Editors Note

Hello everyone,

After publishing the Grapevine in NG9 and Grapevine in Wollaton and Bramcote since 2008, I have now decided to publish Grapevine in Erewash in my own area of Sandiacre, with Long Eaton and Ilkeston. Grapevine has proven to be successful within these communities and over the years have built up a great following. Local advertisers help fund the Grapevine, and in return they have received coverage and community support for their businesses. This has helped to keep their businesses going, especially during and after the pandemic. As some of our Grapevine readers in our community are not on the internet, Grapevine has been invaluable for this local information.

I am keen to promote local businesses and events and to share with you what is happening in your area and neighbouring areas so please get in touch if you have any news worthy stories, updates or any events coming up, contact details below. If you would like to promote your business within the Grapevine please call me on 07854990608 to see how I can help you.We have a fabulous team of people who distribute Grapevine door to door, some have been doing this for many years, but I need more people to distribute for the Sandiacre, Long Eaton and Ilkeston areas, so please get in touch, you can earn some money and keep yourself fit.

I do have a Facebook page for Grapevine Magazine Online, this has been great to reach people in between our distribution, you can also view all recent magazines on the website: www.beechpublications.co.uk

In Grapevine this month: Gardening tips and info from Gardener Steve Win 2 tickets to see Public Image Limited - (John Lydon from Sex Pistols) Win 2 tickets to see Toyah, at the Devils Arse Cave in Castleton (a unique setting!) Community information, recipes, and lots more ! Please get in touch, e: sales@beechpublications.co.uk or call 07854990608, during working hours, leave a message and I will return your call. Until next time,

Stapleford’s 21st Produce Show - Strange Creations Forecast At New Venue.

Stapleford's Annual Produce Show will this year have more space to display competition entries, and generous catering facilities to keep participants and visitors well fed and watered from early morning set-up, right through and beyond the popular auction in the afternoon.

Albert Street Baptist Church has generously offered its space as this year's venue. Exhibits can be delivered from 8 a.m., with public admission at 1.30 p.m. Selected side shows and the Grand Auction contribute to the cost of the show. Entries in the Children's Classes are encouraged and always popular.

More information and show schedules are available by contacting the Secretary on 07754 430 637 or mailing contactsdgha@gmail.com.

The Annual Produce Show has been a popular summer festival in Stapleford for almost a quarter of a century. Covid wiped out two years’ shows and created real problems for the organisers in 2022. It is great to see new volunteers supporting the SDGHA’s Committee in staging this year’s event.

Punk legends Public Image Ltd are coming to COVENTRY – HMV Empire on Monday 25th September 2023

After fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed post-punk originators Public Image Ltd (PiL). Widely regarded as one of the most innovative bands of all time, their music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 Singles and 5 UK Top 20 Albums. With a shifting line-up and unique sound – fusing rock, dance, folk, pop and dub – Lydon guided the band from their debut album ‘First Issue’ in 1978 through to 1992’s ‘That What Is Not’, before a 17-year hiatus. Lydon reactivated PiL in 2009, touring extensively and releasing two critically acclaimed albums ‘This is PiL’ in 2012 followed by ‘What The World Needs Now…’ in 2015. John Lydon, Lu Edmonds, Scott Firth and Bruce Smith continue as PiL. They are the longest stable line-up in the band's history and continue to challenge and thrive.

It’s time for Gardening

Hello there, it's the Grapevine's resident gardener here, Gardener Steve, bringing you gardening advice, jobs to getting on with in your garden, Horticultural quizzes and local open garden events. If you have a garden question, would like to share a photo of your garden or have an event you would like to tell us about please get in touch using contact details below. Happy Gardening everyone ! Welcome to June, hope you are all keeping well and keeping busy in the garden, as I sit here and write this month's gardening, there is plenty to be doing out there in our gardens especially with these showers and sunshine, everything's growing topsy!, It’s summer and were halfway through the year! It really is a wonderful time in the garden as flowers are starting to appear in abundance and in the vegetable patch some things are starting to be harvested such as early new potatoes, oh I do love this time of year and with the longest day this month we get to make the most of the extra light and warmth - and that day I am out at first light with a cuppa and getting a couple of hours in the garden before starting a day at work, It really is amazing! It's pretty safe to assume that the frosts are behind us now (although nothing is guaranteed), so now is the time to plant out those plants that have been grown on in the greenhouse, but still be cautious of rushing this, making sure your plants are acclimatised to the outdoors by hardening them off but always have some fleece or newspaper just in case should a night frost be forecast. Here are a few jobs to be keeping you busy this month...

• Prune flowering shrubs such as Deutzia, Kolkwitzia, Weigela and Philadelphus after they have finished flowering

• Plant out annual summer bedding plants now the risk of frost has passed

• Lift and divide clumps of snowdrops and bluebells once the leaves start to go yellow

• Keep newly planted trees and shrubs well-watered whilst they establish a strong root system

• Continue to earth up potatoes as they grow. If you're growing potatoes in tubs just add more compost to halfway up the plant stem.

• There is still time to plant runner beans - sow them directly in the ground now.

• Although fruit trees will naturally shed some fruit (called the 'June drop'), aim to thin out congested branches further for bigger and better fruits.

• In the greenhouse, open vents and doors on warm days and dampen down on hot days to increase humidity

• If the weather turns very dry, set your mower blades higher to reduce stress on your lawn.

• Clip the new growth of evergreen hedges such as Privet, Box and Yew to keep them in shape.

Garden Day Trips Are Back for 2023 by Gardener Steve.

This month will see the return of our garden day trips organised by Blue Skies The Limit Events and Adventure, after returning last year for the first time since the covid outbreak we are so excited to get back out on the road throughout 2023! with gardens such as Birmingham Botanic's, Hidcote Manor and Southport Flower Show, we have plenty to look forward to. If you enjoy visiting gardens, flower shows, botanical gardens, stately homes, garden centres, meeting new friends and wanting a great day out why not join us, if youwould like to join our mailing list to receive details of all our upand-coming gardening adventures this year, please call 07413408751 or email:infoblueskiesthelimit@gmail.com.

Day trip to Hidcote Manor, Ernest Wilson Memorial Garden and Stratford Garden Centre - Saturday 1st July 2023.

Join us on our day trip to the Cotswolds and to the National Trust’s Hidcote Manor with stops at Chipping Campden and Stratford Garden Centre.

Hidcote is an Arts and Crafts garden and a stone’s throw from Stratford-upon-Avon. Created by the talented American horticulturist, Major Lawrence Johnston its colourful and intricately designed outdoor ‘rooms’ are always full of surprises. Explore the maze of narrow paved pathways and discover secret gardens, magnificent vistas and plants that burst with colour. Many of the plants found growing in the garden were collected from Johnston’s many plant hunting trips to faraway places and many of the plants have been named after Johnston or Hidcote, in recognition of the designer's talent and plantsmanship, for example 'Hidcote' (Lavandula angustifolia) 'Hidcote Gold' (Hypericum) just to name a few. It’s the perfect garden if you’re in need of garden and planting inspiration. The garden is separated by walls and hedges, each garden is different in character and scale. From the formal White Garden with it’s topiary doves to the vast Theatre Lawn, shady Stream Garden, colourful Fuchsia Garden and tranquil Bathing Pool Garden, there is something new at every turn.We will be making a short visit to Chipping Campden, Home to the Ernest Wilsonmemorial Garden, Wilson a renowned plant hunter travelled the world, this lovely small botanical garden in the heart of the village which opens up before you commemorates Ernest to which some of the plants he came across can be found in the garden. Journeying then to Stratford Garden Centre where there is a large selection of trees, Shrubs, and perennials for your garden along with all the tools, pots and equipment you’ll need to get going. Boasting The Shopping Courtyard where you will find independent boutique shops and if that isn't enough, stop for another bite to eat in The Lime Tree Restaurant. With a full day ahead of you, your day starts off from our pick-up point, The Plough Inn, Town Street, Sandiacre. Cost for this trip is £45.00 (Reduced rate for National Trust members £40) and this includes a light breakfast to start the day and entrance at Hidcote. For more information or to book your place, You can call the booking line on 07413408751 or email infoblueskiesthelimit@gmail.com places are limited and popular, so early booking is advised.

Planning a herb garden.

What herbs grow best together?

Mediterranean herbs, including Lavender, Oregano, Marjoram, Rosemary, Sage, and Thyme, tend to do well together, as they require many of the same growing conditions, mainly dry with good drainage .

Basil, Lovage, Tarragon, and Parsley, tend to grow better together in a slightly damper spot.

Dill and Lavender do not grow well together as Lavender prefers alkaline soils and Dill prefer more acidic.

Mint and Lemon Balm are spreaders in the garden and will overtake everything, it is wise to plant them in a individual spot on their own.

If space in the garden is an issue, try planting in suitable containers.

Once you get your herb garden up and running you will end up with a collection that will last for years.

Flowering and aromatic herbs are a magnet for pollinating insects, which will benefit your garden too.

The track, located on the Ilkeston Road Recreation Ground, is a fun and safe mini road network on which to learn and practice cycling safely. It is open and available to use 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The track features a 200 metre network of mini roads, including road markings, zebra crossings, a roundabout and road signs. In addition, 600 metres of 3 metre-wide tarmac pathways have been built around the rec for more cycling and walking.

The Cycle Training Track has been funded through the Stapleford Towns Fund’s £4.6m Safer Cycling Scheme which aims to enable more people to travel sustainably through three key projects:

Phase 1 - The Stapleford Cycle Hub on the Ilkeston Road Recreation to provide free bicycle repairs, servicing and cycling advice to local people.

Phase 2 - The Cycle Training Track for cycling practice and confidence building.

Phase 3 - The creation of 3km of new cycle paths around the town – construction dates TBC.

Fast Followers funding brings net zero boost to Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Councils in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire (D2N2) have been awarded over £277,000 of funding to accelerate progress on the regions’ net zero ambitions. Fast Followers is part of Innovate UK’s Net Zero Living Programme, designed to help places and businesses across the UK to accelerate the delivery of the transition to Net Zero.

The bid was led by Nottingham City Council in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council, Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Broxtowe Borough Council, Gedling Borough Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council.

Achieving net zero goals in the region requires partners to work together, and the Fast Followers funding will build on the positive collaboration between Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to date.

Councillor Corall Jenkins, Portfolio Holder for Energy, Environment, and Waste Services and Parks at Nottingham City Council, said: “It’s fantastic news that we’ve secured this funding to progress our net zero ambitions through partnership working. Local authorities have been ambitious in their plans to tackle the climate crisis and are well-placed to lead this agenda. Research shows that around a third of the UK’s emissions can be influenced by local authorities, but opportunities are often missed due to plans being developed and delivered separately. Our collaborative approach across D2N2 through the Fast Followers scheme will allow us to overcome these challenges to scale up our efforts to reach Nottingham’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2028.”

The project will be run through the Midlands Net Zero Hub (which is accountable to Nottingham City Council) and will be used to create a consistent and coordinated approach across the D2N2 region to supporting residents, businesses and communities to understand how their actions contribute to climate change. The aim is to embed long-term positive behaviour changes to reduce carbon emissions. Not only does taking climate action reduce carbon emissions, but can also bring benefits including reduced bills, cleaner air quality and improved health outcomes. A Stakeholder Engagement Plan will be created which will build on successes that have already been achieved in partnership across the region. For example, the Nottinghamshire Green Rewards platform incentivises users to make sustainable choices to move up the leader board and be in with the chance to win monthly prizes. More than 6,000 people across the region have signed up and avoided the equivalent of 426 tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere.

28 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

A lack of consistent messaging to citizens and businesses about sustainable choices available is an issue for local authorities reaching climate goals. For example, misinformation about low carbon technologies such as heat pumps is limiting take up in households. Engaging with citizens and organisations is vital to mitigating the worst impacts of the climate crisis. Through schemes such as Notts Green Rewards, we can see the successes that we can achieve by working in partnership. I’m looking forward to seeing what more can be achieved through the Fast Followers programme,” Wayne Bexton, Director of Environment and Sustainability at Nottingham City Council, said.

In addition to work to engage with citizens and organisations in the region, the funding will also be used to support the development of a co-county Energy Plan. This planning will support climate ambitions across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire and has the potential identify the most effective pathway to decarbonising each district across D2N2.

Michael Gallagher, Head of Midlands Net Zero Hub, said: “A recent report into the socio-economic benefits of Energy Planning for the region outlined that the total net benefit is considered to be £11bn from an investment of £7.6bn. By investing in this sector, we can create more than 4,500 jobs which demonstrates how we can use the green revolution to grow the economy. By understanding how we can transform our local energy system using the Fast Followers funding, we are presented with an opportunity to unlock significantly larger than expected benefits for the region.”

Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport and Sustainability at Derby City Council commented: “We’re delighted to have received this funding that will allow us and our key partners in the region to move forward with key projects to decarbonise Derby and neighbouring areas.

“While we have an ambitious Climate Change Action Plan for the Council, we know that we also need to work closely with our communities and partners to empower everyone to join us on our journey to Net Zero. Local authorities are key players in supporting the wider area and providing leadership on decarbonisation ambitions.”

Mike Biddle, Executive Director, Net Zero, Innovate UK, said: "Innovate UK’s Net Zero Living Programme aims to transform our towns, cities, and communities through removing the barriers to adoption and creating demand for new Net Zero technologies. This cohort of Fast Followers winners demonstrate innovative ideas that are designed at grass roots level specifically to overcome their particular barriers and sometimes unique challenges. Seeing the range of projects is inspiring and, as well as running their individual initiatives, the Local Authorities will share best-practice allowing others to capitalise on proven solutions."

You can find out more about work being done to reach net zero in the Midlands by visiting the Midlands Net Zero Hub website: www.midlandsnetzerohub.co.uk and following the Hub on LinkedIn.

Bedroom Health And Hygiene.

Do you want to sleep better? Let’s have a look at bedroom health and hygiene. When you vacumm and dust your bedroom regularly, you ensure that the air is clear of allergens and dust particles, it also prevents bacteria and viruses from harbouring in you home. With a clean room and fresh air, your sleep will be better and healthier. Most people are advised to wash bedding every week, but these should be washed at a minimum setting of 60`C. A recent study found that just after one week, pillowcases can have around 17 thousand times more bacteria than a toilet seat! A mattress protector is advised to reduce the chance of sweat and skin particlesgetting into your mattress. Be sure to vacuum you mattress at least once a month, paying extra attention to buttons and piping. Wash or dry clean duvets at least twice a year in the Spring and late Summer.(Most duvets can be washed in a washing machinecheck your machine). An important tip: Leave your bed unmade to let it cool and air out on a daily basis. Warmth and moisture from your body encourage dust mite growth, bad news especially for Asthma sufferers .Get into the habit of when you`re getting ready in the morning , pull the duvet off the bed and let the bedding breathe to avoid a build up of moisture allowing those mites to thrive and then place them back later in the day. If you cannot bear to leave the bed “unmade” place them back before you leave the house. At the weekends, or on bed changing day, leave all bedding off for a few hours. Do you ever get out of the shower and then leave your wet towel on the bed, forget about it, and realise it has been there all day? Moist environments encourage mould. If you are leaving damp towels and, therefore, damp bedding, mould can grow and release spores. If you have asthma, you are likely more sensitive to these spores which can trigger your symptoms or make them worse. Instead, hang your towel outside to dry or pop it in the tumble dryer. If you have to dry them inside, make sure the room is well ventilated to avoid encouraging mould growth. Have a comfortable mattress and pillow - your sleeping surface is critical to comfort and a pain free sleep, so choose the best mattress and pillow foryour needs wisely. Visit an reputable bed shop who can give the best advice on choosing the right mattress for you .Remember mattresses don’t last forever and as we sleep on them every night , it’s important to update your old one. There is nothing nicer than a comfortable bed, pillows and excellent bedding. The sheets are important too, choose the right ones for your needs. People spend 100”s of pounds on phones, ipads etc, but never think about spending money on a good mattress! and suitable bedding this should be top priorty for your health and well being.

32 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

Try not to use ipads, iphones or even watch a tv in bed if you suffer from poor sleeping patterns. A clutter free bedroom is helpful for a calmer state of mind and cultivates a positive space for sleep. Dim the lights. Artificial lighting and light pollution have some pretty negative effects on your sleep patterns. Choose relaxing colours in a bedroom.Pale greens, -Quiet and restful, green is a soothing colour that can invite harmony and diffuse anxiety. Blue -Blues are especially known to have a relaxing effect perfect for creating a serene feeling at home,–A highly peaceful colour, blue can be especially helpful for stress management because it can encourage a powerful sense of calm.

Yellows- pale yellow is a happy colour and in a north facing bedroom, brings happiness even on a dull grey day. Talking of grey, grey can be depressing if used in a bedroom, it can seem like waking up to a grey morning every day, use it sparingly and team it with other colours or with white. Everyone has their own idea for colour in a bedroom, but reds and oranges are not advisable if you are looking for calm and serene place to relax and sleep. If you are feeling unfreshed when you wake up each day, and feel tired throughout the day, and you are not suffering from any specific health problems, it may be that your sleeping patterns are interrupted. Spend some time adressing this problem and you will benefit in the long term. Look at your bed hygiene, your mattress and pillows, the bedroom itself, the colour and decor, take advantantage of this time of the year, Spring, to improve your overall health .

Freezing food is a not only a great time saver, but helps to save pennies too. Look out for the bargain sales at supermarkets, check the sell by date, and if it can be frozen. There may be a few foods that can be frozen that surprise you!

Eggs, milk, cheese, even cake! – in fact, almost anything can be frozen. Pop a label on whatever you freeze remember to include the date.

Eggs - If you’re going to use them all straightaway, you can freeze them by cracking them into a sealable container. If you’re likely to need just the yolks or just the whites for a particular dish – you can also freeze the two separately.

Dairy - Milk: you can freeze in plastic containers – small ones work best, (and great as a standby), big containers take a long time to defrost and use up a lot of space in the freezer. Always pour a bit out before putting the lid back on, as milk expands when it freezes! Freeze it as soon as possible after buying and put it in the fridge to thaw out when you need it. Give it a good shake before pouring, and you must use it within 24 hours. Do not re-freeze. Cream: whip fresh cream and freeze in a plastic container (note: double cream freezes better than single).

Butter: freeze in cubes and add them straight into the saucepan when you’re cooking. Alternatively, defrost in the microwave in short bursts on a low setting.

Cheese: the easiest way to freeze cheese is to grate it first – then it’s ready and waiting for a quick and easy topping for all your favourite dishes.

Fruit and veg - Oranges do freeze well, as does much all fruit and veg. Having fruit on standby is great when you’re making smoothies.

Oranges, lemons and grapefruit freeze well cut into slices.

Plunge sliced apples into boiling water for a couple of minutes and then freeze them in a single layer, packing them into bags once they’ve frozen.

Vegetables. Parboil uncooked carrots for a few minutes and cool them in iced water before freezing them. You could even add carrot to a vegetable stock freezer bag along with onions and celery for stews or soups.

Potatoes.-Did you know that around 4.4 million whole potatoes are thrown out in the UK each day, making them one of the country’s most wasted foods? They can be frozen no matter how they’re cooked, and uncooked potatoes just need a 5-minute boil before they’re ready to be frozen too.

36 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS . Love Food Hate Waste

Rice - Many people think that you can’t freeze cooked rice, but you can! Simply cool it quickly by placing the container of rice in cold water, cover it and pop it into the freezer within an hour of cooking. Before eating, defrost the rice in the fridge and then reheat it until it’s piping hot before serving straightaway. Herbs -Fresh herbs never seem to last long, and what’s more, they often come in big bags and you only use a small quantity. Instead of lettingthem rot, simply freeze them whole in bags, or chop them up and freeze them in water in an ice cube tray. You can add them into your cooking still frozen!

The freezer is also great for loaves of bread, packets of croissants, cakes and any other baked goods you’re not going to get through. You can pop a loaf of bread in the freezer and take a slice or two out at a time whenever you need bread. You don’t even need to defrost it – you can make sandwiches from frozen bread in the morning and they’ll defrost by lunchtime with the filling staying nice and cool. Ideal for the summer. You can also pop a slice of frozen bread in the toaster (just allow slightly more time than you would if you were toasting it from fresh).

Tip: Give sliced loaves a quick tap on a hard surface before freezing them – it’ll stop the slices sticking together! If you’re freezing cake, cut it into slices and put greaseproof paper between the slices so that you can easily take out a piece at a time.

Nottingham Castle Re-opens.

New ticketing arrangements reveal adults pay £12 for all-year access, 15 and under go free. Nottingham City Council is proud to announce that Nottingham Castle will reopen once again to visitors on Monday 26th June, bringing Nottingham’s heritage back to the heart and soul of the City. Brand new admission arrangements mean that an adult pays £12 once and can visit all year, while accompanied children 15 years old and under go free with each paying adult (up to 3 children) – making it a great, affordable family-friendly day out. Advance bookings are now available from the new Nottingham Castle website www. nottinghamcastle.org.uk. The new admission arrangement will include access to the grounds, Brewhouse Yard Cottages, Robin Hood Adventures and Rebellion Galleries and the castle museum, unlimited for the 12 month period. The announcement comes as part of International Museums Day and after the castle grounds hosted a sold-out screening of the Eurovision Song Contest final and crowds of visitors enjoyed the King’s Coronation and Coronation Concert screenings in May. Nottingham City Council’s portfolio holder for leisure, culture and planning, Cllr Pavlos Kotsonis, said: “I am delighted to be able to announce that Nottingham Castle will open again on Monday 26th June. Nottingham without its castle is like Robin Hood without his merry men, so it’s going to be fantastic to have it back at the heart of our city’s life.“We’ve already seen with the Coronation events and the sold-out Eurovision event that people are eager to return to the site – and we’re very keen to welcome them back“We hope this announcement will come as welcome news, as we have endeavoured to listen to what visitors didn’t like about the Trust’s admission arrangements, and I believe the simpler pricing and exceptional value we are announcing will help to encourage visitors, near and far, to come back again and again.”

The City Council was handed the historical site back by Liquidators for Nottingham Castle Trust which declared itself insolvent last November. A decision was taken by the Council’s Executive Board on 21st March 2023 to work towards reopening the whole site in June managed directly by Nottingham City Council as part of its Museums and Galleries service.

Following the site’s £31m redevelopment, there is a new visitor centre and café at the entrance, a Hood’s Hideout adventure playground in the moat, as well as interpretative signage around the grounds to discover the site of the lost medieval castle.

“My new app” by the Grapevine Editor.

I have only been told about this wonderful informative app called Merlin Bird ID, it’s free to use. It’s like a “Shazam” for birds as someone recently told me. I’m not a bird watcher, but I do like to know what birds are in my garden and the different sounds they make. This app was designed for beginner and intermediate bird watchers, and created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in partnership with Birds in the Hand LLC and thousands of volunteer citizen scientists and bird enthusiasts . It has Photo ID, Sound ID (it records the birds sounds for you and informs you straight away) plus information about each bird you hear. You can also explore with the app likely birds to your area. It can be used anywhere if you’re out and about, and can be used in most countries around the world. It’s worth downloading , I was amazed how many types of birds visit my garden every day. Have a go, it’s superb!

More people can reach their peak fitness goals thanks to Towns Fund grant.

A fitness centre in Stapleford is now able to offer cutting-edge body monitoring services and cardio equipment to its customers thanks to a £24k Towns Fund grant.

Peak My Body Fitness Suite, which opened on Derby Road in July 2022, offers more than a traditional gym through personal and semi-private fitness training, sports performance and endurance training and coaching. Services also include ‘VO2 Max’ physiology and metabolic testing, which measure a clients' lung capacity and metabolism to accurately tailor training plans and nutrition to get the maximum benefits for their individual needs. VO2 Max testing can also support people in their recovery from Covid 19.

The grant, made available through the Stapleford Towns Fund’s Town Centre Recovery Fund scheme, has recently funded new cardio and leg training equipment, more dumbbells, a top-of-the-range resisted cable machine, a body composition scanner for people to see where they are losing body fat or gaining muscle, a new system to allow people to access the suite privately at times that suit them, and general redecoration of the suite, all of which has enabled the business to expand.

Peak My Body is owned and run by personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach, Mike Millers, 30, from Stapleford. Mike saw a gap in town’s gym offer to provide uniquely tailored training and fitness plans to help local people achieve their goals – from mums looking to get fit to sports people and athletes. Trained in sports strength and conditioning, and research in sports performance, Mike offers a wealth of experience from personal training privately and at the University of Nottingham, and from his time spent in Texas, USA, working at Olympic athlete Michael Johnson’s facility, coaching NFL American footballers NBA basketballers, collegiate athletes and children.

Mike Millers

Mike said: “I’m so grateful for this grant as it has made a massive difference to my business. With the addition of this new equipment and the new private access, which I wouldn’t have been able to fund for a many years, I’ve been able take my fitness offer to the next level, which will lead to more clients and the recruitment of more personal trainers to my team.”

As a born and bred Stapleford man, Mike is proud to open his first fitness centre in the town. He said: “I’ve lived in Stapleford all my life and it’s great to finally see some investment in the town. I’m particularly looking forward to £6.4m Community Centre planned for the Hickings Lane Rec which will be huge for people of all ages and great for the town as sports can be big business for everyone. “The sports facilities it will offer will be top quality and I’d love to be able to support local clubs with speed and agility training, and offer sports, speed and agility camps for kids over the holidays. So much to look forward to – the town definitely has a bright future.”

Ian Jowett, Chair of the Stapleford Towns Fund Board, said: “It’s fantastic that Mike chose to open his first fitness centre in his home town, offering local people a new way to keep fit. The Town Centre Recovery Fund aims to give local businesses the boost they need to build a strong future and we wish Mike the very best for the future.”This is one of more than 70 grants to be awarded through the £1m Town Centre Recovery Fund (which closed on 31 January 2023) - one of six projects funded through the £21.1m Stapleford Towns Fund, part of the Government’s £3.6bn Towns Deal.

Grapevine Tips...... Decluttering your home.

Cluttered home? too tired or overwhelmed to declutter, here are some good tips.

Decluttering isn’t just about clearing your home of clutter, period, for many of us, decluttering can have a positive impact on mental health but it can be daunting. People can feel held back by their mess. Long-term mess often reflects our past selves, so decluttering can make us feel we have a fresh start, which can be energising. In contrast, living in a cluttered environment can increase stress and anxiety. If you have a problem with organization, confide in a friend or family member, since your friends won’t have the same attachment to items like you do, it might help you detach yourself from those said items which will ultimately speed up the process to a clutter free home. Firstly, write down a list of rooms that are getting you down, starting with the messiest one first. Start off by allocating some time each day that works within your daily schedule, it could be five, 10 or 30 minutes or even at the weekend.

Tackle one room at a time - have boxes or bags ready and sort. Label boxes or bags1.Keep 2. Donate 3.Throw Away 4. Recycle. Take a photo before you start. It’s going to look worse before it gets better but if you have before and after photos, you will be able to see the progress. Doing one room at a time is more manageable and you can tackle it bit by bit. (Don’t be tempted to move to another room half way through the sorting, or until that room is finished). Switch off your phone and by avoiding distractions you will sail through the task. Start with one cupboard or drawer at a time, take out items that are broken, not used, gone out of date, or just not wanted anymore. Anything not used for 6 months is probably not going to be used anyway.

Invest in some excellent storage boxes to place things in that needs to be saved.

Arrange in subject groups – ie: all out-of-season clothes in one place, and is easily identifiable: labelled or see-through for quick identification. Space-saving options are a must – stackable boxes, vacuum-pack bags, furniture that doubles up as storage, such as an ottoman with lift-up lid. Bear in mind that lids or covers offer better protection from dust, dirt and bugs than open storage, too.

52 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE
WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

Move your decluttered items out of the area and place them in a car (if possible) or at least by the front door. You should aim to donate/recycle/tip your decluttered items as soon as possible, otherwise just left is defeating the task in hand. Selling unwanted items can be difficult, but remember it is unwanted so it’s not used, get something for it - better the money in your pocket, and a clutter free home. To prevent cluttering in the future, only buy something that is needed and will be used.

The biggest reason why people fall back to clutter is because the items that are used aren’t put back in their proper place. Think about the bathroom, declutter can be done every day. Do you need 5 or 6 shampoo bottles in the shower, or at the side of the bath? The same with shower gels? Get in to the habit of only using one until the bottle is empty. Store the rest in a cupboard, or a basket. Try to keep the bathroom as streamlined and functional as possible. After you’ve decluttered, you’ll be amazed at how much less you will buy as you’ll be aware that you really don’t need lots of things to make you happy. Clutter often blinds us to what we really own. Sorting everything out and giving your home a good declutter can help prevent you from making frivolous purchases in the future. With less junk in your home, there will be fewer things to dust and less stuff to manoeuvre the hoover around. Cleaning and tidying a decluttered home is a breeze

Nottingham began in the 6th century as a small settlement called Snotta inga ham. It was under the direct rule of the Snotingas , an Anglo-Saxon tribe. In the late 9th century the Danes conquered North East and Eastern England. They turned Nottingham into a fortified settlement or burgh, the community became one of the five towns of the Danelaw, along with Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, and Stamford.

The two famous lions at the front of the Council House in the Market Square in Nottingham are officially named after two brothers, kings of Greek mythology, Agamemnon on the left, the right lion is called Menelaus.

The hour bell in the Council House, Market Square , Nottingham was nicknamed "Little John" since the building opened. The bell was cast by the world-famous bell founders John Taylor & Co of Loughborough in 1927.

The bell is the 5th heaviest in the UK and the E-flat tone has the deepest tone in the country.

The first earthquake ever recorded in Nottinghamshire was on April 25th 1180.

Nottingham local Arthur Mee, born in Stapleford and a former editor of the Nottingham Post, is said to have started a myth that lemings commit mass suicide, he incorrectly included this in an edition of his Children’s Encyclopedia, published from 1908 to 1964.

The Caves of Nottingham are a network of winding passages below the streets of the city. Nottingham boasts the UK’s largest network of over 800 subterranean caves that has history chiseled into it’s limestone/ sandstone structure, these were used from the WWII air raid shelters to right back to back to the medieval tanneries. The marsh area of the city was well known for its tanneries and by 1667, there were around 47.Many of the caves were man made, and used for bewing and storing beer, due to the cool temperature throughout the year. The early settlers in the 7th century found that the soft sandstone terrain was easy to carve.

Ibuprofen was discovered in Nottingham by Dr Stewart Adams- as was Tarmac(Nottingham’s Radcliffe Road was the world’s first Tarmac road).

The traffic light was invented by a Nottingham man John Peake Knight 1868.

The first one was placed in Westminster London. His system had a revolving gas-powered lantern with a red and a green light.

HP sauce was invented in Nottingham by David Hoe from Bottesford. The recipe was sold to a grocer named Frederick Garton in Nottingham who registered the name HP sauce in 1895.

The MRI scanner was invented in Nottingham in 1977 by Sir Peter Mansfield. He was born in London in 1933 and moved to Nottingham to become a lecturer at the department of physics at the University of Nottingham in 1964.In 1968, Sir Peter was appointed senior lecturer and it was during this time he and his colleagues were credited with the invention of the MRI scanner.

Nottingham was the first city to install braille signs in its shopping centres.

Mahatma Gandhi visited Beeston in 1931. He was visiting his nephew JV Joshi, who was studying and lodging in Linden Grove Beeston Rylands, a blue plaque can be seen outside the house.

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) recently hosted another successful taster day where doctors and paramedics showcased the multifaceted aspects of pre-hospital emergency medicine (PHEM) to trainee doctors.

PHEM is a rapidly expanding and evolving medical sub-speciality, and yet it is rarely included in medical school or foundation curricula, making it hard for junior doctors and medical students to identify it as a career option.

LNAA organized this special taster day as a way for trainee doctors to gain an insight as to the role of a doctor working within the Air Ambulance environment.

Shayda Karimi, a doctor with LNAA put the special day together and is delighted with the enthusiasm shown by the delegates. She said: “We showcased a typical shift as a PHEM/HEMS doctor, explaining the relationship between the ambulance service paramedics and colleagues from other emergency services. We also explained the importance of teamwork when working in a stressful environment with critically ill patients.” The simulations that illustrated how difficult it is for pre-hospital teams to treat patients at the scene of an incident showed the stark difference to treating patients in hospitals. The tour of the helicopter allowed everyone to see how much equipment can be carried on each mission, and conversations with the pilots, doctors, and paramedics gave a very real account of the rich rewards if the decided to follow a career as a HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) doctor. Cat Anderson, a year 2 foundation doctor due to start a training post in the Emergency Department at Peterborough City Hospital next year believes the day has strengthened her desire to follow a career in pre-hospital emergency medicine. She said: “The difference between working in a hospital and working for an Air Ambulance was continually highlighted throughout the day. I enjoy being challenged and this role will certainly do that. It is about coming to patients in their homes and communities, working in any type of situation using ground-breaking technology alongside the rest of your team. That is why I want to be a PHEM doctor.”

ABOUT LNAA - LNAA is one of the UK’s leading Helicopter Emergency Service (HEMS) charities, bringing the equivalent of a hospital emergency department to patients at the scene, giving those with the most severe injuries and medical conditions the very best chance of survival when minutes matter. LNAA crews are on call 24 hours of the day, 365 days of the year. The highly skilled doctors, paramedics and pilots help people across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, involved in life-threatening incidents every single day. LNAA receives no regular direct funding from the Government. It needs to raise £8 million this year to deliver its life-saving service every hour of the day. It is thanks to the generosity and goodwill of supporters throughout the area that they can provide such a critical care service. Air Ambulance Taster Day
Junior doctors swap hospitals for helicopter in

Look after yourself this summer.

As we head into summer be ‘tick aware’ as they enjoy the great outdoors.

Ticks can carry infections and while Lyme disease is more common in the UK, their have recently confirmed a case of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in England.

Where are ticks found?

Ticks live in many different outdoor environments but they are particularly common in grassy and wooded areas. You are therefore more at risk of being bitten if you take part in activities such as hiking, cycling or camping, but they can also sometimes be found in urban gardens.

How to avoid tick borne infections

While walking in green spaces, consider wearing clothing that covers your skin to make it more difficult for ticks to access a suitable place to bite. Use insect repellent such as DEET and consider wearing light coloured clothing so that you can easily spot ticks and brush them off. After spending time outside, check yourself, your clothing, your pets and others for ticks. Remove any attached tick as soon as you find it using a tick-removal tool or fine-tipped tweezers.

What is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is an infection transmitted by some tick species. The disease can be acquired when bitten by an infected tick, particularly when spending time outdoors in green spaces. Although Lyme disease should not deter you from enjoying the outdoors, you can reduce your chance of infection by following the precautions above.

What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?

Symptoms include a spreading circular red rash, which may appear as a bulls-eye rash like the image below, as well as non-specific flu-like symptoms. Although a lot of people associate the disease with the rash, 1/3 of people don’t report seeing one. Other signs to look out for include muscle or nerve pains or a drooping facial appearance when the nerves to the muscles around the upper part of the face are affected.

Where can you catch it?

People are most likely to encounter ticks when doing activities in the countryside or other green spaces such as woodland, some urban parks or gardens.

Ticks are most active in the spring and summer months when the weather warms up but can be found all year round. There are estimated to be around 3000 cases of Lyme disease diagnosed in England each year.

56 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

What is the prognosis?

In the UK, Lyme disease is an uncommon infection and can be successfully treated with a full course of antibiotics. This is the case for most people who contract Lyme disease, but if left untreated, the infection can spread to the nervous system and other areas of the skin, joints or rarely to the heart. If the nervous system or heart is affected, then injected antibiotics may be offered. Looking out for symptoms of Lyme disease, and checking yourself for ticks after you go to green spaces where they may be present is very important. Prompt tick removal can reduce your chances of acquiring Lyme disease. Rapidly recognising symptoms can ensure that if you are developing the disease you can receive the earliest diagnosis and treatment from your GP. If you are bitten by an infected tick your symptoms will typically develop 1-4 weeks after being bitten, however, they can appear anytime between 3 to30 days after exposure.

What to do if you have symptoms of Lyme disease.

If you have developed symptoms after being bitten by a tick or spending time outdoors, immediately contact your GP or call NHS 111, mentioning where you have been and if you remember being bitten.A very small number of people treated for early Lyme disease can develop more severe symptoms months or years later, however, this is usually if the treatment they receive is delayed or not completed. If you are exposed to Lyme disease, it’s recommended that you speak to your doctor if symptoms return or don’t improve.

*Animals must be protected and treated from ticks and bites, contact your local Veterinary for further advice and information.

Iron Giant’ celebrated in new exhibition.

A new exhibition will give a fascinating insight into Bennerley Viaduct, one of the most iconic structures in Nottinghamshire, when it opens in June at the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum.‘Bennerley Viaduct, the Iron Giant of the Erewash Valley’ is a pop up exhibition from the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct and charts its incredible history, from the Victorian railway boom, through dereliction, to walking and cycling destination. Learn more about the people and society that created it and the lasting impact it has on the communities Lawrence would have known well. Alongside the exhibition, there will be a programme of workshops and guided walks, bringing together Lawrence, creative writing, and visits to the viaduct as it is today.

Bennerley Viaduct - Rebecca Morris-Buck, Project Manager for the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct said: "We are so thrilled that our support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund is enabling us to work in partnership with the D. H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum for this exhibition. Bennerley Viaduct is a landmark in Lawrence Country: when you stand on the viaduct, you have a clear view of Eastwood in its landscape. As we develop our site as a visitor attraction, and walking and cycling destination, we're delighted to celebrate its connections to a world-famous writer, and to reflect on what life in the local area was like when the viaduct was in use. We hope Lawrence would've approved of our planned walks and creative writing activities."

Carolyn Melbourne, Museum and Collections Officer at the museum said:

“Bennerley Viaduct is a monument of Victorian engineering and this exhibition really brings to life the times in which Lawrence was living. Improvement works at the site are one of a number of projects being undertaken as part of Kimberley’s successful £16.5m levelling up bid so it’s also a great time to learn more about the history of this iconic landmark as we look ahead to its future.”

Tips from Martin Lewis - Money Saving Expert. -

Find the cheapest supermarket for your groceries.

There is a handy free comparison tool app out now called Trolley. This lets you compare the cost of items at the major supermarkets. You can also set alerts for when the price of your favourite items drop. It looks at the big supermarkets, Tesco, Boots, Asda, Waitrose, Ocado, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Iceland, Co-op, and Wilko.

The prices it shows are online prices, but these are often reflected in stores, so even if you're going in person, it's worth checking to see which is cheapest for you.

Just search for a product to see the price of it at different stores. You can set price alerts – just register (it's free), go to a product page and select 'Add to lists'.

There's also an app for Android and Apple phones so you can compare the data to in-store prices as you shop.

Money saving expert is sponsoring Trolley for one year and its run by volunteers.

Use free supermarket loyalty schemes to unlock discounts of up to 50% off

Sign up with a free loyalty scheme if you regularly shop at a particular supermarket that offers this service.

Schemes such as Tesco’s Clubcard and Sainsbury’s Nectar will give points when you shop that you can convert into money off your shopping or rewards with selected partners. Yet you can also use these schemes to unlock special discounts on a selection of products each week, which could save you £100s on your groceries over a year. Morrisons gives money-off vouchers on items you regularly buy. It occasionally also offers a discount off your entire shop, for example £5 off £40.

Check the My Morrisons app (for Android and iPhone) for your offers, and press ‘Activate’ on any you want to use. The discount will be applied automatically when you swipe your card at the till.

Lidl shoppers get up to 30% off selected products via the free Lidl Plus app. Go to the ‘Coupons’ section and you’ll find four or more digital coupons for selected products or ranges –If you don’t have it already, you can download and sign up to the Lidl Plus app for free at the App Store or Google Play.

East Midlands hospice invites you to explore virtual tour of buildings and grounds

Leading adult hospice, Treetops, is the first hospice in the East Midlands to welcome people to explore inside its buildings and grounds with a new interactive virtual tour. Treetops Hospice, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, is wants to showcase the warm and welcoming environment people will experience when visiting the hospice and dispel some common myths about hospices. The 360-degree virtual tour takes you into all areas of the hospice, based in Risley, Derbyshire. The tour includes the drop-in Wellbeing Café, children’s counselling rooms and contemplation courtyard, as well as the assisted bathroom and training areas. Touchpoints located around the tour provide more information on the hospice care available. Treetops Hospice provides nursing care and support for adults with life-limiting conditions, and their loved ones. The hospice also offers counselling for children and adults who are struggling after a bereavement. Julie Heath, Treetops Hospice chief executive, is excited for people to take a look: It’s wonderful to launch this new virtual tour during our 40th birthday year. Since the hospice opened, we’ve cared for thousands of local people and their families at the most difficult time of their lives.“There are a lot of myths about hospices being dark and depressing places where people come to die. This just isn’t the case, and now people can see for themselves what wonderful facilities we have here. The virtual tour can give people a lot of reassurance,” Julie continues. “For example, parents with children who need bereavement support, can show them inside our child-friendly counselling rooms.
