Welcome to our gardening feature! Hello Gardeners... Welcome to your spring gardening, Hope you have all been enjoying the spring displays whether it's in your own gardens or local parks and green spaces it really is a lovely time of the year. Now is a really busy time in the garden with lots of sowing growing and hoeing yes that's right we must all look out for them pesky weeds which will be making an appearance, I am sure! I’m still as busy in my new garden which I have had for two years now, I had a rhubarb crown that was smothered in weeds and grass when I moved here and now it's doing great, I have just given it a good layer of mulch which they really like it as they are moisture loving and get thirsty so keep them well watered, and just think of them summer crumbles!! Please keep getting in touch and letting me know what you're up to in your gardens whether it’s a new garden or an established one I would love to hear from you. Contact details below. Here are some jobs to get on with in your garden! • • • • • • • • • • •

Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Lilies, Gladiolus and Crocosmia into borders or containers. Any forced flower bulbs such as hyacinths and daffodils, which have now finished flowering, can be planted outdoors in garden borders. Check any tree ties to make sure the tie is not cutting into the trunk. Loosen any that are tight to allow the trunk room to expand. Continue cutting back any dead foliage left on your perennials and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth. Continue planting potatoes and finish planting onion sets by mid-April. Repair any damage to lawns and grassed areas. Worn patches in the lawn can be repaired by sowing grass seed. Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds. Divide Hostas before they come into leaf. Apply a high nitrogen lawn fertiliser, mow the grass regular but keep the blades fairly high. Mulch your beds and borders with layer of well rotted manure or garden compost to prepare for the growing season. You can also work in a general purpose fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure. Lift and divide perennial plants now to improve their health and create new plants for your garden.

Gardener Steve’s Plant of the Month. Erysimum 'Bowle's Mauve’
(Perennial wallflower)
Erysimum is a genus of flowering plants in the botanical family Brassicaceae, that includes about 180 species, both popular garden plants and many wild forms. They can be annuals, biennials or woody-based perennials with narrow leaves and dense racemes flowers. Long-lasting and often sweetly scented, the Erysimum can brighten your garden, bridging the months from spring through to summer. 'Bowles's Mauve' is a bushy evergreen perennial, with narrow, dark grey-green leaves and erect racemes of rich mauve flowers 2cm in width. This wallflower blooms over a long season, sometimes all winter in warm coastal areas. Drought tolerant once established. Attractive to butterflies. Evergreen. This must be one of the best perennials available not only for its long flowering season but also for its attractive foliage and flowers. Flowering period: Spring onwards Height and Spread: 45cm x 50cm Position: Full sun Soil: Well drained, fertile Hardiness: Hardy perennial Propagation: Take semi-ripe cuttings May to July Pruning: Remove damaged foliage and deadhead after flowering Pest and Diseases: Prone to slugs, snails and flea beetles and downy mildew and club root Message from Blue Skies the Limit Events & Adventure It has now been a year since we last hit the road with Gardener Steve and his garden day trips due to Covid –19. Our last trip took us to Derbyshire where our first port of call was the Carsington Water plant fair, where local nurseries were in attendance selling a wide range of seasonal plants. It was then on to Matlock Bath where we had a few hours for lunch, and I think fish and chips were on the menu! The last stop of the day was at a garden called Cascades, also named the wellbeing garden where we were treated to lots of early spring delights such as hellebore, snowdrops, flowering bulbs and shrubs. Throughout the garden there were many streams, pools and waterfalls and there was no shortage of places to sit relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, owing to its name the wellbeing and meditation garden. A great day had by all. Over the past three years we have travelled miles from Surrey to North Yorkshire and visited gardens of all shapes and sizes and such variety like Westonbirt Arboretum, To advertise call 07854990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

Are you retired or semi retired? Come to Beeston u3a and: * Have fun * Learn new things * Develop new interests * Make new friends * 2nd June 2021 is the first NATIONAL u3a DAY, celebrating the UK wide movement of locally run interest groups, first established in 1982. Membership of u3a is open to everyone in their third age – this is not defined by a particular age, but by a period in life in which full time employment has ceased. Members explore new ideas, skills and activities together – they draw upon their knowledge and experience to teach and learn from each other. There are no qualifications involved – it is just for pleasure. And it is all voluntary, run by members for other members. There are more than 1000 groups nationally but it should come as no surprise to local people that the Beeston branch is extremely well supported, with 900+ members, a lively programme of monthly open meetings and more than 90 interest groups. Beeston u3a is looking forward to its 10th Anniversary, on 18th June 2021, which is being marked by a Virtual Afternoon Tea! More than half of the Beeston u3a groups have been active during the pandemic, mainly meeting online. Some resourceful members have recently used available technology to form new groups, and groups that usually meet outdoors are starting to make plans to meet in person again. All activities have the support of Group Facilitators, Group Co-ordinators and national advice from the Third Age Trust to ensure members stay well informed and safe. Monthly Open meetings are held at 10am for 10:30am on the first Thursday of every month, usually at The Methodist Church, Chilwell Road, but currently they are on Zoom. Member sare always welcome! £210,000 To Support Recovery Of Leisure Centres. Broxtowe Borough Council has received £210,000 to support recovery of its leisure centres, thanks to a Government scheme. The Government has announced that £100 million has now been allocated to 266 local authorities across England, to support the recovery of publicly-owned leisure centres and gyms. In Broxtowe, £210,000 has been receive to support recovery of the Council's LLeisure Leisure Centres. The National Leisure Recovery Fund, which opened in December 2020, was established to provide a solid funding platform for the leisure sector to successfully reopen. It has been funded by the Government and managed by Sport England.Allocations will mean that publicly-owned leisure centres and gyms can begin preparations for reopening as part of Step Two of the Prime Minister’s roadmap, secured by financial backing from the Government. The lifting of restrictions will be subject to approval. It follows the Prime Minister’s ambition to ‘building back fitter’ from the coronavirus pandemic, underlined by the multi-billion pound support for the sport and leisure sectors over the past year.As announced in the Prime Minister’s roadmap, leisure centres and gyms will be part of the Step Two reopening. They will be permitted to re-open their doors to the public no earlier than 12 April for individual socially distanced use, with this £100 million providing a significant capital injection to help with restarting. As part of Step Three, indoor adult group sports and exercise classes will be permitted to resume from no earlier than 17th May. New business hub opens in Stapleford Nine businesses can now benefit from office space in Stapleford’s new business hub, after Broxtowe Borough Council developed the old Police Station site. The site, which has been vacant for several years, has been refurbished into nine offices of varying sizes, as well as kitchen and break out facilities for new or expanding businesses, thanks to funding from D2N2’s Local Growth Fund. The Stapleford Business Hub is the second which has been developed by the Council and follows on from the successful hub in Beeston which is now home to 5 businesses. As well as affordable rent rates, the new hub will benefit from dedicated business support, intercom system and parking. The shared space will also offer fantastic networking opportunities with other businesses in the hub Councillor Tim Hallam, Chair of the Jobs and Economy Committee said: “The business hub in Beeston has been really successful so its great news that a similar facility will now be able to support growing businesses in Stapleford. With the Town Deal and HS2, Stapleford is a really exciting location perfect for new businesses and startups. We’ve already received enquiries so if you’re interested in renting one of the offices, get in touch as soon as possible.” The new business hub is just part of an exciting future for Stapleford, following a bid submitted to Government in

January for up to £25m as part of the Towns Deal Fund. The proposed developments include a community leisure hub, cycle ‘super highway’, safer roads, an enterprise hub, a COVID-19 town centre recovery grant scheme and an adult learning and skills centre. Anyone interested in renting in the Hub should contact Matthew Kirk on matthew.kirk@broxtowe.gov.uk Stapleford hoping for boost to its fortunes with “double-whammy” of projects. The expansion of the HS2 rail network could help transform the town of Stapleford -making it an attractive proposition to investors and bringing huge benefits for residents. That’s the message from the Stapleford Town Deal’s Executive Board and the area’s MP, who are urging the Government to ensure the eastern leg of the HS2 rail project - which includes a station at nearby Toton - goes ahead. A final decision is announced on the project in the coming months when the Government publishes its Integrated Rail Plan. It comes at the same time as Stapleford is waiting to find out whether it has been successful in its bid to receive up to £25m in funding from the Government’s Towns Fund. Stapleford businessman Ian Jowett, Chair of Broxtowe’s Towns Deal Board, said: “HS2 is about so much more than fast trains. It will bring huge economic and social benefits to the whole of the East Midlands, and Stapleford is a prime example of an area which could be totally transformed. The improved connectivity, not only to the capital, but also to the rest of the Midlands and the north of England will mean we are in a prime position for investors and those looking to base their businesses here in the heart of the UK. We have big plans for the town if we are successful in our Towns Fund bid and the announcement of the go-ahead of HS2 East combined with this would be a doublewhammy, revitalising the town for residents and businesses alike.” The Stapleford Town Deal Board submitted their bid for funding at the end of January, and a decision is expected in early summer. If successful, the proposals include a new community leisure hub, improved cycle networks, a new enterprise hub for start-up businesses, a new market and an adult education centre. Hopes are high for Stapleford’s bid after Staveley in North Derbyshire, which is also on the HS2 East route, was allocated £25.2m from the fund at the beginning of this month. Broxtowe MP Darren Henry said: “HS2 would be truly transformational for Stapleford, sparking regeneration across the area. We will see new apprenticeships, skills, jobs, new homes and investment on a scale never seen before in the town. “Combined with a successful Towns Fund bid, the impact would be huge, making Stapleford an absolutely fantastic place to live and work. There is such a wonderful community here and the people of Stapleford deserve nothing less for their future. “Together with the recent Budget announcement of the Freeport area around East Midlands Airport and Ratcliffe-on-Soar by the Chancellor, it means that the people of Broxtowe and the East Midlands will have access to opportunities as we return back to normal after the pandemic.” To advertise call 07854990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

Fancy a walk? In the past few months, many of us have discovered - or rediscovered - the benefits to health and mental wellbeing of walking. Now, local Ramblers are encouraging people to join them as they start their regular group walks again. Broxtowe Ramblers are part of the Ramblers UK national walking charity. As such, they are ‘Covid secure’ and can walk in slightly larger groups than are generally permitted. Each walk is led by an experienced ‘rambler’ who will have
previously walked and ‘risk-assessed’ the route; details of everyone who joins a walk are securely recorded for track and trace purposes, so you can feel safe when walking with them. You don’t have to be a member to join a Broxtowe Ramblers walk - so why not visit their website and see what is on offer? “Our main walks are on a

Wednesdays and some on a Sunday,” says regular walker Ralph Middlemore. “Wednesday walks are usually between 6 and eight miles, Sunday walks are around 10 -12.” Almost all walks are circular, bringing you back to your starting point, and walkers bring lunch for a refreshment stop. In current circumstances, everyone needs to ‘book ahead’ with the walk leader as places on each walk are limited to 15 or fewer (check website/Walks Programme for details). The Broxtowe Ramblers are a friendly bunch and walks are as much (socially-distanced) socialising as healthy exercise. “The miles seem to fly by when you’re deep in conversation,” commented ‘rambler’ Val Tucker. “Walking through blooming countryside or quiet villages with pleasant views is great for putting things into perspective.” Over the coming months Broxtowe Ramblers will be trying to find out what kinds of walk - and at what times - other locals would like, leading perhaps to shorter walks and more weekend - or even evening - walks. They’d love to hear from you, so you could email your thoughts to enquiries@broxtoweramblers.org.uk visit the website for details of the current walks programme www.broxtoweramblers.org.uk. We are also on Facebook (search ‘Broxtowe Ramblers’) and Instagram. For further details contact Colin Tucker 07854762351 or colintucker18@gmail.com

NOTTINGHAM CASTLE CONFIRMS IT WILL OPEN THIS SUMMER AS FIRST INTERIOR PHOTOS ARE REVEALED. • Nottingham Castle has announced it will reopen on 21st June 2021 following a £30million redevelopment. • The first images of the historic Ducal Palace reveal a stunning celebration of Nottingham’s “curious rebels”. • Robin Hood returns to the city centre with a dedicated exhibition and a host of other family-friendly activities.
FOLLOWING its £30million redevelopment, the first images of Nottingham Castle and the new home of Robin Hood have been released to celebrate that the historic Ducal Palace and grounds will reopen on Monday 21st June 2021. The exclusive sneak peek, revealed by The Nottingham Castle Trust, hints at some of the amazing activities and sights that visitors will get to experience this summer – including welcoming Robin Hood back to the city centre for the first time in over a decade. Sara Blair-Manning, Chief Executive of Nottingham Castle Trust, said: “Nottingham Castle has been transformed
44
into a world-class heritage site; this is a highly-anticipated moment for fans of the Robin Hood legend, as well as for anyone planning to make the most of time with friends and family this summer.” The three-year period of extensive redevelopment and conservation followed a major £30m investment from National Heritage Lottery Fund, Nottingham City Council, D2N2 and Arts Council England, plus fundraising by the Nottingham Castle Trust. Anne Jenkins, Director, England Midlands & East, National Lottery Heritage Fund: said: “Having stood, in part, for over 400 years, Nottingham Castle is a true symbol of resilience for the region. It is wonderful news that, thanks to players of the National Lottery, it will soon re-open as a beacon of pride and optimism as we move forward from the challenges of the past year. Its completion is testament to the significant investment and hard work from many people over many years. I am delighted that with its transformation almost complete it will open its gates to visitors from near and far as they explore and enjoy the rich cultural heritage of our region.” Nottingham City Council Portfolio Holder for Culture, Dave Trimble said: “I’m delighted that we can now look forward to re-opening the Castle gates this summer. It’s been a challenging few years since we began to transform the site and despite the Covid pandemic, we’ve managed to complete the work on budget and on time. While it’s been frustrating to have had to previously delay the reopening
Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.
due to the Covid restrictions, we now have a firm date to plan ahead for. “The transformation of Nottingham Castle will have a lasting impact on our City and its 1,000 years of history. It will bring new opportunities for jobs and volunteering, enhance tourism and boost the local economy as well as spearheading the wider regeneration of Nottingham City centre. As a world-class heritage attraction it will be something Nottingham people can be proud of.” Visitors can expect to enjoy the following highlights:
of must-see exhibitions and pioneering works from a range of international artists. Hood’s Hideout and other familyfriendly activities. A brand-new outdoor family adventure playground, named Hood’s Hideout, is set to be a popular part of the Castle grounds.
Permanent exhibitions celebrating legends and rebels throughout history
The new Castle experience features nine transformed gallery and exhibition spaces inside the Ducal Palace. The Mercian Gallery and Rebellion Gallery explore the fight for democracy, representation, and fairness while the creative galleries showcase a remarkable collection of fine and decorative art, including paintings, medieval alabaster sculptures, salt-glaze pottery, Nottingham Lace and much more. In the Temporary Exhibitions space, visitors will see an ever-changing variety
The naturally constructed playground, which has been built into the former Castle moat, is filled with tunnels, slides and rope bridges to emulate Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest hideout. Outdoor trails and activities will also keep all ages happy and mean there is plenty to do during repeat visits. Interactive displays to learn about Nottingham’s “curious rebels” Through the Castle Tunnel, visitors will get to learn more about Nottingham’s legendary rebel at Robin Hood Adventures - even firing longbows in digital archery competitions and sparring with Little John in the depths of Sherwood Forest.

A unique heritage site situated in the middle of a busy city centre The site has international significance with 1,000 years of history to its name, on a site rich in archaeology and human interest. It is expected that it will welcome more than 300,000 visitors each year.
The Ducal Palace is also home to the Terrace Café, offering panoramic views of the city alongside a themed, seasonal menu. A new state-of-the-art Visitor Centre has also been created which offers a coffee shop and the Castle Shop, selling a range of quality retail products and specialising in bespoke pieces made by local makers. Sajeeda Rose, chief executive of D2N2 LEP, which has invested in £7million of funding into the redevelopment of Nottingham Castle, said: “We are excited to hear of the plans for re-opening the Nottingham Castle in June, which is an important destination within the City. “The Visitor Economy is one of D2N2’s key sectors and D2N2 LEP is proud to be involved as a funder and supporter on this project, helping to bring Nottingham’s history and heritage to life and contributing towards the recovery of the city economy.”
46
Peter Knott, Midlands Area Director for Arts Council England, said: “It’s fantastic to hear that Nottingham Castle will reopen in June following its redevelopment. As a key part of Nottingham’s history and cultural scene we’re really proud to have invested in the building work through our Capital programme. Following a challenging time for the cultural sector, it’s great to see that Nottingham Castle is planning to offer a wide range of events and exhibitions, including welcoming Robin Hood back to the city centre for the first time in more than a decade. We look forward to the gallery and wider space fully reopening and welcoming back visitors soon.” In line with government guidelines, tickets must be booked in advance to ensure adequate space for social distancing. Ticket prices will be revealed shortly and once launched, will be available via www.NottinghamCastle.org. The opening date and visitor offering is dependent on government guidelines and may be subject to change. Photographs credit: Tracey Whitefoot.

Nottingham Castle Trust, an independent not-for-profit charitable trust, has provided a boost to those looking to jumpstart their careers, by announcing a range of placements for applicants aged 16-24 that are currently claiming Universal Credit. The vacancies have been created as part of the government’s Kickstart Scheme, which was launched by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to provide additional support to young people who are at particular high-risk of long-term unemployment following the Covid19 pandemic. The placements will be based at the newly refurbished Castle, giving applicants the rare opportunity to gain experience at an international heritage tourist attraction that is set to play a key role in the economic revitalisation of Nottingham when it reopens on 21 June 2021.
The placements are for a minimum of 25 hours-per-week for a total of six months. The Trustwill be providing additional training and support to assist successful applicants with securinglong-term work after the placement has been completed. Nottingham Castle Trust is an independent registered charity which protects and shares Nottingham’s worldfamous heritage with the people of Nottingham and beyond. It does this by generating income through the support of visitors, donors and volunteers. Sara Blair-Manning, chief executive of Nottingham Castle Trust, said: “Nottingham Castle i set to play an important part in the city’s future growth and its responsibility as an employer and supporter of residents is crucial to that success. Being able to not only create placementopportunities, but those that will support our city’s young people into longterm careers is fantastic.” The Kickstart Scheme roles are accessed via referral from the Jobcentre and include: facilities assistant, HR learning assistant, HR recruitment assistant,

learning and engagement assistant and visitor host, plus additional roles to be posted in the future. The Mighty Creatives, the leading East Midlands cultural education charity, is working in partnership with Nottingham Castle Trust to deliver the training and support aspects of the Scheme

Nick Owen, CEO, The Mighty Creatives said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people in Nottingham to claim an exciting placement role within a unique working environment. These vacancies will help to build confidence, skills and experience in the workplace – we’re thrilled to be working with the Trust and are excited to give young people’s career prospects additional support.’’

Care and Support at Home – What is Dementia? During the Dementia Workshops we regularly organise we talk about the definition and types of dementia as well causes, diagnosis, symptoms, behaviours and techniques to support those suffering from dementia. I have been contacted by a couple of people who have not been able to attend and have asked for relevant information and therefore over the next few articles I will try to summarise part of what we cover during the workshops. The strict medical definition of Dementia is; “a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning”. In simple terms, Dementia is not a specific disease. It is an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. There is currently at least 850,000 people living with Dementia in the UK and that number is expected to grow above 1.6 million by 2040. Two thirds of people with Dementia are women and one in six people aged 80 or over have dementia. Over 60,000 deaths a year are directly attributable to dementia and the financial cost of dementia to the UK is £26 billion per annum. Only 70% of people suffering from dementia that we support have received a diagnosis. There are many types of Dementia but some are more common than others. Although the different types may overlap, they are associated with distinct symptoms, patterns and distinguishing microscopic brain abnormalities. The most common types (and the approximate % each affects within the overall dementia population) are listed below: • Alzheimer’s disease. This is the most common type of dementia affecting around 70% and early symptoms include difficulty remembering names and recent events; apathy and depression. • Vascular dementia. It affects around 16% and results from brain damage caused by multiple strokes. The symptoms overlap with Alzheimer’s disease, and memory loss may not be as apparent. • Mixed dementias. Around 10% of the population. Although Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, increasing evidence indicates that many people with dementia have brain abnormalities associated with more than one type of dementia. • Lewy Body dementia. About 4% and it is characterised by physical tremors, stiffness and visual hallucinations. • Frontotemporal dementia. About 2%. This type of dementia develops within the forehead area of the brain. The typical symptoms include changes in personality and behaviour, and difficulty with language. It is important to understand that Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are different for each person. Cases can differ greatly from individual to individual.

“A Vocation not a Job:” Application Process Officially Opened for Trainee Position at Notts’ Largest Funeral Directors. A trainee programme set up by Nottinghamshire’s largest independent funeral directors, A.W. Lymn The Family Funeral Service, is offering the opportunity to gain five qualifications to kick-start a career in the funeral industry as the UK faces the highest levels of unemployment in five years. The four-year residential course offers the chance to work in each department of the business ranging from fleet maintenance to the mortuary and is open to those with at least two A Level passes or equivalent and welcomes anyone with a true interest in the funeral sector who is looking for a career change, an alternative to university or who has faced redundancy due to the pandemic. Set up two decades ago, the programme has since gained prominence as the cost of a university education has increased and unemployment levels have risen, with predictions that 2.2 million people could be unemployed at the end of the year. Over the course of the programme, trainees will gain National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) recognised qualifications; British Institute of Embalmers (BIE) Membership; a National Association of Memorial Masons (NAMM) Fixer Licence; Institute of Advanced Motorists Membership (IAM) and an Emergency First Aid at Work qualification. Trainees on the programme will also have the opportunity to live in a shared apartment with others who are working
54
their way through the scheme. The apartment, which is based above Lymns’ head office in central Nottingham, has four en-suite bedrooms and a communal living area and is included in the programme, with trainees paid their wages on top. Commercial Director at A.W Lymn, Pete Clarson, who oversees the trainees said: “One of the reasons we originally put this programme together was to offer more choices to those looking for alternative career choices other than attending university. Our programme enables the trainees to gain the relevant qualifications and come out in a position where they are completely ready for the industry.” Altogether the programme offers placements in all eight areas of the A.W. Lymn business which includes, funeral arranging and directing, stone masonry, floristry, coffin preparation department, mortuary, fleet maintenance, driver/ bearer and administration - and at the end of the programme trainees will put everything they have learned into action at one of the funeral homes in the business. Pete added: “We allocate time around all the different departments of the business, so trainees understand the role from each perspective of the team. We know from decades of running this successful fifth generation family business that becoming a funeral director is very often a vocation and not just a job and so it is of utmost importance that the people we train are given the best support, advice and direction possible during their training in order to nurture their passion for helping people at their time of greatest need.”

One of the first trainees to go through the programme was Jonathan Baker, starting in 2001, who has now risen through the ranks to the role of Senior Funeral Director for the Mansfield area. Jonathan joined A.W. Lymn while still at school studying for his A-levels. He said when he was given the choice of doing work experience, he turned to the funeral directors which led to him working through the school holidays as a bearer. He then approached the-then Managing Director at the time A.W. Lymn was introducing the trainee programme and so he was the first to go through it.
Jonathan, now aged 37, who is still working for A.W Lymn 20 years later, said: “I was originally drawn to the world of funeral directing because of the tradition and formality attached to the role, and the time spent throughout the programme ignited that passion. Being given the chance to experience every aspect of the business you can then go on to work in whatever department suits you best – there are so many opportunities.” Nigel Lymn Rose, Company Chairman at A.W. Lymn, added: “Over the years we have witnessed first-hand the interest and passion for the funeral industry and
wanted to offer an official training scheme for those wanting to pursue a career in our industry. Often people think that a job in funeral care means working with the dead – but that isn’t always the case, it’s more about looking after the living, which is what we like to demonstrate to our trainees .We’re proud to have been running the programme for over 20 years now and look forward to welcoming the new trainees this year.” The fifth-generation family run business has been helping the bereaved for more than 100 years, with quality of service and value for money at the heart of its ethos. A.W. Lymn now operates 27 funeral homes throughout Nottinghamshire and South Derbyshire. To apply for the next trainee position at A.W Lymn, visit www.lymn.co.uk.

Old Stapleford Bank Transformed to Home Notts Funeral Directors A.W. Lymn Nottinghamshire’s largest independent funeral directors, A.W. Lymn The Family Funeral Service, has transformed an old bank to expand its offering to the community of Stapleford. Fully equipped with two chapels, a larger onsite car park and an extended mortuary, the new Stapleford home is now based at Half Crown House on Derby Road. The move follows the need for more space and easy customer access as the directors continue to expand across the region, with a total of 27 funeral homes throughout Nottinghamshire and South Derbyshire. For more than a century the family run business has been helping the bereaved in the region, with quality of service and value for money at the heart of its ethos. The fifth-generation family business first arrived in Stapleford in 2003 as part of the group purchase of the Ilkeston Co-op Funeral Group, taking over six sites – the largest acquisition completed by the Lymn Rose family to date. Previously located at Parker House on Church Street, the directors have since gone above and beyond to help local families through every step of the funeral process, offering support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. On why they decided to make the move, Pete Clarson, Commercial Director at A.W. Lymn, said: “We are continuously reviewing our facilities at our funeral homes across the region and looking for ways we can offer the best service to our customers when they come to our homes. After removing the banking counter and internal walls, we were able to start with a blank canvas to give purposebuilt facilities designed around the families we serve.” Funeral arranger, Tracey Sweeting-Rowe, who has served the bereaved in the Stapleford community for five years, said: “I can’t wait to move into the new building and put my stamp on the place. Our new location allows us to continue to offer the same excellent service we pride ourselves on at Lymns, while providing more room to ensure our visitors’ time here is as comfortable as it can be.” Tracey Sweeting-Rowe To advertise call 07854990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

Twice Weekly Rapid Testing Available To Everyone over 18. All Nottinghamshire residents over 18 will be able to access free, rapid lateral flow tests for themselves and their families to use twice a week. From 9 April, in line with the government announcement, people aged 18 and over in Nottinghamshire and Nottingham will be able to collect two boxes of seven tests per person or four boxes per family from our asymptomatic community testing sites. People collecting boxes from our community testing sites can also have a supervised test to help ensure that tests done at home are accurate.
People aged 18 and over will also be able to collect the same number of tests from local pharmacies through the Government’s new ‘Pharmacy Collect ‘service. Local participating pharmacies can be found on the NHS Test Site Finder. If testing at home, people will need to register their results online or by calling 119. They should self-isolate if positive and order a confirmatory PCR test. Rapid testing has until now been available to those most at risk and people who need to leave home for work, including frontline NHS workers, care home staff and residents, and schoolchildren and their families. With
rapid testing offered to everyone, people are being encouraged to take regular tests to help prevent outbreaks and get back to a more normal way of life. Dawn Jenkin, Public Health Consultant at Nottinghamshire County Council said: “The government has expanded its rapid testing programme so that everyone can get themselves tested twice a week. We know that around a third of people with Covid-19 do not experience any symptoms and may be spreading the virus without knowing. Rapid testing detects cases quickly, meaning positive cases can isolate straight away. As these rapid tests are being made available to everyone, and if everyone uses them, more cases will be detected, thereby breaking chains of transmission. This will help to suppress and control the spread of the virus and in turn help to reopen society and the economy more safely.” Regular, rapid testing for people without symptoms remains available through the following existing routes: •
• •
a home ordering service, which allows people to order lateral flow tests online to be delivered to their home workplace testing programmes, on-site or at home testing on-site at schools and colleges.
Anyone with symptoms of Covid-19 should book a test online or by calling 119.
