The Bedford guided walks are about a mile and a half, taking around an hour and a half I Never Knew That – an introduction to Bedford’s history

This is the most commonly heard phrase after the completion of a Guided Walk. This Walk encompasses a wide range of information about Bedford and its many features that YOU never knew. Bedford has a story waiting to be told around every corner and you will learn the answer to all those questions about the town, but did not know who to ask.

Bedford in World War 2

One of our most popular walks, which reveals the secrets and mysteries of life in Bedford during World War II. What famous people were here and why? What was meant by the BBC during the War when announcing a programme from “Somewhere in the south of England”? And why has Bedford been called “the Spy Capital of the World”? Learn about Glenn Miller, the most famous bandleader of WW2, on both sides of the Atlantic, who was based in Bedford for six months with his American forces band and left from here on his final, fatal flight.

The Jewel in the Crown – the River Great Ouse

Learn who was the driving force behind the construction of the Embankment Gardens and the Suspension Bridge, often described as one of the finest riverside settings in England. Find out what happened to the town centre’s bandstand in WW2 and who built the boating lake?

Who Lived in a House Like That? Bedford has many impressive properties, often built as homes for the professional and the wealthy. Although they survive, few are still family homes. Join us to find out who lived where and why these Bedfordians were important to the town.

Silent Faces – Bedford’s outstanding statues and memorials Have you ever wondered what stories a statue would tell if it could talk? Then why not find out by joining the ‘Silent Faces’ walk with a guide from the Bedford Association of Tour Guides. The guides will tell the story of the statues and memorials that grace our town centre, telling of the

people and events that they commemorate and the history behind the sculpture itself. Why was it commissioned? How was it funded? Who was the sculptor? The Silent Faces walk explains why the people and events, rightly commemorated in Bedford Town Centre, deserve their place in the history of the town.

The Rise and Fall of Bedford Castle.

Discover what was undoubtedly the most difficult time Bedford has ever experienced when the Great Siege of Bedford Castle took place in 1224. Learn about the origins of Bedford Castle following the Norman Conquest in 1066 and the history of the de Beauchamp family who became the Barons of Bedford. Find out what happened to the ‘wicked Baron’ Falkes de Breaute who has come down in history as a cruel and brutal man, rebelling against the young King Henry. The siege lasted for almost two months and ended with the virtual demolition of the castle.

The Life and Times of John Bunyan John Bunyan rose from humble beginnings to become one of the world’s most widely read Christian writers. Bedford’s most famous son was a tinker, soldier, prisoner, pastor and author of The Pilgrim’s Progress one of the bestselling books of all time, which became an immediate success when it was published in 1678. His most celebrated work has never been out of print and has been translated into over 200 languages and dialects. Follow in the footsteps of the ‘Immortal Tinker’ and discover some of the places he knew and wrote about. In & Around Bedford 2019

Twinwood Festival – The Ultimate Vintage Music, Dance and Style Festival Friday 23rd August – Monday 26th August 2019 Clapham, Bedfordshire

Now in its eighteenth year, Twinwood Festival is a music and dance extravaganza like no other, with fifteen venues and more than one hundred live performances across a woodland site steeped in history and intrigue. The festival takes place across four days on the permanent site which was once the airfield where the famous American band Leader Glenn Miller took his last fateful flight in 1944. From the Hot Club, Gypsy Jazz and Big Band Swing of the 1920s, 30s and 40s, to the Rock ‘n’ Roll, Rhythm ‘n’ Blues, Pop and Soul of the 1950s, 60s and 70s, this is a spectacular vintage musical journey. Add to that the rustic sounds of Bluegrass, Country and Folk, with late evening partying to Electro-Swing and more. We have a large number of dance workshops, hair & beauty salons, shopping stalls, museums, bars, caterers and indoor venues, and the festival also hosts the prestigious “Mr & Miss Vintage UK” style competition, offering vintage enthusiasts the chance to win some amazing prizes. Exciting new additions for 2019 include a late-night comedy club, an extensive children’s entertainment area, and even more luxury glamping packages, including an on-site “Yurt Hotel”. www.twinwoodfestival.com facebook.com/ twinwoodevents Tel 01234 824773

100

years of Panacea

Eccentric, fantastic, fanatic and a bit bewildering. Over the 100 years since the Panacea Society was founded people from Bedford and beyond have been keen to scrutinise the religious sect located behind the high walls on Albany Road. Members of the Society would probably have understood this. They knew that what they believed was strange to most people and it would not have dulled their affection for the town they considered sacred. Visitors to the Panacea Museum are always keen to share what they knew of the group that was, until recently, the stuff of local legend. In response the Museum has developed an exhibition that focuses on the complex history of the Panacea Society and Trust to mark the centenary of the organisation.

Using newspaper articles, firsthand accounts from people who remember the Society and material from their archives, the exhibition will explore Bedford’s changing view of the Panacea Society during ten decades and how members of the group reacted to local perceptions of their lifestyle and beliefs. During the exhibition there will be a chance for visitors to share their memories of the organisation and the Panacea Museum would particularly like to hear from anyone who knew any of the members of the Society. Higgins

Panacea Museum The museum tells the extraordinary story of the Panacea Society, a remarkable religious community formed in the early twentieth century. For 90 years, members of the Society quietly lived, worked and worshipped God. Although they took care to reveal little about themselves to outsiders, the Society’s name became familiar to many through their national advertising campaign to open Joanna Southcott’s Box, a curious cultural icon of inter-war Britain. The Panacea Museum incorporates several beautiful Victorian buildings, set within gardens, that formed the original community’s ‘campus’. 9 Newnham Road, Bedford MK40 3NX Tel 01234 353178 www.panaceamuseum.co.uk

The Castle Mound is all that remains of Bedford castle, an 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress. It was destroyed by Henry III after his six week siege of 1224, ordering it to be reduced to shoulder height - view the model in front of The Higgins. Today the motte still stands, forming part of an archaeological park restored in 2009. The mound is located adjacent to The Higgins, in Bedford town centre, just off The Embankment, with a view out over the River.

ELSTOW ABBEY Elstow Abbey was founded in 1078 by the Countess Judith, niece of William the Conqueror. It became the eighth richest of the 106 Benedictine nunneries existing at the time. It retains many Norman features and in its hey-day, the building was twice its recent size. It is unusual in having a completely separate, 13th century, bell tower. John Bunyan was also baptised in the font to be found in the abbey. Church End, Elstow, Beds MK42 9XT Tel 01234 261477 abbeyelstow@gmail.com www.elstow-abbey.org.uk

Both the historic Ice House and the Lime Kiln located in Bedford’s Cultural Quarter, are now accessible through organised guided walks with the Bedford Association of Tour Guides. The Ice House is an underground, man-made chamber inside the Castle Mound at the heart of the historic site of Bedford Castle. It was built by the Higgins brewing family in the mid1800s and would have been used to store ice throughout the year. The central well is over 4m deep, large enough to have stored ice for use in all of the inns of Bedford when it was built. The Lime Kiln was built in the mid13thcentury to make quicklime, which was used in a number of medieval industries, including lime mortar for building with stone and in agriculture to help break down heavy clay soil. Access to both locations is possible through guided tours given by the Bedford Association of Tour Guides. Find out more about guided walks around Bedford here www.bedfordtourguides.org

MOWSBURY HILLTOP FORT Mowsbury Hillfort and Hill Meadow are unknown treasures to most Bedfordians. The Hillfort is a scheduled monument and county wildlife site. It is owned by Bedford Borough Council and managed as a public amenity site. The early Iron Age Hillfort was built with a single defensive bank and ditch around the perimeter, there is a medieval moated site inside the Hillfort. On view is a wide variety of habitats including wild flowers, mixed deciduous woodland, a series of ponds and a moat. The Friends of Putnoe Wood & Mowsbury Hillfort help manage the site for all to enjoy. For more information visit putnoemowsburyfriends.org.uk

STEVINGTON WINDMILL A wooden post mill, originally built around 1770, it was still in use until the 1930s. Constructed around a central post so that it can be turned to face the wind, this impressive and picturesque structure is the only complete windmill left in the county. For an inside view of the post mill, visitors can obtain a key from the Royal George pub in Silver Street, Stevington. A small returnable deposit is required. 2 Windmill Lane, Stevington MK43 7QZ

WILLINGTON DOVECOTE AND STABLES 16th-century stone dovecote and stable building belonging to the National Trust commissioned by Sir John Gostwick, who served as Cardinal Wolsey’s Master of Horse. They were completed around 1541 with the dovecote boasting an impressive 1,500 nesting boxes lining the walls. The cote and contemporary adjoining building known as ‘The Stables’ are thought to have been built with stone scavenged from nearby buildings demolished at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The Stables has features, clearly visible, which

indicate the original use may have been for accommodation or domestic purposes. Together they are all that remains of what was once a range of buildings that made up Gostwick’s estate. Opening hours are limited and admission by written appointment only; phone for details. Church End, Willington MK44 3PX Tel 01234 838278 www.nationaltrust.org.uk for details.

THE SHARNBROOK HOTEL

Park Lane, Sharnbrook, Bedford MK44 1LX VesuviO’s at The Sharnbrook Hotel is the proud home of the sumptuous VesuviO Italian Afternoon Tea offering a modern and Mediterranean twist on a Bedfordshire founded British classic. Tea consumption increased dramatically during the early nineteenth century and it is around this

time that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. At the time it was usual for people to take only two main meals a day, breakfast and dinner at around 8 o’clock in the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot of tea and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon – Respecting Bedfordshire’s roots & the astonishing Woburn Abbey serving up the traditional perfectly, we’ve chosen to create our own Italian Afternoon Tea Feast but with the same inspiration! £18.50 per person or add Bottomless Prosecco for £27.50 per person – available 1pm to 4pm Monday to Friday or by special arrangement outside these times. Contact us on 01234 783142 to make a reservation – £5 per person deposit required at time of booking. www.thesharnbrookhotel.com

WOBURN ABBEY, DUCHESS ANNA MARIA AFTERNOON TEA Woburn, Bedfordshire MK17 9WA Tel 01525 290 333

Woburn Abbey, the home of afternoon tea is offering a fantastic new event this year. Visit the Abbey for a fascinating illustrated talk, with full afternoon tea included, which covers how tea drinking was first introduced into England, how it was popularised and how afternoon tea became a social institution. The English custom of taking afternoon tea was popularised in the 1840’s by Duchess Anna Maria, wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford. A Lady-inWaiting to Queen Victoria, Anna Maria began the custom of taking afternoon tea at around 5.00pm and it became a popular part of the day at Woburn Abbey and the Royal Palaces. The custom was instigated by her shortly after becoming a Ladyin-Waiting as she found the time between lunch and dinner, sometimes as late as 9.00 or 10.00pm, far too long. She explained to her husband that she suffered a “sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. So she would invite the other ladies at the palace to take tea with her, which would be served around 5.00pm and 56 In & Around Bedford 2019

included delicate sandwiches and little triangular spicy cakes called ‘wigs’. Enjoy a glimpse into history and find out, through entertaining anecdotes, how Duchesses past and present like to take their afternoon tea. The talk is given in The Sculpture Gallery, by Simon Pestell, Head Housekeeper at Woburn Abbey and formerly Head Butler to the Duke and Duchess. Simon’s in-depth knowledge of the day-to-day running of great stately homes, including the custom of afternoon tea, has been gained through years of experience as a butler. Available dates are 24th July and 28th August www.woburnabbey.co.uk

The Bedford Swan Whether you are looking for a place to stay, dine, meet or party, this stunning venue is perfect for any special occasion. The Bedford Swan is currently in the second phase of a £5 Million refurbishment following the purchase of the hotel by Distinct Group, who also own The Hotel Cromwell in Old Stevenage as well as one of our favourite places to eat and drink, Rump and Wade British Brasserie. Steeped in history and full of character, The Swan’s two main function rooms have been renovated and the hotel has seen the introduction of a brand-new British Brasserie, Pen & Cob. Overlooking the Great Ouse River, Pen & Cob is a new art-deco inspired brasserie with a signature cocktail list, exclusive British menu and an exciting wine and drinks list, all served in a unique, contemporary boutique style. With floor-to-ceiling windows you’ll want to have pride of place at the poseur tables overlooking the river and with the living-wall inspired prints and luxury fabric chairs and stools, Pen & Cob’s seasonal dishes won’t be the only thing you’ll be admiring. The Bedford Swan refurbishment will now continue with plans including a new Spa atrium with a sauna, steam room and food and beverage areas, launching new tea rooms and a beautiful embankment dining space. They’ll also be doubling the size of the residents’ lounge and refurbishing the remaining function spaces and all 113 guest bedrooms. If you would like to book a table at Pen and Cob or enquire about The Bedford Swan hotel, function or meeting rooms, please email events@bedfordswanhotel.co.uk
