Welcome to our new gardening feature! Hello Gardeners… It‛s Gardener Steve here! and I‛m bringing you gardening tips, news and events. Hello Gardeners… Welcome to the January & February feature and the winter hasn’t been to bad for us yet! I say that but are we going to pay the price later? We shall see. As I sit here and write this the temperature outside is in double figures and It has been nice to get out into our gardens even just for an hour, makes such a difference. The nights are slowly starting to draw out? And the gardens are starting to wake up as the spring bulbs make an appearance and in some places the early daffodils are in bloom.

In this months issue will have details of our next gardening day trip, read all about the Snowdrop and my plant of the month, but firstly here’s a few jobs you can be getting on with through out February. Happy gardening everybody! Jobs to do: Lift and divide snowdrops once they have flowered and ‘still in the green’ if you want to move them or create more plants. Continue to plant bare-root trees, shrubs and roses as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Mulch perennial vegetables such as asparagus and artichokes with well rotted manure or garden compost

Hellebores, which I absolutely love are showing plenty of colour at the moment and also February is the month for the snowdrop so enjoy what colour your have coming in your garden and remember, Spring is on the way!

6

Start chitting early potatoes - stand them on end in a module tray or egg box and place them in a bright, cool, frost-free place. Start sowing vegetable seeds such as leeks , onions and celeriac under cover.

Join us in March for our garden trip as we head to three locations in the heart of Derbyshire our first port of call will be the Carsington Water Plant Hunter Fair. Carsington Water has to be one of the most scenic plant fair locations which can be found in front of the Carsington Water Visitor Centre over-looking the reservoir which is the ninth largest in England. Nurseries from across the midlands will be in attendance and have a wide range of plants on offer and something a little different and growers will be on hand to offer any advice. Next to the centre you will find the courtyard shops, café and restaurant to have a break and admire the views across the water. It’s then onto Matlock Bath for lunch and free time so why not pop for fish and chips, Take a walk along the river, or travel the Heights Of Abraham the choice is yours! For our final stop of the day we shall be visiting the Cascade Garden at Bonsall. Cascades Gardens, a garden for meditation and wellbeing, this beautiful and natural 4 acre public garden is listed by the Daily Mail as one of Britain’s most inspiring spring gardens it is designed around a spectacular landscape with a ruined corn mill, old quarry, canal, cliff and stream. Every season brings new surprises and for our trip in March, the hellebores will be at their best, along with unusual perennial flowers, trees, shrubs and conifers. Inspired by Japanese gardens and Buddhist philosophy the garden is a celebration of nature, a perfect place to find peace of mind, to relax and reflect. Refreshments are available. A wide range of plants are available in the nursery. With a full day ahead of you, your day starts off at a pick-up point either from The Navigation Inn, Risley Lane, Breaston or from the Seven Oaks Inn, Lows Lane, Stanton By Dale. Cost for this trip is £30.00 and includes a light breakfast and entrance at cascades. For more information or to book your place, You can call the booking line on 07413408751 or email infoblueskiesthelimit@gmail.com places are limited and very popular so early booking is advised.

The Joy Of Snowdrops One of the first flowers to see as we go into the new year, the Snowdrop and when they are in flower we know that the brighter days of spring are on the way. It is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae. There are 20 different species of snowdrops that originate from Europe and Asia and some species are listed as vulnerable or even endangered. Snowdrops are most commonly seen in our parks and gardens, they always put a show on what ever the weather throws at them and can be seen in small clumps or in larger drifts. There are many uses for Snowdrops they are perfect for naturalising in grass, under planting of winter shrubs and trees, planted in patio pots, or small clumps in a rock garden and drifts in larger gardens and parks. So what ever size your garden is to always make a space for these little early gems and if not, there are many Snowdrop gardens and walks around the country during the next month to visit and our first garden trip of the year is dedicated to these winter favourites. Snowdrops prefer well-drained, fertile soil and habitats that provide full or partial sunlight Interesting Snowdrop Facts‌ Snowdrops are symbol of consolation and hope, purity and cleansing. Most types of snowdrops propagate via division of the underground bulb Snowdrop develops two to three narrow, dark green leaves from the bulb. Leaves are usually 6 inches long and have enforced tips which ensure successful growth through the snow Scientific name for the snowdrop is Galanthus nivalis. Name is coined from the Greek words "gala", which means milk, and "anthos" which means flower. Second part of the name, "nivalis", originates from Latin language and it means snow Group of passionate collectors of snowdrops are also known as galanthophiles Galanthamine is a substance isolated from snowdrops that can be used to improve sleep, It can also be used in treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Care and Support at Home – Top tips for boosting your mood. With the start of winter now official it is important to keep an upbeat state of mind in order to lead a positive lifestyle. Eating healthy foods and exercising are obvious ways to remain fit and healthy, but there are also many other adjustments we can make to improve our mental health and state of mind. Here are a few mood boosting tips; Laugh As adults we often forget to just enjoy ourselves and laugh more. Laughing releases endorphins into our body which increase serotonin levels in our brain, causing us to instantly feel happier. Life doesn’t need to always be taken too seriously! Practice gratitude It is important to recognise what we’re grateful for, acknowledge it, and appreciate it. When you wake up in the morning, try and think of a few things that you are grateful for and notice the difference it makes to your mood. Talk to someone Whether it is a friend, relative or even a neighbour, knowing you have someone you can turn to, can help to put your mind at ease. Don’t forget to be there for someone else too, as this can brighten your mood just as much as you have the satisfaction of knowing you have helped someone else.

14

Surround yourself with positive scents and sounds. Sometimes when we feel our mood dipping it is good surround yourself with scents which can uplift your mood. Lavender can be seen as relaxing, whereas peppermint can help to soothe your over active mind. This can work just as well with your favourite perfume. Listen to your favourite music and light a candle; you may find yourself feeling great afterwards! Take deep breaths We don’t often concentrate on our breathing because it’s a natural function, but consciously focusing on your breathing and taking deep breaths can relieve stress and increase relaxation. Simply place one hand on the abdomen and one hand on the lower ribs and take a breath that starts in your abdomen and works its way up your body. Control your breathing by breathing in for 3 to 5 seconds, hold for the same amount of time and exhale the air out through your mouth slowly. Do this for 3 minutes and you will feel the stress melt away. Take every opportunity you have to do some exercise. It does not have to be anything too challenging; just popping out for a walk around the block or even doing some chair exercises when you are watching all the wonderful Christmas programmes on television will make a difference. Getting up and stretching your legs every so often will help your circulation and you will feel better.

A message from Richard McCrae Stapleford Community Group.

The Red Box Project is thrilled that, from Monday 20th January, every statefunded school and college in England will be able to order free period products for their students. Stapleford Community Group would like to thank everyone who made donations to us for this project as it helped us help so many local youngsters. You can still make donations to us as we still get sanitary products to those in need, but this is great news for local Schools and means we can now concentrate on helping others. The Red Box Project has teamed up with the campaign group, Free Periods, founded by teenager Amika George, to urge every school and college in England to sign up to the new Government scheme. The work of the Red Box Project has shown that having freely available period products in school can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to participate in their education, and so to reach their full potential. One school participating in the Red Box Project in Portsmouth reported increased attendance of nearly a third after providing access to free period products for their students.

24

Anna Miles, co-founder of the project, said, “Our volunteers have worked incredibly hard over the past three years, collecting donations of period products from their communities and delivering them to over 5,000 educational settings across the UK. We have always believed, however, that access to these essential items should not rely on the kindness of strangers, and we are so glad that, from today, schools and colleges across England will be supported by the Government to order period products for their students, for free.” Clegg Bamber, co-founder of the project added, “Every school and college in England has been allocated funding for their students and we urge them to use it. There is no means-testing for the scheme – it is for any student who needs it, for whatever reason. We really encourage all primary schools to get involved with the scheme. Periods can start as young as eight or nine, and younger children will usually need some help to cope with their periods at school.” HOW TO RECEIVE FREE PERIOD PRODUCTS IN YOUR SCHOOL/ COLLEGE Please visit this website and sign up

Don’t know how to dispose of your domestic cooking oil?

Cooking oil from households can be recycled at each of Nottinghamshire's 12 Recycling Centres. Did you know that recycled cooking oil can be turned into green electricity, because when recycled, used cooking oil becomes a valuable resource? Not only does used cooking oil create power, it also helps to reduce the UK’s

30

reliance on fossil fuels. Disposal of used cooking oil harmful for the environment, it also costs you money.*Each litre of used cooking oil tipped down the drain costs you 14 pence through water utility bills. (*information from Veolia). Once the used cooking oil is collected from the Nottinghamshire sites, it is taken to Nottingham based eco-firm Living Fuels’ state-of-the-art recovery facility, where it is turned 100% naturally into a clean, green bioliquid, LF100. This bioliquid is then used in Living Fuels’ renewable energy facilities to provide carbon neutral electricity to the National Grid at times of unexpected power demand. Just one litre of used cooking oil can create enough ‘green’ energy to make 240 cups of tea whilst one full recycling centre tank provides enough to power a home for an entire year! No commercial or trade waste is accepted at the Recycling Centres, For further information about commercial recycling and waste disposal contact Veolia, Nottingham. Tel: 0203 567 4370 www.veolia.co.uk. Disposing of and donating paint Tins of paint should never be put in your bin at home, unless they are empty or contain only solid dried-up paint residue. crushed in the back of a rubbish truck, the paint can spill onto the street and cause problems. When paint is buried in a landfill, the toxic chemicals it contains can contaminate the ground. Never pour paint down your sinks and drains as it may pollute our water courses. A much better idea is to donate unwanted paint to our Community Repaint scheme. Community groups may use the paint to refurbish rooms or buildings used by their members. Housing associations may redistribute the paint to their tenants. It may be used by other groups for craft activities, for training or may even be used for stage sets by community theatre groups.

Tins of paint that cannot be reused, will not be put into the reuse scheme but will be sent for specialist treatment. The metal or plastic containers will also be recycled where possible. THE LIGHTNING SEEDS. Ian Broudie originally emerged from the post-punk Liverpool music scene of the late seventies playing in the band “Big in Japan” alongside fellow band members Bill Drummond (KLF) Holly Johnson (Frankie Goes To Hollywood) Budgie (The Slits/ Souxie And The Banshees) and Jayne Casey (Pink Military). Before the band ended in 1979 they created the independent record label Zoo Records which would later feature the bands Teardrop Explodes and Echo & The Bunnymen. In 1989, Broudie returned to his songwriting with a set of home recordings. Out of necessity, with no record contract and no band in place, Ian sang and played everything on the tapes himself recording in his “spare bedroom”. Eventually, there was the opportunity for extra production on the tracks and a few hundred copies of “Pure” were pressed up through Rough Trade on the small independent record label Ghetto. “Pure” was released under the name “Lightning Seeds”, the imaginary group he had envisioned to write his songs for in the hope it would become a reality. Gradually over a period of months, “Pure” started to gain some attention. Initially with radio play from the legendary DJ John Peel and then specialist night time plays on regional radio stations. Pure began to climb the independent record charts and before long it was featured on daytime radio and became a chart success. Imported copies of the single had somehow made their way to the USA and Pure was spontaneously being played on American college stations and championed by KROQ’s legendary DJ Rodney Biggenheimer. It soon became the most requested record in California topping the airplay charts although it was not yet released or even placed with a label in the USA. In 1990 with the release of the album Cloud cuckoo land, the Lightning Seeds

were truly off and running on both sides of the Atlantic although the first gig would come a lot later. In 1991 after producing The Wild Swans and Pink Industry Broudie started on the second Lightning Seeds album ‘Sense’. Inspired and fascinated by the way loops and sampling were being pioneered and used on a lot of hip-hop records (in particular De La Soul) Ian decided that by using this sample based technology and methodology combined with Lightning Seeds structured arrangements and melody led cadences so contrasting in style to the music inspiring him he could create an unusual blend and an exciting direction for the band’s sound.

To that end he began working on the album with co producer Simon Rogers who was adept at sampling and the perfect coconspirator. Joined by Cenzo Townsend on engineering duties, they recorded the Lightning Seeds’ second album Sense. Ian’s brother Rob had kindly donated his front room agreeing to let it be commandeered for a couple of months as a makeshift studio. The song ‘Sense’, which also became the album title, was the first of many song writing collaborations between Ian and his good friend Terry Hall. “Sense”, along with “The Life of Riley”, became the most effective and memorable recordings born out of this approach and pointed the way to the future sound of the band.

To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

43

Following the release of the Sense album, Ian rented a couple of rooms in an old laboratory in Liverpool city centre and set up his equipment in a more formal studio setting. This was particularly fruitful since it allowed him time and space to produce records. During this period, Broudie produced artists such as Dodgy, Alison Moyet, Terry Hall, Sleeper and The Frank and Walters. He also provided free time for some fledgling artists, including The Divine Comedy. In the meantime, The Lightning Seeds were once again without a label with the implosion of Rough Trade and Ghetto records. Nevertheless, writing and recording began on the next album ”Jollification”. There was a different atmosphere around these recordings – although it was the same recording team, improved technology helped Ian to find a more attainable sound and this encouraged him to focus more on Lightning Seeds; committing to becoming a live band, promoting the album and shelving all other distractions. For the first time, Ian gathered musician friends together to form a formidable band originally consisting of Chris Sharrock (future Oasis drummer) Bassist Martyn Campbell (of legendary Liverpool beat band Rain) and Ian’s neighbour Paul Hemmings (also a founder member of the La’s). This was the nucleus of the live band although keyboard players and others came and went and Chris was later replaced by The Who drummer Zak Starkey. Jollification was released in 1994 on Epic Records it was easily their most accomplished album so far selling in excess of 900,000 copies. THE THREE LIONS In 1996, Euro ‘96 was set to be the first major football tournament to be held in England since they had won the World Cup on home soil in 1966. The English Football Association asked Ian if he would write a song for the England team. He had the idea of collaborating with two comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, the hosts of

44

popular TV show Fantasy Football. They then wrote and recorded the song 3 Lions ’96, which became a number one single on two occasions, selling over a million copies in the UK. Another version of the song, 3 Lions ’98, also topped the chart two years later. The album Dizzy Heights was released in 1996 and contained many of the group’s most successful hit singles. Ian co-wrote with Nicky Wire (Manic Street Preachers), Stephen Jones (Babybird) and once more with Terry Hall (The Specials). A reworking of The Turtles’ song “You Showed Me” was also featured. Halfway through recording the album, Broudie’s studio was relocated to a barge on the river Thames, owned by Pete Townshend, and the recording was finished on board. Dizzy Heights went on to achieve platinum sales, also receiving a coveted 5 star review in Q magazine. TILTThe last Lightning Seeds album “Tilt” was released on epic in 1999 and was followed by a long hiatus. During this break from the Lightning Seeds, Ian returned to his hometown Liverpool and started helping to develop two unsigned bands The Coral and The Zutons. Subsequently this resulted in Broudie producing debut platinum selling albums for both bands –The Zutons – “Who Killed The Zutons”& The Coral – “Magic and Medicine”, “The Coral” and “Nightfreaks and The Sons of Becker”. This short stint back in the producer’s seat also saw Broudie produce debut albums for The Rifles (“No Love Lost”) and The Subways (“Young For Eternity”) as well as the recording and releasing the well-received solo album “Tales Told” on the Deltasonic label. THE PRESENT Ian’s Studio is now located in Liverpool on the roof of a warehouse, overlooking the river Mersey, in which he mixed the album “Don’t Forget Who You Are” which he had produced for Miles Kane in 2013. Broudie recently performed a solo concert, which included a collection of his songs and some of his favourite productions,

with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Guest vocalists James Skelly, Terry Hall, Ian McCulloch and Miles Kane joined Broudie who was backed by guest musicians Sean Payne, Nick Power, Bill RyderJones, Martyn Campbell and Riley Broudie. He is currently writing and recording the first Lightning Seeds album for many years. TOPLOADER. Since forming in 1997, Toploader have over two million album sales to their name and a string of top 20 hits both home and abroad. Their debut album ‘Onka’s Big Moka,‘ sold over one million copies and remained in the Top 5 of the UK album chart for over six months earning them 4 Brit Award nominations.

In 2000 the single ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ became a global hit spending over a year in European Airplay Charts transforming Toploader into a household name. In 2013 the same track re-entered the Top 40 for three weekends topped the 10,000,000 hits mark on Youtube, an incredible thirteen years after it was first released, cementing it as one of the biggest songs of recent times. Their second album ‘Magic Hotel’ reached number 3 in the UK Albums Chart and saw Joseph Washbourn (singer), Dan Hipgrave (guitar) AND Rob Green (drums) embark on the biggest tour of their careers playing to over 100,000 people in the UK alone. In 2013 Toploader released two singles ‘Turn It Around,‘ co-written with Eg White (Adele,James Morrison) and produced by

Andy Green (Keane, Scouting For Girls) and ‘This Is The Night,‘ produced by Tim Bran (London Grammar). Both tracks were excellently received by the press and gained strong support with BBC Radio 2 with placements on the ‘A’ Playlist. ‘This Is The Night’ gave them their first No.1 in the Radio 2 Airplay Charts. With a reputation as a genuine crowd pleasing live band ,Toploader have backed the likes of Paul Weller, Robbie Williams, Noel Gallagher, Tom Jones, Simple Minds and Bon Jovi, where they became the last British band to play the original Wembley Stadium. They have also appeared at a host of festivals including Glastonbury, V-Festival, T In The Park and Chris Evans’s CarFest. THE SOUTH. Nottingham is the place where the English Civil War began and ended, and where the Mayflower Pilgrims started their journey to Provincetown in the USA in 1620.The pilgrims had taken the difficult two-month journey across the Atlantic seeking religious freedom. Before they went ashore, men on the ship signed the Mayflower Compact, a governing document that would later serve as a model for the Founding Fathers. Today Nottingham is a UNESCO City of Literature, recognising not only the astonishing impact these writers have made to the literary world, but also celebrating its appeal to visitors from across the globe. Lord Byron and D.H. Lawrence were probably the most rebellious creative writers of their time, (pushing boundaries and smashing taboos with literary works). Another famous Nottingham author Alan Stillitoe who wrote many novels, but Birthday (2001) is a sequel to his famous Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and A Man of His Time (2004) is the story of a womanising Nottinghamshire blacksmith! Alan died in April 2010.

‘Ducks Make a Huge Splash in 2020’ by Angela Barnes. The 29th. Annual Duck race took place on Wednesday 1st January 2020 at Manor Park Toton. The Mayor of Broxtowe councillor Michael Brown started the race by releasing 1500 plastic ducks into the River Erewash. They floated down the river and were caught at the bridge approximately 600 yards downstream. The owners of the first 10 ducks crossing the winning line received a prize. The 2020 Duck race was a resounding success and attracted a crowd of around 2000 people including lots of family pets. Mulled wine donated by The Nags Head at Borrowash and mince pies, donated by Tesco at Toton, were served along with tea and coffee. We had the usual doughnut stand and this year, for the first time, we had hot dogs on sale with the bread rolls also donated by Tesco at Toton. There were tombola and chocolate tombola stalls, courtesy of Thornton’s. There was a prize every time cuddly toy stall, loved by the little ones. In addition, we had a raffle for a giant Poo Bear and Tigger, again donated. An opportunity to ‘adopt’ a retired duck and festive music ensured that there was a great atmosphere. Prior to the main race we had our corporate race. Local businesses donated £25 to sponsor a duck or £35 for two. In the corporate race we had 43 ducks and the winner was UCIG at Long Eaton, who won a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates.

52

Prizes for the Race were donated by local business and the race was sponsored by Michael Keys Garage at Long Eaton.

We raised £4,4019, up on last year by a superb £1,000, all of which will be spent for the benefit of local older people. Angela Barnes, Fundraising Net worker for Age UK Derby and Derbyshire said “The Duck Race has become a great local event and we are so grateful, both to Broxtowe Borough Council for allowing us to use the park and to the Mayor who presented the prizes. We are especially grateful to our sponsors, Michael Keys Garage at Long Eaton, to all the businesses who continue to support us with both the corporate race and for providing the prizes for the main race, to all our volunteers and to the local people of the surrounding area who always turn out to support us.” Next year will be our 30th so will be looking to do something really special! Work Starts On New Business Hub In Stapleford Nine businesses will soon be able to benefit from office space in Stapleford’s new business hub, as Broxtowe Borough Council begins work to transform the old Police Station site. Cllr Milan Radulovic visited the site recently to see progress.

The site, which has been vacant for several years, will be refurbished into nine offices of varying sizes, as well as kitchen and break out facilities for new or expanding businesses, thanks to funding from D2N2’s Local Growth Fund. The Stapleford Business Hub is the second which has been developed by the Council and follows on from the successful hub in Beeston which is now home to 5 businesses. As well as affordable rent rates, the new hub will benefit from dedicated 58

business support, intercom system and parking. The shared space will also offer fantastic networking opportunities with other businesses in the hub. Leader of the council Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE: “This is great news for Stapleford. Not only will the new hub help support new and growing businesses to take the next steps, it also brings a long-term vacant site back in to use and will bring new customers to

Stapleford’s high street. We’ve already received enquiries so if you’re interested in rent one of the offices, get in touch as soon as possible.” The new business hub is just part of an exciting future for Stapleford, with the town selected as part of the Towns Deal programme. Anyone interested in renting in the Hub should contact Rebecca Ogden on 0115 917 3826 or by emailing economic.development@broxtowe. gov.uk

Meanwhile, in a large saucepan or pot, heat the olive oil over a medium heat. Stir in the onions, carrots, courgette, pepper, garlic, and the herbs (thyme, oregano), and add salt and black pepper to taste. Saute all together until vegetables are tender, about 6-8 minutes. Mix in the tomato paste for another 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly, until the tomato paste has dissolved. Add the red wine, making sure to scrape up any bits sticking to the bottom of the pot. Bring to a boil and then lower to a simmer, cooking for 10-15 minutes, or until the tomatoes start to break down. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Stir in the cooked lentils. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti until tender, but still firm, (al la dente )stirring occasionally, about 8-10 minutes. Strain and toss with the sauce. Bramcote Volunteers Mark 20 Years with Tree Planting. Volunteers from the Friends of Bramcote Ridge celebrated their 20th anniversary last week, doing what they do best by planting hazel trees and wildflower bulbs at the Green Flag award winning Bramcote Ridge Local Nature Reserve. Volunteers at the tree planting eventThe group was joined by the Practical Conservation Volunteers and the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Michael Brown to plant the trees in an open area within the woodland. In the future, they will be managed as traditional hazel coppice, providing an important resource for local wildlife. The trees were provided by Broxtowe Borough Council as part of its Clean and Green initiative. Around each tree, a drift of wildflower bulbs, including snowdrop, bluebell and wild daffodil were also planted, which will further add to the attractiveness of the woodland for both wildlife and visitors.

Helene Laanest, from the group said: “It was a pleasure to have the Mayor with us on Sunday. We appreciate all the support we get from Broxtowe Borough Council and the Practical Conservation Volunteers. Twenty years for a volunteer group such as ours is a great achievement and the site has seen a lot of improvements over the years. Bramcote Ridge is a lovely space and we hope the Ridge will continue to attract a dedicated team who care about its' conservation. Newcomers of all ages are welcome. The Friends of Bramcote Ridge formed 20 years ago to help preserve and improve this important site, for wildlife and local people. In total 20 hazel trees were planted to commemorate this remarkable milestone, which also coincides with the completion of a number of improvements carried out on the site thanks to a funding award of

£20,000 from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Throughout 2019 a number of improvements were made, including a wheelchair and buggy friendly path to the play area, improvements to a stepped access from Thoresby Road and resurfacing of an accessible path to a viewpoint overlooking Wollaton Hall. Since forming in 1999, the Friends have maintained a membership of around 50 or so local people, with up to 20 members turning up for their monthly work parties to engage in practical activities including managing wildlife habitats, clearing litter, erecting and maintaining bird nest boxes, and maintaining paths and accesses. The Group have held the prestigious Green Flag Award for the last 11 consecutive years, a real testament to their hard work and enthusiasm. Both The Friends of Bramcote Ride and The Practical Conservation Volunteers are always on the look out for new volunteers: The Friends of Bramcote Ridge are always looking for new volunteers, if you would like to get involved conserving this important site they would love to hear from you – you can make contact through the Bramcote Ridge website: www.bramcote-ridge.org.uk The Practical Conservation Volunteers undertake practical conservation projects on nature reserves, parks and green spaces to fulfil their vision of a better environment where people of all cultures are valued, included and involved. The Healing Power Of The Forest. The Japanese call it Shinrin-Yoku or “Forest Bathing.” It’s the practice of simply wandering through the woods to improve one’s health and wellbeing. Forest bathing involves slowly walking through a forest, taking in the atmosphere through all your senses, and enjoying the benefits that come from such an excursion. More and more studies are proving that spending time amongst the trees can reduce psychologial stress, depressive symptoms and hostility. Other benefits include improved sleep. A walk through the woods also involves a certain amount of exercise, which has been proven to combat fatigue, depression, anxiety and obesity. Trees have a natural stress relief scent. The smell of Conifers are not only pleasant but have amazing health benefits. Evergreen trees and Pines are loaded with compounds that have thought to reduce stress in the human body. The chemicals are called phytonsides and can really help you chill and relax by reducing anxiety and boost immune defence’s. Leader of the Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE said, "Being faced with homelessness is one of the most difficult situations that someone can find themselves in. The Council continues to be a leading authority in homelessness prevention, as well as supporting rough sleepers and I’m pleased we were able to help four vulnerable people this Christmas. I would urge anyone who is facing homelessness or who is already homeless to get in touch with us as soon as possible so we can support them.” If you are homeless now, or are threatened with being made homeless within the next 56 days please contact the Housing Options team for advice as soon as possible on 0115 917 7777 or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/homeless for more information.
