Money Saving Tips

7

Grow your own herbs. Keeping pots of herbs in your kitchen can save you money on having to repeat purchase packs of herbs. A basil plant costs £1.25 at Sainsbury’s, and will survive as long as it gets sunlight and water, and is kept away from draughts in winter. A 28g basil bunch costs 80p from Sainsbury’s and will only last a few days. Growing from seed can be even more cost effective. Use a slowcooker for cooking stews. Using a slow cooker to make a stew is both easier – you can leave it to stew while you’re at work all day – and cheaper. It costs around 10.5p to use a slow cooker for around eight hours, while using an oven will cost far more at approx 30p for one hour. Swap books rather than buy new ones. Once you’ve read a book, you can swap it with someone else for a a book of theirs that you haven’t read yet, rather than paying for a new one. Readitswapit.co.uk has hundreds of thousands of books available for users to choose from. Alternatively, charity shop books are very good, and of course always check your local library or ask if they can order the book you want

Care and Support at Home – The Care Act 2014 A couple of years ago I wrote an article on Needs and Funding to describe the different ways people have of financing care and support. The Dilnot report; the outcome of a study commissioned by the government 3 years ago, produced a number of recommendations and some of them became the basis of The Care Act 2014. The Care Act 2014 did not in fact become applicable until 1 April this year. It brings a number of important changes to the obligations Local Authorities have when assessing individuals for care needs and the way they go about allocating care providers. It changes some of the sums involved in assessing financial qualification as well as the maximum people are expected to pay for their care. The highlights; • As well as an assessment of needs Local Authorities carry out a “financial needs” assessment to find out how much you have in savings. If this is £23,250 or more then then you are a “self funder” and do not qualify for Local Authority financial help. From 1 April 2020 this figure will come down to £17,000 • A Lifetime Care Cap will be introduced so that no one pays more than a total of £72,000 for their care. When applicable to care homes there will be a reduction for “board and lodging”. The cap was supposed to come into effect 1 April 2016 however, it has been deferred until 2020. • Until fairly recently, if you were eligible for help with your personal or social care needs from the local authority you would generally have received a care plan with a list of services to help you and a care provider, appointed by the local authority, would have made arrangements to deliver the care. The 2014 Care Act has now introduced an obligation for councils to offer (and individuals the right to request) a Personal Budget. • A Personal Budget is a statement of the amount of money needed to meet your eligible social care needs. As of 1 April 2015, you now have a legal right to a personal budget from the council. The personal budget can then be paid on a monthly basis into a dedicated bank account. You can then make arrangements to select a care provider and pay their fees from the monies paid into the account. Although The Social Care Act 2014 has not addressed many of the current shortcomings in the care and social needs provision of services it is a step in the right direction. Money Saving Tips No more shampoo: , if you were to step into your bathroom now and venture into the recesses of your cupboards, how many unused and unfinished hair, cosmetic and skin products would you find lying back there? Have a clean-up, throw out all the old, used-up stuff and start using all that forgotten stuff. Don’t buy any new shampoos, conditioners, make-up or lotions until you’ve used it all up. Replace your old boiler: If your boiler is over 15 years old it is no longer efficient and draining loads of energy, and therefore, cash. It can be expensive to purchase a new boiler, but the savings made with lower heating bills will see the cost recovered within three to five years. There are also government grants that will offer you money, or will cover the cost of purchase and installation. After installing your high efficiency condensing boiler with heating controls you can expect to save between £190- 240 annually on your heating bills. Contact your local Energy Efficiency Advice Centre on 0800 512012 for more details on energy efficient boilers and for grant information. If you would like to compare the efficiency of different boilers visit www.boilers.org.uk.

Will you struggle to find time for a holiday this year? “Before I came across Go Live I had no social life, I had already given up full time work to care for my elderly mother and I hoped to spend some extra time with my grandchildren, but the more time I spent with mum the more she needed me. Soon all of my time was spent either looking after her or running some sort of errand on her behalf. My husband although supportive I could tell was unhappy, we couldn’t even take a short break, let alone a holiday. I felt trapped, guilty and very alone as no one seemed to understand. I didn’t want to put her into care as I had gone into semi-retirement so we wouldn’t have to, I was also concerned about the spiralling costs. I was introduced to Go Live via my cousin, who lives next door to one of their employees. I got in touch with them and was surprised how helpful and understanding they were, they were even able to tell me what funding I might be entitled to. They were happy to do as much or as little as I felt comfortable with. We agreed to a couple of hours per week so Mum and her dedicated carer could get to know each other. We have now been away and I could relax knowing that my mum was being looked after, I could even attend my son’s wedding and relax, mum was there to with her carer which meant I could enjoy the occasion with all my family. It’s a truly professionally ran, liberating company and I couldn’t recommend it enough.” To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk GRAPEVINE-NG9 August MAIN 2015.indd 19

Find out why part of what is now the Council House ran with blood for centuries; who was the ‘lady’ that has welcomed visitors for more than 80 years; and what is the ‘secret’ that helps sound-proof the Council Chamber? BRINSLEY HEADSTOCK TO FLY THE FLAG Broxtowe Borough Council is delighted to learn that Brinsley Headstock Open space has been awarded a prestigious Community Green Flag alongside Sandy Lane & Alexandrina Plantation and the Old Church Tower, Bramcote. Both Bramcote Hills Park and Colliers Wood have also retained their Green Flags to further highlight all these important parks and green spaces in the Borough as being the very best in the UK. The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Sue Bagshaw was one of the first to congratulate the local volunteers when she visited the site to celebrate the work of the group. A Green Flag is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Councillor Mick Brown said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Community Green Flag Award for Brinsley Headstocks Green Space for first time from Keep Britain Tidy. I also want to thank the volunteers who have been part of this process and who have worked so hard to protect our local heritage and to help us achieve this” .“This Award recognises and highlights that local people in Broxtowe are benefitting from parks and green space of the very highest quality right across the Borough.”The Friends of Brinsley Headstocks was formed in 2008 and is a voluntary community group who help to maintain and develop Brinsley’s old mining site. They work in partnership with Broxtowe Borough Council and other groups to develop the area as a heritage and local nature reserve, an amenity for the community and a focus for the mining and literary heritage of our area. Grapevine tips - Easy changes for a healthier family

How many times have you tried to stick to a program but the demands of running a family have undermined your efforts? When it comes to healthy eating and exercise, one of the secrets to the success is getting the whole family on board, it can be fun when everyone gets involved. 1. Find healthy snacks for work or school that you can make together Make up a scrapbook of healthy recipes you find in the newspaper or online and keep them so you never run out of ideas! Make snacks in bulk and package them up in portion sizes so you are not tempted to over-indulge. Ensure that snacks are an integral part of your family’s overall daily nutrition – not an add-on that doesn’t support your quest for good health. 2, Don’t go cold turkey, make small gradual changes. You’ll only find yourself frustrated and unmotivated to you aim too high at first; choose do-able goals that you can break down into achievable weekly goals. Start with things like drinking more water instead of soft drink or juice. Having one meat-free meal a week. Choosing wholemeal bread instead of white … 3.Consistently encourage each other and be interested in health and fitness in general. This is a key factor. It’s no good having someone in the house, “just not into it”. Encourage each other with words and actions to make it a choose or lose situation.Emphasise that you are all in this together and that this is the way your family lives now. It won’t take long for everyone to become used to the changes

32

you make.Good idea to start with the little ones whilst they are young!. 4. Choose a sport you all enjoy even if its only a few times a week Swimming, football, walking the dog as a family, cycling, throwing a frisbee around on a park, running etc. 5. Make a pact: drink water during the week and juice and fizzy drinks are a weekend-only treat Treat yourselves on the weekend for doing such a great job during the week, if this is something that you feel is a rewarding goal. Keep water cool in the fridge in 500ml bottles that are labelled with each family member’s name. This way it’s an easy choice to grab and everyone can keep track of how much they are drinking. 6.Cut back on daily dessert and swap to a healthier fruit option Instead of saying ‘I won’t get to eat dessert every night any more’, focus on the positive and say something like, ‘I will eat fruit 2-3 nights a week for dessert’. Sometimes focusing on what you can’t have means you miss out on the joy of what you can have. Allow yourself time to change. Quite often you find yourself trying to modify habits that your family has had for years, so be patient. If you consistently make small changes towards your long-term goal, you will eventually get there. Remember to give your family time to get used to one change before introducing another. Good luck!

Right in the heart of Stapleford Tips on Car Insurance Shop around The Association of British Insurers (ABI) reckons you can save as much as a third on your annual premium, simply by shopping around. So don’t just automatically accept your renewal quote each year. Limit the number of people allowed to drive the car The more people who are covered by a policy, the more it’s likely to cost. Young drivers are particularly expensive to insure, so make sure you remember to take your kids off your policy when they get their own. Keep your car garaged. Keeping your car in a garage or on a drive rather than out on the road can take between 5 and 10 per cent off your premium. Improve your driving skills A Pass Plus driving test, or similar qualification, can cut the cost of your premium. Think about the distance you drive Before buying car insurance, think carefully about how far you really drive in your vehicle each year. If it’s possible for you to agree to a lower annual mileage cap than you did last time you bought insurance, it’s possible you’ll save money. This is an especially helpful tip for two car families, where one vehicle is likely to do more miles in a year than the other - but where this sometimes isn’t obvious until both cars’ odometers are checked. Bro Mick Cook, Bro Jim Roy roh two trustees went to Aldi in Long Eaton to pick up and pay for six hundred and fifty pounds worth of food for our charity The Food Bank Long Eaton. On the way there my wife Dame Linda Roy roh of the ladies glade who come under our banner said she would check the church to make sure it was the right place. Gluten Free - Spanish orange and almond cake

Made with whole oranges – simmered until very tender and then finely chopped – and ground almonds, this classic Spanish cake has a moist, light texture and a wonderful fresh flavour.

Ingredients Serves: 10 2 oranges, about 280 g (10 oz) in total, scrubbed and roughly chopped (with skin)

5 eggs, separated 200 g (7 oz) caster sugar 225 g (8 oz) ground almonds 2 tbsp flaked almonds sifted icing sugar to decorate

Method Prep:1hr › Cook:55min › Ready in:1hr55min Place the chopped oranges in a small saucepan, (discard any pips). Add 1 tbsp water, then cover and cook gently for 30 minutes or until the oranges are soft and excess liquid has evaporated. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 180ºC (350ºF, gas mark 4). Line the bottom and sides of a 23 cm (9 in) springform cake tin with baking parchment. Finely chop the oranges in a food processor or blender, or with a large knife. Put the egg whites in a large bowl and whisk until they form stiff peaks. Gradually whisk in half the caster sugar, then whisk for 1 minute. Using the same whisk, whisk the egg yolks with the remaining caster sugar in another bowl for 2–3 minutes or until pale and quite thick. Whisk in the finely chopped oranges, then carefully fold in the ground almonds. Stir in 3 spoonfuls of the whisked egg white to loosen the mixture, then gently fold in the remaining whites with a large metal spoon. Transfer the mixture to the prepared tin and level the top. Sprinkle with the flaked almonds. Bake for 50–55 minutes or until the cake is golden and a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Check the cake after 20 minutes and again at 30 minutes, and cover lightly with foil if it is browning too quickly. Leave the cake to cool in the tin, then turn it out, peel away the lining paper and transfer to a serving plate. Dust with icing sugar before serving. The cake can be kept in an airtight tin for up to 2 days.

Lunch box nutrition Pack a school lunch with a healthy punch for your kids with these healthy lunch box tips and lunch recipes that beat cheese and potted beef sandwiches any day. Making lunch every day of the school year can be tiresome for mothers (and kids) so remember to mix up your menus and keep trying out fresh ideas to keep your child interested in the healthy treats you're tucking inside their lunch box. Sandwiches can get very boring, but you can mix things up by using different breads like pitta, wholemeal bread rolls, wraps, rice cakes, English muffins, crispbreads and cracker biscuits with a mix of nutritious fillings. Why not try: A sliced boiled egg wrapped in cling wrap along with some lettuce leaves to build your sandwich when you are ready to eat it Leftover roast meat with grated carrot, chopped lettuce and chutney or tomato sauce Grated cheese and chopped celery, or carrot Cream cheese and sultanas Chopped up veggie sticks, also known as crudités, are great for the lunch box because kids eat them without even realising it,” can make anything interesting by just adding a novelty factor. Put some Philadelphia cream cheese inside a celery stick or put three strawberries on a skewer. Make something that’s fun to pull out of their lunch box,In fact, Gare believes that adding fruit skewers to the lunch box menu is a proven way to get kids to eat fruit, “especially if there is a surprise in the middle, like a marshmellow try putting together- half an apple and half an orange stuck together. The orange keeps the apple from discolouring, and the kids delight in the oddity of two fruits in one!

Lunchbox safety Parents also need to prepare food safely to make sure bacteria don’t get into lunches, thereby avoiding the growth and contamination of food poisoning bacteria. Before handling food, wash hands with soap and warm running water and dry thoroughly. Lunch boxes should also be washed thoroughly before reuse. Children should also be encouraged to always wash their hands before eating.Foods that are prepared the night before, such as sandwiches, should be frozen overnight and then taken out for each day’s school lunch. Suitable foods to freeze are: bread, cooked meat, cheese. Choosing an insulated lunch box or one with a freezer pack, or including a wrapped frozen water bottle can work to keep perishable foods cooler and avoid bacteria growing.Perishable foods such as dairy products, eggs and sliced meats should be kept cool, and eaten within four hours of preparation. Don’t pack these foods if you’ve just cooked them - first cool in the refrigerator overnight. If including leftover meals such as meats, pasta and rice dishes, ensure you pack a frozen ice block into the lunch box. Healthy drinks, such as water and milk can be frozen overnight and then stored in your child’s lunchbox, helping to keep it cold. Make sure that while at school children keep their lunches in cool places and away from direct sunlight. If possible, prepare the lunch the night before and store it in the refrigerator.Lunch foods that can be safely stored in an uncooled lunch box and eaten at room temperature include fruits and vegetable, jams, breads, crackers, cereals, peanut butter (check your school allows it), biscuits and cakes.

Money Saving Tips Stop washing your dishes: Think you are saving water and energy by washing your dishes by hand? Think again. Modern dishwashers use less energy and water, as long as you remember to only wash full loads of dishes, turn down the hot water temperature, and skip the drying cycle. Leave the door ajar instead and let your dishes air dry to save money. Get energy efficient appliances: If you are purchasing any new appliances buying the energy efficient one will save you loads. By replacing a 10 year-old fridge-freezer with amodern, energy efficient A-rated appliance you can save up to approx.£45 a year. Buy all seasonal products after the holiday for the following year: While you’re fighting your way through the January sales, you should also pick up wrapping paper and anything else you might need for the next Christmas as it will often be less than half the price. The same goes for pretty much any holiday or sales event.

NEW PENSION FREEDOMS – EVERYONE SHOULD BE TAKING STEPS NOW New flexibility means anyone over 55 can take all their savings in cash, either all at once or as and when they need it. We need to raise awareness of what is likely to be a growing problem as hundreds of thousands of 55 plus savers gain access to pension lump sums. Also, the Flat Rate State Pension comes into operation in April 2016 and full details will be explained during the courses. We are a partner with the Pensions Service (Department for Work and Pensions) and any new legislation will be explained in full during the courses. We aim to keep the courses very friendly and informal with an emphasis on the psychological approach to retirement and how to occupy the extra hours of leisure people will experience in retirement. Many people sleep-walk into retirement and spend more time planning a fortnight’s holiday than their retirement which could last a good 30 odd years or so. If ever the nation needed a wake-up call, then this is it. During the course, each delegate will be able to have a 1:1 with the speakers and also full updates will be given in relation to all the new regulations, together with calculations on the date men and women will receive their State Pension. This course will be particularly helpful for women born between April and July 1953 as by bringing forward the new flat rate state pension to 2016, they will be better off. A 3 course buffet lunch will be provided, plus tea/coffee/biscuits on arrival and during the morning and afternoon breaks. A full pack of information, leaflets, booklets and magazines/newspapers will be provided to take home and refer to after retirement and hand-outs will be provided by each speaker. Places will need to be booked in advance as a charge will be made to cover lunches and admin. costs. Telephone NDPRC on 0115 922 3824, mobile 07790 851 584 or visit the website to book a place on line www.ndprc.org.uk Next courses take place on 21 – 23 September, then monthly thereafter. The Stapleford and District U3A continues to grow. We now have over sixty members and ten interest groups, which include gardens, walking, and singing. We have already had interesting speakers, the most recent being a local person who spoke on the life of bees; a fascinating insight. We were also told of the worrying decline in bee numbers and encouraged to grow flowers in our gardens or tubs to help in the preservation of bees. In the months leading up to Christmas our speakers will include someone from the Red Cross, and a one time member of the local council. There is enough variation in both the type of groups at the U3A and the speakers’ subjects to be able to please everyone. As usual our monthly meetings are held in the Methodist Church on Eatons Road, Stapleford, on the first Wednesday of the month from 2-4pm. If you want to meet new people have some fun and take up a new interest come along and join us.

Access -Regrettably unsuitable for wheelchairs. Calke Abbey- Heritage Open Day National Trust, Calke Abbey, Ticknall, Derby, Derbyshire, DE73 7LE Calke Abbey tells the story of the dramatic decline of the Harpur-Crewe’s grand country house. Little has been done to restore the house and stables and they are preserved in the condition found when the National Trust began caring for Calke. Grand rooms are crammed full of collections from art to natural history which contrast with abandoned rooms and objects no longer used. The stables have overgrown courtyards and peeling paintwork and are great for exploring. The gardens are beautiful and full of flowers, plants and produce throughout the year. Faded garden buildings such as the Orangery and unique Auricula Theatre hint at the former fortunes and passions of the family. The pleasure grounds are great for strolls and you can discover the grotto and the ice house or find a spot for a peaceful picnic. The adventurous can discover the ancient and fragile habitats of Calke Park and its National Nature Reserve, a haven for wildlife. You can explore Limeyards and wetlands or ancient trees and ponds and enjoy a variety of walks in 243 hectares (600 acres) of parkland. The archives of the Harpur-Crewe family will return home for this year’s heritage weekend. Come along and view original records of those who lived and worked at Calke. The archives will be in the Learning Room on Sat 12 Sept 12001600 and on Sunday 13 Sept. 1200-1600. Book Review by Clare Lyons Running by Ronnie O’Sullivan Well, it’s hard to know what to say… There are many aspects of O’Sullivan’s life that have caught the public interest and this book could have been extremely interesting – his fathers’ spell in prison, Ronnie’s mental health problems, his incredible sporting talent and his passion for running – however this book doesn’t really capture the pace of his life and becomes very repetitive. It certainly wasn’t written by a ghost writer, which in this instance is perhaps a shame as they may have been able to create a more readable version. That’s not to say that it’s not worth a read, if you have any fascination with the topics mentioned the book is painfully honest and insightful. O’Sullivan has certainly had a colourful life, especially as he is still relatively young and the book explains a number of things that were going on behind the scenes which make his often erratic behaviour more understandable. I was certainly unaware of many of the changes taking place in world snooker and the impact they had on players. The book would have benefitted from a better editor, but if you are a sports fan it may be for you. O’Sullivan has an alternative autobiography available but this was written before Running. Children‛s Choice A Gold Star for George by Alice Hemming We really loved this, the illustrations by Kimberley Scott are quite charming, and George is a very loveable character. The book explores the problems of competition, the unfairness that sometimes happens and how we may have skills or talents that are important but not necessarily obvious. It’s a great story for any age, but was particularly useful when children start pre-school or reception and start to consider their ‘place’ in the group or think about their unique qualities. We just happened to read it after sports day – which was excellent timing! Don’t worry – George does get a Star by the end of the story…

Message from Stapleford Community Group. A new initiative called ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ has been rolled out nationally to help reduce the £12.5 billion of food waste each year. It is estimated that households could be throwing away £60 in food waste each month. We all do it: buy too much, use half a tub of something and forget about the rest. Thus we create food waste. A new initiative called ‘Love Food Hate Waste‘ has been rolled out nationally to help reduce the £12.5 billion of food waste each year. It is estimated that households could be throwing away £60 a month in food waste each month. This initiative is offering a fully funded half day training session in Stapleford to community and social organisations who want to take an active role in reducing food waste. We have space for 20 people to attend the session which is currently being organised to be held at the Washington Drive Community Centre. If you are interested in taking part please contact: staplefordcommunitygroup@gmail.com Once you have attended a Training Session it is expected that you will actively spread the message to others and become part of a dedicated group on Facebook and receive a monthly newsletter. This initiative is part of the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and more information can be found at:www.lovefoodhatewaste.com Everyone who attends will receive a certificate. Bank account fraud - what you should know. Bank account fraud has occurred if transactions you haven’t made show up on your bank statement. Bank account fraud could happen as a result of identity theft, when cards or bank account information has been stolen. Protect yourself against identity fraud Don’t throw out anything with your name, address or financial details without shredding it first. If you receive an unsolicited email or phone call from what appears to be your bank or building society asking for your security details, never reveal your full password, login details or account numbers. Most banks will not approach their customers in this manner. If you are concerned about the source of a call, ask the caller to give you a main switchboard number for you to be routed back to them. Alternatively, hang up and call your bank back on the legitimate phone number printed on your bank statements. Check your statements carefully and report anything suspicious to the financial institution concerned. If you’re expecting a bank or credit card statement and it doesn’t arrive, tell your bank or credit card company. Don’t leave things like bills lying around for others to look at. If you move house, always get Royal Mail to redirect your post. Get regular copies of your credit report from a credit reference agency. Notify your bank immediately if you see any unusual activity on your account. 17/08/2015 15:51

If fraud has been committed, contact Action Fraud.

The Erewash Valley Cycling Club is launching a summer recruitment drive to mark its 35th anniversary. New members of all ages and abilities are being sought to boost numbers on the club's Wednesday and Sunday runs. "Our midweek social rides are aimed at older and retired folk who want to enjoy a gentle ride in good company," says organising secretary Malcolm Griffin. "Sunday riders have a choice of short or long runs depending on their abilities... and nobody gets left behind!" Most rides use cycle tracks, canal towpaths and quiet roads where possible, though some riding in traffic is inevitable. "We would like to see more women joining the club, particularly the Wednesday section," adds Malcolm.
