Alistair Burt, your Local MP... LEARNING LIFESAVING SKILLS IN A MODERN WORLD
O
ne of the delights of my job as an MP is being able to visit very many spring, summer and autumn fetes and fairs. I was very delighted and honoured to be asked to declare the Willington Fair open recently, and I was given a very stylish ride across the playing field in a vintage ambulance – very exciting!
area. If you have a bit more time why not consider First Responder training? There are opportunities with the East of England Ambulance Service, St Johns and other organisations.
The difference between that ambulance and today’s versions are now quite stark. Some rather basic kit that kept people alive and returned them to field hospitals seems a world apart from the high tech ambulances we see today. I was pleased to talk to some of the Community First Response volunteers on the day and was given the opportunity to learn how to use an Automated external defibrillators (AED) – the sort you will find a many of our villages and communities based in village halls, former phone boxes and shops. They are extremely straightforward to use and lifesaving.
Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP
Community first responders are volunteers who are trained to attend certain types of emergency calls in the area where they live or work. Their aim is to reach a potential life threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives. I know that we have many First Responders in NE Beds already, being that first contact in an emergency in their community, but it is also important that even more of us know how to use AEDs, and know where one is available in our 8
I really appreciated what I learnt at Willington, and enjoyed a super day in a community that had worked very hard to put together an excellent set of interests and entertainments. Well done to all, and to everyone who has put time and effort into their community fairs this season.

Want to beat the end of
S
ometimes the cheapest time to book can be as soon as you get back from your holiday!
Many returning holidaymakers immediately plan their next dose of sun, sea and sightseeing to beat the back-to-work blues and approaching winter season. Although it’s not cut and dried, booking before the sand in your toes has washed away can save money. For instance, we found booking flights and car hire for Croatia in August 2017 for August 2018 was 25% cheaper than the same trip in 2017 booked in January. If you’re considering booking now for 2018, here are the need-to-knows: • Booking packages early can net special deals. Tour operators can offer discounts for booking way ahead – currently Thomson, First Choice and Jet2holidays are offering free child places for summer 2018. However, waiting till the last minute can also pay off as prices often plummet, though you’ve MUCH less choice.
• You can book BA, Virgin etc flights NOW for summer 2018. Many airlines release seats 11-12 months ahead, with cheaper seats often
10
Money Matters
By Martin Lewis released early. Although you can’t be sure these will be the very cheapest, as prices could drop later, you’ll likely at least get a decent price if you book as soon as all airlines on that route make seats available. Check at http://www. moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-flights • Easyjet and Ryanair are NOT yet available for summer 2018. They’re only currently selling tickets till March 2018 and don’t publish release dates – so it may be worth waiting. • Manipulate hotel prices with our rebook tricks. Rates fluctuate but if you find a good deal on a room with free cancellation then grab it, monitor prices and cancel and rebook if it drops. Meanwhile, some booking sites match prices if they fall later. • Get travel insurance as soon as you book. ALWAYS get travel insurance immediately. It doesn’t cost any more to get a policy early, and you’re then covered if you have to cancel any time BEFORE your holiday begins, eg, if you or a relative falls ill. www.moneysavingexpert.com/ insurance/cheap-travel-insurance More early booking information and top travel tips at http://www. moneysavingexpert.com/travel/traveltips#cheapesttimetobook

Our libraries are a fantastic local service where you can meet with family and friends, browse the stock, borrow books, use a PC or access free Wifi, and following extensive consultation last year opening hours at all five libraries will be reorganised with an overall increase of over 40 hours, including Bedford Central Library opening on Sundays. With the introduction of Library Plus at Bedford Central Library, Bromham Library and Wootton Library you will have extra choice and flexibility.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Celebrating 35 years and looking for dog lovers to become volunteer puppy trainers
A
bout Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a registered charity that trains dogs to alert deaf people to household sounds and danger signals such as the doorbell, telephone and smoke alarms – providing life-changing independence and confidence.
The role of a Volunteer Dog Trainer is to look after a gorgeous pup from the age of 8 weeks until 14-16 months. Volunteers provide the puppy with skills and obedience training, take them along to weekly puppy classes and into as many different environments as possible. All volunteers are fully supported by the Charity’s expert dog trainers, who provide guidance every step of the way.
It is a national service with no charge is made to recipients. Since its inception in 1982, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People have placed more than 1750 hearing dogs. The Charity will be celebrating its 35th year this year.
Alec & Catherine Balchin, Volunteer Dog Trainers, say: “ Zeb, the cocker spaniel is our third puppy from Hearing Dogs. Like the previous two he is very much part of our family with everyone taking part in his socialising and training. We have made many new friends from his daily dog walks and through meeting fellow volunteers. We are welcomed everywhere we go – at shops, cafes and sports clubs – to the point that we get told off if he isn’t with us!
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is actively recruiting dog lovers who would like to take care of their adorable puppies and dogs in Bedfordshire.
The enjoyment we get from watching them grow from an 8 week old puppy to fully qualified assistance dog makes us want to do it again. We would recommend volunteer dog training to anyone and knowing how life changing they will be makes it all the more worthwhile”. Jo Ellam, Hearing Dogs’ local Puppy Training Instructor says: “If you live in the area and are looking for a new challenge, then why not give something back and meet some loveable life-changing puppies along the way? We already have a number of committed volunteers in the local area and are very keen to hear from some more! As long as you have a car, a secure, private garden, and enough time to train a puppy or dog on a daily basis, then we would absolutely love to hear from you. You really can make such an enormous difference.”
To find out more about volunteer dog training opportunities, please contact the volunteering team: volunteer@ hearingdogs.org.uk, 01844 348122 or visit www.hearingdogs.org.uk/volunteer

Impetigo
T
he first time I came across impetigo my son was in nursery school. I hadn’t got a clue what it was. I was most embarrassed when a member of staff phoned me to ask me to collect him.
What is it? Impetigo is an extremely common skin disease, generally caused by staphylococcus bacteria. What does it look like? It appears as a small, itchy red spot, often on the face around the mouth or nose. It quickly develops into a blister, containing yellow-gold fluid. The blister becomes crusty and weeps, and smaller itchy patches often develop around the first one as the infection spreads outwards.
22
Who is likely to get it? Children, or those who work with them, particularly in nursery or school settings, and especially if they have eczema. Also people with diabetes or compromised immune systems. How is it treated? GPs generally give antibiotic cream, or in severe cases, oral antibiotics. Remove the scabs and clean the skin and allow to air-dry before applying any cream. Can my child still go to school? As impetigo is highly contagious keep them of school until the scabs have fallen off and the sores are no longer weeping. If they are on oral antibiotics they are generally considered non-infectious after two days of treatment. Is impetigo dangerous? No, generally it’s just a nuisance, but there is a rare side effect called glomerulonephritis. This is a kidney disease. Seek medical advice if the sufferer experiences severe headaches or brown-coloured urine.

O
Senior Snippets Home safety check
ne of the biggest fears for elderly people is having a fall or an accident in the home. Here are a few tips on how to minimise the risks. Falling downstairs, tripping over loose tiles, flooring and items, suffering loss of balance or slipping on wet floors could all be avoided with a little forward planning.
Install grip rails and sturdy bannisters, make sure staircases are well lit, check flooring and equipment are up to standard and carry out repairs. Hypothermia may not sound like an accident but it is avoidable. Wear several layers of thin clothing, eat light regular meals, take drinks throughout the day and move about regularly.
Be safe with fire – get a smoke alarm, test it regularly and always have a planned escape route. Avoid burns and scalds by not carrying very hot liquids, ensure your hot water bottle is of good quality and use rear hotplates on your cooker to prevent knocking pans off. If you have a fall, firstly don’t panic. If you are able to get up, do so very slowly, holding onto a firm object and putting a soft object under your knee if possible to take the strain to stand. Then rest a while. If you are hurt try to get comfortable until help arrives. Keep warm and try to move position regularly. Home Instead Senior Care, 106A Bedford road, Wootton, Bedford, MK43 9JB. Preheat the oven to Gas 3 / 175C CM Place the flour, cocoa powder, caster sugar, baking powder, salt and butter into an electric mixer (or MY use a handheld whisk) and beat on a slow speed CY until the mixture looks grainy, like sand. CMY
In a separate jug whisk the milk, egg and vanilla extract together. Pour half into the flour mixture. Beat well to combine and make sure you get rid of any lumps. Add the second half of the egg and milk mixture and beat until the mixture is smooth (about two minutes). Spoon the mixture into 12 paper cupcake cases and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until cooked. Set aside to cool. To make the icing: Beat the icing sugar, butter and cocoa powder together by hand or in an electric mixer. Add the milk a little at a time then beat well until the mixture is light and fluffy. Use this to cover the cooled cakes. To finish the spiders: Pour the chocolate sprinkles on to a saucer. Take each iced cake and dip the icing into the sprinkles to make the hairy spider’s body. Place two ‘eyeballs’ on each cupcake. Use a skewer to poke 4 holes on opposite sides of each cupcake; insert liquorice strips into each hole.

Sunday
doesn’t have to be the end of the weekend!
I
f you want to extend your weekend and fancy a relaxing break away with good food and stylish surroundings then you don’t need to go far. The Embankment Hotel set in a stunning location offering a ‘Sunday Staycation.’ A warm and friendly welcome on arrival and an early 2pm check in offered plenty of time to relax in the room or take a walk along the river. Then still time to sit outside with a chilled vino and a beer, watch the world go by and enjoy the view. Time flew until dinner and the menu at The Embankment never fails to delight. Tempted by the range of choices including gourmet burger specials, fresh fish and the succulent Aubrey Allen steaks, the choosing took a fair while but two crisp glasses of the South African Chenin Blanc Voigner seemed to help! Starters of warm, crispy Camembert Pan fried Native Scallops & Monkfish with Artichoke and Red Pepper risotto were opted for. Excellent choices, especially the Scallops as they offered a different twist when accompanied by the risotto – filling and very tasty.
FOOD & DRINK REVIEW One of the best steaks ever followed… a 28 day aged Rump Cap Steak cooked to perfection. Simply dressed with a peppercorn sauce on the side, chunky chips and fresh rocket salad, it was delicious. The Herb crusted Lamb loin was a good contender and also perfectly cooked; accompanied by tender and well suited vegetables of baby carrots and leeks. With a full favoured jus, it was a succulent and very generous dish. Delicious dessert choices included Chocolate & Salted Peanut Brownie and warm Bakewell Tart with clotted cream, but a refreshing Lemon and Mango Sorbet seemed perfect. The Espresso Martini was my choice; not exactly dessert but not having a sweet tooth, this is always a tasty treat. The cheese boards were amazing too. The rooms have all been recently refurbished to a very high standard and are beautifully elegant, chic and contemporary with plenty of space to relax with flat screen televisions and tea and coffee facilities. The extra touches of antique furniture add to the style. With a river view, it felt like a special space to be and was very quiet too, all you need for a relaxing, undisturbed night. A great breakfast menu, spoilt for choice with everything from American style pancakes to full English. So, full English and Free-range Poached Eggs & Toasted Sourdough it was! Finally time to leave, a lovely treat and was a day and evening of wonderful food and relaxation. One to remember and certainly one to recommend. Castle Panic You’ve built your castle in a lovely pleasant clearing and are admiring it when you suddenly discover the forest surrounding the clearing is teeming with Orcs and Goblins all wanting to get rid of your nasty stone structure. Castle Panic is a co-operative game where in you have to fight off the attacking monsters by working together to get your defensive forces in the right position. This is all done by soldiers that can attack at various ranges, archers for example can attack the furthest monster while swordsman can only kill the nearest ones, being used at the right moment. You have a hand of cards & can trade one every turn and play as many as you can trying to get the right cards into the hands of the person who can use them best. The monsters are keen to destroy your walls to get to your towers and use all sorts of nefarious means to do so, outsmarting them is key to winning… but so is a little bit of luck! Castle Panic is a simple game that could easily be played by a family but also has enough strategy to be a fun, light game for an adult gaming group as well

n October 7th and 8th, nine BedPop Fun Palaces will be popping up in Bedford, bringing free arts, culture and science events to the town centre as part of the international Fun Palaces weekend. Bedford will be one of over 200 towns and cities taking part all over the world. This year, BedPop has teamed up with Autism Bedfordshire to offer a number of autism-friendly events. There will be sessions with artist AnneMarie Stijelia, Bloodhound rocket cars, engineers from Network Rail and artists from Bedford Creative Arts. More information and booking details at www.bedpop.co.uk. The programme of events is really exciting and is taking place in lots of different locations, including The Higgins Bedford, Panacea Museum, John Bunyan Museum, Basement @Bunyan, St Cuthbert’s Hall, Rogan’s Books, the Quarry Theatre, Slide Records and Bedford Central Library. Erica Roffe of BedPop said, “We’re collaborating with world-class, locallybased artists, school children and local businesses to offer dozens of free events for visitors to take part in. We’re thrilled to have added some autism-friendly events to the programme too.” BedPop is also partnering with the Forest of Marston Vale – a superb visitor attraction.
Taking inspiration from the Higgins’ exhibition ‘A Celebration of Trees in British Art’, there will be leaf identification walks in the grounds of the museum with volunteers from the Forest. Artist Lisa Tilley will then work with the children to create fabulous leaf crowns, surrounded and inspired by the wonderful artwork in the Wixamtrees gallery at the Higgins. Bedford Creative Arts and artist Maria Anastassiou will be running workshops to contribute to a huge ‘living mural’ that will be projected onto the wall of the William Harpur Gallery at the Higgins. Maria recently ran the same workshop at the Whitney, NYC. Ready Steady Roll will bring hundreds of brilliant board games to the library for the weekend and science students from Goldington Academy and Kimberley College in Wootton will be running hands-on science demonstrations and experiments in the foyer of the Higgins while Castle Newnham School will run singing, music and drama workshops. “Thanks to generous funding from the Harpur Trust, we have been able to bring Bilimnakhwe Arts’ multi-cultural production of the Tempest to the Quarry Theatre,” said Erica. “Not only will be have a free professional performance of the show, but we are also offering theatre workshops too.” BedPop Fun Palaces is also generously supported by Woodfines solicitors, Slide Records, You Can Book Me and in collaboration with Bedford Borough Council. t's on WhataMK Theatre this month Full cast announced for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sunset boulevard
Starring Ria Jones as ‘Norma Desmond’ and Danny Mac as ‘Joe Gillis’
M
ichael Harrison, David Ian and Curve are delighted to announce full casting for the forthcoming UK and Ireland tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s award-winning musical SUNSET BOULEVARD. Directed by Nikolai Foster, the tour will come to Milton Keynes Theatre, Tue 28 Nov – Sat 2 Dec.
Joining the previously announced Ria Jones as ‘Norma Desmond’ and Danny Mac as ‘Joe Gillis’ will be Adam Pearce as ‘Max Von Mayerling’, Molly Lynch as ‘Betty Schaefer’, Dougie Carter as ‘Artie Green’ and Carl Sanderson as ‘Cecil B DeMille’. The rest of the company includes Bernadette Bangura, Matthew Barrow, Benjamin Chambers, Joanna Goodwin, Kristoffer Hellström, Iain Mattley, James Meunier, Gemma Naylor, Fiona O’Carroll, Joanna O’Hare, Jessica Paul, Sam Peggs, Tom Vincent and Barney Wilkinson.
One of the all-time great musicals, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award®-winning (Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical) masterpiece SUNSET BOULEVARD is a compelling story of romance and obsession, based on Billy Wilder’s legendary film, with Don Black and Christopher Hampton’s wonderful book and lyrics. This much-loved score includes the title number Sunset Boulevard, With One Look, As If We Never Said Goodbye, The Greatest Star Of All and The Perfect Year and will be performed by a full orchestra. In her mansion on Sunset Boulevard, faded, silent-screen goddess, Norma Desmond, lives in a fantasy world. Impoverished screen writer, Joe Gillis, on the run from debt collectors, stumbles into her reclusive world. Persuaded to work on Norma’s ‘masterpiece’, a film script that she believes will put her back in front of the cameras, he is seduced by her and her luxurious life-style. Joe becomes entrapped in a claustrophobic world until his love for another woman leads him to try and break free with dramatic consequences.

The Journey from Bunyan to the Brickworks Exhibition The Basement At Bunyan, Tuesday 24th October
The exhibition is the culmination of a 6 month Heritage Lottery funded partnership between The Bedford Chronicles and the John Bunyan Museum.
The project combined two key aspects of Bedfordshire heritage; the journey John Bunyan envisioned as he was persecuted and imprisoned for his beliefs, and the journeys of the people who came to work at Stewartby Brickworks after
WW2, often escaping persecution and hardship to aim for a better life. The project worked closely with partner schools as well as the Bedford community to create the exhibition Pride Inspiration Hope. The exhibition will display artwork created by schools including two new ‘stained glass’ windows as well as artefacts collected from the community. Visitors will be able to view a new film shot as part of this project, which records the memories of the people who came to work at the brickworks and their families. This exhibition celebrates the contribution made to Bedford by people living 350 years apart yet sharing a common bond. The exhibition runs from Tuesday 24th October until Saturday 4th November. Entry is free and is open to all. Open 11 am to 4 pm (except for Sundays and Mondays) To find out more visit www.bedfordchronicles.co.uk/TheJourney

Review Hitman’s Bodyguard
Bringing together two of the coolest fast talking actors in Hollywood would seem to be an idea that would not have taken so long to come to fruition. Now we finally have Samuel L Jackson and Ryan Reynolds channelling previous roles (Jackson pretty much all his iconic characters and Reynolds mainly Deadpool) to bring us a high concept action comedy that will actually deliver a lot of both those genres. The plot on which the action and comedy is hung on is fairly slim, Jackson is Kincaid, the world’s best assassin about to testify against a war criminal, while Reynolds is Bryce at one time the best bodyguard in the world and now called in to get Kincaid to the court in Amsterdam safely. Hitman’s Bodyguard is a throwback to the great buddy movies from the 80’s & 90’s where two characters who are fundamentally different have to work together whether they want to or not and is as funny as the best of them. Jackson and Reynolds really spark off each other and the repartee between them is constantly funny as they fight with each other as much as they do the mercenaries hunting them down.

Review When I Was Invisible by Dorothy Koomson
This novel tells the story of two girls with the same name. Veronica (Roni) Harper and Veronika (Nika) Harper met when they were eight years old and knew they were immediately destined to become ballerinas

However, life doesn’t always go as planned and both girls, now in their thirties are living invisible lives: one is a nun and one is living homeless on the streets of Birmingham. Neither planned to be there and the story of how they got there gradually unfolds, told in the first person by both Roni and Nika. What ultimately lies at the heart of this is a betrayal that ran so deep it destroyed both friendships and lives. As Roni leaves the convent overwhelmed by guilt and seeks out Nika to make amends the novel builds to a tense climax as the true nature of the betrayal is revealed and the many layers of their lives are peeled back. Some choose to be invisible in our busy society, others feel invisible and lost because of the way they are treated. This moving novel reminds us to listen to others and pay attention to their lives.

fireworks Getting ready for
A
s the firework season approaches, we need to remember that our furry friends can find the loud noises and flashes of light very frightening. What can we do to help?
Keep pets indoors
Try to walk dogs before dusk and keep cats indoors after dark. Make sure both dogs and cats are microchipped so that you can be reunited with them if they do become startled and bolt.
Make the house feel safe
Drawing the curtains, having the television or radio on, and acting calmly yourself will help to minimise the effect of fireworks on your pet.
Provide a safe hiding place
Many dogs and cats choose to hide away when the fireworks start. Help your pet by providing a safe, enclosed space well in advance of the firework season. Dogs often appreciate a crate/ cage with the door removed and a blanket over the top. Cats like to be up high, in igloo-style beds. During the day, place treats inside the hiding place for your pet to find, helping them to see the hiding place as a place where good things happen. Try not to disturb your pet when they are hiding.
Talk to your vet
Pets with more severe noise phobias will need further help. A new medication to ease firework fear in dogs was licensed at the end of 2016 and this can be prescribed by a vet. Any pet that suddenly becomes worried by noises when previously they were unconcerned should have a thorough health check because some medical conditions can cause or worsen noise phobias.
Make sure both dogs and cats are microchipped so that you can be reunited with them if they do become startled and bolt. To advertise with us please get in touch – www.bedslifemagazine.co.uk

Your Tarotscopes for October 2017... by Susan Peppiatt Libra
Aquarius
A month that’s more loving than usual, with feelings of contentment and being cared for with genuine feelings of happiness and fulfilment for many; others have to decide what they really want before happiness of the same kind comes. It’s pointless going in one direction blindly if true happiness lies on the other path.
Life is putting you through the same things again and again, without acceptable solutions. To get a on a different route, you need a new destination or start point, otherwise things are forever the same. A different life is there to be had, but be prepared to go on unchartered roads to get it.
Scorpio
Money and work and travel all figure, with dilemma over which is more important.. Something about a holiday which wasn’t a holiday at all makes the thought of somewhere new important. Keeping work happy is necessary even if you intend to move on, which seems a constant thought over the last few months.
A little uncertainty brings feeling of insecurity but also excitement especially around something new which is about to be taken on or learned. It’s a worthwhile thing to stick with despite the fears, leading to new feelings of contentment within the next six months or so. Just don’t give in now.
Sagittarius
A feeling of success and happiness is within reach, knowing you are in the right place, with the right people around you; even if those people aren’t so sure where it’s all going. The advice is to be confident rather than needy, and everything works out pretty well, fairly soon.
Capricorn
Exhilarating times in a relationship which has a lot of expectations from past connection, but not a lot of stability. Go with the rollercoaster as it’s not a boring ride, and ends up at a safe place eventually. Just don’t try to get off halfway or make things stop as that’s where the problems begin.
Pisces
Aries
Taking the helm is both exhilarating and tiring, but decisions which you make this month are some which stick for a long time to come. You may feel under pressure from others at times, but this shows as needed to make you fulfil your true potential, so suck it up, and just get on with it. You’ll be very glad you did!
Taurus
A bit of fear comes in regards health and previous worries which haven’t fully gone away. Nothing shows as fully resolved for you personally, but sit firm and wait the month out for better things. Don’t stir things up too much, as something comes to light, which clears up many issues at once in a happier and easier way.
Gemini
Annoying people seems to be around at every turn this month, but despite the irritation they cause, there is a lot to be learned by sticking fairly close and keeping an eye on what they do. Most of this can be turned to your advantage as long as you remain watchful, and ready to act when the feeling is right.
Cancer
A lot of thought about a home or school move shows around those born under this sign for October. There is also a lot of calm decisions to be made before a move is taken on. For others, a soul mate connection from the past comes to mind, seeming to make a reconnection probable before the year ends.
Leo
Strong feelings of partnerships and new places shows, mostly to do with new people. Health problems look in the past and new horizons beckon, in activities and places which are a little alien to you. Huge fun and quite tiring, so make good choices, there is always next month to continue the journey.
Virgo
Letting go of old fears and taking new chances with life and people around you show strongly. While it’s certainly not boring, it’s also a challenge for those who have had their fingers burned before with relationships or jobs. Don’t think too hard as you will put mental barriers up which otherwise wouldn’t exist.

Phosphites
GARDENING
P
hosphites are sold as a fertiliser (potassium phosphite) to stimulate plant vitality and remediate potassium or phosphite soil deficiencies. However, phosphites have a unique property in that when applied to a plant they “switch on” a plants defence system in a manner similar to the human immune system which can be boosted by an appropriate vaccine.
This is important as it now means plants can be vaccinated or immunized by treating with phosphites as either a foliar spray, soil drench or bark spray which in turn will protect them or at least reduce the severity of pest and disease attack. Application of phosphites enhances the activity of the plant’s own defense systems. This includes the formation of ‘necrotic blocking zones’ (dead cells limiting spread of a resultant lesion), rapid changes within the cell, production of ethylene and hypersensitive cell death (death of infected cells), production of lytic enzymes, thickening of cell walls and phytoalexin (antibody) accumulation in infected plants. Interestingly,
when concentrations of phosphite residues are no longer detected there is still protection within the crop (an “immunisaton” type effect). Phosphites can be used in the following: 1. Control of soil borne diseases such as Phytophthora root rot or Armillaria honey fungus 2. As a spray directly onto any bleeding cankers observed on the tree trunk 3. As a means of enhancing the disease resistance of trees especially if a disease is known to be widespread within the area. 4. To enhance callus formation after pruning and so protect against wound decay fungi. 5. To promote tree vitality 6. To enhance drought and waterlogging resistance of trees.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

GARDENING
An apple

O
ne bite of a ripe, crisp apple picked straight off the tree is enough of a mouth-watering experience to make most gardeners want to grow at least one variety.
well-rotted organic matter before planting and mulch and water through the growing season. Apples prefer a sheltered, frost-free position in full sun, though providing they receive half a day’s sunshine in the growing season they will tolerate some shade.
Apples are the taste of autumn and there are many apple events at this time of year, inviting people to try new varieties and offering growing and care advice. Apples are not difficult to grow and there are enough varieties to cater for virtually any amount of space you have.
Once established, your apple tree will need very little care throughout the year, but do keep it weed-free and water it during dry spells when the fruit starts to swell, particularly if it is newly planted or in a container. In early spring sprinkle a balanced general fertiliser around the base. To ensure the best crop, prune the tree every year.
They can be grown in a range of forms, including traditional open-centred trees, cordons (single stem with short side-shoots) and espaliers (trained to grow on a flat plane, often symmetrical and against a wall or fence). Choose your tree according to the space available. There is also a wide range of rootstocks, from dwarfing to vigorous, but for a medium-sized bush tree or a cordon, choose the semi-dwarfing M26 rootstock. To crop well, apple trees also need pollination from another tree, so be sure to choose varieties from the same or a close pollination group. Bare-root trees can be planted when dormant, from late autumn until early spring. Apples thrive in a well-drained soil, at least 60cm (2ft) deep. Add 66
Apple trees can suffer from a variety of common problems such as brown rot and apple scab, often derived from poor levels of calcium, erratic watering or wet summers. The RHS guide offers advice on how to alleviate these problems. Most apples will be ready to pick sometime between August and October, depending on the variety. As with most fruit, the obvious way of testing if an apple is ready for picking is to taste it. The other telltale sign is if there are a few lying on the ground around the tree (called windfalls). The fruit should have swelled to a good size and started to colour up. Full details of how to grow your own apples and other fruit and vegetables can be found at www.rhs.org.uk
