SUPPORT FOR ROUGH SLEEPERS OVER WINTER
‘MR BEDFORD’ KEEPING US MOVING At an event held at Bedford Corn Exchange, Pete Smith won the Battle of Bedford bodybuilding competition, placing first in the Master’s Category, 1st in the Overall Battle of Bedford, and winning the ‘Mr Bedford’ title. Amazingly, this is not Pete’s full-time job; he works for Bedford Borough Council as a Street Lighting and Winter Maintenance Supervisor, part of the team coordinating gritting operations across the Borough. The Council has already carried out its first gritting runs of the season, with each run covering around 480km of road, and with the temperatures dropping Pete and his team are about to get even busier.
The ‘Severe Weather Emergency Protocol’ which has operated for a number of years is in place again this winter, with a shelter, run by The Salvation Army. This year the shelter will be run at their outreach centre on Kennedy Road, off Elstow Road Bedford. This offers those sleeping rough a warm and safe place to sleep, along with an evening meal and breakfast the next morning. All agencies and organisations that work with rough sleepers receive an alert when the shelter is open, and the Council website will also inform people when the shelter is open at www.bedford.gov.uk/wintershelter. Working in partnership with SMART, who run the Prebend Day Centre, the Council will also be providing 10 extra overnight beds which will be available all winter until 31st March 2019. This new extra provision is being funded following a bid by the Council to the Government’s Rough Sleeper Initiative fund announced earlier in 2018. This funding is also providing additional outreach workers who have already supported ten people off the streets and into long-term accommodation. Six people have also moved into temporary accommodation provided by our partners ‘The Kings Arms Project’, and are being supported to find employment and long-term accommodation. If you are aware of someone sleeping rough we urge you to report their location and any details to www.streetlink.org.uk
OLDER PEOPLE URGED IN BEDFORD BOROUGH TO GET FLU JAB Bedford Borough Council is urging its residents aged 65 and over to take up their free NHS flu vaccination before winter sets in. The last batches of the vaccine were delivered to GPs and pharmacies across the country this week ahead of the flu season, which usually starts in December. 8,524 older people across Bedford Borough didn’t take up their jab last year, despite being most vulnerable to flu’s effects. Many of those will have caught the virus and needed NHS treatment as a result. To find out if you’re one of the 22million people who are eligible for vaccination head to www.nhs.uk/staywell 4

A GRIEF SHARED I never met George HW Bush, the 41st President of the United States who died last month amidst sadness at his passing, but also pride at a life extraordinarily well lived in the service of his country. From young WW2 pilot to President, his life seemed an example of faithfulness to some excellent principles in life and to the USA. His courtesy and ability to fight for his politics fiercely, whilst never forgetting the respect owed to those with whom he disagreed, is contrasted sharply with a harsher, more aggressive politics visible not just in his country but worldwide. I’m glad however that my friend John Major, who makes a fair case for a similar broad view of politics and life, and who stood with George Bush in protecting the Kurdish people of Iraq from Saddam Hussein, and the people of Kuwait from invasion, was there to say good bye. But the picture which seemed to capture most attention, and revealed a down to earth emotion in which we can all share, was that of his service dog Sully lying beside his coffin. Sully had been with the President to assist him as he became frailer, but also served as a comfort and support following the death of his beloved wife Barbara, to whom he was married for over seventy years.

The picture which seemed to capture most attention, and revealed a down to earth emotion in which we can all share, was that of his service dog Sully lying beside his coffin An animal’s empathy with human grief is a strange thing, but many will recognise both the devotion of Sully to George Bush after death, and also the dogs healing qualities after the loss of his partner of so long. For many, a dog is a faithful, non-judgemental companion, there to welcome us unconditionally, hear our inmost thoughts when we have to confide in something, and occasionally to be held as we cry for whatever reason, and in its warmth to comfort us amidst the greatest losses of all. We owe our pets much. Sully maybe famous, but there was a place in many of our hearts for our own dear pets, as we reflected on those pictures.

CHARITY
Can you help THOSE MOST IN NEED IN THE COMMUNITY THIS WINTER?
Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation (BLCF) are an independent registered charity, providing support to local community groups and charities, many of whom are working with some of the county’s most vulnerable and in need.
They have launched their Surviving Winter appeal to support those who may struggle with food or fuel poverty during the winter months. It is estimated that over 41,700 households in Bedfordshire live in poverty. Francesca Johnstone, Head of Grantmaking at BLCF says “We are asking the people and businesses of Bedfordshire to come together to support those in need and help
them cope over the winter months. For many people it can sometimes be a choice between heating or eating, this isn’t just something that affects older people, but also families and others in need. Monies raised will support those most vulnerable in the community, together we can help to make a real difference.” BLCF are partnering with local grassroot organisations who work with those most vulnerable in the community.
They are working with local Bedford Foodbank, The Need Project, FACES & Age Concern to provide essential items like food parcels, winter kits, or even helping towards paying fuel costs for those most in need. The appeal is running from now until February 2019 and aims to raise £10,000 to support individuals and families across the county during the winter months.
If you are a local business or individual that would like to support this appeal please get in touch on 01234 834930. Alternatively you can donate by text to: ‘BLCF10’ followed by the amount (£5 or £10) to 70070 Or visit our website link: http://www.blcf.org.uk/giving/donate/winter/ We look forward to seeing you!

DAYC A R E HOSPICE
Bedford Daycare Hospice provides holistic care for adults suffering with life limiting illness who are registered with a Bedford Borough or Central Bedfordshire GP. Cancer and non-cancer patients alike are cared for in a calm, homely environment from the point of diagnosis through investigations and treatment to remission or palliative care. The ‘whole person’ is cared for; mind, body and spirit. Away from the clinical environment the patient can just be themselves in a safe place where the focus is on living. Services at the hospice include the following: • Access to a Registered Nurse on every visit to review pain and symptom control advice as necessary and refer to other members of the multi-disciplinary team as required • Psychological care • Counselling in a confidential setting • Peer support/information sharing with others in a similar situation • Complementary therapy to promote relaxation • Long Term Conditions Education Program • Chair-based exercises and relaxation • Outreach clinics • Respite care

SUPPORTERS OF THE HOSPICE
We are an independent charity and unique in the fact we are Day Care only offering help and support to patients with life limiting illnesses. Local support and the community generously contributes a great deal of money, time and effort to sustain our work. Without your donations Bedford Daycare Hospice simply wouldn’t be here. Every year we need to raise over £500.000 to help provide our vital specialist care to patients and rely entirely on your support. We have opened 4 shops over the last two years, 2 in Bedford Road Kempston, 1 in the High Street Biggleswade and our most recent one in London Road Bedford. The shops provide vital and sustainable income to support the Hospice financially. We invite you to visit them and take advantage of the many bargains we also offer a delivery and collection service. A lot of our events are held in house, however many of the external events are becoming extremely popular e.g. Indian Supper Nights, Annual Ball, Fine Dining Evenings, Quiz Nights, Marathons and Cycle Rides plus many more. Full details are available from our website www.bedforddaycarehospice.org.uk or on our Facebook.com/BedfordDaycareHospice. These are valuable ways of introducing you to the Hospice and the marvellous work we do.

BOOK
review The Tattooist of Auschwit by Heather Morris
Heather Morris had a chance encounter with Holocaust survivor Lale Sokolov in 2003, and over the following three years until his death, he told her the story of his life. Lale was a Slovakian Jew and in 1942, at the age of 25, he was transported to Auschwitz in Poland. Well presented and a bit of a chancer, he managed to get appointed to a job that would allow him to remain alive for the remainder of the war, and give him privileged accommodation and food. He became the Tatowierer whose job it was to scratch indelible numbers into the skin of prisoners. At first glance this might appear to be a depressing story, but it is ultimately not a story of death but a story of love, survival, and determination in the most horrific place on earth. Here the inmates try to maintain some level of existence despite the fear of death every day. Lale meets Gita, a young Jewish woman assigned to work in the camps and they plan for the seemingly unthinkable: a life beyond the camps. What Morris gives us is a story that you won’t be able to put down. A story of hope that will uplift you and reveal the very best of humanity.

FILM
Review Robin Hood
Everyone knows the story of Robin Hood, there has been a movie or TV series made of the legendary character at least once every decade. This time around Taron Egerton plays the eponymous hero and the take here is a very entertaining mix of modern, the start involves Robin of Lockley as part of the Crusades and would not look out of place in a modern war movie, and medieval, as you would expect. The first scene with Robin in the Middle East is a thrilling piece of action cinema that manages to not only tell us more about Robin but gives us info about his attitude, introduces Jamie Foxx’s character and gets the viewer on the edge of their seat. This is a great way of getting you into the film straight away and the film never lets up from that moment on. The writing is really clever and the modern take is never pushed too far (unlike the recent King Arthur movie, though I did enjoy that to!). Robin Hood is a terrific action movie, it isn’t going to break any records but it does the job of being very entertaining.

Sports Awards 2 0 1 8
The Bedford Sports Awards has become a key date in the local sporting calendar, with athletes, coaches and clubs all gathered to celebrate the dedication, hard work and successes over the year. The event, organised by Bedford Borough Council, was held on Monday 10th December at the Bedford Corn Exchange. Over 90 nominations were received across 10 categories, with a panel of 18 judges deciding on this year’s final winners. Judging takes into account the huge diversity in the size, profile and resources available to our
local clubs, individuals and teams to ensure that all nominations have an equal chance of winning, with specified criteria used for each award. The Adults Sports Personality of the Year went to Alex Edwards for his achievements in Freestyle Kayak, representing Great Britain at the highest level. Bedford Hockey Club Girls’ Under 16s won the Sports Team of the Year, having become the most successful junior team in the club’s history after winning the Tier 2 Midlands Area finals competition in April this year.

need to lose weight?
Many people decide to start the new year with a resolution to lose weight and get fit. Our pets might also benefit from making a healthy start to the year.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT WHAT MY PET WEIGHS? It is best to take your pet to the veterinary surgery for a weight check as the scales there are a suitable size for pets and are regularly checked for accuracy.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY PET’S WEIGHT IS HEALTHY AND CORRECT? In addition to comparing your pet’s weight to published weight charts and to previous records, the veterinary team will be able to work out your pet’s body condition score. The body condition score looks at body shape and fat coverage over the ribs to give a score from 0-5 where 3 is ideal. In general, in healthy dogs and cats the ribs will be easy to feel but not visible, and a “waist” will be visible from above and from the side.
HOW SHOULD I HELP MY PET TO LOSE WEIGHT? Treats and titbits can be reduced or replaced with lowcalorie alternatives. Your veterinary surgeon or nurse may advise you to reduce the total amount of pet food that you give to your pet. Prescription diet foods may be recommended. These are designed to provide the correct balance of minerals and vitamins but a lower level of energy. They use food technology to make your pet feel full and satisfied.
WHAT ELSE? Regular exercise is very important. Dogs can be taken on longer walks, go swimming, or join classes for agility, fitness or scent work. Cats are best encouraged to play with toys. Meals will last longer and make your pet feel more satisfied if they are fed in a feeding toy such as a Kong.
BEFORE YOU START Make sure that your vet has checked that there are no health conditions responsible for the weight gain and that it is safe to put your pet on a diet! 47

GARDENING
Vine Weevil
Peach leaf curl is a springtime disease that occurs on peach, nectarine and related ornamental trees. High incidents of peach leaf curl are generally recorded during cool, wet springs after a mild winter has prevailed. The main form of damage is premature leaf drop. This weakens trees, making them more susceptible to other diseases and winter injury. Weakened trees also produce fewer fruit the following season.
Symptoms of leaf curl appear in the spring. Developing leaves become severely distorted (thickened and puckered) and have a reddish or purple colour. With time the leaf surface become powdery grey in colour before turn yellowing/brown and then prematurely dropping from the tree. There is no secondary spread of this disease from leaves infected in the spring to new leaves produced later in the growing season. Diseased twigs become swollen and stunted and may have a slight golden colour. In addition, infected twigs normally produce curled leaves at their growing tips. Peach leaf curl is caused by the fungus, Taphrina deformans, spores of which overwinter on bark and in buds. Infection occurs very early in the growing season. During cool, wet spring weather spores infect new
leaves as they emerge from buds. The infection period for the fungus is very short as only very young leaf tissue is susceptible to attack Peach Leaf curl is not difficult to control. As the fungus survives the winter on the surface of twigs and buds, a single fungicide, liquid copper or sulphur spray, thoroughly covering the entire tree, will provide good control.
If peach leaf curl does result in significant defoliation in the spring, the fruit on affected trees should be thinned to compensate for the loss of leaves. Over-cropping the tree will weaken it and make it more susceptible to winter injury. Application of phosphite and calcium based fertilisers are recommended based on soil test results. Phosphite and calcium sprays and/or soil drenches have been shown to stimulate tree vitality

Tim Brown 01767 627532 bedford@bartlettuk.com www.bartlett.com
BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

Great GARDENING
GARDENING BOOKS
One Magic Square by Lolo Hubein
RHS Great British Village Show by Matthew Biggs and Thane Prince
The village show is a quintessential British tradition, and for many gardeners it represents the pinnacle of their sowing and growing year. This charming and informative book takes you behind the scenes of this very British institution, offering insights into the worlds of judges and contestants. It’s beautifully illustrated with photographs, and offers wonderful gems of insider information, including how to stage your produce, and what the judges are really looking for. There are even recipes for prizeworthy jams and preserves.
52
Following on from the previous book, have you ever wanted to have a go at growing your own vegetables and fruit but feel completely clueless? We’re always hearing that the best and cheapest food is the food you grow in your own garden, but it all seems rather complicated to a total novice. In One Magic Square, Lolo Hubein shows how you can start your own productive food garden in ten minutes a day on a single square metre. She provides simple plot designs starting with salads, and gradually expanding to include beans, tomatoes, corn, roots and much more. She also stresses the benefits of companion planting and provides ideas. The bite-sized designs (pun totally intended!) allow you to extend by one square metre each season, or to pick your favourites. The magic of square-metre gardening is in allowing your project to grow in a manageable way, from simple to more complex. There are even designs catering for different tastes and specific diets.
RSPB Gardening for Wildlife by Adrian Thomas
Adrian Thomas explains the intricacies of attracting wildlife to your garden whether you have a small plot or more than an acre. His style is accessible, but rich in detail. He draws on the latest wildlife research to explain the ecological principles, and to dispel some of the myths which have traditionally prevented gardeners from pursuing a wildlife-friendly approach. There are practical projects to help you create entire habitats, and long lists of suitable plants and trees, and it’s packed to brim with helpful photographs. If you love wildlife and want to encourage more to visit your garden, this inspirational book will help you sow the seeds and reap the rewards.

B LU E S While there will be plenty of New Year thrills at Goldington Road with Championship clashes against Ealing Trailfinders (12 January) and Coventry (26 January), there is also a visit from England Co-Captain Dylan Hartley to look forward to in 2019. On Thursday 17th January, England’s most capped hooker, who has also made more than 250 appearances for Northampton Saints, will be heading to Goldington Road to regale rugby fans with stories from his illustrious career as well as previewing the upcoming Six Nations Tournament and World Cup in Japan. Speaking about the dinner, organiser Ted Carroll said: “Dylan is an exceptional rugby player, the captain of England and a Northampton Saints legend, we are delighted to welcome him to Goldington Road for this very special event. I’m sure Dylan will have plenty of stories to tell - with one or two about his best mate Toops - and won’t shy away from one or two of the controversies he’s found himself in. “This is a wonderful opportunity to get a real insight into the career of one of England’s top players and hear his thoughts about the upcoming Six Nations and World Cup. It is sure to be another superb evening in the Blues Marquee.” Tickets for the Sportsman’s Dinner, which will be overseen by Sam Roberts and includes a three-course meal, memorabilia auction and raffle, cost just £55. By the time you read this, we will know the fate of the Eagles in the FA Trophy, after beating Worthing from a higher division to set up a 1st round tie away at National League side Aldershot Town. It has taken Bedford five rounds, including three replays for this reward. Despite losing 1-0 at half time against Worthing, two goals in a minute from top scorers, Dan Walker and Paul Benson, gave Bedford the victory. To date, the players have scored 28 goals between them. In the league, Bedford’s fixture congestion has taken its toll with three defeats in a row (all away to Peterborough Sports, Didcot Town, and Thame United), which dropped the side down to 11th. But they have bounced back with two back-to-back wins (Dunstable Town at home and away to North Leigh) to climb up to 6th position – just one point off the playoffs with a game in hand. The New Year sees an away fixture at AFC Dunstable on Tuesday 1st January. The side have three scheduled home matches in January, with Coleshill Town (5th), Aylesbury FC (15th), and Peterborough Sports (19th) visiting the Eyrie, and, fingers crossed, we’re hoping to be included in the 2nd round draw in the FA Trophy for another January fixture. www.bedfordeagles.net www.facebook.com/bedfordtown www.twitter.com/bedfordtown
