One Hundred Years Old And Still Keeping Fit At one hundred years old, Stan Partridge from Trowell is proof that you’re never too old to exercise. Stan celebrated his 100th birthday on 26th January but still manages to keep fit by taking part in one of Broxtowe Borough Council’s Movement to Music classes each week. A World War II Veteran, Stan, who lives at one of the Council’s Retirement Living schemes has been attending the classes for the past three years to help keep him fit and healthy, as well as giving him an opportunity to socialise with other residents. Movement to Music Instructor, Amy Godsmark said: “Stan is always enthusiastic and the sessions have really helped him stay fit and keep his independence. He’s a very popular resident and says how much he enjoys the social aspects of the classes as well. I enjoy teaching these classes because every day is different and the ladies and gents at class really enjoy taking part. I can notice a difference in their flexibility, balance and co-ordination too which is veryrewarding. I love teaching this age group they are always loyal, hard-working and a good giggle!”

Movement to Music classes are suitable for older people or those with mobility problems. The classes use a mixture of exercise techniques, seated and standing, stretching, core stability and Pilates all to both retro and modern music. Broxtowe Borough Council runs four weekly classes at the following times and locations: Tesco Toton Community room on Mondays between 2.15pm to 3.15pm Church Close, Trowell on Tuesdays between 10.30am to 11.30am The Pearson Centre, Beeston on Wednesdays between 2.00pm and 3.00pm Westbourne Court, Bramcote on Thursdays between 11.00am and 12.00pm All classes cost just £2.00 and there is no need to book. Taking part in exercise is important for all ages and abilities. Adapted exercise such as walking sports and seated exercise enables all to take part, whatever your ability. Exercise helps to prevent conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and reduce the risk of stroke. It also helps to prevent falls by as much as 54% and can enable you to continue with everyday tasks, as well as preventing mental health issues keeping you feeling great!
Broxtowe Borough Council’s sports development team, Broxtowe Sport, work with a variety of different partners to provide exercise opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, including a range of adapted exercise sessions. For more information or for other exercise options please contact Broxtowe Borough Council T: (0115) 917 3572 or visit the Council’s website. http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/

EGG-TRAORDINARY CHARITY BALL WITH EASTER JUST around the corner, what better way to celebrate than at this year’s annual Broxtowe Borough ‘Spring into Summer' Charity Ball, where guests will receive one of 200 hand-knitted chicks and a Cadburys Cream Egg in support of Cancer Research UK. The ball will take place at the Nottingham Belfry Hotel on Saturday 28th March and is in aid of two charities, Hope Nottingham and Cancer Research UK. This year’s unusual table gifts have been provided by the Nuthall & Kimberley Cancer Research Committee, who each year knit thousands of chicks to raise funds for the charity. In 2013 the Committee raised over £10,000 alone by knitting the Easter chicks. This year’s Broxtowe Borough Charity & Civic Ball promises to be as popular as ever, starting with a drinks reception followed by a delicious three course meal. All this for just £32.00 per person, as well as a charity raffle with fantastic prizes sponsored by local businesses and dancing to Maslow, a top class functions band from the East Midlands.Tickets are on sale now for the black-tie evening, hosted by the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Stan Heptinstall MBE at the award-winning Nottingham Belfry Hotel, Mellors Way, Nottingham. Councillor Heptinstall said: “Spring is a lovely season which often symbolises hope and this year’s ‘Spring into Summer’ themed event will raise funds to help support and give hope to all those that these charities support every day.” “I have been overwhelmed by the support for my chosen charities during my time as Mayor and tickets to the Charity Ball are selling fast. I encourage local people from across the community to book their place and join me with friends, family and colleagues for an enjoyable evening of fun and fundraising." Local businesses so far who have been supporting the Ball through sponsorship and by donating raffle prizes include Bullock Construction, Heart Internet Ltd, KLG Amazing Glazing, Complete Working and Webro, amongst others. Tickets can be purchased from the Civic Office at Broxtowe Borough Council or by visiting www.broxtowe.gov.uk/civic. A special room rate is also on offer for a limited number of rooms for guests staying overnight at the Belfry Hotel. For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3210 or email civic@broxtowe.gov.uk

I would recommend the group to anyone.” says John Groves who attends Beeston Cycle Centre. Saturday sessions in Beeston are run by popular local instructor, Kelly O’Brian. Breaking the law without realising- Tips for all drivers. Being pulled over by the police is something all drivers – law-abiding or not – dread. Perhaps you’d been a little overenthusiastic with your right foot, or maybe you were giving in to the temptation to check your emails while stopped at traffic lights. Using an Apple Watch while driving could put you in prison for up to two years. This new gadget allows users to make calls, check their messages and monitor their health. But do so while driving and you face the same penalties as for using a hand-held mobile phone. For while we may all be aware of the illegality of, say, exceeding the speed limit, most of Britain’s 34 million drivers risk falling foul of the law because of the seemingly innocent things we do in our cars. From driving with a dirty number plate (£1,000 fine) to playing music too loudly, taking to the road in 21st-century Britain is fraught with legal issues. We know we shouldn’t use a mobile phone it unless it’s hands-free, a motorist might feel it’s ok and correct bypulling to the side of the road before making a call. But unless the engine is switched off, then, in law, they are deemed to be using the phone while driving, which will net them three points – which could soon be hiked up to six – and a £100 fine. Conversely, people think that using the phone hands-free or taking their eyes off the road to look at the satnav is somehow powerful mitigation if it affects their driving. But just because these devices are legal, they can’t protect you from a criminal charge if they distract you. If you decide to put on a bit of lipstick at the traffic lights or grab a sandwich (or a banana) while driving, both of these actions, could lead to a charge of not being in proper control of your vehicle – an offence that carries three points and a £100 fine. On the snacking point, however, the University of Leeds found that reaction times of motorists who took in a snack while driving were up to 44 per cent below their normal response time.

We’re responsible for what happens in the car – something dog lovers should take note of when travelling with their pets. If your dog sticks its head out the window, starts yapping madly or even tries to slobber on you at the lights, such actions will not provide a defence if you cause an accident or drive erratically. More than one in four (27%) dog-owning motorists unwittingly break the law when it comes to transporting their pets by not keeping them restrained when their vehicles are on the road, new research has found*. The RAC Pet Insurance study also revealed that 4% of pet (2% dog and 2% cat) owners have had an accident, or a near miss, as a result of a cat or dog being loose in their car. According to the Highway Code dogs or other animals** should be suitably restrained in a vehicle so that they don’t distract the driver or injure them if the vehicle stops quickly. Official advice from the RSPCA is that dogs are both secure and comfortable during transport. While the majority agree that it is a hazard to allow a dog to be loose in a vehicle, 28% said they would let their dog move freely, even in a vehicle full of luggage. Also of concern is that 21% usually leave their dogs unsecured on car seats while 6% let them travel in passenger footwells. Of those who do secure their dogs in transit on the road, a third (34%) restrict their animals to the boot, less than a quarter (24%) use a pet seatbelt or harness, and just 15% transport their dogs in a cage or carrier. As many as 78% of dog owners travel with their dogs in the car whereas cat owners do not tend to drive with their cats as much, with only 50% saying they ride with them. Parents should note that it is illegal to use a hand-held phone or be over the drinkdrive limit when supervising a learner. The best thing you can do when you’re in the car is keep your hands on the wheel, avoid distractions and don’t do anything other than drive!. COMMUNITIES TOGETHER FOR HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY SCHOOLCHILDREN helped Broxtowe Borough Council mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2015 at a short ceremony last month to mark the 15th annual event. Pupils from Springbank Primary School choir, Eastwood performed ‘Something Inside So Strong’ at the event in the Walled Garden at Bramcote Hills Park.Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Stan Heptinstall MBE joined the children, alongside Youth Mayor, Jade Cox and pupils from Hall Park Academy, Eastwood in delivering readings to reflect the theme of this year’s event, ‘ Keeping the Memory Alive’. Members of the Pulp Friction Atmosphere Glee Choir concluded the event with a musical performance. In the light of the recent tragic incidents across the world, an additional short ceremony took place outside the Town Hall, Beeston to show support for peace and harmony in the community. The Mayor released a dove of peace as a symbol of community cohesion and to demonstrate solidarity in the fight against hate crime. Each year for the past 15 years Broxtowe Borough Council has held a ceremony at Bramcote Hills Park on 27th January to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. The Holocaust Memorial Garden at the park was opened at the first ceremony on 27th January 2001. The garden helps to ‘Keep the Memory Alive’ in the Borough, including a sculpture created by Naomi Blake, a survivor of Auschwitz in memory of the 6,000,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis because of who they were, a Ginkgo Biloba Tree in memory of Dr Matel Shimonovna Chernyavskaya, a Holocaust survivor, which was planted as a lasting tribute to commemorate victims and symbolise hope for the future, a sapling tree to mark Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday and in December 2014, a Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ tree was planted to mark the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide.

Tips on using a slow cooker Slow cookers are cheap to buy, economical to use and they're great for making the most of budget ingredients. They offer a healthier, low-fat method of cooking and require the minimum amount of effort. 1. Save time & effort - One of the main attractions for many is the ease of a slow-cooker so when you’re looking for recipes, avoid those that suggest a lot of pre-preparation. For many dishes, particularly soups and stews, you really can just throw all the ingredients in. It can be nice to cook the onions beforehand as the flavour is different to when you put them in raw but experiment both ways as you may find you prefer one. It can also be good to brown meat to give it some colour but again this is not essential. 2. Get ahead - If you’re short on time in the morning, prepare everything you need for your slow-cooked meal the night before, put it into the slow-cooker dish, cover and store in the fridge overnight. Ideally the dish should be as close to room temperature as possible, so get it out of the fridge when you wake up and leave it for 20 minutes before turning the cooker on. If you need to heat your dish beforehand, then put the ingredients in a different container and transfer them in the morning. 3. Save money - Slow cookers are great for cooking cheaper cuts like beef brisket, pork shoulder, lamb shoulder and chicken thighs. You can also use less meat as slow-cooking really extracts a meaty flavour that permeates the whole dish. Bulk up with vegetables instead. 4. Trim the fat - You don’t need to add oil to a slow cooker, the contents won’t catch as long as there’s enough moisture in there. You don’t need a lot of fat on your meat either. Normally when you fry meat, a lot of the fat drains away, this won’t happen in a slow cooker so trim it off, otherwise you might find you have pools of oil in your stew. This will give you a healthier result and it’ll still be tasty. 38

18/02/2015 16:01
5. Go easy on the liquid - Because your slow cooker will have a tightly sealed lid, the liquid won’t evaporate so if you’re adapting a standard recipe, it’s best to reduce the liquid by roughly a third. Liquid should just cover the meat and vegetables. Don’t overfill your slow cooker or it may start leaking out the top and food won’t cook as well. Half to two thirds full is ideal and certainly no more than three quarters. 6. Thickening - Just as the the liquid doesn’t reduce it also doesn’t thicken. You can roll meat in a small amount of seasoned flour before adding it to the slow cooker or use a little cornflour at the end. If you want to do the latter, take a teaspoon or two of cornflour, mix it to a paste with a little cold water. Stir into your simmering slow cooker contents, then replace the lid. 7. Slow is good - Use the ‘Low’ setting as much as you can, finding most dishes really benefit from a slow, gentle heat to really bring out the flavours. This also means you won’t need to worry if you’re heading out for the day, it’ll take care of itself. 8. Leave it alone - Slow cookers are designed to do their own thing so you don’t need to keep checking the contents. Everytime you take the lid off it will release some of the heat, so if you keep doing this you’ll have to increase the cooking time. 9. When to add food - Ideally you want to choose recipes where most, if not all, of the ingredients can be added at the beginning, leaving you free to do other things. However in most cases, pasta, rice and fresh herbs will need to be added towards the end. 10. How long should I cook it for? If a dish usually takes: 15 - 30 mins, cook it for 1 - 2 hours on High or 4 - 6 hours on Low 30 mins - 1 hour, cook it for 2 - 3 hours on High or 5 - 7 hours on Low 1 - 2 hours, cook it for 3 - 4 hours on High or 6 - 8 hours on Low 2 - 4 hours, cook it for 4 - 6 hours on High or 8 - 12 hours on Low Root vegetables can take longer than meat and other vegetables so put these near the heat source, at the bottom of the pot. Spiced Carrot and Lentil Soup Delicious spicy blend, packed with goodness & iron, a low fat soup. This can be made in a saucepan or in a slow cooker. Serve 4 takes about 15 minutes to cook in saucepan , 3 hours in slow cooker Ingredients 2 tsp cumin seeds pinch chilli flakes 2 tbsp olive oil 600g carrots, washed and coarsely grated (no need to peel) 140g split red lentils 1l hot vegetable stock (from a cube is fine) 125ml milk plain yogurt and naan bread, to serve Method Heat a large saucepan and dry-fry the cumin seeds and chilli flakes for 1 min, or until they start to jump around the pan and release their aromas. Scoop out about half of the seeds with a spoon and set aside. Add the oil, carrot, lentils, stock and milk to the pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 mins until the lentils have swollen and softened. Whizz the soup with a stick blender or in a food processor until smooth (or leave it chunky if you prefer). Season to taste and finish with a dollop of yogurt and a sprinkling of the reserved toasted spices. Serve with warmed naan breads. Tips: If you want to use a slow cooker... Place half the cumin seeds, half the chilli flakes, the oil, carrots, lentils and 700ml stock into your slow cooker pot. Cover and cook on High for 3 hours until the lentils are tender. Dry-fry the remaining cumin seeds and chilli flakes just until fragrant. When the lentils are done, stir in the milk and whizz up the soup depending on how chunky you’d like it. Make it Moroccan Substitute the chilli flakes and cumin seeds for a few teaspoons of harissa paste. You could add cooked shredded chicken at the end of cooking, too. Make it dairy-free For a richer but dairy-free alternative, use a can of reduced-fat coconut milk instead of the milk

Saving Money Tips - Food Consider frozen food its often cheaper and it doesn’t go off in the same way fresh does. Avoid brand names. Wherever possible take advantage of supermarket basics/economy items Grow your own, now is an ideal time to plan what you want to grow. Yesterdays muffins will ‘recover’ if you put them in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. Source, keep and utilise coupons, but don’t buy things you don’t need just to use up the coupons. Beans, beans, beans. Nourishing, filling, versatile and very cheap. The cheapest way to buy them is dried. You then soak the required quantity overnight and boil then next day. Black eye beans and lentils (lentils don’t need pre-soaking) are the quickest cookers, needing only about 30 minutes. They can then be used in casseroles, soups, pasta sauces, curries, chilli, pasties, salads – you name it! Don’t grocery shop unless you have ten items on your list, saves fuel and money. Left over Bananas - Freeze in peel. Then, simply thaw and peel to use in smoothies and breads. Note: the peel will turn black, but that won’t effect the quality of the banana at all.

IN THE COMMUNITY Note from Stapleford Community Group: Stapleford Community Group would like to thank everyone who took part in the consultation last year with regards the plans to improve Peatfield Road Recreation Ground. You may already be aware that a very successful grant of £21,000 was awarded and the work is set to commence on Monday 2nd March. There will be some slight disruptions during the much needed improvements but we are sure these will be minimal and once completed you will enjoy the park even more.If you have any questions or concerns then please contact Chairman on 07740344427 The funding, from Veolia Environmental Trust will be help make improvements to the site including a new circular footpath around the Recreation Ground, as well as seating and bulb planting. The new path will be similar to that introduced at the nearby Hickings Lane Recreation Ground which has proved to be very popular with park visitors of all ages. Councillor Greg Marshall, Portfolio Holder for Environment said: “The Council is delighted that this bid has been successful. The funding will help us to continue to work with partners including Groundwork to improve our parks and open spaces so they can be enjoyed by all Broxtowe residents.” Broxtowe Borough Council will fund the remaining £10,000 required for the project. Stapleford Community Group** were also pivotal in securing the funding, assisting with consultation work for the bid. Works will begin later this year and local schoolchildren will be invited to take part in the bulb planting. **Peatfield Road Recreation Ground as it is better known, the consultation involved meeting people on the park and delivering a questionnaire to ask local residents what they wanted on the park. The results all gathered and submitted with the funding application. So many changes for the good are happening in Stapleford North Ward.

Book Review by Clare Lyons The Reversal by Michael Connolly This was an intriguing book, and another new-to-me author to get to grips with. It is essentially a court room drama, but with a genuinely compelling set of characters and a few red herrings and surprises to keep the story going at a very strong pace. The main character is Mickey Haller, a well known defence attorney who is asked to work for the prosecution – immediately creating a good dramatic situation and a tension that lasts throughout the story. Then throw in working with an ex-wife or two and the tension builds! The story stood on its own, despite the fact that it does allude to other books that Mickey Haller is in. It is well written and easy to enjoy, despite being about the murder of a child; which is not overly graphic or needlessly bloodthirsty. The legal situations are interesting and the characters have enough ‘kept back’ that they remain believable and clear to imagine. It was a good story, well told. It also had a satisfying ending which certainly makes you want to read more. This is the third Mickey Haller book, and also features Harry Bosch who also has a series of books as the lead character, as well as other stand alone crime/ drama offerings by Connolly. As with most authors who write to a ‘pattern’ I suspect reading too many all at once could become a bit predictable, but the quality means that dipping in and out is well worth a go. Children‛s Choice Superhero Phonic Readers – Ladybird Books We sometimes struggle to find engaging books for the discerning six year old boy – so were extremely pleased to find this set of ten new superhero books, based on phonics and building reading skills whilst also being great fun and very silly. Each book stands alone, and has a superhero (our current favourite is Zain Zoom) who has to use their skill to prevent some villainous activity. At the end of the story there are questions you can share to support understanding of the story, as well as other puzzles and ‘tricky word’ help. There is also a reward chart to complete once the child can read the book without help. These have been hugely popular in our house – although probably being read from memory rather than the words… www.letyourselfgrow.org 56

IN THE COMMUNITY Hi everyone, Just an update on the things that are happening in Stapleford. Work is to start on all the road markings and zebra crossings on Derby Road some time before the spring. The planters have finally been cleared opposite the police station where I believe the Stapleford Community Group is organising plants to be set, with the help from William Lilley School and the Town Team and local businesses, which will improve the street scene in Stapleford. Aldi is submitting planning permission for a supermarket to be started in the spring along with 20 houses. There are also plans for an exciting development at Whiteley Mill or as older people know it Carr Fastners Albert Street/Derby Road, also a new building next to Iceland, watch this space! There will be a commemorative bench put in Walter Parker square, for World War 1, thanks to the combined services, local councillors and the Stapleford Community Group. If you have nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon come to Hickings Lane and watch a group of middle aged men playing football with a twist. top of the league, doing well in the cup and still finding time to have a drink afterwards. Fixtures lists are in the Old Cross and the Horse and Jockey. On a dierent note, myself and Cllr Darby lost the battle to stop the build by Framework on Antill Street. I would like to thank everyone including Mrs Wilson, Headteacher of William Lilley, Fiona of Antill Street, all the 200+ residents who signed the petition and all the councillors who voted against it. Let us hope thats myself and Cllr Darby's fears are proved wrong. I would like to oer my condolences to the Mills family, Brenda gave a lot of her time to the community, who suddenly died in January. Yours Cllr.John McGrath (Maggie).

IN THE COMMUNITY A NEW BUS SERVICE will help provide a vital transport link to Bramcote Crematorium and help families, friends and the bereaved access the site more easily for funerals or to pay their respects to loved ones. The new service will be supported and operated by Nottinghamshire County Council. The new NottsBus Connect 510 service will commence operation on Monday 2nd February providing a direct link between Stapleford, Toton, Attenborough and Beeston, Monday to Saturday. The bus stop is fully accessible for those with disabilities. The new supported service will be operated by the County Council using a fully accessible low floor bus with the latest diesel engine technology and is designed to link the new Tram Park and Ride site at Toton Lane with the Toton and Stapleford areas. The loss of a loved one and planning a funeral can be a difficult time with many things to consider and Bramcote Bereavement Services have worked closely with Nottinghamshire County Council to introduce the new bus service to make it easier for those who have been recently bereaved to attend services at the site, as well as support those who visit the Crematorium regularly to pay their respects to loved ones. Professionalism, compassion and care are at the heart of Bramcote Bereavement Services and it recently launched a new customer focused website www.bramcotebereavement.org to help families, friends and the bereaved easily access all the support they need to make arrangements in a caring environment. A number of other new initiatives will be launching over the coming months. Bramcote Bereavement Services also administers funeral bookings for Broxtowe Borough Council’s five cemeteries and for Erewash Borough Council’s 3 cemeteries. Conducting an average of 3000 cremations a year, Bramcote Crematorium is one of the busiest in the United Kingdom and over the years has embraced many of the latest developments in technology and procedure, in its endeavour to meet the needs and expectations of the people who use it. Bramcote Crematorium is of a contemporary design and set in 18 acres of landscaped grounds, the Crematorium is jointly managed by Broxtowe and Erewash Borough Councils. For more information or to view the bus timetable please visit www.bramcotebereavement.org or contact Bereavement Services on 0115 917 3849, email bramcotecrem@broxtowe.gov.uk Alternatively for timetable information please visit Traveline at www.travelineeastmidlands.co.uk

IN THE COMMUNITY LOVE BROXTOWE BOROUGH IS ‘APP-Y TO HELP’
SEE IT, tap it, map it, snap it, send it – five simple steps that make it easier than ever to report environmental issues such as graffiti, fly-tipping and dog mess to Broxtowe Borough Council using the Love Broxtowe Borough mobile app. Keeping the local neighbourhood clean is top priority for the app and with over 750 reports logged since it launched the app is making it quicker and easier than ever for residents to report issues to the Council. The free app is a quick and easy way for residents to help the Council the Borough clean by reporting issues like litter, pest control and fly tipping. Simply follow the five steps: See it – see an environmental issue that needs reporting Tap it – load the Love Broxtowe mobile app Map it – map your location on the app Snap it - take a picture of the issue Send it – send the report directly to the Council’s Environment Team using the app Residents will then receive email updates once the report has been approved and the issue resolved. They can also follow the progress of the report on the Love Broxtowe Borough website at http://love.broxtowe.gov.uk Thanks to GPS technology, the ‘Love Clean Broxtowe’ app is able to identify the exact location of the problem and alerts the Environment team, so there is no need to call the Council, as all the information needed is contained in the report. Popular reports include dog fouling and flytipping but the app can also be used to report things like abandoned vehicles, dead animals, full litter and dog bins, general litter and pest control issues. The ‘Love Broxtowe Borough’ app is available to download from the App Store, Google Play and Windows Phone Store.
