Bedfordshire S

Walking Festival 2016

eptember is an exciting time to get out into the countryside and enjoy a good walk. The 8th Bedfordshire Walking Festival starts on Saturday 10th with walks everyday for nine days. Every year new places are visited and the informative walks keep the county’s history alive.

This year, there are Interest and Nature Walks, Short Walks, Health Walks, Walkers Walks, Long Walks and the Greensand Ridge Path 40 mile challenge. For those wanting a explore different ways of walking, try the Nordic Walking Taster sessions and a session with the new craze of Fitness walking in Bedford. Fitness walking is easier on the knees and joints than running or jogging and burns off the same amount of energy. Encouraging adults and children to be able to read and use a map is fun and on Sunday 11th September, the Marston Vale Forest Centre have two half day sessions entitled “Maps Can Be Fun”. The morning session is a family session which starts with an introduction to the basics of how to read a map, followed by an opportunity to put the new found skills into practice with a fun walk around the park. £10 for up to 2 adults and 2 children. The afternoon session is similar but adults only and £5 per person. Booking is essential. There are some excellent walks commencing with a delightful North Beds circular starting from the 4

entrance to Twinwoods arena on Saturday afternoon, followed on Sunday afternoon with a lovely circular from Bromham Mill. A Monday morning walk from Turvey and Wednesday one for adults with young children at Willington, and two walks on Thursday; an exploration of the Grange Estate in the morning and “Some unusual views of Bedford” in the afternoon. Friday morning offers an enjoyable three hour River walk starting in St Pauls Square and on Saturday afternoon enjoy a rural ramble round Riseley. Sunday afternoon the circular ramble from Mowsbury Park includes a visit to the hillfort. On Saturday why not go “Off the rails” by taking the train to Bow Brickhill Station. Tuesday morning a special one off tour of Southill Estate, courtesy of Lady Whitbread, starting from Shuttleworth. Wednesday and Sunday 18th offers guided tours of Ampthill Great Park to celebrate the anniversary of Capability Brown. On Friday morning you can “Follow in the Monks Footsteps” at Warden Abbey Vineyard. The 40 mile Greensand Ridge Path Challenge takes place over the weekend of 17th & 18th September – a delightful walk at anytime but a challenge when done over the two days.

COMMUNITY

day

Bedford together T

his year’s theme is Bedford’s people and places. We are asking Bedford’s citizens to sketch or paint their favourite Bedford scenes, buildings, monuments and people. Their contributions will be exhibited in the library meeting room on Bedford Together day on Saturday 29th October. During Bedford Together day visitors will be encouraged to sketch an outline of one of the scenes, or personalise a ready prepared scene by colouring it in. Our hope is that the sketches can be combined and eventually published as the Bedford Colouring Book. Get out your easel, dust off that paint set, sharpen those pencils, and help us recreate the scenes of Bedford you know and love. You don’t have to be the next Rembrandt or Picasso, we just want the people of Bedford to paint or sketch their favourite landmarks, people, buildings or scenes of the town. Bedford Together Celebrates the vibrant ethnic mix of the people of Bedford and their eclectic approach to culture and communication

For more information please contact Bedford Central Library 01234 718178 Would you like to get involved with BedTog and our activities, either as an individual or as an organisation? Get in touch, we would love to hear from you. 8

MP COLUMN

Views from

Alastair Burt, your Local MP... This month – Summer

I

hope constituents will be relieved that I don’t think it is yet time to return to politics, or writing about it. What with the Referendum then a new PM, and ructions in other partiesenough. My summer started this year with the annual Duck Race in Arlesey, a wonderful example of typical English summer fun. For just a pound, you buy a plastic duck for charity, then watch as it whizzed down the River Hiz (whizzing being a loose description of the speed) competing with nearly 500 others to reach the finish line first. A well organised day, raising lots of money for charity, providing a truly excellent day out with a lot of fun and enjoyment for a pretty minimal outlay. For many of us, our English summers are highlighted by such events, whether it is a village fete, a country fair, a steam event or a river festival. These are often on our doorsteps, and produced not commercially, but as they always have been, by local groups of friends showing a sense of community which is, in the words of the advert, ‘priceless’. We owe all those who put these events on for us a huge debt of gratitude.

I hope it is not just a sign of growing older to feel that the seasons are running all into one. When I was a boy, Lancashire provided football and Bury FC until early May, then Lancashire County Cricket and local league until late August or early September. The two blurred only slightly, and it was possible to play each sport one after the other with few clashes. It’s got harder now- the demands of modern sport require ever earlier returns to pre-season training, and the old season extends and pre-season interferes for the sake of TV and revenue in a manner unthought of years ago. Not that I ever mind the football season starting. We used to holiday in Scotland with the family partly because the season starts earlier there than England. And I used to sneak in my first game at Ross County or Nairn! But I was a little shocked this year to get in my first game- the popular ‘El Classico’ between Biggleswade Town and Biggleswade United – actually before our summer holiday began! And for sports fans, and not so sports fans, we have also had the backdrop of the Olympics as the summer drew to a close, reminding us of the joys of London 2012, and rekindling a national sense of pride or despair as the results unfolded. A good summer therefore is a combination of local, national and international. How lucky we spectators are, and thanks to all who have made this summer special.

Alastair Burt 10

Money matters By Martin Lewis

SPAM BUSTING S

Tips

pam calls and texts top many people’s list of pet hates. There is no perfect way to stop them, but things are improving with the launch of a new text service for mobiles. So here’s the latest techniques…

How to stop spam calls

Landline: Register your number online with the Telephone Preference Service (www.tpsonline. org.uk) or call 03450700707. It’s then a criminal offence for firms to make unsolicited calls to you. It takes around 28 days to start working. If you get a call after that, tell them you’re on the TPS and most legit companies scarper. Mobile: Only 3% of people have registered their mobiles versus 85% of landlines. Now a new service allows you to register it by free text. Just message to 85095 with ‘TPS’ and your email address (needed to verify your identity).

Stop spam texts

If a legit company texts you – they offer to let you text STOP so you won’t get any further texts. However, if it’s a spam text don’t reply and don’t text STOP as it can just indicate to them that your number is real and it may target you more. Instead, forward the message for free to 7726 (spells spam) to your provider – if enough people do it the number is investigated and blocked. Always block the number on your mobile too. If you still receive calls/texts after you’ve done the above, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) on 0303 1231113. Give it as much info about the call/text as you can. 12

How to stop junk addressed mail

To stop unwanted mail coming through the letterbox, join http://www.mpsonline.org.uk and after about 4 months, the bulk of letters should have stopped. Unlike the others, it’s a voluntary scheme by a trade association, so those still sending aren’t breaking the law. Unaddressed letters, flyers, and other junk: Royal Mail has the online door-to-door opt-out system which means they’ll stop delivering it to you. You’ll need to print an online form and post it back to ‘Freepost Royal Mail Customer Services’ (search for ‘door to door’ on www.royalmail.com) or phone 03457740740. It’ll take about 6 weeks for mail to stop and lasts about two years. You then need to opt out again.

CHARITY

F

ACES (Family and Children’s Early-help Services), are an independent charity, providing practical and emotional help to families living in the Bedford Borough area. They recruit and train volunteers, usually parents themselves, to visit families at home offering informal and confidential support. With an excellent reputation for providing a quality service they have 62 fully trained volunteers, 8 staff members and 5 trustees all of whom are dedicated and committed to ensuring that children in Bedford Borough have the best possible start in life.

Why are FACES needed?

Bringing up children is not always easy and events and circumstances can mean families find themselves in need of support for a variety of reasons such as illness/disability, depression, isolation, domestic abuse, family breakdown, bereavement or being a victim of crime. FACES provide non-judgemental practical and emotional support and help to build a family’s confidence and abilities to cope. FACES supports families so that they can provide a safer, happier and healthier home in which their children can thrive and reach their full potential

16

FACES train volunteers who are themselves parents or have experience in working with children and/or families. They are carefully matched to provide support tailored specifically to a family’s needs. Families are referred to FACES by health, education, children’s centres, voluntary services and around a quarter of families refer themselves.

Volunteers

FACES volunteers come from all walks of life. FACES are always looking for new volunteers. The next volunteer training course starts this September and the course consists of 9 weekly sessions (9.30am to 2.30pm). FACES volunteers are highly trained and dedicated and are well supported in their role. If you think you have what it takes and are able to complete a course and visit a family once a week for 2-3 hours (*conditions apply*), please get in touch.

TALK SAFE

FACES new practitioner, Joanne Rogers, will be delivering training to parents as a weekly course (over four weeks) for parents to understand the concept of Protective Behaviours. The aim of the course is for parents to promote an awareness and ability to keep themselves and their children safe using a variety of tools and strategies.

Don't wait HEALTH

until winter for the flu jab

– plan to see your local GP or Pharmacist

L

ocal GPs are urging people in Bedfordshire to have the flu jab well before winter, and say it is especially important for those at risk of more serious health complications and even death from flu.

The flu vaccine is available from the NHS free of charge to pregnant women, young children, carers, people in long term care facilities, anyone with a long term health condition such as heart disease, breathing problems, diabetes, neurological conditions, cancer, or liver disease and people over 65. It is safe and effective, and can reduce the chances of getting flu and its complications by 70% and of death from flu by 80%. Last winter in Bedfordshire over 1,000 people were admitted to hospital because of flu. Public Health teams are especially concerned that the number of pregnant women who had the flu jab last winter fell by 6.7% compared with the previous year and less than half of two year olds, and adults under 65 who have health conditions had the flu vaccine. This year the free flu vaccination will be available to more children as the age range is being extended to include 7 year olds. The vaccine for all children aged 2-4 and those in school years 1-3 comes as a nasal spray which makes it even more effective. Young children are especially vulnerable to getting flu, and are more likely to spread the virus. Parents are asked to take pre-school children to their GP for the flu vaccine, while the 5-7 year olds will receive it at school. 22

People who are eligible for the free NHS flu jab can get it from their GP or local Pharmacy. Anyone who is not eligible for a free flu jab can still receive the vaccination from their local Pharmacy for a small fee. Frontline health and social care workers should be offered flu vaccination by their employer, to protect patients. Family members of people who are eligible for the free flu jab are also urged to talk to their GP or Pharmacy about getting vaccinated.

Information about flu vaccine is available from http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/ pages/flu-influenza-vaccine.aspx

Are you expecting a baby? Catching flu could lead to complications. All pregnant women are entitled to a free flu jab. Don’t put it off. Ask your GP, pharmacist or midwife about the free flu jab now.

HEALTH

New School Term New Head Lice Infestations

H

ead lice are tiny insects that live in hair and are common among school children 4-11 years old.

Head lice are spread by direct head to head contact. They can’t fly, jump or swim, and are very unlikely to be spread by objects such as

hats, combs and pillows. They don’t have a preference for dirty, clean, short or long hair and only affect people and can’t be caught from animals. Once detached from the hair, head lice will usually die within 12-24 hours.

Detection combing: Wet combing is more accurate. • Wash hair with ordinary shampoo and apply plenty of conditioner. • Use a wide toothed comb to straighten and untangle the hair. • Once untangled, switch to a louse detection comb. • Make sure the teeth of the comb slot into the hair at the roots, with the edge of the teeth lightly touching the scalp. • Draw the comb down from the roots to the ends of

• • • •

the hair with every stroke and check the comb for lice each time. Remove the lice by wiping the comb with tissue paper or rinsing it. Work through the hair section by section, so that the whole head is combed through. Do this at least twice. Repeat procedure on days 5, 9 and 13. Detection combing should be done again on day 17 to check for any live head lice.

Treatment If you find head lice you should check the rest of your family. Treat everyone found to have head lice, on the same day. There are several different products that can be applied to the scalp and hair to kill head lice including: • Dimeticone 4% lotion or lotion spray-applied and left for 8 hours (usually overnight). • Dimeticone 4% spray gel-applied and left for 15 minutes. • Mineral oil and dimeticone spray-applied and

left for 15 minutes. • Isopropyl myristate and cyclomethicone solution-applied and left for 5-10 minutes. • Some treatments need to be done twice-seven days apart-to make sure any newly hatched lice are killed. • Detection combing should usually be done two to three days after finishing treatment, and again 7 days after that

The following treatments are not recommended because they are unlikely to be effective: • Products containing permethrin. • Head lice repellents.

• Electric head lice combs. • Tree and plant treatments such as tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil and lavender oil. • Herbal remedies.

Bedford Hypnotherapist – Greg Coyne

Achieving Weight Loss – Mountain or Molehill?

Im sure most people who have struggled with weight loss reading this will have immediately said “Mountain”. But methods of achieving weight loss over the years have been changing – but you may not have noticed. For most people diets don't work – you lose weight and then you put it on again. The diet didn't work! Does that sound familiar? Enter the Hypno-Band Programme that I have been working with since 2010, with my clients achieving great results. There are psychological and emotional triggers that make you think about eating even when you are not really hungry. The Hypno-Band programme addresses these issues. So if YOU take responsibility for what you eat ( and drink) and your mind is in the “right place” then weight loss needn't be so difficult. My job is to help you get your mind in the right place, give you tools to make that easier by using Hypnosis and Thrive, and then

you complete the circle by putting in some effort. The result is that you can lose weight. This isn't about a quick fix though. This is about you changing your relationship with food. Its about you drawing a line under all of those past “diets” and saying to yourself that you want to get your life and your weight back to what you deserve – a fitter and healthier lifestyle. We want you to eat differently to how you eat now – by taking that responsibility.

If you are interested to find out more about changing your life, losing weight and building your self esteem give me a call on 01234313186, email me at greg.coyne@purehypno. com or visit my bedfordhypnotherapist.co.uk website.

Bedford Hypnotherapist My name is Greg Coyne, I am based in Bromham, and I help my clients using Hypnosis and Thrive. I also offer a FREE Initial Consultation. With offices in Bromham and Milton Keynes resolving your issues has never been easier. Whether you are suffering from anxiety, stress, weight-loss problems, depression, fears, phobias or you have a desire to stop smoking I can help you. I am also the Licensed Hypno-Band Weight Loss Practitioner for Bedford and MK.

Have you tried in the past to Stop Smoking and failed? My amazing technique for Stopping Smoking in just ONE SESSION of just over an hour helps you to stop smoking easily. I use a combination of suggestion therapy, visualisation and positive thinking to make stopping smoking as easy as possible - and it boasts a great success rate.

BE FOUR TIMES MORE LIKELY

to quit this Stoptober S

toptober is back! And the Bedfordshire Stop Smoking Service is inviting smokers to quit with their support for the best shot at kicking the habit this October.

Returning for its fifth year, Stoptober is the mass quit campaign from Public Health England, which has helped thousands of smokers to stop smoking by encouraging them to give up for the month of October – and for the months and years that follow. Evidence shows that residents who use the Bedfordshire Stop Smoking Service are four times more likely to quit smoking, so do get in touch with us this Stoptober for free support. Cllr Louise Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Public Health at Bedford Borough Council, said: “By inviting people to give up smoking in the month of October, we hope they might feel able to extend giving up for even longer periods and, eventually, the smoking habit may totally lack appeal. We will support smokers every step of the way, from referral through to success.” Cllr Maurice Jones, Executive Member for Health at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “The Stoptober

When someone makes it to 28 days smoke free, they are five times more likely to quit for good 30

campaign returns year after year because it works so well – when someone makes it to 28 days smoke free, they are five times more likely to quit for good. This, combined with the free, friendly support of our Stop Smoking Service, gives smokers a great shot at stop smoking success and making a positive change to benefit their health.” For support with your Stoptober challenge, it’s quick and easy to refer yourself, or friends and family, into the Bedfordshire Stop Smoking Service. Simply call 0800 013 0553 to book an appointment to see a specialist advisor at a time and place convenient to you. During your first appointment, you can spend up to 30 minutes with your advisor on a oneto-one basis. They will discuss your smoking habits and routines with you in order to tailor a stop-smoking plan specific to your needs. The advisor will also provide you with the right tools and techniques to help you quit, including nicotine replacement therapy and/or Champix (prescription charges may apply unless exempt). You will be able to have up to 12 weeks of support. Last year, over 215,000 people across England and Wales signed up to take part in Stoptober.

For free, friendly advice on stopping smoking and to order a free ‘Quit Kit’, call 0800 013 0553. Alternatively, visit www.smokefreebedfordshire.co.uk

Sourdough

S

on the rise!

ourdough is in the spotlight this month with a national campaign #SourdoughSeptember dedicated to sharing its secrets and demystify the delicious delights of the oldest way of raising a loaf. Summerhill Farm Shop’s Sandy Boyd tells us about this slow-fermented bread and the artisan nature of making your own sourdough from local ingredients. Traditional sourdough recipes use a sourdough starter (made of flour and water), salt and flour. The yeast is cultured and kept alive in the sourdough starter, which can be passed on from friend to friend or generation to generation! Using a sourdough starter is the original form of raising a loaf of real bread. There’s no dried yeast, milk, oils or sweeteners. The bread rises slowly, fermenting for several days and helping the growth of natural occurring yeast and bacteria in the flour. The big difference between sourdough bread and modern day bread is the source of the yeast. Today, we buy dried and preserved yeast as a powder, which is added to flour, water, sugar and salt. The water re-activates the yeast, which feeds on the sugar and starch to make the bread rise. 34

Modern breads tend to use cheaper flours with unnecessary ingredients and agents to accelerate the dough to rise faster. This process doesn’t allow enough time for the gluten to break down which makes it a lot harder to digest. The choice of quality flours and long fermentation time in soughdough makes it more digestible than standard loaves and more nutritious too. We are definitely seeing a shift in the demand for more traditional processes and ingredients in our foods. The supermarkets are responding to this with sourdough mixes but it’s not quite the real deal. So don’t be put off trying to create your own! There’s nothing better than home baked sourdough. Perfectly matched with everything from jam to mashed avocado or simply enjoyed with lashings of butter. This month at Summerhill we’re offering you a free sourdough recipe card and 50p off a bag of Mrs Middleton’s plain natural white and wholemeal stoneground flour which is locally milled in Bedfordshire using natural power and traditional methods.

Pop over to Cardington to see us for local, artisan and seasonal produce at great prices. Head to www.summerhillfarmshop.co.uk for more details.

Spinach and Wild Mushroom

Roulade

Ingredients For the Roulade: 500g Fresh spinach 1pt Milk 50g Butter 50g Plain flour 4 Eggs separated Salt & Pepper to season For the Filling: 250g Roast wild mushrooms 4 Spring onions, finely sliced 100g Grated Parmesan 250g Cream cheese

1. Preheat oven to 250ยบC /475ยบF. 2. Boil or steam spinach, drain well and chop in a blender. 3. Melt the butter in a pan, add the flour and stir for 1 minute to make a roux. 4. Add the milk to the roux and stir until mixture boils and thickens. Quickly stir in the egg yolks and spinach then transfer to a large bowl. 5. Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form, and then fold them into the spinach mixture. 6. Pour the mixture into a tray (25cm x 30 cm) lined with greaseproof paper and bake for 12-15minutes or until puffed and golden. Remove from oven, turn out onto a cooling rack and cover with a clean tea towel. 7. To make the filling, fold all the ingredients together and season to taste. Remove the greaseproof paper from the roulade, and spread the surface evenly with the wild mushroom filling. 8. Holding the tea towel with both hands, gently roll the roulade. Slice the roulade carefully to serve. This can be served hot with a vegetable ratatouille as we do but is also delicious served cold with a crisp salad.

EDUCATION

Developing Inquiring Minds

A

s parents and teachers we ask ourselves, how can we help our children become happy and successful? At Bedford Girls’ School we believe the answer lies in preparing students not for the world of today but for the world of tomorrow. Employers often tell us that graduates are unable to think for themselves, communicate clearly or work cross-functionally. We believe it is the role of educators to make sure students are prepared to flourish in a globalised world. Working in line with the latest pedagogical thinking and underpinned by the International Baccalaureate philosophy, Bedford Girls’ School focuses on providing a holistic education for girls aged 7 to 18. Central to the Schools ethos is delivering an excellent education which is not solely determined by academic success, but by developing wider learner attributes, ensuring students can face the opportunities of the wider world with confidence.

Budgeting is important and there are a few steps and tips you can take to save a little extra.

Go generic. There’s no need to spend extra money on over-the-counter medicine just because it’s a name brand. The same goes for food. In fact, generic brands are often identical ingredient-wise to namebrand products—they just lack the fancy labelling!

Work out what you spend your money on. A list will help you determine where you can make some cuts. Don’t impulse buy Ask yourself if you really need it and think carefully before making the purchase. Sleep on it as it might seem less appealing in the morning. Shop around. It is always worthwhile comparing prices. You may find that it may be cheaper in a

Beware of special offers. Never buy something you don’t need just because it’s on offer. These are designed to make you spend more, not less!

Breakfast At Tiffany’s

B

reakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic tale of Holly Golightly written by Truman Capote and so memorably portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in the iconic film, has been given a new lease of life as a stage play with music starring Georgia May Foote. Georgia was runner-up in last year’s Strictly Come Dancing. Her television credits include Katy Armstrong in Coronation Street and Gemma in This Is England. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is her professional stage debut. Director, Nikolai Foster, said “We are all thrilled Georgia is joining the Breakfast at Tiffany’s team. It’s hugely inspiring for all of us to be working with actors who will help encourage new generations of theatregoers to share Capote’s beautiful story.” Also in the cast are Matt Barber (Atticus Aldridge in Downton Abbey) as Fred, Victor McGuire (the sit-coms Trollied and Bread) as Joe Bell, Robert

Calvert as Doc, Naomi Cranston as Mag, Charlie De Melo as José, Tim Frances as Rusty Trawler/ Editor at 21, Andrew Joshi as Yunioshi, Melanie La Barrie as Mme Spanella, and Sevan Stephan as OJ Berman/Dr Goldman, with Katy Allen and Andy Watkins. Based on Truman Capote’s beloved masterwork, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is set in New York in 1943. Fred, a young writer from Louisiana, meets Holly Golightly, a charming, vivacious and utterly elusive good-time girl. Everyone falls in love with Holly – including Fred. But Fred is poor, and Holly’s other suitors include a playboy millionaire and the future president of Brazil. As war rages on in Europe, Holly begins to fall in love with Fred – just as her past catches up with her. Truman Capote’s classic novella has been adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize-winning Finalist and Tony and Olivier Award-winning playwright Richard Greenberg and contains memorable songs from the era as well as original music by Grant Olding and is directed by Nikolai Foster, the Artistic Director of Curve, with production design by Matthew Wright, lighting design by Ben Cracknell and sound design by Mic Pool. Following on from their sell out concert on the 7 July, Swing’s the thing, the region’s premier big band, return to “The Place” on Thursday 29th September with their new show, Basie, Bublé and Winehouse. Swing’s the thing’s attention to detail in replicating Basie’s understated yet captivating style of piano playing, his orchestra’s precision and explosive dynamic contrasts, prompted the BBC’s Dr. Swing to describe them as “the band that plays Basie better than Basie did”. Basie’s impeccable musical leadership made his band every musician’s favourite and throughout the 60’s and 70’s, Basie and his Orchestra were chosen to record albums with many luminaries including Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. These classic recordings went on to inspire and influence generations of up and coming singers, none more so than Amy Winehouse and Michael Bublé.

It was no coincidence that Tony Bennett invited both of them to perform on his chart topping “Duets II” album in 2011 and we firmly believe that under different circumstances, Amy Winehouse and Michael Bublé may well have recorded solo albums with Count Basie and his Orchestra and maybe, just maybe this concert could have been for real. We hope you agree. 8.00pm Start, Admission £12.50 Call 07802 705401 or book online: www.theplacebedford.org.uk STT will close their 2016 season on Thursday 8th Dec with their very own version of Top of the Pops 1930/40’s style.

LIZ MASON PILATES CLASSES

Monday mornings 9.45 - 10.45 And 11.00 to Midday At St.Mark’s Church Hall, Calder Rise, Brickhill £5.00 per session

Star Trek Beyond

The reboot of what is probably the most iconic science fiction TV series reaches its third film and the first one with the creative force behind it in the director’s chair, he instead moved over to the most iconic science fiction movie series… Star Wars. With a new director and new writers it was going to be an interesting experience seeing how well the vision behind this new Star Trek would do. Beyond manages to get in a lot of action and a couple of major set pieces but also slides in a bit of character interaction between different stars. The McCoy/Spock scenes are amongst the best in the series as we see how they really think of each other. In fact Karl Urban as McCoy gets the best lines and the best character exploring scenes throughout the film. There is a great new character introduced, Jaylah, but that is countered by a pretty uninteresting villain who leaves you confused about what he is up to throughout most of the film. All in all though this is a good action film full of great lines, humour and some great characterisation. If you liked the last two Star Trek films then this isn’t going to disappoint you.

by Neil Gaiman Shadow is looking forward to being released from prison, who wouldn’t? He has his loving wife Laura to return to and a job working for his best friend waiting for him, but his future crumbles when they are both killed in a car crash. Left with nothing, Shadow accepts a job working for the mysterious Mr Wednesday and so begins a mad road-trip across America as his boss approaches a disparate group of erstwhile friends. Slowly Shadow realises that Wednesday is trying to recruit the old gods, brought to America by the settlers and immigrants, to fight against the newly created gods of computers, media and money. But starting a war between the gods is dangerous. Wednesday’s motives aren’t all they appear to be and while some of the old gods are trying to live quiet lives there are other more malevolent creatures in the new world. Even Shadow, as he will eventually discover, isn’t entirely what he seems to be. Neil Gaiman has created a strange, alternative America and uses it to make us think about what we really choose to worship in this world. In a war between the old gods and the new, which side would you be on?

PETS

The secret life

of fleas! F

leas are small parasites that feed on the blood of cats, dogs and rabbits. They can cause skin irritation and anaemia in our pets and can also be the cause of itchy bites for pet owners too!

How do I know if my pet has fleas?

If you are unsure, groom your pet over a piece of damp white paper or towel. Any flea droppings will fall onto the paper and dissolve in the water to create red spots.

The flea life cycle

Each flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day. Eggs fall off your pet onto furniture and carpets, where they develop into larvae and then pupae. The pupae hatch out into adult fleas and the cycle begins again. Approximately 95% of the eggs, larvae and pupae will be found within the beds, rugs, sofas and carpets of the pet’s house, rather than on the pet itself.

It is strongly recommended that cats and dogs are treated with preventative flea treatments so that they never bring fleas into the house. 62

Treating fleas

It is strongly recommended that cats and dogs are treated with preventative flea treatments so that they never bring fleas into the house. These can be purchased as spot-on products, sprays, collars or tablets. Many of these have additional properties, such as action against ticks, mites or worms.

Resolving established flea problems

If your pet is not wearing a preventative flea treatment and brings fleas into the house, it will not take long before your house contains a large number of eggs, larvae and pupae. At this point, regular preventative flea treatments simply to kill the adult fleas on your pet will not be sufficient. Environmental treatments to act on the eggs and larvae in the house, and more powerful products to kill the adult fleas on your pet much faster, are recommended. For particularly stubborn infestations we are also able to provide a flea contraceptive to stop the flea life cycle in its tracks!

At Acorn House we stock a wide range of effective preventative and environmental flea control products. Our team will help you choose the most suitable products for your pet.

Your Tarotscopes for September 2016... by Susan Peppiatt Virgo

This month needs determination to see things through to the other side of issues which have gone on far too long to do with relationships or work. The strength needed will be there but you may have to dig deep to find it, the time to relax is on its way, but not this month.

Libra

Seeing old friends and renewing old contacts show as possible, with a return to work for some after a needed break, but tiredness and lack of relaxation features again towards the end of the month. Try to avoid the old stress levels.

Scorpio

A month of being in the spotlight could be uncomfortable for some, but shows as more exciting than daunting for most Scorpios. Prepare for a month of non-stop rushing around and being the centre of attention, but make sure that you are looking your best while you are rushed off of your feet.

Sagittarius

Tests, examinations and winning though despite the odds show as the main points this month. Because of the inquisitive nature of most born under this sign, study and learning show as an interest for many. This month brings new challenges and successes in these areas.

Capricorn

Happiness and young people’s energies are well aspected but be aware that everything takes its time and nothing worthwhile can ever be achieved without real effort. This is a very lucky month so while waiting for things to start it’s okay to have a few daydreams for the future.

Aquarius

There’s a loving feel about September, signalling good aspects for both established and new relationships. Those without a special someone at the moment will bring love close if efforts to get out and be happy are made. For those with a partner, quality time spent together pays off.

Pisces

This month is one of changes and possibilities but these won’t wait around forever. The cards urge to pick early so as not to miss out. Change can be scary, and fear can hold people back, but the exhilaration of successfully finding a new path can overcome many things so believe that it’s there.

Aries

New feelings of happiness and new beginnings show for those born under the sign of the Ram but there is a little wait for the final pieces of a jigsaw to fit together, so it’s wise to think of taking a little break and relaxing, as it’s been a tough year for many.

The Sanctuary, Harpur Street, Bedford www.spellboundsue.co.uk 66

Taurus

Travel and success show as being very busy and fulfilling but also confusing with new or different work being offered for many just when all seems settled. Look at every opportunity deeply, as some will not be all they seem; some better than they first appear and it’s hard to tell them apart at first.

Gemini

Feelings of sadness and depression show as lifting in the second week of September, and staying away for a good while. It looks as if a regime of some kind of exercise or study helps with this. The end of the month shows some kind of celebration and a closeness with family which has been missing recently.

Cancer

Decision time this month and a slight dilemma is evident; not a choice to find the lesser of two evils but a choice to be made on something which seems to have two excellent results in view. Not a time to consider money, but go for the one which brings the most happiness to the most people.

Leo

Stand out from the crowd and use the wisdom that has been gained over the previous few years. It’s wise to put on the best smile and be charming, as new people around this month can help with future plans in social and work aspects. Some older Leos will want to stay out of the limelight and take a break.

Drought Issues in Trees

D

rought can have many long-term detrimental effects on landscape plants. Lack of water greatly reduces the plant’s ability to manufacture food, which weakens the tree and limits future growth. Moisture stress also increases the tree’s susceptibility to harmful insect and disease pests that would not ordinarily attack healthy plants. Long-term drought eventually leads to branch dieback and tree decline. Consequently, concern has been raised by many professionals involved with tree care regarding the potential effects of the drought period recorded in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. For these reasons Bartlett’s Drought Recovery Program has been developed to help offset the effects of long term drought damage and consists of: • Irrigation. • Mulching. • Soil and Nutrient Management. • Pruning. • Pest and Disease Management. Thoroughly watering landscape plants during the late summer and autumn months, before the

onset of winter, is critical. Water stress inhibits the manufacture of key plant growth regulators that control dormancy. Woody plants need approximately 2.5cm of water per week from a combination of rainfall and irrigation. Without rainfall, plants require a minimum of 600 litres of water per 100 sq. metre of soil surface beneath the crown during each week of the growing season. Mulching trees and shrubs with organic materials, such as wood or bark chips, provides many plant health benefits. Mulch conserves soil moisture, suppresses weeds, insulates soil to reduce winter injury and improves the physical condition of soil. Plants weakened by moisture stress and nutrient deficiencies should be fertilised in autumn or spring following the drought when soils are re-wetted by rainfall. Bartlett’s Soil Prescription Fertilisation Program provides specific soil treatments based on soil nutrient analysis, plant species condition and client goals. Bartlett’s Prescription Program also evaluates soil pH, organic matter levels and other critical soil characteristics. Moisture stressed plants are more susceptible to insect borers, bark beetles as well as root, stem and foliage diseases. Mites are a particular concern on conifers spruce and hemlock. Professional inspection is the key to early detection and treatment of pests.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

BEST BULBS FOR

AUTUMN PLANTING By Hannah Stephenson

P

Planting bulbs in the autumn creates an optimism and air of anticipation for spring, when everything bursts into life and many of the bulb specialists, mail order and online suppliers are offering new types and more choice than ever.

Here are just a few of the best bulbs for planting this autumn:

Crocus ‘Vanguard’ – This pretty lilac specimen bridges the gap between smaller-flowered, earlier crocuses and the Marchflowering giants derived from C vernus. It needs good drainage and an open, sunny position to flower and looks good in drifts in grass mixed with short, early narcissi such as ‘Jetfire’. (www.suttons.co.uk) Allium ‘Silver Spring’ – A recent introduction from Israel, the white lollipop flowers on 75cm stems are unique, with each floret sporting a distinctive deep-pink centre. It flowers in May and June and is widely available. (www. dutchbulbs.co.uk)

74

Tulipa clusiana ‘Peppermint Stick’ – Not new, but worth a try. This pint-sized tulip, which grows to just 25cm, produces dainty flowers in April with deep rosy-red outer petals just edged silvery white. The inner petals show a deep steel-blue base when open in the sun. They originate from the Mediterranean and the Far East, and are popular in rockeries and wild gardens (www.avonbulbs.co.uk; www.miniaturebulbs.co.uk). Hyacinth ‘Prince of Love’ – Double-flowered hyacinths are a rarity, but this dramatic and fragrant variety with its densely-packed flower spikes looks great in beds, borders or patio pots. Bedfordshire

Police

A

n initiative to ensure patients experiencing a mental health crisis have fast access to care has been launched in Bedfordshire. The Mental Health Street Triage is a partnership between Bedfordshire Police, East of England Ambulance Trust, East London NHS Foundation Trust, Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group and Luton Clinical Commissioning Group. The pilot scheme will see a police officer, paramedic and mental health professional team up in one car to respond to mental health crisis calls 365 days a year. They will cover the whole county, operating from 3pm – 1am, with bases at Police HQ in Kempston and at Luton Police Station. The team will attend incidents where there is an immediate threat to life – someone threatening to self-harm – or where a third party has called the police or ambulance and expressed concern for someone. Bedfordshire Police lead for Mental Health awareness, Chief Inspector Jaki Whittred, said: “It’s an incredible project which will reduce the demand on emergency services across the county and hugely benefit patients who will receive faster access to care.” 78

Bedfordshire’s Domesday Mills Sharnbrook Mill.

T

his month we travel to the North of Bedfordshire’s fair county to another watermill dating back beyond the Norman invasion. Named as Stoke Mills in William the Conqueror’s 1086 Domesday Book, Sharnbrook Mill was shared at the time of the conquest between two lords. Sharnbrook itself was split with part of its land owned by the manor of Bletsoe, and the name itself meaning Dung-Brook, suggesting a shallow stream convenient for watering cows during a hot summer. Stoke Mills (plural because they owned more than one pair of millstones) was possibly a better name for an establishment producing food! The watermill flourished and grew over the centuries, with the mill pond and weirs configured to make the best of the low-lying, flood-prone fields. There have been tales of a dedicated mill-worker living across the flood plains in Radwell who would traverse the waterlogged meadows on a pair of stilts until he reached the mill bridge and ground that was high enough to finish his walk to work. What dedication! The mill was updated to a water turbine rather than the original water wheels, and in the Nineteenth century also became steam assisted. Later, in 1962 electricity was brought in and the mill survived as a working flour mill until 1969. After a millennium of continued production, the grand old building could on closure have easily 80

fallen into decay and disrepair, as so many others have done over the centuries. Sharnbrook on the other hand, had the dedicated team of the Sharnbrook Theatre Trust to rally round and revive the old pile with a new lease of life. A wonderful conversion of the large building into a theatre auditorium, complete with stage, dressing rooms, ticket-office and a licenced bar has left the building as one of Bedfordshire’s best drama venues. The Sharnbrook Mill Theatre puts on four productions a year and its dedicated team certainly make it a good night out. What’s more, you can now park outside with ease, or leave your stilts at the door.

BEDFORD I

t’s been a busy summer at Goldington Road with a number of new signings joining the squad as well as several youngsters arriving from Wasps and Saracens. Here’s your introduction to the new faces:

Ben Adams – the back rower is a former Australians Sevens star who joined the Blues from near-neighbours Cambridge. Adams has previously represented Queensland and Australian Schoolboys before moving on to Sunnybank Dragons in Queensland Premier Rugby. He joined Cambridge last summer and has been a huge hit at the club. Christian Judge – the talented young prop signed on at Goldington Road from Plymouth Albion and was the standout prop in National One last season. Standing at 5ft 11ins tall and weighing in at 116kg, Judge previously played for Launceston and helped Cornwall to victory in the 2014/15 County Championship at Twickenham. Dan Lewis – Fly half Lewis, 20, became the first player to be signed up to the new Blues Academy Development squad. The youngster has joined from French club Oyonnax having previously been a member of the Blues Academy in 2013/14, the Saracens Academy and an old boy of St. Joseph’s College, Ipswich. David Spelman – 23-year-old Spelman was part of the Cambridge team that suffered a narrow 12-6 defeat to Oxford in the Varsity game at Twickenham in December. The prop – who stands at six feet tall and weighs 112kg – is a former England Students player who also spent time with Old Albanians while undertaking his Masters 84

of Philosophy degree in Polar Studies at Jesus College. Ed Taylor – Taylor, 22, was captain of Loughborough Students and has represented England at Under 18 and 19 Levels and Wales Students. He was also part of the Blues squad which took part in last season’s Mobbs Memorial game at Goldington Road. Ed already has some Championship experience having featured for Rotherham Titans on a dual-registration deal while he was a member of the Worcester Warriors Academy. Standing at 6ft 4ins tall and able to play in the second or back row, the powerhouse forward is set to add plenty to the Blues pack next season. Elliot Clements-Hill – The 23-year-old has enjoyed spells with Oaklands College, Bedford Blues Academy, Saracens Academy and Plymouth Albion, but has impressed most during his time at Ampthill.

B

BLUES The fullback had been on trial with the Blues last summer before returning to Dillingham Park, but an impressive campaign for the A’s in which he racked up an incredible 229 points has secured a move to Goldington Road.

George Edgson – Standing at 6ft 1ins and weighing in at 110kg, the former England Under 18 hooker has signed on loan from Wasps and already has Championship experience having spent the second half of last season with Rotherham Titans. Jacob Fields – Blues fans will already be familiar with hooker Jacob Fields after he joined up with his new teammates a little earlier than expected at the end of last season. The 22-year-old was in fine form for Loughborough Students ever since joining from Bath Academy and joined Bedford early following an injury to Sam James. Standing at 5ft 11ins and weighing in at 108kg, the hooker has just completed his Sports Science and Management degree. Jason Hill – Fresh from helping Heriots on their way to an impressive treble as they were crowned BT Premiership champions, BT Scottish Cup winners and Charity Shield winners, the 26-year-old flanker joins from Glasgow Warriors. Hill, who stands 6ft 4ins tall and weighs 108kg played for the Scotland Club XV in 2015, scoring a try and being named man of the match in a 23-18 victory over the Ireland Club XV. Tom Farrell – The self-proclaimed ‘Blues adopted Irishman’ has been a part of the London Irish A-League squad this season, but he really made a name for himself while part of the Leinster Academy. Standing at 6ft 2ins tall and weighing in at 97kg, the centre has pace and power that will add plenty to the Blues midfield. Farrell has also represented Ireland at Under 19 and Under 20 levels while also

playing in the British & Irish Cup against Moseley and Ealing Trailfinders. Tom James – Running out at Goldington Road this season will be scrum half Tom James, 23, who has joined from Loughborough Students. James, who can also play at fullback, has captained Loughborough as well as featuring in the England Students squad. Will Carrick-Smith – Lock Carrick-Smith was the first Blues signing for the 2016/17 season having agreed a move from fellow Championship side London Scottish. The second row star who stands at an impressive 6ft 11ins and tips the scales at 129kg (that’s 20 stone 4lb) has had one season at the Exiles having previously gained Premiership experience with Exeter Chiefs. Following hugely successful seasons, prop Alex Lundberg and fullback Piers O’Conor have both rejoined the Blues from Wasps for the 2016/17 campaign. They will be joined once again by Saracens youngsters Joel Conlon (number 8), Tom Griffiths (centre), Hayden Thompson-Stringer (prop) and George Perkins (wing) as well as new faces Matt Gallagher (fullback), Billy Walker (prop) and Tom Whiteley (scrum half). 85

Eagles The

T

he preseason campaign went extremely well for the Eagles. Since the last Beds Life entry, we saw an entertaining game against Luton Town at the Eyrie, before finishing the home preseason campaign with a 1:0 win against a Peterborough United XI. Away trips to Bedford FC (1:0 win) and Ardley United FC (7:3) win meant that a solid, hard working but beneficial preseason came to a close. The League season started on Saturday 6th August at Farnborough FC. This was always going to be a difficult fixture, with Farnborough one of the favourites to gain promotion come May. It was therefore of great disappointment when after six minutes, Ashley Harris misjudged the flight of an attacking ball that looped over his head, allowing the hosts to take the lead. Three minutes later and things took a turn for the worst for the Eagles. Luke Knight, returning to the club after a number of years away, was judged to have handled the ball on the line and was shown a straight red card. Farnborough converted the penalty to lead by two. The

Eagles to their credit did not give up, and with ten men, pulled themselves back into the game and early in the second half were level at 2:2 following goals from Lee Hawkes and Danny Watson. However, defensive slip ups proved costly once more as the hosts grabbed a third and wrapped up a tight opening day win. The following Tuesday the Eagles welcome Royston Town to the Eyrie for the opening home fixture of the season. It was an end to end game, with few major chances. However, the Eagles defence allowed Royston midfielder Scott Bridges far too much space and he converted his header from eight yards for a 92nd minute winner. So at the time of writing the Eagles are still hoping for their first win of the season. September’s fixtues include home games on Saturday 17th September and Tuesday 27th September.
