Summer- Keeping Cool. Sleep on a feather or down pillow with a cotton pillowcase. Synthetic pillows will retain heat. The night before you go out for the day in the sun, roll some damp flannels up and pop them in the freezer. Take them with you in a plastic bag. Then, when you start to feel hot, unwrap them and place them over your face. Slow down and avoid strenuous activity which will stimulate your body and raise its core temperature. If you must go jogging, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually before 7am. Take a tepid bath or shower just below body temperature, especially before bedtime. Although a cold shower might sound more tempting, your body generates heat afterwards to compensate for the heat loss. Run your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds each every couple of hours. Because a main vein passes through this area, it helps cool the blood.

Grapevine Tips Summer is here and so are flies! Here are some simple home remedies to keep flies out: Camphor is a great deterrent for flies. Just place a piece of it in bowls and keep in the four corners of the room. Iyou have too many flies, you could light the Camphor and spread the fumes throughout the room. Basil is a common plant in may households. Apart from all its medicinal properties, it is also a good deterrent for flies. Planting Basil at home can help in reducing the numer of flies. If you want to invest in something low cost yet effective, a fly swat is the way to go. Natural oils like lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil and lemon grass oil, are another way to keep flies at bay. Soak a piece of cloth or sponge in the oil and store it in an airtight conatiner. Keep the container open in the room that you want fly free. After use replace the lid and store. Grapevine Tips Summer Barbeques. Food: Always give enough time out of the fridge, at least 20 minutes, for raw barbecue dishes to lose their chill and to be approaching room temperature. If the meat, chicken, fish or vegetable is too cold in the centre, the outside may well burn before the inside is cooked. Marinate overnight whenever possible for maximum flavour (unless stated otherwise in the recipe). Extra virgin olive oil is great, but you should never use it in marinades. It burns and smokes on contact with the barbecue. Use light olive oil, or vegetable oil instead and save the extra virgin bottles for your salads and sauces. Marinate in strong plastic bags, tied securely to prevent leakage when you turn them. Otherwise, always cover food tightly with clingfilm and use non-reactive containers such as glass, or stainless steel. Before placing on the barbecue grill, rub or shake off any excess marinade, particularly if there is any oil in it, to prevent burning or flaring and the consequent smoky bitter flavour.

This course covers everything you need to know in relation to retirement and all the delegates have enjoyed the help and support from the Nottingham & District Pre-Retirement group (a local charity who are celebrating 47 years in existence). The only problem is that not many people are aware that there is a group right on their doorstep who ensure anyone within 3 years of retirement are notified of the many important changes in legislation which will affect State Retirement Pension dates. This will be particularly pertinent in relation to the Flat Rate State Pension which will start in April 2016. Grapevine Tips Summer- Keeping Cool. Sleep on a feather or down pillow with a cotton pillowcase. Synthetic pillows will retain heat. The night before you go out for the day in the sun, roll some damp flannels up and pop them in the freezer. Take them with you in a plastic bag. Then, when you start to feel hot, unwrap them and place them over your face. Slow down and avoid strenuous activity which will stimulate your body and raise its core temperature. If you must go jogging, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually before 7am. Take a tepid bath or shower just below body temperature, especially before bedtime. Although a cold shower might sound more tempting, your body generates heat afterwards to compensate for the heat loss. Run your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds each every couple of hours. Some amazing facts -WW1

with chloride of lime to purify it. About 6,000 men were killed on daily basis during WWI. This amounted to over 9 million deaths throughout the war. An amazing number of 65 million men coming from 30 various countries fought in WWI.

A soldier’s average life expectancy while in the trenches was six weeks. Some of the people who were mostly at risk of early death were the junior officers and the stretcher bearers. In the four years of WWI, 25 million tons of supplies were sent to the British forces serving on the Western Front – three million tons of food and five million tons of hay and oats for the horses. As the war progressed, food rations for the soldiers were significantly reduced to keep up with the supply-man ratio. There usual meal while in the trenches was maconochie - so named after the company that made this thin soup of turnips, potatoes and carrots. Other food servings included bully beef and Marmite. There was also a small ration for rum and tea, but soldiers found the latter with terrible taste since water at that time was treated

Over 25 million miles of trenches were dug and zigzagged through the Western Front alone. A number of these trenches were nicknamed Bond Street or Death Valley while the German lines were dubbed as Pilsen Trench, so on. In 1917, George V was forced to change the royal family’s name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor due to growing anti-German sentiment within Britain. A number of British road names were changed, too. Some of the well-known people who served during WWI were authors AA Milne, the creator of Winnie the Pooh; JRR Tolkien of the popular Lord of the Rings Trilogy; sculptor Henry Moore and the British actor Basil Rathbone.

Generous support by Stapleford Town Council has enabled Stapleford & District Garden Holders Association to revive plans for this year. Staged at the Maycliffe Hall, Toton Lane, the Show is open to ANY gardener (from toddler to extreme senior) who grows flowers, fruit and vegetables in the Stapleford area. There are prizes, certificates or trophies for 63 classes, with entry fees remaining at only 10p per submission. The Association hopes that free entry in an enlarged Junior section will encourage greater participation by Staplefordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children. Schedules are available from allotment sites at the Albany in Pastures Road or Bessell Lane between 10 and 12 noon on Sundays, by e-mailing sdgha2011@hotmail.com or phoning the Hon. Jobs for Late July - Early August Autumn-flowering bulbs, such as autumn crocuses, Colchicum, Sternbergia, Amaryllis and Nerine, can be planted now. Some seeds are best planted just after collection, and others may need specific climatic conditions to break dormancy (e.g. some Alpines). If unsure, then sow seeds in â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;batchesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, i.e. one immediately after collecting, one in winter, and one in the following spring. Cutting back, pruning and dividing Cutting back plants in baskets followed by feeding can encourage new growth and help revive tired displays. Cut back delphiniums and geraniums after the first flush of flowers to encourage a second flowering period. Feed after cutting them back. Deadhead flower borders regularly to prolong flowering. Disbud and dead-head dahlias if growing for large blooms. Leave roses that produce attractive hips. Divide clumps of bearded iris. Plants with a carpet-like growth habit, e.g. some Alpines, can become patchy, with central areas dying off. These patches can be in-filled with gritty compost, to encourage re-growth.

Local girl Kyra Edwards from Chilwell is a hugely talented and hard working young lady, her outstanding achievement in Rowing so far is more than impressive. Dear Sirs, Coaches Endorsement for Kyra Edwards This letter is to provide some background information on Kyra Edwards who is currently 16 years of age, lives in Chilwell and trains at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham as part of the GB Rowing talent development scheme. Kyra has now been in the sport of rowing for four years, having started in the junior section at Nottingham Rowing Club. In August 2011, she was tested and accepted for the GB Rowing ‘Start’ programme based on the anthropometrics, power and physiology that she demonstrated in the selection testing. Her scores on the tests were outstanding for a 14 year old female and demonstrated that Kyra, with the right development, has huge potential in the sport of rowing. This is aided by the fantastic level of motivation and dedication she has shown which have helped her to progress very quickly in a short space of time Kyra’s first race was a national competition, the National Schools’ Regatta, in May 2012. Despite being very new to the sport compared to her rivals, Kyra got through to the final of the Women’s Junior 15 single sculls and finished 6th overall. Unfortunately, Kyra’s racing season in 2012 was cut short due to a back injury and she spent the next 6 months diligently improving her physiology whilst completing her physio exercises and improving her flexibility and core strength. Since recovering from the back injury, Kyra has trained hard through the autumn and winter 2012/3 and has significantly improved both her fitness levels and her technique on the water. This led to a great start to the 2013 summer season, with a gold medal in Women’s Junior 18 double sculls at the Ghent International Regatta in April and a 9th place finish in the GB Junior U18 Regatta, despite still being an U16. Kyra then raced in the single scull at the prestigious National Schools Regatta in May 2013 where she won a silver medal in the U17 category and, the following day, won the championship trophy and gold medal in the U16 event. This was preceded by two wins at Nottingham City Regatta in U18 and U17 single sculls and followed by two wins at Peterborough Regatta in U18 single and double sculls events. Kyra’s main aim for this year was to represent GB at U16 level by being selected for the GBFrance match in July 2013.Which she was successful at and won her race in a double scull. Alternatively, Kyra was invited to the GB U 18 final selection trials and may then qualify for the European Junior U18 team.

From the start of the 2014 season Kyra has begun to learn how to sweep, she competed in an eight at eights head with seniors and won the provincial pendant (Non-Thames rowing club). This added more options to Kyra’s season. She then trialled in sweep for Munich international regatta and was selected to represent Great Britain in a four. The crew came 5th at this regatta to 4 German crews. Kyra was then back in her single scull for National schools regatta and competed in the Girls U17 single scull and won a Gold Medal and the scullery trophy. After this she is now focusing on making the junior world championships and looking forward to racing at Women’s Henely in the senior quadruple schools after winning the same even at fours head earlier in the season. I expect that Kyra will be involved in the GB Junior team for the next 1 and half years and will encounter a great deal of expense (likely to be in the region of £2000 pa) to attend training camps, GB trials, regattas and international events. Any support you feel you could offer would help Kyra to cover the expenses of being part of a junior team and ensure her progress is not hampered by financial considerations. Curried Chicken & Mango salad Cooking time Prep:20 mins Cook:20 min Easy Serves 2 This lightly-spiced, fruity salad is a modern take on Coronation chicken - a low calorie-lunch for two 6 chicken mini fillets 1 tsp olive oil 2 tsp curry powder 4 tbsp Greek yogurt 2 tbsp mango chutney zest ½ lime and 2 tsp juice 1 Little Gem lettuce, leaves separated 1 ripe mango, peeled and sliced ½ red onion, finely sliced 2 tsp toasted sesame seeds

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Toss the chicken in the oil and 1 tsp of the curry powder, season and mix well to coat. Put the chicken on a foil-lined baking tray and bake for 20 mins until cooked through. Leave to cool a little, then slice. Meanwhile, make the dressing. In a bowl, combine the remaining curry powder with the yogurt, chutney and lime zest and juice (add 1 tbsp water if the dressing is a little thick). To serve, arrange the lettuce leaves on 2 plates. Top with the mango and cooked chicken, then drizzle with the dressing. Scatter with the red onion and sesame seeds before serving.

Book Review by Clare Lyons The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger There are lots of wonderful books out there, but it is only a special story that can be re-read many times, most people have a firm favourite they like to revisit from time to time and I would encourage adding the Time Travellers Wife to your list. Although I’m not a fan of Niffenegger generally, there is something so unique and magical about the tale of Henry and Clare and their battle for a life together that even when you know the ending, you can read it again and find more to enjoy. The couple first meet when Clare is just six, and Henry much older – but Henry has a rare condition that means he unexpectedly travels in time. There are other books looking at time travel in which exciting adventures occur, or dramatic changes to our future but this is a surprisingly subtle story really only concentrating on the impact on the main protagonists. It is in parts heart-breaking, and in others quite funny, but worth a look or a re-visit over the Summer?There is a reasonable film adaption with the same title, but it’s no replacement for the depth of the book. If you enjoy a bit of time travel you might also enjoy Making History by Stephen Fry. Children’s Choice Big Bad Owl by Steve Smallman & Richard Watson It’s unusual to find a childrens book with an unlikable main character, but the Big Bad Owl is extremely grumpy to everyone, and generally not that nice. What’s good about the book is that we all have off days and it’s a great way to allow children to think about how we behave to others when we are in bad moods, and also to acknowledge that being in a bad mood sometimes is ok. The characters in the book learn to identify signs that Owl is in a bad mood, and to allow him to be on his own if he wants and to have ‘space’ – something we often don’t allow children to do. The idea of a grumpy tree that you can go and sit in certainly sounded useful for both parents and children in our house… www.letyourselfgrow.org 64

LAWRENCE FANS WALK SETTING OF CONTROVERSIAL NOVEL FANS OF D.H. LAWRENCE’S The Rainbow can celebrate its centenary during a special guided walk on Sunday 20th July, exploring the surroundings Lawrence took inspiration from when he wrote the novel in 1914. The free seven mile walk will take in the sights and sounds of Cossall, starting at 10.30am and will offer visitors a unique opportunity to see first-hand the countryside that inspired Lawrence. The Rainbow, which was published in 1915, was the first of Lawrence’s novels to be banned but is considered today to be one of the classic English novels of the twentieth century. The walk will meet at 10.30am at The Broad Oak Pub, Main Street, Strelley, Nottingham, NG8 6PD. Parking is permitted in the pub’s car park. The walk will take approximately 3 hours One of the sights on the walk, and there are some stiles and the walk goes across country, Church Cottage was home of Lawrence’s fiancee Louie Burrows and is featured in The Rainbow. so please wear appropriate footwear. D.H. Lawrence Heritage is a multi-award winning, two site visitor attraction in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, not far from junction 26 of the M1. The attraction brings together a museum, heritage centre, gift shop, art gallery, meeting room facility and civil wedding venue. D.H. Lawrence Heritage, which includes the D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre and the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum, is open Tuesday to Sunday (closed Monday) from 10.00am until 5.00pm (4.00pm in winter). FANS OF NOTTINGHAMSHIRE’S literary legend, D. H. Lawrence, will come together for a packed programme of over 40 events in and around his hometown of Eastwood this September during celebrations of his life and works at the 11th annual D.H Lawrence Festival. Hosted by D.H. Lawrence Heritage, the Festival will return from Friday 5th - Thursday 25th September, with this year’s event marking the centenary of the outbreak of World War One, which played an important part in Lawrence’s work. This year’s Festival Exhibition will focus on ‘Lawrence’s War’ by exploring how the war affected Lawrence, his life, work and the lives of those at home in Eastwood.

Other Festival Highlights will include: · A shop window display competition in Eastwood with the theme 1914 - 1918. · A host of historic buildings opening their doors to celebrate the heritage in and around D.H. Lawrence’s hometown of Eastwood, as part of the national Heritage Open Weekend. Venues include Lawrence’s family home, The Breach House and St. Mary’s Church, Greasley. · A Mining Heritage Bus Tour, taking in sites such as the Brinsley Headstocks, Pleasley Pit, Clipstone Headstocks and many more. · A film festival celebrating Lawrence Film adaptations. · The first ever ‘Eastwood Does Vintage’ day, with vintage craft stalls, vintage cars, entertainment and much more.
