NOTE FROM THE EDITOR An article last month which was featured in The Grapevine magazine regarding the church bells at St Helens Church and other Churches up and down the country to ring out at various times to commemorate WW1, was courtesy of the Incite Community Magazine St Helens Church. Many thanks to them. I personally have a keen interest in history and WW1, two anscestors of mine have their names on the War Memorial in Ilkeston market place, both were brothers and died within one year of each other, one was only 18 years of age, and also their father died at home in Ilkeston just after his first son got killed, I cannot imagine the pain and horror that family went through losing three members, (and of course families are still losing their loved ones through war). I recently found old films and documentaries whilst surfing the internet on the British Pathe website, a fantastic website showing footage of not only WW1 but WW2, and lots of local history events, old football games in Nottingham, old boxing events, and so on, too many to mention, (over 90,000!) but amazing! have a look www.britishpathe.com. Until next time

INDOOR MEETINGS PROGRAMME 2014-2015

Trent Vale Infants School, Trent Road, Beeston Rylands, Nottinghamshire, NG9 1LP. TIME: 7.30 - 9.30pm. ADMISSION : £2.00 Adults, £1.00 Children - includes refreshments Sept 15th 2014

DOLPHINS Robert Alan-Haven Anyone who has had an encounter with dolphins will know how exhilarating it can be. Their seeming joy of living somehow transfuses through us, lifting our spirits. Robert has swum with dolphins and researched their behaviour for many years and delights in telling of his experiences.

Oct 20th 2014 GOLDEN EAGLE FUTURES Dr Alan Fielding The majesty of a soaring Golden Eagle makes it a sought after bird to see. Unfortunately, they are still persecuted by some landowners. Alan advises the British and Irish governments on how to protect these birds and tells us about their lifestyles and how it’s not just humans who upset them! Nov 17th 2014 IN PRAISE OF TREES Dr Patrick Harding Patrick explains which of our trees are native and how different timber has been used for making all manner of objects. Some trees are steeped in superstition, some grow where worshippers gather. We’ll learn how to identify and manage them and why most living things depend on them. Dec 15th 2014 BIRD MISIDENTIFICATION Dr Tim Melling Tim works for the RSPB and frequently gets requests to identify mystery birds. Some of the descriptions and situations are truly hilarious. This talk will send you away with a smile. You will never think you are poor bird watcher after this evening! Mince pies as usual - as it is Christmas. Jan 19th 2015 DERBYSHIRE MAMMALS Debbie Alston There are some surprising mammal species in our adjoining county and Debbie is an authority on them and co-author of a book on the subject. We’ll look at the distribution and status of animals as diverse as mice to deer and wallabies to wild boar. Might some cross the border and visit us? Feb 23rd 2015 ETHIOPIA Paul Bingham Sadly this East African country is remembered for the famine in 1984. It is a beautiful country with lakes, mountains and its own Rift Valley. Civilisation is believed to have started here. Ethiopia teems with history and wildlife, with hundreds of different species of birds, reptiles and mammals. March 16th 2015 THE SHETLAND ISLES David Tolliday Britain’s most northerly islands are rich with wildlife; we’ll see birds, insects, mammals and plants. The islands are remote and rugged; anything living up here needs to be tough. David’s superb photography captures the real ‘feel’ of the place, we will also enjoy some evocative sounds. April 20th 2015 GIVING BIRDS A HELPING HAND Dr David Parkin David returns to tell us of even more species that have become near-extinct, but due to remarkable efforts of dedicated enthusiasts and scientists, they have returned from the brink. Fascinating stories of chance findings, good and bad luck and human intervention are expertly woven. This meeting includes our brief AGM and is dedicated to our founder Keith Corbett.

Ruth Langsford urges Nottinghamshire residents to fight dementia together Ruth Langsford, presenter of ITV’s This Morning and Loose Women, is asking Nottinghamshire residents to put on their walking shoes and take part inMemory Walk 2014, Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. The Nottinghamshire Memory Walk will take place on Saturday 20th September at Wollaton Park. Ruth is encouraging families and individuals from Nottinghamshire to step out for a few hours and raise money to help support people with dementia and their carers. Walkers will be entertained by the Boots Band and various fundraising stalls making it a fun day out for the whole family. Ruth, who is an Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador will be walking for her Dad, Dennis. She said: ‘I take part in Memory Walk every year as a tribute to my wonderful Dad, who had dementia for 17 years and passed away in 2012. Raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society is vital to help support people living with dementia and their carers today and to fund research to find a cure once and for all. I’ve done the walks in rain and shine and they’re always lovely, because you’re united by a common cause. I would encourage everyone in Nottinghamshire to sign up to Memory Walk today and bring the whole family along to share the experience.’

Danielle Hindle, Community Fundraiser from Alzheimer’s Society in Nottinghamshire said: ‘Memory Walk is a day to walk, share and celebrate someone special. From a four year old to their 80 year old gran and her dog Memory Walk sees whole families coming together to fight dementia. There will be an array of food stalls to

choose from and we are very lucky to have members of the Boots Band performing, making it a great day out for everyone who takes part.’ To register for the Memory Walk visit memorywalk.org.uk /nottingham

STAPLEFORD SUMMER COMMUNITY CLEAN AND RECYCLE EVENT

Stapleford was the focus of this year’s summer community clean event last week as residents joined forces with Council employees and contractors in the Tevery Close/Copeland Avenue area. Local young people were also invited to join in with the activities and accompany the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Stan Heptinstall MBE on a litter picking walk. The event was organised by Broxtowe Borough Council to help support residents to take pride in their local area and to keep their neighbourhood clean. A Swap-Shop was also available on the day to reduce the number of unwanted items being thrown away as waste. Residents are invited to come along to exchange or donate unwanted items of household furniture which others can use. A skip was available for residents to dispose of household and garden waste and a team of caretakers assisted residents in the area to move and dispose of bulky items.

Information stands for services in the borough and information and advice on keeping your home safe were also available on the day from the Fire and Rescue and Nottinghamshire Police services. For more information about the clean-up contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3358 or email sarah.bird@broxtowe.gov.uk

Members of the local community help out with the Clean Up event.

The big clean-up coincided with environmental improvements including hedge and grass cutting, a window cleaning service on the flats at Copeland Avenue and block cleaning and clearances. 46

SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL STUDENT JOURNALISM AWARD Laura Hough, who graduated on Wednesday 23rd July 2014 from the Nottingham Trent University Department of Broadcasting and Journalism, is this year's winner of Soroptimist International Nottingham’s Student Award for Journalism. To enter the award, students were asked to submit an audio or video presentation which highlighted issues which have a potentially detrimental effect on the lives and aspirations of vulnerable young women in today’s Britain. Submissions included forced marriage, anorexia nervosa, laddish humour and its effect on the victims of rape. Laura’s project was an audio presentation on the theme of Female Genital Mutilation. Despite being illegal in the UK since 2003, it is estimated that more than 20,000 girls a year are at risk of this violation. "I am very proud to have done this project,” explained Laura. “It was difficult at times, but I am pleased to have helped in raising awareness of this issue". The aim of the award, donated by SI Nottingham, is to raise students’ awareness of women’s issues in the media, as well as being aware of the key values of Soroptimism that all women and girls should achieve their individual and collective potential. 50

As the standard was so high this year, it was decided to award a runner up to the award. Kelly Petterssen was nominated for her hard hitting project about the fate of Girls in Gangs, based in Nottingham. SI Nottingham would like to thank all staff in the department of Broadcasting and Journalism for their support for this award, in particular Academic Team Leader Carole Fleming and Dr Emma Hemmingway, Senior Lecturer in Broadcast Journalism. To hear the winning and runner-up presentations please visit www.sigbi. org/nottingham/award

Care and Support at Home – Supporting vulnerable people during a heatwave

The heatwave plan for England 2013 (which this article is based on) describes the Heatwave Alert service which operates from 1 June to 15 September each year. The alert service comprises five main levels (Levels 0-4) which are based on an average threshold temperature of 30C during the day and 15C overnight. Level 3 has been reached this month. Primo Sule Home Instead Severe heat is dangerous to everyone. During a heatwave, Senior Care when temperatures remain abnormally high over more 0115 9226116 than a couple of days, it can prove fatal. At Home Instead Senior Care we have now issued specific advice to our CAREGivers regarding steps to take during the current heatwave. We believe that these steps will minimise the risks from the heatwave and ensure that the health and well-being of people we look after is not compromised. Some of the advice consists of common sense precautions but there are also practical hints and tips which are applicable to everybody regardless of age or state of health. You will find part of this advice below. How to keep out the heat • Keep curtains on windows exposed to the sun closed while the temperature outside is higher than it is inside. • Once the temperature outside has dropped lower than it is inside, open the windows. This might require late night visiting so it needs to be balanced by any possible security concerns • Water external and internal plants, and spray the ground outside windows with water to help cool the air however, avoid creating slip hazards • Advise the person to stay out of the sun, especially between the hours of 11:00am and 3.00pm • Advise them to stay in the shade and wear hats, sunscreen, thin scarves and light clothing if going outside. How to keep body temperatures down • Ensure that the person reduces their levels of physical exertion • Suggest that they take regular cool showers or baths, or at least an overall body wash • Advise them to wear light, loose cotton clothes to absorb sweat and prevent skin irritation 58

Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.

• Suggest that they sprinkle their clothes with water regularly, and splash cool water on their face and the back of their neck. A damp cloth on the back of the neck helps temperature regulation. • Recommend cold food, particularly salads and fruit with a high water content • Advise to drink regularly, preferably water or fruit juice but avoid alcohol and caffeine (tea, coffee)) • Keep some cold water in the fridge. If you are visiting somebody, put some water in the fridge when you arrive and leave it within reach when you leave I trust that this advice will help you and anybody you look after or care for stay cool and healthy during a hot spell. Book Review by Clare Lyons The Stars Tennis Balls by Stephen Fry

The last book review reminded me how much I enjoy Stephen Fry’s fictional writing. He has a great style and humour which comes across well in his unusual and often challenging storylines. It was hard to pick one in particular, but having already mentioned Making History this is perhaps my next favourite. It is an amazing romp through the life of Ned, a talented high-flyer who falls from grace after a shocking prank goes wrong and he spends time in prison. The experience so changes Ned that the vengeful and brooding character that emerges is hard to reconcile with the fun loving character we first encounter. The story is actually quite dark in places, but with enough humour and outrageous characters to be extremely readable and quite unforgettable. The basic storyline is based on the Count of Monte Cristo, with a modern twist. Fry makes some very damning (and hilarious) comments on the Upper Classes and although the story has nothing to do with tennis, like most of his books it’s well worth a read. All of Fry’s books are available as audio books, and most are read by Fry himself which makes them all the more enjoyable – perhaps a good idea for long journeys in the car or as a download for going walking over the Summer…

Children‛s Choice Jaspers Beanstalk by Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen

This is a combination made in heaven for children’s literature as both men stand alone as truly excellent and prolific authors, we were drawn to the Jasper books by the hilarious illustration but the stories are good enough to keep our attention and to make us read more of them . Jasper is a quirky and fun cat – and this book is all about patience, something that the all the members of our family struggle with at times. It’s great to have a story about waiting for good things to happen as this is such a difficult skill for young children to learn. At this time of year it’s also nice to have a gardening book as keeping the kids occupied during the Summer break may well involve a lot of planting and watering.
