BEDFORD BOROUGH PARKS RECEIVE INTERNATIONAL ACCOLADES Two parks in Bedford Borough have been awarded an international accolade by TripAdvisor. Priory Country Park and Bedford Park have both received recognition in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award. The award recognises attractions
held in high regard by travellers internationally. Receiving this accolade highlights both parks as great places for residents and visitors to enjoy when spending time in Bedford Borough. The Travellers’ Choice award accumulates the reviews, ratings and saves of travellers. It aims to identify the top 10% of all listings on TripAdvisor. With over 8.7 million listings on the website, winning this award demonstrates the quality of these two council maintained parks. Priory Country Park has received significant recognition for a number of years. It has been awarded the ‘Certificate of Excellence’ five years in row, qualifying it for the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame. In 2019, it received the Green Flag Award for the 18th year running. Bedford Park has also received the Green Flag Award.
MUCH-NEEDED REPAIRS TAKING PLACE TO THE B530 Works to rebuild part of the B530 near Kempston Hardwick started last month. The works include replacement of sections of the road drainage system, together with resurfacing of the road. Back in the summer of 2018, cracks appeared in the road on the B530 between the Interchange Retail Park and Kempston Hardwick, and the road began to sink. A temporary speed limit was put in place as the road had become too dangerous for normal use and short-term works were carried out to ensure the road could continue to be safely used. 4
Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts
Now the most badly affected stretch of road near Kempston Hardwick is being completely dug out and rebuilt, and then the whole stretch of road between (just south of) the A421 bridge and Kempston Hardwick will be resurfaced. In addition, the drainage system along the entire length of the road from the Interchange Retail Park and Kempston Hardwick will be cleaned, and much of it replaced to make the system more resilient for the future. These works are expected to be complete by early December.
MP COLUMN
VIEWS FROM RICHARD FULLER,
MP FOR NORTH EAST BEDFORDSHIRE
With all the uncertainty the Coronavirus pandemic has brought, the importance of maintaining our mental wellbeing has gained more attention. This year, World Mental Health Day is on 10th October and provides an opportunity for all of us to raise awareness of mental health.
Each year, around 1 in 4 people experience mental health problems of some type, thankfully usually mild and passing. However, I am sure most of us have a family member, a colleague or a friend who has struggled with their mental health. We try our best to help but sometimes lack the tools and understanding to provide the help needed most. Sometimes the hardest part is starting the conversation that enables that help to be accessed. I was very pleased to be invited to join a session of For Men to Talk last month. This group formed earlier in the year with physical meetings in Potton and has moved to online zoom meetings since lockdown. The group is doing crucial work in supporting men suffering with anxiety, depression and grief and helping them to talk with others in the same situation. The conversation is light, talks a lot about football, but also provides an open and honest forum for each of us to share. For more information please visit fb.com/ForMenToTalk

The government has created a five-year funding plan that will see the annual NHS budget grow by over £33 billion, with mental health services receiving a large boost of £2.3 billion, the fastest uplift in funding. This funding will enable the expansion of services and provide faster access to community and crisis mental health services. The additional funding will also deliver more mental health ambulances, “safe havens” in the community; and a 24-hour mental health crisis hotline when people are in urgent need of help. I am also encouraged by government plans for a new mental health crisis service that will be available in every major A&E, alongside new children and young peoples’ crisis teams across the country. While the additional funding is welcome, there are some things we can all do to help ourselves and those around us. The NHS site nhs.uk/oneyou/ every-mind-matters/ has some general advice surrounding mental health and tips for looking out for friends and family. I also have a short guide on my website with information to make sure that you look after your mental health at this time. Please visit richardfuller. co.uk/mental-health-guide to download a copy.

Search for this month’s featured roles by adding the name of the organisation into the keyword field on our on-line role search facility at cvsbeds.org.uk/volunteer Barnardo’s – Occasional driver Barnardos will soon be starting a service that will need someone who could be called upon to provide lifts in their own fully insured vehicle to enable children to attend meetings. The current schedule shows a need once a month on a Saturday afternoon, but this might change.

OBESITY AND COVID-19
WHAT IS THE LINK?
COVID-19 and its effects have scared us all, health professionals and public alike. We’re still learning about the virus, but one fact has been all over the news in the past couple of months. Obese people (people with a BMI over 30) are more at risk of complications. Why is this? Most of my friends with BMIs close to or greater than 30 seem perfectly healthy individuals. Should they be worried? In order to answer this question, we need to look at the immune system: When we catch a virus our body’s defence system is triggered, and inflammation occurs. This is due to our all-purpose innate immune response, which serves as the first wave against foreign invaders. Blood flow increases to the infected area causing redness and swelling. When your nose blocks and becomes red when you catch a cold, that’s inflammation. This reaction is caused by white blood cells called macrophages and the proteins they produce called cytokines. It’s the cytokines which trigger inflammation. Usually this inflammation is a simply a sign that our body is releasing the hormones and proteins which activate our white blood cells to kickstart the recovery process, and ultimately defeat the infection. No inflammation means no defence…and that’s bad. So far so good; so why is obesity a problem? Well it turns out that white blood cells aren’t the only type of cell that have the ability to produce those inflammation-inducing cytokines. Fat cells (adipocytes) can also do this. Scientists have learned that fat is an active endocrine organ, one that can secrete a whole host of proteins and chemicals, including inflammatory cytokines. 10 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts
When your body keeps adding adipose tissue (fat) cytokines are released by your fat cells, triggering inflammation. Researchers even characterised obesity as ‘…a state of low-grade, chronic inflammation.’ This means that an obese body has its immune system permanently switched on and is therefore in a constant state of inflammation. Over time this can lead to the development of both minor and major illness and conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. How does this relate to COVID-19? Back in 2009 the H1N1 Swine Flu was at its most virulent, doctors in Spain noticed that overweight and obese patients were being admitted to intensive care units in disproportionate numbers and took longer to recover than non-obese or overweight individuals. Their increased risk was attributed to the excess number of pro-inflammatory cytokines in their bodies. Researchers in Canada then analysed the flu records for the previous 12 years and found that people who were obese were statistically more likely to be admitted to hospital for respiratory diseases than those whose BMI was in the normal range. They concluded that obese people were an “at risk” population during flu seasons due to their compromised immune response. As we go into the winter and the risk of a second wave of coronavirus, if you have a BMI over 30 it makes sense to try to bring it down and minimise your risk. Talk to your GP. By Louise Addison

5. Go for a rainy walk; some rainy days you just need to get your wellies on and find some muddy puddles to splash about in. 6. Indoor treasure hunt; make a list of items that can be found around the home for your little one to tick off. Or you could be really creative and make your clues rhyme. 7. Bath time; fill up the bath tub with lots of bubbles and let them have some indoor water play. 8. Bake; get your mixing bowl out and make some cookies together. 9. Rock painting; paint rocks you have collected and hide them for other children to find.
LET IT RAIN: TEN FUN INDOOR ACTIVITIES TODDLERS WILL LOVE ON A RAINY DAY It’s that time of year and sometimes the rain can keep us indoors. If you have toddlers like I do, you probably know they get cabin fever pretty quickly. So here’s my go to list of things to do when the rain keeps us indoors. 1. Egg cracking; save up some of your egg shells and write numbers, letters or colours on the back of the halves. Make up some cards that match the eggs shells. Let your children smash them with a wooden spoon as they match them successfully.
2. Nature painting; use flowers, leaves, conkers, anything that you have collected from your garden or a walk to see what patterns you can make together using paint. 3. Photo puzzles; stick some old photos onto cardboard and cut them up. Have fun putting the pieces back together again. 4. Teddy bears picnic; put a picnic blanket down indoors and set up some of your little ones favourite teddy bears ready for a real or pretend indoor picnic.

BEDFORDSHIRE FAMILIES URGED TO TALK ABOUT ORGAN DONATION
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are urging people to talk to their families about organ donation to increase the number of people whose lives can be saved or transformed by an organ transplant. From 20th May this year, the law around organ donation changed in England. All adults are now considered as having agreed to donate their own organs when they die, unless they record a decision not to donate, are in one of the excluded groups or have told their family that they don’t want to donate. Doctors and specialist nurses at Bedfordshire Hospitals, are urging families across the district to talk about their organ donation decision and make sure their loved ones are aware as families will continue to be approached before organ donation goes ahead.
14 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts
Maciej Ryszka, Clinical Lead for Organ Donation at Bedfordshire Hospitals said: “Knowing what your relative wanted, helps families support their decision around organ donation at what is often a difficult time. We need more people in Bedfordshire to talk about organ donation to increase the number of lifesaving transplants.” These conversations are especially important for residents from BAME backgrounds. People from these communities are more likely to need a transplant, however, often wait longer as the best match will often come from someone of the same ethnicity. Find out more and register your decision by visiting NHS Organ Donor Register at www. organdonation.nhs.uk and most importantly, share your decision with your family.

BOOK REVIEW
S A LVA G E T H E B O N E S
by Jesmyn Ward
It was a storm that made headlines around the world. In August 2005 Katrina hit the Louisiana coast causing great loss of life and destruction to New Orleans and the surrounding area. This award-winning novel, set over a period of 12 days, tells the story of the Batiste family who live in the fictional town of Bois Sauvage. Esch is 15 years old and lives with her three brothers and their father. Isolated from the rest of the small town due to the location of their house, they live in extreme poverty, with a largely absent father who, seven years after the death of his wife, still relies on drink to get through the day. So, with the news of a category 5 storm is about to hit they begin to prepare what they can and stockpile a small amount of food. Each chapter is one day in the build up to the storm. Randall, the eldest is trying to do what he can to hold his family together. Skeetah is preoccupied with his pit-bull fighting dog, China, who has just given birth to puppies. Junior, the youngest, is trying to hold his own against his older brothers. And Esch has just discovered that she is pregnant. A captivating story with engaging characters, immerses you in their world, illustrated by a touch of Greek mythology thanks to a book that Esch (the narrator) is reading for school. The penultimate chapter will have your heart racing but ultimately this is the story of family love that survives despite the poverty and deprivation.

INGREDIENTS:
CHILLI HEATWAVE FRIED CHICKEN This is the Best Fried Chicken....EVER!!! Who doesn’t like fried chicken, but it’s one of those dishes that people always think of as a takeaway. Think again!! Once you’ve made it, you will be adding it to your repertoire and making it over and over again. With regards to the corn chips flavour listed in the ingredients section, it doesn’t have to be that flavour or brand. There are so many different flavours & brands out there. Go for your favourite. It’s all about making it your own and to suit your taste pallet This will become a staple when you want to treat yourself to something a little bit naughty....but oh so worth it. Just make it and ENJOY IT!!!! Serves 3-4 hungry people

1kg skinless and boneless chicken thighs a good grinding of salt and pepper Juice of ½ a lemon 3-5 tablespoons plain natural yogurt 2 x 180g bags of Doritos Chilli Heatwave flavour corn chips or any of your choice vegetable/sunflower oil to fill a third of a small/medium sized saucepan
Cut the chicken thighs in half and put them in a large bowl. To the bowl, add the juice of ½ a lemon, the plain yogurt (start with 3 tablespoons) and a good grinding of salt & pepper. With your hands, give the chicken a good mix until the yogurt has fully coated the chicken. Add more yogurt if needed. Put the chicken to one side. To make the corn chip mix, begin by using 1 ½ bags of corn chips, put them in a food processor and blitz until you have the consistency of breadcrumbs. If you don’t have a food processor, just open the bag to release the air and hold the open top tightly and use your other hand to scrunch the bag until you have the correct breadcrumb consistency. Put the corn chip mix on a plate.
Take a piece of marinated chicken and coat it with the corn chip mix. Push on the chicken to make sure it is all covered and then place on a wire rack. Continue with the rest of the chicken. If you need more corn chip mix, blitz a bit more using the methods above. Now fill a small/medium saucepan with a third of oil and let it heat up. Put a corn chip crumb in the oil and when it starts to sizzle gently, you’ve got the temperature right. I normally cook about 4 pieces of chicken at a time. It will take approximately 2-3 minutes to cook through. Once cooked, remove from the saucepan and place on a plate with kitchen towel. Keep going until all the chicken is done. This recipe goes amazingly well with my side dishes, Cajun Oven Chips, Teriyaki Dip and Gherkin Green Salad (see picture). You can watch me making the Chilli Heatwave Fried Chicken and all the sides by visiting my YouTube Channel ‘The Composing Cook’. HAPPY COOKING!!!
My name is Michael Antoniou, but you can call me ‘The Composing Cook’. What an interesting name you may ask? Let me explain, but allow me to clear my throat first. I have always had a real passion for home cooking, and having been a keen singer/songwriter from an early age, I came to the realisation that both are a form of composition. With music, you put the right instruments, vocals and melodies together; you end up with a great song. With cooking, you put the right ingredients together; you have created an amazing dish. I want to show you recipes that can be cooked any day of the week, using ingredients that can be found at your local supermarket. I want you to take my recipes and make them your own. We all have different tastes so flexibility with ingredients is key. Cooking and being creative in the kitchen is great for mindfulness. It gives me amazing results quickly so not only does it cheer me up, it fills me up. I also have my own YouTube Channel where you can watch me making all the recipes that are featured here. All you have to do is go to: www.youtube.com and in the search engine type: The Composing Cook and voila, you have found me. Join me on this culinary journey and let’s have some fun together. HAPPY COOKING!!!

ARE TENNIS BALLS
BAD FOR DOGS? Many dogs love to carry or chase a ball, but there are some potential problems to be aware of.
DENTAL HEALTH
When tennis balls are used in gritty or sandy environments, the grit particles become trapped in the outer layer of the ball and cause it to become very abrasive to the teeth. Smooth rubber balls are a safer alternative.
CHOKING AND OBSTRUCTION
Balls must not be small enough to accidentally go down the windpipe or to be swallowed. Of course, a large ball can still become hazardous if the dog chews it into smaller pieces. Purchase toys and balls specially designed for persistent chewers and supervise play carefully to avoid this problem.
JOINT PROBLEMS
Dogs with joint conditions such as hip or elbow dysplasia and arthritis are likely to suffer exacerbation of joint pain after high impact exercise. Running fast and suddenly skidding to
a halt, rapid changes of direction, and leaping up into the air to catch a bouncing tennis ball are all types of high impact exercise that can make these problems worse. Consider teaching your dog to wait for a ball to be thrown, and then go to retrieve it once it is still – this should reduce the high impact nature of the exercise (and teach some selfcontrol at the same time!)
MENTAL HEALTH
Some dogs are obsessed with chasing a ball and their daily walk will consist entirely of chasing and fetching. This type of walk does not allow a dog to sniff and search and engage with their environment. Instead, it can lead to very high levels of arousal, making it difficult for the dog to settle or behave calmly when they return home. Consider restricting ball play to short bursts of play, with a clear “finish” cue. Switch to throwing a less exciting toy (that does not roll) and then moving onto playing “tug” games when the dog retrieves it. Scattering treats in the long grass at intervals on walks can encourage dogs to sniff and explore and take their time.

GARDENING
BEAUTIFUL BERBERIS Berberis thunbergii are deciduous shrubs which look particularly fabulous at this time year, producing highly coloured leaves, and often berries which last well into winter. These berries are actually edible and rich in vitamin C, though because they are very acidic, they are not widely consumed by people. They are an important food for many small birds though. They get their other name of ‘barberry bush’ because of their vicious spines. This makes them useful as an impenetrable barrier hedge and may be another reason why the berries aren’t harvested much! Like the colourful Japanese Maple, they originate from Eastern Asia. Berberis vary in colour according to the cultivar and variety. The common Berberis thunbergii have green leaves in spring and summer which turn rich burgundy in autumn. If you’d like the purple colour all year round choose Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea, which has purple leaves in spring that turn rich mahogany in autumn. Though Berberis are generally grown for their autumn colour, they are a hard-working shrub, and produce a mass of tiny yellow flowers in spring, providing interest at either end of the year. 38 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts
There is a Berberis for most gardens: They can grow to a maximum height and spread of 1.5m, but there are now dwarf forms which grow to just 50cm, try ‘Tiny Gold’ or ‘Lutin Rouge’. They grow best in full sun but also tolerate partial shade. They do well in most soil types, and even do well in drought, but will thrive particularly well in well drained moist soil. Their easy-going nature extends to aftercare, as they are generally pestfree and require little attention, other than a trim to tidy them up periodically. If you don’t have much space or mainly grow in containers on a balcony ‘Lutin Rouge’ does very well in a pot. Mid-September to October, and mid-March to April are the best times to plant so now is the perfect time. Dig a hole double the width of the root ball. Sprinkle in a handful of blood, fish and bone and work into the ground. Place the plant into the hole, fill in with soil around the root ball and firm the soil down gently but firmly, finish by watering well. They will appreciate being mulched with well-rotted organic matter in late spring, but they aren’t fussy; grass cuttings will do fine. Rachael Leverton

The Harry Robinson Trophy returned to Bedford as they emerged as 2-1 winners at Kempston Rovers in the last of the preseason fixtures, A penalty from Connor Tomlinson and a goal from Drew Richardson cancelling out Kempston’s opener. Bedford were unable to produce the goal needed in their first competitive match, in the FA Cup, and for the second year running exited in the Preliminary round. The match at Daventry saw the Eagles score four times, only for them to be disallowed. The killer blow came in the 95th minute when the ball appeared to come off Rob Sinclair’s shoulder. The resulting penalty gave the winning goal to the hosts despite the run of play. In October, The Eagles entertain Barton Rovers on the 3rd before travelling to Biggleswade FC. They then host North Leigh on the 10th. The FA Trophy follows at Spalding, before trips to Yaxley and Aylesbury. Then its local derby time once more as Kempston Rovers visit the Eyrie on the 31st.
