NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Summer has finally arrived, and I hope you’re all enjoying the weather. As the Summer school break is nearly here, there are lots of activities planned to stop the “I’m bored” syndrome. Of course the new £255,000 play area is now open in Wollaton Park, this is situated near the main entrance ,which is opposite the lower car park. Equipment includes climbing frames, a five metre long slide, swings, a large roundabout, zip wire, see-saw and natural play objects including earth mounds, logs and tree stumps. Grapevine Gardening Tips July This is often one of the hottest months of the year and a great time to sit out and enjoy your garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly dead-heading, and you’ll enjoy a longer display of blooms. Make sure you keep new plants well watered, using grey water where possible, and hoe off weeds, which thrive in the sunshine.

Jobs for Late July - Early August Autumn-flowering bulbs, such as autumn crocuses, Colchicum, Sternbergia, Amaryllis and Nerine, can be planted now. Some seeds are best planted just after collection, and others may need specific climatic conditions to break dormancy (e.g. some Alpines). If unsure, then sow seeds in ‘batches’, i.e. one immediately after collecting, one in winter, and one in the following spring. Cutting back, pruning and dividing Cutting back plants in baskets followed by feeding can encourage new growth and help revive tired displays. Cut back delphiniums and geraniums after the first flush of flowers to encourage a second flowering period. Feed after cutting them back. Deadhead flower borders regularly to prolong flowering. Disbud and dead-head dahlias if growing for large blooms. Leave roses that produce attractive hips. Divide clumps of bearded iris. Plants with a carpet-like growth habit, e.g. some Alpines, can become patchy, with central areas dying off. These patches can be in-filled with gritty compost, to encourage re-growth.

TRAVEL St-Malo in a snapshot Whereas most port towns are rough-and-ready places of industry, stepping off the ferry in St-Malo immediately plants you in a wonderfully historic and remarkably well-preserved place that deserves a trip in its own right. Hence the reason why we decided to book for le petit voyage from Portsmouth. Realistically most people come for one of two things, or both: the stunning Brittany countryside and coast beyond St-Malo itself, and/or the contents of the town's ancient citadelle , or walled old town. A real marvel, although the original ramparts were destroyed during World War II bombing campaigns, parts can be dated back to the 12th Century, creating an age-spanning periphery that gives some idea as to what life has been like here for generations, with work originally completed some 300 years ago, before further expansions took place in the eras that followed. This military monolith provides some wonderful walking routes, with views out to sea and over the beautiful town centre, not to mention a good opportunity for new visitors to get their bearings. Meanwhile, descending down into the cobbled streets reveals at least a day's worth of exploration 18
and window shopping. Antiques, books and crafts are all in abundance, and when a respite is needed, you won't be stuck for places to get a drink - whether that's a coffee or something a little stronger. Notable for more than the exhibitions, the House of Poets and Writers on Rue du Pelicot is well worth a look whilst in the area. Only a few wood-fronted buildings remain in St-Malo's citadelle , and this one dates back to 1676. Inside you'll find all manner of literary activities, many of which are open to the public, including walks, poetry translations and other workshops, providing an interesting insight into the regional and national written tradition that should appeal to any foreign fan of storytelling.

According to rumour, the town centre is home to one of the highest concentrations of restaurants in Europe, so take your pick depending on what gets the tastebuds flowing (seafood being a notable speciality).
Amazingly, construction began on Saint-Malo Roman Catholic Cathedral, or the Cathedral of Saint-Vincent de Saint-Malo, some 900 years ago, and although the spire was added in the 19th Century, the sense of the place standing here for nighon eternity is tangible, and it also www.freefeatures.com. demands a look for the stunning details inside and out, along with the showpiece rose window. You’ll find Musee du Chateau close by too, housed in the Chateau de St-Malo, originally built by the Dukes of Brittany, it’s a great way to learn about the city’s history and take in a real-life castle. Some amazing facts -WW1
with chloride of lime to purify it. About 6,000 men were killed on daily basis during WWI. This amounted to over 9 million deaths throughout the war. An amazing number of 65 million men coming from 30 various countries fought in WWI.
A soldier’s average life expectancy while in the trenches was six weeks. Some of the people who were mostly at risk of early death were the junior officers and the stretcher bearers. In the four years of WWI, 25 million tons of supplies were sent to the British forces serving on the Western Front – three million tons of food and five million tons of hay and oats for the horses. As the war progressed, food rations for the soldiers were significantly reduced to keep up with the supply-man ratio. There usual meal while in the trenches was maconochie - so named after the company that made this thin soup of turnips, potatoes and carrots. Other food servings included bully beef and Marmite. There was also a small ration for rum and tea, but soldiers found the latter with terrible taste since water at that time was treated 22
Over 25 million miles of trenches were dug and zigzagged through the Western Front alone. A number of these trenches were nicknamed Bond Street or Death Valley while the German lines were dubbed as Pilsen Trench, so on. In 1917, George V was forced to change the royal family’s name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor due to growing anti-German sentiment within Britain. A number of British road names were changed, too. Some of the well-known people who served during WWI were authors AA Milne, the creator of Winnie the Pooh; JRR Tolkien of the popular Lord of the Rings Trilogy; sculptor Henry Moore and the British actor Basil Rathbone.

Grapevine Tips Summer is here and so are flies! Here are some simple home remedies to keep flies out: Camphor is a great deterrent for flies. Just place a piece of it in bowls and keep in the four corners of the room. Iyou have too many flies, you could light the Camphor and spread the fumes throughout the room. Basil is a common plant in may households. Apart from all its medicinal properties, it is also a good deterrent for flies. Planting Basil at home can help in reducing the numer of flies. If you want to invest in something low cost yet effective, a fly swat is the way to go. Natural oils like lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil and lemon grass oil, are another way to keep flies at bay. Soak a piece of cloth or sponge in the oil and store it in an airtight conatiner. Keep the container open in the room that you want fly free. After use replace the lid and store. Book Review by Clare Lyons The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger There are lots of wonderful books out there, but it is only a special story that can be re-read many times, most people have a firm favourite they like to revisit from time to time and I would encourage adding the Time Travellers Wife to your list. Although I’m not a fan of Niffenegger generally, there is something so unique and magical about the tale of Henry and Clare and their battle for a life together that even when you know the ending, you can read it again and find more to enjoy. The couple first meet when Clare is just six, and Henry much older – but Henry has a rare condition that means he unexpectedly travels in time. There are other books looking at time travel in which exciting adventures occur, or dramatic changes to our future but this is a surprisingly subtle story really only concentrating on the impact on the main protagonists. It is in parts heart-breaking, and in others quite funny, but worth a look or a re-visit over the Summer?There is a reasonable film adaption with the same title, but it’s no replacement for the depth of the book. If you enjoy a bit of time travel you might also enjoy Making History by Stephen Fry. Children’s Choice Big Bad Owl by Steve Smallman & Richard Watson It’s unusual to find a childrens book with an unlikable main character, but the Big Bad Owl is extremely grumpy to everyone, and generally not that nice. What’s good about the book is that we all have off days and it’s a great way to allow children to think about how we behave to others when we are in bad moods, and also to acknowledge that being in a bad mood sometimes is ok. The characters in the book learn to identify signs that Owl is in a bad mood, and to allow him to be on his own if he wants and to have ‘space’ – something we often don’t allow children to do. IN THE COMMUNITY Trent to Trenches - exhibition at Nottingham Castle The People of Nottinghamshire and the Great War, 1914-1918 A major exhibition to mark one hundred years since the outbreak of the Great War exploring the experiences of the people of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire at home and in the trenches. Trent to Trenches shell filling The exhibition will be held at Nottingham Castle from 26th July to 16th November 2014. Using powerful visual images, diaries, letters and artefacts, many on loan from members of the public, the exhibition highlights how the conflict of the Great War (1914-1918) was a catalyst for huge social and economic change in the communities of Nottinghamshire. Much of the research for the exhibition has been carried out by ten volunteer groups from across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire which has generated content for this exciting and innovative exhibition.

In WW11 they were silent until they could ring to announce peace. Curried Chicken & Mango salad Cooking time Prep:20 mins Cook:20 min Easy Serves 2 This lightly-spiced, fruity salad is a modern take on Coronation chicken - a low calorie-lunch for two 6 chicken mini fillets 1 tsp olive oil 2 tsp curry powder 4 tbsp Greek yogurt 2 tbsp mango chutney zest ½ lime and 2 tsp juice 1 Little Gem lettuce, leaves separated 1 ripe mango, peeled and sliced ½ red onion, finely sliced 2 tsp toasted sesame seeds
Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Toss the chicken in the oil and 1 tsp of the curry powder, season and mix well to coat. Put the chicken on a foil-lined baking tray and bake for 20 mins until cooked through. Leave to cool a little, then slice. Meanwhile, make the dressing. In a bowl, combine the remaining curry powder with the yogurt, chutney and lime zest and juice (add 1 tbsp water if the dressing is a little thick). To serve, arrange the lettuce leaves on 2 plates. Top with the mango and cooked chicken, then drizzle with the dressing. Scatter with the red onion and sesame seeds before serving.
