EDITOR’S NOTE This is the time I have been dreading, updating to a new computer and every headache that goes with it Hats off to all IT technicians and computer specialists, ~ nightmare ! All finished now .. fingers crossed. I’m hoping to bring some more interesting features & competitions over the next few months. Some people are looking forward to the late summer music festivals and concerts, I’ll try and keep you all up to date. I know some have been postponed (not cancelled) to later in the year. On a positive note, local businesses will soon be opening so I urge you all to support your local shops, trades people, and of course our advertisers. Speaking to some of our advertisers recently, they all seem to have been keeping as busy as they can, thanks to the local people and the Grapevine readers. Welcome to our new gardening feature Hello Gardeners… It‛s Gardener Steve here! and I‛m bringing you gardening tips, news and events. Hello Gardeners… I do hope you are all having a lovely summer?, as I sit here and write we are experiencing a heatwave and in our gardens in water water water!, it’s kept me busy watering as have a lot of plants in pots, but it’s a job I love and I do them either first thing in the morning or in the evening, I find it a very relaxing job, it gives me time to take stock of my plants, and even talk to a few! How you been getting on in your gardens this summer I would love to know. Again this year I have had time in my own garden as some gardening events are still not taking place this year. I’m usually busy jetting off to Chelsea Flower Show in May but this year the show takes place in September so I will be able to tell you all about once I have visited. Here are some jobs for you to do in your garden this month… Happy Gardening Everybody! • • • • • • • • •

8

Pick runner beans regularly to prevent them becoming stringy and to make room for developing beans. Keep on top of weeds as they compete with plants for nutrients and water. Stake tall or top heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid high potash fertiliser every fortnight. Trim your lavender plants after they’ve finished flowering to keep them compact. Continue to feed tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and remove leaves lower down on the plant to help with air circulation and prevent disease. Dead-heading is an important job this month - bedding plants, perennials and roses to stop them self-seeding, encourage further flowering and improves appearance of plant. Apply a high-potash fertiliser such as tomato food once fruits start to form on peppers, cucumber and aubergines. Pinch out the top of tomato plants to concentrate the growth into the fruit that has already formed. Aim to leave 5 or 6 trusses of fruit per plant.

Gardener Steve‛s Plant of the Month

RUDBECKIA FULGIDA VAR. SULLIVANTII ‘GOLDSTRUM’ (Coneflower) Rudbeckia can be annuals, biennials or herbaceous perennials, with simple or pinnately divided leaves and large daisy-like flower-heads with yellow or orange rays surrounding a prominent conical disk. It is a plant genus in the sunflower family. The species are commonly called coneflowers and are native to North America and many species are cultivated in gardens for their showy yellow or gold flower heads. ‘Goldsturm’ is an herbaceous perennial forming a clump to 60cm in height, with erect stems bearing narrowly ovate leaves and dark-eyed, deep yellow flowers to 12cm across. This award winning coneflower is mostly used in flower borders and beds, as cut flowers, cottage garden, and informal garden prairie planting. Flowering period: August to October Height and Spread: 60cm x 60cm (2ft x 2ft) Soil: Any soil but well drained Hardiness: Hardy Propagation: Propagate by division in spring or autumn Pruning: Deadhead faded flowers Pest and Diseases: Generally pest free

GRAPEVINE COMPETITION WIN 2 TICKETS TO SEE

THE CHRISTIANS

Friday 24th September 2021 Devils Arse’s Peak Cavern - Castleton!

Renowned for an endless string of soulful yet socially aware hits ...Forgotten Town, Ideal World, Born Again, Harvest for the World, Whats in a Word, Hooverville, Words, Father, The Bottle and many more The Christians enjoyed huge acclaim in the late 80s and early 90s both in the UK and Europe and often confused people with their band name (in fact just the brothers surname with absolutely no religious connotation!) Still headed by enigmatic lead singer Garry Christian (who very much deserves the Daily Mirror’s description of him as having ‘one of the finest voices in pop) who has only gained in vocal stature (and wit) over the years! the band are enjoying a revival currently touring successfully in the UK and Europe. Currently embarking on a huge UK Tour playing their well known back catalogue and one or two favourites selected from newer albums. Catch them on tour and find out why Chris Evans said 'it was the best gig I've ever been to'. Businesses encouraged to sign up for the Incredible Edible Trail.

Businesses in Beeston are being asked to show their support which aims to create an Edible Trail, around the Town centre. The project has already secured some sites including: Cator Lane Park Sandby Court(just past The Valley GP Surgery on Bramcote Lane Leyton Crescent in Beeston Rylands and The City It is hoped businesses in the town would add to these existing points on the trail. Why an Edible Trail? The idea behind the Edible Trail is to grow edible plants in communal spaces for the public to enjoy, free! Anyone is welcome to take the food. The trail would look to increase custom for local businesses and help get the conversation going about the environment at the same time. The history of Edible Trails? The Beeston project follows on from the sucess of the project in Todmorden. The founder, Pam Warhurst began the project in Todmorden 13 years ago and gave a TED talk entitled “How We Can Eat Our Landscapes”. How to get involved. Businesses could place a planter or grow anything edible outside their premises with an “Incredible Edible” sign visible in order to create a similar trial in Beeston. It doesn’t need to be complicated and you can make it as low maintenance as you like, it could be a perinnial plant like blueberry plants or strawberry plants, which will keep producing each year or you could opt for annuals . Herbs are a really good option and if you own a cafe or restaurant, it’s something you could use regularly. For more information. If you would like to talk to the organisers to gain a better understanding of what they have in mind, including how to grow edible plants safely, please contact Heather via: incrediblebeeston@gmail.com or 07751 217 840.

A message from Councillor John McGrath. Hi all, Just a line to thank all those that voted for me as your County Councillor for Broxtowe Central, this area is: Awsworth, Bramcote to Sherwin island, Cossall, Trowell and Stapleford. I am overwhelmed that you all voted for me. I have always said just ring me on 07905576353 and I will try my best to point you in the right direction. I am also your local postman, stop and have a chat but don't tell Eddy. I recently took Dave Walker of Highways around the area, and pointed out many things to him. The speed along certain roads, signs and road markings around schools and POTHOLES. The County Council are looking at the working practises around potholes. He will keep me updated on project works, which I have asked Stapleford Town Council to put on their website. I will also be asking about bus services, local footpath improvements as many more people are enjoying this area. It was great to see the government give our town £21.5 million. Thank you. Hickings Lane hub, employment, town centre, cycle routes and youth services all part of the improvement spend. It has been a long time coming and will give our generations a future. The Thursday Market is doing well, once the confidence is back I think we will go forward, but I do think it will be a year or two at the most, so this is where the government must help small businesses not the big boys. I feel many small towns like ours will die, we have the money so lets get the bright young people involved. Yours, Councillor John McGrath (Maggie)

Need some help to cope right now? Need some help to cope? Adult or child in a mental health crisis? Call 0808 196 3779 24/7 Lots of us are feeling stressed, lonely, upset or sad right now. To get help with your mental health, call Turning Point on 0300 555 0730 (9am-11pm every day). Worried about a child? There is help available for young people with emotional, behavioural or mental health difficulties. Support can help with depression, problems with food, self-harm, abuse, violence or anger, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety, among other things.

Supporting people you know who are struggling. Around one in four of us have issues coping every year. To help friends and family who are feeling like this, here are some tips: • Offer to listen without trying to solve their problems. • Reassure them that you’re there for them. • Don’t treat them any differently – but don’t be afraid to check in on them more often to see how they’re feeling. Express concern and say you can help Letting someone know you’re worried is a good way to open up a conversation – it shows you care about the person, have time for them and that they do not have to avoid things with you. Be patient You will not always know the full story. There may be reasons why they have found it difficult to ask for help. Just being there can be helpful for someone who may want to open up later.

Get in touch on 0115 8542 299 or do an online form to get help for your child. www.nottinghamshirehealthcare.nhs.uk/ CAMHS-self-referral

Do not force it Do not force someone to talk to you or get help, and do not go to a doctor on their behalf. This may lead to them feeling uncomfortable, with less power and less able to speak for themselves. Offer practical help Little acts of kindness – like offering to do the shopping or to go to professional appointments with them – can help. Find out what works for them.

Act as you usually do together Do what you usually do – behaving differently can make someone feel more isolated. Do not be afraid to offer kind words and a space to talk, whether by phone, messaging or in person. Offer your time to listen. Listening is an important skill. Ask open questions that start with “how”, “what”, “where” or “when”. This can help people open up. If you’re worried someone is suicidal, it’s okay to ask them directly. Research shows that this helps - because it gives them permission to tell you how they feel, and shows that they are not a burden. If you think someone is in immediate danger, the quickest way to get help is to call an ambulance on 999.

Looking after yourself Supporting someone who is struggling can be distressing. It’s important for you to make sure you’re okay too. It’s okay to decide that you are no longer able to help someone and to let them know you won’t be contactable for a while. If supporting someone is affecting you, the Samaritans are there to listen and help. No pressure, no judgement. Whatever you’re going through, call them free any time, from any phone, on 116 123, this number is free, day or night 365 days a year, or you can email jo@samaritans.org. When you call Samaritans, your number is not displayed to the volunteer. The phones they use don’t have caller display information on them. The number also won’t come up on your phone bill. If you’ve emailed the Samaritans, your email address will not be shown to the volunteer. However, an email can take up to 24 hours to respond. Remember there is help out there.

Treetops Ram brings hope to city’s visitors at Derby Ram Trail. THE artist behind the design for the Treetops Ram at this summer’s Derby Ram Trail says she feels privileged that her artwork is “sparking conversations about bereavement and hope” among visitors. Duffield-based artist Lynne Hollingsworth, named the hospice’s Ram ‘Memories Fade but Warmth Remains’, decorating it with flowers and butterflies, which she says symbolises renewal and the life cycle. According to Lynne, the Treetops Ram, which is located outside Derby Bus Station, has received an overwhelming response, having already been visited by hundreds of people. “The Treetops Ram is more than just a painted sculpture. My design has strong motifs and messages surrounding bereavement and hope, and people seem to really get it,” says Lynne, who is also managing damage control for the project, so has been visiting the Rams regularly. She added: “It’s getting the results I wanted. The Ram is helping visitors to open up and have the conversations that they would usually find difficult. The final Ram is exactly what I hoped for, and more. I feel privileged to be part of the trail, as well as the poignant conversations I’m having with visitors. It’s actually quite emotional.” She says she hopes the Ram will bridge the gap between the community and Treetops, as well as provide comfort to those who have received care from Treetops.

38

“Treetops has touched a lot of people. I was delighted and honoured to have my design chosen by them; I could not have wished for a better match,” Lynne says.

Speaking about the Ram, Acting Chief Executive at Treetops, Phil Shreeve, says she is extremely pleased with the response the Ram has received so far. “We couldn’t have asked for a better location, being right outside Derby Bus Station, for visitors to and from the city to immediately enjoy,” she says. “The design is everything we imagined when we chose to work with Lynne, and we are beyond happy with the final result. “We feel that our Ram really represents so much of what Treetops stands for. I hope that visitors really do benefit from its fantastic design and helps them to talk more openly about bereavement, while giving them hope, something that we all need, especially following the past 18 months.”The Treetops Ram is one of 30 uniquely painted larger-than-life sculptures that can be located across Derby city centre.Hosted by Derby Museums and in partnership with Wild in Art, the Derby Ram Trail can be visited up until 22 August.

Plotholders and Puppies. A beautiful dog, in his working vest, attracted Stapleford residents to a wellstocked stall selling vegetables and plants on Saturday 31st July, as part of the “Sustainable Stapleford” event organised by Nottinghamshire’s Stapleford Town Council. Created and run by an enthusiastic team of volunteers from Stapleford & District Garden Holders, with generous donations from several plotholders, sales raised £135.02, and with direct donations of £116.98, a total of £252.00 was raised towards Emily Cook’s aim to raise the £29,000 needed to train a Medical Detection Dog.

education. Shortly afterwards her very new companion, a 6 month old Hungarian Viszla puppy called Barna Kutya, spontaneously raised an alarm a few minutes before she collapsed. He continued to do this so reliably that the family contacted the charity Medical Detection Dogs whose sustained training means that Barna is now a fully qualified Assistance Dog, behaving impeccably while ‘on duty’ but always alert to Emily’s situation. Fellow plotholders were delighted to be able to contribute to Emily’s own fundraising efforts, and the SDGHA’s contribution of £135.02 has been donated to www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ onemissiononelifesavingnose.

Emily, who hoped to graduate in medicine, took on a Stapleford allotment plot when a complex neurological condition causing sudden loss of consciousness and subsequent gradual recovery from paralysis prevented her from continuing her promising

How To Reduce Unwanted Mail & Telephone Calls Reducing the amount of unwanted text messages. Apart from being being careful with your personal details, there is no miracle cures to stop unwanted text messages, however, modern technology means that computer programmes can generate phone numbers at random, and will keep guessing until it finds an active number. One option is to send the message to your service provider. To report a marketing text send it to: • EE, O2, Orange, T-mobile, Virgin Mobile, Tesco, giffgaff, Vodafone - text to: 7726 • Three text to: 37726 It is important that you include the sender’s number when you forward the message. You may get an automated response thanking you for the report and providing further instructions. Read the Small Print When Buying Goods / Using Websites When giving your contact details to a company, especially when using the internet, ensure you read the information about how they are going to use your contact details. You may be given the option to tick or un-tick a box which will allow the company to send you marketing information. You may also be asked whether you give your permission to pass on yourcontact details to other organisations. To reduce the amount of unwanted mail or calls, trading standards would always suggest that

52

permission is not given. Many websites make the requirement to include a phone number compulsory when you complete their online form. If you do not want the company to call you, True Call have set up a number thatyou can enter - 0333 88 88 88. Any company that calls this number will hear: trueCall38 is handling my calls. I prefer not to be contacted by phone, so please contact me via my email address. However, residents can choose to opt out of the Open Register (also called Edited Register), which is a second copy of the list. The names and address on the Open Register can be sold to any person, organisation or company and used for any number of purposes, including direct marketing. Scam alert Trading Standards Team has received reports of a scam in the form of a call from someone falsely claiming to be from a health service. During the call, scammers ask people if they have had a health problem and then go on to ask for their address and when their family visit them. They then say that they will get a colleague to go out and see them at their address. Unfortunately it's not always easy to spot a scam, but if you think you've received a suspicious phone call, you should: Hang up Call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 2231133 to report the call and get advice. Scams can fall in to some broad categories and here are some examples: Doorstep: People call at your door telling you that a roof tile is loose, your driveway needs repairing, they can cut trees down cheaply, try to sell you a mattress or some fish etc. Find out more about doorstep callers. Telephone: Phone calls telling you that you need to pay an urgent bill and requesting your bank details, companies offering services to reduce you unwanted phone calls. Online: ‘Copycat’ websites selling services that are either free or cheaper via the official Government route. Post: Letters informing you that you have won a prize, psychics telling you they can predict harm is coming your way and for a fee they can protect you, catalogues promises you a prize if you place another order quickly.

Reducing Unwanted Mail & Telephone Calls Advice on how to reduce the number of unwanted letters andtelephone calls. 1) Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and Mailing Preference Service (MPS) These services are for anyone who wants to be removed from most mailing and telephone sales lists in the UK. New Craft, Gifts and Food fair launched in Beeston

- A new craft, gift and food fair was launched in Beeston on Saturday 3rd July, to encourage shoppers back into the town centre as lockdown restrictions began to lift. The market will be open on the first Saturday of every month between 10.00am – 4.00pm in Beeston Square. Visitors will find a range of quality products from traders including jewellery, hand painted paintings, handmade bath and beauty products, sweets and wooden dolls. The opening of Beeston’s new craft, gift and food fair will hopefully encourage local residents to visit their local town centre during the weekend, as well as encouraging residents to shop local and support other small businesses.Broxtowe Borough Council’s Market Officer, Clair Story Said: “It’s important to shop local and support the high street. Markets are a great addition and help attract visitors to the town centre where they will go onto visit our great local shops, restaurants, cafes and other great businesses. We all work well together.” “Market traders are small independent businesses who spend their time doing something they love, putting their heart and soul into it, so it’s extremely important we do our best to support them.” Across the Borough the Council runs Stapleford market every Thursday 8.00am – 2.00pm at Walter Parker Memorial Square and the Beeston market which takes place every Monday and Wednesday 8.00am – 3.00pm at Beeston Square.

Women will be empowered to work again following charity grant success Women who’ve experienced Domestic Abuse in Broxtowe will access support, training and opportunities that prepare them to get back to work thanks to recent grant success. Broxtowe Women’s Project (BWP) who provide a range of support services to women affected by domestic abuse, has been successful in its bid for an ESF Community Grant. BWP have been awarded this grant specifically to help the women they support to increase their confidence and self-esteem, and to identify and develop the talents and skills that can enhance their employability skills through the ‘Within Reach’ project. Colette Byrne, BWP’s Chief Executive, said: “Often, women in abusive relationships become separated from their friends, family, and work by partners who seek to control every aspect of their lives; inhibiting employment and education, and ensuring that they become financially dependent on them. Many women we support haven’t worked during or as a result of their abuse. They have reduced self-belief and lack the confidence to take steps towards re-joining the labour market. Through the ‘Within Reach’ programme we’re looking forward to supporting women to gain confidence, increasing their self-esteem and self-worth through bespoke sessions that lead towards voluntary, employment, or entrepreneurial opportunities. Every step a survivor of Domestic Abuse takes towards work, is one step closer to the sustainable economic and personal independence they deserve.” This funding is for women who are

Domestic Abuse survivors and are unemployed or economically inactive across Broxtowe. If you wish to access this support, you do not have to have accessed BWP’s services to be eligible. You just have to have the right to live and work in the UK, and be a survivor of Domestic Abuse. BWP are asking anyone interested in accessing their help to get in touch on 01773 718 555. Or visit www. broxtowewomensproject.org.uk/reach ESF Community Grants is funded by the European Social Fund, commissioned by the Education and Skills Funding Agency, and is managed by Futures. Broxtowe Women’s Project (BWP) www.broxtowewomensproject.org.uk is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity (Charity number: 1125946). It was set up in January 2001 to provide an information and support service for women and their children living in the Borough of Broxtowe who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse. It provides a confidential helpline, outreach service, training courses and drop-in sessions, and a variety of well-being programmes all aimed at empowering women and young people helping them survive domestic abuse. It does not provide refuge housing directly but works with those affected by domestic abuse – signposting them to additional housing support if necessary, empowering survivors, nurturing children and young people to build resilience and develop healthy relationships, and preventing domestic abuse through awareness raising, training and campaigning. BWP can support businesses by helping to produce a Domestic Abuse Policy and the related procedures, advising on implementing the Policy, providing awareness sessions to support those affected by domestic abuse, and providing resources for employees.

The two famous lions at the front of the Council House in the Market Square in Nottingham are officially named after two brothers, kings of Greek mythology, Agamemnon on the left, the right lion is called Menelaus. Nottingham began in the 6th century as a small settlement called Snotta inga ham. It was under the direct rule of the Snotingas , an Anglo-Saxon tribe. In the late 9th century the Danes conquered North East and Eastern England. They turned Nottingham into a fortified settlement or burgh, the community became one of the five towns of the Danelaw. The hour bell in the Council House, Market Square , Nottingham was nicknamed "Little John" since the building opened. The bell was cast by the world-famous bell founders John Taylor & Co of Loughborough in 1927. The bell is the 5th heaviest in the UK and the E-flat tone has the deepest tone in the country. Ibuprofen was discovered in Nottingham by Dr Stewart Adams- as was Tarmac (Nottingham’s Radcliffe Road was the world’s first Tarmac road). The traffic light was invented by a Nottingham man John Peake Knight 1868. The first one was placed in Westminster London. His system had a revolving gaspowered lantern with a red and a green light. HP sauce was invented in Nottingham by David Hoe from Bottesford. The recipe was sold to a grocer named Frederick Garton in Nottingham who registered the name HP sauce in 1895. The MRI scanner was invented in Nottingham in 1977 by Sir Peter Mansfield. He was born in London in 1933 and moved to Nottingham to become a lecturer at the department of physics at the University of Nottingham in 1964. In 1968, Sir Peter was appointed senior lecturer and it was during this time he and his colleagues were credited with the invention of the MRI scanner. Nottingham was the first city to install braille signs in its shopping centres. Mahatma Gandhi visited Beeston in 1931. He was visiting his nephew JV Joshi, who was studying and lodging in Linden Grove Beeston Rylands, a blue plaque can be seen outside the house.

Barbara Buxton thanks hospice for ‘lifeline’ of virtual care and support throughout pandemic. An elderly widow from Alvaston who found herself isolated when the UK went into lockdown has thanked a Derbyshire-based charity for its support – which includes a weekly virtual café and exercise classes. Eighty-four-year-old Barbara Buxton spent 10 years caring for her husband, Ray after he was diagnosed with cancer and was given much-needed respite from end-of-life charity, Treetops Hospice. As well as helping to care for Ray in his final months, Treetops also introduced Barbara to their support group for carers - but when the UK went into lockdown, Barbara, who has respiratory disease COPD, was advised to shield and she lost contact with friends. Barbara, a former senior accounts officer with Derby City Council, is backing Treetops summer appeal for donations. Barbara said: “It has been so lonely over the past year. Ray and I had no children and although I have siblings, they’re elderly and live all over the place, so I’ve mostly been on my own. Up until COVID hit, I’d always been busy with the local church, doing arts and crafts and meeting friends. During the first lockdown last March, when everything shut down, friends would pick up the phone to see how I was. But that tailed off as the pandemic took hold. I lost contact with everyone and ended up indoors by myself all day. I wouldn’t speak to a single person from one week to the next and the sense of not knowing what would happen was very distressing. I worried who I would turn to for help. Because I’m unable to walk far due to my COPD, I started to feel depressed and quickly found myself isolated.” Barbara bought herself a laptop to stay connected and sought support from Treetops once again. Treetops had to close its doors to patients for the first time in its thirty year history, but quickly adapted and

moved all its support services online, as well as providing technical support and tablets for those who needed it.“During lockdown, it was such a relief to have the support of Treetops Hospice,” Barbara continued. “I was put in touch with David, one of the Treetops volunteer befrienders. He is a lovely man and phones me every week for a chat. He introduced me to the Virtual Wellbeing Café. “Six months ago, I didn’t know how to use Zoom and now I’m on it almost every day. I also attend a virtual patchwork making class, adapted Tai Chi sessions and I’ve recently joined in with an art class. The Wellbeing Café sets me up for the rest of the day and is a real tonic; it makes me realise I am not alone and there are other people in similar situations to me. I can socialise again and seeing their faces and chatting away has made a huge difference to my life.”

Barbara will continue to shield despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson lifting all restrictions. “Nothing changes for me. I can’t risk going out with my health. It’s been hard to say ‘no’ to friends who occasionally offer to take me out now, but I can’t risk catching anything. “The worst scenario would be getting Covid. If I became really ill, apart from calling 111, what would I do? I’m living by myself. There’s no one to get me a cup of tea or some paracetamol. There’s just me and only me. And I’m not alone in this situation; there are hundreds of people like me.“So, for me, Treetops is unique,” added Barbara. “It offers people like me a lifeline and life-changing opportunities that I just cannot get anywhere else. “I know that if I phone Treetops, I will speak to someone who can reassure me, encourage me

to cosy down with a cup of tea for a while. If you’ve not spoken to anyone for two days, it is a huge comfort. “The support, the friendship and the kindness which Treetops Hospice gives me is second to none.” Donations to the Treetops Summer Appeal are welcomed and can be made online: https://www.treetops.org.uk/summer-appeal About Treetops Hospice Treetops Hospice, the leading end-of-life care charity in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, provides nursing care and emotional support for adults with life-limiting conditions, and their families. The charity provides support from diagnosis onwards for patients with conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart and respiratory conditions. Founded in 1983, Treetops supports thousands of local people – and their families – through the most difficult time of their lives. Our team of over 40 Hospice at Home nurses provided over 28,000 hours of care to terminally-ill patients last year, working day and night to give much-needed support. We have a team of bereavement counsellors who provide over 5,500 counselling sessions – over 1,000 of them to children and young people. Wellbeing team members provide valuable information and support to those who need it, while our experts in end-of life care and bereavement support dedicate many hours to training NHS staff about death and dying. Treetops are lucky to have over 500 amazing volunteers who help to keep the hospice running smoothly. It costs £4.2m each year to run the hospice. Therapeutic packs for bereaved children who are being supported at home during the pandemic cost £28. An overnight Hospice at Home nursing shift for a patient at the end of life costs £108.

New figures show most patients in hospital with Covid in England continue to be unvaccinated so it’s great to hear that our 16 and 17-year-olds can now get their vaccination. With cases high among young people in Nottingham, it is really important we encourage them to get their jab. Anyone aged 16 or 17 can walk in for their vaccination at selected sites without needing to book an appointment – city sites offering this service are Forest Recreation and Queen’s Medical Centre. Sherwood Forest Trust Plants Trees for the Future. The Sherwood Forest Trust, a local charity established over 25 years ago, is working with the ‘Miner2Major’ Landscape Partnership Scheme to plant 10 ‘Heritage Trees’ - celebrating the special place that trees play in the landscape and history of the Sherwood Forest area. On Saturday 24th July, the Trust was at Feel Good Gardens CIC, a community garden at Forestry Holdings next door to Sherwood Pines, hosting their third event as part of the Heritage Trees project. Members of Feel Good Gardens – who carry out gardening at the site for therapeutic and wellbeing purposes - helped to plant 6 espalier apple trees, as well as a memorial tree. Members and volunteers grow their own fruit and vegetables on site, which they then go on to use in group cooking sessions and shared meals. So as well as being good news for wildlife and birds, the planting of these apple trees will provide tasty benefits for the future. Amy Chandler, community ranger for Forestry England, attended the event and gave a talk to members about the work FE does within the area, focussing on the importance of trees for our climate, physical wellbeing and mental health. Gary Joynt from Major Oak Heritage Crafts gave members green woodworking demonstrations and led ‘have-a-go’ sessions.

66

Gary said,“I loved every minute and I was inspired by the great work going on at Feel Good Gardens and the lovely folks who attended. Hats off to the Sherwood Forest Trust for organising this event and raising awareness of how important trees are to our heritage, wildlife and local landscape.” The Sherwood Forest Trust hope that the event might become a joint annual event at Feel Good Gardens, working with members and the local community to emphasise the importance of trees and community co-operation for the future of Sherwood Forest.

The Sherwood Forest Trust is a registered charity based in Edwinstowe, and established 25 years, focussed on conserving, preserving and celebrating the nature and heritage of the former Royal Hunting Forest of Sherwood. www.sherwoodforesttrust.org.uk. Miner2Major is a five-year Landscape Partnership Scheme (2019-2023), supported by a £2,450,400 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. It focuses on the heart of the Sherwood Forest area from Nottingham to Ollerton, and Mansfield to Rufford Abbey, an area that has a distinctive landscape character, which is recognised and valued by local people, as well as visitors from around the world.Further information can be obtained via: Miner 2 Major | Miner2Major (nottinghamshire.gov.uk)
