music.” Their dad Monte is the Founder and Chairman of Republic moved back to Montclair, New Jersey in 1979, and Records, working alongside his younger brother, best Monte and Avery attended Montclair High School, friend and Co-Founder, Avery. A division of Universal where they both played baseball and football. Monte Music Group, the world’s leading music company, went to the University at Albany and played some Republic’s roster includes Ariana Grande, Drake, John football there too - and, of course, Avery followed in Mellencamp, Jonas Brothers, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, his footsteps, and even continued to share a room. Pearl Jam, Post Malone, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and Monte takes some measure of pride in his Jersey many, many more. Republic is consistently recognized ‘hometown’ and in his alma mater, and has delivered as the industry leader, with all signs pointing to another the commencement speech at both Montclair High year at the top of the charts in 2021. and University at Albany. “Early in my career, I had already been fired from three jobs in a short period of time,” recalls Monte. “I clearly thought I knew what I was doing, and I just wanted a job where I couldn’t get canned, so I figured we would start our own company,” he laughs. “We’re as passionate about music now as we were then—if not more so. We’ve been very privileged to work with an incredible roster of artists.” 76

Working together with Avery, the brothers have cultivated a family culture at Republic. At the helm of the label, Monte oversees releasing music into the marketplace from both global superstars and new talent. Monte & Avery Lipman
About their achievement, Monte explains, “First of all, Avery and I jumped into it at a very early age, with all four feet and blind ambition. We made a lot of mistakes, but we’ve always had the confidence to trust our own instincts and judgement. Because music is so personal, we are humbled to help curate the soundtrack of people’s lives. This industry has been changing rapidly and constantly for my entire career. We celebrate and embrace the individuality of our artists and support them in pursuing their goals, dreams and aspirations. We also recognize that these artists have the ability to make the world a better place, and we take tremendous pride in our role with them. When young people ask me what to study to prepare them for a career in the music industry, I say, ‘human behavior.’ It’s all about understanding people and respecting their artistry. With us, there’s no ceiling on success. If you want to be the biggest artist in the world, we’re your label.”
Monte’s reputation as a leader and a good guy in the music industry is well established.
CNN Commentator and former Chairman and CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America, Hilary Rosen, said,
““
Monte is really impressive. He’s the rarest of top execs who run a business and have such a close relationship to artists. And his ear is as good as his instincts!”

““
Monte is one of the true legends of the music business. His track record is literally unmatched by any other executive in the industry today. Just look at the charts on any given week, and look at the artists he’s signed to Republic. It’s crazy! Monte is as good as it gets as a label head. The gold standard. And a great guy onN Otop V / D Eof C 2it!” 0 2 1
““
Professionally, Monte is among the very top of music executive ranking. The quality of his label’s artist roster just can’t be beat. Personally Angelina and Monte are the ideal couple. They have three lovely children, reside in a magnificent estate and share a zest for life that is contagious and enviable. They make all of us Westchester neighbors very proud indeed.”

“I’ve always admired that about Monte, and we try to teach our children,
‘Have your feet planted firmly on the ground, but have no fear of heights’,” Angelina agrees, without missing a beat. Truly in harmony, it seems as if they’re reading from the same script with a common agenda, but their interplay is just as much of a musical call-and-response based on a clear ideal of mutual respect.
When asked, “So this is all a childhood dream come true?”Monte started to answer, but thinking the question was for her, Angelina said first, “Yes. This is a childhood dream come true for me. Really and truly, when I was 19, I actually wrote a list of all the things I wanted in the perfect man...and Monte checks off every box on the list. He’s humble, kind and loving, and a great dad.” ...A little embarrassed, Monte corrected, “It’s you, Angelina, that makes me a better person.” Angelina (Davis) was also born in Brooklyn, to British parents of Jamaican descent, who had come to New York for her dad to work as a doctor. Similar to Monte, Angelina’s parents also divorced when she was ten. She relocated to Miami with her mom, attended Gulliver Prep, and spent summers and vacations in London and the UAE, visiting with her dad. She achieved a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Columbia University, a Master’s Degree in Psychology from New York University, and a dual-PHD in Social Personality and Industrial Organizational Psychology from New York University. She went on to work in the fields of management consulting and applied research and also worked as an assistant professor at the Business School of Columbia University, conducting research, mentoring graduate students, and teaching the MBA negotiation course. “I’m a research psychologist by trade, and I’m interested in the psychology of management and how teams and people work,” Angelina explains. “This concept has continually evolved for me. When I decided to leave academia to become a full-time mom, it was hard to switch that part off. I’ve become more and more focused on discovering ways for society to make quality mental health more accessible. As a natural evolution of this ambition, I’m releasing a book titled Blocking The Noise: A Roadmap to Happiness, which I want to illustrate an actionable and accessible path to wellness.” Angelina and Monte first met at a lounge downtown in New York City. “Now that I have a 13-year-old daughter, I wish I could say we met at church or temple,” laughs Angelina. After a two year courtship, they were married at what was then their Bedford weekend home. “We’ve been best friends from the start, and we work well together,” Angelina continues. “We’re both pretty driven and a little too organized.”

Angelina says, “For us, making this our fulltime permanent residence was really about the local community. Monte can get into his office in Manhattan quick enough and has the real convenience of being about 15 minutes from Westchester Airport, and yet you’re really in a country neighborhood, filled with great people and all sorts of special local services and amenities.” Of the area, Monte adds, “Katonah really is home for us. We’ve really worked at putting some deep roots into the community.” To that end, the couple have become major supporters of the Westchester Land Trust, and Angelina has served on the Rippowam Cisqua School Board. Angelina also just joined the Board of the Bedford Riding Lanes Association. Angelina adds, “We’d cleared the riding trails that run over our property but had little involvement because we don’t ride. But during covid we learned we could use the BRLA trails for hiking and other fun, and now taking the family for a walk on the trails is one of our favorite activities.” And well beyond local boundaries, the Lipmans are substantially involved in charitable work and are renowned philanthropists, with a general focus in the areas of cancer and addiction. Monte is on the board of the TJ Martell Foundation for aids and cancer research. Monte and Angelina are on the leadership committee of DKMS (concentrated on eliminating blood cancer) and have been honored by the organization for their significant support. The Lipmans are recognized supporters of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, the City of Hope, and The Neil Lasher Music Fund at Caron Treatment Centers, which advocates for addiction recovery treatment. And the UJAFederation has honored Monte and Avery for their substantial generosity. Angelina wearing dress by CD Greene, Earings Pollys Props/Monte wearing purple tuxedo by Lanvin at Cloak

The Lipman’s home is a stately European manor home situated among a classic Bedford backdrop of lush greenery. Every inch of the inside and outside of the house, which has a history dating back to 1903, is meticulously maintained. The house itself includes elegant rooms with old-world wood paneling, carved molding and woodwork, fireplaces, and large French doors and windows. One specific piece of artwork, BEDFORD NEW CANAAN N O Vpiece / D E C by 2 0 2 1 above the& mantelpiece in the ball room, which draws particular attention, is a large multi-media Peter Tunney with the word GRATTITUDE, presiding over the space.
When asked to identify a few guests - dead or alive - they would have to a fantasy dinner party, Angelina immediately named, “Toni Morrison, because being introduced to her writing as a young girl, and realizing this is an extraordinary black woman producing works of great importance and beauty, was pivotal in my own development.” And then, asking if she “...could reserve the right to add to the guest list before the date of the party,” Angelina added “Audrey Hepburn, because I love her style and grace, and Billy Porter, because I

think Billy’s a true artist and really changed the narrative in fashion.” It’s worth noting that Billy Porter recently also signed with Republic Records. Monte added, “Martin Luther King, because he is one of those extraordinary beings who made the world a better place. Joe Namath, because he was the best. And I think the pioneer and legendary film producer and movie studio head, Louis B. Mayer, would be interesting. And definitely Nick Saban, head coach of the University of Alabama’s football team.” Whereupon Monte insists on a trip to the basement. Not to see the walls and walls of hundreds of gold and platinum records, but into his clean, white and attractive, but nonetheless clearly ‘man-cave’ of a room, featuring maybe a hundred authentic NCAA college football helmets, and an absolute shrine to college football. “Look,” Monte points out with obvious pleasure, “Saban signed this hat for me! I think running a college football team and running a record label share a lot of parallels. It starts with recruiting the best executives and coaches in order to build a powerful infrastructure. I admire and I’m inspired by Saban and his constant pursuit of excellence.” In many ways, the holidays tell you everything you need to know about the Lipman family. The Christmas tree is laden with Hanukkah menorahs and other beautiful tidings of happiness and joy - all illustrating a commitment to inclusivity. Monte is Jewish, and Angelina was born into an evangelical family, but say they’re raising the kids in an interfaith environment. Angelina says, “We’re blessed to have unparalleled harmony between our two large families. For the holidays, we start Christmas morning with a traditional Jewish lox and bagels breakfast and we end the evening with a Jamaican jerk turkey for Christmas dinner. Monte’s family brings Christmas gifts, while my family has developed a deep appreciation for the Jewish holidays...and particularly my mother who now makes potato latkes with a Jamaican flare. It sounds a little corny, but we’re one big happy family and the Holidays are our favorite time to get together.” For the Holidays everyone will gather at Monte and Angelina’s house...with beautiful tidings of happiness and joy. Delightful music indeed!

Tikun Olam… I have little mechanical skill, but remember finding myself cutting and laying PVC pipe in the devastated community of Marianna in Puerto Rico. Following Hurricane Maria, and the resulting destruction and agony, groups from Temple Shaaray Tefila traveled to Marianna 9 times, to do whatever we could to restore life and hope to a shaken community of people. We did lots of physical work during those days, but we also spent time meeting and speaking with people who had lost so much.
Repair the World An Ancient Message; Temple Shaaray Tefila’s Modern Mission
Tikun Olam… I recall years ago when our Temple congregation sponsored and settled a family from the former Soviet Union in our community. We provided the support and friendship they needed in their quest to become Americans. Today we marvel at how this family has flourished in our land of freedom. And now we look to the plight of Afghan refugees who are in need. Our congregation is collecting clothing and necessities, and we are working with various local houses of worship to sponsor an Afghan family and help them resettle in Westchester County.
Written By Rabbi David Greenberg, Rabbi Emeritus and Founding Rabbi of Temple Shaaray Tefila in Bedford
Tikun Olam is a Hebrew term which literally means ‘to repair the world’. It’s an ancient message - which Temple Shaaray Tefila makes its modern mission. It refers to deeds of caring and compassion which serve to repair some of the brokenness of our existence. Tikun Olam is our reaching out and strengthening those who go without so much that we tend to take for granted. Tikun Olam is feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, giving strength and hope to the weak, and uplifting those who have fallen in one way or another. Tikun Olam implies the opening of our eyes and our hearts, and acting to repair the suffering that so many people endure.
Tikun Olam.. It was close to 40 years ago when we convened a meeting of clergy with the goal of establishing a Food Pantry; Today, the Mt. Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry serves some 450 people per week, providing food in a dignified and sensitive way.
Tikun Olam… As we’ve done for many years, this Thanksgiving, and then again at Christmas, people of different religions, and some with no religious affiliation, will again come together in our community hall to cook, prepare and distribute some 3,000 meals on each holiday for those who would otherwise go without. It’s a beautiful sight: hundreds of people of different faiths working together to bring a little joy to those who are homeless and find themselves living in shelters throughout Westchester or otherwise lacking the means for a special dinner.

Tikun Olam… I look back on many trips to Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, in partnership with Bridges to Community, a wonderful organization whose mission is to build a more just and sustainable world through service learning and community development by engaging volunteers to work in developing countries. Teenagers and adults from Shaaray Tefila and from the Bedford Presbyterian Church traveled together to Central America to build modest houses in which families can live in safety and dignity. These volunteers returned after each trip with a deeper resolve to bring healing and hope to those who live with so little. Alli West, Shaaray Tefila’s Director of Member Engagement, reflected on her trips leading our congregations’ teens, saying “It’s striking how profoundly changed each of our teens is when we walk off the plane back in NY. These service-learning trips teach our youth the value of ‘giving back’ and being part of something bigger than themselves.”
Tikun Olam…. When our teens and adults participate in Midnight Runs, feeding & clothing the homeless and food insecure population in NYC. It has been very gratifying to see our teens engaging with those less fortunate.

Repair the World
Attention SUBARU ShoppersPlease read this important announcement...
Tikun Olam… Temple Shaaray Tefila has had a wonderful tradition called ‘Mitzvah Day’. (A mitzvah refers to a commandment of our Torah and is often understood as a ‘good deed’.) This is a multi-generational day when our community comes together to prepare food for those in need, knit & crochet blankets, and collect and sort clothing and canned goods for the Interfaith Food Pantry.
Due to unprecedented supply chain interruptions, new vehicle inventory will be at historical lows well into 2022. With this in mind, we strongly suggest you reserve your new SUBARU today. Please see us for current details.
Tikun Olam… Members of our congregation visit our local senior community with DOROT; we make cards and goody bags for Friends of Karen (serving children and families who are struggling with illness); we collect and distribute much needed personal care items for women and children who are victims of domestic violence in partnership with My Sister’s Place; we visit children at the Cottage School to bring some joy into their lives, and; we raise awareness for the ASPCA (and we always have a dog present for adoption!).
IMPREZA ASCENT
Tikun Olam… Alongside 16 houses of worship, Shaaray Tefila is a founding member of the Emergency Shelter Partnership. Throughout the winter months, we welcome and shelter the homeless in our respective buildings, providing meals along with a safe and warm place to sleep.
CROSSTREK
Tikun Olam… Our congregation has provided over 28,000 sandwiches over the course of the pandemic – and we’re still going strong. We’ve been preparing sandwiches every day, at home, which are picked up and delivered to the Broadway Manor Homeless Shelter in Yonkers and the Community Center of Northern Westchester.
Used Car Prices Never Higher -
WE NEED YOUR TRADE
Our Social Action Chair, and longtime Temple Shaaray Tefila congregant, Richard Leroy, said it well: “The act of repairing the world creates ripples in our congregation and it spreads…. as people get involved, we create community here at the same time as we help communities outside of our own walls. I’m not a ‘religious’ man, but my code is tikun olam. For me, one of the most important highlights of Yom Kippur, our holiest day of the year, is our High Holy Day food drive which provides thousands of pounds of food for the hungry.” As I look back upon my 45 years as a Rabbi, I have come to know that such caring actions are indeed the highest expression of religion. Housing the homeless and remembering the poor and the needy are moral obligations central to all of our religious traditions. Something great is expected of each of us, and I’ve learned that we each become richer the more of ourselves we give away. Too few understand that the ultimate purpose of Judaism is to make the world more humane...and that’s what we try to do at Shaaray Tefila. 98

The Best
COFFEE in
BEDFORD BY Casey Kaplan
PHOTOGRAPHY: Frances Isaac
Nic and James Stephenson moved to Bedford two years ago from England, and opened up oHHo, the adorable shop in the little red building on Court Road, the road that leads to Bedford Village Elementary School. The shop is a trendy respite from everyday life, filled with seeminglyeffortless but perfectly decorated happy pops of color, lots of plants, and a line of all natural CBD products. The couple found the benefits of CBD through an illness of their own, which led them to open oHHo...and oHHo has taken off! But what does this have to do with the best coffee in Bedford? Well, as Nic tried to spread the word to the community about the new shop and offering, she spent most weekends selling oHHo CBD products at the John Jay Farmers Market out of a little yellow truck called Buttercup. A self-proclaimed “non-morning person,” Nic discovered no one was selling coffee at the Farmers Market and figured, “what a missed opportunity.” Although Nic tried reaching out to some roasters to form some kind of collaboration, as a start-up from a small town, most didn’t pay her much attention. So she and James decided to do it themselves, with the help of a good friend, Esteban. That is, they started their own line of coffee…. Flying Coffee…And now, it’s taken off too! The coffee does not contain CBD, although adding a drop or two is of course an option. It’s from a single farm in Columbia. Most coffee you’ll taste is imported to the U.S. as beans, and then factory roasted in the U.S. Flying Coffee is actually roasted in Columbia before it’s imported, making the flavor more robust and authentic - only possible because of the smallbatch process. ...So now, the little red oHHo CBD shop also offers brewed coffees (hot and iced), cappuccinos, and lattes, and ground and roasted beans, all in a fresh and relaxing environment.

It goes without saying that the pandemic has had unparalleled impacts on nearly every facet of our lives. Even with 2022 fast approaching, we’re still feeling the effects of the worldwide shutdown so tangibly. In the height of the uncertainty, isolation, and confusion of the global health crisis, many of us relied on our homes more so than we could have ever predicted. As remote living became our new normal, we began using our homes in ways we never anticipated: the kitchen table became a fully equipped office setup, the mudroom became a disinfecting station, the guest bedroom became a home gym, the playroom became a remote day school, and so on.

While the disruption of 2020 is slowly fading away and the familiarity of daily life is coming into view, the concept of ‘pandemic-proofing’ in architecture is becoming increasingly fashionable. How can we change the way we build now to anticipate the future? We sat down (albeit virtually) with an industry expert, Chuck Hilton - the renowned architect and co-founder of Charles Hilton Architects - to discuss the emerging trends in residential home design. Charles Hilton Architects specializes in the finest quality custom residential architecture, sustainable design and waterfront projects. Equipped, CONNECTED, & ENABLED Perhaps the most obvious trend identified here is the need for suitable working and learning setups in the home. “Even after the pandemic is over and businesses revert to more normal operations, I expect that working and learning from home will continue to be significantly more prevalent than it was previously,” said Hilton. Designing a home with a workstation poised for a full- or part-time remote position requires careful attention at all scales, from room orientation to capture views and light, down to the specifics of choosing comfortable and practical furniture. More important than all of that, however, is having the proper infrastructure in place to support a seamless home office. “Increasingly, our office is integrating mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems down to the fraction of an inch to ensure all the conduit, cabling, and technology are properly accounted for and to reduce surprises and compromises in construction. Building workspaces that are soundproof and acoustically isolated from the noise of the house is critical, particularly if multiple family members are working from home simultaneously.” Hilton explained.
One of the most stringent demands that quarantining put on our homes is the need for flexibility in our built environment. Having the luxury of space gives us the opportunity to adapt our surroundings and allows us to have room to grow. Where excess space is not an option, building in versatility to your home design is key both to use the space you have efficiently, and to pivot as your needs change over time. As an effect, Hilton has noticed “...the previously very popular open plans are still popular but are giving way to more defined plans with rooms that can be closed off for privacy.” Using pocket doors as a tool allows spaces to be designed to feel open and connected while maintaining the ability to have privacy and quiet when necessary. Considering adaptability while designing or renovating your home not only allows you to plan for the unexpected, but also affords the ability to consider how your needs in your home will change over time. The concept of ‘aging-in-place’, or planning our homes to be comfortable for all stages of life, is becoming a norm.
Spacious, FLEXIBLE, & ADAPTABLE
Hilton continued, “Another layer to the flexibility of a home is creating transitional indoor/outdoor spaces: greenhouses, pergolas, trellises, gazebos, loggias, or even a sliding glass wall. Finding a way to bridge the interior and exterior can allow us to bring fresh air into the home and encourages us to extend our enjoyment of the outdoors into the inclement months.” This charming limonaia (image to the left) designed by Charles Hilton Architects to be nestled into the treeline says it all. 106

Healthy, DAYLIT, & CLEAN
Durable, RELIABLE, & LOW-MAINTENANCE
While wellness and health have been leading topics at the forefront of contemporary building science for the past several decades, the pandemic cemented the importance of well-considered details, materials, and construction practices in making a space healthy for inhabitants. Indoor air quality is one of the major components of a healthy home. Especially given how much time is spent indoors, properly ventilating and eliminating pollutants from the air in our homes is essential. Working with an architect to prevent opportunities for mold growth in exterior wall assemblies, specify low-VOC finishes, choose high-performance HVAC systems, install HEPA filters, and make the right choices to prioritize long-term health, can all have a major impact on the indoor air quality of your home.
As the cost of construction materials surge and supply chains are stretched to their limits, homes that are built to last with lower maintenance are looking especially appealing. Choosing cladding, roofing, door, and window products upfront that are durable and reliable can save money in the long run. Not to mention, more resilient materials mean less dependency on replacements, repairs, and maintenance - which reduces stress down the line. On top of this, “With sea levels rising and the frequency of severe storms seemingly increasing,” Chuck Hilton said his practice is “...fortifying many of our homes to protect against natural disasters. With generators, off-grid power sources, resilient exterior envelopes, and strategic landscape design, homes can be far less vulnerable to storms than in the past.”
Sustainable,
Considering that the building and construction industry is a major contributor to waste and pollution across the country, many homeowners are becoming increasingly conscious of the burden we all share to make responsible decisions. Hilton said many of their “...new projects are super energy efficient with LED lighting, high-efficiency appliances, tankless water heaters, high-performance glazing systems, and smart-house controls. Some have geothermal HVAC or electric heat pumps at the home.”
Equally important to the air we breathe is the water we drink. According to Hilton, some people do not realize that “...many areas have well water that contains mineral deposits that are unpleasant to drink and stain indoor and outdoor surfaces over time. Even municipal water sources contain unwanted contaminants. We are typically filtering drinking water of all types and sometimes using whole house filtration on certain well water.”
Choosing materials that have lower embodied energy and reduced carbon footprints can greatly reduce the impact a home has on the environment. Some new homes go even a step beyond evaluating materials on their sustainability at installation and look all the way to the ‘end-of-life’ potential, or the ability for a material to be recycled or reused after the eventual demolition of the home.
Designing homes to embrace our natural circadian rhythms is another factor of a healthy home. Orienting buildings to capture natural light, positioning windows in rooms to diffuse daylight, and even using calibrated LED bulbs to simulate the hue of daytime/nighttime cycles on dark days can make a noticeable difference in alertness and mood throughout the day.

BY Anna Urbanska
In October I celebrated my 20 year anniversary of arriving in the US from my childhood home in Poland. I remember that day very well. I boarded the plane with a big smile and excitement about my adventure that awaited me. I was a very young and innocent person who didn’t know how big a step and what a change I was about to experience. I came to the US not knowing anyone and not having much of any support. Looking back now, it’s an amazing and interesting journey I’ve had! My name is Anna Urbanska, I was born in Legnica, Poland, where I spent my childhood with my mother, a single parent, who gave me lots of freedom to make my own decisions and become independent at a very early age. I
was always a very happy and friendly girl. I was brave, strong and had lots of positive energy. I loved going to school, playing outside, meeting new friends and traveling to different parts of Poland and countries in Europe. I grew up during the Soviet Era in Poland when technology wasn’t available, so my hobbies were playing classical music on the piano and flute, and helping homeless animals in my town. I was always helping my mom around the house, taking care of my younger brother, and working during my free time to earn my money and save every bit for my trips. I remember that my favorite things as a child were learning new things at school, getting good grades and making my mom happy.
Initially I was planning to leave my home in Poland only for one year. I had a choice to stay in Poland and study in an Academy of Music where I got accepted to a Jazz performance program or study English and experience an American culture in the US. I was very curious how it feels to be visiting places that I have seen on tv growing up. All the images from movies and shows I watched were beautiful, fun and adventurous. I felt like flying to the US became my dream and I finally got a chance to experience it. Saying goodbye to my mom and my younger brother who was only 6 years old at that time was very difficult. I remember that we all had lots of tears. But I had my mind set that everything will be fine and I will make them proud. I knew that I will see them soon again. I came to the US to study English at the age of 19. I arrived at the JFK airport and started working as a live-in nanny in Stamford CT - which gave me a feeling of safety and a nice home environment. My first few weeks in this new big world felt like a very happy vacation. I didn’t worry much that I don’t know anybody because meeting new people felt very easy and natural to me. I learned very quickly how to have a simple conversation in English and I was lucky I could understand people very well. I always had a smile on my face and felt like everyone around me was very nice and helpful.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Rhonda Spevak
I committed to my job as a nanny and worked very hard to not disappoint the family. I was always very patient, loving, gentle and caring. I quickly adjusted to my new living situation, daily tasks and driving to new places. I earned trust, respect and understanding from everyone around me. My free time I dedicated on making new friends and finding things to do that made me happy. I found parks, libraries, places with music. I noticed all the diverse cultures from around the world. I got information about Polish places and communities. It was very nice to meet my first Polish friends but also to meet friends from different countries who came to the US to study just like me. I visited the nearby schools and chose my college program. I had to be a full-time student in order to maintain the legal status on the international student visa. I didn’t know right away that I will study the exercise science program. One day when I was 20 years old I participated for the first time in a group fitness class. The instructor was this beautiful woman with long dark hair and a big smile. I loved the whole experience and how it made me feel.

I was so impressed that in my mind I said to myself that one day I would like to teach a fitness class and exercise with people to help them feel better and stronger. The days were always full of activities between work, school, friends and studying. The first few years went by so fast. I communicated with my family by writing letters at the beginning then I discovered a phone card that I could buy and call to speak with my mom. I was very happy to hear her voice and tell her that I am ok and I am able to manage my life here. She was always proud of me that I am so independent and good with people. I didn’t want to disappoint her so I held my sadness of missing Poland in the back of my mind and concentrated on surviving in my life in the US on my own. Not having family here was painful but if I didn’t think about it I could stay more positive and put my energy and effort in my education and career. I never liked to be sad or complain that I am not having much. I feel like I always have everything I need as long as I am healthy and I have a purpose in what I do everyday.
A NEW CANAAN IMMIGRANT’S STORY

I needed to work a lot in order to support myself and pay for my school. From the beginning I could give piano lessons and then, once I became fluent in English, I started my education in exercise sciences and then, in 2004, I began my career as a personal trainer and fitness instructor. I also volunteered for many years to teach swimming to children at the YMCA. I had my mind set to always say ‘yes’ to any work opportunity to gain experience to improve my professional knowledge and language skills. This work was enjoyable and rewarding. I continued my fitness education to gain as much knowledge as I could to provide a very professional service and education to my clients and students. Besides my college education, I got certified in multiple fitness categories. I worked with one-on-one clients and started teaching my first group exercise classes. This was the most difficult part of my life in the US. I was going to school and working full-time. The entire time, I was a full-time international student and did not travel to see my family.
It wasn’t always easy, but thanks to the relationships I developed with friends and families I have worked for, it made it possible. I knew at an early age that if I was a good, compassionate and hardworking person who cares about others and stays out of trouble, my life will be easier, happier and safer. I ultimately graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from UConn and a Masters degree from Manhattanville College, concentrating on Exercise Science and Physical Education. There were limitations to what I could do as an international student. It took lots of patience, hard work and sacrifices to get my US residence status. It also affected my approach to work. I was always open to every opportunity that came my way. I appreciated all my small earnings and I learnt the value of all my efforts. I was surrounded by people who were at the same situation as mine who became my friends and gave me support. Being an immigrant taught me lots of respect, tolerance and persistence. I knew when I started something I couldn’t give up because I didn’t know if I could be given a second chance. I survived coming to the US with nothing, I took advantage of every opportunity, I follow and respect the rules and earned the status of US citizen! That whole process shaped the person who I am today. In 2009 I received my resident status and was able to return to visit Poland for the first time. Finally seeing my family was one of the happiest moments in my life. It is very difficult to describe it in words but I remember that every time I hugged my family member I didn’t want to let go and shed lots of happy tears. I spent beautiful time with my mother and my siblings, grandmothers, cousins

and I also reconnected with my father and my step mom, who were not in my life when I was growing up. During the visit I recognized how truly loving, caring and giving my family is. The family bond felt so strong that even being so far away from them for so long didn’t change the fact that they will always be my home and have my back. I made a promise to myself that I will visit them every year. Now I have a good fitness practice. I do private training at home and at Halo in New Canaan and give classes at the YMCA. My practice includes children, young athletes, senior population, patients with cancer and diabetes condition, special needs population, as well as any one who needs help improving their health and quality of life. I get great pleasure from promoting a healthy lifestyle through various disciplines including yoga, strength training, cardio training and activities not only inside the gym but also the outdoors, like hiking, tennis, biking, running and swimming. I motivate my clients with a very positive attitude, patience, understanding, and my personal stories and I share with them the information they like to know about exercise, stretching techniques, diet and mental attitude. I feel blessed to have developed such a strong bond and relationship with my clients and students some have been clients for over 13 years. I feel very fortunate working as a health and fitness educator. I discovered that being active and eating healthy food makes me feel great freedom and joy. I made my work become my vocation and avocation.

On a personal level, I am living in a beautiful town of New Canaan where I spend most of my time and enjoy the community. I love to have time visiting my great friends, going out to restaurants, listening to live music and dancing, and I volunteer teaching English to immigrants in many different settings. I am so lucky that I could meet and connect with so many wonderful people in the US. Despite the fact that I am living my life here without my family, I don’t feel like I am alone because I receive lots of love and support from my friends and at work every day. I am thankful that I developed such a strong passion for fitness because it gives me the education, motivation and joy to stay always active, healthy and happy. I feel very fortunate that I am able to do what I love for my profession. I will continue sharing my story and positive attitude with everyone I meet. And I’m proud to call myself American!

If you are considering scheduling a 3D mammogram at CareMount’s newly renovated women’s imaging suite at the Yorktown location, you may have questions about the test. Here are some frequently asked questions.
What is a 3D mammography breast exam? 3D mammography is a diagnostic tool that is used together with traditional 2D imaging to build a finely detailed 3D reconstruction of breast tissue. Radiologists can then scroll through all the images much like a book — one page at a time — to gain a better understanding of your breast health.
What are the benefits of 3D mammography? Sometimes breast tissue can overlap, which when viewed only with conventional 2D mammography, may look like an abnormal area. Examining multiple images with 2D and 3D techniques allows the radiologist to view tissue more clearly, making it easier to make an accurate assessment and less likely the need for additional views. Abnormalities may be easier to see and evaluate, making it possible to identify cancers at earlier stages when they are most treatable.
What sets CareMount’s women’s imaging apart? Immediate results! Dr. Virna Lisi-DeMartino, chair of the department of radiology for CareMount Medical said “Yorktown Breast Imaging Suite offers a calming, relaxing and beautiful setting for patients to come for their breast cancer screening as we understand how these appointments in particular may be anxiety provoking. The on-site breast imager will discuss results and answer any questions or concerns the patient may have. At CareMount, we feel it is important for patients to have the opportunity to understand their imaging and take an active role in their care.”
What should I expect during the 3D mammography exam?

Winter is the coziest season. Sweats and a sweater. Curled up with a good book or the latest B&NC Mag, and a warm cup of...whatever. ...One’s thoughts, invariably, turn to...closets. Yes, closets. According to a study conducted by The Telegraph, most women spend an average of a year in front of their closets in the course of their lifetime, or an average of about fifteen minutes a day. While they are, metaphorically, where you keep your skeletons and ‘closet’ your emotions, they must also serve as the bank of you and the fountain from which you in all your personna may emerge. Believe me when I tell you that it may look to my husband like my mind is somewhere else, or in the clouds, but it’s more often than he could imagine...in the closet. N O V / D E C

Closets are the most intimate part of a home. They may too often be the repository for piles of laundry - or the new clothes you just bought that you haven’t told your spouse about, maybe even hiding under that laundry. They are almost always a store room for our most treasured and personal possessions. ...To reorganize or to renovate, that is the question. Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the continued clutter, or to take arms and have the closet of which I dream. To die for, to sleep peacefully nearby... On a mission for B&NC Mag to find a few of the most luxe closets around, I set off with California Closets - the preeminent closet customization company in the region - as my guide. The pre-existing closet in this space was very dark and covered the windows. The clients wanted to have it all gutted and revamped using a lighter material for a more feminine feel to the closet. By exposing the windows and incorporating a white textured finish, the entire space received a refresher and made everything more bright and airy.

Immediately upon entering the room you feel like you’ve stepped through the wardrobe door to Narnia or some other wild dream world, complete with tufted poufs, designer shoes, and gowns fit for a princess. As I brushed over the plush white sheepskin, I immediately spotted the window bench, which adds a uniquely inviting component, making me think it would be the perfect spot to even hide-away from a busy house. “Maximizing storage was key,” explained Melissa, the California Closets designer who worked on this project, “...she had lots of dresses that we decided to showcase through clear glass doors to allow for visibility, and also a neater look and feel.” BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

The inspiration for this spectacular space is that of a dressing room, rather than a storage space. Somehow, California Closets managed to pull off both in this space - by including lots of open shelving and display cases, but also many hidden compartments and a builtin hutch to draw the eye in immediately upon entering the room. LED lighting and glass detailing give the space a boutique-like feel, and the grey wood finish gives off a warm and rich aesthetic. BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

I think it’s common to fantasize about taking an entirely separate bedroom in the house and turning it into a closet for the primary bedroom… and that’s just the fantasy that was realized in this Bedford home, after the couple made it their full time residence during the pandemic. The ceiling angles and beams were not ideal, and presented a challenge for California Closets to work around in the renovation process; but California Closet’s ability to customize the heights and widths of each component made the space not only workable, but even superb for the conversion. The closet was designed with specific items in mind - to allow for a spectacular bag collection to be highlighted, and to incorporate wishlist features like a vanity, massive island, and an immense amount of mirroring. All while leaving the existing windows for natural light and a beautiful view.

PICALI FINE JEWELRY ONE-OF-A-KIND
...And short of a redo of the architecture of the closet, every closet could use a little zhush. No matter the physical design, the arrangement of personal artifacts, collections, wardrobe and accessories may be improved to enhance the look of the space. And reducing clutter is...always a good thing!
Fine Handmade Jewelry is the concept that “Picali Fine Jewelry” boutique brings to Greenwich, CT.
Although each of the ladies who were kind enough to let us invade had their closets in pretty, pretty, pretty (as Larry David might say) tip-top condition, we nevertheless brought in Jenna Haefelin, an undisputed queen of closets, to help these closets be their best selves for this photoshoot.
JENNA HAEFELIN SPIFF
Jenna started her business, Spiff, at just twenty-three, when she realized that a lot of people had a need for some organization. Jenna has built a team of experts that are capable of overhauling any space to add functionality, and are capable of elevating the aesthetic in even the highest tier spaces. “A lot of times people think they’re already organized, or that their closet looks amazing, but in reality there are often more efficient ways for them to be set up - allowing for them to see more of their available wardrobe and better enjoy the room,” Jenna explains, “I call it leveling up.” Although every client and project is different, most closet jobs for Jenna include color groupings. “We also bring a lot of symmetry into the spaces… this is an art to me and I want the result to be beautiful,” Jenna explained. Tactile components are often as important as color. The Spiff team mixes and matches textures to accentuate depth, as if the hanging racks were a painter’s canvas.
Picali Fine Jewelry offers contemporary style jewelry made of solid gold, precious gemstones, and diamonds. Each piece is exclusively designed and handcrafted by Jewelry Designer Alicia Andros at her home studio in Bedford, NY. Alicia’s bespoke jewelry was featured in magazines such as Elle Slovenia, Tmrwmag, Weekly Style and in New York and Paris Fashion Week.

Heather Gaudio Fine Art
November 20th, 2021– January 8th, 2022
Light, transparency and reflection will take your breath away this month at Heather Gaudio Fine Art in downtown New Canaan. “Ann Gardner: Expanding the Perception of Light,” the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery, will feature a range of works expressing her life-long exploration of light, color, pattern, and volume. After experimenting with different materials and processes, Gardner’s artistic enquiry landed her with the one material that has become her signature medium: glass. Known to be one of the most ancient man-made materials, glass allows Gardner to not only stretch the boundaries of its physical properties, but it also gives her the “honesty,” as she puts it, to express that which interests her. Gardner’s sculptural works are presented in a range of formats, shapes, and scales. The artist hand-cuts colored glass into tiny mosaic pieces and assembles them onto steel armature structures. These come in a variety of forms, such as curved geometric shapes, tubular ovals, waved panels, star bursts or round compositions created in a series. Their volumes protrude into space and recede into themselves, thereby allowing for additional flickering of light, color, and reflection to take place. Some of the sculptures are mounted onto walls while others are free-standing or suspended from the ceiling. The artist is also known for creating large-scale, sitespecific installations that not only bring attention to the works themselves but also to the environments they occupy. Understanding the physical space, who uses it and for what purpose informs her decisions on design and visual outcome. Gardner uses glass in a very precise way, understanding that its very nature is ageless, and the works will transcend time. These larger scale commissions can be presented in the form of sculptures or mosaic murals. Cognizant of the physical space and light that surround them, Gardner mindfully and carefully selects the materials and palette that is best suited for each setting. The spaces become activated with reflections, transparency, and light.

The spectrum of Gardner’s palette is broad, with colors ranging from soft golds, silvers and blues to dynamic reds, bright greens, and yellows. The exhibition at Heather Gaudio Fine Art will feature new mosaic wall-mounted sculptural works that emphasize pattern, reflection, shifting light and color. Also showcased, are a new series of hand-blown glass orbs that are less structured than her mosaic work. For Gardner, this new glass orb series poses a different way to think about the material. She wanted to relate to the glass as a material that “holds a breath.” As she states, “this is really the only process where one can create a thin barrier between what is inside and what is outside.” Gardner directs the molten glass as the orbs get inflated with air, deliberately keeping the shapes off center. Typically, the objective of blown glass is to keep it centered and controlled, creating as perfect concentric circles as possible. Her intention is freer which allows her to create wonderfully organic shapes. The innately beautiful bubbles in soft blues, greys and gold can hang from the ceiling or can be free-standing. They direct the viewer’s attention to transparency and the light beyond their physical edges. Arranged in clusters, their clarity becomes more nuanced when they overlap each other. This series of orbs was showcased at the Boise Art Museum in Idaho last year to great critical acclaim. Also featured in the exhibition at the gallery is a new work on paper Gardner created in 2020 when working with glass in the studio was not available to her. Gardner took to walking around Lake Washington during those months and she became interested in the translucency and glow of light on the watery surface. She translated this experience into a two-dimensional expression by applying watercolor on silver-leaf paper. The metallic surface rendered the depth and luminous effect she was seeking, and then creased the paper to evoke the texture of water. This multi-sheet work is arranged in a grid and can be extended to a larger scale if so desired. Gardner has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work has been featured in many solo and group shows around the country. In addition to her large-scale public and corporate commissions, her work is included in the collections of the National Museum of American Art, the Detroit Institute of the Arts, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Corning Museum of Glass, to name a few.

ALL THE WORLD’S
A STAGE
BY Elise Walters Enter ‘stage right’, Susan Tracy of House Whisperers. Susan has been ‘staging’, the practice of bringing in furniture and décor from rugs and artwork to bed linen and cutlery, to enhance a home’s attractiveness to buyers, for over 20 years. From grand estates to fixer-uppers, Susan has staged thousands of homes in Fairfield and Westchester Counties and knows first-hand the power staging has in simplifying and expediting the buying and selling process. “When a home is staged, it broadens marketability,” says Susan. “We provide a canvas that is appealing to buyers from all walks of life. By removing clutter, items that may feel overly personal, and taste specific furniture, we broaden the home’s appeal.” Susan taps into her extensive collection of furnishings from leading home designers including Ralph Lauren, Restoration Hardware, Holly Hunt, Christian Liaigre, Mitchell Gold, Baker, Knoll, Design Within Reach, and more, to customize each home. The idea is to
“TRANSCEND ALL DEMOGRAPHICS”, according to Susan. And in the process, she eliminates the guesswork and stress so many homeowners face. The proof is in the numbers.
Because “all the world’s a stage”, the prospect of putting a house on the market is a daunting experience for most, downright panic inducing for many. Every realtor will tell you, ‘It’s not personal, it’s business’, but who wants the strangers combing through your home, critiquing that yellow bathroom tile you meant to update but didn’t have the time, or if we’re being honest, the cash? The whispers of ‘What were they thinking?’ about those chairs gifted by your wellmeaning mother-in-law. The fact is, when you open your door to what feels like endless showings and open houses, you open the door to public scrutiny. And most important, your decorating may make it so the buyer can’t envision their own picture and walk away as just another ‘no thank you’.

ACCORDING TO A 2021 PROFILE OF HOME STAGING BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® RESEARCH GROUP:
82%
of buyers’ agents said staging a home made it easier for a buyer to visualize the property as a future home
53%
of seller’s agents saw a decrease in time staged homes were on the market vs non staged homes
WHILE STAGING IS NOT ALWAYS NEEDED, HERE ARE THE TOP 3 REASONS A HOME MAY REQUIRE IT:
23%
of seller’s agents reported an increase of one to five percent of the dollar value of the home once staged, and 15% of seller’s agents saw an increase in dollar value of between six and ten percent
AFTER
In a separate survey of 13,000 staged homes by the Real Estate Staging Association, it was reported that homes that were staged pre-listing averaged 23 days on the market compared to non-staged homes which averaged 143 days on the market. Hannelore Kaplan - and her team Hannelore & Co. at William Raveis Real Estate - is one of the top producing real estate agents in Fairfield County. Hannelore recommends staging to many of her clients, as it comes with a positive return on investment. Hannelore says, “Contrary to what people think, staging doesn’t have to break the bank, and you don’t have to do the whole house. You can cherry-pick the focal parts of the home where people see themselves spending the most time – the family room, kitchen, living room, office and master bedroom, for example. Staging can range in price depending on what’s required and at first blush, spending something like $15,000 on furniture you can’t keep may seem wasteful. But if that means you can increase the asking price by 10%, or get 6% over ask, on a 2 or 3 million dollar home, you are walking away with a significant profit. Put in that context, staging can often be a no-brainer.”
BEFORE
And dollars and cents aside, staging can really be an emotional relief to homeowners who are eager to sell, but don’t know where to begin. Some sellers are crippled when faced with packing up the physical belongings that carry emotional weight. Having a third party enter the scene, like The House Whisperers, with a seasoned perspective on what’s appealing to buyers, simplifies the path forward. A professional stager can have key rooms or an entire house packed up and replaced with fresh furniture in a matter of days. BEFORE

1.
TASTE SPECIFICITY OR CLUTTER
Buyers want to visualize themselves living in a home. This can be made difficult by personal mementos everywhere or décor and furniture specific to a particular time period. For example, a home may be an ‘antique’ and filled with antique furniture top to bottom, but because of the way the house is furnished - and not because of when it was built - buyers may not engage, as they assume the house is not updated enough or can’t envision the modern style they desire.
2.
FLAWS
3.
TIMING / A NEED TO SELL
Not every house can be showcase worthy. And when there are obviously outdated elements like kitchens and baths, sometimes these houses need an edge to get noticed. Photography of staged rooms is eye-catching and drawsin buyers. A buyer may be willing to overlook some of the outdated surfaces if they experience some ‘wow’ factor via staging - in a main living space.
First impressions are critical, and some sellers can’t afford to have their homes languish on the market. When buyers need to put their best foot forward and fast, staging is the answer. This also makes the showing and the moving process easier for the sellers. With most of their belongings, other than some essentials, packed-up and in storage, preparation for showings is a breeze and everything is ready to go to the next home.

he Tsengs are not your typical New Canaanites... T though they’ve been residents for a decade. They’re a Taiwanese American family who still seem very
old world. Three generations, living together in one albeit 19,000 square foot - house. They interact with each other and with the outside world with a kind of calm and quiet, respect and dignity, and reserve and mutual regard that’s reminiscent of Asian traditions and generations past. They are a little awkwardly formal. Their hobby is philanthropy, supporting museums and various educational causes. Their residence is only one of a half-dozen homes in New Canaan that they presently own, and now they’re listing it for sale as they continue to trade and invest in New Canaan real estate. As a constant, they are committed to the broad and most altruistic mission of educating people about people, with a particular focus on the benefits of free trade, multiculturalism and education.

Chris, the 79 year old patriarch of the Tseng family, is a small man of giant stature. He’s soft-spoken and respectful, even to the point of being demure; seems to be still thinking in Mandarin and coming up with the words to express himself in English, and; has the smile of a man who’s starting to look back - and who’s happy about what he’s done. ...But his gentle demeanor conceals a man who is still sharp as a tack, charming, strong, and most probably the smartest and most worldly guy in the room...and his life story is remarkable!... Studying business administration, Chris was first in his class at Tamkang University in Taipei. While serving mandatory military service during the period of the Vietnam War, he was assigned to the airborne unit as a paratrooper, participated in 47 jumps, and received valedictorian recognition. He started his career in Taiwan as a manufacturer and exporter of door handles and locksets and other hardware in a category of goods known as ‘security systems’. He was among the first expats from Asia traversing the Pacific to build up cross-border trade between the U.S. and Asia. In the late 1970s, he moved to California, leaving the family behind in Taiwan, to start what would become Ampac, which he would grow into being a major supplier to FEMA, big box retailers and other large corporations.

Not pictured: Alice Tseng, Steven’s sister, is a Professor of Art & Architecture at Boston University. She has written and lectured extensively specializing on the art and architecture of Japan, including on transnational and transcultural connections between Japan and EuroAmerica. After getting her PhD at Harvard and studying at Tokyo University, she’s received fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, National Gallery of Art, and J. Paul Getty Foundation, among others.
In 1984, Chris sent for his family: his wife Iris, and his two children, Steven and Alice, who immigrated to the U.S. and moved into Palos Verdes Estates, California. However gilded the experience must have been, Steven remembers, “I was 10. We didn’t speak a word of English and my father sent us to public school and expected us not just to fit right in, but to be the best! We used to joke that we were learning sign language, because the first words we learned were STOP, DON’T WALK, WATCH YOUR STEP, and McDONALDS. It wasn’t easy, but we worked really hard to learn English, assimilate, and focued on our school work. I was one of only two Asian kids in my elementary school, and although we were always made to feel welcomed and I had friends in school, we never really fit in or felt like part of the ‘IN’ group. Throughout middle and high school, I tried to be nice and quiet and patient, and basically stay out of the limelight.” Steven went on to Dartmouth, and the Tuck Business School at Dartmouth for his MBA, and remains devoted to his alma mater. He sits on the Boards of Tuck and the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth, and the Tsengs have: established a scholarship for the study of Asian culture and art, and; provided significant support to the Hood Museum’s Bernstein Center for Object Study, where they donated the Tseng Family Study Gallery in 2019, donated a Study Room at Bryne Hall at Dartmouth and; most recently, renovated a classroom in Tuck Hall, which will be completed and dedicated next year. The Hood Museum is well known for its collection of Native American art and has a 146

Native American Art Curator, Jami Powell, who is one of only a couple Native Americans in such a capacity in the U.S. When the Tsengs learned that the Hood was looking for a piece by Cara Romero, the Tsengs acquired it and lent it to the Hood. Steven explains, “Dartmouth is a special place - even though, much to my surprise, it started with a swim test and a weeklong hike for Freshman Orientation. At Dartmouth I was encouraged and inspired to learn art, history and culture as an econ major. At Dartmouth, education is paramount and learning is honored. I learned so much from my professors and fellow classmates, and feel that education is the key to our understanding of each other. I studied abroad in Japan, was a member of a fraternity, was tapped to join a senior society, and had college buddies who remain close friends, but still I was one of only a few Asians in my class. Before I went to Dartmouth I was sheltered and used to stick to the people I knew, but at Dartmouth I was forced to interact with people outside of my circle. I lived in a triple in the dorm, with one roommate from Montana and another from New Haven.”

Steven started his career in DC with a three year stint right out of college at Price Waterhouse. That’s when he and Anne (nee Wan) met. “The host at a cocktail party was trying to introduce us and Steven was oblivious. But when we got to talk, I was attracted immediately, and apparently the feeling was mutual. I was born in Texas and grew up in New Jersey and Chicago, and was an Econ Major at the University of Chicago, where my grandfather studied as a chemical engineer. We were both working in DC when we met, so when Steven took an assignment in Tokyo, I deferred my admission to Sloane at MIT, and we went,” Anne recalls. “And, to convince her to join me in Japan, I proposed at the Capitol Mall,” Steven adds proudly. They lived in Boston while Steven was at Tuck and Anne was at Sloane, and then moved to New York when Steven interned at Goldman and Anne at Morgan Stanley. Steven takes up the narrative: “We were married in the summer of 2001. I had been recruited to join KPMG. I was supposed to be on a flight to Helsinki on 9/11, and Anne had joined Merrill and was working in the World Financial Center that day. After working apart for a year, we decided to move together to Finland, where I became the Head of Financial Advisory Services for KPMG, and Anne got a job at the Helsinki School of Economics. I was the youngest person to make equity partner at KPMG, but in Finland I was the only Asian and one of very few non-Finns in the company. When I joined the Board of KPMG Finland, my Chairman changed the official language from Finnish to English to accommodate me. Then in 2005, we moved to Shanghai, as I was tasked to build a practice for KPMG in China and became KPMG’s Regional Managing Partner for the Asia Pacific for Global Transfer Pricing Services. In Shanghai, Anne started working for PayPal, and she’s been in the fintech space ever since - presently N O V Stripe.” / D E C 2 0 2 1 with

Tseng matriarch, Iris, is an elegant woman who has weaker eyesight as she ages and lives at the side of Chris, her husband of 50 years. She’s still a part of every meeting, dedication and mission the Tsengs host or attend, and it’s clear she still ‘sees’ more than most, and is still the quiet advisor in Chris’ ear.
Returning Stateside, and after almost ten years back with PwC, as Global Value Chain Transformation Leader and then Head of the Asia Business Center, based in New York, Steven, 48, is now the Principal Economist of the international law firm of Baker McKenzie. This is interesting not just because the position and what Steven deals with, and does, is fascinating in and of itself, but also because Steven is a leading executive at one of the world’s leading law firms - and yet he is not a lawyer; and though he was previously an equity Partner at KPMG and PwC, two of the world’s leading accounting and advisory firms neither is he an accountant. Steven is able to get a room full of the smartest and most experienced lawyers, accountants and advisors to work seamlessly together! About originally becoming New Canaanites, Steven recalls: “We were considering moving to the U.S. after our son Ethan was born in L.A. in 2007, and so we needed to find the best place to live. I figured...Jeff Immelt, the head of GE, and a Dartmouth grad, lives in New Canaan...and there’s a high concentration of Dartmouth alums living in New Canaan....and Dennis Nally, the then Global Chairman of PwC lived in New Canaan...and there’s a high concentration of CEOs in New Canaan. This was the highest level of endorsement for New Canaan for me. In 2012, when we came to visit, it really reminded me of Hanover, New Hampshire, where I went to college. And it seemed like a rare location so close to New York City, yet where you could have property and live in a bucolic setting. Our criteria included great schools and a growing community, where folks believe in raising their family, 148
BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN
and that will continue to attract new families in the future. New Canaan has parks and schools and services that will continue to attract new families in the future. Anne serves on the Board of the Library, and the Library is one of the Town resources that makes New Canaan so special. It was a great choice and we’re very happy here. We liked it here so much and felt so comfortable that we convinced my parents to move here and move-in with us. Ethan is in ninth grade at New Canaan High. He has tons of friends. He plays a little lacrosse and tennis, and has plenty of opportunities here. And this area only became more valuable because of how livable it was, even during the pandemic.” But as for why the Tsengs have accumulated and now own a half-dozen houses in New Canaan, Steven, half-serious and half with a smile acknowledging the incredulity of such excess, explains, “Well, real estate is a kind of a passion for the whole family. When we were living in Shanghai, Anne and I made our first investments in three properties and we made out well. It has to be quality and has to be something you’re willing to live in and to raise a family. When we came to New Canaan we couldn’t decide which side of town to live in, and bought a nice East School home near East Elementary School. Then we bought a home on Oenoke because we liked the tennis court. Then we saw a home on Ferris Hill that had an awesome master bedroom, like something from MTV Cribs, and I just had to buy it. And then I just thought the house on Smith Ridge is a good investment with an over the top home theater, and….” The Tseng’s current residence is at 76 Turtle Back Lane West...and they just listed it FOR SALE for eight million dollars. “We’ll probably buy two more homes in New Canaan before we sell this one, or we could move back into Oenoke or Smith Ridge,” Steven laughs. “New Canaan residential real estate is a good investment. This house has been a fun project for us, and I’m proud to have restored the condition of the home and added to the grandeur of the property. But this house is really right for a younger and maybe a bigger family, who have their own special vision for the home, and who want to take advantage of all the opportunities a property of this size has to offer.”

The home was originally designed by Harvey Lee Kaufman, who was the lead architect in the design of the Windows on the World restaurant that was on top of the World Trade Center. After the Tsengs purchased the house, they acquired an adjacent lot to assemble what is now the 12 acre parcel surrounding the home. They modernized the landscaping to give the property even more of the feel of a grand estate. Then the Tsengs undertook a two-year renovation to get the property to the stunning condition it is in today. The enormous amount of work done focused on replacing and updating the electric, water, HVAC, light control, security and other smart home systems - while preserving the iconic design of the house. Inside, amidst impeccable furnishings, the house is like the ‘Tseng Museum’. There’s the collection of masterpieces that Chris painted when he was a teenager that mimic traditional ancient water colors - but Chris’s are done in ink and others in pencil! There’s Steven’s collection of over 400 original military miniatures, by master modellers such as Francois Verlinden and Le Cimier, depicting legions of the Napoleonic army. And the French cuirass that was battleworn at Waterloo! And, of course, full scaled epoxy resin models of a baby Indian rhinoceros, and adult White, Black, Sumatran and Javan Rhinos, that are replicas from displays in natural history museums in Europe.
Sit. Stay.
Petsitter available for short and long stays. Amongst the Tseng’s collections, Steven is most proud and always excited to show some of his rare coins. “I believe numismatics are most interesting because coins provoke a greater unbiased understanding of world history and show us that different regions and different people can be, and have been, brought together. Many people have Genghis Khan confused with Attila the Hun, but Genghis built the largest contiguous empire the world has ever known by uniting territories in Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East, Persia, Central Asia and China under one central administration, with his heirs continuing to rule for centuries after his death. “Although he ruled the entire empire, his government was tolerant of different religions and cultures in the territories he controlled. These three coins prove it. The first says “Christian Kingdom of Georgia” and “Pay Your Taxes to the Great Khan in Mongolia”...written in Arabic! It shows that the Mongols owned the mint, but were not looking to change the culture of those governed. The second coin shows Genghis Khan’s daughter-in-law as the chief of the Mongol Empire...proving that women are already holding the highest political offices for the largest empire in 1241, nearly 800 years ago. And the third, is what is believed to be among the first gold coins with the name of Genghis Khan, commemorating when he first conquered Afghanistan...a region that has notably withstood outside forces ever since. I usually keep these coins in a bank vault and only keep some replicas here in the house, but I wanted you to see and touch the real thing.” “We have the philosophy that bringing more people to more knowledge will make the world a better place,” Steven continues. “Education fosters discussion. That’s why we’re strong supporters - and I feel like an unofficial ambassador - of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. They have over 5 million visitors a year and over half of the visitors are kids! Our family is proud to have our Chinese names associated with the restoration of the Musk Oxen diorama in the Hall of North America Mammals of the Museum, extremely honored and humbled that newer Americans like us can contribute in the same Hall alongside the Rooselvelts, the Hearsts, and the Harvey Mudds, and most grateful to have millions and millions of visitors to the Museum be inspired to learn 150

science and culture. ...And I’m pleased to say that Ethan completed three years at the Museum’s Science Alliance program, commuting into the City while he was also in middle school at Saxe.” And then Steven gets going on all the rest of the Tsengs various projects... “In Finland, we provided funds to the Finnish Museum of Natural History for the restoration and display of what is known as the Javan Tiger 89, which had been lost to world scholars in the Museum’s storage since 1857, and has now been reborn as the 89th remaining example of this extinct species. And we’re particularly interested in supporting the development of natural history museums in countries that are lacking, and where many will benefit.” Steven even hinted that a Javan Rhino sponsorship is under discussion for 2023! The Tsengs are not your typical New Canaanites. It’s an ironic reflection of the Tseng’s experience as Taiwanese American immigrants, that while they are at once envied for their spot at the pinnacle of American success, respected for their education, achievement, and philanthropy, and friends with people from all parts of their life, they still feel - though they never complain of discrimination or exclusion and make a point of always saying how welcomed they’ve been in New Canaan - like outsiders. Steven sums it up saying, “At this time of the Holidays especially, we should all do something to bring people together. The whole story in life is that everyone has a different story and a completely different perspective. Heck, I just admitted to you before that the ‘80s English new wave band Depeche Mode is my favorite band, and I might be the only one in New Canaan who would give you that answer. But I believe, seriously, that through education we can learn how much we are still all the same, and most importantly how we can live together. That’s the legacy we’re trying to leave.”

NEIGHBORS LINK
Education is central to a group of Neighbors Link initiatives. The Family Center hosts parent education and early childhood development and academic support for children, and serves as a gateway for linking families to related community resources. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes offered in conjunction with Westchester Community College, and a range of adult education classes, are available seven days a week, for people of all ages and abilities. Parent education programs provide guidance on the academic success and other aspects of raising bilingual children. Neighbors Link offers classes to achieve citizenship, helps families navigate the local school system, and provides workforce training. Adult Education Director, Ramiro Rincon, explains, “English language education has always been a core part of programming at Neighbors Link. It not only provides immigrant families with essential tools for integration, but it allows opportunities for long-term residents to sit side by side with newer neighbors, practicing English skills together and forging relationships that make our community stronger.” And Maria, an ESL learner, said, “I like attending Neighbors Link English classes because they adapt to my schedule and offer me a lot of options for learning. Since each class might be a little different, I find it very interesting how I pick up something new at every session that I attend!”

Development, comments, “The Worker Center facilitates connections to employment, supports advocacy for fair wages, and provides workforce development training to help people move toward economic stability. The workers who come to Neighbors Link for support have been deeply impacted by the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and it is an honor to stand alongside them as they self-advocate for fair and just policies that impact all of us.” Neighbors Link also provides the full array of immigration legal services, from citizenship applications to removal defense proceedings. Remarkably, Neighbors Link has six lawyers and a crew of paralegals on staff, working as a dedicated powerhouse legal practice, handling over 650 cases per year! One Neighbors Link client put it plainly, “My family and I were not in the position to hire an attorney when we needed help with our complicated immigration matters, so the help of the Neighbors Link attorneys was invaluable.” And another Neighbors Link client explained, “Knowing that legal services are here at Neighbors Link makes people feel like they have a place to go for help that they trust and where they feel safe.” BEDFORD & NEW CANAAN

Finally, Neighbors Link plays an important role in educating the community-at-large about issues related to immigration. Neighbors Link provides cultural awareness training to community members, congregations at houses of worship, school districts and local law enforcement, including over 400 local police officers each year - all in order to spread the message that holistic integration of the immigrant community strengthens the whole community. Volunteers and volunteerism are the heart of Neighbors Link. As Volunteer Manager, Martha Palomino, puts it, “One of the most important ways we accomplish our mission is through our volunteer programs. At Neighbors Link we are committed to bringing diverse communities together by engaging hundreds of volunteers in our programs each year. These opportunities inspire a culture of collaboration and integration between long term and newer residents.” About half of all volunteers are high

schoolers, whose long-term views of immigrants, immigration, and charity are deeply impacted by their work with Neighbors Link. And central to all of Neighbors Link’s work are the ‘Friends of Neighbors Link’ - a group of about 40 most dedicated volunteers who started out raising money to buy textbooks for Neighbors Link clients and now do everything from public advocacy and reaching out to elected officials to planning and running fundraisers and community events. Neighbors Link continues to grow in scope and breadth of offering each year, and has recently added a center in Yonkers to their Mt. Kisco and Ossining locations, ensuring immigrants throughout Westchester County have access to programs. While Neighbors Link has been awarded special recognition for its work from the State of New York and other authorities, and receives public and grant financing, the charity relies heavily on private charitable contributions. Neighbors Link was able to respond to the unique pressures the covid pandemic put on the immigrant community with a full offering of online programs and expanded capabilities for community outreach. Early on in the pandemic Neighbors Link started making 1,000 phone calls a week to check-in on community needs. Neighbors Link also partnered with Feeding Westchester to ensure the community had access to fresh and shelf stable food. In 2021, as part of the New York State Vaccine Equity Task Force, Neighbors Link has worked to provide reliable information and assistance with obtaining vaccines. And Neighbors Link has increased its efforts to address what is known as the ‘digital gap’ that the immigrant community faces in the school system and is partnered with the Bedford Central School District to identify and assist children who need help accessing technology or other educational support.

Neighbors Link works to serve the whole community; Neighbors Link is not a geographic location, it’s really a moral concept.
