CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE FOR LOCAL PARKS
news
SCRAPPING SINGLE USE PLASTIC Bedford Borough Council has announced it aims to become a ‘single-use’ plastic-free Council by the end of 2020. Single-use plastics such as plastic cups, cutlery, straws and bottles are only used once before they are thrown away and because they are plastic, they take a long time to break. As a nation we are becoming more aware of the need to tackle the problem of plastic waste pollution. Locally Bedford Borough Council is taking the lead by working to eliminate single-use plastics. This will include working with our service suppliers, raising awareness among Council staff, replacing plastic cups and bottles at events and ensuring there is greater access to standpipes, and working with local schools. Bedford Borough Council has already signed the National Plastic Free Pledge and will be working with them and other plasticfree initiatives towards the common goal of eliminating single-use plastics, firstly within Council buildings and then across the Borough.
Priory Country Park has entered the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame having received a Certificate of Excellence for five years in a row. This entry to the Hall of Fame recognises five consecutive years of consistency high rates from travellers. TripAdvisor is an online travel site where people can review places they have visited. These ‘Certificates of Excellence’ are based on the public views of the park, so this achievement is a real testament to how highly Priory Country Park is valued by local residents and visitors. Bedford Park and Harrold-Odell Country Park have also been awarded Certificates of Excellence by TripAdvisor. 4

E V E LO P M E N T SUSTAINABLE D I spend quite a lot of my Ministerial time connecting to the Sustainable Development Goals – and indeed explaining my SDG lapel pin badge to people. Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly. The SDGs are part of Resolution 70/1 of the United Nations General Assembly “2030 Agenda”. The goals are broad and interdependent, yet each has a separate list of targets to achieve. The SDGs cover social and economic development issues including poverty, hunger, health, education, global warming, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, urbanization, environment and social justice. So as you can imagine my work with DFID and the FCO touch on a lot of these issues. Many of you will have also read recently about the Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference in London in October, and I receive a lot of communications from constituents about wildlife and animal welfare generally so I know how keen we are on this in Bedfordshire. The Illegal Wildlife Trade threatens to make some of the planet’s most extraordinary species extinct. It also destroys the livelihoods of some of the world’s poorest people, robbing communities of the great economic benefits of wildlife, including tourism. UK aid is giving fresh life to projects, whose aim is to protect these species and secure the futures of communities. This is a win for those 6
G OA L S
communities and a win for animal lovers across the world. None of us want to see these majestic animals dying out. DFID has just announced an additional £6 million to protect some of the world’s most iconic and endangered species including rhinos, elephants and pangolins. Also since 2014, the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund, managed by DEFRA, has been supporting a range of projects around the world that combat the illegal wildlife trade. This includes addressing the factors which drive demand for the illegal trade. It also includes supporting action to improve law enforcement and bring criminals to justice and to provide alternative jobs for those involved in the trade. The IWT Challenge Fund contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly to: Goal 14 – Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development; Goal 15 – Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reserve land degradation and halt biodiversity loss; and Goal 12 – sustainable consumption and production. So what a diverse set of issues we cover day to day at DFID – there is far more to a day or week in politics that the news headlines will ever tell you!

Homelessness AWA R E N E S S W E E K
On any given night, 76 people sleep rough on the streets of Bedford Borough. In 2018, we think that’s unacceptable, and we are committed to working with all our partners to change that. Symptoms include shoot dieback from the tip and hollowing of affected branches. Leopard moth larvae feed inside stems and branches for 2-3 years. People become homeless for any number of reasons – one of the biggest causes of rough sleeping is a relationship breakdown, but losing your job or struggles with mental health can also play a part. It really can happen to anyone – “Fred” was a graduate, with a good job. After 20 years of marriage, his wife asked him to leave; Fred stayed with friends for a while but found it hard to cope. He started drinking, and lost his job. His friends asked him to leave, and Fred ended up on the streets. We want to raise awareness of stories like Fred’s, and let the public know how they can help. This year, we are holding Homelessness Awareness Week in Bedford from the 26th November to
2 6 N OV E M B E R – 2 D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 8
the 2nd December. We will have an exhibition of art and literature produced by the homeless community; a film screening at Vue Cinema; open days at local homelessness charities and of course, SoupFest on Tuesday 27th November in Harpur Square. We will be launching a Homelessness Charter for our Borough, and asking the public to sign up to it, as well as a fund to directly help rough sleepers pay for items to help them off the streets, such as furniture, white goods, or a deposit for a flat.
supporting the homeless in our Borough. We encourage collaboration and good practice and we are committed to helping the most vulnerable in our society, ensuring that they are supported to find a way out of homelessness.

Saying Thank You
TO WO M E N O F T H E WA R
2018 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War and to commemorate this historic year, The Royal British Legion is leading the nation in saying Thank You to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world.
Whilst most of the soldiers on the frontline were men, The Royal British Legion has produced a very special brooch to say Thank You for the massive contribution made by women in the war, and to those women who continue to be such an integral part of the Armed Forces family today. Women not only played a huge role in directly helping the war effort, from being nurses in field hospitals to working in dangerous munitions factories, but the war also helped change women’s place in society and demonstrated that they were the physical and intellectual equal of men. For the first time, large numbers of women worked in the civil service, business, banks, shops, transport and farming. Many women who had been in solitary occupations prior to the war, such as domestic service, revelled in the “sisterhood” of larger groups. The Women of the War brooch is dedicated to the memory of the courageous women who served and lost their lives as a direct result of the First World War. Each brooch comes with a certificate commemorating the life of one of these brave women who ultimately went
20
on to change society and women’s place within it. With all profits raised from the sale of the brooches going directly to the Legion and their important work, they also help support the British Armed Forces family today.
The Women of the First World War brooch is available from The Royal British Legion’s official online shop www.poppyshop.org.uk for £29.99

BOOK
review Professor Stewart’s Casebook of Mathematical Mysteries
by Ian Stewart Like its wildly popular predecessors Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities and Hoard of Mathematical Treasures, Professor Stewart’s third book is a miscellany of over 150 mathematical curios and conundrums. He manages the subtle balancing act of appealing to all. Those with a mathematical background will find much to enjoy but so will those whose abiding memory of school maths is counting the minutes until the end-of-lesson bell. He does write about complicated things but in his hands it all becomes understandable and even fun. Casebook is packed full of humour. It follows the adventures of the hapless detective Hemlock Soames and his sidekick Dr John Watsup. By a remarkable coincidence they live at 222B Baker Street, just across the road from their more illustrious neighbour...who can never be mentioned by name. Designed to be read, and shared, in bite-sized chunks and it’s the sharing aspect which makes this book. You’ll have to try the number games and puzzles on members of your family and you won’t be able to stop yourself from sharing the fascinating facts and tricks such as ‘The Case of the Face-Down Aces’, a mathematical magic trick of quite devilish cunning...

FILM
Review Johnny English Strikes Again
Rowan Atkinson returns as Johnny English, England’s greatest spy. Since the last film he has retired and is now a teacher, who secretly instructs his class in spycraft. Called back into action English has to find out who is causing cyberattacks on the country’s infrastructure.
With Christmas fast approaching why not give your business some sparkle this festive season with Inspiring, Creative and Eye-Catching artwork. Whether it be advertising, menus or promotional leaflets/brochures Doug Dawson Creative can offer you a bespoke design service tailored to your needs.
01767 316139 07808 770845 doug@dougdawson.co.uk www.dougdawson.co.uk
Johnny English is not a film that will ever be called a classic, in fact it maybe cannot even be called good, but if you watch a film with Atkinson as the star you pretty much know exactly what you are going to get, lots of stupid comedy, pratfalls, misunderstandings and crazy situations and if you like that kind of thing then Johnny English Strikes Again will give you that by the bucket load. It completely disregards any facet of modern comedy and just sticks with what Atkinson is great at. The Story is just a coat rack to hang the mini sketches onto as English tries to uncover who is behind the attacks via a sequence of comedic situations. If you cannot laugh at this at least 6 times then you have no sense of humour at all. It is stupid, mindless fun but it does that so well that you just cannot help giggling.

When stepping into Bedford’s newest addition to the Food & Drink scene, be ready for a very pleasant surprise. What impressed us the most was the eclectic decor which was was amazing, with a real attention to detail, from the artwork on the walls to the gorgeous fabrics on the numerous chairs and sofas and the beautifully lit ‘Birdcage’ seating areas. The staff were really friendly and attentive too. We were lucky enough to be invited to try out the fantastic value for money £5 Lunch menu which consisted of the choice of the following – Southern-Fried Chicken Sandwich or Wrap, Fish Finger Brioche, Chilli Con Carne & Rice, Quinoa Chilli with Spicy Rice (Vg), Halloumi & Avocado Sandwich or Wrap (V), Chicken & Bacon Salad or Scampi & Chips. When I say we were lucky enough to try it out I mean we got to try EVERY DISH.... Needless to say, we didn’t get much done afterwards! Whilst everything was delicious with great sized portions, our favourite dish
was the Chicken & Bacon Salad, followed closely by the Scampi & Chips. We highly recommend you try them. As well as offering a tasty and varied day and evening menu, The Slug and Lettuce also prides itself on its fantastic cocktails. You can even experience a cocktail masterclass in the fun, vibrant cocktail bar – great for hen parties, birthdays of just a night out with a difference! All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Slug & Lettuce, Bedford and we will definitely be back again!

fireworks
G E T T I N G R E A DY F O R
As the firework season approaches, we need to remember that our furry friends can find the loud noises and flashes of light very frightening. What can we do to help?
KEEP PETS INDOORS Try to walk dogs before dusk and keep cats indoors after dark. Make sure both dogs and cats are microchipped so that you can be reunited with them if they do become startled and bolt.
MAKE THE HOUSE FEEL SAFE Drawing the curtains, having the television or radio on, and acting calmly yourself will help to minimise the effect of fireworks on your pet.
them to see the hiding place as a place where good things happen. Try not to disturb your pet when they are hiding.
TALK TO YOUR VET If your pet continues to show distress around fireworks despite these measures do speak to your vet. Medication can relieve distress and prevent noise fears from getting more severe over time. New medications specifically for dogs with firework fear have recently been
developed. One of these is suitable to use preventatively throughout the 2-3 week firework period, avoiding the problem of having to guess when the fireworks are going to go off! Any pet that suddenly becomes worried by noises when previously they were unconcerned should have a thorough health check because some medical conditions can cause noise phobias.
PROVIDE A SAFE HIDING PLACE Many dogs and cats choose to hide away when the fireworks start. Help your pet by providing a safe, enclosed space well in advance of the firework season. Dogs often appreciate a crate/cage with the door removed and a blanket over the top. Cats like to be up high, in igloo-style beds. During the day, place treats inside the hiding place for your pet to find, helping

Leopard Moth
(ZEUZERA PYRINA)
The leopard moth (Zeuzera pyrina) is an uncommon pest in the UK but can have severe impacts on garden plants or in orchards. It is found in most of England & East Wales but not known to be present in Ireland. Many cultivated species of trees and shrubs are recorded hosts with Maple and Elm more susceptible.
Symptoms include shoot dieback from the tip and hollowing of affected branches. Leopard moth larvae feed inside stems and branches for 2-3 years. An entry hole is found at the shoot tip with accumulation of pellets of sawdust-like frass. Wounding and sap bleeds may also be apparent on the trunk and branches, as well as holes left by woodpeckers trying to reach the larvae. The larvae will emerge to move between branches a number of times during their lifespan, eventually feeding within the trunk or larger branches. In this final stage, they move upwards rather than down, feeding under the bark and ultimately in the wood. Movement around the tree takes place from August to May. Feeding may kill or severely disfigure younger trees.
The adult moth is white with black spots, behind the head (thorax) is white and furry with six distinct black spots. The adults do not feed and only live 8-10 days. They may be found on trees from June to early August, often resting in the day as they only fly at night. Prune out and destroy any dying branches to kill the larvae; cut below the dieback until completely sound wood or the larvae itself is found.
Heavily infested trees may be removed to help protect those around them. If adults are present, spraying the whole tree with an appropriate insecticide might catch them and their eggs before they hatch. Affected trees should be surveyed for any other sources of stress and supported through plant health care practices e.g. mulching, nutrient analysis, irrigation etc. where appropriate

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

GARDENING
LeafM AT T E R Autumn leaves are so pretty on the trees but they can be rather inconvenient in the garden.
If they drift too deep on the lawn the grass underneath will die so there’s nothing to do but rake them up. However, these fallen leaves are a little autumn gift from nature and with them you can create leaf mould. Leaf mould is free garden nourishment, and it’s it’s like feeding your soil with the finest fillet steak. Leaf mould is what’s left when the dead, fallen leaves from deciduous trees and shrubs are heaped up and allowed to rot down. As they slowly decompose, only the toughest bits remain, eventually forming crumbly, dark brown crumbs. Leaf mould is easy to make, a delight to handle, and you can’t possibly overfeed your soil with it. Micro-organisms are the driving factor, performing an alchemy that gives the finished product an almost magical quality. Its fibrous nature retains moisture and enables free drainage, which means it also makes a great mulch for trilliums or wood anemones, whose natural habitat is woodland. 52
Simply sweeping leaves off paths and decking or patios will keep the garden looking cared for. I also remove any that have drifted around my herb garden because herbs like to be able to breathe. These tasks alone give me enough leaves to create plenty of lovely leaf mould. If you have enough room, create a separate leaf heap rather than simply adding leaves to compost. It’s quite simple to construct a leaf cage using chicken wire and posts. You can even bag your leaves in punctured black bin bags and put them in an out-of-the-
way corner. The puncturing is necessary to allow air to circulate. A leaf heap made this autumn will be ready by next autumn. While you’re tidying up the leaves it can be tempting to cut down faded perennials. But if you leave them, in a month or so you will find they have turned into wonderful sculptural winter skeletons which look incredibly beautiful in the frosts. It’s all down to personal taste of course, but I often leave perennials standing until February or March simply to provide a bit of interest over the winter.

Including the AFC Telford game, Bedford have played just 6 games. Four have been the FA Cup game described above, and three FA Trophy matches. The Eagles are still in this competition, after beating Cheshunt 2-1 away in a replay after drawing 1-1 at home, and producing a good 2nd half performance to beat Tilbury 4-1 away after going into half time 1-0 down. Bedford have been drawn away to Kingstonian in the next round. Only two matches have been played in the league in the last month, with Bedford beating Kempston Rovers at Hillgrounds by 3-1, and drawing at home to unbeaten Corby Town 1-1. The Eagles are only in 10th position in the league, but with games in hand on most of the teams above them, a couple of wins will propel the side into the playoffs. There are currently only two home fixtures in November. On the 10th Berkhamsted visit the Eyrie, and on the 24th Dunstable Town make the short journey to MK44 3LW. Both games are 3pm kick off. Away from the football field, the club will have news of another of the popular themed dinners, after selling out the Murder Mystery and Fawlty Towers evenings. Other events include corporate dinners, cocktail evenings, quiz nights and pool tournament evenings. Bedford Town is also taking bookings for all kinds of parties including Birthdays, Christenings, Weddings and Christmas. For more details, ring Angie Scutchings on 07767488797, and don’t forget to check the official website for details and news.
