Welcome to our new gardening feature! Hello Gardeners… It‛s Gardener Steve here! and I‛m bringing you gardening tips, news and events. Welcome to this month’s gardening and I would like to think we can still hold on to autumn a little bit longer but I am afraid winter is just around the corner with the dark nights now upon us and some of our gardeners are starting to hibernate for the winter, but is a great time to reflect on the year and to start that all important planning for next year. People often ask me what do I do in the gardens through out the winter… Well my working day isn’t as long during the winter months but If the weather is kind to us I always find something to do. The leaves always seem to be later to fall so I will be clearing, raking them off the lawn is always a priority because of them stopping the light and causing fungus to set in as they decay I tend to leave them in the borders for a little while as a mulch. I also find myself doing winter pruning, working on manageable trees whilst there dormant and carrying out small landscaping jobs or developing areas of the garden, but there is nothing better than getting wrapped and getting out in the garden even if its for half an hour. So to kick off here are some of these autumn\winter jobs that will keep you all busy in your garden. Happy gardening everybody! • • • • •

6

Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns, ponds and beds because as they start to rot they can cause disease. Continue to plant spring bulbs especially Tulips (end of October /November) Plant out winter bedding in pots and flowerbeds such as Pansies and Violas Cover Brassicas with netting if pigeons are starting to be a problem Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into the garden

Gardener Steve’s Plant Of The Month SKIMMIA JAPONICA ‘RUBELLA’

Skimmia are compact evergreen shrubs with simple leaves and terminal panicles of small white or yellowish flowers in spring - summer followed, on fertilised female plants, by shiny red berries; most have male and female flowers on separate plants. Skimmia’s can be grown in containers giving autumn and winter colour to patio pots especially if planted with pansies, heathers and cyclamen. 'Rubella' is a small, compact evergreen shrub with dark green, elliptic leaves to 10cm long. Panicles of red buds, showy in late winter. This trouble free shrub is tough and long-lasting making it ideal for beginners and those with less experience in gardening where plants will provide colour and interest all year round. Flowering period: Berries in autumn & winter, flowers in the spring. Height and Spread: 75cm x 75cm (2ft 5in x 2ft 5in) Soil: Moist, well drained Hardiness: Hardy Propagation: Seed sown in autumn in containers in a cold frame or semi-ripe cuttings in late summer Pruning: Remove any dead, diseased, damaged growth And prune back after flowering to tidy shape of plant up. Pest and Diseases: Skimmia’s are prone scale insect, and yellowing of the leaf. To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

Two years on the road with Blue Skies The Limit & Gardener Steve In early 2017 I approached a new local events company, Blue Skies The Limit Events And Adventure, with the idea of hosting garden day trips. Owners of the business Michelle Neale and Claire Powderly took on my ideas and gave it their full support. So it was July 2017 and our very first gardening adventure with 23 guests on board took us to the gardens of the late Geoff Hamilton, Barnsdale in Rutland. The meeting place and pick up was the Seven Oaks Inn, Stanton By Dale with light breakfast being served, giving us all a hearty start to the day. So fast forward two years and to July 2019, Blue Skies The Limit hosted the 20th Garden day trip that took us to Hidcote Manor in the Cotswolds. In March of this year we welcomed another pick up point from the Navigation Inn, Breaston making it more accessible for guests to join us. Over the past two years we have travelled miles from Surrey to North Yorkshire and visited gardens of all shapes and sizes and such variety like Westonbirt Arboretum, RHS Harlow Carr & Wisley, Ness & Cambridge Botanic Gardens and Biddulph Grange just to name a few. For our trips we have the pleasure of hiring Harpurs Coaches, Derby with our designated driver Colin to which he his now part of our Blue Skies family.

8

Our thanks must go to Ryan, Kelly, Dave and Gaynor at both pick up points for their support and for the breakfasts they serve which gives us a great start to the day. So why join us on our garden adventures, if you enjoy visiting gardens, flower shows, botanical gardens, stately homes, garden centres and meeting new friends and wanting a great day out, Look out for another great line up of garden visits in 2020! If you are struggling to find that all important gift for your loved ones this Christmas why not treat them to a day trip gift voucher for more information speak to Michelle on 07413 408751 or email infoblueskiesthelimit@gmail.com Remember please do keep on getting in touch whether it’s to ask a question, share a news story or a send a photo of your garden at its best to gardenersteve24@live.co.uk Gardener Steve

The Studio at Padge Road. Living well with dementia and related disorders. A unique new concept in dementia care has come to Beeston. The Studio, at Padge Road, is an arts centre designed so that people with dementia can try out new skills or practise familiar leisure activities with support. With provision for music making, singing, exercise, theatre, crafts and visual arts, The Studio is a place for people to ‘connect and create’, supported by professional ArtsCare Assistants. Meanwhile family carers can have a well-earned break. The Studio’s team of ArtsCare Assistants is led by professional artists Emma Wass and Sarah Griffiths-Wright, who devise and lead a varied programme of individual and group-based creative pursuits tailored to participants’ abilities and interests. Everyone is fully assessed at the outset in a free, introductory session. No previous artistic experience is required; the principle is that human beings are all creative. For example, Emma is trained in the Timeslips technique, a storytelling approach that uses the inspiration of all present to weave a narrative. This shows powerfully that people with memory problems can still use their imaginations. The purpose of The Studio is to inspire a person’s natural creativity and we will tailor a programme to individual interests and capabilities. The activities will have seasonal themes and include: painting, sculpture, sketching, woodwork, collage, singing, making music, film screenings, seated exercise, shared reading, puppetry, poetry, art appreciation and gallery ‘visits’ enabled by new technology – plus lots more. Home Instead are proud to finance and support The Studio. We know that many of the people we support can greatly benefit from creative activities and having a local facility of this type will make a lot of difference to them and their carers. Our aim is to become a centre of excellence in dementia care, based on evidence and experience of how arts-led interventions can promote health and wellbeing. A nonprofit organisation, Imagine Artsdem Broxtowe CIC, has been formed to run the centre. If you, a relative, a friend or somebody you support has been diagnosed with dementia we will invite you for an assessment. We will provide more information and recommend a good trial day for a free tester session. Please email: TheStudio@imagineartsdem.co.uk or contact us on: 07543534336

Ingredients 300g (10.5oz) self-raising flour 150ml (5fl oz) milk 1tsp vanilla extract 150g (5oz) caster sugar 3 eggs 80g (3oz) unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly 2 mashed overripe bananas

Serves 8 approx 20 mins to prepare and 1 hr 10 mins to cook 349 calories / serving Method Preheat the oven to gas, Freezable 180°C, fan 160°C.

Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin. Sift the flour into a bowl, then add the milk, vanilla, sugar and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer for up to 1 minute, or until the ingredients are combined and lighter in colour. Pour in the melted butter, then add the mashed banana and beat for a further minute or until well combined. Pour into the tin and bake in the oven for 1 hour 10 minutes. Test to see if it's cooked by inserting a skewer. If it comes out

clean, then it's done. If not, give it a few more minutes and check again. Once cooked, remove from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes. Then tip out onto a wire cooling rack and allow to cool completely. If you prefer an iced cake, make up some cream cheese icing and drizzle over before serving. Tip: you can also serve this cake warm straight out of the oven with ice-cream as a pudding. Add some custard or little honey or maple syrup for added sweetness.

Kitchen fires in Nottinghamshire have increased by more than 11 percent in the last two years. There are three electrical fires reported every week by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service caused by people misusing electrical appliances in the kitchen – over 80 percent of the calls involved food igniting. In the year 2016/17 there were 355 kitchen fires reported in Nottinghamshire. This rose to 397 in the year 2018/19. Now, charity Electrical Safety First is warning people to take extra care. In a survey carried out by the charity, one in five people in the East Midlands admitted to failing to clean their ovens in over a year. Other worrying findings included the fact that just over one in six East Midlands residents admitted to falling asleep with food left cooking in the oven, microwave or on the hob.Just under half of local residents leave their house with kitchen appliances like tumble dryers and washing machines running and a third leave them running while they’re asleep. Nottinghamshire Fire Service spokesman said: “It sounds simple but keeping your kitchen clean is one simple way to reduce the chance of a fire in the kitchen as a build-up of crumbs, fat or grease can easily ignite. “We would also urge the public to avoid distractions when cooking and if you need to leave the room, remove pans from the heat.“If a fire does occur in the kitchen remember to get out, stay out and call 999.

“For more information about keeping yourself safe go to https://www.notts-fire.gov.uk/stayingsafe/your-safety.” Phil Buckle, the chief executive at Electrical Safety First added: “ We’re well aware that the kitchen is the most dangerous room in the home from an electrical safety perspective due to the mixture of water, hot surfaces, flexible cables and electricity that can be found there. ”However, the worryingly high number of fires being caused where food is involved and as a direct result of the misuse of appliances in the kitchen shows that the public is in need of better education on electrical safety while cooking. “I urge anyone who regularly uses electrical kitchen appliances to head to the Electrical Safety First website and make sure they’re clued up on the simple steps they need to take to ensure they’re being safe.“We hope the videos and recipes we’ve produced with Rosemary Shrager provide a fun and engaging way to learn more about a serious subject.”

Bramcote Hill care and nursing home offers the highest level of purpose built accommodation. We support people with widely differing care needs to include both residential and nursing care. Our philosophy at Bramcote is to provide a caring and comfortable environment for our residents, while maintaining their privacy and individuality. EXCELLENT FACILITIES Residential, Dementia and Nursing Care Our bedrooms are individually and tastefully decorated, and are fully equipped with en suite facilities. We encourage residents to bring those special personal items of furniture, treasured possessions, and photos to add to their room; our aim is for everyone to feel that they are living in their own home from home.

All our residents enjoy sitting and relaxing or maybe having a chat with friends or visitors, and they can do this in the comfort of our very large lounge and dining area, which is equipped with a large flat screen TV. We have two further quiet lounges for those more reflective moments and also for family gatherings when a greater degree of privacy can be welcome. LEADING A FULFILLING LIFE At Bramcote we firmly believe that getting older shouldn’t be any barrier to enjoying yourself through participating in a range of different activities. We organise shows and entertainments throughout the week as well as having an activity coordinator who runs a programme to suit all tastes. We have our own Mr. Motivator who runs gentle exercise classes to help keep people active for as long as possible. There are also aromatherapy sessions for those who perhaps prefer a slower pace. Many of our residents enjoy interacting with animals and our pets in residence, Ernie the parrot, a firm favourite with everyone. Each day is different, and each week varied, so there is always something for everyone to enjoy. HEALTHY EATING At Bramcote residents can enjoy good, nutritious food every day. Our cooks work hard to provide everyone with a varied menu. We can also cater for any special dietary needs should a resident be diabetic, or have a specific food allergy. A DEDICATED TEAM Making Bramcote the happy and caring community it is relies on the dedication of an experienced and professional staff team. Between them our staff have provided high quality care to the elderly for many years. We hope that you will enjoy a visit to Bramcote Hills. Please do not hesitate to call us and ask for our help.

Knife and hate crime education to give children skills for life. All Year Six primary school pupils across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire are to be offered a new education programme addressing risky behaviours associated with knife crime, hate crime, drugs and alcohol. Over the ten one-hour sessions, the DARE 25 programme will equip youngsters - aged 10 to 11 - with increased awareness and allow them to practice strategies to make better decisions and reduce the risk of harm. Using a range of teaching methods from role play, video content and interactions, it will cover bullying, peer pressure and the use of social media and show young people who they can turn to for help and how to avoid flashpoints for violence, abuse or other harmful behaviours. A total of £308,000 funding has been allocated to the programme over three years - allowing charity Life Skills Education to offer it to all schools for 50% of its cost. It starts in September and it is hoped that as more schools sign up it could become self-sustaining in the longer term. Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Craig Guildford said: “The programme will address the aim of the Nottinghamshire Knife Crime Strategy to work even more closely with schools to ensure knife crime is addressed appropriately and reduce the likelihood of young people offending.“We believe that if young people are given the skills to

38

understand knife crime - the causes, the triggers and the impacts – they can think ahead in a safe, classroom environment about how they might act to avoid getting into dangerous situations. It means if they are ever presented with such a situation in real life they don’t jump in without thinking because they already know how to react. “Skills like this could be extremely valuable in preventing knife crime and reducing incidents in the long-term. “The programme will also address our hate crime prevention work in primary schools which will be a substantial step forward, especially post the Nottingham Citizens’ study last year, which found more than a third of Nottingham residents surveyed had experienced hate crime (35%). “Again better awareness at an earlier age can have a big impact on the rest of people’s lives.”

The DARE programme has a 25year history of delivering drug and alcohol awareness in schools across Nottinghamshire. The DARE 25 programme, named to reflect this anniversary year, has been specifically

Peter Moyes, chief executive Officer at Life Skills Education, said: “At the heart of the DARE programme is our unique decision making model which young people apply to different risky behaviours. Through social and emotional learning experiences young people during ten one-hour sessions gain confidence in recognising and dealing with risky behaviours. They learn and practice strategies to help them make better decisions which reduces their risk.“They also learn about who to go to for help and how to better communicate with those who may be applying pressure to them to participate in risky behaviours.

countywide Knife Crime Strategy and will boost the work already under way to discourage young people from getting involved in a life of violence and crime. “The earlier we can help children to use their energies in a positive way rather than violence and offending the more successful the results will be. “That’s why I’m pleased to support this programme which will help those aged 10-11 understand the consequences of different types of crime on themselves and those around them. Just as importantly it will help them understand what to do and who to turn to if they become a victim of crime.” Claremont Primary & Nursery School in Claremont Road, Carrington, is one of the first schools to receive the new programme.

We specifically cover bullying, peer pressure and the use of the internet increasing their resilience to being victims or offenders of online abuse in its widest possible sense including online hate crime. “Our all-new programme will include the knife crime elements, hate crime and they will blend with the drugs and alcohol themes traditionally found in our programmes. The programme as a whole will build resilience to crime in the young people who graduate, help them find the right support if they do fall victim to crime and impact on the local communities through a reduction in crime and antisocial behaviour.”

Head teacher Rob Campbell said: “The staff, governors and pupils at Claremont are delighted to have the opportunity to access this programme. “At Claremont we are fully committed to providing our children with the relevant knowledge, skills and understanding to help them to navigate an increasingly complicated world. “We believe that education is a vital tool in helping people understand one another and make positive contributions to our society. We are really looking forward to taking part in the DARE25 project and we are sure that it will go on to be a great success.”

tailored to have a focus on knife and hate crime, whilst retaining its some of its input on drugs and alcohol.

Paddy Tipping, Police and Crime Commissioner, said that he was pleased to have funded the programme, adding: “This is an important part of the To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

Broxtowe Lotto Celebrates First Anniversary With Over £17,000 Raised For Good Causes. Over £17,000 has been raised for good causes by the Broxtowe Lotto, which celebrated its first birthday last month. Broxtowe Lotto Supporting The Local Community which gives local people a way of supporting local good causes, had its first draw on 22nd September 2018. So far, 27 good causes have signed up and there are 317 players who enter weekly draws for a chance to win a jackpot of £25,000, as well as prizes of £2,000, £250, £25 or three free tickets. Tickets cost £1.00 with 60p from each ticket going towards local good causes. As well as supporting local good causes, players can buy tickets for the Broxtowe Lotto Community Fund, which local groups can apply to the Council for funding from. There is currently over £4,000 in the pot and any groups interested in applying should visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/grantaid for more information. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE said: “It’s been great to see the success of the Broxtowe Lotto in its first year, helping local charitable and voluntary groups to become more self-sufficient as a time when funding can fall short. The Lotto is all about the local community and I hope to see more new players sign up to support the good causes who work for the benefit of our Borough.” Sandra Horner is Support Journey Officer at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, one of the registered good causes for the Lotto. She says: “The money has

48

been going towards work completed on our reserves in the South of the County, and enabling volunteers to come to our reserves and have suitable PPE, refreshments and tools.” Wendy Kane, Centre Manager at the Pearson Centre says: “The Pearson Centre has been grateful for the opportunity of being part of the Broxtowe Lotto. This year has seen it raise over £300 for its charity with the majority of the money being put towards a residential in France which was attended by 41 of our members aged 11 to 17 years old.” Diane Rowley, Chairperson of Eastwood Memory Café said: “Eastwood Memory Cafe would like to thank all its Broxtowe Lotto supporters for helping us to make a difference to lives affected by dementia. Our guests (and volunteers) love our organised trips out and the money raised from the Broxtowe Lotto helps us to do this. Over the past year we have had several trips to the theatre and garden centres along with outings to the Cromford Canal, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Sudbury Secret Diner. We have lots of ideas too for 2020 and with your support we can make these happen.” Tickets can be purchased on the Broxtowe Lotto website at www.broxtowelotto.co.uk or by calling 0115 727 0402.

Any Broxtowe-based organisations who are interested in signing up should visit www.broxtowelotto.co.uk

We are very keen to recruit new members to add to our 30 existing members but also to develop our relationship with the people of the area (younger and older adults). Our choir will celebrate its 100 years in existence in 2020. We perform several concerts a year and also 'sing for charity' as I call it. This year, for example, we did a concert to help raise funds for the 'Air Ambulance' organisation. Our last concert took place in Long Eaton Trinity Church on Saturday 28 September 2019. Also present and in charge of organising the soiree was the 'Carlton Male Voice Choir', the best known Choir in the East Midlands. A very successful evening indeed! My most sincere and grateful thanks Regards Jean-Marie Cador ’The Sandiacre Male Voice Choir practice sessions on a Monday from September 2nd and every Monday thereafter. WIN 2 TICKETS TO SEE

SLADE

SUNDAY 22ND DECEMBER O2 INSTITUTE 2 Birmingham! SLADE - Without doubt one of the most exciting bands to come out of Great Britain in the past 50 years. With their unique blend of perfect pop rock'n'roll, outrageous flamboyance and pure fun, and no less than 23Top-20 singles of which 6 were No-1 smash hits‌.plus 6 smash albums, Slade have become a firm favourite in the hearts of pop fans all over the world.

SLADE'S chart career has spanned 5 decades and their enduring songs "Cum On Feel The Noize" and "Coz I Luv You" are still featured today in TV commercials for some of the Worlds biggest companies. SLADE first hit the road in 1966, touring throughout Great Britain and Europe and becoming a regular concert attraction. Joining forces with the former Animals bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience manager, Chas Chandler, Slade achieved their first chart hit in May 1971 with the Bobby Marchan song "Get Down And Get With It" then, released in October of the same year "Coz I Luv You" was the bands first No-1 and a huge hit across Europe. Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe's biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making

58

regular trips to America, Japan and other parts of the world. Slade's catalogue of hits aresynonymous with the era:"Take Me Bak 'Ome", "Mama We'er All Crazee Now", "Cum On Feel The Noize", "Gudbye T' Jane", along with the many others provided a soundtrack to the Glam Generation and are still today, heavily featured on any retrospective of the time. At the beginning of the eighties, Slade were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, a massive annual event which attracted over 100,000 people. They literally stole the show, giving some of the worlds biggest rock bands a serious run for their money whilst kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As a result, the band signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem "We'll Bring The House Down",which reached the Top-10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back! Not content to rest on their Glam laurels, Slade began forging a new path through the hugely influential British heavy rock scene. A second successful appearance at Castle Donington in 1981, before a crowd of over 200,000 people, consolidated the

bands position and paved the way for the single "Lock Up Your Daughters", and the album "Til Deaf Do Us Part". While Slade were busy in the UK releasing the massive hit "My Oh My" to huge acclaim, LA metal band Quiet Riot were spreading the word Stateside with their version of "Cum On Feel The Noize", which proved so successful that they followed it up with "Mama We'er All Crazee Now". Throughout the rest of the eighties Slade toured and recorded due to them once again being a major force in British pop'n'rock.

Acoustic Guitar and Violin. John has also played Bass with The Sweet, Tremeloes, Bay City Rollers. Joining John on lead vocals and keys is Russell Keefe, having played in many original bands in his early years and recording albums for Polygram & United Artists, Russell has toured with The Pretty Little Things and Les McKeown’s Bay City Rollers.

The early nineties saw the bands "Radio Wall Of Sound" hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run! In 1991, due to the continual demand from around the world, founder Slade members Dave Hill and Don Powell decided to return to touring by playing a few select dates in Europe prior to embarking on what turned out to be a very successful two month tour of Australia.

A date for your diary, Slade are back for Christmaaaas!

SLADE have continued to tour the world. They are firm favourites on the lucrative German festival scene and undertake an annual UK "Merry Christmas Everybody" tour in December. They also have a huge following offans and regularly play concert dates in Russia, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, France and the Czech Republic. Led by founder members Dave Hill on Lead Guitar and Don Powell on Drums, with John Berry - Lead Vocals, Bass,

Slade today is still one of the most exciting bands on the road, and their stage performance is a dynamic, powerful and exhilarating roller-coaster ride of pure unadulterated rock'n'roll.

WIN TWO TICKETS TO SEE GLENN HUGHES performs classic DEEP PURPLE LIVE BIRMINGHAM – O2 Academy on Friday 29th November 2019! The Gig Cartel presents Glenn Hughes performs classic Deep Purple Live.

Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.

Glenn Hughes, the former bassist and singer of Deep Purple, known to millions as the ‘Voice of Rock’, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and the current front man for rock super group Black Country Communion, is pleased to announce that he will be performing Deep Purple only material with his “GLENN HUGHES PERFORMS CLASSIC DEEP PURPLE LIVE” nationwide UK tour in November 2019. The 10 date tour promises to be a dynamic, turn-back-the-clocks, twohour live extravaganza homage to his tenure in MK 3 and MK 4 incarnations of Deep Purple - one of music history’s most seminal and influential rock and roll groups. All tickets are priced £27.50 "I'm excited to be touring the “Classic Deep Purple Live” in the UK this November. I first toured Classic Deep Purple Live in Australia and New Zealand last year and it went down like a storm. We’re also touring the show throughout South America in April, and festivals throughout the summer. By the time we tour the UK in November, we’ll be on fire.” Deep Purple took a quantum leap when the then 20-year-old Glenn Hughes was seconded from British funk-rock outfit Trapeze in mid1973. As bassist and co-vocalist (with David Coverdale), he helped steer the legendary rock group in the progressive direction of Burn (1974), Stormbringer (1974) and Come Taste the Band (1975), while touring the world for three years.

His solo debut album Play Me Out (1977) preceded later albums with Black Sabbath and Gary Moore. The last 25 years have seen a rush of solo work and collaborations for the ‘Voice of Rock’ including mega hit America: What Time Is Love? with the KLF in 1992, and four critically acclaimed top selling studio albums released between 2010 and 2018 with rock super group Black Country Communion featuring Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham and Derek Sherinian. Glenn was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 20l6 along with other members of Deep Purple. Taking a page and inspiration from the Blackmore/Coverdale/Hughes/Lord/ Paice Deep Purple MK 3 California Jam and Made in Europe era, the upcoming live show features the Purple classics Burn, Stormbringer, Might Just Take Your Life and Mistreated, amongst others, plus tracks previously never performed live by the original MK 3 line-up. Classic material from the Tommy Bolin MK 4 period is also featured, including Getting’ Tighter – Hughes’ funk rock extravaganza extraordinaire, plus the brooding Coverdale /Hughes masterpiece You Keep On Moving. Deep Purple MK 2 hits Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are also featured, because, as Glenn points out, ‘’I did play both these numbers during my time with Purple and they were mainstays of the live set when I was in the band. As my manager pointed out to me, the first time Smoke on The Water was ever played live at Madison Square Garden was when

David and I were in the band in 1974. I love singing Highway Star, too.” Continues Glenn, “A few years back, I cut a barnstorming version of Highway Star for the Machine Head anniversary tribute album with my good friends Steve Vai and Chad Smith. I’m not playing anything on the forthcoming tour that I didn’t either play live or record in the studio with Purple.” GLENN HUGHES PERFORMS CLASSIC DEEP PURPLE LIVE is the first time Glenn has performed a show solely of Deep Purple material since his last show with Purple at the Liverpool Empire on March 15th 1976. Not one wallow in nostalgia, hence his extensive and varied career post-Purple, Glenn feels the time is right to acknowledge and pay homage to his past, his musical legacy, and, most importantly, to one of rock and roll’s most acclaimed, influential and successful rock bands. ‘’I can still sing the songs, in some ways even better than I did in the 70’s,” says Glenn. I can still perform them with the same energy that was on the stage back then, too. I feel that the time is right. It’s fun to get back into character of my days with Purple. I’m looking back at my life and I want to remember the good stuff. I’m incredibly excited to perform these songs, as they helped define the genre. I can assure you, the new show is going to blow your mind.’’GLENN HUGHES performs classic Deep Purple Live November 2019 UK Tour Dates include: Saturday 16th November BEXHILL ON SEA – De La Warr Pavilion Sunday 17th November SALISBURY – City Hall Tuesday 19th November CAMBRIDGE – Junction Wednesday 20th November NORWICH – Waterfront Friday 22nd November CHELTENHAM – Town Hall Saturday 23rd November HOLMFIRTH – Picturedrome Monday 25th November ABERDEEN – Music Hall Tuesday 26th November INVERNESS – The Ironworks Thursday 28th November MIDDLESBROUGH – Town Hall Friday 29th November BIRMINGHAM – O2 Institute Tickets for the above shows are available via the following: Box Office No: 08444 780 898 https://www.thegigcartel.com/Artists-profiles/Glenn-Hughes.htm. Helen Skelton reveals that she lost £70,000 following bank scam call “I got phoned up by the bank, told something dodgy had gone on with my account,” she told Lorraine Kelly. “The next week I had £70,000, all of my savings, had gone. All gone.” Warning viewers not to fall into the same trap, Helen revealed that all it took was a few questions over the phone for her entire life savings to disappear. It was only afterwards when Helen’s real bank contacted her that she realised something was seriously wrong. And now the former Blue Peter star has made a programme with ITV in a bid to raise awareness of similar frauds. The 36-year-old said she wanted to clear up the misconception that it’s only “little old ladies… who don’t understand the internet” that are susceptible to scams. “That’s a massively naïve assumption” she said. “It’s happening to people and they’re too embarrassed to say that it’s happened.” Remember, a genuine bank will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your full PIN or password. • Don't assume a phone call is authentic just because someone knows your basic details, such as name and address. • Phone numbers and email addresses can be spoofed, so always contact the company directly via a known email or phone number (such as the one on the back of your bank card). • Don’t be tricked into giving a fraudster access to your personal or financial details. Never automatically click on a link in an unexpected text or email. • Every Report Matters. If you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime, report it to us online or by calling 0300 123 2040.

Nottinghamshire calls upon residents to take recycling into their own hands

Nottinghamshire is proud to be taking recycling into its own hands. In what was the biggest and best Recycle Week ever which ran from the 23rd to 29th September 2019, Veolia (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractor) are now supporting the Recycle Now project which is asking residents to take recycling into their own hands and take action to protect our environment. Nottinghamshire Recycles: Empty, Rinse, Recycle 2019 is the year of the environmental activist and we have seen nationally a number of protests and marches. People have had enough of the status quo; things need to change urgently. Inspired by Our Planet, Greta Thunberg and Sir David Attenborough - environmental concerns have never been so important to the nation. For the 17th annual Recycle Week, Recycle Now capitalised on this heightened awareness and energy right here in Nottinghamshire; tasking

66

residents to act and focus on getting recycling right during the Recycle Week. That week was full of action asking people to rinse, crush, squash, sort and separate - in the bathroom, the kitchen, the office and the great outdoors. We will be highlighting the good work from Reduce, Re-use, Re-purpose and Recycling ambassadors within Nottinghamshire, and hope to inspire everyone to think about the waste they produce, and how to recycle correctly. Councillor Phil Rostance, Vice Chair of Communities and Place at Nottinghamshire County Council said on the Recycling Week, “Taking care of our environment has never been so important, and the recycling week is another great opportunity for the council to help support our residents make recycling an easy part of everyday life. The more we can do locally, even the small things, all add up and can help reduce the impact that we have not just here in Nottinghamshire, but across the country.” Lea Hawkes, General manager for Veolia, also said: “Help us make a difference this Recycle Week. For those who aren’t already recycling, now’s the time to start. Interest in recycling is higher than ever, and we hope that everyone in Nottinghamshire will take recycling into their own hands and ensure that the right items end up in the right bin.”

Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.

Latest research from Recycle Now reveals that over 60% of UK households are now recycling more than they were a year ago because of environmental concerns. The research shows that more and more UK households are recycling plastic drinks, cleaning, toiletry and shampoo bottles, amongst other items including cardboard and metal tin cans. Nearly a third of these people cite environmental concerns as the main reason for doing more and others attribute it to an increased awareness of what can be recycled. Whilst the research showed an increase in recycling, it also showed that UK households sometimes incorrectly put items like nappies, toys and toothpaste tubes in the recycling bin. Top tips for recycling in Nottinghamshire: Recycle all of your plastic bottles (without lids), and don’t forget that aerosol cans can go in your kerbside recycling bin with your cans, tins, paper, card, yoghurt pots and margarine tubs too.

Make sure these never go in the recycling bin: Food waste, nappies, food trays, punnets, clothing, carrier bags and polystyrene. And if you’re at all unsure about how to recycle a specific item, remember that the Nottinghamshire Recycling Leaflet can be downloaded in a range of languages from www.veolia.co.uk/nottinghamshire/ RecycleForNottinghamshire Nottinghamshire has a great range of individuals, groups, schools and charities who are taking Reducing, Reusing, Repurposing and Recycling into their own hands. Support for young people If you’re worried about your boyfriend or partner’s behaviour, learning more about the warning signs of domestic violence could help you – or someone close to you – stay safe. You don’t have to deal with this on your own. Try and talk to someone you trust – perhaps a friend, teacher or parent. Or call the Freephone 24 Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline, run in partnership between Refuge and Women’s Aid. Helpline workers are here for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you’ve been physically hurt, or feel like you are in immediate danger, call 999. The police have a duty to investigate and keep you safe. What about pets? -Many women and children are forced to stay with violent partners because they feel they can’t leave their pets behind. Research shows that there is a link between animal abuse and domestic violence: men who are violent to women may threaten to harm or kill a beloved pet in order to intimidate their partner. The Links Group is a multi-agency group that promotes the welfare and safety of vulnerable children, animals and adults. Members include leading associations and charitable organisations. As part of The Links Group, some charities offer pet fostering services specifically for pets belonging to women fleeing from domestic violence. For many women and children who leave violent relationships, the options open to them regarding their pets are very limited. The services listed below ensure that pets are cared for in a volunteer foster carer’s home until their owner is able to be reunited with them. All placements are strictly confidential.
