Welcome to the 17th annual
Over the 11 days we will stage more than 150 events
Here we go once again! It’s summer, it’s July, which can only mean one thing Bedfringe! Where we all get together to enjoy some fringe entertainment. Over the 11 days we will stage more than 150 events this year, breaking our alltime-record
44 of these events are Edinburgh Previews which breaks another Bedfringe record! Thanks again to Mat Roberts who has assisted with the music programme. It is a fab mix of performers and music styles, now in the bar as well as the garden allowing us to put a little more into the festival
You may have noticed that Ivo Graham makes an appearance in the brochure as an unofficial event. We couldn’t get him inside the festival dates But we love working with him, so have programmed him into the Quarry Theatre on 16th July… a preBedfringe warm-up gig if you like
Highlights for me this year are John Robertson’s Dark Room – 21st July, Frankenstein (on a budget) – 20th & 21st July and Tarot (sketch comedy) – 23rd July)
Almost half the programme at this year’s festival is free or voluntary donation. Many other shows are as low as £5 per ticket, so please do support these artists
Many thanks to all our sponsors, performers and you, the audience. Happy fringing!
James Pharaoh MBE – Festival Director
As the known wordsmiths Benny and Björn penned: ‘Mamma Mia! Here we go again, My, my, how can I resist you?’
Well with Bedfringe, you don’t have to resist us, we can’t wait to welcome you to our 17th festival. Whether you are a – go through the brochure and write a spread-sheeter, – a last minute and hope its not sold out-er, or a mooch along and see what all the fuss is about-er, we love you all.
One of our favourite things about fringe are the other people. Have a chat with those in queue next to you or sat on the nearest hay bale in the garden They will be better sellers of a show than we can ever be, and the recommendations from those people have resulted in us seeing some of the most amazing, hilarious, thought provoking and wonderful fringe shows in Bedford and beyond. Ask our staff their picks too or read (and contribute to) our review boards.
Speaking of our review boards, we love it when you get involved in Bedfringe – tag us on social media, buy a now legendary pink Bedfringe shirt, play our retro games, try and put us back together in our jigsaw, and, new for this year, build something in pink Lego.
Us, James, our front of house and bar staff, technicians, and incredible volunteers are there to make your Bedfringe experience, come and chat to us, watch our sanity decrease as the days go on, we normally have snacks if you ask too.
If you want to join our volunteer or technical team then I (Fi) would love to hear from you so email fiona@bedfringe.com
See you in July

Central Standard Theatre presents ONE AND THE OTHER
MORTAL OUTRAGE
vs. MORAL COURAGE
a play by Kent Stetson, C.M.
Two young men grapple with nihilistic twenty-first century hatred, hatred to which one succumbs, hatred over which one triumphs From its shadowed depths, the play rises toward the constant light which buoys the human heart
Canadian-born Zaydan Khalil, a linguistically talented fourteen-year-old boy, is abandoned by his father at a Taliban compound in Afghanistan Zaydan is gravely injured then captured during a US/Taliban firefight He’s transported to the United States military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he is held for ten years without a formal charge Did Zaydan throw the grenade that killed an American medic? Despite the lack of evidence, the boy is lost to his family and all but forsaken by his country Zaydan Kahil, boy to man, endures ten years of gross human rights abuse, deprivation, isolation and torture.
A life of privilege, heightened natural ability is no shield against Kerry Long’s darkening aspirations The naïve, gifted, rudderless young man becomes a conduit for the nihilistic hatred of the extreme right.

Stratford Productions presents THE STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL & MR HYDE
By Robert Louis Stevenson
Adapted and performed by Mark Stratford
First published in 1886, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a mystery tale about the inexorable conflict between good and evil.
In this faithful adaptation Stevenson’s gripping narrative is brought vividly to life through a combination of powerful story-telling and masterful character creation.
Gabriel John Utterson is Henry Jekyll’s lawyer and trusted friend Deeply concerned by a strange clause in his friend’s will, Utterson feels compelled to investigate the sinister Edward Hyde – Jekyll’s unlikely protégé.
Convinced that Jekyll and Hyde’s relationship is founded on blackmail, Utterson embarks on a quest to learn more, but – as he does so – he finds the truth to be far worse than he could have ever imagined...

Bedford Creative Arts & 1Degree East presents I AM
‘I am who I am’ is a dance performance that explores social and psychological issues of self-image The piece embraces the complexities of accepting who we are by confronting the conflicting relationship between self-love, self-loathing and vanity
In our digital age of social media and unrealistic perfectionism, this work reflects the notion of cultivating the awareness of being loved
An invitation to arrive, to be, to see, to receive love
An invitation to pay attention to how the body moves, and how its language communicates the depths of our beings, playing with the perception of what we tend to show and tend to hide, what we tend to look at and avoid looking at or hope that no one sees
This piece is a result of an artistic collaboration project of local emerging artists from Bedford for Bedford and beyond

Thomas Benjamin Wild Esq has been delivering his own brand of singalong, musical humour since 2016, and the video for his sweary anthem ‘I’ve No More F***s To Give’ has been viewed over 16 million times on YouTube alone, sending his debut album ‘Awkward Encounters While Walking My Dog’ to number three in the Billboard Comedy Album Chart in 2019
In 2023, he decided he needed a band of well-groomed folk to accompany him on his travels around the country and join in with the mirth and merriment, so the Fancy Chaps were formed Thomas takes inspiration from the wit and wisdom of the songwriters of the early-mid 20th century and combines them with punk rock sensibilities to create pithy songs full of catchy tunes and social and political commentary that speak volumes about the times we live in

Three Bedfordian poets – Katie O'Pray, Cameron Stuart and Chris Belson – collaborate in a showcase of exciting new writing.
What does it mean to nurture –a loved one, a stranger, a community, the self? These poems reflect on practices of nurturing; their invaluable place in our daily lives.
Katie O'Pray is a creative facilitator, whose poetry has been associated with the National Poetry Competition and the Manchester Writing Competition, among others. Their ‘devastating’ debut collection APRICOT was published by Out-Spoken Press in 2022.
Cameron Stuart is a teacher, bookseller and poet, who has taught creative writing at several institutions in the UK and US. He splits his time between Bedford College, Eagle Bookshop, local workshops and his typewriter performance poetry
Chris Belson is a writer of short fiction, poetry and song. His work explores dream-like borders between psychological and physical space; the particular, flawed lenses through which we see the world around us

Mark’s storytelling in the Studio is a Bedfringe fixture
He’s back for the twelfth time in fourteen years
Transformation – shapeshifting, metamorphosis – has been a vital part of storytelling from the earliest epics to modern fantasy, and in all cultures.
Sometimes the transformation is no more than a trick to help the character, but here Mark offers four stories where physical change grows naturally from the circumstances
Three are his telling; Sara will sing the fourth – one of the oldest and greatest of British folk songs
Justice, fulfilment, love, and finally life itself are won in these transformations
