Christmas cards, extra glass bottles, real Christmas trees – the countdown to Christmas has officially begun and Broxtowe Borough Council’s badger mascot Brock is helping, by promoting ten top tips for local residents to help to waste less and recycling more over the festive period. At Christmas an extra 3 million tonnes of waste will be generated, which is enough to fill 120 million wheeled bins. The Council is urging everyone to follow Brock’s top ten tips: 1. Starting to receive lots of Christmas cards? Remember envelopes are recyclable, so pop them into your green-lidded bin and the cards in the New Year. Or, why not be creative and create gift tags for next year. 2. If everyone recycled 1 more glass bottle over the holidays it will stop nearly 4,000 cars worth of CO2 getting into the atmosphere. Please use the Council’s kerbside glass collection schemer check out the website for your collection detailswww.broxtowe.gov.uk/recycling 3. Did you know that the wrapping paper we use in the UK each year is equivalent to the weight of 124 London Eye’s? Use the green-lidded bin (not the foil type). 4. Invest in a compost bin and recycle all Christmas dinner vegetable peelings. For more information visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/recycling for further details. 5. Use a bag for life when shopping to reduce the waste pile. 6. If everyone recycled 1 more plastic bottle over this period in the UK it would stop 400 cars worth of CO2 entering our atmosphere. 7. If you’re buying a real tree for Christmas this year don’t forget to recycle it. Use the garden scheme if a member or take to the nearest household waste and recycling site. 8. Don’t forget to recycle your metal food and drink cans plus those sweet/biscuits tins. In six weeks they could be brand new cans! 9. Presents and parties mean lots of packaging so make sure you feed that green-lidded bin. 10. Making a New Year’s resolution? Why not make one for 2015 to be the year you recycle more, reduce your waste pile and re-use where you can. For further information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council’s recycling section on 0115 917 7777 or visit the website at www.broxtowe.gov.uk

Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs- Relaxed Performance Relaxed performances are specifically designed and adapted for customers with a wide range of disabilities and those on the autistic spectrum. They have a less formal, more supportive atmosphere in order to reduce anxiety levels. The performance may also be more suitable for customers with very young children. Just a few of the fantastic comments from this year’s Relaxed Performance of Peter Pan; ’Thank you for making our children feel welcome, safe and special’ ’I liked the lights being left on, I had a really happy day’ ’I was able to have fun with my son and looking around at how the kids were able to jump up and down and have fun without anyone complaining was absolutely brilliant’ Relaxed performances provide an opportunity for customers who may find it difficult to come and see a show to experience the joy of live theatre. The relaxed performance is still the same show but there are small changes to the sound levels, lighting and no pyrotechnics or strobe lighting are used. The auditorium doors will be left open and customers, if they wish, are allowed to move around during the performance. The Dress Circle Foyer will be made into a quiet space for the duration of the show, whereby if customers need to leave the auditorium for any reason they can go to this space and relax before deciding whether to go back in for the rest of the show. For this performance there will also be an increased number of wheelchair spaces available. This will be given on a first come first served basis. Please note this performance will also be signed. Tickets for this performance only will be £11. A Visual Story to accompany the show will be available to download closer to the performance date. For further information, to arrange a familiarisation visit, any specific queries or to book tickets for this performance please contact Caroline Pope on 0115 9895627 or caroline.pope@nottinghamcity.gov.uk Date: 7 Jan 2015 Starts at:13:30 Cost: £11 with essential carers going free Ticket: Please contact Caroline Pope on 0115 989 5627 to purchase tickets or for any other enquiries. HALL PARK AWARDED LOCAL NATURE RESERVE STATUS A NEW LOCAL NATURE RESERVE will be designated in Eastwood, after it was unanimously agreed Broxtowe Borough Council’s Cabinet on 26th November 2014. The Council has agreed to declare Hall Park, on Mansfield Road at Eastwood, as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) following discussions with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. The site lies on an important wildlife corridor and has wetland habitats associated with the Nether Green and Beauvale Brooks, as well as grassland and woodland features which make it an important site for wildlife, as well as the people who enjoy a range of sports and outdoor activities on the site. The Council has a target of declaring one new Local Nature Reserve each year and this will be the 14th to be awarded the status in the Borough. Portfolio Holder for Environment, Councillor Greg Marshall said: “The Council is delighted to add to its existing Local Nature Reserves, which provide many benefits to local people including quality of life, health and well-being.I am incredibly proud of the Council’s commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural environment for future generations to come by declaring sites like this which provide opportunities for education, enjoyment and recreation, help to attract visitors and preserve links with the local community’s past.” A management plan has been prepared by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust to consider ways of improving the site for wildlife without impacting on the many sports and recreational activities which currently take place. Local Nature Reserves are places with wildlife or geological features that are of special interest locally, which give people opportunities to study and learn about them or simply enjoy and have contact with nature. For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3634, email env@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/naturereserves 24

Become Debt Free in 2015 British credit card holders owe an average of £2,000 on their plastic. To clear a debt of £2,000 on a card with an interest rate of 17% will take two years assuming a monthly repayment of £100. To clear that £2,000 with a monthly payment of a more affordable £30 (at 17%) will take 17 YEARS. But people are turning to other ways of borrowing, including payday lenders, friends, family, store cards and other loans for cars - even day-to-day living costs.According to one survey, average household debt now stands at around £13,000. To clear a debt of £13,000 at a modest 6% interest with a monthly repayment of £100 will also take around 17 years to clear. There are, however, plenty of simple ways to make significant savings on your regular spending that could clear your debt in less than a year. One of the golden rules of financial planning is to clear your most expensive debts first, in other words your credit cards. OK, credit cards offer a convenient way to pay for goods and services but if you can’t clear the balance every month, consider a low-cost loan as an alternative. Do the sums: a credit card debt (APR 16.8%) of £2,500 over five years will cost £1,212 in interest. A loan at 7.8% will cost £527. A saving of £685. More ways to save money Don’t buy designer labels Celebrities are given expensive clothes to wear. You’re not. Thankfully, millions of people have woken up to this and buy copycat fashions from the likes of Asos, and various other outlets. If you’re still tempted, face up to the fact that you may only wear the outfit once. Can you justify paying hundreds of pounds for a name? And can you honestly say you can tell the difference at a distance between a £600 designer bag and a £9.99 one from the market?

Sell your clutter on eBay Take this quick test: You’re at home. Open a cupboard. Look inside. If it’s full of clothes you haven’t worn, or ‘good ideas at the time’ you haven’t used, for, let’s say, three years - you don’t need them. So why not sell them to someone else who does? For fans of the understatement: Ebay is quite well-known and popular now. The great thing is you really can flog any old garbage - for a commission. Tip: you may want to buy a few items first to build up your rating as a respectable eBayer before you start selling. Cancel Holiday Insurance - (for now) If your annual holiday insurance policy is about to expire and you don’t have a holiday booked, DON’T renew the policy. You’re handing your money over to cover an eventuality that won’t happen You wouldn’t have car insurance if you didn’t own a car. Some people probably do, Simply restart the cover again the next time you book a trip. Save money on NHS Perscription charges One of the best things about being ill, and let’s face it there aren’t many, is that NHS prescriptions cost £8.05 per item. This is amazing value unless you need, say, four prescriptions a month. Four x £8.05 suddenly equals £32.20 or £386.40 a year. But one of the best things about being that ill is that you can cap the amount you pay using Prescription Prepayment Certificates (PPCs). You pay a fixed fee every three or 12 months and it covers all your prescriptions during the period you’ve paid for.
The current prescription charge is £8.05 (£16.10 per pair of elastic hosiery). A three monthly PPC is £29.10. This saves you money if you need four or more items in three months. A 12-month certificate is £104.00 and saves money if 13 or more items are needed in 12 months. PPCs are available by 10 monthly direct debit instalment payments. The prescription prepayment certificates allow anyone to obtain all the prescriptions they need for £2 per week. To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

Grapevine Money Saving Tips Buy Christmas cards in January to save for next December, some are half price and you can save loads of money this way! Consider using the supermarkets own-brand products rather than their premium brands as they are often the same or similar quality as the branded products but without the brand name and price tag Always make a list before going shopping and try not to deviate from your shopping list. Always look for vouchers or coupons in your local newspapers or otherwise go online and search for vouchers or coupons and print them off.

Message from Cllr. John McGrath from Stapleford. Hi everyone, hope you have all had a good Summer and are looking forward to a nice Christmas and New Year. Here are one or two things that have been going off through the Summer. Ray, Richard McCrea and myself think that we have finally sorted out some of the parking problems in Stapleford. Consultation papers have gone out to a number of residents to move the parking bays outside the bank on Warren Ave and other hotspots in the town. There is a plan to paint the zebra crossings and sort out a number of yellow lines. For all those that have received papers please return them as soon as possible. Don't forget it has taken hundreds of telephone calls and emails to get this far! Ilkeston Road Recreation Ground is the next area to be refurbished with play areas and footpaths, to bring it into line with the other parks in Stapleford, which many local councillors and Stapleford Community Group have been involved with. The planters in the centre of Stapleford are going to be dug out and replanted with something more appropriate. Volunteers required please contact myself and I will pass your name on. There is hope to develop the centre of Stapleford around the police station and the Maycliffe Hall area of the town. Aldi have put in plans for a supermarket in the Pinfold Lane area. There are also plans to build houses on the site of Moults yard. Any people who wish to comment on developments and any other planning issues should
46
look on both the Borough and Town Council websites - look for a notice of planning on a lamp post near the development, or telephone the Borough Council’s Planning Office, tell them you would like to speak to them regarding the development (either for or against,) and also inform your local Councillor that you would like them to speak for you before the Planning Committee. Remember Stapleford and Bramcote have nine Borough Councillors covering the area. As some of you are aware we had this with Hickings Lane, which has now been resolved.HS2 will now become a political pawn between Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. I still believe is the best site but people will still have their own views. It is good to see that Broxtowe's unemployment has gone down, thanks to the tram, the widening of the A453 and many other projects around the Broxtowe area. Lets hope we stop falling out over the tram and hope it will be a success in the future. The people who have suffered the most are the businesses in and around the route of the tram. I know people of all political parties are fighting to get them compensation which they deserve. Congratulations to Stapleford Council for a marvellous Remembrance parade, thank you to all those who attended. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Yours Cllr John McGrath 2 Park Street Stapleford Nottingham

‘Ducks Away 2015‛ The 24th Annual Duck race will take place on Thursday 1st January 2015 at Manor Park Toton. Starting at 2.00pm. As usual the Mayor of Broxtowe, (To be confirmed) will start the race by releasing 1500 plastic ducks into the River Erewash. They will float down the river and be caught at the bridge approximately 600 yards down stream. The owners of the first 10 ducks to cross the winning line will receive a prize. The Duck race is always a fun day for all the family. We will be serving teas, coffees, ulled wine and mince pies and we will be playing festive music For just £1.50 people can have the opportunity to sponsor a duck and win a prize. Angela Barnes, Duck Race Co-ordinator said “The Duck Race has become a great local event and people start ringing as soon as Christmas is over to make sure that they can reserve a duck for the race. We usually attract hundreds of local people and many family pets. It is one of the few events that all of the family can enjoy together. And there is always a great atmosphere. The people in the Toton/Beeston/Long Eaton/Sandiacre, Stapleford, Nottingham and Derby area now attend as a matter of course. After all what else can you do on New Years day? The race is sponsored by Long Eaton Plant Hire and all of the prizes are donated by local business. All of the money raised will be used to benefit older people.” Even before Christmas people start ringing to reserve themselves a duck and I’m sure that 2015 will be no exception. To reserve a duck call Angela Barnes – 07973 753046 Further details: Angela Barnes 0115 917 6337 or Mob: 07973 753046 e: info@angelabarnesconsulting.co.uk

LETS BAKE!- CUSTARD TART Christmas & New Year Sherry Trifle Ingredients 1 packet trifle sponges, broken into 5cm/2in pieces ½ packet of amaretti biscuits or 150g/5oz macaroons or ratafias 150ml/5fl oz sweet sherry 1 tbsp cognac 4 tbsp blackberry or raspberry jam 450g/1 lb fresh blackberries 450g/1 lb fresh raspberries 85g/3oz toasted flaked almonds 600ml/1 pint ready-made custard For the syllabub topping 125ml/4fl oz sherry 2 tbsp brandy 1 lemon, juice only 55g/2oz caster sugar 425ml/15fl oz double cream freshly grated nutmeg To garnish 2 oranges, grated zest only 85g/3oz flaked almonds
Pour in the cream with a pinch of nutmeg. Whisk together using a wire balloon whisk until it holds its shape. Don’t over-whisk, or whisk too vigorously, as the cream may split. Spoon the syllabub over the trifle and chill, preferably overnight. Just before serving, scatter with the grated orange rind and/or flaked toasted almonds. No cooking required Serves 6-8 Receipe from Antony Worral Thompson
Preparation method Lay the sponge pieces and biscuits in the base of a deep glass dish. Spoon over the sherry and cognac and leave to soak in for a few minutes. Warm the jam until it is runny then pour over the soaked sponge and biscuits. Sprinkle the fruit and flaked almonds on top then pour over the custard. To make the syllabub topping, place the sherry, brandy and lemon juice into a bowl and stir in the sugar until it dissolves.

Saving Money Tips - The times to get deals Best time to buy electronics Buying a TV You can normally find a great TV deal in June when new models are being launched Head to the January sales for some of the best bargains of the year on consumer technology products, like TVs and DVD players. New TVs are launched in June, so older models should begin to drop in price at the start of summer. Digital camera manufacturers typically refresh their product ranges at the end of spring or autumn. As a result, retailers tend to sell off end of line cameras at discounted prices to make way for new models. You are likely to find good promotions and discounts on stationery, printers and ink in July and August, as children and students prepare for the new academic year and shops compete for their business. The start of the new academic year in September also sees retailers offering cut-price deals on laptops, mobile phones and computer software. Best time to buy home appliances Dishwasher February is the month to get your hands on cheap end of line dishwashers Hit the shops between January to March to snap up cheap end of line white goods. This is also a good time to look for small kitchen appliances, such as kettles and toasters. September is a good time of the year to get deals on budget kitchen gadgets, because retailers try to tempt students returning to university. There are often great deals on these items around Christmas too. The Easter Bank Holiday weekend is traditionally the time we turn our attention to DIY jobs around the home. DIY stores, such as B&Q, Homebase and Screwfix, often discount DIY products around this time. Retailers are usually keen to clear out bulky garden items from their warehouses just before winter, so this is the time to grab some great bargains on garden furniture. 62

Best time to buy a car New Cars Head to showrooms at the end of each quarter if you’re in the market for a new car If you want to buy a new car, head to showrooms at the end of each quarter (March, June, September and December). This is when salespeople are most under pressure to meet their targets. If they are struggling to meet their goals, you may be able to haggle to get a better deal. The number of used cars on sale tends to go up in March and September, as people trade in their old cars and buy new models when new registration plates are issued, so used car buyers can haggle harder. The summer is a great time to buy an SUV, as demand for four-wheel-drive vehicles usually peaks during autumn and winter when the weather is at its worst. However, the winter months are the best time to buy a sports car, as sales are slower and dealers are often keen to offload that year’s models to make room for revised versions arriving early in the New Year.

Book Review by Clare Lyons Rachael‛s Holiday by Marian Keyes This was a first for me on two counts – my first book by Marian Keyes and my first e-book. The narrator is a drug addict in recovery, going through a range of physical and emotional changes as the book develops. In the first few chapters it becomes clear that their version of events may not be wholly reliable – and that their perception of their addiction and other relationships is also flawed. The book moves between Rachel’s current life in the clinic, with a wide variety of characters and sitautions (not all entirely believable) and her reflections on the couple of years leading up to this. In addition to her own memories, family and friends give their thoughts and feelings during some of the therapy sessions. The result is an honest and interesting exploration of addiction and recovery, with a couple of sex scenes and some humour thrown in. The characters are well developed and the story is very readable and well-paced. I wouldn’t rush to read more of Keyes as I suspect they are all on a theme, having said that the quality of the writing is good and the gentle treatment of harsh subjects is beautifully crafted. This is a ‘Walsh Family Novel’, each of the five sisters have their own novel with The Mystery of Mercy Close (about Helen) being the last in the series.
Children‛s Choice The Big Hearted Book by Nicholas Allan This book came to my attention as it was being sold in support of the International Children’s Heart Foundation, and finding age appropriate ways to discuss difficult issues is always helpful. It’s a lovely story about Babette and Bill, who spend all their time together until Babette becomes ill and has to go to hospital – it has a happy ending and is a lovely, simple story about friendship, health, hospitals and hearts. The illustrations aren’t especially inspiring but the layout and pace are excellent. If you like Nicholas Allan, you may enjoy his more hilarious offerings including the more seasonal Father Christmas Needs a Wee.

Grapevine Money Saving Tips Many people drink smoothies as a healthy shortcut to their five-a-day portions of fruit and vegetables, but there's nothing healthy about the price of these drinks. Buying a smoothie maker or jug blender and blending your own could save you a significant sum if you're a regular smoothie drinker. *Look out for fruit at the supermakets at knock down prices, ideal for smothies and save money too.

IN THE COMMUNITY HIGHEST HONOURS FOUR local people were honoured at a special ceremony at the Town Hall, Beeston to install Honorary Freemen to the Borough of Broxtowe. Broxtowe Borough Council admitted Jessie Clarke, Ron Faulks, Patrick Hamilton and Barry Thorley as Honorary Freemen of the Borough at the ceremony, which was attended by Councillors, Freeman and Alderman and friends and family. Leader of the Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic said: “These people have all served their communities unstintingly over many years and have given their time freely, way above the call of duty. Each is more than worthy of the honour for the outstanding contributions they have made to the Borough of Broxtowe and its residents.” The recipients this time come from very varied backgrounds and have all contributed in very different ways. They range from local fundraiser Jessie Clarke who has raised over £400,000 for Cancer Research UK over the years and volunteer Patrick Hamilton whose service to the Borough Council and its residents has impacted the whole of the community. Barry Thorley has dedicated his time to local charities in Broxtowe for the past 40 years and Ron Faulks has tirelessly championed local heritage and culture. Broxtowe Borough Council recognises the outstanding contributions of local people every four years by admitting them as Honorary Freemen or Aldermen of the Borough – the two highest honours that this Council can bestow. Nominations were received by Councillors who have used their local knowledge to identify those most deserving for the award. New web pages have been created to highlight the work of the latest award winners and information about all these, the Freeman and Alderman award and the others who have received the honour since 1979 can be found at www.broxtowe.gov.uk

Long Eaton Operatic Society’s Youth Group Proudly Presents Bugsy Malone A popular, pint-sized, pin-striped classic leaps off the silver screen and onto the Duchess Theatre stage in Bugsy Malone, a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the gangster films of the 1920s. Based on the hit 1976 film starring Jodi Foster and featuring an appealing and swinging score and libretto by Paul Williams, Bugsy Malone is good, clean, hilarious fun! Two gangs of children, in a fictitious city comprised completely of children, are in a 1920s rivalry of Al Capone-style standards. Dandy Dan’s gang has the upper hand since getting their hands on the “splurge” gun - a weapon that shoots an avalanche of sprayed foam! This puts Fat Sam and his bumbling buffoons in real trouble! Bugsy Malone, a one-time boxer, is thrust, not-so-willingly, into the gangster limelight, when he becomes the last chance Fat Sam’s gang has of surviving. All Bugsy really wants to do is spend time with his new love, Blousey, but that just isn’t going to come true for our hero. Bugsy Malone is a fantastic choice for our youth group as it is a master class in musical comedy. Just imagine how delightful it is when it’s brought to life by a group of extremely talented young people! The show takes place from Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st February 2015, starting at 7.30pm with a matinee performance on Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets are priced £7 and £6 available now from 07864 033663, Ticketsource (www.duchess-theatre.com) or directly from the Duchess Theatre at their regular Saturday coffee mornings.
