BEDFORD BOROUGH SELECTED FOR HIGH STREETS HERITAGE ACTION ZONE Bedford Borough Council will receive £1.76 million from Historic England to deliver building works and a cultural programme to regenerate Bedford high street. The South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership and LoveBedford are also contributing funding. In Bedford funding will be used to reinstate the historic features of buildings across the high street, reducing traffic and bringing the wider community back into the area. Bedford Borough Council has currently earmarked 43 buildings as eligible for funding under the HSHAZ programme. Improvements to these buildings could include: • Reinstatement of traditional shopfronts. • Conversion of vacant floor space for retail and/or residential use.

• Repair and reinstatement of architectural details to the façade of buildings. • Undertaking structural works to help achieve these improvements. The High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) programme is run by Historic England on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, with a contribution from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. If you are a building owner in Bedford Borough and your premises falls within the High Street Heritage Action Zone, you can speak with the HSHAZ team about possible refurbishments to your property. MP COLUMN

VIEWS FROM RICHARD FULLER,

MP FOR NORTH EAST BEDFORDSHIRE

Young people have been particularly hard hit by disruption caused to the jobs market by the pandemic, so I was pleased that the government’s ‘Kickstart Scheme’ launched this autumn. This £2billion scheme is designed to take young people off benefits and put them into quality jobs.

I recently visited the team at the Jobcentre in Biggleswade and was impressed by the efforts the staff have made to help people during the lockdown and in the months following. We had an excellent discussion about how the JobCentre team will be implementing the new Kickstart programme with local employers and the role they will play delivering these opportunities to young people across Bedfordshire. So how does the Kickstart Scheme work? Young people aged 16-24 who are claiming Universal Credit can get a six-month work placement that is fully funded by the government. This means the Government will pay 100 per cent of the young person’s age-relevant National Minimum Wage, National Insurance and pension contributions for 25 hours a week, which the employer can top up if they choose to. In addition, the Government will also pay the employer £1,500 for each young person they take on, to support any training or associated costs like uniforms that they might incur when setting up the scheme. The scheme will

6

Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

initially be open until December 2021, but there is the option for it to be extended. More information is available at https://jobhelp.campaign.gov.uk/ kickstart/ Getting off to a good start in one’s working life is crucial for building confidence and ambition and this package of support provides great incentives for local firms to help us all pull together to get the next generation into work. If you are a local business, I am urging you to take on a young person through this scheme. We cannot allow young people to be left behind as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and schemes like this will be vital for creating jobs and giving young people the skills to access them. For more information and details on how to apply, please visit www.gov.uk/kickstart I want North East Bedfordshire’s young people to get a good share of these jobs and I will be talking to businesses in the coming months to see how we can together create good opportunities for our young people. If you would like to share your experiences of the scheme with me, please get in touch at richard.fuller.mp@parliament.uk If you would like to share your experiences of the scheme with me, please get in touch at richard.fuller.mp@parliament.uk

MP COLUMN

VIEWS FROM MOHAMMAD YASIN,

MP FOR BEDFORD AND KEMPSTON

I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to write my first column for Beds Life and support a great local media business. As MP for Bedford and Kempston, I’ll focus on issues important to you and our community. I look forward to hearing your views on my monthly musings. As a rural community, I know many of you will have taken an interest in the Agriculture Bill, a piece of legislation the National Farmers Union (NFU) said signifies the biggest reform and transformation of British agriculture in a generation. The Bill will introduce some positive changes when it completes its passage through Parliament this month, but the legislation still falls short on protecting farmers, our natural environment and tackling climate change. The Covid-19 lockdown exposed the weaknesses and inequalities in our food system and there are fears the new laws also fail to prioritise food security, sustainability and have no answers on food poverty.

Many of you want to see stronger protections for our world class standards to prevent farmers being undercut by cheaper imports. US practices forbidden here, including chlorinewashed chicken, hormone-fed beef have made headlines but while the focus is on the US trade deal, the truth is that many of the countries we are trying to broker trade deals with have lower standards than us in many areas including the use of antibiotics, pesticides, growth hormones and on animal welfare. The petition has been effective. The Government agreed to set up its Trade and Agriculture Commission to help protect UK farmers and our food sector. But only by enshrining our standards in law, can our farmers be prevented from being priced out of the market. The Cabinet Secretary, Michael Gove, who has oversight over Brexit policy and future trade deals, has said that “over his dead body would he accept United States food standards”. Unfortunately, the Government, including every Conservative MP in Bedfordshire rejected the last attempt to require imported food to meet domestic legal standards from 1 January.

The Bill’s journey through Parliament hasn’t been without controversy but it is the protection of British food and animal welfare standards that has driven so many of you to protest.

The farming minister Victoria Prentis said the government was “absolutely committed to high standards” but they weren’t committed enough to stand up for British farmers where it really matters – in law.

More than a million people have now signed an NFU petition urging the Government not to agree to trade deals that lead to imported foods that would currently be illegal to produce here.

MARKING REMEMBRANC

AND ARMISTICE DAYS IN 2020 Due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, and the importance of slowing the spread and keeping our communities safe, Remembrance and Armistice Days will be marked very differently in Bedford this year. Remembrance Sunday falls on Sunday 8th November. Normally this would see crowds of people join an event on Bedford’s Embankment, but this year, organisers at the Bedford Branch of the Royal British Legion are asking people to stay away to avoid the spread of COVID-19. A socially distanced service for members of the Royal British Legion and local representatives will take place and the Royal British Legion and Bedford Borough Council are looking at plans for this to be broadcast online. Armistice Day on the 11th November will also be marked by a ceremony with a small invited group in order to be COVID-19 secure and keep those attending safe. Robin Thomas from the Bedford Branch of the Royal British Legion said: “With rates of COVID-19 infection rising and government guidance about the rule of 6, this year’s events will be very different. Sadly we are asking the public not to attend and instead to follow events online, or nationally on TV or on the radio rather than risking the virus spreading. “We know this will be very disappointing to people and we would like to thank everyone for their understanding. A small invited group will attend to show their respects on behalf of the community and remember those who have lost their lives in conflict around the globe and we hope to be able to broadcast this online.” In the run-up to Remembrance and Armistice, The Higgins Bedford Knitting and Crochet Group are making poppies which will be displayed at the museum.

Hello, my name is AnneMarie, welcome to Connect Counselling. I am a BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) registered counsellor working face to face and online with clients who feel that they need extra emotional support in their lives. I see clients with a variety of problems and have a specialism working with clients dealing with anxiety, depression, life changes and loss. Have you ever considered counselling? Perhaps you have wondered what it might be like to talk to a counsellor? To be really listened to? Or are you expected to get on with things, plough on through no matter what? How might I help you? Everybody has problems, but for some working through them is more challenging than for others; perhaps because of an early childhood experience or trauma, or a relationship problem, or a feeling of sadness that might feel too hard or frightening to unpack alone. I can help. 14 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

Counselling provides stability and certainty (amongst many other things) in the changeable and uncertain world we find ourselves in at the moment. We would meet or talk weekly and dedicate specific time to think together about you and your world. As I am a stranger, I do not know the people that you might be struggling with nor am I beholden to family politics which makes it easier to be honest and talk freely. It’s ok not to be ok, but you don’t have to be alone with your struggle. Counselling will help you make meaning of how and why you are feeling the way you do and enable you to move forward with resilience and confidence. If you would like to explore the idea of counselling further please get in contact with me, I look forward to meeting you and I am ready to listen. Anne-Marie

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE KEY LIME PIE

The Composing Cook A light, refreshing and comforting pie which I would advise you to lock away in the fridge because once you’ve tasted it; you will be coming back for more. Visit: www.youtube.com & search for: The Composing Cook, I’ll show you how to make it. Serves 8-10

INGREDIENTS:

4 Limes to give approximately 175ml lime juice a bottle of lime juice 400g dark chocolate digestive biscuits 65g unsalted butter 1 tablespoon cocoa powder 100g bar dark chocolate 397g tin sweetened condensed milk 320ml double cream 1 x 25cm x 4cm deep fluted tart tin, with a loose base (approximate size)

On a plate, zest the limes and add one square of chocolate taken from the 100g bar dark chocolate. Place in the fridge.

Remove tart from fridge, working fast, pour chocolate sauce into base, spreading with back of spoon, covering as much of the base as you can. No need for perfection. Return to fridge.

The Composing Cook

Squeeze limes of their juice and use the bottle of lime juice to make up the difference. Put to one side.

In a food processor, add the dark chocolate digestive biscuits, the unsalted butter and the cocoa powder. Blitz until the mixture reaches a damp, binding consistency. Transfer the mixture into tin and press on the base and up the sides. Place in the fridge. In a small pan, heat 20ml of the double cream slowly. Breaking up the remaining chocolate bar, add this to the warmed double cream. Swill around to coat chocolate. Still on a gentle heat, start whisking until the chocolate is totally melted and you have a runny chocolate sauce.

16 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

Add sweetened condensed milk and lime juice into a bowl, whisk until combined. Add the 300ml double cream and continue whisking until you have a mousse like consistency. Take tart from fridge; pour the mousse mixture into the biscuit base, getting an even coverage. Return to fridge to set, ideally overnight, but no less than 4 hours. Grate the one square of chocolate on top and sprinkle with the lime zest. Unmold the pie, but don’t even try and remove it from its base. Serve as desired.

BOOK REVIEW

M E B E F O R E YO U

by Jojo Moyes

26-year-old Lou Clark still lives with her parents in the quiet market town she grew up in. Almost deserted in the winter the town’s one draw is an old castle and when we meet Lou, she works in the local tea shop serving the coach loads of tourists who come to visit. With a quirky dress sense Lou never really feels as if she fits in and as a teenager longed to travel the world. However, circumstances meant that she could never bring herself to leave. After losing her job she reluctantly takes a job caring for Will, a young quadriplegic man injured in a motorcycle accident several years earlier. She is told the job is just for 6 months and despite a rough start she decides to stick it out and soon an unlikely bond develops between Lou and Will. A romantic novel this also deals with the sensitive issue of disability and the descriptions of Will’s day to day life are well-written with brutal honesty and little sensationalism. Things take a darker turn when Lou learns the reason why her contract is only to be for 6 months and she sets out to bring Will new experiences and remind him of the simple joys of life: not easy for a wheelchair bound man whose ideal way to pass the time before his accident was skydiving or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. As a reader you are drawn into the lives of these characters and the development of their relationship is believable. In the hands of the wrong writer this plot line could turn out to be very twee and cliché but Moyes does not fall into this trap. The resulting novel is engaging, difficult to put down and will lead you to appreciate the small wonders of life. 18 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

BONKERS FOR CONKERS If you are anything like us, you probably can’t walk past a chestnut tree without stopping to l ook for conkers! There are some really beautiful spots in and around Bedford that have been perfect for collecting conkers over the last few weeks. We have so many around the house now, so what else can you do with them apart from fend off Spiders? 1. Counting Games – enjoy counting the conkers to see how many you have, you could use them as coins while playing shopkeepers, or try writing numbers on them and ordering them highest to lowest. 2. Alphabet Games – write the letters of your child’s name on the conkers and then write the same letters down on some paper and let your child match the letters. 3. Make a caterpillar – get crafty and make a caterpillar. You could make holes in the conkers to thread them together, or you could just see how long you can make your caterpillar 4. Conker painting – all you need for this one is a tub or tray, line it with paper, next put some paint blobs around the paper. Tip the tray around in different directions with the conkers inside and see what you can make. Have fun with colour mixing too! 28 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

5. Play the traditional game! Playing conkers is a traditional British game, it might be a little tricky for the younger ones but they may enjoy watching the grown ups play. 6. Conker find – Decorate conkers and leave them for other children to find. 7. Make Conker animals – get your creative on and see what you can make. Some of my favourites are snails using play dough for the body, or rabbits using natural materials such as twigs for the whiskers and leaves for ears. 8. Conker and spoon race – if you don’t fancy eggy mess, use conkers instead add in some obstacles to challenge older kids 9. Exploration baskets – Add them to your sensory tray along with acorns, leaves and toy bugs for some sensory fun. 10. Make jewellery – make a hole in each conker and thread string through to make some chunky necklaces or bracel I’d love to hear your ideas on how you make conkers fun at home.

HM LORDLIEUTENANT’S CADETS

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire Helen Nellis hosting the Cadet Commissioning Ceremony via Zoom

READY FOR SERVICE

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen Nellis, recently appointed her Cadets for 2020/2021 at a ceremony held virtually online. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting lack of opportunities for Lord-Lieutenant Cadets, the Lord-Lieutenant extended the appointment for six of her Cadets from 2019/2020 and commissioned Cadet Warrant Officer Abby Bierton from Bedfordshire & Cambridgeshire Air Training Corps (Flitwick Squadron). The role of Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets is to support the Lord-Lieutenant in carrying out her duties as The Queen’s representative in the county and their selection and appointment acknowledges their outstanding contribution to their Cadet service and to the community.

They are excellent leaders and a credit to their organisations and to the county. Speaking after the commissioning, the LordLieutenant said “It is a genuine privilege to work alongside some of the finest young people in Bedfordshire and I would like to thank the dedicated volunteers who devote so much time to helping to develop our cadets. I am delighted to welcome CWO Bierton to my team of Lord-Lieutenant Cadets who have already impressed me with their commitment, maturity and professionalism when supporting me at key events in the County prior to the pandemic. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the Cadets and hope that they have an exciting year ahead.”

LO S T A N D FOUND

WHEN PETS GO MISSING It is very distressing to have a pet go missing. If your pet has gone missing try not to panic and instead take the following steps to help your pet find his way back home. 1. Try the obvious steps first – check your pet’s favourite hiding places, call and rattle food containers. 2. If your pet is microchipped, contact the chip company to report him missing and ensure that your contact details are up to date. 3. Contact all local veterinary practices and the dog warden during their daytime hours to report your pet missing. 4. Ask neighbours if they have seen your pet. Missing cats have sometimes been accidentally shut in sheds and outbuildings. 5. Use local groups on social media to post pictures of your missing pet and provide a contact number. Remember that it is a legal requirement for dogs in the UK to be microchipped and the contact details on the microchip register must be kept up

to date. Dogs must also wear a collar and tag with their owner’s name and address on it, whenever they are in a public place. Including your telephone number on this tag will make it easier for anyone finding your pet to get in touch. There is no law regarding the identification of cats, but we strongly recommend that all cats are microchipped. A quick-release collar and name tag is often appropriate as well but accident-prone cats can get trapped or injured by collars so consider your pet’s lifestyle when making this decision. It is a very good idea to have pets such as rabbits and tortoises microchipped as well. Take particular care to keep dogs on leads and cats indoors when there are fireworks or thunderstorms, as frightened pets are more likely to escape and become lost. If you are looking after a pet for a friend or neighbour it is a good idea to put a temporary identification tag on the pet’s collar with your own details on, just in case they go missing whilst under your care.

GARDENING

RHUBARB RHUBARB Rhubarb is a reasonably easy trouble-free plant to grow. It is also a handsome plant, with large leaves and striking red stems, and who doesn’t love a rhubarb crumble? The trick is to choose the right spot. Ideally it needs to be planted in full sun but if your garden is very sheltered it will tolerate partial shade. Don’t plant it anywhere where it might be in the way, disturbed, or need to be moved from. Rhubarb has an extensive root system and prefers to stay put, for at least a decade, so give careful thought to the spot. Rhubarb dislikes wet soil, so make sure it’s welldrained. Dig in plenty of organic matter a month or so before planting. It’s generally easier and more productive to grow rhubarb from crowns (divided plants) rather than seed, and from now until Christmas is the perfect time to plant. Dig a hole a little wider than the rhubarb crown in your prepared ground. Plant so that the growing tip is about an inch /2.5 cm below the surface. Firm the soil well around the roots to removed air pockets. Water well and mulch with organic matter, avoiding the growing tip. During the growing season keep the area around the plant free of weeds and give an occasional good soaking in prolonged dry periods. Remove 38 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

any flower heads that appear in the spring. Flowering will weaken the stems. If the crown rots, your soil was too wet, but following all the advice I’ve given earlier should prevent this happening! Harvest time is May until July, but rhubarb is a long-term investment so don’t harvest it during the first year. It needs that full first year of growth to establish a strong root system. Second year leave at least five strong stems when you harvest. After that you can leave three or four stems each time. You should get 2-3 crops per season. Remove only the largest stems when picking and wait till the leaves have fully opened. Pull gently from the base with a slight twist. The leaves are poisonous but can be safely composted. Once your rhubarb is established you might want to try a forced crop for sweeter more tender stems. Rhubarb is forced by growing it in the absence of light in a microclimate slightly warmer than the outside temperature. You can start forcing in January for best results. Remove dead leaves and weeds from around the crown and add a layer of straw or shredded paper to warm the emerging shoots and to protect them from frost. Then cover the crown with an upturned dustbin or large crock pot to cut out all the light. The rhubarb should be ready for harvesting 8 weeks later. Rachael Leverton
