COMMUNITY

COUNCIL TELL US WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT OUR LOCAL PARKS Bedford Borough Council’s customer satisfaction surveys for Priory Country Park and Harrold-Odell Country Park are now open. The customer satisfaction survey asks park users what they like about the parks and also invites them to suggest any improvements. The survey responses collected will be used to help guide the future management of the park. The survey for Priory Country Park is available at https://forms.bedford.gov.uk/pcp and for Harrold- Odell Country Park at https://forms. bedford.gov.uk/hocp. The closing date for both surveys is 30th April 2019. Hard copies are also available from local libraries, the Customer Service Centre, Borough Hall, and at the cafes at Priory Country Park and Harrold-Odell Country Park.

MORE AVERAGE SPEED CAMERAS TO BE INSTALLED ACROSS BEDFORD BOROUGH The villages of Bromham, Clapham, Colmworth, Elstow and Willington are set to have average speed cameras installed, alongside Hillgrounds Road in Kempston and Mile Road in Bedford. These cameras measure the average speed over a length of road, rather than measuring it at a fixed point. This means they have a greater long term effect on how fast people choose to drive rather than just slowing down for a speed camera. They also help drivers choose a more appropriate lower speed across the road network.

ROUND AND ROUND THE GARDEN: A CELEBRATION OF HORTICULTURE IN ART 6th April 2019 to 28th Sept 2019 Wixamtree Gallery | Free Entry Celebrate all things gardens and gardening with The Higgins Bedford at the new exhibition ‘Round and Round the Garden: A Celebration of Horticulture in Art’. Featuring works by major artists from the internationally renowned Cecil Higgins Collection, this exhibition celebrates our human fascination with gardens and looks at how gardens and gardening have provided inspiration for artists. 4

There will also be a sensory installation in the gallery created by the Theatre of Widdershins with The Wynding Wixam Tree, a sculptural piece by local puppet maker and storyteller, Andy Lawrence. Alongside the exhibition there will be gardenthemed events including garden tours, plant sales, a British Sign Language tour and workshop with Access Bedford, lunchtime lectures, Easter and May Half-Term holiday activities and more.

IEW HER POINT OF V T O E H T – IT X E BR This is not an article about Brexit, so please don’t look away! It is an article highlighting how we are handling Brexit, and what we are learning about ourselves. It’s neither all pretty, nor all despairing. The Brexit process is the most difficult constitutional disagreement we have had in this country since the Irish Constitutional affair of over a century ago. I know people are asking for Parliament to make up its mind. The truth is that the public is as divided as politicians, and we are all genuinely reflecting concern and uncertainty about the way forward. One or two things are evident from my contact with constituents. On the dark side, people are more polarised and prone to extremes of language than they were when I was first in Parliament a generation ago. People are also just plain rude, writing to someone they do not know in abusive terms in a way I think they would not to anyone else. Many people also are prepared simply to parrot letters and arguments they are sent from others. We can tell, you know. On the better side the really thoughtful letters display both an understanding of the issues, and the agony of decision making which reflect arguments between generations and within families.

6

There are no easy answers. Not everyone you know really thinks the same as you- despite what you tell me, or they tell you! And we may not know ‘the right answer’ for many years.

There are no easy answers. Not everyone you know really thinks the same as you- despite what you tell me, or they tell you! And we may not know ‘the right answer’ for many years. Tragedies around the world are sobering, displaying what people are capable of to others when political processes break down, and people are radicalised into believing falsely and wickedly that they must now resort to violence to deal with a perceived ‘threat’. In all that we do over Brexit and beyond, we must remember our civilities and patience, and remember as the late Jo Cox told us – there really is more that unites us in the U.K. than divides us.

Assistance Dog Charity

N E E D S VO LU N T E E R S TO LO O K AFTER AMAZING MUMS

ASSISTANCE dog charity Canine Partners is looking for volunteers that can open their homes to the charity’s canine partner mums. • Volunteers look after the canine partner mums, also known as brood bitches, and are also responsible for taking care of the newborn puppies. • Brood bitches live in volunteers’ homes and spend most of the year as a well-trained family pet. • Each brood is expected to have approximately four litters before being retired. • Volunteers do not need any experience as all the relevant support and training will be provided. “I was nervous when it came to the time for my brood bitch Fay to have her puppies, but the support I had was second to none,” says Angela Richmond, a 57-year-old volunteer. “Canine Partners were with me every step of the way and nothing was too much trouble to make sure I had everything I needed to support Fay and her puppies.” To apply you must be aged 18 or over and live within the designated area. “Being involved with Canine Partners was the best decision I have made in my life,” says Angela.

“When you see the end result of that dog changing someone else’s life for the better as a canine partner, words can’t really describe the sense of pride and fulfilment it gives you.” The puppies born will grow up to be amazing assistance dogs for people living with physical disabilities, boosting their partners’ confidence and independence.

About Canine Partners

Canine Partners is a registered charity that assists people with disabilities to enjoy a greater independence and quality of life through the provision of specially trained dogs, whose well-being is a key consideration. These life transforming dogs also provide practical, physiological, psychological and social benefits including increased independence and confidence as well as increased motivation and self-esteem. A canine partner also brings companionship, a sense of security and increases social interaction. Canine Partners receives no government funding and is wholly dependent on public donations and legacies. If you are interested in this voluntary role, please visit caninepartners.org.uk/ get-involved/volunteering/brood-bitch-holder/

BOOK

review One Day

by David Nicholls Ah, the hazy days of university. When we are young, with the responsibilities of a family far in the distance, full of potential, with the world at our feet. How many of us sat around with our friends and thought about what our lives would be like when we were 40. Would we be happy? Would we be married with children? Would we still be friends? Dexter and Emma are both studying at Edinburgh University and on following their graduation they spend the night together. Both have dreams and plans and they wonder what their lives will be like in the future. This night marks the beginning of their friendship. A friendship that is revisited in the book every 15th July for 20 years. This is an interesting format for a novel: one chapter for each day. We see nothing of what happens in the intervening 364 days and are left to deduce what happened from the text. Will their lives turn out as they hoped – will Emma improve the world as she wanted to on that first 15th July? Life, it is clear, never quite turns out as we planned. As joy and tragedy play out for the reader, we are reminded that events have a habit of not asking us for permission first and taking us down a different path.

The Knight family are very well known in British wrestling circles. Roy, Zak and Ricky are all currently wrestling for many different promotions as well as their families Norwich based company. As good as they all are (Roy and Zak as the UK Hooligans team are terrific!) none of them are as famous as Paige, who went from their local, family shows to become one of the biggest female wrestlers in WWE history. Fighting With My Family is her story, brought to film by the writing and directing of Stephen Merchant and the superstar power of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

This is sport movie much like every other one in that it follows the wannabe sportstar from the humble beginnings through to the eventual success, highlighting all the trials and tribulations it takes to get there. It is also like most other sports movies in that it is also a very good movie. Much better than you would expect it to be, much better really than it has a right to be, after all we know how it is going to end because it is a true story! Even if you have no interest in wrestling this is still an excellent film.

in dogs Damage to the cruciate ligament is the most common cause of hindlimb lameness in dogs. It is particularly common in certain breeds, including Labradors, Boxers, Rottweilers, Spaniels and Westies.

WHAT IS THE CRUCIATE LIGAMENT? The cruciate ligament keeps the knee bones in position. If the cruciate ligament is damaged, the bones of the knee slide against each other with every step. This makes it difficult for the dog to bear weight properly, and over time, leads to cartilage damage and arthritis.

WHAT CAUSES CRUCIATE LIGAMENT DISEASE? In people, cruciate ligament damage is usually caused by a sudden accident when playing sport. In dogs, it is much more common for the ligament to deteriorate gradually without any major accident. It is likely that some dogs are genetically at risk for the disease.

HOW IS CRUCIATE LIGAMENT DISEASE TREATED? In cats and in dogs that are very small or very old, it may be best to provide strict rest and anti-inflammatory medication and see if the knee can heal on its own. In larger or more active dogs this approach is often unsuccessful and surgery is recommended.

WHAT SORT OF SURGERY IS USED TO TREAT CRUCIATE LIGAMENT DISEASE? In general, the most effective types of surgery are those which alter the angle of the knee, so that the knee stays stable even when the cruciate ligament is damaged. This involves cutting the top of

the shin bone, and using a metal plate and screws to fix the bone in the new position. During surgery, the surgeon can also look inside the knee joint and remove any damaged areas of cartilage. How long does it take to recover from cruciate surgery? Dogs need to receive strict rest for 6 weeks after cruciate surgery, and will then gradually return to normal exercise. Your surgeon will give you some strict rules to follow to make sure your pet does not damage the leg during the recovery period.

GARDENING

Scale Insects Small sap feeding insects common and widespread in Britain and northern Europe. In the UK a wide range of plants are attacked to include houseplants, greenhouse plants and many fruit and ornamental trees growing outdoors. There are more than 25 species of scale insect in the UK. The most widespread and troublesome scale species of trees include horse-chestnut, (Pulvinaria regalis) and beech scale, (Cryptococcus fagisuga)

Initial symptoms are yellowing foliage, weakened, stunted or distorted growth and sunken spots on the upper leaf surface that correspond to the position of scales below. Damage to plants results from the effects of feeding on young tissue, which weakens and distorts new growth making plants unsightly. Secondary effects result from fouling of the leaves and stems with honeydew which encourages the growth of a fungus known as sooty mold. Nymphs and mature females produce white, yellow or brown wax scales up to 5 mm long covering their bodies. Scale insects generally remain static on plants and feed by inserting their stylets into plant tissue.

Females lay hundreds of eggs either under wax scales, coverings of woolly wax or under their bodies. Young nymphs known as crawlers hatch some weeks or months later and disperse over plants before settling to feed. A single female common soft scale can produce up to 250 live young, breeding all year round on protected crops. A single brown scale can lay up to 2,000 eggs that are protected under the parent’s scale from May to July outside. Crawlers may be spread from plant to plant by wind and animal vectors. Insecticide treatments are most effective when applied to kill young crawlers before they have settled and begun to form their protective scales. In most UK outdoor tree species eggs hatch in late June to July. Due to the non-persistent nature of these chemicals re-infestation may soon occur and repeat sprays at 14-21 days maybe necessary.

GARDENING

OPEN

your garden By opening your garden to visitors, you’ll give people a great day out, and raise money to help those in need. Even better you’ll connect with a community of like-minded garden-owners, all passionate about their beautiful gardens. Is your garden worth visiting? Do friends and family wax lyrical about your plot? Do neighbours ask for advice and cuttings? Do you sometimes wish you could show other people the result of all your hard work? If you answered yes to these questions, then it’s very likely other people would love to see your garden too. It might seem a somewhat daunting experience but opening your garden to the public can be very enjoyable. Many people get the bug and open their gardens year after year. Most people start by opening once in a year, but many go on to open twice a year, to show off their garden in different seasons.

This month I’m going to talk about The National Garden Scheme. This wonderful initiative gives gardenlovers unique access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales. It also raises money for nursing and health charities through admission fees, teas and cake. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. 52

You don’t need a big garden. There are some tiny plots in the NGS. What matters is quality, character and interest. NGS will support you all the way with their network of helpful, friendly volunteers. Initially you’ll be visited by one of the team during the season you feel your garden would look best. And if you don’t feel as though garden is worthy of being part of the scheme, why not visit open gardens in your area to gain inspiration, hints and tips, make new gardening friends, and raise a bit of money for charity.

The

B LU E S Bedford Blues are gearing up for a big finale to the Greene King IPA Championship season with two huge clashes at Goldington Road in April.

On Saturday 13th, Richmond will be making their way to town before the season comes to an end with the visit of Nottingham on Saturday 27th with the end of season party following the final whistle. The Blues have already started their preparations for the 2019/20 season with the signings of four new players – back rowers Dan Temm and Joe Atkinson from Yorkshire Carnegie and Wasps respectively, prop Scott Jenkins from Scarlets and utility back Matt Worley from Northampton Saints – while Dean Adamson, Oli Curry, Lewis Robling, James Lennon, Ryan Hutler, Rich Lane, Alex Penny and Sean McCarthy have all agreed new deals to remain at the club. But the Blues will also be saying goodbye to some familiar faces as Lee Dickson, Ben Cooper, Camilo Parilli-Ocampo, Mark Flanagan and Jarad Williams all confirming that this season will be their last at Goldington Road.

56

Former England international Dickson will be passing on his vast knowledge of the game as he takes up the role of ‘Master in charge of Rugby’ at Barnard Castle School in County Durham – the school that both he and his brother Karl attended. Cooper has taken on a player/coach role with Bury St Edmunds, ParilliOcampo will be heading to Chinnor while Flanagan is hanging up his boots to focus on his career as an engineer and Williams is moving north with his family. Everyone at Bedford Blues wishes them well with the next stages of their career.

Make sure that you come along to bid a fond farewell to the departing players by purchasing discounted tickets for the Blues remaining home games at www. bedfordrugby.co.uk.
