Grapevine Tips Don’t deadhead roses that only have one flush of flowers, because the rose hips will brighten your garden in winter and provide food for birds. Cut back any growth in hanging baskets as this will encourage new blooms to show through Raise the cutting height of your lawn mower blades to prevent your grass from scorching

Care and Support at Home – Alzheimer’s and Sleep Sleep disturbances are one of the more common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) and we have frequent conversations with relatives of people we support regarding concerns about sleeping patterns. The sleep disturbances might include a tendency to fall asleep during the daytime as well as increased walking during the night. Some dementia sufferers spend as much as 40% of the night awake creating increased risk through falls and injury if they get out of bed. This also causes extra worry and tiredness for family carers. The disruption to the body’s circadian rhythm – the natural cycle that governs sleep and wakefulness – can be one of the most difficult of dementia symptoms for carers to cope with. Scientists don’t completely understand why sleep disturbances occur with ADRD. As with changes in memory and behaviour, sleep changes somehow result from the impact of Alzheimer’s on the brain. Some studies indicate that over 30% of people with Alzheimer’s will experience increased confusion, anxiety and agitation beginning late in the day. Although the behaviour will be different from person to person I have shared below some coping strategies that we use: • Keep the home well lit. Lighting for ADRD sufferers should be much brighter than normal indoor lighting to counteract the loss of visual activity that occurs with ageing. Try to keep light at a similar level throughout the room as uneven brightness patterns can produce frightening shadows causing agitation and confusion. • Make a comfortable and safe sleep environment. The person’s sleeping area

16

should be at a comfortable temperature and night lights placed within easy reach. Door sensors and motion detectors are now available to alert family members when a person is wandering. Consider a clock next to the bed which shows whether it is day or night. Have a look at www.alzproducts.co.uk • Maintain a schedule. Encourage your loved one to adhere to regular routine of meals, waking up and going to bed. Plan the day and include as much activity as possible with part of it ideally outside the home. • Avoid stimulants and big dinners. Avoid nicotine and alcohol and restrict sweets and caffeine consumption to morning and afternoon hours…..the cup of tea at 6pm can make a difference and affect sleep. Ensure the person eats well at lunch time and keep the evening meal simple. Going for a walk, having a warm milky drink, or having a bath or shower before bed may help the person relax. I trust some of the above can help you and your loved one and as usual, if you would like some more information or just to share something with us please get in touch. - Primo Sule – primo.sule@homeinstead.co.uk Tel: 0115 9222396 In the end it’s not the years in your life that count. Make some new friends, learn somethng new and have fun! Learning a traditional skill The three carpet beds at the Nottingham Castle are always a highlight of the City’s summer displays. The circular beds feature pictures created with low-growing plants, planted with the guidance of grids similar to a ‘painting by numbers’ technique. Nottingham is one of the few places still using this traditional specialist skill, and apprentice Gordon is the latest to learn. The three beds this year celebrate 800 years of the Magna Carta; Nottingham’s success in being declared the first-ever City of Football, and the summer exhibitions at the Castle Museum and Art Gallery. Prizewinning art and photos on display Pop into The Place to Eat on the third floor of John Lewis Nottingham during July or August to see an exhibition of the prizewinning entries in the Nottingham in Bloom art and photography competitions. The winners received their prizes from the Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Mohammed Saghir, at an event at the City Council’s plant nursery at Woodthorpe Grange Park. Both competitions are sponsored by Capital One.

Why is drinking lots of water a day so good for you? PART 1

1. Water helps with weight loss -Great news for anyone trying to lose a few pounds - water naturally reduces your appetite. A lot of people confuse feeling thirsty with feeling hungry so they eat when their body wants them to drink something. When you're dehydrated, fat cells become harder to break down and so anyone actually trying to diet will find it a lot harder if they don't drink very much. 2. Water is a natural wrinkle-buster -According to a recent study, almost 1 in 5 women who drank 1.5 litres of water per day saw a reduction in wrinkles after 6 weeks without making any other changes to their diet.As well as wrinkle-busting, it's said to give us sparkly eyes, clear our skin of spots and make us look glowing and healthy. But water has lots of benefits for your health too. 3. Water stops headaches and dizziness -Don't reach for the pills straight away, your headache could be a symptom of being dehydrated so drinking water should make it go away. Even tension headaches and dizziness, which can be brought on by fatigue can be cured or helped by drinking water - this is because fatigue is also a sign of dehydration. 4. Water clears your skin - Most people know that drinking more water can be good for clear skin and it can also help the symptoms of acne. If you've got dry skin, drinking water will give it more moisture but that's not all. Water flushes toxins out of your body and anything else that shouldn't be there so it clears your skin of any dirt and bacteria. 5. It fights infections -Drinking water can help fight infections all over your body, not only because it flushes out toxins but because when you're dehydrated you're more likely to catch a bug. It's especially good for getting rid of and preventing urine infections and kidney stones. Being well hydrated is also great for allergies and colds, because it clears the airways. Even cold sores can be reduced by drinking more water because they tend to pop up in places where your skin is particularly dry.

Grapevine Tips Going on a picnic?: Use greaseproof paper and string to wrap sandwiches and cakes (this will stop them getting sweaty). Struggling with a plate, fork and glass while sitting on an uneven patch of grass is stressful, so go for finger-food rather than bowls of salad. Chicken skewers can be munched with ease. A cucumber to cut into chunks, cherry tomatoes and breadsticks are good to nibble on. Keep the pudding simple. A good cake, a watermelon cut into chunks, strawberries and a bowl of cherries on ice (transported in a Thermos flask) are a feast

Teens and Contact Lenses As a child I wore thick spectacles. My eyesight was and is appalling. During PE I used to remove my specs for fear of breaking them, which meant I could see nothing beyond arm’s length and made me something of a liability on the hockey pitch, both to myself and others. One day my optometrist suggested I try contact lenses and my parents agreed. In those days contact lenses were hard and took a lot of getting used to, but I persevered and was soon wearing them all day. The difference it made was astonishing. I was never a hockey star, but at least I didn’t keep colliding with the other players. I developed a talent for netball and even made the county team, thanks mainly to the fact I could now see the goal posts! Contact lenses had other benefits too. My peripheral vision had been very restricted, due to a combination of my spectacle lenses and the frames which held them, so my spatial awareness increased, and I became more able and confident in all activities from dancing to bike riding. I also felt prettier. Now that’s quite a shallow response to contact lens wear and I know many teens who love their specs, but in all honesty as a teenage girl, that’s how I felt. So I was amazed when my optometrist told me that very few children and teens wear contact lenses, even though one in five children aged between five and fifteen, and one in three 16-19-year-olds need vision correction. That’s a lot of youngsters who would potentially benefit from contact lens wear. There’s no minimum age for contact lens wear. Many children, even the very young would benefit from the improved vision and freedom-from-specs which contact lenses can provide. Age is much less important than how responsible they are. Your optometrist will make sure that you and your child are

34

instructed properly in the safe insertion and removal of the lenses, how to look after them and what to do in an emergency e.g. if the eye becomes red or sore. Properly fitted and monitored contact lenses are a safe form of vision correction. Modern lens materials are very breathable so ensure the eye stays healthy. Contact lenses should be fitted by an optometrist experienced in fitting youngsters, and reviewed every three to six months, depending on the age of the child. Hygiene is everything. Washing hands before handling the lenses and the eye area is very important. The eye is a moist, warm environment and is therefore a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Some lenses are replaced monthly, so need to be cleaned properly every night. Modern solutions make this very easy, though there can be an inclination to become a bit slap-dash, so parental supervision is recommended. Daily disposable lenses on the other hand are ideal for children and teens because they are thrown away each night and a fresh pair inserted the next day, so the risk of infection is minimal. Even astigmatism and quite complex prescriptions can be corrected with contact lenses nowadays. Make sure you choose a practitioner who is really knowledgeable about contact lenses and who keeps up to date with the latest developments in the field. By Louise Addison

The meeting is open to everyone, but if you are not a member of the Society you will be very welcome on payment of £2.50 at the door.

I would like to say “well done to all the new Councillors who were voted in. I am sure you will serve the Borough gracefully as others did in the past, also well done to Anna and her team, who has returned as our MP, and also took Broxtowe Borough Council. Lets hope we can all work together to improve our Borough and the areas we represent. The Stapleford Borough Councillors will be united to improve Stapleford. If this is so, then let us stop the arguing and start building for our children and their childrens future, by introducing apprenticeships in our area which are necessary to aid these projects. Finally, I was saddened to hear about the events at Hemlock Happening on 6th June 2015 which ended in the fireworks being cancelled. I for one will support the event going ahead in the future. Meetings have been set up with the organisers, police and the councillors. Lets learn from it and move on. Yours Cllr John McGrath (Maggie).

Pablo Bronstein and the Treasures of Chatsworth For Season 1 of The Grand Tour at Nottingham Contemporary Pablo Bronstein has chosen 62 works of fine and decorative art to bring to our galleries – Chatsworth’s largest UK loan for 30 years. Works by Rembrandt and Franz Hals, Delft porcelain, the coronation chairs for William IV and Queen Adelaide, and a colossal Roman marble foot are among the objects that will appear within and alongside work by Pablo Bronstein, across all four of our galleries. Unusually for a contemporary artist, Bronstein’s work is fascinated by pre-20th century European design and architecture. The overwhelming theatricality of the Baroque, is a particular favourite, and it’s a period that Chatsworth and much of its’ collection epitomises. Bronstein’s erudite drawings, performances, furniture and public art relate to both the past and the present in unsettlingly paradoxical, sometime humorous ways. For this exhibition Bronstein has created new works inspired by Chatsworth. One gallery will be covered in realisations of Chatsworth’s iconic architecture viewed from different perspectives. Another will be entirely encircled by a frieze like drawing reimagining what Rome’s legendary Via Appia, lined with the elaborate tombs of grandees, might have looked like during the decline of the Roman Empire. This was a favourite subject for capriccios, or architectural fantasy drawings, during The Grand Tour period. In another gallery, ornate 17th and 18th century silverware will be infinitely multiplied inside the mirrored interior of a mock-Grecian temple. Much of Chatsworth’s collection was amassed by past Dukes of Devonshire during their own Grand Tours of Europe. This was an era when the display of highly decorated objects characterised wealth and power. These objects now appear in a new light in Nottingham Contemporary, within Bronstein’s exhibition design. The change of context invites us to consider how wealth and power find aesthetic form today. Pablo Bronstein’s exhibition continues at Chatsworth. A rare survey of his drawings will be shown in Chatsworth’s New Gallery. Bronstein has also made a very large drawing for the Old Master Cabinet Room, which will be shown alongside a display of architectural drawings from Chatsworth’s own collection. FIRST TENANTS GET KEYS TO NEW HOME FAMILIES looking to setup home in Broxtowe Borough received a welcome boost as Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) and Westleigh Partnerships unveiled 23 homes to house hunters in Stapleford. Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Sue Bagshaw and Housing Portfolio Holder, Eric Kerry welcomed back Maureen Nicholas and Mike Molloy, former tenants of Peatfield Court Retirement Living complex, and handed over the keys to the newly built bungalows which replaced the complex built in the 1970s. The Council’s retirement living bungalows form part of a bigger development, built by Westleigh and owned by the NCHA, which incorporates a mix of flats and bungalows for a supported housing scheme as well as 2 and 3 bedroom houses, some for rent, some for shared ownership.

homes demonstrate the effectiveness of the excellent partnership between Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottingham Community Housing Association and Westleigh Partnerships”. The project to redevelop Peatfield Court began with the Council’s housing department working with the former tenants to relocate them to other Retirement Living Schemes in the Borough. The family homes were then advertised on the Council’s Homesearch website and people on the housing register were invited to express an interest in the new homes. NCHA’s Assistant Director of Development and New Business, Allan Fisher, celebrated the completion of the new scheme: “We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Broxtowe Borough Council developing properties in an area where there is a shortage of affordable housing. Working here in Stapleford has allowed us to build homes that we hope all the new tenants will enjoy for many years to come.”

Councillor Bagshaw said: "I am extremely impressed by the quality and high standard of the new homes and it was a real pleasure to hand keys to the tenants. I wish them all the best in their new home, along with the other new tenants.” Councillor Eric Kerry added: "We are really proud to showcase these fabulous new homes. They represent another key stepping stone in the provision of affordable housing within the Borough. These

Gary Turner, Head of Investment and Partnerships at Westleigh, commented, “We are committed to providing high quality housing that will transform and regenerate local areas. Therefore we were thrilled to work in partnership with Broxtowe Borough Council and the NCHA on this scheme which offers a fantastic mix of house types to suit a variety of needs, including a range of homes built specifically for retirement and supported living.” The development is one of three social housing projects for the Borough costing around £2 million. Future developments are planned in partnership with Nottingham Community Housing Association and money from the Homes and Communities Agency which could enable the building of 68 units of accommodation on 6 key sites throughout the Borough. The Council is committed to providing new and affordable homes across Broxtowe Borough. Book Review by Clare Lyons A Shadow on the Highway by Deborah Swift

I quite like an historical drama, as this is a good example. There is a nice blend of interesting situations relevant to the English Civil War (particularly fascinating as we celebrate the opening of the National Civil War Centre in Newark), and the creation of romantic characters to shape the drama. The story centres on the desolate situation of Lady Katherine – a loveless marriage and a despicable father in law – who has taken matters into her own hands to keep herself solvent… There is also her new maidservant Abigail, a deaf girl from the village with a handsome, zealous brother; what could make for a more exciting story? Despite initially feeling everything was a little far fetched, the story is well written and certainly captivating and I did genuinely want to know how it would end. Although this book stands alone, it is the start of The Highway Trilogy. Swift has also written a number of other well researched historical fiction, if you like Philippa Gregory then try The Gilded Lily.

Children‛s Choice Mog The Forgetful Cat by Judith Kerr

We had a trip to the loft and found some of my childhood books – kept because they were magical to me and I couldn’t part with them. How wonderful to introduce children to something you treasured – and for them to like it too! Mog is a very lazy and very forgetful cat, she doesn’t even remember that she has a cat flap… which turns out to be a jolly good thing one night. The stories are humorous and gentle with dated but still attractive illustrations. Mog goes on to appear in seventeen stories about her time with the Thomas family but beware of Goodbye Mog, as the family get a new kitten when Mog goes to ‘sleep’ – we’ve not tackled that one yet… Judith Kerr is also well known for The Tiger Who Came To Tea, which we’ve never really never got on with.

How to get rid of flies. Flytraps come in a variety of types and price points, but one easy and cheap trap to try simply requires dish soap and a mason jar. Fill the jar with 1 inch of a fruit-scented dish soap and 1 inch of water, then wait for the flies to get trapped in the pool. There are some fragrances which flies do not like at all so use those fragrances for your advantage to keep flies away. For this, you can place crushed mint sachets or bay leaves in windows and doorways. These will stop flies from entering in. Lavender can also be used for the same purpose as it has strong smell.

Barbecue Food Safety Food poisoning cases double over the summer, so remember these simple steps to help keep food safe. Food poisoning is usually mild, and most people get better within a week. But sometimes it can be more severe, even deadly, so it's important to take the risks seriously. Children, older people and those with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to food poisoning. "The safest option is to cook food indoors using your oven," says a spokesperson from the Food Standards Agency (FSA). "You can then put the cooked food outside on the barbecue for flavour." This can be an easier option if you're cooking for a lot of people at the same time. If you are only cooking on the barbecue, the two main risk factors are: undercooked meat spreading germs from raw meat onto food that's ready to eat, This is because raw or undercooked meat can contain germs that cause food poisoning, such as salmonella, E.coli and campylobacter. However, these germs can be killed by cooking meat until it is piping hot throughout.

68

Cooking meat on a barbecue When you’re cooking any kind of meat on a barbecue, such as poultry (chicken or turkey), pork, steak, burgers or sausages, make sure: the coals are glowing red with a powdery grey surface before you start cooking, as this means that they’re hot enough frozen meat is properly thawed before you cook it you turn the meat regularly and move it around the barbecue to cook it evenly Remember that meat is safe to eat only when: it is piping hot in the centre there is no pink meat visible any juices are clear “Don’t assume that because meat is charred on the outside it will be cooked properly on the inside,” says the FSA spokesperson. “Cut the meat at the thickest part and ensure none of it is pink on the inside.” Some meat, such as steaks and joints of beef or lamb, can be served rare (not cooked in the middle) as long as the outside has been properly cooked. This will kill any bacteria that might be on the outside of the meat. However, food made from minced meat, such as sausages and burgers, must be cooked thoroughly all the way through.

Message from Stapleford Community Group. A brand new Subway Store is set to open later this month here in Stapleford bringing local jobs for local people. After talking with Subway for a while now I can let you know that recruitment is now underway and anyone interested in working for Subway should email a CV along with times and days available to work to staplefordsubway@gmail.com It's great news for the Stapleford North Ward as employment in the area is really needed. Subway is something different for the area where The Jaguar Pub once stood and joins the Coop and the Starfish Restaurant Chip Shop, both which have been a huge success. It is now hoped that Nottinghamshire County Council get on with sorting out the traffic problems in the area which has been very busy, despite the fact there is a large on site car park many people are parking on Hickings Lane which is causing a major concern among local people. Councillor Richard MacRae has been talking with the Highways Department at Nottinghamshire County Council with regards many parking issues in the area and although he understands it takes many months for parking restrictions to be put in place he would like to see these carried out sooner rather than later to avoid any accidents from happening. NIP GARDEN CRIME IN THE BUD AS THE WEATHER WARMS UP, Broxtowe Borough Council is urging residents to protect their valuable garden equipment this summer by following some simple garden crime prevention tips.Power tools, lawn mowers, garden tools and bikes are just some of the expensive equipment left in gardens or stored in unsecured sheds. If stolen some of these items could be used by the intruder to break into your house. Effective garden security includes everything from boundary fences, gates, outbuildings and the valuables stored inside them. To protect your valuables by following these tips: · Fit well positioned external lighting · Strong gates, fences and walls kept in good repair can deter intruders from accessing your property, keep gates locked at all times · Compliment security measures, such as lighting, locks and alarms by planting prickly plants to deter burglars. If doing so it is best to plant these around vulnerable areas such as: windows, fences boundary walls and drainpipes · Keep your shed in good condition · Fit a closed shackle padlock to the door - fittings should be bolted through the door and any screws concealed · Fit grilles or mesh to the windows · Fit a shed alarm · Chain large items such as bicycles together - it is more difficult for a thief to carry away a lot of large heavy items all at once · Lock ladders to a secure fixture in the shed or garage so they cannot be used to reach windows in your home · Mark your garden tools and equipment with your postcode and house name or number · Don’t leave ladders and tools lying around in your garden - these could be used to break into your home To find out about crime in Broxtowe checkout the Neighbourhood Alert System at www.broxtowecommunity.co.uk or visit the Nottinghamshire Police website at www.nottinghamshire.police.uk To protect your property and belongings such as mobile phones, laptops, iPods/MP3 players you may want to consider registering the items with the UKs National Property Register, IMMOBILISE by registering on-line for free at www.immobilise.com In an emergency or to report a crime in progress contact the police on 999. The Erewash Valley Cycling Club is launching a summer recruitment drive to mark its 35th anniversary. New members of all ages and abilities are being sought to boost numbers on the club's Wednesday and Sunday runs. "Our midweek social rides are aimed at older and retired folk who want to enjoy a gentle ride in good company," says organising secretary Malcolm Griffin. "Sunday riders have a choice of short or long runs depending on their abilities... and nobody gets left behind!" Most rides use cycle tracks, canal towpaths and quiet roads where possible, though some riding in traffic is inevitable. "We would like to see more women joining the club, particularly the Wednesday section," adds Malcolm.

Buses using the new facility include the Trent Barton Indigo and 18, the Yourbus Y5, Y36, NCT 36, L10 and L11 and the NottsBus Connect 510. New Interchange opens to buses. BEESTON’S new bus and tram interchange opens to buses on Sunday, July 12, replacing the old bus station. The new interchange is an on-street transport hub with two tram stops and six bus bays and has been developed over the last decade in consultation with local bus operators and modelled on Strasbourg’s bus and tram interchange -- considered a model of excellence for transport integration. It features high-quality glass shelters, real time information, journey planning information and electronic ticket machines to purchase Kangaroo integrated transport tickets and tram tickets. Situated on Styring Street in Beeston, it is in the heart of the town, next to the redeveloped Square shopping precinct, and a two-minute walk from High Road.Buses will start operating from the Interchange on July 12, with the tram currently utilising it for testing and public services due to start operating shortly. 72

From 12th July, Yourbus will also start operating a Beeston Shopper service connecting residents on Bramcote Lane, Park Street and Wollaton Road with the Interchange. “The new interchange will be a fantastic new facility for Beeston,” said Coun Kevin Greaves, chairman of the County Council’s transport and highways committee. “It will make it easy for passengers to swap between buses and trams, giving people more public transport options than ever before.” The Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Coun Richard Jackson, said: “We are delighted that the new bus and tram interchange is opening this month as this is another positive step towards seeing the completion of all the work in Beeston town centre and to the arrival of the tram. “The new-look Beeston is emerging rapidly and this opening is just another step toward the town and surrounding areas becoming one of the most vibrant and thriving communities in Nottinghamshire.”

Coun Jane Urquhart, with lead responsibility for NET at Nottingham City Council, added: “We’re delighted that Beeston is benefiting from a brand new state-of-the-art facility for public transport users, which has been made possible through the NET project. The interchange will be a fantastic facility for bus users and it will be even better when tram services open for the public. “When the tram starts running through Beeston shortly, this modern, efficient interchange will make it easy for people to swap between buses, trams and even taxis. Trams will run every seven and a half minutes throughout most of the day, meaning passengers can quickly get to the QMC, the city centre and beyond.”

on-board WiFi usage for our customers too! Jeff Counsell, managing director of Trent Barton, said: “I’m delighted that, at last, we are about to see the benefits of the new interchange. “Our Indigo, Eighteen and 20 services will connect here with other bus services and the tram for anyone wishing to transfer locally and, of course, serve our customers’ needs. “A key ingredient of any successful public transport system are the customer facilities and I am sure this interchange will serve to benefit all users of public transport in the area.”

David Astill, commercial manager for NCT, said: “We’re delighted to be using this new interchange. The modern facilities and provision of real-time information will complement the £2.5m investment that NCT has made in new vehicles for service 36, offering our customers easy access on and off the bus, next stop announcements as the buses progresses along the route and free To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk GRAPEVINE-NG9 July MAIN 2015.indd 73
