Wildlife on Bedfordshire’s waterways
T
he main river arteries of Bedfordshire are home to many different forms of wildlife from fish populations to mammals, such as water voles and otters. Maintaining river health is vital to these waterways and the Wildlife Trust regularly remove pernicious invasive plants such as water soldier and Himalayan balsam from various sites across the county. From research carried out by the Wildlife Trust, there are small populations of water vole close to the Cambridgeshire border at Potton and Sandy (possibly linked) and also at Luton; isolated sightings are known from elsewhere. There is some suggestion that the small isolated populations which remain may be gradually disappearing, but survey effort in recent years has declined as funding for dedicated water vole conservation work has dried up, so hard evidence is lacking.
This will include information on species distribution both native/rare species and invasive species as well as hydrological features which have an impact on wildlife including erosion, silt deposits, channel narrowing, etc. which will assist with the river restoration projects. A network of volunteers across the county is needed to help monitor and enhance our waterways. If you live in Bedfordshire or regularly visit any of the waterways in the county and would be interested in being involved, please email Penelope.chaney@wildlifebcn.org.uk
Penelope Chaney has recently started a new role as Water for Wildlife Officer in Bedfordshire and will now be concentrating on Water for Wildlife, a collaborative project involving local Wildlife Trusts, Anglian Water and other partners which will focus on wetlands and wetland wildlife, both at a very local level and at a wider scale.
The Bedfordshire mammal group are also looking for volunteers to help with otter monitoring. Contact Amanda on mammal-group-secretary@bnhs.org.uk www.bedsmammalgroup.co.uk
Information will be collected about the state of Bedfordshire’s rivers, brooks and other waterbodies to help understand more about our local wildlife and the threats it faces and to allow us to concentrate our work where it is most needed.
The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire works to make our three counties a place where nature matters, where wildlife can flourish and enrich the lives of the people who live here: with your help we care for local wildlife.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Punishing Government cuts have created a full-blown funding crisis for local services. Tough decisions are now unavoidable, as the impact of relentless, ongoing cuts combines with growing need for social care services. Despite already achieving savings of £90 million the Council needs to identify further savings of £27.5 million to provide services to the residents of Bedford Borough. Priory Country Park
Cloverdale Retreat Café
T
he Cloverdale Retreat Café opened its doors in July with the grand opening performed by Mayor Dave Hodgson on Tuesday 6th September. The café is open to the public seven days a week from 10am to 4pm; serving a range of teas, coffee, savoury snacks and cakes. Owners Glenda and Steve also hope to launch a new menu of hot food and chef’s specials as their customer base grows. The new café seats forty inside with additional seating for over twenty customers at outside tables; and the team have plans to double this number as soon as possible. It benefits from the quiet, tranquil atmosphere of the park, with great a view across the lake. The team at the Cloverdale Retreat Café have been approached by various clubs and associations who wish to use the new café as a meeting place either before or after their activities in Priory Country Park; and they are happy to talk to anyone regarding the possible use of the café for specific events.
8
Owner Glenda Mansfield has many years’ experience in catering, having founded Cloverdale Catering in 1986. Glenda and her partner Steve have themselves been keen users of the park for 12 years, often walking over 10 miles per day in and around the area. The part of the building which is the café was previously the Visitors Information Centre and is absolutely ideal because of the great view of the large lake and the close proximity to the public car park and children’s play area. Every visitor to the park will be most welcomed to the Cloverdale Retreat whether families, walkers, bikers, joggers, bird watchers and not least dog walkers. Whilst dogs cannot enter the building owners can take a seat on a picnic bench outside the front windows. The staff are more than happy to take orders and wait on customers outside. Alternatively food and drink can be served through the window.

MP COLUMN
Views from
Alistair Burt, your Local MP... This month – Summer
R
ecently I was the guest of those involved with the Ivel Sprinter at their anniversary tea at Biggleswade Conservative Club to celebrate twenty five years of their excellent bus. The Sprinter is the voluntary service operated by the East Beds Community Bus Ltd., and its story is a great example of what can be done to readjust a public service when conditions change.
Twenty five years ago, United Counties announced a withdrawal of certain buses in the Biggleswade area, affecting a number of villages around the town. This was, and is, nothing new. The change in transport over the last few decades has been huge. Many more cars has meant a reducing number of people dependant on public transport. But for those who did need it, they had to live with a vicious circle of fewer services attracting fewer people, thus requiring more restructuring to save costs, and thus more reductions in service. There have been a variety of different answers over the years – subsidised fares, subsidised routes, the wholescale ‘Fares Fair’ policy of London Transport some years ago, even the paying of people to have taxi services, as it became cheaper to subsidise the individual user rather than the bus itself. And community buses have been another answer, with the ‘Sprinter’ one of the best examples. A group of volunteers set up to explore the finances of funding their own bus, and with the help of the County Council, and Beds Rural Community Charity set up the services we see today, connecting East Beds towns and villages on a regular basis. (for a 10
full timetable see www.ivelsprinter.org.uk). It is a fantastic and successful answer to the dilemma of public transport and it was very good to see the voluntary drivers and others behind the services being praised and thanked at the celebration the other day. We are lucky in the county also to have the dedication and expertise of those like Stephen Sleight, the Transport Team Leader at BRCC who, ever since the day I first met him some fifteen years ago has impressed upon me his determination to do all he can to ensure accessible public transport remains available for our rural community. From community libraries to pubs, people have been responding to changes in public services by working ever more inventively with public authorities to keep the best and try something new. A Sprinter cannot be the answer to every transport dilemma, but hats off to those twenty five years ago who wouldn’t let a local service go, and created a bit of their own legend in its place! On behalf of my constituents, thank you Ivel Sprinter, and all behind you.

Money matters By Martin Lewis
A
Cut costs on your Energy bills
ll the big six energy providers – British Gas, EDF, Eon, Npower, Scottish Power and SSE –cut prices to their standard tariffs; but without any question you can always find a better deal – sometimes by over £300 a year. 70% of the UK population are on these tariffs – so why should you switch?
1) It’s quick and easy to switch
So at the very least do a comparison and if you really don’t want to switch at least move to your supplier’s cheapest. It worth noting some firms also operate under more than one name, for example British Gas is also Scottish Gas and Sainsbury’s Energy.
Quick Q&A
I’ve only got electricity, can I save? There are cheap deals that allow electricity-only switching. Again, just do a comparison, same for economy 7.
Slashing the amount you pay for energy really isn’t difficult. It takes minutes to find your cheapest, then it’s switched over in 17 days. Those who worry about switching, don’t – it’s the same pipes, gas, meter and safety – the only thing that changes is price and customer service.
I’m on prepay (key or card meter) – can I switch? Yes, a comparison and switch will help. Yet a normal billed meter paying fixed monthly direct debits is far cheaper. So, it’s worth considering if you can change to a normal billed meter, where usage is measured.
2) Use a comparison site but do it the right way
I’m in credit with my energy firm, will I get it back if I leave? They should give you this money once you’ve switched. Many do automatically, but make sure you ask. In the past, they operated a ‘don’t ask, don’t get’ policy, so if you’ve switched previously, it may be worth calling your old supplier to check.
As your savings depends on where you live and what you use, there’s no one winner. Put your details into a comparison site and it’ll show your best deal. To do this, you need your address, your current tariff and your usage. If you don’t have any info – just guess! While you may not get the perfect result, if you’re on a standard tariff you’ll save substantially. Compare at www. CheapEnergyClub.com
3) If you don’t want to change supplier, change tariff.
Many confuse changing tariffs with changing companies, but you don’t necessarily have to. 12

this October
O
n Friday 21 October, the UK will be turning pink once again and we would love you to join in and let yourself get pinky! Every year, wear it pink raises around £2 million during Breast Cancer Awareness Month for the UK’s largest breast cancer charity, Breast Cancer Now. This year, with your help, we want to make it bigger, brighter and bolder than ever before. When you join wear it pink, you become part of a collective force of scientists, supporters and people affected by breast cancer. Together, by funding cutting-edge research, the aim is to ensure no one dies from breast cancer by 2050.
How? It’s simple – just wear something pink and donate whatever you can. The money raised will fund world-class breast cancer researchers across the UK and Ireland. Together, they’re working to discover how to prevent breast cancer, how to detect it earlier and how to treat it effectively at every stage to try and stop the disease taking lives. You will receive a free fundraising pack containing everything you need to make your wear it pink a success plus exclusive access to your very own ‘My Resources’ page where you can download and print posters and fundraising materials online as well as order extra materials that will be sent straight to your door!

Which Therapy?
I
f you have ever suffered with back pain or neck stiffness, had an accident that left you in discomfort weeks later, or perhaps overdone things in the gym, you may have experienced musculoskeletal pain.
This affects the muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. The muscles may feel overworked or pulled and burning or twitching may also be present. Pins and needles can accompany this as well as general fatigue and disrupted sleep. Repetitive movements, overuse, bad posture and prolonged immobilisation can also cause problems. So what can help‌?
Physiotherapy
Using movement, exercise, manual therapy, education and advice, physiotherapists help patients to recover from injuries and manage long-term conditions such as arthritis. They can work with athletes preparing for sporting events and help with their recovery afterwards.
Chiropractic
Chiropractic therapy specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions involving the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, especially those related to the spine.
Osteopathy
Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. It can also help with digestive or respiratory problems and other seemingly unrelated complaints.
Massage
Gentle massage is beneficial for relaxing body and mind. Deep tissue and sports massage both involve firm touch and work deeper into the soft tissues. Massage helps improve the circulation of blood and lymph around the body and reduce tension. The firmer types can break down scar tissue built up in the aftermath of an injury, leading to faster recovery.
Pilates, Yoga and Stretching
Both are excellent ways to ease into an exercise regime and can strengthen weak muscle groups and stretch tight areas. If you have never done it before, speak to the instructor first.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a form of complementary or alternative medicine based on the stimulation of specific points along the body, usually involving the application of heat, pressure or thin needles. It uses concepts of Chi (energy) and its flow through channels referred to as meridians.
Acupressure
Based on the principles of acupuncture, acupressure replaces the use of needles with physical pressure of the hand, elbow, or fingertips, and can also involve traditional small devices to apply pressure on different points on the surface of the body. 21

Ink tattoo studio. It is the brainchild of 23 year old Justin Moore who has teamed up with experienced barber Pasq Marinaro, 48, who has been cutting hair in Bedford and Kempston for more than 25 years. Speaking about the new business, Justin said: “I had been working at my brother’s business and there was an old building out the back that I had always wanted to transform into a barber shop. The opportunity came along to do it earlier this year and we have completely transformed it into the new premises.’’
J
M Barbers is a brand new Kempston barbershop, offering a more traditional approach to cutting men’s hair.
Incorporating The Changing Man, JM Barbers is based in the High Street, just behind Kempston
Pasq, who trained at Nicholas Anthony, added: “When I spoke to Justin, it was clear that he was hugely passionate about the business and it was a simple choice for me to come on board. I’m quite a traditionalist when it comes to cutting hair and, unlike some other hairdressers, I specialise in scissor cuts rather than rushing to get people in and out of the seat as quickly as possible. or those of you who thought indulging in a Chicken Jalfrezi was more decadent than healthy, think again. Research has shown that curries can slow Alzheimer's and protect against cancer. With heaps of spices like ginger, turmeric, chilli and garlic, the nation's favourite dish can provide not only a tasty dish but a number of hidden health benefits as well.
Turmeric
The yellow spice that gives curry its colour, turmeric has long been used as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent, thanks to a chemical present in the spice called curcumin. Curcumin's medicinal properties are now also thought to be able to protect liver and kidney function, ward off Alzheimer's disease and even kill cancer cells.
Chillies
Raise the heart rate, increase perspiration and release endorphins due to capsaicin, a substance which gives chillies their 'heat'. 38
Ginger
Traditionally used to help digestion and reduce inflammation, as the root helps neutralise stomach acid. Effective at reducing nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, it may also reduce cholesterol if eaten in high doses and could reduce blood clotting and even protect against bowel cancer. The main active component in ginger which gives it its distinct flavour, gingerol, has been shown in research to slow the growth of human tumours in mice. Scientists are now hoping to repeat that research in human trials.
Garlic
Perhaps the best known ingredient in curry, garlic contains a chemical called allicin, which works to dilate the blood vessels and lessen the chance of blood clots, thereby reducing the risk of thrombosis. Both cooked and raw garlic have been found to have medicinal properties. However, to have a fully positive effect on one's health, around two to three cloves of garlic should be consumed daily to release the necessary levels of allicin in the body! So they might be healthier for you than you thought, but curries vary a lot in their ingredients and recipes, so watch what they contain. Curries based on tomatoes like a Rogan Josh are much healthier than coconut milk or cream-based curries like Korma because coconut milk and cream are higher in saturated fat. Be sure to go for lean meat over fatty cuts and plain rice over fried rice. So visit your local curry houses during National Curry Week!

Toffee Apple
T
ry this twist on the classic recipe that pays tribute to the American banoffee pie.
Serves 4-6 Preparation time: 30 mins Cooking time: 45 mins
Ingredients 50g – Butter, melted 8 – 25g Filo pastry sheets (approx. 24 cm x 25 cm) 1 – 397g tin dulce de leche 2 – Pink Lady® apples, cored and finely sliced 2 – Tablespoon caster sugar 20g – Flaked almonds Method: Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan oven/gas mark 6 and put a baking tray in the oven to preheat. Brush the inside of a loose bottom 20cm cake tin with a little melted butter. Put one sheet of filo pastry onto a clean work surface and brush all over with butter. Lay another 40
sheet of filo pastry on top, slightly offsetting the corners. Repeat with butter and remaining filo pastry sheets. Take the filo pastry stack and use to line the cake tin, allowing the edges of the pastry to hand over the edge. Spread the dulce de leche all over the base of the pastry. Arrange the apple slices all over the top of the dulce de leche in circles, slightly overlapping the slices. Scrunch the over-hanging pastry over the top of the apples. Brush all over with a little butter, sprinkle with the sugar and almonds and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and pastry is cooked. Leave to cool for 10 minutes before serving.

his month we visited Meatcure, the latest addition to Bedford’s array of restaurants.
As the name would suggest, it’s all about the meat here and this bar and burger joint has got off to a great start. The thing that struck us first was the great service – always a very important factor and the first impression, staff here are very friendly and welcoming. So down to business. We chose a Smokey & the Bandit Burger – beef patty, melted cheese, smoked streaky bacon, caramalised onions, tomato, house mayo, mother sauce on brioche bun – and the Raging Bull – all the same but swap out the bacon for the chorizo! Both were delicious and of course came with the obligatory fries that were very good – hot and fresh. The burgers were certainly big enough, juicy enough and tasty enough! Accompanied by a refreshing ginger beer, we enjoyed the vibe of the relaxed atmosphere and the great sounds of vibrant music.

orldwide smash hit musical Footloose: The Musical has burst back onto the stage in 2016, playing at Milton Keynes Theatre 17 – 22 Oct as part of a major new UK Tour.
Based on the 1984 screen sensation starring Kevin Bacon, Footloose: The Musical tells the story of city boy Ren, who has to move to a rural backwater in America where dancing is banned. All hell breaks out as Ren breaks loose and soon has the whole town up on its feet. Featuring classic 80s hits including Holding Out for a Hero, Almost Paradise, Let's Hear it for the Boy and the unforgettable title track, Footloose: The Musical is set to take the world by storm once again in this brand new production, bursting with youthful spirit, dazzling dance and electrifying music. When the film was released in 1984, it became the highest-grossing February release in US film history. Footloose was nominated for a Golden Globe, and both the title song and Let’s Hear It for the Boy received Academy Award nominations
The cast includes Gareth Gates as Willard and Maureen Nolan as Vi Moore. Gareth Gates rose to fame through the inaugural series of Pop Idol in 2001, going on to sell over 5 million records worldwide and have hits across the globe and has enjoyed a successful career on stage, with credits including Les Misérables, Legally Blonde and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Maureen Nolan has been singing with her sisters since she was nine years old, when they became one of Europe’s first girl bands, The Nolans who enjoyed phenomenal record sales worldwide, and worked with some of the world’s most respected artists including Frank Sinatra. On stage, Maureen has played Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers in the West End and on tour to critical acclaim. Luke Baker will play Ren McCormack, the role immortalised on screen by Kevin Bacon. Film
Review Don’t Breathe
Don’t Breathe looks like it is one of those new-fangled horror movies that doesn’t look to scare you as such but just tries its very hardest to make you jump… a lot. I can’t say I am a fan of that kind of film, it is horror in name only really. Luckily Don’t Breathe is not what it appears to be, instead it is a taut, fast paced thriller that really gets your adrenaline pumping and has you on the edge of your seat from very early on.
Speakers #
The plot is quite basic, a trio of young 20 ish friends want to escape their dreary town and burglary is the means to do it. This night they are breaking into the home of a blind man rumoured to have a lot of money in his house. The problem is he is also an army veteran and knows how to defend himself. The title is the perfect name for this film as it not only describes how quiet the trio will have to be but also explains how you will find yourself while watching. You will find yourself holding your breath in excitement and with the tension that the terrific direction will build as the story unfolds.

The
khill Book Bug Bricreviews… The Lauras by Sara Taylor Alex’s mum has walked out and taken Alex with her. Suddenly Alex has become aware that mums are people too. Alex’s mother has decided that she’s left it long enough to tie up the loose ends in her life and Alex is along for the trip, a very long road trip across America as it happens. As they travel, mother and child discover more about each other and we discover more about our narrator, the enigmatic Alex, a teenager lurching into puberty with all its attendant traumas and crises. The one thing we don’t discover is Alex’s gender. Is Alex a boy or a girl? Alex has decided to be gender neutral and works hard to make sure no one can tell. Sara Taylor skilfully manages the language within the novel to ensure the reader can’t tell either and I can tell you from trying to write this review that not using personal pronouns is no easy task! However, the book is about so much more than just growing up non-binary and, as Alex’s mum settles old scores and rediscovers the women who have shaped her past, so Alex finally manages to discover a possible way of being.

Downsizing a Home: Tips for Caregivers
elcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Moona Karim of Home Instead Senior Care in Bedford. Organising a move for an elderly relative is a stressful event. The packing, discarding, cleaning, paperwork and countless other tasks is a major challenge and can feel overwhelming. Plan Ahead: Declutter before a move is on the horizon. Shred, toss or donate obvious items such as clothes, books and household items that take up space. Make Lists: Keep a notebook for the move and whenever you think of something related to the
move—write it down. Include to-do lists, calendar/ timelines and questions about the new residence. Complete Paperwork: Inform the address change at the post office, bank and other accounts, driving license/car insurance, subscriptions and clubs. Sort: Start with the easiest room. Don't pack, just sort into categories and use a colour coded method to keep track: 1) To keep 2) Possibly save 3) Donate or sell 4) Discard Pack: Label all boxes with the destination area and it will be easier to pack.(ie: bathroom, kitchen, bedroom). Pack valuables separately and keep these with you during the move. Home Instead Senior Care, 106A Bedford road, Wootton, Bedford, MK43 9JB. Tel 01234 868820.
CAREGivers Required Do you have a caring & compassionate nature? Then you should talk to us. We are looking for Caregivers to assist the elderly with non-medical services including companionship, home help and personal care in their own home. No experience is required as we provide full training.

PETS
Frightening
Fireworks! T
owards the end of October many pets are disturbed by fireworks. Some pets simply find the noises mildly surprising, but others suffer significant distress and develop severe noise phobias that interfere with normal life. The stress involved may even result in physical illness; and some pets may attempt to run away from the noises, becoming lost or injured.
How can we help?
Keep pets indoors after dusk (move hutches into a shed or garage, walk dogs before dusk, and lock the cat flap!) • Close windows/ doors and draw the curtains. • Provide background noise that your pet is used to (radio, TV, washing machine). • Provide a “den” for your pet to escape to. For dogs this may be an open crate covered with a blanket; for cats it should be an elevated hiding place such as an igloo-style bed on top of a wardrobe. Prepare the den well in advance of the firework season and

occasionally drop treats into it so that your pet associates the place with good things. • If your pet is hiding, leave them alone. If your dog copes by pacing and panting, let them do this. However, if your pet is keen to take treats or play a game with you, this is an excellent way of distracting them and rewarding calm behaviour. • If you know that your pet is likely to find firework season distressing contact the surgery in advance to discuss anti-anxiety medication options. • Sound CDs are available to introduce your pet to a variety of noises. These can be useful for young dogs and cats to prevent a noise phobia from developing. If your pet already has a fear of noises these CDs may worsen the situation, and should not be used without prior advice from a veterinary surgeon or behaviourist. Please contact the surgery or visit the Acorn House Behaviour Service section of our website at www. acornhousevets.com for further information. We will be holding a "firework phobia" talk at the practice on the 15th of October at 8pm. Booking essential. Please call reception.
At Acorn House we stock a wide range of effective preventative and environmental flea control products. Our team will help you choose the most suitable products for your pet.

Your Tarotscopes for October 2016... by Susan Peppiatt Libra
A good month full of gentle happiness. October shows as being a time when money is a little easier all around and more can be spent on fun and family, rather than necessities. Plans for something big and worthwhile show as stirring even the most rational person into action suddenly towards the end of the month
Scorpio
The importance of a female friend is shown this month for Scorpios; her connection shows as caring and fulfilling. For those born this month, Scorpios are advised to be especially aware of family and those who are usually independent minded, but are more in need this month, than normal.
Sagittarius
Feelings are a little depressing this month and there shows a strong sense of missing someone who would usually be close, but the cards suggest that this time should be used to bring out the health and fitness schemes and get on top of feelings by being the best that they can be physically.
Capricorn
Some difficult changes are expected for Geminis but the results show as worthwhile, although demanding. The month starts in a little uncertainty, pulls through the difficulties early on and shows as worthwhile at the month's end. Tiredness seems the most prevalent feeling then, next to success. 66
Aquarius
Decisions which are binding and fairly difficult to make are shown. While the subject of the decision is fairly lighthearted, the deliberations seem to take far longer than necessary, mainly due to constant complete changes of direction. Tossing a coin for a final answer seems the quickest way forward here.
Pisces
Money and travel are highlighted, with savings being a high priority for some special event which shows as suddenly coming to prominence. The other cards show a fair amount of uncertainty and misunderstandings so the advice is to make doubly certain of the facts before money is spent.
Aries
Tests, examinations and being judged by others are the main value of the cards drawn for Aries. There is a significant feeling of success but also a feeling of having too many things to do at once to be comfortable with. Advice is to take rest and relaxation seriously too, to get the best results.
Taurus
Being held in the spotlight and having to dig deeply into mental strengths show as important this month. It’s no easy task to hit the heights that others have come to expect, and it could be easy to be swayed from the main goal by selfdoubt or self-destructive criticism. This really needs pushing away!
Gemini
Seeing both sides of an argument or discussion is par for the course for most Geminis, but this month shows as slightly crazy when it comes to taking sides or making decisions. There is so much which seems to be one way, then the opposite. The whole picture takes a while to come to light, so to hold off until it is clear.
Cancer
A sense of relaxation and letting go of past difficulties shows for this sign. It’s time to take stock of the good things which are still around and make the most of enjoying them before pushing for better or bigger things. A sense of just allowing themselves to ‘just be’ shows for the whole month, and more.
Leo
Waiting for the perfect time to do something is part of the Leo make up, but there is no more perfect time than now to take on tasks. These particularly include health and fitness issues, which show as having fallen down in the past. Time to get back on track.
Virgo
An excellent outcome after a time of pressure is the main meaning this month. While most pressure would seem to come from within, it is fairly daunting because of past experiences. Advice is to put past thoughts away and strike out as if on a completely new venture for the best success.

GARDENING
A Time
to Plant W
inter is a good time to think about planting new trees in your garden. This can be to replace a tree lost or just to enhance your garden. A new tree can be a great asset to your property as long as the right selection is made and the correct care is taken of the tree during it s early years. Many trees have differing attributes to take into account,
Flowering:
Prunus Shirofugen – Flowering Cherry Makes a small tree with a rounded crown which is rather spreading, mature height 5-10 metres. Foliage is copper coloured when young which contrasts well with its large, double white flowers which finish pink.
Bark Interest:
Betula utilis Jacquemontii – Himalayan Birch Makes a medium sized tree with a mature height of 15-20metres. Bears oval, dark green leaves which turn golden yellow in autumn. Its white bark is accentuated by lenticels lines and peels routinely each year.
Autumn colour:
Fraxinus angustifolia Raywood – Raywood Ash Medium sized tree with a dense, upright, oval and relatively compact habit. Mature height 10-15 metres. Its dark green leaves turn a wine red in autumn.
Berries:
Sorbus aucuparia Joseph Rock-Mountain Ash Small tree with ascending branches, mature height 5-10metres.Bunches of small white flowers appear in spring and in autumn creamy yellow berries appear when the leaves turn a lovely red. Watering – Water regularly if the weather is dry, normally from April onwards throughout the growing season. A standard 12-14foot high tree needs at least 20litres of water on a weekly basis to encourage good establishment. Mulching – Helps enormously, increases the availability of water & nutrients, and prevents the development of weed growth. Staking – Once established the trees stem will increase in girth, therefore an annual check must be made & the stake/strap adjusted as required. Feeding – Regular feeding with a balanced slow release, water soluble fertiliser to improve root and shoot growth. Improving the trees health and therefore improving resistance from pest and disease issues.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

Good enough to eat!
A
pumpkin is not just for Halloween – they are great fun to grow with children and make great soups and pies. They are easy to cultivate, but need a sunny position, plenty of water and shelter from cold winds. One of the finest sights of autumn is colourful pumpkins ripening in the sun – they are an essential part of Halloween and also attractive in the garden. Once harvested, pumpkins can be used for delicious soup and for roasting.
These huge orange veg need a long, hot growing season to fully ripen, and are best planted in fertile, moist soil in the sun. Sow seeds indoors in April and plant out when all risk of frost has passed, protecting the young plants with cloches if the weather turns really cold. Give the plants some liquid fertiliser every two weeks and water during particularly
74
hot or dry spells. They make a good strong root system so, once established, they are not as thirsty as courgettes. When growing large cultivars, remove the growing tip when three fruits have set, giving them a better chance of ripening. If you only want one giant pumpkin, just leave one fruit on each plant. Put a layer of straw or a board under the fruits to keep them clean, and let them ripen on the ground until they sound hollow when tapped. Good varieties include 'Triple Treat', which is round and orange with tasty flesh, and 'Becky', a medium-sized variety ideal for carving.

Stalking and harassment affects millions of people in the UK and can have a devastating impact on victims, in some cases forcing them to change their daily routines and behaviours. Taken in isolation some of the behaviours may seem normal and of no concern, however the repeated and persistent nature can see them take on a more sinister meaning. Stalking is a crime and anyone who harasses and intimidates someone through real-life or virtual means risks getting a criminal record and even a prison sentence. 80
A stalker does not have to be a stranger, the majority of stalkers are known to their victims. Almost 50% of stalkers are either ex-partners or a family member; they could also be a friend, neighbour, colleague or acquaintance. But it is important to remember just because you know the stalker doesn’t mean this is your fault or their behaviour is acceptable. Police are raising awareness that you don’t have to accept it, it is a crime and you will be believed. Stalking can be defined as the unwanted and obsessive attention by a person or a group. Examples of stalking are; • Unwanted contact – in person, by phone or online • Publishing statements or material about the victim • Monitoring the victim • Loitering in a public or private place frequented by the victim • Interfering with property or damaging property belonging to the victim • Watching or following the victim • Sending unwanted presents, for example flowers Stalking behaviours can range from attention from somebody seeking a romantic relationship, to violent predatory behaviour. If you feel you are being persistently harassed by another person who is causing you distress and fear, then it is important you seek help.
If you are in immediate danger always call 999. For more advice and support call the police on 101, or visit www.bedforshire.police.uk You can also get advice from the National Stalking Helpline: 0808 802 0300 And, Paladin National Stalking Advocacy Service online at www.paladinservice.co.uk or call the helpline on 020 3866 4107

s e m i T h g u o T Tough Choices Changes to your household waste collections
T
his week Bedford Borough Council’s Executive voted to accept changes to the frequency of black bin collections.
The changes come following a seven week consultation in which a leaflet was sent to all households; the Council received 1,928 responses from residents. Subject to a seven day call in period, the decision means that commencing on Monday 31 October 2016 the collection system will operate on an alternate weekly basis – one week black bin collection and the following week orange and green lidded bin collections. In addition, changes to the garden waste collection service will be commencing in December 2016. These changes mean there will be no garden waste collections from beginning of December to the end February each year; and as well as this, the option to use green sacks will be removed. However, residents currently using green sacks will be able to request a green bin for the disposal of their garden waste. The changes come as Bedford Borough Council faces further government funding cuts which mean savings of over £23 million will need to be made from its annual budget by 2019. In addition, the £3 million government funding for 82
weekly waste collections is expiring this year and not being replaced. The changes to bin collections will save over £500,000 a year through a reduction in temporary staff required to support the service, as well as a reduction in the number of vehicles involved and savings in fuel and maintenance costs. In addition the changes will bring environmental benefits, including encouraging residents to recycle more and reducing the amount of black bin waste sent to landfill as well as a reduction in traffic and emissions. In light of these upcoming changes, and concerns from residents regarding a lack of bin capacity, the Council is keen to remind residents of the ways in which they can recycle and reduce waste, thereby saving space in their black bin. Visit the Council’s Rubbish and Recycling page for details of what can be recycled in your orange bins; locations and opening times of recycling centres; and waste reduction tips.

BEDFORD Gates open at midday and there will be 2-for-1 entry for all ladies on the day as well as complimentary rosé wine and canapés on arrival to the marquee before the game kicks off at 3pm – while stocks last that is! The event will see a host of other treats available in the marquee throughout the day including beauty treatments – courtesy of 5th Avenue Hair and Beauty Spa, live music, cupcakes, and much, much more. There will also be many opportunities to get your hands on some exclusive prizes through the Cancer Research UK raffle, auction and there will also be a best-dressed competition following the match.
I
t will be a busy October at Goldington Road with Bedford Blues hosting three game including the annual Ladies Day fixture which will take place on Saturday 15th when a Dragons Premier Select team visit in the British and Irish Cup.
It was 2007 when the Blues first turned pink to raise funds for breast cancer charities and this year the club will once again be donating to the cause as they invite Bedford’s female fans through the turnstiles to help show their support for Cancer Research UK. 84
For those who might fancy something a bit more substantial in the food department – Nos’s Nosh will be open as usual and the man himself may even have a special offer on the cards. Just pop along to the catering outlet in the Scrum Bar to see what Nos has to offer but remember that service stops before the game kicks off. Bedford Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: "Ladies Day is always great fun and has become a firm favourite with the fans and it's also a fantastic
B
BLUES opportunity for us to have a bit of fun with our supporters. "So many of our fans will know or have known someone who has been affected by Cancer and it is important that we show our backing to the fantastic work that is carried out by these charities and Bedford Blues are proud to support such a wonderful cause.
Tickets for all Bedford Blues matches are available to purchase online at a discounted price but the 2-for-1 offer only applies to tickets bought on the day. Don’t miss out on a great event in aid of a very worthy charity and get yourself down to Goldington Road this weekend to cheer on the Blues. October will also see the second Bedford Blues Community Rugby Camp taking place at Goldington Road. Following the huge success of the inaugural camp back in August, another programme will be taking place during the October halfterm week. The rugby camp will be open to players of all ages and abilities with boys and girls being welcomed to the sessions which take place
at Goldington Road. Youngsters will be able to train as professional rugby players while also being put through their paces with a variety of drills including core skills, evasion tactics and fun-packed games all under the close tutelage of experienced players and coaches.

Eagles The
T
he Eagles 2016/17 season continues to have its ups and its downs. Since the last Beds Life publication, there was a positive result at Beaconsfield Sycob, where Lee Roache, Sam Baffour and Hamad Lewal make positive starts to their Eagles careers with a performance that was to be remembered. The 5-1 victory that day proved to be the jewel of the season so far, and 48 hours later the Eagles were unlucky to come away with just a 1-1 draw when hosting Arlesey Town on bank holiday Monday. September started with narrow defeats at Royston Town (1:0) and Aylesbury United (2:1), and at the time of writing, preparations are well underway for the remaining games in September. Jon Taylor, Darren Croft and the management team continue to assemble a squad which is confident, capable and entertaining to watch. However, consistency and team spirit is needed
to enhance the side’s chances of competing at the top of the division. This is something that Taylor himself agrees with and has alluded to in interviews with other members of the local press. Off the field, the Supporters Club are running their next two quiz nights. These take place on Friday 7th October and Friday 25th November. Both evenings start at 7:30pm, entrance is £6 a head which includes a ploughman’s supper, with a maximum team size of six. For further information, please contact Gerry on 01234 381213. Are you looking for somewhere to hold your event? The Wallace suite at the Eyrie could be your ideal venue. Whether it be party, wedding reception, fundraising event or anything, we have the deal for you. Please contact Angie or Ash Scutchings on 07767 488797 for further information.
