Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. Disposable Music As I sit and write this article, I am listening to Ed Sheeran’s new album. By the time you are reading this, it won’t be as new. But you will still know what I am talking about and I have no doubt that Ed Sheeran’s album will still be playing in millions of homes, cars and on many radio stations around the world. Now, since being a radio presenter, I have noticed something. Take current chart music; some of which is amazing and revolutionary material, some of it not so much. Go back to the 1960s and much of the music then is still known and recognised today. Songs by The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Elvis Presley and The Rolling Stones are examples. I guarantee you will have heard of one, if not all of those artists and be able to name at least one song by each. Their music was iconic and revolutionary at the time of release. However, it seems that recent music hasn’t been quite as iconic and is much more ‘disposable’. Much of the music that has been released in the past 5 years is forgotten about once it leaves the charts. Disposable ‘hits’ became the norm.
18
But are things beginning to change? Through each generation, music is influenced by a number of different things, whether it be political movements or social revolutions. The generations that listened to The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Sex Pistols, The Clash and Culture Club were probably told by their parents and grandparents that the music they listened to was rubbish. But aren’t parents of today saying the same things about current chart music? So, times don’t really change, it’s just that music evolves and changes. Personally, I think that there are artists around today who are iconic and will be loved and listened to by the generations of today and tomorrow. For example, Beyoncé who has sold over 118 million records has become one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She has also won 20 Grammy Awards and is the most nominated women in the awards’ history. Adele has also broken records with her music, including her album ‘21’ being the best-selling album of the 21st century and she also has had the most consecutive weeks with a number one album for a solo female. That’s 11 weeks at number one, to be precise. Then there’s Ed Sheeran who last month dominated the charts with 9 of his songs in the top 10 UK charts. Surely music from artists like these won’t be forgotten and will be listened to and enjoyed in the future by many generations?

So actually, nothing has changed. Throughout each decade, the artists that consistently rise to the top of the charts are the ones who are the best remembered. The top hits will stand the test of time because people from all generations enjoy the music produced by the top artists. Popular music always moves with the times as different sounds evolve. Some of this music is inevitably disposable, but equally some stand the test of time and become classics to be enjoyed by all generations.

Spring Cleaning, putting the spring back in your home. This month will see the country start to prepare for summer, the clocks have gone forward and the weather is becoming milder, it's the perfect time to banish winter from your home. A good spring clean is often a great way to do those cleaning jobs that get missed on a regular basis. But what about those jobs that are just too big to manage yourself, your soft furnishings for example? Your carpet is the largest textile in your home, which make it a perfect place for dust, dirt and bacteria to root deep into the pile, which vacuuming alone cannot remove. These can cause health problems to asthma and allergy sufferers. Regular home carpet cleaning (it's normal to have this done every two years) can really help to keep your home and family in top health throughout the year. That's where we can help. Our carpet cleaning service gets right down to the base of the carpet which not only removes all those harmful pollutants we mentioned earlier, it improves it's appearance and will also increase it's life expectancy. At Breedon Carpet Care, we've been cleaning carpets and soft furnishings for over 15 years, we're not general cleaners who occasionally clean carpet. We pride ourselves on being able to adapt to the individual needs of our customers, whether it's just one room or the whole house, we can help. Don't think that because the carpet is being cleaned that you have to empty all of the furniture out. WE move furniture. Items such as the suite and dining table we can move around in the room. You don't need to completely empty your room. All we ask is you move the lighter items such as toys and lamps, small tables etc. We'll move the rest. So why not call us today on 01332 865565 to arrange your free home audit?

ED on
Eddi Reader grew up in Glasgow and Irvine, Scotland and it was in those towns that she learned to use music as a vehicle for communicating with others through busking and performing at the local folk clubs. In the early 1980s, Eddi travelled around Europe with circus and performance artists before moving to London where she quickly became a sought after session vocalist. She famously harmonized with Annie Lennox touring with the Eurythmics, after her time with successful punk outfit Gang of Four. It was the short-lived but warmly remembered Fairground Attraction that really brought her into the limelight and to the attention of a much wider audience. The single ‘Perfect’ and parent album First of a Million Kisses both topped the British charts. However, it was her subsequent albums which signalled her increasing ability to assimilate different musical styles and make them all very much her own. Her unerring instinct for fine material, whether self penned, collaborative or a carefully chosen cover version resulted in Mirmama (1992), Eddi Reader (1994), Candyfloss & Medicine (1996), Angels & Electricity (1998), Simple Soul (2001).
34
Through these years Eddi based herself in London, but in 2001 she decided to move home to Glasgow where she recorded the classic ‘Songs Of Robert Burns’ album released to international acclaim in 2003. Awarded the MBE in 2006 for services to singing, she took her Burns songs on tour all over the world and found connections to the bard everywhere from Kolkata, India to Sydney, Australia. In 2006 she released ‘Peacetime’ on Rough Trade Records featuring the finest traditional players in the United Kingdom and produced by Folk Musician of The Year, John McCusker. Constant touring with her band has created a magical organic chemistry between Eddi and her players and the results of this relationship can be found on her most recent release.‘Love Is The Way’, Eddi Reader’s seventh solo album, was released in March 2009 on Rough Trade Records.

EDDI READER coming to LINCOLN – Drill Hall on Friday 5th May 2017! Produced by Eddi herself, it is her best work so far. Recorded in a matter of days with her band in Glasgow, the record has captured the award winning songstress in her finest form. Songs written with her long time writing partner Boo Hewerdine, songs written with her life partner John Douglas (The Trashcan Sinatras) and a song from the magical Irish singer/songwriter Declan O’Rourke as well as a rare Brian Wilson composition, an Eddi/Fleetwood Mac ‘mash up’, and a wonderful song from Dublin songwriter Jack Maher.2010 saw Eddi play sold out shows promoting “Love Is The Way” all over the world. It also brought Eddi’s Hollywood movie debut as she featured in Richard Linklaters, “Me And Orson Welles” with Zak Efron and Clare Danes. Eddi plays a chanteuse in the movie and is featured singing ‘Lets Pretend That There’s A Moon’ with the Jools Holland Orchestra. The original soundtrack features another two performances from Eddi. From the traditional to the contemporary, Eddi brings joyous life to all forms of song. Her taste in co-writers, writers, songs and players is impeccable and anything with her name on it is guaranteed musical treasure. Whilst the perfection of her technique is widely acknowledged,
what sets Reader apart is the depth and quality of the emotional performance; her ability not only to move the listener but to connect her experience to that of her audience. Her passion and instinct move people in a way reminiscent of those who have influenced her work. Her rare blend of meltingly true vocals and towering romanticism combine with an astute and pragmatic nature to make her a unique and powerful figure in contemporary British music. She has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers.

WIN TICKETS TO SEE WALTER TROUT AT ENGINE SHED LINCOLN Friday 5th May 2017! Walter Trout is on fire right now, ‘Alive’ is the sound of a man resurrected and at the peak of his game following the release of two firecrackers of albums; ‘Alive in Amsterdam’ (2016) and ‘Battle Scars’ (2015) - both reached the top of the Blues Charts and has rejuvenated one of the most formidable bluesmen of our time. Both albums received an avalanche of praise from BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris & Paul Jones, Vintage TV, Jazz FM, Planet Rock, Team Rock and Total Rock as well adulation from all corners of the press; “As intimate as it gets” declared Classic Rock on the release of ‘Alive in Amsterdam’ whilst that was just the tip of the iceberg. “There’s no doubt, he’s back” said Blues in Britain, Fireworks called it “a very emotional album”, Powerplay followed with a 9/10 review saying it was “Blues at its very best…[and] crackles with energy and electricity right from the start”, Guitarist Magazine bowed down with a 8/10 review proclaiming it was “a rollercoaster ride through some of the most exciting blues your ears will ever witness” and another 9/10 review came from The Blues calling him “a road warrior reborn.” After a blistering performance at Ramblin Man’ Fair, BluesFest and his October tour last year Walter is back in the UK calling at; Whitely
Bay, Glasgow, Sheffield, Lincoln, Warrington, Norwich and Leamingon and he can’t wait as he explains; “We are really looking forward to getting back to the UK and play for all our friends and fans. The band has been playing better than ever lately and we are psyched up! An extra added bonus for our UK fans will be the Trout Brothers Band opening the shows. It is one of the great joys of my life to tour with my family. So we hope to see you all at the shows.” Walter will be joined on the tour by The Trout Brothers Band; his sons Jonathan and Mike along with honorary brother Adam. Check out more on them here www.troutbrothersband.com These reviews highlight the unrelenting and at times emotional stage presence of one of the finest blues rockers ever particularly following his incredible life-saving liver transplant in 2014. Trout shares, “After experiencing the immense impact this has had on me as my body shut-down, and I could not walk, talk or even think about playing or singing, this seems almost surreal. It is like a phantom from another era that is mysteriously re-emerging, and here I stand stronger than I have been for years. It is hard to express how poignant this feels to have my

full voice, strength, musicianship and command of musical language back. My fans showed me so much love, support, and a commitment to help me in my time of need, the moment is here to get back out there and bring the music to each and every one of them who enabled me to see this day.” A Walter Trout show is not one to be missed. WATERY EYES Watery Eyes
Conventional treatment. Blocked tear ducts can be treated surgically by an operation that creates a passage between the tear sac and nose.
Most people experience watery eyes at some point in their life: on a cold, windy day; during hayfever season; while cutting onions; or after getting a bit of dust in the eye. Our eyes need this production of tears to protect the eyes and wash out any irritants or foreign bodies. It is most common in people over the age of 60 and in young babies. There are two main causes of watery eyes: over production of tears, and an obstruction to the normal drainage of tears. Overproduction of tears can be as a result of: Allergies such as hayfever or an irritant such as fumes, chemicals or a piece of grit. If the eyes become too dry, your tear ducts can over-compensate by producing excess tears, causing watery eyes. Cold, windy weather can irritate the eyes, cause them to sting or dry them out, resulting in watery eyes Conjunctivitis can result in irritated eyes which can cause them to water. Blepharitis.is a condition where the outer edges of the eyelids become inflamed. Obstruction to the normal drainage of tears. The most common cause of poor drainage is a blockage of the tear duct. In this case, the eye produces a regular amount of tears but these tears are prevented from draining properly. In babies this tear duct may not be functioning yet and should open up on its own at some point before your baby turns one.
42
Self help remedies. Wearing wraparound sunglasses in windy conditions. Anti histamines may be prescribed for allergy or hayfever similarly ocular lubricants will help dry eyes. If watery eyes occur in your baby, you can try gently massaging their tear duct with a clean finger. Our view. There are many causes of watery eyes, some more serious than others. It is always best to consult your specialist optometrist at an early stage to diagnose the cause and action the best treatment. Article by K.Lakhani BSc MCoptom Dip Tp Ip Specialist Optometrist

Trowell Parish Council HS2 Route Refinement Consultation Response February 2017. Trowell Parish Council opposes the Government's proposals for HS2 Phase 2b through the parish of Trowell, for the following reasons: The siting of the nearest station to Trowell at Toton would negate any time saving from HS2 and would increase road traffic. The time quoted by HS2 Ltd for journey times between Nottingham city centre and Toton does not stand up to scrutiny, as they have failed to demonstrate how they would deliver this. There will be no benefit to the residents or businesses of Trowell but there will be a detrimental effect on the well-being of the local inhabitants due to noise pollution, and to the beautiful countryside and wildlife. It appears that the consultation responses submitted by the Parish Council and its residents in 2013 have apparently either been lost, misplaced, overlooked or simply ignored. This presumably accounts for why there are no specific questions in the current consultation documents regarding Trowell. The Parish Council is gravely concerned that, if HS2 is built in the manner proposed, very large numbers of people will be adversely affected both during the construction phase, and when the line is operational. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF A VIADUCT THROUGH TROWELL VILLAGE The proposed construction of the viaduct at Trowell will slice the village in half again.
44
Moving the M1 will have a massive negative affect on those people and properties which are situated close to it. This is totally unacceptable. At the recent exhibition held in the village by HS2, it was discovered that those involved were not even aware that the M1 actually cuts through the centre of the village twice already. This proposed viaduct is likely to be the longest and highest in Britain, and will be a massive carbuncle on the skyline of Trowell. The building of this monstrosity will cause major disruption over many years, and will necessitate the demolition of properties. Most alarming is that it appears HS2 were unaware, until the recent consultation exhibition, of the existence of the village school in Trowell, whose site is adjacent to the current route of the M1 and falls within the proposed HS2 corridor and the path of the planned viaduct! If this scheme is going to proceed, then the Parish Council contends that the plan for a viaduct needs to be scrapped, and be replaced by a tunnel constructed under the village. An equally good solution would be to use the existing Erewash Valley main line. Members do not accept the argument that this latter suggestion would cause too much disruption to existing rail traffic. Whatever disruption is caused will be minute compared to the disruption to the population of Trowell, and the road traffic passing through the village, caused by either a viaduct or a tunnel. IMPACT ON THE LOCAL ROAD & WATERWAY NETWORK Local roads, already overcrowded, and due to take more traffic in future due to 2,000

Bea new homes being built locally, will be severely disrupted. The impact of these necessary road, public footpath and bridge modifications on the residents of the village appear to have been lost on those responsible for planning the delivery of the preferred route. The A609 Nottingham Road will have to be heavily modified in order to give sufficient clearance under the viaduct. This may mean damaging part of the old Nottingham canal, a local nature reserve. Again, this is a massive undertaking.
general store. For a village of just over 1,000 households it has a thriving community spirit. “Industry” in the village mainly consists of farming (6 in total), and a small area of land dedicated to various small businesses and a haulage company. The village boasts 2 local nature reserves on the sites of the now disused Nottingham Canal and the former mine at appropriately named Pit Lane.
TROWELL IS A RURAL VILLAGE NOT AN URBAN TOWN
It is not accepted that HS2’s proposition that homes only up to a certain distance will be affected by the noise of HS2, particularly if the viaduct option is used. It is believed that if this is the case then the entire village would be adversely affected. Trowell is already blighted by the M1 cutting through the village twice, heavy traffic on all of the roads passing through it, noise from aircraft, possible opencast mining, and frequent foul smells emanating from industry in the adjacent Borough of Erewash. Quite frankly, Trowell has had enough!
The ridiculous rules that class Trowell as partly urban and thus exempt from compensation are both ludicrous and cruel. The so-called benefits from being near to the Toton hub will not be realised, and those properties outside of the compensation zone will be blighted for ever. HS2 also appear to be unaware that the Trowell Park and Trowell Grove developments form part of Trowell and not Stapleford! As a result of this error HS2 officers were also unaware that the railway line over the A6007 also transects the middle of the village. Trowell has existed as a village since Saxon times with a village church first being established in 801AD. Trowell was selected as the “Festival Village” for the 1951 Festival of Britain, as a typical example of British rural life, a tradition it has been proud to continue, latterly winning the Calor Village of the Year for Nottinghamshire in 2009. The village has its own “Parish Plan” and was the only parish in Broxtowe to undertake this initiative, the forerunner of the Neighbourhood Plans now being introduced. For most residents, the aspect they see from their homes is that of open fields. The village also has a church, a public house (The Festival Inn), garden centres, a church hall, a parish hall, a post office, newsagent and
LONGER TERM IMPLICATIONS FOR THE VILLAGE & ITS RESIDENTS
CONCLUSIONS The Parish Council insists that if this project is to go ahead on the preferred route then the means of delivering it through the parish of Trowell needs to be completely redesigned with the full participation of the local community including the Parish Council. If the local area is to suffer the inevitable disruption and damage such a project is to bring, however it is delivered, those to be affected need to be able to see what tangible benefits there will be for the village in the long term and quicker train journeys to London is quite simply not the answer, although to date it is the only one the Council has been given. Film Review Beauty and the Beast
This ‘tale as old as time’ has been recaptured in a liveaction interpretation of the 1991 Disney classic. For those who have forgotten the familiar tale, beautiful Belle (Emma Watson) is held prisoner by a Prince-turned-Beast (Dan Stevens) in a glorious castle with magical houseware which come to life, as the unlikely pair fall for each other and in turn break the curse of eternal damnation. Gaston (Luke Evans), is the town’s arrogant heartthrob, who throws a spanner in the works, trying to win Belle for himself. This remake respects the animated version overall and rarely strays from the animated Disney storyline. They introduce a couple of new musical numbers, which let the film down slightly as they’re cringe-worthy and try too hard, showing that you can’t improve on perfection. Some of the stunning scenes are so visually overwhelming and theatrical that you feel like you’re watching a West-End musical. You’re drenched in magic, opulence and royal luxury. Emma Watson plays the perfect Belle, naturally beautiful and seemingly intelligent, much like Harry Potter’s Hermoine. However the quality of her voice in unconvincing, making you question how advanced her musical talent is. Similarly, Dan Stevens makes a great Beast but is let down by his musical number. The show is stolen by Luke Evans as Gaston. He is narcissistic, arrogant and unwittingly hilarious. He adds comic relief that will appeal to all ages; he is a baddie you can’t help but love - but not as much as he loves himself! Ian Mckellen, Ewan Mcgregor and Emma Thompson finally grace the screen in human form in the last five minutes of the movie, but their acting talent and personality shone just as bright through the inanimate objects they voiced, such as a clock, a candlestick and a teapot. A treat for the eyes and the ears; adults will regress back into children, and introduce a new generation to the wonder of Beauty and the Beast. 4/5 stars

Grown Ups Choice The 12 Lives of Samuel Hawley by Hannah Tinti This book is a challenge to review as it’s not something I would normally have read, and I can’t honestly use the word enjoy… but I’m also really glad I did read it, and the story has lingered with me for several days. The book is the life story of Samuel Hawley – it’s not a happy tale. The chapters alternate between his current life – largely told through his daughter Loo, and the story of his life to that point, slowly revealing the encounters and situations that have brought them to this place, at this time. The story has a brooding quality, and you sense early on that there will be no happy endings. It’s also a coming of age story for Loo, who begins to understand her own beginnings and make her own choices about how to live her adult life. The book is really beautifully written, the characters are completely identifiable and the descriptions of places and people are thoroughly engaging. Samuel is a simple man, life hasn’t dealt him a great hand, but when he falls in love he makes a series of decisions that are intended to keep his family safe… The ending is somewhat disappointing for someone who likes clear cut finishes, it leaves many things to the imagination of the reader, which I guess means you can give them a happy ending or not! If you like this then try Tinti’s The Good Thief.
Children’s Choice Astronaut Lamby by Jude Lennon We really love Lamby here, and are very lucky to have bought the toy set to go with it! The story is very rhythmic and funny and the crazy alien is exactly as our children would create one – all eyes and lots of legs. The colours and illustrations are captivating, and from a more practical point of view the font is very readable (I have struggled on occasion when some books get a bit too ‘arty’). We now know the story so well that our three year old can ‘read’ it on her own – and her older siblings can really read it as well, so they can entertain each other which is perfect. We are looking forward to more Lamby tales this year, and will let you know about his pirate adventures… An interview with Jude Lennon is on the website. w ww . mrsaverag eeval u ates. co .u k

Home Instead Senior Care Care and Support at Home – Fraud Protection Toolkit Home is where we should all feel the safest, especially as years go by. Scammers, however, have found a way to invade the secure lives of many by targeting older people’s post, the internet and telephone, as well as unsecured documents. The ever growing incidents of scams is putting many older people at risk, threatening to strip them of their assets, their independence and their trust. It is not just the impact a financial loss can have on an individual, regardless of age, but the knowledge that one has been duped into providing personal information, signing an agreement or letting people into one’s home. Home Instead have partnered with Think Jessica, a charity which works to raise awareness of scams and supports victims and their families, in order to spread the message about the scale of the problem and help protect vulnerable people. Through the provision of useful and practical information we aim to raise awareness of the risks facing older people in order to do everything we can to prevent these devastating crimes. Think Jessica was set up in 2007 by Marilyn Baldwin, whose mother Jessica, suffered for several years at the hands of fraudsters who tricked her into parting with thousands of pounds. The charity is supported by fraud protection agencies, local and international organisations, and police forces nationwide. In partnership with Think Jessica we have developed a toolkit that provides hints and tips to help you avoid being affected by criminal activity. Specific topics in the toolkit include: • Financial Abuse tactics • Top Scams involving Seniors • Top 5 reasons why Seniors are targets • Impact of crime on the Elderly We have also provided a series of checklists that can be used to help protect you or your family members. These include: • Criminal target scale • Scam-proofing Seniors checklist • Scam reminder checklist: Post • Scam reminder checklist: Telephone • Scam reminder checklist: Computer If you would like a copy of the toolkit please contact us and we will be happy to send one to you. ANNUAL SERVICES TO REMEMBER LOVED ONES A POIGNANT SERVICE to remember loved ones will take place at Bramcote Crematorium on Sunday 14th May. The annual service, led by Celebrant Rachel Snowball in the Serenity Chapel at 2.00pm will be an opportunity for friends and families to come together and remember their loved ones. The service will last around an hour and include readings, prayers and hymns, with musical contributions from Soloist Sarah Carlin. On arrival at the chapel the congregation will be invited to light a candle in memory of their loved ones, with their names read out during the act of remembrance. Local Funeral Directors and other service providers will be supporting the crematorium staff on the day. After the service (weather permitting), balloons will be released from the Crematorium grounds, following which refreshments will be available in the Serenity Chapel waiting room. This service has become a very popular event and attracts a large attendance. It is recommended that people arrive early to ensure a seat within the chapel and children of all ages are most welcome. Anyone needing special assistance is requested to contact the crematorium office. Comments from previous services include: “Lovely to remember our loved ones this way” “Very moving, beautiful hymns and songs – thank you” “Excellent, very moving, very good” “This was the most uplifting service I’ve been to.” “Lovely Service – it meant a lot” “A very moving service, well balanced and successful in catering for the varied members of the audience” For more information, please contact Bramcote Bereavement Services on 0115 917 3849, email bramcotecrem@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.bramcotebereavement.org 66

BEESTON CANCER RESEARCH UK COMMITTEE REACHES £500K MILESTONE The Beeston Cancer Research UK Committee have raised a phenomenal £500,000 for Cancer Research UK since it started fundraising in 1986. The Beeston Cancer Research UK Committee was founded in 1984 by a group of local women who wanted to support Cancer Research UK – Judith Birkby, Isla Thornton, Val Gregory, Joyce Willey, Viven Smart, Maria Pilkington and Joyce Worsley. Three of the founding members are still on the committee today and although Maria and Joyce Worsley retired they still support the work of the group. Over the past 32 years the Beeston Committee have organised a variety of very successful fundraising events including fashion shows, fish and chip suppers, Gardener’s Question Time events, sponsored bike ride, antique roadshow events, collections, quizzes, Lace Market Theatre events, a 24 hour badminton tournament, as well as dealing with the in memoriam donations from local funeral directors. Rebecca Elphick, Local Fundraising Manager for Cancer Research UK said: “On behalf of everyone at Cancer Research UK I want to sincerely thank the Beeston Committee for raising such a phenomenal amount of money for Cancer Research UK. The Committee have achieved so much since 1986 and are wonderful Ambassadors for Cancer Research UK in and around Beeston. Their success has not only been down to their hard work and
68
commitment but thanks to their wonderful friends and family, who have also organised events for the committee, helped with collections and supported the committee events. Margaret Boyd, Chair of the Beeston Committee said: “I’d like to thank the members of the committee for not giving up in the fight against cancer in all its forms. It has been a pleasure fundraising with them over the years. We are very proud of the amount of money we have raised.” Cancer Research UK’s vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Over the last 40 years, cancer survival rates in the UK have doubled. In the 1970’s just a quarter of people survived for five years or more but today half of all cancer patients will survive for ten years or more. And Cancer Research UK has been at the heart of this progress. Cancer is a disease of vast complexity and there is much yet to learn and that is why Cancer Research UK’s ambition is to accelerate progress and see three quarters of patients surviving the disease by 2034. However this will only be achieved thanks to the support of individuals and groups, like the Beeston Committee. If you are interested in supporting the Beeston Committee or would like to make a donation please contact Margaret Boyd, on 0115 9256805 or email: theboyds92@talktalk. net

Readers Letters Dear Grapevine magazine, I have written the following article which I hope you will consider for publication in your next issue We have a newly reopened station at Ilkeston, a new tram line to Toton and one planned for Kimberely. HS2 we are told is on the way and across our various councils locally, discussions are being had about strategic transport links right across our area. So why is Stapleford once again being left out of joined up thinking on ticketing? Stapleford and it’s surrounding areas of Trowell and beyond are about to experience enormous change. The HS2 rail link remains controversial. It will bring great disruption and unwanted changes to streets, neighbourhoods and our countryside. There will be huge development and with it the promise of investment and jobs, but this will only work if we can all get around with ease in an area set to be dealing with a huge increase in traffic. With the new Ilkeston station, the promise of a less than one hour journey to London likely to draw more traffic and crowds from Nottingham, plus an increase in the number of homes being built, we clearly need to develop better links with Nottingham and Derby as well as the rest of our area. The promise of “sustainable transport” was a key part of the Core Housing policy across Broxtowe, so why is the Robin Hood smart card; a discount travel scheme allowing through ticketing across public transport in Nottinghamshire, planning to further narrow its border rather than extending it? Up until March 27th the boundaries for the discount travel card were the Toton/ Stapleford Tram terminus and The Sherwin
Island. Many have asked for an extension to Stapleford. A move that would only seem fitting given that the Nottinghamshire border does not end in Bramcote, but instead at the border to Sandiacre. Not only has this request been ignored, but the boundary is moving still further away to Cow Lane Bramcote. Stapleford is proud to be part of Nottingham. I was born and bred here with two parents avid Forest fans and the same fascination all Nottingham kids had with our legendary Robin Hood. So why are we being left out? It seems ironic that Robin Hood was known for robbing the rich to feed the poor. Most folks here couldn’t hardly be described as “rich” and we rely on our City for work and play as much as those inside the City border; so why is it that we are the ones being robbed of discounted fairs and a joined up ticketing system? Stapleford suffered gridlock at times whilst the tram was being put in place and we will suffer far more in order to provide Nottingham with its fast link to London. If you want the Nottingham City Ticketing team to take a look at this again, you can do as I have done and email them here smartticketingteam@nottinghamcity.gov.uk Robin Hood would never have stood for this and we shouldn’t either. Its time we were included for once and had some good news to make the men and women of Stapleford that bit more “Merry”. Lisa Clarke

Trowell Parish Council News IN MEMORY OF KEITH. At the February meeting of Trowell Parish Council, Cllr. Mrs. Margaret Birkitt unveiled a former station clock which has been installed in Trowell Parish Hall & is dedicated to the memory of her late husband & former Council Chairman Keith Birkitt.Sadly Keith passed away last year after a long battle, bravely borne. During his time on the Parish Council he was instrumental in the 100% membership uptake of the then Trowell Neighbourhood Watch Scheme & also in securing improvements to the maintenance of Boundary Brook in the village to help reduce the flood risk to local properties.Keith was a dedicated, hardworking Parish Councillor who had a wicked sense of humour & is missed by Members & staff alike.

Services for domestic abuse victims gets £20m funding boost 76 projects across the country will get funding to support domestic violence victims including £100k for Nottingham. Projects across the country are to receive a share of £20m to support victims of domestic abuse, creating more than 2,200 new bed spaces in refuges. The funding will be shared by 76 projects that have committed to working across local authority boundaries and with other partners to improve domestic violence services. Communities secretary Sajid Javid said: ‘Domestic abuse is a devastating crime that all too often remains hidden. That’s why we’re determined that no victim will be turned away from the help they need, at the time they need it. ‘This significant investment shows our clear commitment to supporting and strengthening a resilient network of refuge services across the country, with further specialist support to help victims go on to rebuild their lives.’ As well as providing safe accommodation, the funding will also be used to provide further access to education, employment and life skills training.

AT THE HEART OF YOUR FUNERAL PLANNING When we started providing funeral pre-payment plans more than 20 years ago, the idea of ‘paying for your funeral in advance’ was quite unusual. Today, funeral plans are more well known, and available from a wide variety of sources. However, you wouldn’t buy a will from a DIY superstore, so why buy something so important from someone who knows nothing about funerals, your local area, or you. Buying a plan from Gillotts means you can sit down with one of our staff who know local facilities and talk about what you want your funeral to be like. If you wish, you can go into details: music, flowers, what everyone should wear, which photographs to Eastwood Office

If you already have a funeral plan that you’re worried may not meet your needs, or that is registered with a funeral home you’re not familiar with, get in touch and we’ll advise you.

LET US FOCUS ON YOUR CONCERNS At a time of bereavement, it’s only natural that your mind is in a whirl, with questions that need answering and concerns that need addressing. At Gillotts Funeral Directors, we have generations of experience in leading families through this difficult time and providing a compassionate, flexible and high quality service. Our philosophy is to tailor the service we provide to suit each family – some prefer us to visit them at home, others prefer to visit us in the office. Some people want us to do everything – order flowers, produce service sheets, place press notices – whilst others prefer to do things themselves.

The sessions will offer: A private, safe space to talk through their concerns A chance to find out more about the legal options available to them An opportunity to obtain free legal advice in an emergency situation, in the time of a crisis Free impartial legal advice on a range of civil matters Many of the women who Broxtowe Women’s Project supports have a number of complex issues. Broxtowe Women’s Project website The project challenges domestic violence and abuse by increasing society's awareness of violent and abusive behaviour and offers support to all women experiencing domestic violence in the Broxtowe borough. Tel: 01773 719111 Midlands Women’s Aid website A registered charity, based in Nottinghamshire, that has given refuge, advice and support to thousands of women and children since 1976. Its refuge can offer accommodation for up to seven women, with or without children. Tel: 01159 257647 How We Can Help- We are a registered charity that has given refuge and support to thousands of women since 1976. There is always someone ready to talk to you with practical advice and support day and night on: Nottingham (0115) 925 7647 Admissions can be made to the refuge at any time. If we are unable to admit you we can always suggest other agencies to contact. Our refuge is a pleasant and secure home where women and children can be helped to cope and recover from the trauma of family breakdown associated with violence or abuse. We can accept up to seven families at any time. Each family has a private family room and the refuge is never overcrowded. Midlands Women’s Aid workers will not tell you what decisions to make or what to do with your life. Instead our workers will: support you and work with you to help you feel in control of your own life and your own decisions we have a lot of experience and information which we will use to help you find the right path for you if we can’t answer all of your questions or provide you with all the help and support you need, then we will know other agencies that can. Living in a violent relationship destroys confidence and self respect.
Violent parents leave a legacy of violence to their children. If you are experiencing Domestic Violence,it is not just your problem.
