Remembrance Sunday

T

The Centenary of the 1914-18 war offers an opportunity for reflection on the horrors that confront the country’s Service men and women. 2016 is particularly poignant as it witnesses the Centenary of two significant and costly battles of WW1 and is the 60th anniversary of the Suez Crisis. The Battle of Jutland was the only Naval battle of WW1 which took place over a 36 hour period on 31 May-1 June 1916. Over 10,000 sailors were killed on both sides. British casualties were more than twice those of the Germans. The Battle of the Somme took place between 1 July 1916 and 18 November 1916 and resulted in the deaths of over 300,000 (140,000 on the allied side and 160,000 on the German side). In all there were over 1.1million casualties. The total ground gained was about 5 miles. 16 British Service men lost their lives during the Suez invasion and, whilst not on the scale of WW1, left 16 families devastated by their loss. Despite WW1 being the war to end all wars, Service men and women in Britain’s armed forces have been called on to fight, as the Suez Crisis showed, and continue to be called on to fight on foreign soil for their country and the freedoms we take for granted. The Royal British Legion is the custodian of Remembrance to ensure that those who have given their lives are never forgotten.

MP COLUMN

Alistair Burt, your Local MP... A new kind of politics?

P

arliament returned for the autumn session with the heaviest domestic agenda since 1945 – how to give effect to the decision of the British people to leave the EU.

There are huge implications attached to this, which will become clear as time goes on. I make no secret of my view that this was the wrong outcome, but I accepted absolutely as a democratic politician, who had voted for the Referendum to take place, that I would abide by the result, and work to make the very best of it for those I represent. The detail will come in time, however on the process of Brexit I think at present there is an opportunity for something new. The referendum told us a lot about our country, and how people felt. One thing was emphasised – the disenchantment with the political process, with ‘Westminster’, and the sense that people ‘were not listened to’. The campaign for the Referendum disappointed people, who largely believed that neither side told the truth, and exaggerated their case beyond credibility.

If, as Government and Parliament, we approach the response to the vote in the same old way I don’t think we will address those sentiments. Instead I am arguing in the Commons that we should recognise what is different about the outcome and consequences, and adapt accordingly. There has been no election, and no manifesto. Neither the Government nor the Opposition ‘won’ the Referendum. So we have no party position to defend to the death. We have a clear instruction that we should leave the EU, but beyond that there is a blank sheet of paper. It is, to my mind, Parliament, representing every sector of the public that should deliver, in alliance with Government, not just our departure from the EU, but our arrival somewhere else. This means listening – perhaps through our Select Committeesto all those who are affected by leaving the EU, and hearing what really matters to them. There are big strategic questions such as whether, and on what terms, we stay in the single market. There are issues of detail in farming, environment and welfare, and the terms on which EU citizens come and stay in this country, which affect the millions of UK citizens who live and work abroad. So let us devise a process for our negotiations which enables people to have their say, and be listened to. For Government to demonstrate that its position will be determined by engaging with wider society. In the end Government must make decisions not all of which will suit everyone, but which will have Parliamentary authority and support gathered in a different way from what has put so many people off. It’s a challenge. Are you with me?

Money matters By Martin Lewis

Bah humbug N

Christmas is coming and millions will celebrate it as a retail festival. Call me Scrooge – and many do – but I’d love to ban the giving of unnecessary presents.

ot gifts for your partner and kids under the tree, but rather that ever growing list of teachers, extended family, work colleagues and more for whom buying feels like a chore rather than a joy, ending up with tit-for-tat giving with items that few want, need or use. So what about the joy of giving? But there’s a cost to that too. While it may feel generous to give to someone, you are effectively obligating them to buy you back and help misprioritise their finances. After all, if you give them a £10 bobble hat and they give you a £10 novelty pair of socks in return, the net result is they’ve spent £10 on a hat they neither wanted nor needed – which may’ve been better spent! So why not set up a pre-NUPP (No Unnecessary Present Pact) to say I won’t buy for you and you don’t buy for me – or at least limit the cost. Budget! Before you start planning, consider this: many of us list every lusted-for item, gifts for all and a corking meal, then only afterwards consider: "How will I pay for it?" That's a recipe to be broke. Instead, calculate your budget and ask: "What can I afford to spend on Christmas?" Christmas is one day – don't ruin the whole of the next year for it. 12

Make a list – and check it twice!

Christmas shopping on impulse is dangerous. So make a shopping list and stick to it. Remember, shops spend a fortune on targeting your spending impulses – a list helps you beat them.

Set up a Christmas cupboard

Make a list of who you need to buy for and when you see gifts at great prices, grab, wrap, and put in your Christmas cupboard – the earlier the better.

Buy a cheaper turkey!

"It's Christmas! We need the best!" Everyone presumes to prefer higher-brand goods -but don't be a retail snob. Buy what's right for you, not the shop. Visit www.mysupermarket.co.uk to compare the cost of goods at the big online supermarkets.

CHARITY

The Macmillan Primrose unit

r e t t e b n e v e w o n

O

nce again the communities of Bedford and North Bedfordshire, including businesses, organisations, individuals and charitable trusts, have shown their great generosity in the funding of a major development at Bedford Hospital.

Challenge Cancer Appeal

In 2014 Bedford Hospital asked The Bedford Hospitals Charity to fund both the provision of additional facilities and equipment within an expanded Chemotherapy Treatment Suite in the Macmillan Primrose Unit, and advanced diagnostic equipment in a new Hysteroscopy Suite in the hospital. Under the enthusiastic Chairmanship of the late Mrs Jayne Beard, The Bedford Hospitals Charity launched its ‘Challenge Cancer Appeal’ to raise the £750,000 cost of the entire proposed project.

16

Expanded Chemotherapy Treatment Unit

Working in conjunction with staff of the Estates Department of Bedford Hospital, who had consulted staff about the needs of the Chemotherapy Treatment Suite, the Peterborough-based company Princebuild Ltd has completed a 17 week construction programme, while patients had their chemotherapy treatment in a special facility elsewhere in the hospital. The expansion of the Chemotherapy Treatment Unit and the installation of the new facilities have been completed and patients are again being treated in what is locally known and highly regarded as The Primrose Unit. This expansion and the new installations are the first major changes since the Unit opened in 2004 after ‘The Primrose Appeal’ launched by The Bedford Hospitals Charity raised more than £2,250,000 to fund almost the entire cost of the new cancer care centre. Since then

CHARITY the Primrose Unit has increased further its excellent reputation for the diagnosis and treatment of cancers.

Local Community Support

In recent years and through The Bedford Hospitals Charity, the local communities have funded a new Gamma Camera with integral CT Scanner, along with improvements in the Pharmacy section producing chemotherapy drugs, so ensuring improved diagnostic and cancer treatment procedures. Such improvements themselves increased demands on the Unit, demands to be met by these additional facilities that the Challenge Cancer Appeal is funding.

New Hysteroscopy Suite

As the Appeal progressed, the first ÂŁ250,000 funded a new Hysteroscopy Suite and this new equipment is used for the rapid identification and diagnosis of gynaecological cancers, often removing the previous need for an invasive procedure. With two treatment beds and an increase from eight to 12 in the number of special treatment chairs used when giving intravenous chemotherapy treatment to patients, and where many sessions last several hours, Matron Sue Collins and her dedicated staff will be better able to treat the 30-45 patients they now receive each day. Large photographs of beautiful coastal scenes in this country decorate the walls of the Suite and

the wall onto the garden has large glass doors and windows to enable all patients to enjoy the natural light and the view. The Estates Department and Princebuild are to be complimented on providing an expanded layout and capacity while also ensuring that the Primrose Unit retains the welcoming and comforting environment for which it is known.

Primrose Car Service

During project work The Primrose Car Service set up by The Bedford Hospitals Charity in 2006 continued to take those Primrose patients requiring radiotherapy treatment to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. Operating on five days a week and manned solely by volunteer drivers and with some doing two trips a day, four Vauxhall Zafira vehicles take patients free of charge on the return journey throughout their five or six week treatment course. Bedford and Bedford Hospital can rightly be very proud of the Macmillan Primrose Unit and of all Unit staff and their supportive colleagues in other departments, and of the volunteers who work with them to provide such comprehensive care. Similarly, all those individuals and groups that supported the appeals of The Bedford Hospitals Charity can be truly proud of this most recent achievement and of all the many varied facilities and items of equipment in Bedford Hospital that they have funded by their efforts during the past 28 years.

Benefits of

R

Pilates

egular Pilates practice helps create long, lean and toned limbs and strengthens important core muscles. Here are a few additional benefits of this exercise discipline.

Improves your balance – A better balance is useful for anyone of all ages and can help athletes who need good balance to achieve optimum performance. Strengthens your pelvic floor – Many exercises start with activating the core and engage pelvic floor muscles. A strong pelvic floor stops those embarrassing leaks – in men and women. Builds strength in your spine – Pilates can help anyone by making their spine more mobile yet strong on rotation. Your spine will thank you for it, especially if you spend hours of sitting hunched at a desk or standing all day. It’s good for the mind – Mindfulness practice has been hailed as an antidote to the anxious, stressed and busy mind. Paying attention to breathing can activate the right muscles. When you focus on this, your brain stops stressing. After the session you will feel good physically and mentally.

Aged 40-74? Find out about your FREE NHS Health Check “I was always at the surgery for my mum, it was great to be there to have a chat about me”

Ask your GP surgery for more details or search online for ‘NHS Health Check Bedfordshire’

Check your body is winter ready with a

free health ‘MOT’

R

esidents aged 40 to 74 are being encouraged to have a free ‘health MOT’ to check they are fit for the coming winter and beyond.

“An NHS Health Check is like an MOT for your body – it makes sure that some of your body’s most important systems are all running smoothly and can help spot any potential problems before they cause real damage, helping you stay healthy for longer.”

Free NHS Health Checks are available to over 40s who aren’t currently diagnosed with a long-term condition like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Cllr Louise Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Public Health at Bedford Borough Council, said of her own NHS Health Check experience: ‘Like many people I have a busy life balancing family and work, and I probably don’t think about my own health enough.’

This 20 minute check assesses your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia – conditions that can often be prevented. Your risk of developing these health conditions is calculated by taking measurements such as your height, weight and cholesterol level and asking questions about your lifestyle and family medical history. Taking this information also means that you can be offered personalised advice on how to reduce your risk. Cllr Maurice Jones, Executive Member for Health at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “Many of us make the effort to make sure that our cars are winter-ready, but our busy lives often mean that our own health is at the bottom of our list of priorities.

‘At my Health Check I was able to sit down with an expert and talk about the small lifestyle changes that I can make to stay healthy.’ If you are eligible, your local GP surgery will invite you for an NHS Health Check once every five years, but you don’t have to wait for an invite – you can also contact your GP surgery to find out more about how to make an appointment.

For more information about NHS Health Checks visit healthcheck.nhs.uk 27

This Movember,

grow your moustache for men’s health

T

he Movember Foundation is the global charity raising funds and awareness for men’s health. Since 2003, millions of men and women have been inspired to join this movement to bring men’s health issues to public attention and raise money for men’s health programmes. £402 million has been raised to date and over 1,000 breakthrough men’s health programmes have been funded across 21 countries.

WHY?

When it comes to their health, too many men don't talk, don't take action and die too young. We want to help men live happier, healthier and longer lives.

HOW?

Every Movember (the month formerly known as November) we encourage men to grow and groom moustaches (no beards, no goatees). That simple change in behaviour prompts fresh conversation about the health issues that men face, and helps to generate awareness and funds.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE FUNDS RAISED?

Funds go towards supporting innovative worldclass men’s health programmes supporting four key areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

A LONG WAY TO GO

While we have made great strides, a huge amount of work remains to be done. Average life expectancy for men in the UK is almost four years less than women (presently 78.7 years compared to 82.6 years) Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 25-49 years. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives Men have a 14% higher risk of developing cancer than women and a 37% higher risk of dying from it Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK. Each year over 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and one man dies every hour. 78% of suicides are men. Suicide is the leading cause of death for men aged 20-49 in England and Wales, although the highest rate of suicide is in men aged 30-44 with numbers are growing amongst older men.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED? Sign up to grow your moustache or make a donation – you can also donate to a Mo Bro or Mo Sista's efforts. www.movember.com Movember Foundation UK @MovemberUK 28

FOOD & DRINK

November

Local, seasonal and earthy

S

andy Boyd from Summerhill Farm Shop in Cardington tells us what should be on our plates this November. Ever wondered why your strawberries sometimes taste sour and your carrots completely flavourless? It's probably because they weren't in season.

Parsnips are widely available and can be used in a wide range of dishes including casseroles, cooked in much the same way as the potato or simply oven roasted to bring out even more of the natural sweetness.

Knowing the best times to buy different fruits and veg not only makes your shop a lot cheaper but the foods you eat will taste better too.

Pumpkins from the local fields of Bromham are in abundance right now and delicious in soups, curries, casseroles and even cakes.

Many of us don't realise the hidden cost of food that’s not in season. Take strawberries for example – we've got so used to seeing them in shops all year round, we forget what a real, seasonal strawberry tastes like!

Summerhill is also well stocked with Bedfordshire’s famous sweet red “no tears” onion. It’s milder than conventional red onions, much sweeter, crunchier and juicer and easier to digest. They come all the way from the fields just behind us and are a firm favourite with our customers at this time of year.

Local food can be grown naturally in the great outdoors and left until it's ripe and ready to be picked, making it much tastier than artificially produced food that's travelled thousands of miles to reach the supermarket shelves. So what’s good to eat right now? November is awash with veg that love a nip of frost, while rich game meats complement hearty root vegetables. 32

Take a trip to Cardington-based Summerhill Farm Shop to fill your basket with all a wide variety of seasonal produce direct from local Bedfordshire fields and farmers. www.summerhillfarmshop.co.uk

1. Preheat oven to 165˚c. 2. Whisk together the eggs and milk and pass through a sieve. 3. Add the sugar, bourbon and zest to the egg mix. 4. …John Bunyan Museum and Library

J

ohn Bunyan was born in 1628 in Elstow. He experienced conversion and joined the newly formed Bedford Meeting in 1653. Bunyan believed in the right to draw faith directly from reading the Bible without the mediation of the Church. As religion and politics were closely linked in the 17th century, failure to conform to the Church of England was considered a political act and a result, Bunyan spent two periods of time in prison; the first of 12 years and the second, a few months. During his time in prison, Bunyan wrote many books, including his most celebrated work, The Pilgrim’s Progress, published in 1678, the second part published in 1684. The museum depicts John Bunyan's life and times, including his imprisonment in Bedford. Visitors can wander through the displays and experience life as it was in the 17th century. The collection now held in the Museum went on display for the first time in 1946. In 1988 the members of Bunyan Meeting Church embarked upon a project to refurbish some of the meeting rooms and to construct a purpose built museum to house the large collection of artefacts and books. After ten years of fundraising, the new museum was officially opened in 1998. Bunyan Meeting Church, Mill Street, Bedford, MK40 3EU, Tel 01234 213722 www.bunyanmeeting.co.uk 42

n this month t's oTheatre WhataMK DICK WHITTINGTON

P

ack up your knapsacks, lace up your boots and head on down to Milton Keynes Theatre this festive season for another spectacular, traditional family pantomime!

In the tale of Dick Whittington this year, Samantha Womack, Eastenders’ Ronnie Mitchell will be swarming the streets with her rodent friends as the evil Queen Rat. X Factor finalist and winner of ITV’s I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here Stacey Solomon will be picking up her glittery magic wand as Fairy Bowbells, and to complete our purrfect line up… the hilariously cheeky Kev Orkian! Samantha says of her first time as the ‘baddie’ this year. ‘I’m really looking forward to playing the dastardly villain in Dick Whittington. Being the baddie means I get the best and biggest response from the audience…all the boos of course! It will also be lovely for me as I live in Bedfordshire and MK is my local theatre so I’m really looking forward to seeing you all there!’

Stacey says of taking to the stage in MK: ‘I’m so excited to make my panto debut. I’m a mum and I know how much they enjoy watching panto so I can’t wait to be part of something that can help make some really special memories! I’m looking forward to being a fairy too!’ Featuring all the traditional pantomime ingredients; sensational songs, a live band, dazzling dance routines, slapstick comedy and bags of audience participation – Dick Whittington is guaranteed to be full of wonder to delight audiences of all ages. Dick Whittington tells the rags to riches tale of a young man and his cat on an exciting quest for fame and fortune. They arrive in London seeking their fortune but find the streets aren’t really paved with gold. After meeting Alice Fitzwarren and taking a job, things are looking up until the evil Queen Rat has other ideas- but the glittering Fairy Bowbells will be on hand to sprinkle some panto magic and make sure all is well in pantoland…. Will Dick Whittington find his fortune? Do paws beat claws? Will good conquer evil or will Queen Rat succeed in stopping the course of true love? There’s only one way to find out!

Review Deepwater Horizon

Deepwater Horizon is the story of the oil rig disaster that occurred in April 2010 and became a PR nightmare for BP. It has a top quality cast Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell (terrific here), John Malkovich and Kate Hudson who are all part of a real life story full of politics (the business kind), action & true to life heroics This is a story of heroes and villains of the everyday variety. You find yourself wanting to boo the ‘bad guy’ bosses and cheer the working man heroes all because the writing is so on point. There is barely a wasted moment in this film as we build towards the eventual catastrophe that we know is coming. It is the accident when it actually happens though that really makes this movie such a visceral experience, eschewing the almost universal use of CGI the makers actually built a rig and used it to create real effects as the oil workers world falls apart, and it make a difference, when you can see that everything on screen is real it adds that realism that we have so often lost in big budget movies these days. It truly is something to see on a big screen!

SHOWROOM NOW OPEN

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child takes up Harry’s story from the end of Deathly Hallows; on platform nine and three-quarters with his younger son Albus Severus about to board the Hogwarts Express for the first time. Following in Harry’s footsteps doesn’t come easily to Albus and things take a surprising turn when he becomes friends with Scorpius Malfoy and is sorted into Slytherin by the Sorting Hat. If this review has so far left you mystified then you probably aren’t a Harry Potter fan and wading through over 300 pages to find out what happens next is unlikely! If you are a fan, don’t let the format put you off. We already know what the Wizarding World looks like and this story takes us back to familiar places such as Hogwarts and Godric’s Hollow. Encouraged by Delphi Diggory, Albus decides to make amends for the death of Cedric in the Triwizard Tournament and persuades Scorpius to help him. But as is often the case when wizards are involved, all isn’t quite as it seems…

Tips to get your home ready for the cooler weather

he weather can change quickly, and you don’t want to be caught unprepared. Preventative maintenance now will save money on expensive emergency repairs and wasted energy costs. When the chilly weather approaches you and your home will be ready. Check for drafts. Feel for drafts around the edges of windows and doors. A good tip is to use a lighted candle and if the flame flickers, there’s most likely a draft. If necessary, replace seals and repair caulking around window and door frames. Test home safety devices. Replace the batteries in all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide devices and test to make sure they’re working properly.

Heating System Maintenance. An annual inspection is important to make sure your heating system is working properly and operating at peak performance this winter. Clean the gutters. Now is a good time to clear your gutters. Hire a reputable company to remove leaves and debris from gutters and check for leaks. Install Rails. If you have steps at your front or back door, consider fitting a grab rail to help maintain your balance when walking on a slippery drive or footpath up to your front door.

Bedfordshire’s Domesday Mills Barton le Clay Mill.

T

his month I had all good and worthy intentions of writing a feature on one of our more centrally located watermills, that is still flourishing in some kind of trade after a thousand-year existence. The Olde Watermill at Barton-le-Clay seemed an ideal choice as much of the building and machinery still stands astride the mill race, and a flourishing business is operating in and around the site. There is a good selection of antique, craft and boutique shops, as well as a busy garden centre. For us Bedfordshire folk it is well positioned between Luton and Bedford so accessible for all. Absolutely perfect for my series tracing the survival of Bedfordshire's Domesday Mills, don't you think? Well it would be if they didn't seem to have mislaid the 950 years or so in between! In the Domesday Book following the Norman Conquest the entire manor, including the houses, people, land, meadows, oxen, ploughs, the watermill and everything else therein, was valued at a grand total of £10. Don’t scoff, that was some value in those days! The manor also included a total of 11 hides of land (roughly enough to provide food enough for 11 households) and it also contained a staggering 200 pigs. I will say that again. 200 pigs. Enough to gorge their way through the food supply of all 11 households and snuffle about grubbing up the entire mill meadow, but probably not likely to have eaten all of the mill records for the next millennium! 62

As a thriving business involving the sale of many antiques and historic artefacts, I would have expected some more freely available documentation about the old flour producing facilities since William the Conqueror came bounding along with his notebook. Having escaped the investigative, scavenging snouts of a double-century of walking bacon factories, he must have taken some further interest and left somebody in charge capable of keeping an eye on the place and ensuring its future. I mean, it certainly had one didn’t it? The place is still standing and one of the few that remain.

Guy Bolton Still, there you have it. Nice place. Very old. Decent shops within. Have a look at their website at www.oldewatermill.co.uk although you may have to visit if you wish to investigate its history.

Physiotherapy for pets D

id you know that physiotherapy can be used to help dogs and cats suffering from mobility problems? Physiotherapy is often used to rehabilitate a pet following an accident or surgical procedure. It is also useful for pets suffering with arthritis or with other long-term difficulties (such as limb loss or neurological conditions). Additionally, physiotherapy is suitable for working or competition dogs to help them reach their full physical potential and avoid injury. Chartered physiotherapists have qualified and worked as human physiotherapists before undertaking further rigorous training in the veterinary field. They work alongside veterinary surgeons and nurses to provide complete, holistic care. ACPAT Physiotherapists are used by the British equestrian team and endorsed by leading veterinary centres such as Fitzpatrick Referrals (Supervet!).

Physiotherapists can also give advice on adapting homes and lifestyles to help animals with mobility difficulties.

Treatments may include:

• Soft tissue and joint mobilisation and manipulation • Massage, myofascial and trigger point release • Laser, ultrasound, and muscle stimulation These treatments reduce pain, swelling and muscle spasm. This helps to encourage healing and improve the range of movement in joints. Physiotherapists can also give advice on adapting homes and lifestyles to help animals with mobility difficulties. If specific exercises and stretches will be of benefit, these can be demonstrated for pets and their owners to continue at home. Acorn House Veterinary Surgery is delighted to welcome Nadia Kopec to our team. Nadia is an ACPAT Category A Chartered Physiotherapist who owns and competes with her own dogs and horses. Nadia is based at Acorn House Veterinary Surgery and appointments can be booked via Reception in the usual way. Please contact the surgery on 01234 261839 for further information.

At Acorn House we stock a wide range of effective preventative and environmental flea control products. Our team will help you choose the most suitable products for your pet.

George (Approx 1 year old) Poor boy was rescued after suffering severe chemical burns and is currently recuperating

George We wouldn't normally advertise a cat for re-homing until they are ready but he needs an extra special home

George Understandably, George is a little nervous and needs a mature home where he can relax and be himself.

Lola (Approx 4 months old)

Smaller animals

She will thrive in a quieter home where she hasa little time and space to enjoy

If you’re looking for a pet, please consider re-homing one from an animal charity.

Kittens

Twinkletoes (Approx 1 year old)

Older cats

We have too many kittens looking for a home because owners fail to neuter their cats.

She is friendly and most comfortable with men, her last owner was a single man

Older cats are the hardest to re-home but can make superb pets

Stan (Approx 2 years old) He is not conventionally handsome – but it’s part of his quirky charm.

Bunny 1 (Approx 9 months old)

Bunny 2 (Approx 9 months old)

Bunny 3 (Approx 9 months old)

These 3 bunnies came as a group of 3, all very pretty little girls.

Min requirement for hutch is 6ft plus an ideally longer run

We could split these bunnies up, but won’t re-home a bunny on its own – as they do best with a companion.

Your Tarotscopes for November 2016... by Susan Peppiatt Scorpio

Time to make something worthwhile and long lasting; efforts put in this month show as worthwhile but need to be sustained, as a sense of being overwhelmed by the project can take over if allowed. The advice is to have a day away from the activity to help regain positivity of mind, before continuing.

Sagittarius

Happiness comes from remembering those that are not always close, and for many Sagittarians this is a poignant time of year to do exactly that. Follow up the feelings by making contact with people who are less seen but not less loved, because of their circumstances.

Capricorn

Something comes to light which makes sense of the last few months of difficulty and shows a way to come back to a sense of order. It’s also time to plan a holiday or a break for better times. Children, especially boys, show as a part of this month’s rich tapestry of emotions, needing more than usual from family in the way of help.

Aquarius

Changes which come this month have been half expected for some time, but are still surprising when they finally arrive in that they seem a lot more positive than at first .A lot seem work orientated and quite demanding but still worth the extra effort for future happiness and fulfilment. 68

Pisces

It’s time to bite the bullet and get on with tasks which cannot be ignored. Pisces can expect old problems to finally catch up with them this month, and should make sure that they are aware of the ins and outs of previous issues so that difficulties can be avoided this time. Lazing around is not recommended.

Aries

Excellent results can be expected in tests and examinations this November for Aries subjects, especially those who seem to miss out on all the good things in the normal course of life. Interviews are also well starred for new work or different types of work, this November and for a good while after.

Taurus

Money is better aspected this month although they can expect to have to work harder than usual for the extra cash. The pressures are slightly less on the mind, but more on the body for Taureans, so the best advice is to also make sure that plenty of sleep is possible.

Gemini

Travel is aspected and successful journeys shown this month for people born under the sign of Gemini. The only problem is having too much choice to make decisions easy. A money making venture also shows as coming forward but any advice would be to investigate before signing away any cash.

Cancer

This shows as a month to keep personal relationships a little distant, so that other activities can be completed. This is a lot harder than it sounds as others show as determined to stir things up just when peace and concentration are needed. Making plans for later in the year might be the best way to keep things on track.

Leo

Take things easy this month while preparing for future activity next month is the cards best advice for Leo subjects this November. A cosy home or plans to make a home more comfortable are also on the agenda and it shows as taking a lot of work before Christmas.

Virgo

Time to clear the decks this month of all the deadwood and all the unwanted rubbish that has accumulated over the space of the last few years, to help eradicate old wounds. It’s also time to take a few chances, without the usual worries of what other people will thinks.

Libra

Commitment and contracts are highlighted this month, with advice that concerns on the subject shouldn’t be ignored just to make things easy or quicker, as this is counterproductive in the longer term; address as soon as possible to get them sorted and under control.for a better month.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

y r o t c i v for Digging

T

his winter, many of us will start digging to prepare a vegetable plot or flower border for planting next spring. But the question may arise – why bother?

To save your back, do the digging in stages if you've a large area to cover. If you are autumn or winter digging, pick days when the ground isn't too hard or wet and leave it rough dug, letting the winter frosts break up the soil more and allowing birds to pick off soil pests.

Digging reaks up the soil, relieving compaction and helping to aerate it, making drainage better and allowing roots to penetrate so that plants grow better.

If you are working on an existing bed with established plants, just add a thin layer of organic matter to the surface, turning it in as you go, but don't dig down too much.

The main reason for digging, however, is to add plenty of organic matter such as well rotted manure or compost to improve soil structure and nutrients before planting. Fork out perennial weeds and other debris before you start.

Many organic vegetable gardeners use a no-dig approach, spreading large amounts of organic matter over the top of the soil each year, then waiting for the worms to pull the nutrients down into the soil, building up the quality and fertility of the soil, suppressing weeds and conserving water.

Generally soil needs to be dug only to one spade's depth when you are creating a new bed. Be warned, though, that when an area has been neglected, digging it over will lead to the emergence of weeds, as dormant seeds will start to germinate once exposed to daylight. If you are preparing the bed to plant trees, shrubs or perennials you can just leave it when you've dug it over. If you're preparing it for sowing seeds, or growing small plants, it's best to dig it over then rake the ground to a fine tilth resembling cake crumbs. 76

However, the beds are likely to have been dug deeply when they were first created. Alternatively the same result can be achieved without digging, by creating a raised bed, filling it with compost laid on existing soil. Don't tread on the soil, though, or it will become too compacted and defeat the object.

BEDFORD female; and a Cancer Research Raffle including top prizes donated to the Club. But the highlight of the afternoon – following the 46-33 win over the Dragons – was a post-match auction in which all of the replacement players match day shirts were auctioned off. Over £2000 was raised from the auction alone – which also included two pink cowboy hats signed by the whole squad – with Jake Sharp's jersey fetching a whopping £500 on its own.

I

t was a busy October at Goldington Road as Bedford Blues hosted three games, a rugby camp and the always popular Ladies Day in support of Cancer Research UK.

On Saturday 15th October, Bedford Blues turned Pink as they hosted the Dragons Premiership Select XV in the first round of the British and Irish Cup. On top of two-for-one ground entry for all ladies there was also a host of offers on the day in the Blues Marquee, including: Free glass of rosé wine on arrival in the marquee for the girls; Beauty treatments courtesy of 5th Avenue; Award winning cakes from Crumbs Sandwich and Cake Shop on Castle Road; Blind Bear Wine Stall with special drinks menu; Live music; a Baker Brothers Diamonds Prize Stall; Prizes for the best dressed 84

Everyone at the Blues wants to say a huge thank you to the fans who turned out in force on the day and helped the club raise a lot of money for Cancer Research UK. Bedford have two home games in November with the visit of Nottingham on Saturday 5th and a Friday Night Lights encounter against London Scottish on 25th. Buy discounted tickets online at www. bedfordrugby.co.uk. Elsewhere, the Bedford Blues Community Rugby Department is already having a huge impact on local schools, clubs and organisations just three months after its initial launch The department – which is headed by Head of Community Ben Gulliver – was set up following close work between the Bedford Blues Board, Director of

B

BLUES Rugby Mike Rayer and former player Matt Price who runs an organisation called Sports in Schools.

With over 250 schools and organisations across Bedfordshire, a fantastic opportunity was identified to build stronger links within the community, deliver high quality sports provision and provide sustained support to the next generation of rugby players who could one day pull on a Bedford Blues jersey.

Through the work of Gulliver, the Community Rugby Department is working with the likes of Camestone Lower School, Wootton Lower School, Cranfield Lower School and Cauldwell School in providing a range of packages, breakfast clubs, lunchtime clubs and after school clubs. The team also offer lesson support, PPA and a Rugby and Reading project along with specialist coaching sessions for established schools and universities such as Bedford Modern and the University of Bedfordshire's Women's team. Speaking about the work of the Community Department, Gulliver said: "For me this isn't just a job, it is a privilege and I take great pride in promoting the Blues within the community. There are a lot of things in the pipeline, we've just completed our second camp at Goldington Road and we are also working with Bromham Lower School. "Our 'Rugby and Reading' project is proving to be particularly popular with the schools which we work with. It is basically an opportunity for a Bedford Blues player or community coach to

help with reading within the normal timetable at selected schools. I personally attend Cranfield Lower School for an hour to read with a small group and then we head out for an hour of tag rugby straight after. It's had a real impact on the behaviour of the pupils and engagement in reading. "We've received a huge amount of backing from the club along with fantastic support from the Junior Blues who have helped to advertise our camps and in return we are proud to support their efforts in attracting more youngsters to the game. "The Community Rugby Department has proven to be a huge hit in Bedfordshire and we are all excited to continue its growth in the coming weeks, months and years."

Eagles The

S

eptember proved to be an excellent month for the Eagles as this EvoStik division one central campaign continued to gather pace. Following disappointing league results at Royston (1-0) and Aylesbury United (2-1), The Eagles picked up their game and finished September with style. Firstly, having performed excellently in the first half at home to Ashford Town (Middx), it will have come as a frustration to only be 2:0 up at half time. That frustration then turned to disappointment after the break as a number of defensive errors saw the lead slip and the Eagles draw the game 2:2. The following week, Bedford travelled to Aylesbury FC and Luke Knight scored the only goal as the Eagles came away with a 1:0 win. Still in search of their first home victory, AFC Dunstable visited the Eyrie on a beautiful late September evening and again the Eagles ran out winners, this time 2:1 to part avenge the FA Cup defeat in August. Into October and the winning run continued. Jon Taylor named a side capable of competing against strong pace, as the Eagles welcomed Petersfield Town to the Eyrie. After a tight first half, the hosts dominated the second and ran out 4:1 winners. The first full week of October saw the Eagles in cup action. First up was a local

derby against Kempston Rovers in the Southern League Cup. Both sides fielded changed teams, as they took the opportunity to allow fringe players to get game time. The Eagles proved stronger however, and ran out 2:0 winners. Having gone on a strong five game unbeaten run, winning four games on the trot, it was followed by massive disappointment on Saturday 8th October. The side travelled to Hanwell Town with a bounce in their step as the FA Trophy adventure began for another season. However, they returned with a crash, going down 4:0 to a side placed in the bottom third of the same league. Off the field and fundraising has continued to go well for the club and the next quiz is planned for Friday 18th November. The evening will start at 7:30pm, entrance is £6 a head which includes a ploughman’s supper, with a maximum team size of six. For further information, please contact Gerry on 01234 381213. Are you looking for somewhere to hold your event? The Wallace suite at the Eyrie could be your ideal venue. Whether it be party, wedding reception, fundraising event or anything, we have the deal for you. Please contact Angie or Ash Scutchings on 07767 488797 for further information. 87
