NEW : Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”.

Hello 2016! By the time you are reading this, we are probably a few weeks into the New Year. A new year always seems like the perfect time to make changes to our lives; whether they are big or small. So, maybe this is a chance to review your New Year’s resolutions? Something that I personally struggle with, as I am sure many other people do, is how to be efficient and staying positive when things may become a little too much. This could be trying to balance college work, friendships, family life, a job and extracurricular activities. This is something I am going to try to focus on myself during 2016. Being a young student in school, college or university, can often be much harder than most people first realise and it can take its toll. Research conducted by The Mental Health Foundation has shown that rates of mental health issues among children increase as they reach adolescence. Disorders affect 10.4% of boys aged 5-10, rising to 12.8% of boys aged 11-15, and 5.9% of girls aged 5-10, rising to 9.65% of girls aged 11-15. This could be partly down to the stresses put on young people through the education system. It is so easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of work you may have to complete for a deadline, and stress can either help or

18

hinder. Too much, and you can’t function and become unproductive, but equally if you maintain a moderate level of stress, you are likely to be more productive. Stress can be dealt with in a number of ways, and coping methods differ from person to person. One of the main ways to become efficient and to prevent high levels of stress is to save time here and there. Saving half an hour throughout a day could save you 3 ½ hours over the duration of the week. Also complete work the day it is set, don’t leave it for the night before the deadline. This allows for plenty of time to resolve any issues which may be encountered. Another way which can help to reduce stress levels is to use time productively. When sitting down to complete a piece of work, allow a realistic amount of time to complete it. Eliminate any distractions, for example from social media, by turning off mobile phones and tablets. Then, put rewards in place for the work you have completed. This could be going out to visit friends, watching your favourite television show, or relaxing. Whatever you enjoy or find rewarding will be perfect. This should be motivational and help to complete the work efficiently, resulting in deadlines being met and positive outcomes being achieved. Another tip is to purchase a diary or notebook, as using one really does help with busy schedules. A busy schedule can become overwhelming if plans aren’t written down. This way, good time management is easier to achieve. Good planning is essential to prioritise work, whilst still leaving time for extra-curricular activities and socialising with family and friends. Hopefully these tips can help prepare you for the busy year ahead! Article by Emma Snow

New Tree Edges Broxtowe Closer To 100,000 Target A new tree planted at Beeston Town Hall (Friday 4th December) has edged Broxtowe Borough Council one step closer to its 100,000 tree planting target by 2016. Tree Planting Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw assisted members of Beeston and District Civic Society in planting a Birch tree in the Town Hall grounds. The tree has been generously donated by the Society as a replacement for a dying lime tree and it is hoped the Birch will establish before the lime has to be removed. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economic Development, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Civic Society for donating this tree and they are just one of the local community groups and schools that we have worked with over the past few years to support tree planting in the borough. Protecting and enhancing the environment is a priority for the Council and I am so pleased that we have nearly reached our 100,000 target." Barbara Selwood from Beeston and District Civic Society said: "We are always happy to support tree planting initiatives and it is with great pleasure that the Society has had the opportunity to donate a tree which will be for the benefit of the people of Beeston. We suggested that a native species was chosen, preferably that has some visual interest as well as being a good habitat for wildlife. We are very proud to be contributing to Broxtowe Borough Council's target of 100,000 trees." The Council's Parks and Open Spaces team is already developing plans for their next project to improve the green spaces in the Borough.

SCHOOLCHILDREN will help mark an historic day as they help plant the 100,000th tree in Broxtowe, reaching the Council’s target to plant 100,000 trees by 2016. Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw will join the Y5 children from Springbank Primary School to Plant the 100,000th tree in Jubilee Park, Eastwood on Thursday 4th February. The tree will be one of three large English Oaks and 100 smaller mixed native trees to be planted at the park at the event, with similar plantations will also be going in on sites in the four larger towns in Broxtowe – Beeston, Kimberley and Stapleford. “It is a great honour to be involved in this tree planting event,” said the Mayor. “Oak trees are one of the most well known and loved trees so it is fitting that we should mark such a momentous occasion by planting one to reach our target.” Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economic Development, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “This event is a very proud occasion for both the Council and the Borough of Broxtowe and marks five years of hard work to achieve our ambitious target to plant 100,000 trees in the Borough. Protecting and enhancing the environment is a priority for the Council and I am so pleased that we have reached our 100,000 target.” Broxtowe is part of Greenwood Community Forest, which aims to increase tree cover in Nottinghamshire. Malcolm Hackett, Greenwood’s Senior Practitioner said: “Broxtowe’s target of

24

100,000more trees showed great vision for the district and completing the planting this month is testimony to a lot of work by the many local people who got involved. Greenwood has been pleased to support this effort and we are looking forward to seeing these trees grow to their full potential and helping more people to enjoy their local woodlands and green spaces.” Trees are an intergal part of the British landscape and as well as their natural beauty, they provide towns and cities with shade and a cooling effect in summer, absorb atmospheric pollutants and safely lock away the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Trees and hedgerows support a huge range of wildlife, providing food and shelter along with a place to nest and hibernate. Over the past five years, the Council has undertaken tree planting schemes on parks, open spaces, roadside verges, burial grounds, housing sites and in town centres. In addition a great deal of support and encouragement has been provided to housing developers, Borough residents, community and friends groups to help plant more trees. The Council’s Parks and Open Spaces team is already developing plans for their next project to improve the green spaces in the Borough. LETS BAKE!- CUSTARD TART

Winter Warmers

Tuscan Five-bean Soup Recipe Having friends over for dinner? This simple vegetarian recipe provides a complete meal, and you can make it a few days in advance for really tasty results. Prep time: 15 minutes (plus overnight soaking).Cooking time: 50 minutes

Ingredients (serves 6-8 people)

75g each of dried borlotti beans, dried red lentils, dried green lentils, dried green split peas, dried small white beans (cannellini or toscanelli), barley 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 medium onion, diced 1 medium carrot, diced 1 celery branch, thinly sliced 2 fresh garlic cloves, minced Fresh (or dried) thyme, bay leaves and sage 3 litres water Salt and pepper

Method

Soak the lentils, beans and barley overnight in cold water. (If you’re using pearl barley you won’t need to pre-soak it but it’s not as good for you nutritionally). Rinse the beans, lentils and barley thoroughly under more cold water. In a large pot, cook the vegetables and herbs in olive oil for about 5 minutes. Add your beans, lentils and barley. Then add the water. Bring to the boil and reduce to simmer for about 45 minutes. Remove the stems of the herbs and the bay leaves. Serve with fresh, crusty Italian bread.

30

Simple Vegetable Soup Recipe A quick and easy basic recipe to get lots of vegetable goodness into the kids. Prep time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 55 minutes

Ingredients (serves 4-6 people) 2 leeks 2 potatoes 3 carrots Other vegetables according to your taste, eg: turnip, parsnip, celeriac, celery, courgette Olive oil Salt and pepper

Method

Heat the olive oil in a large pot. Slice and cook the leeks for about 10 minutes over a medium heat until golden. Chop up all the vegetables into smallish chunks then add these to the pot. Cover with water, add salt and pepper (and a bay leaf, if you like), bring to the boil and let it simmer for 30-45 minutes. Remove the bay leaf if you’ve used one, then use a hand blender to cream the soup to whatever consistency takes your fancy. TIP: Serve with crusty bread or make your own garlic croutons with roughly cut French bread lightly tossed in a mix of a little olive oil and finely chopped garlic, spread out on a baking sheet and cooked on a high heat for a few minutes.

RSPB offers advice on how to look after your garden visitors this winter As the cold weather sets in and you step up feeding your garden birds, the RSPB is warning about hidden hazards in some bird food packaging and giving some tips on how best to look after our feathered friends this winter. The charity’s wildlife enquiries team receives a number of calls each year from gardeners reporting deaths or injuries to birds after they’ve become tangled up in the mesh or netting surrounding the food that’s been left out for them. “Surprisingly, the netting that surrounds fat balls, peanuts and seed sold for bird food is one of the most dangerous things that can be put out in our gardens,” commented Val Osborne, the RSPB’s head of wildlife enquiries.“Despite suggesting they must be safe to wildlife because of the way they’re sold, the mesh and netting can easily trap birds’ feet and beaks, causing severe injury or even death.” The RSPB recommends removing the food from the netting and transferring to a safe and suitable feeder. Val Osborne continued: “Many suppliers of bird food now stock products without these potential death traps, but unfortunately, some have not followed suit and are still using these dangerous and unnecessary plastic mesh wrappers. Not only can they cause injury or worse to wild birds but they are just one more hazardous item of plastic to go into landfill.

32

”With forecasts of snow and ice , it’s now more important than ever to feed and water your garden birds, says the RSPB. Natural food sources have begun to dwindle, plants may become covered with snow, berry crops are coming to an end, and lakes, rivers and ponds are freezing over. “As the harsh weather arrives, the extra food, water and shelter we provide for birds and other creatures could be the difference between life and death for many species,” said Val. The RSPB suggests calorie-rich foods like mixed seed, nyjer seed, fatballs, suet sprinkles, sunflower seed and peanuts as well as kitchen scraps, like mild grated cheese, rice and porridge oats. A supply of water is also essential for bathing and preening. In freezing conditions birds will become more dependent on water provided in gardens, since many natural sources of water are frozen over. Val says: “The most effective way to keep the water in your garden from freezing is to pop in a light ball that will be moved by even a gentle breeze and keep a small amount of water ice free – a ping-pong ball is ideal. Alternatively, pour on hot water to melt the ice to make sure the birds can get to it.” For more information about safe ways to feed birds, how best to look after the wildlife in your garden and ways to avoid the pitfalls, visit www.rspb.org.uk The RSPB stocks a range of bird foods and safe, high-quality feeders for your garden birds. The Erewash valley lodge of the R,A,O,B, gle (Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes under the grand lodge of England) the secretary Bro Bill Cutler roh. Bro Mick Cook, Bro Jim Roy roh two trustees went to Aldi in Long Eaton to pick up and pay for six hundred and fifty pounds worth of food for our charity The Food Bank Long Eaton. On the way there my wife Dame Linda Roy roh of the ladies glade who come under our banner said she would check the church to make sure it was the right place. Good job she did as they said they had no room! We told Bill and we could not think of any where else Dame Roy suggested the salvation army so we went to their main office in Chilwell they said they would be very grateful especially at this time of year. We went back too Aldi where bro Mick had his big van from his company HENRY'S OF BRAILSFORD Dame Linda and Bill and Mick loaded it and we delivered to the Salvation Army who thanked the lodge and its members for their generosity.

NEW LAW FOR MICROCHIPPING DOGS BROXTOWE RESIDENTS ARE being urged to ensure their dogs are microchipped before a new law comes into effect in April. On 6th April 2016, microchipping will become compulsory for all dogs and owners who do not microchip their dogs can be fined up to £500. To help, Broxtowe Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Wardens will be holding a series of free micochipping events across the borough where dog owners can turn up on the day to have their pets microchipped. Dates and locations are published on the Council’s website at www. broxtowe.gov.uk/microchip The new law is designed to help reunite owners with lost or stolen pets, promote responsible dog ownership and help relieve the burden on animal charities and local authorities of finding the owners of lost animals who are not microchipped. Private microchipping appointments are also available from just £10.00. For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 7777, email neighbourhood.wardens@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk

Stapleford firm helps gives Notts charity’s caravan appeal a flying start A Stapleford firm has helped a Nottinghamshire charity’s bid to raise £25,000 to send families of children and young people with cancer on holiday off to a flying start. Hundreds of pounds raised at Gillotts Funeral Directors, in Derby Road, has contributed to an overall £1,500 donation made to the Ryan Lee Trust, which is based in Kimberley and wants to collect the cash to purchase and fit out a holiday caravan in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. The money was raised via the company’s remembrance Christmas tree appeal, which Gillotts staged at its Stapleford office last month, as well as at its funeral homes in Eastwood, Kimberley and Heanor. This week Gillotts partners Joanne Hutsby and Anthony Topley visited the drop-in centre to hand over the cheque to trust founder Deb Lee, who launched the charity when her son, Ryan, died in 2010 at the age of 15 after developing five brain tumours. The charity lends much-needed specialist living equipment that is not available on the NHS to local families, such as supportive seats, sensory lights, walking frames and adjustable vests, but now wants to buy the caravan – which it has called a Care-avan – so that they can enjoy a week away at the seaside. Joanne Hutsby, a partner at Gillotts Funeral Directors, said: “We have got to

know Deb and her team extremely well over the years and we know what a great and worthy cause the Ryan Lee Trust is. “The Care-avan has the power to make a huge difference to the families who will use it and we are extremely happy to give the fund a head start with the proceeds of our Christmas appeal.” Deb said: “We are extremely grateful to Gillotts for their kind donation, which represents a wonderful start to our Careavan Appeal. “The Care-avan will be properly fitted out and promises to become a much-needed lifeline for families who will be able to enjoy a well-earned break from the stressful treatment and hospital visits that become part of their day-to-day lives.”

From left, Anthony Topley and Joanne Hutsby, who are both partners at Gillotts Funeral Directors, handed over a £1,500 cheque to Deb Lee whose charity, the Ryan Lee Trust, wants to raise £25,000 to buy a holiday caravan for families of children and young people with cancer.

Councils are to start issuing fines for parking in dropped kerbs.

for the disabled or those with pushchairs.”

Councils are to begin issuing penalty notices to Nottinghamshire motorists who park their cars across dropped kerbs.

Tickets will be issued from Monday, December 14, and fines will be set at £70, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.

Nottinghamshire County Council says local district council officers will be given the power start issuing the fines from Monday, December 14.

The council added a vehicle does not have to be fully obstructing the crossing point area to get a ticket.

Peter Goode, the authority’s traffic manager, said: “Dropped kerbs are provided to help pedestrians cross the road, enable wheelchairs to pass from footway to carriageway and help visually impaired and blind people to know which direction to take. “Any part of a vehicle encroaching into the crossing area can create an obstruction.” Action will focus on giving penalty charge notices to vehicles that are obstructing pedestrian crossing points.

A civil enforcement officer can issue a penalty charge notice if any part of the vehicle is blocking the area. The Highway Code already advises drivers not to stop or park where a kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility scooters. Nottingham City Council already penalises drivers for parking on dropped kerb crossings. By Chris Breese, Notts TV and Stapleford Community Group

These often include lowered kerbs or raised carriageway to create a smooth crossing. Mr Goode added: “These crossing points are essential to assist all pedestrians when crossing the road and they are particularly important 48

Note from Stapleford Councillors Stapleford Councillors have taken the decision to combine all Stapleford CATs into one. This means that the Stapleford North CAT organised for 8 October is now cancelled, this was partially due to Pastures Road Community Church not being available. It is planned that meetings will be held at different venues when they are available but Councillors felt that the Meeting Place is fairly central. All 6 Broxtowe Borough Councillors have been invited to attend the meetings. Councillors want to work together to serve Stapleford better. There will be 4 meetings held over the year, the dates for these are: Thursday 21st January 2016 · Thursday 21st January Thursday 21st April 2016 · Thursday 21st April Thursday 21st July 2016 · Thursday 21st July Thursday 20th October 2016 · Thursday 20th October Sent on behalf of Stapleford Councillors - Richard MacRae - Stapleford Community Group

WAYS TO PAY YOUR COUNCIL TAX IT’S THE NEW YEAR and for many people, that means paying the final Council tax payment of the financial year. Book Review by Clare Lyons The Reversal by Michael Connolly This was an intriguing book, and another new-to-me author to get to grips with. It is essentially a court room drama, but with a genuinely compelling set of characters and a few red herrings and surprises to keep the story going at a very strong pace. The main character is Mickey Haller, a well known defence attorney who is asked to work for the prosecution – immediately creating a good dramatic situation and a tension that lasts throughout the story. Then throw in working with an ex-wife or two and the tension builds! The story stood on its own, despite the fact that it does allude to other books that Mickey Haller is in. It is well written and easy to enjoy, despite being about the murder of a child; which is not overly graphic or needlessly bloodthirsty. The legal situations are interesting and the characters have enough ‘kept back’ that they remain believable and clear to imagine. It was a good story, well told. It also had a satisfying ending which certainly makes you want to read more. This is the third Mickey Haller book, and also features Harry Bosch who also has a series of books as the lead character, as well as other stand alone crime/ drama offerings by Connolly. As with most authors who write to a ‘pattern’ I suspect reading too many all at once could become a bit predictable, but the quality means that dipping in and out is well worth a go. Children’s Choice Superhero Phonic Readers – Ladybird Books We sometimes struggle to find engaging books for the discerning six year old boy – so were extremely pleased to find this set of ten new superhero books, based on phonics and building reading skills whilst also being great fun and very silly. Each book stands alone, and has a superhero (our current favourite is Zain Zoom) who has to use their skill to prevent some villainous activity. At the end of the story there are questions you can share to support understanding of the story, as well as other puzzles and ‘tricky word’ help. There is also a reward chart to complete once the child can read the book without help. These have been hugely popular in our house – although probably being read from memory rather than the words… www.letyourselfgrow.org 56

Enjoy a ‘happiness trial’ with the Oddfellows Local friendship society Nottingham Oddfellows has shared its top five tips for feeling happier in later life. Said Karen Pye-Smith: “We’ve more than 200 years’ experience in helping people to get more out of life and to form lasting friendships, so we thought we’d share a little of what we’ve learnt along the way.” 1

Keep your brain busy. Challenge yourself with crosswords, start a course, catch a talk or play, or write a letter. Research has found that staying mentally active can increase your brain’s vitality. If anything, you’ll be impressed by your productivity and have fun along the way. 2 Help others. Not only does volunteering encourage you to mix socially, it can supercharge selfconfidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction. Millions of people over 60 (around 2.2m say the Royal Voluntary Service) help out with at least two different charities, citing one of the reasons as enjoying having a purpose in life. 3 Join a local club or society. More often than not, regular contact with those who share a common interest or hobby will result in meaningful friendships. Research has shown that people in mid to later years who have a wide circle of friends tend to be happier and healthier. 4 Get physical. There are so many rewards to regular exercise aside from keeping trim. It reduces many cardiovascular risks, including high blood pressure and heart disease. It also gives your mental health a boost, helping combat stress, anxiety and depression. Weightbearing exercise, such as running is also good to protect against osteoporosis. For the less mobile, ‘chairobics’ is a great option. 5 Seize the day! Society research revealed that one of the benefits to retirement was being able to shop during less busy hours and not having to leave household chores to the weekend. By using time more wisely, you can do more of what you love – including steps one to four! Karen added: “We can certainly help people on their way to achieving most of these points. We’ve 433 members who meet regularly to get involved in all sorts of activities, such as crafting, walking, playing scrabble, taking trips out and having meals together. We invite anyone, of any age to come along and give us a try – call it a happiness trial!” In addition to running social events throughout the year, Nottingham Oddfellows offers volunteering opportunities and care and welfare support to members who may feel lonely, unwell or who are facing other difficulties. For information on how to get involved, call Karen Pye-Smith on 01949 843727 or 07921821866 or email karen.pye-smith@oddfellows.co.uk.

Wollaton Hall is a beautiful Elizabethan House, built by Sir Francis Willoughby in collaboration with the architect Robert Smithson and completed in 1588. Today it is owned By Nottingham City Council and houses the cities natural history collection. It is noted as one of the most haunted buildings in Nottinghamshire. Runners in Broxtowe are being urged to join 250 others in the local area to take part in a challenge with a dierence this month, to help raise as much as possible for an armed forces charity, Forces in the Community and Nottingham Children's Hospital, which looks after sick children. Broxtowe Sport, Broxtowe Borough Council's Sport Development Team have teamed up with Virtual Runner to host the Badger Run where participants complete a 'virtual' 5K, 10K or a half marathon distance, picking the time, the place and the route they wish, all in aid of Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw's chosen charities, Nottingham Children's Hospital and Forces In The Community.Whether it's at the park, on the road, at a local parkrun or even on the treadmill in the gym, complete the challenge with friends, colleagues, family or solo.

January one year that was close to home which worked around my busy work and home life. I had been running for 2 years and I'd really caught the bug and needed a challenge. Councillor Bagshaw said: The badger is a symbol of Broxtowe and I'm so grateful to Susan for coming up with the idea of the Badger Run. We've already had 250 sign up to help support these worthy causes and I urge anyone else who would like to help to sign up today. The event costs ÂŁ10.00 to enter at www.virtualrunneruk.com. For further details and information please contact Broxtowe Borough Council (0177) 377 0110 or visit the Council's website. www.broxtowe.gov.uk

Distances must be completed between the 1st February 2016 and 29th February 2016 and once completed, Virtual Runner will send each participant their very own badger shaped medal. The idea of a virtual run came from Virtual Runner founder, Susan Wheatcroft. She said: The idea for the venture came from my frustration of not being able to find a race in 68 Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements. GRAPEVINE-NG9 Feb MAIN 1 2016.indd 68

New Local Nature Reserve In Trowell Celebrations will take place at Pit Lane Recreation Ground in Trowell next week after it was designated as a Local Nature Reserve last year. Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw will join The Practical Conservation Volunteers and representatives from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, Broxtowe Borough Council and Trowell Parish Council at a short ceremony to celebrate the site’s new status on Tuesday 9th February at 11.00am. The former opencast site is a valuable link connecting five of the Council’s LNR’s within the Erewash Valley. It has grassland and young tree plantations which make it an important site for wildlife, as well as the people who enjoy a range of sports and outdoor activities on the site. The Council has a target of declaring new Local Nature Reserves and this will be the 15th site to be awarded the status in the Borough. Natural England’s guidelines suggest a minimum total area for Broxtowe of 107 hectares and the new site exceeds this target, bringing the total to 121.2 hectares in the Borough. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economic Development,

Councillor Richard Jackson said: The Council is committed to protecting and enhancing the natural environment for future generations and is delighted to add Pit Lane to its existing Local Nature Reserves. These important sites provide many benefits to local people including quality of life, health and well-being as well as providing opportunities for education, enjoyment and recreation, helping to attract visitors and preserve links with the local community’s past. A management plan has been prepared in partnership with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust to consider ways of improving the site for wildlife without impacting on the many sports and recreational activities which currently take place. Local Nature Reserves are places with wildlife or geological features that are of special interest locally, which give people opportunities to study and learn about them or simply enjoy and have contact with nature. For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on (0115) 917 3643the or visit the Council’s website. www.broxtowe.gov.uk

Friends of Colliers Wood celebrates Britain’s ancient yews Friends of Colliers Wood has planted a yew tree propagated from an ancient tree over a thousand years old as part of The Conservation Foundation’s We Love Yew campaign to protect Britain’s ancient yew heritage. The young yew is one of 800 being planted across Britain to celebrate this year’s 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, when it is thought the Ankerwycke yew provided shelter for King John during its sealing at Runnymede. Great Britain has one of the world’s greatest collections of ancient yews, all far older than the Magna Carta and, often being among the oldest living thing in the landscape, can each tell their own story. It is hoped that Colliers Wood young yew will live for just as long and one day will be able to tell its own story of the area’s history to future generations. The We Love Yew campaign aims to raise awareness of Britain’s yew tree heritage, encourage better management for yews and regenerate the population.David Shreeve, director of The Conservation Foundation said, “We are delighted that Friends of Colliers Wood are supporting Britain’s yew heritage by planting this special sapling. Our ancient yews are a very special part of our environment and cultural heritage. Over the centuries many important events, including the sealing of Magna Carta took place under a yew tree, which being evergreen, was reliably dry. They have their own myths and traditions. The yew is also a tree of contrast. Whilst it is well-known to have toxic qualities, it has also provided treatment for cancer sufferers.”He continues, “Yews make very few demands, but do need a little bit of TLC from time to time. They can be older than anything else in the landscape, but often have very little official protection. They are already visited by large numbers of enthusiasts, but we hope this new project will encourage people to learn about their local yew and its place in the history of where they live and ensure they continue to grow for hundreds - possibly thousands more years.”Individuals and groups can plant their own yew and find out other ways to take part in the campaign at www.weloveyew.org
