NEW : Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”.
THIS MONTH- Emojis: Hieroglyphics for the 21st Century By Emma Snow What is emoji language I hear you ask? Well for those that don’t know, emojis allow users to express their feelings through symbols. Emoji language is something that the majority of young people use every day, thanks to Apple who made emojis particularly popular. On every social media website, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat, emojis are everywhere, making emoji usage pretty much unavoidable whether you like it or not. Are we stepping backwards with our language, because of the increasing and over use of emojis? Today, in language
18
we do use abbreviations and shortened versions of words, including creating new words like ‘Selfie’. We certainly don’t write masterpieces with beautiful language like Shakespeare, but times have changed. However, perhaps emojis add a whole new meaning to sentences, especially when chatting to friends and family over text or social media. It is so easy to become trapped into using one emoji to reply to a sentence, with all the variations, there is an emoji to enable the user to express their feelings. Emojis are an advancement in some ways, as technology has allowed emoji usage to become popular, but in terms of language, it is a step backwards but somehow adds something more to our messages. A message or statement without an emoji at the end to finish the sentence, can sometimes not imply the meaning enough. For example, if a sarcastic message is sent or received, the message could come across as being nasty without a ‘winking face emoji’. That is what messaging has become. Statistics show ‘72% of 18- to 25-yearolds find it easier to express their feelings in emoji pictures than through the written word’. In some ways this is true.

GRAPEVINE-NG9 Dec/Jan MAIN 2016.indd 18
11/12/2015 17:10
The emoji represents the statement you are making, and helps add to the meaning. Maybe we are losing the fact that language can be crafted in a way that portrays what we actually want to say, without having to use an emoji to justify the specific meaning, or by using just one emoji to show an emotion, are we being lazy?
It could be argued that emojis have had a negative effect on us. Emojis aren’t a step back as such. They haven’t completely taken over our language, as that would be slang. Emoji usage has just enhanced it. We use these in a casual manner; no one would write a job application and insert a few emojis. Emojis are there for a fun. Language is there to be crafted in a way so that we can use words and not emojis to create meaning. It could be suggested that emojis have a close link to hieroglyphics, as this was an actual language used by the Egyptians to represent letters and words. Emojis enhance our messages and can represent how we feel, they don’t replace our letters. But everyone will have their own opinion on the new-fangled way of communicating.

New Tree Edges Broxtowe Closer To 100,000 Target A new tree planted at Beeston Town Hall (Friday 4th December) has edged Broxtowe Borough Council one step closer to its 100,000 tree planting target by 2016. Tree Planting Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw assisted members of Beeston and District Civic Society in planting a Birch tree in the Town Hall grounds. The tree has been generously donated by the Society as a replacement for a dying lime tree and it is hoped the Birch will establish before the lime has to be removed. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economic Development, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Civic Society for donating this tree and they are just one of the local community groups and schools that we have worked with over the past few years to support tree planting in the borough. Protecting and enhancing the environment is a priority for the Council and I am so pleased that we have nearly reached our 100,000 target." Barbara Selwood from Beeston and District Civic Society said: "We are always happy to support tree planting initiatives and it is with great pleasure that the Society has had the opportunity to donate a tree which will be for the benefit of the people of Beeston. We suggested that a native species was chosen, preferably that has some visual interest as well as being a good habitat for wildlife. We are very proud to be contributing to Broxtowe Borough Council's target of 100,000 trees." The Council's Parks and Open Spaces team is already developing plans for their next project to improve the green spaces in the Borough.

On a Mission in Nepal Leprosy is a bacterial disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae – a relative of the TB bacillus. It is essentially a disease of poverty. A quarter of a million cases are diagnosed globally each year. More than three million live with irreversible disabilities (e.g. blindness) as a result of late treatment. Throughout history, sufferers have been stigmatized, with entire families robbed of job opportunities, education and marriage prospects; dreams are shattered.

The Leprosy Mission supports tens of thousands of affected individuals each year. It helps to diagnose and treat the condition, to improve living conditions and to rehabilitate those who have lost the means to support themselves. It establishes a springboard to restored health, self-sufficiency and renewed hope. Its services are provided regardless of religion or ethnicity, promoting equality and social justice. April and May this year saw a devastating earthquake in Nepal where the Leprosy Mission runs one of the country’s largest hospitals. Thousands were killed, at least 23,000 injured. Fortunately the hospital survived and continues to function. Through its ‘Brick by Brick’ appeal, The Leprosy Mission now aims to help rebuild those hospitals, schools and villages flattened by the earthquake so that survivors can pick up their lives once more. Please help by joining us on January 23rd 2016 at our ‘60s Night’.

‘Silver Ducks Away 2016’ The 25th Annual Duck race will take place on Friday 1st January 2016 at Manor Park Toton. Starting at 2.00pm. 2016 will see an extra attraction for race goers. To celebrate our ‘Silver Jubilee’ we are incorporating a treasure hunt. Local businesses in Long Eaton, Sawley, Beeston, Chilwell,Stapleford, Breaston and Draycott have come on board to make this a really special event. They are sponsoring a silver duck which will be displayed somewhere on the premises, maybe in the window. The Silver Ducks will proudly display their name, chosen by the individual business and families will be invited to join the treasure hunt to spot and list all of the ducks names. We will be distributing the treasure hunt forms at all of the Christmas light switch on’s in the various areas. Forms can also be obtained by looking at our web site, duckracetoton. It’s free and will be great fun. Families will have the whole of December to find the ducks and the treasure hunt closing date is January 14th. The prizes are £50, £30and £20. On the day of the Duck Race we will be racing the ‘corporate’ ducks, those that businesses have sponsored and the winning business will receive a bottle of champagne. Angela Barnes, Duck race Co-ordinator said” The Duck Race is a great local tradition and celebrating our 25th race is a great milestone. We are grateful to all local business for getting on board and supporting the charity and to all residents who always support us by attending on the day. We are hoping for another successful day and look forward to seeing our regular supporters and new race goers who might be there for the first time” Further details: Angela Barnes 0115 917 6337 or Mob: 07973 753046

New Year What to do with leftover Turkey?
Turkey & Ham Pie Ingredients 30g/1oz butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 275ml/10fl oz double cream 100ml/3½fl oz chicken or turkey stock 450g/1lb mushrooms, sliced 1 tbsp tarragon or marjoram, chopped 675g/1lb 5oz cooked turkey and ham, cut into 2cm chunks For the mashed potato 1.2kg/2½lb potatoes knob of butter 1 free-range egg yolk 3 tbsp milk salt and freshly ground black pepper Method Preheat the oven to 180C/360F/Gas 4. In a saucepan large enough to hold all the meat, melt the butter and add the chopped onion. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and cook, without browning, on a gentle heat for 8-10 minutes, until the onions are completely soft. Add the cream and stock and bring up to the boil and simmer for a few minutes to thicken.
32
Meanwhile, in a separate frying pan, heat the mushrooms with a knob of butter (you might need to do this in two batches) for 3-4 minutes, or until soft and golden brown. Add tarragon or majoram to the mushrooms and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the meat and the mushrooms and stir well. For the mashed potato, place the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water and cook until soft. Drain the potatoes and return them to the saucepan. Mash roughly and then add the butter, egg yolk and milk and mash to a thick paste. Season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the cream, mushroom and meat mixture into a shallow gratin dish and top with the mashed potato. Place in the oven for about 20-30 minutes until the potato topping is golden brown and the filling is hot.

Health & Well Being Banish Emotional Clutter! When my brother was in his late teen he would go to bed at night with a maths text book under his arm, which he would study avidly until the early hours of the morning. His unusual choice of bedtime reading reflected his passion for a subject he would later study at University, and use to launch his career. Imagine my surprise then, when he confided in me recently that he hadn’t looked at a maths book for years, and that he didn’t intend to do so in the future. There was no hint of regret – instead he seemed accepting of the fact that his love affair with maths was over, and that now was the time to do something different. Many of us give our homes a good clean and clear out at least once a year, but what we may not realise is that our own lives need a periodic clear out too, to get rid of damaging spiritual or emotional clutter that might cause us stress or unhappiness, and prevent us from making the most of our lives. Clutter is anything that we no longer have a use for, that we no longer like or love, or that has become totally disorganised. Because our lives are constantly changing, new experiences, interests, people and ideas may enter whilst others may leave. To make room
36
for the new things, it’s important to have an occasional clear out of the old that we no longer have a use for. We all experience negative feelings from time to time – possibly feelings of low selfesteem, failure, sadness, loneliness or worry that could be associated with events from our past. If we don’t deal with these feelings they could fester and grow, and become destructive to our wellbeing and our ability to move forward. We must get rid of useless emotional clutter that won’t make room for happy thoughts and feelings. Think back over the past year or two. Identify the most painful experience you’ve had. What was the event or mistake that led to it? When you think of this today, what feelings does it trigger in you? If the memory still evokes negative emotions get rid of them, by first acknowledging that this thing happened, forgive yourself for any part you played in the event, and finally release it from your heart and your mind. In ridding ourselves of our emotional clutter, no matter how hard this may seem, the outcome is usually bright. We enjoy more energy, a renewed enthusiasm and zest for life, clearer priorities, and a better understanding of ourselves, and what is important to us as we move on to the next stage of our lives. SCHOOLCHILDREN SPREAD FESTIVE CHEER WITH CAROLS School children from Round Hill Primary School brought some festive cheer to Beeston yesterday as they paid a special visit to the Council OďŹƒces to entertain visitors and employees with a Christmas Carol Concert. The children from Years 5 and 6 sang a range of well-known Christmas songs including Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, White Christmas, Away in A Manger and Silent Night for a packed audience, with mince pies and squash on oer afterwards.
Santa also made a surprise appearance to watch the performances and give the children a goodie bag as a thank you for helping him spread the Christmas spirit. Support available from your Gas, Electricity or Water Supplier How to benefit from joining the Priority Services Registers offered by your utility supplier. These are free services. What is a Priority Services Register? A Priority Services Register is a free scheme offered by your gas, electricity and water suppliers. Once you register you can receive additional support and special services from each of your suppliers. It's the extra help you need. Registering ensures your supplier tailors their services to meet your needs, for example by providing you with extra help in using your meter. Many of the services offered are free. Who can join the free Priority Services Registers? You can be added to a Priority Service Register if you are: of pensionable age; disabled; chronically sick; blind or partially sighted; deaf or hearing impaired. If your supplier knows you have health issues or essential medical equipment in your home you will be prioritised in the event of a break to your supply. How else can your supplier help you? The exact services on offer to you vary depending on your supplier, but may include the following services:1.advance notice if your supply is going to be interrupted.
46
2.priority reconnection if your supply is interrupted 3.alternative facilities for cooking and heating if your supply is interrupted 4.bills sent to a relative, carer or friend to help you check them 5.your meter moved free of charge if it's hard for you to use or read the meter 6.a free quarterly meter reading if you can't read your meter 7.annual gas safety checks 8.free advice on being more energy -efficient 9.protection from cold callers with a password protection scheme to keep you safe 10.your bills and meter readings in braille, large print, audio tape, textphone or typetalk if you're visually impaired 11.extra help to use your meter or appliances For some of the above, customers may need to be means tested. How do I register for Priority Services? If you wish to sign up for the service you need to contact each of your suppliers as they each hold their own customer list. If you decide to change your gas or electric supplier you will have to re-register
with the new companies.
Can I sign up a relative? It is possible to help relatives sign up to Priority Services Register, especially those who may find it difficult to register for a new service, but the customer themselves will need to be present during the phone call.

........................................................................................................................................... Patients urged to order repeat prescriptions in time for Christmas and New Year. Health leaders in Nottinghamshire advising patients not to leave it too late to order and collect repeat prescriptions this Christmas. Running out of daily medication over the festive period could have serious consequences for patients who rely on them to control heart and breathing problems. Many GP practices will have limited opening hours during the Christmas holidays and the majority of pharmacies will also be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Dr Guy Mansford, GP and chief clinical officer for NHS Nottingham West Clinical Commissioning Group said: “ The busy festive period can make it difficult to remember the important, everyday things such as ordering repeat prescriptions. This is especially important, as those with long term conditions rely on their prescribed medication to help them keep their condition under control. It's important to order repeat prescriptions at least a week in advance so that the festive season can be enjoyed in good health”. People are also being advised to double check that they are prepared with sufficient over-the-counter remedies so that minor illnesses and injuries can be managed at home. Local pharmacies can provide useful advice and deal with minor ailments without people having to see their GP about winter bugs like coughs, colds, sore throats, stomach upsets and flu.

for the disabled or those with pushchairs.”
Councils are to begin issuing penalty notices to Nottinghamshire motorists who park their cars across dropped kerbs.
Tickets will be issued from Monday, December 14, and fines will be set at £70, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.
Nottinghamshire County Council says local district council officers will be given the power start issuing the fines from Monday, December 14.
The council added a vehicle does not have to be fully obstructing the crossing point area to get a ticket.
Peter Goode, the authority’s traffic manager, said: “Dropped kerbs are provided to help pedestrians cross the road, enable wheelchairs to pass from footway to carriageway and help visually impaired and blind people to know which direction to take. “Any part of a vehicle encroaching into the crossing area can create an obstruction.” Action will focus on giving penalty charge notices to vehicles that are obstructing pedestrian crossing points.
A civil enforcement officer can issue a penalty charge notice if any part of the vehicle is blocking the area. The Highway Code already advises drivers not to stop or park where a kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility scooters. Nottingham City Council already penalises drivers for parking on dropped kerb crossings. By Chris Breese, Notts TV and Stapleford Community Group
These often include lowered kerbs or raised carriageway to create a smooth crossing. Mr Goode added: “These crossing points are essential to assist all pedestrians when crossing the road and they are particularly important To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk GRAPEVINE-NG9 Dec/Jan MAIN 2016.indd 49

Note from Stapleford Councillors Stapleford Councillors have taken the decision to combine all Stapleford CATs into one. This means that the Stapleford North CAT organised for 8 October is now cancelled, this was partially due to Pastures Road Community Church not being available. It is planned that meetings will be held at different venues when they are available but Councillors felt that the Meeting Place is fairly central. All 6 Broxtowe Borough Councillors have been invited to attend the meetings. Councillors want to work together to serve Stapleford better. There will be 4 meetings held over the year, the dates for these are: Thursday 21st January 2016 · Thursday 21st January Thursday 21st April 2016 · Thursday 21st April Thursday 21st July 2016 · Thursday 21st July Thursday 20th October 2016 · Thursday 20th October Sent on behalf of Stapleford Councillors - Richard MacRae - Stapleford Community Group

TRAINING PARTNERSHIP SECURES APPRENTICESHIP FOR STUDENT A LOCAL STUDENT has secured an apprenticeship thanks to a training partnership between Broxtowe Borough Council and its construction partner, United Living and Central College Nottingham. Thomas Orrey, 19, from Bingham, is currently studying for an NVQ 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation and is just one of one hundred students to take part in work placements with United Living this academic year. After completing one of week work experience in October 2015, Thomas was given the opportunity to apply for Farrendale’s Apprenticeship programme and was successful in gaining a much sought after Apprenticeship, while completing his studies at the College. Thomas’ success highlights the benefits of this the new training partnership. Thomas said: “I’m grateful for the opportunity and training I received with United Living as this has enabled me to meet and work for Farrendale Electrical contractors. I’m now able to fulfil my ambition to become a fully Qualified electrician. Without the help from United Living I would not be in full time 52
work with an electrical contractor that is helping me to complete my NVQ 3.” Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economic Development, Councillor Richard Jackson said: "Thomas is a real success story of the training partnership and the Council is incredibly proud of this initiative which will equip three construction students a week with practical experience and an opportunity to gain valuable skills. “It is always pleasing to hear of a local teenager getting the opportunity to come into the construction industry with an apprenticeship. United Living wishes Thomas all the support he needs to complete his training going forward” said Richard Baker, Director of United Living. Terry Brickles, Head of School for Construction at Central College Nottingham, said: “Central offers hands-on construction training at our Beeston Centre, but industry work experience helps us prepare students for the world of work. Partnerships such as this go towards developing the next generation of skilled trades professionals.”

Book Review by Clare Lyons
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker
This is a very unusual book, it’s really a teen fiction but this wasn’t obviously apparent from the cover or content. It’s about a future in which time starts to stretch, so minutes and hours take longer and mankind’s grip on the order of time is lost. It’s a fascinating idea, and very cleverly explored as the animals suffer, the magnetic fields change and people have to choose how to respond – with the conflicts that those choices create. The whole event is seen through the eyes of awkward teenager Julia who has other problems getting to grips with the rest of life. It’s a thoughtful and thought provoking book, well written and interesting to read. There is no catastrophic ending, it’s all a bit airy fairy but that allows the reader to decide what they think would happen… If you fancy a change it’s definitely worth a go, this is Thompson Walkers first book and hopefully more original ideas will follow. Children’s Choice
Aerodynamics of Biscuits by Clare Helen Welsh and Sophia Touliatou
Well the title is good enough reason to read this book, and the illustrations make it even more fun. There are pirate mice and a very hungry boy who must work together to make a biscuit rocket – it’s perfectly ridiculous and silly which is sometimes just what everyone needs at the end of the day. It leads to lots of riotous discussions about other foods that might make good space ships, and even lead to a very creative colouring session at our house as we all designed new biscuits. This is the only book by Welsh currently, but we hope there will be more. www.mrsaverageevaluates.wordpress.com 56

Become Debt Free in 2016 British credit card holders owe an average of £2,000 on their plastic. To clear a debt of £2,000 on a card with an interest rate of 17% will take two years assuming a monthly repayment of £100. To clear that £2,000 with a monthly payment of a more affordable £30 (at 17%) will take 17 YEARS. But people are turning to other ways of borrowing, including payday lenders, friends, family, store cards and other loans for cars - even day-to-day living costs.According to one survey, average household debt now stands at around £13,000. To clear a debt of £13,000 at a modest 6% interest with a monthly repayment of £100 will also take around 17 years to clear. There are, however, plenty of simple ways to make significant savings on your regular spending that could clear your debt in less than a year. One of the golden rules of financial planning is to clear your most expensive debts first, in other words your credit cards. OK, credit cards offer a convenient way to pay for goods and services but if you can’t clear the balance every month, consider a low-cost loan as an alternative. Do the sums: a credit card debt (APR 16.8%) of £2,500 over five years will cost £1,212 in interest. A loan at 7.8% will cost £527. A saving of £685. More ways to save money Don’t buy designer labels Celebrities are given expensive clothes to wear. You’re not. Thankfully, millions of people have woken up to this and buy copycat fashions from the likes of Asos, and various other outlets. If you’re still tempted, face up to the fact that you may only wear the outfit once. Can you justify paying hundreds of pounds for a name? And can you honestly say you can tell the difference at a distance between a £600 designer bag and a £9.99 one from the market?

Remove from oven and allow to stand 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle the top with chopped fresh chives or finely chopped spring onion. Christmas & New Year
COCKTAILS
Blu Fizz Cocktail If you’re pushing the boat out and having a bottle of champagne with your Christmas or New Year lunch main course, adding a dash of cocktail liqueur can transform it to something even more exotic. Why not add a dash of De Kuyper Blue Curaçao to create a Blu Fizz cocktail – or if you prefer to be a little more conventional, try a classic Kir Royale made with champagne and a generous dash of De Kuyper Crème de Cassis. Method: Pour the De Kuyper Blue Curaçao into the flute glass and top up with the champagne. As an alternative to champagne, we suggest that you use another dry (Brut) sparkling wine such as Cava. Garnish: Sliver of lemon peel – if desired Taste: Fruity

Paul Burrows 07539 228682 Tribute to a great local man. Former Stapleford PC Malcolm Jarvis (pictured right- on the right) sadly passed away last month. Malcolm Jarvis died at 11pm on November 14 just hours after he had celebrated his birthday with family and friends. He had been chairman of the Ilkeston Branch of The Royal British Legion in the town for a number of years and acted as their spokesman. “Our hearts and minds go out to Helen his wife. On the day all his family, wife, children and grandchildren were present to celebrate the day, but now his wife Helen and the rest are trying to come to terms with the shock of it all.” Malcolm had not been ill, in fact he was very fit. Many people will remember him from the many years he served as a Police Officer in Stapleford. In 1996 The History of Stapleford Police by Malcolm Jarvis was released in a limited edition. Residents, businesses, employees and other organisations can now have their say on Nottinghamshire County Council’s budget plans for 2016/17. The County Council’s Policy Committee approved 58 new savings proposals which aim to reduce the Council’s annual running costs by more than £20m per year. The Council is seeking views on the proposals that affect the public. People have until 5 February 2016 to register their views. The budget proposals are available to view and make comment on via the Council’s website: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/budget A number of improvements have been made to the consultation process to make it easier than ever before for people to have their say. The website has been upgraded to make it easy to use on smartphones and tablets, as well as desktop computers and laptops. People registering their views will have the option of making a comment on as few or as many of the proposals as they like. For those without internet access, a consultation booklet including all the detailed budget proposals will be available to pick up from week commencing 21 December at any Nottinghamshire County Council library. Councillor Alan Rhodes, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “With income reducing and demand
for our services increasing, the County Council remains in an extremely challenging financial position. Regrettably, as a result, a number of our services will be impacted either through a reduced offer or an increase in charges. “However, we are continuing to do everything within our power to minimise the impact of reducing budgets on our residents by developing creative, innovative options for the way we deliver services and there are a number of examples of how we plan to do this in our proposals. “Everyone uses Council services, often without realising it and we support some of the most vulnerable people in the county. “It is vital you tell us what you think – we do listen. Following our budget consultation last year we changed a number of the initial proposals as a direct result of feedback from the public.” For the first time ever – and in recognition of the severity of the financial challenge facing the authority – the savings plans have been devised by councillors from all the main political groups working together. Councillor Kay Cutts, Leader of the Conservative Group at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “All the major political parties at the County Council recognise that we have a responsibility to have a balanced budget to protect the services which people rely on every day.” Councillor Ken Rigby, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, endorsed the views of both Councillors Cutts and Rhodes. SAVE MONEY AND REDUCE FOOD WASTE AT CHRISTMAS: FREE training for Nottingham groups and businesses Did you know you can freeze stuffing? Or that bread actually goes stale quicker in the fridge? Christmas is a costly time of year. The Centre for Retail Research found that the average Nottingham household spend at Christmas last year was £775, with £216 of that being spent on food and drink. At a time when we are spending more, we also seem to waste more. One third of us think that we are likely to waste more food at Christmas than at any other time of year. So how can we make the most of our Christmas foods? Love Food Hate Waste is here to help. We are offering FREE training sessions in Nottingham for individuals, community groups and businesses who want to take an active role in reducing food waste. The sessions are fun and interactive with lots of activities for sharing handy hints, top tips and sound advice about what you can freeze, how to make the most of leftovers and the importance of meal planning. Previous sessions have been held with organisations including Nottingham Diabetic Group and Stapleford Community Group. All you need to do is gather a group of at least 15 people in a suitable venue and Love Food Hate Waste’s expert advisors will do the rest – for FREE! All attendees will receive a certificate and resource pack to help to spread the Love Food Hate Waste message amongst family, friends and colleagues. The sessions are available until the end of March 2016. Celebrity chef and Love Food Hate Waste ambassador Richard Fox, said: “I have been involved with Love Food Hate Waste for several years now, and I am passionate, in particular, about helping people to create mouth-watering meals from their leftovers. Love Food Hate Waste offers straight-forward advice to help people to waste less and save more and I am proud to be supporting their campaign to reduce food waste.” For further information or to book a FREE training session in Nottingham, please contact: Allison.Czerwinka@wrap.org.uk or call: 01457 869 714. If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the benefit to the planet would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road. 68

NEW PENSION FREEDOMS – EVERYONE SHOULD BE TAKING STEPS NOW New flexibility means anyone over 55 can take all their savings in cash, either all at once or as and when they need it. We need to raise awareness of what is likely to be a growing problem as hundreds of thousands of 55 plus savers gain access to pension lump sums. Also, the Flat Rate State Pension comes into operation in April 2016 and full details will be explained during the courses. We are a partner with the Pensions Service (Department for Work and Pensions) and any new legislation will be explained in full during the courses. We aim to keep the courses very friendly and informal with an emphasis on the psychological approach to retirement and how to occupy the extra hours of leisure people will experience in retirement. Many people sleep-walk into retirement and spend more time planning a fortnight’s holiday than their retirement which could last a good 30 odd years or so. If ever the nation needed a wake-up call, then this is it. During the course, each delegate will be able to have a 1:1 with the speakers and also full updates will be given in relation to all the new regulations, together with calculations on the date men and women will receive their State Pension. This course will be particularly helpful for women born between April and July 1953 as by bringing forward the new flat rate state pension to 2016, they will be better off. A 3 course buffet lunch will be provided, plus tea/coffee/biscuits on arrival and during the morning and afternoon breaks. A full pack of information, leaflets, booklets and magazines/ newspapers will be provided to take home and refer to after retirement and hand-outs will be provided by each speaker. The Beeston Office is open for anyone to visit as a Resource Centre and for further help after retirement. Places will need to be booked in advance as a charge will be made to cover lunches and admin. costs. Telephone NDPRC on 0115 922 3824, mobile 07790 851 584 or visit the website to book a place on line www.ndprc.org.uk Next courses take place on 25th – 27th January 2016, then monthly thereafter.

BROXTOWE BUILDING CONTROL MOVES TO EREWASH BUILDING CONTROL SERVICES provided by Broxtowe Borough Council has moved to Erewash Borough Council today (23rd November) as part of a new partnership between the two authorities to provide enhanced services. Whether you are a professional with years of experience or building an extension for the first time, Building Control will be an important part of helping to complete the project successfully and on time. Safety in and around buildings is of prime concern and the Building Control service helps make sure that your building project complies with building regulations, ensuring that standards are in place to protect you and anyone living or working in and around the building. Councillor Phillip Owen, Portfolio Holder for Strategic Planning at Broxtowe Borough Council, said: “Meeting Building Regulations is extremely important to ensure that an acceptable standard of health and safety is achieved for people in and around buildings. This new partnership will be a new opportunity for both Council’s to improve the services they already provide to help ensure that customers get their building projects completed to their satisfaction.” For more information, please contact Erewash Borough Council on 0115 907 2221, email buildingcontrol@erewash.gov.uk or visit www.erewash.gov.uk To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk GRAPEVINE-NG9 Dec/Jan MAIN 2016.indd 71

Friends of Colliers Wood celebrates Britain’s ancient yews Friends of Colliers Wood has planted a yew tree propagated from an ancient tree over a thousand years old as part of The Conservation Foundation’s We Love Yew campaign to protect Britain’s ancient yew heritage. The young yew is one of 800 being planted across Britain to celebrate this year’s 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, when it is thought the Ankerwycke yew provided shelter for King John during its sealing at Runnymede. Great Britain has one of the world’s greatest collections of ancient yews, all far older than the Magna Carta and, often being among the oldest living thing in the landscape, can each tell their own story. It is hoped that Colliers Wood young yew will live for just as long and one day will be able to tell its own story of the area’s history to future generations. The We Love Yew campaign aims to raise awareness of Britain’s yew tree heritage, encourage better management for yews and regenerate the population.David Shreeve, director of The Conservation Foundation said, “We are delighted that Friends of Colliers Wood are supporting Britain’s yew heritage by planting this special sapling. Our ancient yews are a very special part of our environment and cultural heritage. Over the centuries many important events, including the sealing of Magna Carta took place under a yew tree, which being evergreen, was reliably dry. They have their own myths and traditions. The yew is also a tree of contrast. Whilst it is well-known to have toxic qualities, it has also provided treatment for cancer sufferers.”He continues, “Yews make very few demands, but do need a little bit of TLC from time to time. They can be older than anything else in the landscape, but often have very little official protection. They are already visited by large numbers of enthusiasts, but we hope this new project will encourage people to learn about their local yew and its place in the history of where they live and ensure they continue to grow for hundreds - possibly thousands more years.”Individuals and groups can plant their own yew and find out other ways to take part in the campaign at www.weloveyew.org

Funeral firm marks 30 years as it launches its charity Christmas tree appeal
A Stapleford funeral firm took time out to reflect on three decades of serving local families at the launch of its annual Christmas tree appeal. Staff at Gillotts Funeral Directors, in Derby Road, cut a celebratory cake and shared it out with visitors who dropped into the event, which took place on Saturday morning (Nov 21). Gillotts is operated by the Eastwood Funeral Partnership, which made company history when it opened its first branch office in Stapleford in 1985, operating the business alongside its original funeral home in Nottingham Road, Eastwood. It moved to its current Stapleford premises in 1997 and now also operates two further branches of Gillotts Funeral Directors, in Kimberley and Heanor.Visitors at the event on Saturday also remembered their loved ones by leaving messages on the branches of the tree, with the company pledging to give £1 for every message to this year’s chosen charity, the Kimberley-based Ryan Lee Trust.
30th anniversary with our customers at the same time. “The funeral industry has changed an awful lot since we opened our Stapleford office 30 years ago. “Funerals have become far more individualised celebrations of someone’s life since we opened the doors in Stapleford 30 years ago, and as a result we are much busier these days because of all the extra things we are asked to arrange, from motorcycle hearses to brightly coloured coffins and jazz bands.” Gillotts Funeral Directors is erecting Christmas trees

Funeral firm marks 30 years as it launches its charity Christmas tree appeal Continued
The Ryan Lee Trust was set up by Ryan’s parents, Deb and Shaun, following his death, aged just 15, in May 2010.The teenager had been diagnosed with five inoperable brain tumours in August the year before and his family decided to set up the Trust in his memory to raise money to buy specialist equipment for other families whose children were being treated for cancer. The charity also runs a drop-in cancer support centre, which provides advice and respite at its base in Main Street, Kimberley, and is now raising money to buy and renovate a fully equipped caravan in Norfolk, which its families will be able to visit for holidays. Gillotts is also hosting its Annual Memorial Christmas Church Service at St Mary’s Church, in Greasley, on Sunday, December 6, at 12pm. Last year, the company’s Christmas tree appeal raised £2,000 for the Rainbows Children’s Hospice in Loughborough, which cares for children from the EastMidlands with life-limiting illnesses.
