Alistair Burt, your Local MP... EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES IN PARLIAMENT

I

’ve been delighted in recent weeks to meet up with different school and youth groups visiting Parliament from NE Bedfordshire. Some come for the guided history tour like the @CBYouthVoice team from Central Bedfordshire, or to take part in activities with our excellent Education Centre as a number of our primary schools have, and some to gain awards – like Biddenham International School who were invited to Speaker’s House to receive the Speaker’s School Council Award from Mr Speaker himself, and it was super to have the chance to congratulate them personally.

Parliament has taken a lot of time over recent years to improve and grow the Education Service, and there is lots available. I recently posted an article on my Facebook page with regard to free teachers courses, which I know a number of teachers in NE Bedfordshire have already taken up, so do follow those links if you are in the teaching profession. Parliament’s new Education Centre was officially opened by Professor Brian Cox in July 2015 and is situated at the North End of Victoria Tower Gardens. It is a world-class education facility that inspires and connects young people with Parliament and democracy. It is a dynamic, stimulating environment, distinct from the school environment and makes use of creative and immersive technology to create a unique learning experience that generates a sense of anticipation in groups entering the space, and from which groups depart feeling inspired and excited about their Parliament. Each of the learning spaces has a theme which is intended to add to the exciting experience of visiting the Education Centre. Four of the learning spaces will be themed, respectively, Commons, Lords, Monarchy, and My Parliament. Plus there is an immersive ‘Discovery’ space – a sensory, interactive room that plunges students into an immersive environment via the use of 360° projection technology.

May 25th 2018 The General Data Protection Regulation

T

he General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will affect every organisation that collects, handles or processes any form of data where an individual is personally identifiable. It covers employee, supplier, client and prospect and marketing data – from the post room to the board room. The new legislation comes into force on 25th May 2018 and replaces the current Data Protection Act. In basic terms, it is an upgrade and gives individuals far more control over how organisations can use, store or transfer their data. It requires organisations to be more transparent and accountable regarding their use and handling of personal data. There is a lot of misguided information circulating: • Brexit means nothing. The Data Protection Bill is going through Parliament and this will be known as the Data Protection Act 2018. • Compliance with the current Data Protection Act or being ISO certified does not render you compliant with GDPR – there are marked differences. • Non-compliance will result in fines of 4% turnover. There are fines applicable, however these will be in extreme circumstances and is used to scaremonger

There are three key terms to consider when preparing for GDPR. 1. Accountability – you will need to document and account for all data you have in-house and decisions you make in the GDPR preparation process. If you can document and justify your legal basis for processing, then this is your case for retaining the data. 2. Transparency – be open and transparent with the data subject as to what you will be doing with the data and why. What third parties will have access to the data? 3. Trust – if you achieve the accountability and transparency stages, then you gain the trust of the data subject. The benefits of getting it right and embracing GDPR are huge: • You give individuals a genuine choice and on-going control over how their data is used. This builds on customer confidence – ensuring your organisation is transparent and accountable. • It enables you to get a better understanding of the data you have in-house and that data is of premium quality – you only hold what you need, rather than what you’d like. • If you don’t hold it, you can’t lose it! GDPR is huge task and affects every single business and organisation in the UK that holds personal data – nobody is excluded, and ignorance is not a defence. CPRE Bedfordshire C

CPRE Bedfordshire is a local Bedford based environmental charity.

Our principle objective is the protection of the Bedfordshire countryside and urban green spaces. We are affiliated to the national charity Campaign to Protect Rural England. CPRE has no vested interests – we own no land, rely solely on membership subscriptions, donations and grants and are politically independent. CPRE Bedfordshire was founded in 1987 so for nearly 30 years have been a voice to protect our countryside and a leading contributor to local planning, countryside and environmental debates. We want to see a protected countryside within the context of a healthier economy and a happier community; we don’t think they are mutually exclusive. CPRE believes people have the right to enjoy protected countryside and urban green spaces, and we have the ambition to make it happen.

We believe in supporting local food and want to see farmers thrive and provide healthy, fresh and seasonal food for us all, hugely reducing food miles.

Get involved

We rely heavily on our fantastic team of volunteers and would welcome further support. We are looking for volunteers with an interest in planning, marketing, events and/or fundraising. Full training and support given with hours to suit. Become a member? Good planning decisions will ensure we reinvigorate towns and cities, while local people take an active role in planning truly green energy and transport infrastructure. Signs your ageing parent needs help

Consider the following list of events. None are particularly concerning on their own; but should we be concerned if our ageing parent acts out a number of these instances in a short period of time?

The forgotten kettle Your dad has now offered you 3 cups of tea since you arrived an hour ago. He’s put the kettle on, and completely forgotten about it each time.

The missed appointments You are regularly pestered for a lifts to hospital appointments, but it has been a few weeks since that has happened. This seems out of character.

The forgotten medication For a parent who has stuck to their medication schedule for years now has missed days in their medication packet.

The overflowing bins Your mum normally dreads an overflowing bin! So why is there is now a horrible smell in the kitchen, and the big bins haven’t been put out?

Don’t be alarmed as soon as you notice one occurrence, or even a few. Just take note of the behaviour, and if it continues then maybe it is time to consider care.

The empty fridge Not only is the fridge almost entirely empty, but the 2 or 3 items that are there are a week out of date. For your foodie mum this is quite strange.

COMMUNITY

residents home Care befriending service F

riends for Life is a Bedford-based registered charity working to address the social isolation of those in Bedfordshire care homes. A significant number of residents in Bedfordshire care homes are socially isolated, receiving few or no external visitors.

Friends for Life recognises how effective friendship is in reducing loneliness and recruit volunteers to become personal befrienders; offering time, friendship and company to those who most need it. We have 42 active volunteers, visiting 44 residents across 20 different homes in Bedfordshire but the need for more befrienders remains high.

Friends for Life are looking to recruit both male and female volunteer befrienders, of all ages and backgrounds. We offer volunteers training, ongoing support, paid travel expenses and paid parking expenses. Our befrienders make a real difference to those they visit and the project is enthusiastically endorsed by the care homes and social services. If you are someone who has an hour or two of free time on a regular basis, enjoys brightening up someone’s day and wants to make a real difference in your local community, please get in contact. Friends for Life would love to hear from you! For more information about how you can get involved, please visit www. friendsforlifebedford.org.uk or email pauline@friendsforlifebedford.org.uk

Bang! The Dice Game

I believe in keeping an open mind

Bang! The dice Game is a new, quicker version of the original and very popular card game.

Open Morning Thursday 3rd May, 10am

In the game, which has an American Wild West setting, you have a sheriff, outlaws, renegades and deputies. The number of which is based on how many players you have (the game is for 3-8 players but definitely plays better the more you have).

Search: Call Parker

01234 861985 callparker.co.uk

Simply put the Sheriff has to kill the outlaws, the outlaws have to kill the Sheriff, the deputies have to keep the Sheriff alive and the renegade has to be the last one left alive. The dice version of the game has boiled the rules down to a very simple roll the dice and use the symbols on them to take your turn (you can reroll up to two more times to get what you want). The dice allow you to heal yourself, to shoot anyone sitting 1 or 2 spaces away from you, to shoot everyone once, to blow yourself up with dynamite or to get closer to being attacked by Indians. The twist in the game though is that when you begin the sheriff is the only role that is revealed. Can you work out who is on your side before you lose?

PRIVATE HIRE EXECUTIVE TRAVEL CARS & MINIBUS NATIONAL SAME DAY COURIER

Notes to my Motherin-law by Phyllida Law

AIRPORT TRANSFER MEET & GREET COMFORTABLE POLITE & RELIABLE ‘PEACE OF MIND TRANSPORT’

This is one of those deceptive little books that looks like a quick ‘read it and forget it’, but is really much more. Law’s mother in law, Annie, shared her family home for seventeen years and ‘was picturebook perfect’. As she was deaf, Law would write her notes with reminders, requests and titbits of gossip every evening before going to bed. In response to her husband’s comment that she could have written and illustrated a book in the time she spent on these notes, she did so, gathering together a series of missives. The one sided nature of the story – we never hear anything of Annie’s replies – means that we fill in the gaps ourselves. The topics range from the mundane – the availability of pearl barley or dusters – to the profound – the death of a family pet. All, however, are tinged with humour, mainly from the chaos of family life and the cast of unseen characters whose many deeds and misdeeds fill the pages. The depth of feeling in Law’s relationship with her is palpable, and as Annie becomes increasingly ill the reader cannot help but feel the sense of imminent loss.

Review Game Night

Game Night is a new comedy starring the always funny Jason Bateman that shows some foresight in that it has actually been made and is out while the board game craze is still on a rise. Hollywood is normally well behind the game on such things! Bateman and Rachel McAdams are a loving couple that hold regular game nights with their friends. This time around Bateman’s brother is back and he wants to run one himself. His game is more of a murder mystery party though… question is is it a game or is it for real? The premise is an amusing one but not one that you would think would lead to a great film. This isn’t a great film but it is very funny and keeps you laughing continuously throughout. The plot is much better than you would imagine for a film of this ilk and the script is packed with great lines and jokes. Jason Bateman is always good and his chemistry with McAdams works well enough that you can believe them as a couple and in the way the react to certain situations. It is the two of them that really make this film.

IN & AROUND

BEDFORD

Soloist at Northern Ballet, creating the lead role of Marilla in The Little Mermaid Q. Did you grow up knowing The Little Mermaid? Why do you think these fairytales are still so popular? I did! In a fairytale there is always a ‘goodie’, a ‘baddie’, a hero or a heroine – something for everyone. Q. How did it feel to have a title role created on you for the first time? Every day I created more of the ballet with David Nixon was different and has added another level to my dancing. I feel personally involved with this character and I am able to express this through the story. Q. What can you tell us about your character and her journey in the ballet? Marilla is the youngest of three mermaids. She has an immature side to her which is most apparent when she is with her friend, Dillion the Seahorse. She is naïve about the human world and doesn’t understand why she can’t go to the surface. She falls in love with Prince Adair and when her heart is broken by him, she experiences unbearable

pain in her heart. She also feels pain in her legs because all this time, her love for him has been her coping mechanism for masking the pain in her legs bestowed on her by the Sea Lord. Her journey is quite a long emotional one. Q. What is your favourite element of the costumes you’ll be wearing? They are all so different to everyone else’s! I also have a tail and I had to learn how to dance whilst wearing it to learn how the tail moves as well as how to make it look most natural. Q. Even though it is darker than the Disney adaptation, what can children still enjoy about the production? You have three mermaids in beautiful costumes and Dillion the Seahorse who children will love. There are fish and jellyfish, sailors, women in beautiful costumes and a Sea Lord! The colours of the stunning costumes are beautiful and the music is fantastic!– the underwater world has a different sound to the human world, creating a beautiful divide.

What is

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome?

B

rachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS for short) is the name given to a set of breathing problems that can occur in breeds of dog that have very short, “squashed” faces. Examples of these breeds are English and French Bulldogs and Pugs.

Why does BOAS occur?

Many dogs of these short-faced breeds have difficulty breathing because the shape of their skull means that they have: • Narrow nostrils • Overlong soft palate (at the back of the throat) • Narrow windpipe • Swollen larynx (voicebox) These features narrow the airway (as if the dog is trying to breathe through a narrow straw).

What are the symptoms of BOAS? Acorn House Veterinary Hospital Linnet Way, Brickhill, Bedford MK41 7HN

Tel: 01234 261839 www.acornhousevets.com Register online today. 46

Affected dogs will have noisy breathing (worse when excited or exercising) and often snore when they are asleep. Some dogs have to make such an effort to suck air through the narrow passageways when they breathe, that they suck

stomach acid up into the food passage, causing gulping, burping, retching and vomiting. More severely affected dogs may be reluctant to exercise, or will collapse during exercise. Hot weather makes everything worse.

What can we do about BOAS?

Dogs with BOAS should avoid strenuous exercise, particularly in hot weather. Using a harness instead of a collar and keeping dogs at a lean body weight are also helpful. However, surgery is the treatment of choice when dogs cannot breathe properly. Excess tissue can be surgically removed from the nostrils and soft palate, improving air flow. In general, the earlier the surgery is performed (ideally before 2 years of age), the better the outcome as this condition worsens over time. Affected dogs should not be used for breeding so that we can reduce the number of dogs being born with these problems in the future. Sometimes surgery can be carried out at the same time as neutering. BOAS surgery should be carried out by experienced surgeons with good facilities for supporting patients through the surgery and recovery period.

Spore producing bodies of the fungus, can often be observed in the center of each leaf spot as tiny black specks. Treatment can be to apply three to four sprays of an approved fungicide (ideally systemic) starting at bud break in the early spring and continue at regular intervals during the spring until dry weather. Thoroughly treat all leaf and twig surfaces. The wetter and rainier the spring the greater disease severity will be. Applying a dormant spray treatment before rain fall is also beneficial.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

for Patio Pots

F

Now is the time you need to be planning your summer containers, whether you are going for uniform colours and types of pots, annuals or permanent plantings. Year-round and transient displays can be a less labour intensive and, ultimately, cheaper way of keeping interest going on your patio. An all-yearround display will need to contain evergreen plants to form a framework that other more transient plants can be built around. Flowering bulbs will give a burst of colour from midwinter through to mid-spring. In summer, you can use bedding plants, climbers, summer bulbs, shrubs and perennials. In autumn, fill pots with perennials, late bulbs and corms, and plants for autumn colour or berries. Over winter, opt for winter-flowering shrubs, hellebores and structural plants, which look particularly striking covered with frost or snow.”

RIGHT PRICE LANDSCAPES Your local expert - Block Paving - Patios - Fencing - Turf & Gravel Laid - Sleepers - And much more - All waste removed If you are adding annuals to your permanent scheme, think carefully about colour. Colours generally regarded as working well together are those which are opposite on the colour spectrum – orange works well with purple, red with green. Vibrant colours such as reds, oranges, yellows and reddish purples look good in pots, which have warm colours such as terracotta, browns or yellows.

Freephone 0800 959 6420 Mobile 07733 254018

To create a more peaceful, sedate atmosphere, use relaxing colours – blues, mauve, pale pinks and purples, white and cream are also calming. Combine them with a beefy foliage plant, such as hostas, for a wonderful contrast and put them into blue, white, silver or green containers to complete the cool effect. For permanent plantings in pots, use a loam-based compost as it retains both water and nutrients well.

Group containers together, which allows you to match flowering and foliage plants and move seasonal flowering plants into the group as they reach their prime. Remove them once they start to fade.

Choose pots as big as possible, which will hold more compost and won’t dry out as quickly. Every year, check that the roots of permanent plants aren’t coming out of the drainage holes in the base of the container or at the surface of the compost.

Standing pots together also reduces moisture loss as the leaves form layers, which trap moisture underneath, creating a more humid area for all the plants.

If they are, re-pot them in spring or autumn into a new container, only slightly bigger than the old one, filled with fresh compost of the same mix as the existing growing medium.

The

uring January and February, Bedford Town had a successful time on the pitch, winning seven of their nine matches, with 1 draw & 1 defeat. The Eagles hammered Kempston Rovers earlier in the season, but the first game of March saw defeat for the side as Kempston won 2-1, after Bedford missed a few chances to ‘do the double’ over their neighbours. Chairman, David Howell, sold his BTFC shares to a consortium, who included manager, Jon Taylor and his father, David. The new owners have not been slow in promoting Bedford Town, and have already hosted a Race Night at the Eyrie and will host a corporate lunch on a Saturday match day; the first one on Saturday 24th March. Bedford boy, Jack Cassidy, was brought in by Jon Taylor as joint assistant manager, along with Gil Octave. Jack came from St. Ives Town, a club he helped get promotion from the division two seasons previously. The combination of manager and his two assistants have helped the team believe in themselves, and attendances at the Eyrie are slowly creeping up, and the club is second in the attendance table for the season. The end of the season is closing in, and Bedford now have nine games to the end, and will be going flat out to try and get into a playoff position. Five of those games are at home, starting with Moneyfields on 24th March, with Chalfont St. Peter and Marlow visiting the Eyrie, before the last two games - both at home. Bedford will entertain AFC Dunstable at home for the penultimate game on Saturday 21st April, and the last game of the season, a week later, is also at home, as Fleet Town visit on the 28th.
