Welcome to our new gardening feature! Hello Gardeners… It‛s Gardener Steve here! and I‛m bringing you gardening tips, news and events.
I do hope you are all having a great summer and that your gardens are flourishing both in the ornamental and edible gardens. Try and spend as much time in them as you can but remember don’t forget to have a minute to relax, put your feet up and reflect on all your efforts so far this year. It has been a very busy summer for me up to now and I have been out on the road visiting and seeing lots with a visit to the Chelsea Flower Show at the end of May. I gave a hand to year six pupils at Chaucer Junior School, Ilkeston and the display garden at RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, then I headed to the NEC for Gardener’s World Live for five days, and then the gardening feature I do every couple of weeks on Erewash Sound 96.8fm, which is going very well too, so it’s all go go go ! So happy gardening everyone! In this months issue… Here are some jobs for you to do in your garden this month… • • • • •

Pick runner beans regularly to prevent them becoming stringy and to make room for developing beans. Keep on top of weeds as they compete with plants for nutrients and water. Stake tall or top heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid high potash fertiliser every fortnight. Trim your lavender plants after they’ve finished flowering to keep them compact.

Gardener Steve‛s Plants of the Month RUDBECKIA FULGIDA VAR. SULLIVANTII ‘GOLDSTRUM’ (Coneflower) Rudbeckia can be annuals, biennials or herbaceous perennials, with simple or pinnately divided leaves and large daisy-like flower-heads with yellow or orange rays surrounding a prominent conical disk. It is a plant genus in the sunflower family. The species are commonly called coneflowers and are native to North America and many species are cultivated in gardens for their showy yellow or gold flower heads. 'Goldsturm' is an herbaceous perennial forming a clump to 60cm in height, with erect stems bearing narrowly ovate leaves and dark-eyed, deep yellow flowers to 12cm across. This award winning coneflower is mostly used in flower borders and beds, as cut flowers, cottage garden, and informal garden prairie planting. Flowering period: August to October - Height and Spread: 60cm x 60cm (2ft x 2ft) Soil: Any soil but well drained Hardiness: Hardy Propagation: Propagate by division in spring or autumn Pruning: Deadhead faded flowers Pest and Diseases: Generally pest free SEDUM SPECTABILE ‘AUTUMN JOY‘ (Stonecrop, Herbsfraude) Sedum is a perennial with thick, succulent leaves, fleshy stems, and clusters of starshaped flowers. There are many types of Sedums, they all have different uses: such as low–growing varieties for ground covers and rock gardens and tall varieties for borders. Sedums are easy to care for and are good for cut flowers. Sedum Autumn Joy is a taller growing variety. Sedum specablie ‘Autumn Joy’ has succulent, lettuce-green leaves, topped with salmon-pink flower-heads in summer, maturing to pinkishbronze then coppery-red in autumn. This is an ideal perennial as a filler plant for a sunny, well-drained spot in the front or middle of the border. A valuable source of nectar for butterflies and bees in late summer to early autumn , the dried flower heads provide structure and colour in the winter garden. Flowering period: Late Summer - Early Autumn Height and Spread: 60cm x 60cm (2ft x 2ft) Soil: Any garden soil, well drained Hardiness: Hardy Propagation: By division in spring or by softwood cuttings of non-flowering shoots in early summer Pruning: Chelsea chop technique in May, Cut back after flowering or leave till spring as faded flowers give interest through the winter months Pest and Diseases: Slugs, snails and vine weevil can attack also root rot To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk GRAPEVINE-NG9 SEPTEMBER FINAL ONE 2019 copy.indd 7

Care and Support at Home – Supporting vulnerable people during a heatwave The heat wave plan for England 2016 (which this article is based on) describes the Heatwave Alert service which operates from 1 June to 16 October (previously 15 September) each year. The alert service comprises five main levels (Levels 0-4) which are based on an average threshold temperature of 26C during the day and 15C overnight. Level 3 was reached last month. Severe heat is dangerous to everyone. During a heatwave, when temperatures remain abnormally high over more than a couple of days, it can prove fatal. At Home Instead Senior Care we have now issued specific advice to our CAREGivers regarding steps to take during the current heatwave. We believe that these steps will minimise the risks from the heatwave and ensure that the health and well-being of people we look after is not compromised. Some of the advice consists of common sense precautions but there are also practical hints and tips which are applicable to everybody regardless of age or state of health. You will find part of this advice below. How to keep out the heat
•
Keep curtains on windows exposed to the sun closed while the temperature outside is higher than it is inside.
•
Once the temperature outside has dropped lower than it is inside, open the windows. This might require late night visiting so it needs to be balanced by any possible security concerns.
•
Water external and internal plants, and spray the ground outside windows with water to help cool the air however, avoid creating slip hazards.
•
Advise the person to stay out of the sun, especially between the hours of 11:00am and 3.00pm.
•
Advise them to stay in the shade and wear hats, sunscreen, thin scarves and light clothing if going outside.
How to keep body temperatures down
• • • • •
14
Ensure that the person reduces their levels of physical exertion Suggest that they take regular cool showers or baths, or at least an overall body wash Advise them to wear light, loose cotton clothes to absorb sweat and prevent skin irritation Suggest that they sprinkle their clothes with water regularly, and splash cool water on their face and the back of their neck. A damp cloth on the back of the neck helps temperature regulation. Recommend cold food, particularly salads and fruit with a high water content Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.

Prepare your business or organisation for Brexit. The UK is leaving the EU. Leaving the EU means your business or organisation may need to prepare for change. Delivering a deal negotiated with the EU remains the government’s top priority. With an implementation period until December 2020, this would give businesses and organisations stability, certainty and time to prepare for our new relationship after Brexit. However, the government must plan for every possible outcome including no deal. Without a deal, businesses and organisations may need to take action before 31 October 2019. Use this information to understand how leaving the EU may affect your business or organisation and what you can do to get ready. Dream Doors Winning Formula
H
ilary and Jon Brown opened the doors to their showroom on Wollaton Road in Beeston over a year ago, and since then, Dream Doors have developed a strong reputation for value and quality in both kitchen and bedroom refurbishments. Although part of a franchise, Jon and Hilary have had an amazing first year with winning the New Stars for 2018 at the annual Dream Doors conference, awarded to the most outstanding franchise within the network of over eighty eight showrooms. They have also won Home and Living awards for Best Kitchen Supplier and Best Money Saving Product. Dream Doors are Checkatrade accredited and approved, and registered by the Nottingham Trading Standards, also, they only employ professionals. They are also registered waste carriers so they take steps to recycle their waste whenever they can. The beauty of choosing Dream Doors is the piece of mind that you are working with a company that have been transforming kitchens throughout the UK for over nineteen years. As a family business, there are no hard sell tactics, only experience and friendly advice is given, providing you with genuine customer service from start to finish.”There is no pressure to buy and we always supply free no obligation quotes in advance. FESTIVAL
31ST AUGUST - 14TH SEPTEMBER 2019 Live music, Heritage open days, Poetry, Walks Exhibitions and more! At a variety of locations around the Borough Of Broxtowe.
Festival Memorial ‘Organ Mass’ Wednesday 11th September, 9.00am As part of the regular midweek Mass at this church , Alan Wilson will adorn it with colourful organ improvisations on the fine Conacher instrument, following the great French liturgical tradition, as practiced in Notre Dame, Paris. This Mass will be in honour of the great cathedral, so very nearly completely destroyed by fire earlier this year. The organ music will have a Laurentian connection too, as it was in Paris that Lawrence, ridden with tuberculosis, spent his last few dying days, before finally passing away in Vence. To the theme ‘Death and Resurrection’, the organ portrays Notre Dame rising again from the ashes, and Lawrence’s ‘living’ spirit now abounds in Eastwood. Lawerence and Theology: What DID Lawrence Believe ? Thursday 12th September, 10.00am - 1.00pm An examination of Lawrence’s references to God, through his religious background, his letters, his novels and his poetry. He was obviously very conversant with the contents of the Bible, but his extremely radical views on God, far too ahead of his time and totally misunderstood by his contemporaries, speak more today in an uncertain cosmopolitan and diverse world. ‘A Kimberley Requiem’ Friday 13th September, 7.30pm A colourful organ concert, together with readings recalling the rich history of Kimberley through words and descriptive music. Lawrence’s connection with the ‘Ripley Rattlers’ and the important railway station will resonate alongside musical tributes made to his great grandfather composer John Newton (who retired in Kimberley) and Arthur Linwood, a music entrepreneur from Eastwood, who would have supplied much music for the Lawrence family and the churches throughout the area. The reopening of this fine church, Holy Trinity, with its new superb organ, makes a wonderful setting; popular classics included. By Alan Wilson. Hi everyone, Maggie here, John McGrath, thank you for voting my in both town and Borough elections. It will always be a privilege to serve Stapleford. I will carry on giving 100% in everything I do. There is a petition still going round that myself and Richard started to have a full review of Stapleford traffic regulations. Please help us with this, as this will involve speed, parking and the general things to do with traffic within the town, heavy goods lorries also. Stapleford Town FC, that fantastic advert for the town, has now been given a 25 year lease on pitch 3 on Hickings Lane. To those that do not know where that is, it’s at the fire station end, this is in addition to the other improvements on the park. Thanks to Shane Eason and Martin Plackett officers of the council, this will now turn Hickings Lane into a fabulous venue for other events in the town, tournaments, festivals, and celebrations, everything that is good for the community. Well done Ryan, Pete and Jason and the brilliant effort from the parents and children. The fence will be fenced off with more trees being planted towards the east of the park. Aldi is taking shape and I believe it will give a spark to the town which hasbeen needed for uite some time. Broxtowe borough elections were won by a coalition of Labour, Lib Dems and Independent. I believe in both Milan and Steve and I know they will deliver what we have promised the people of Broxtowe. Watch this space.... Stapleford Town Council now has bright new faces, new leaders and hopefully some new ideas. Please look out for the neighbourhood plan meetings. We are also setting up steer groups, and group meetings for VE and VJ day. Ideas from all groups are needed. Please come and make it a day that your parents and grandparents would like us to enjoy , in honour and scarifice of their friends and family in the six years of World War II. Meeting dates to be announced. Finally, I would like to thank our MP Anna for listening to the concerns and hopes of Stapleford councillors on HS2. I asked for a meeting which Richard, Jan, Ellie, Tim and myself attended. We asked about the traffic troubles, a correct visual presentation, the right compensation for the people most affected around Bessell Lane, Midland Ave, Brookhill St, Kelvin Close, Westend St, Bailey St, Derby Rd, Arnside, Carnforth and Silverdale. Areas of our town in which we have asked Anna to find out the answers. Enjoy the summer Cllr John McGrath (Maggie) To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk GRAPEVINE-NG9 SEPTEMBER FINAL ONE 2019 copy.indd 61

Kitchen fires in Nottinghamshire have increased by more than 11 percent in the last two years. There are three electrical fires reported every week by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service caused by people misusing electrical appliances in the kitchen – over 80 percent of the calls involved food igniting. In the year 2016/17 there were 355 kitchen fires reported in Nottinghamshire. This rose to 397 in the year 2018/19. Now, charity Electrical Safety First is warning people to take extra care. In a survey carried out by the charity, one in five people in the East Midlands admitted to failing to clean their ovens in over a year. Other worrying findings included the fact that just over one in six East Midlands residents admitted to falling asleep with food left cooking in the oven, microwave or on the hob.Just under half of local residents leave their house with kitchen appliances like tumble dryers and washing machines running and a third leave them running while they’re asleep. Nottinghamshire Fire Service spokesman said: “It sounds simple but keeping your kitchen clean is one simple way to reduce the chance of a fire in the kitchen as a build-up of crumbs, fat or grease can easily ignite. “We would also urge the public to avoid distractions when cooking and if you need to leave the room, remove pans from the heat.“If a fire does occur in the kitchen remember to get out, stay out and call 999.
“For more information about keeping yourself safe go to https://www.notts-fire.gov.uk/stayingsafe/your-safety.” Phil Buckle, the chief executive at Electrical Safety First added: “ We’re well aware that the kitchen is the most dangerous room in the home from an electrical safety perspective due to the mixture of water, hot surfaces, flexible cables and electricity that can be found there. ”However, the worryingly high number of fires being caused where food is involved and as a direct result of the misuse of appliances in the kitchen shows that the public is in need of better education on electrical safety while cooking. “I urge anyone who regularly uses electrical kitchen appliances to head to the Electrical Safety First website and make sure they’re clued up on the simple steps they need to take to ensure they’re being safe.“We hope the videos and recipes we’ve produced with Rosemary Shrager provide a fun and engaging way to learn more about a serious subject.”

A new mural in Beeston Town Centre is well underway as part of the Beeston Street Art project. The design brings a touch of mother nature right into the heart of the town centre and has already been catching the eye of local residents and shoppers. Jeanie Barton, Russ Meehan, The Mayor Councillor Michael Brown and Deputy Leader, Councillor Steve CarrRenowned artist, Mural Life has spray painted the new design about the origins of the word Beeston (derived from the Saxon Beos meaning long grass and Tun meaning settlement) on Station Road, next to another piece of street art which was completed in October depicting three Beeston icons - the late actor Richard Beckinsale, the late singer/songwriter Edwin Starr and fashion designer Sir Paul Smith by Zabou. The street art was commissioned by Broxtowe Borough Council using an art fund inherited from Henry Boot Plc and is expected to be completed soon. Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Steve Carr said: “It’s great to have another piece of street art completed in Beeston to brighten up the area and showcase the town as the creative place it is. A massive thank you to Mural Life for creating such a beautiful piece of work that the town can be proud of.” Jeanie Barton, Organiser of Beeston Street Art added "This beautiful landscape helps make our project more cohesive - there are now many different artists, styles and subjects to explore in Beeston; we are well on our way to becoming a top destination in the UK for Street Art, which can only help our high street." The Mayor and street artist Russ MeehanMural Life, also known as Russ Meehan, said, “My idea was to try and encompass meanings of the name Beeston so I’ve combined the reeds, rushes and long grasses with the bees which represent Beeston for a lot of people. My design has just tried to put them both together with lots of flowers into a great piece for Beeston town." The redevelopment of Beeston Square began in 2013 and work on Phase 2, which includes 120 new homes, a cinema and a number of new food and drink outlets, is set to begin very soon

If you’ve been physically hurt, or feel like you are in immediate danger, call 999. The police have a duty to investigate and keep you safe. What about pets? -Many women and children are forced to stay with violent partners because they feel they can’t leave their pets behind. Research shows that there is a link between animal abuse and domestic violence: men who are violent to women may threaten to harm or kill a beloved pet in order to intimidate their partner. The Links Group is a multi-agency group that promotes the welfare and safety of vulnerable children, animals and adults. Members include leading associations and charitable organisations. As part of The Links Group, some charities offer pet fostering services specifically for pets belonging to women fleeing from domestic violence. For many women and children who leave violent relationships, the options open to them regarding their pets are very limited. The services listed below ensure that pets are cared for in a volunteer foster carer’s home until their owner is able to be reunited with them. All placements are strictly confidential.
