Summer Programme 2015 –Nottingham Centre (National Trust) The Nottingham Centre’s winter programme of talks concluded on a lovely spring evening in April with an illustrated talk by Ted Grey entitled, ‘Beautiful Britain’. Ted is a talented photographer, and members walked out into the sunshine keen to get out and visit some of the fascinating places they had seen: the Centre’s summer programme of outings, holidays and walks certainly offers a wide variety of activities to choose from. In April they enjoyed a day at Bletchley Park, the secret (at the time) centre of code breaking activities during the Second World War, a Peak District walk, and a backstage tour of the Theatre Royal, Nottingham with the Centre’s Local Family and History Group. Two holidays were on offer in May – a three day walking holiday on the Isle of Wight, and a three day holiday in Liverpool. Somehow, Sylvia Hale, the Centre’s tireless chairman, managed to fit in a day excursion to the Bodleian Library in Oxford as well. A visit to Gunby Hall and Gardens in Lincolnshire will be one of the highlights in June. The Nottingham Centre is delighted to have been able to donate £750.00 to Gunby towards restoration of the Bluthner grand piano, and additional outside seating. It is always a source of great pride and pleasure to visit National Trust properties and see what has been achieved with the Centre’s donations. In July a visit to Kew is planned, and in August there will be trips to Kelmarsh Hall and Gardens, Snowshill Manor, and Southwell Workhouse. Members can enjoy a six day holiday in Dorset in September, and the summer programme draws to a close in October with two walks, a Richard the Third themed walk in Leicester, and a local one from Edwalton to West Bridgford. After all that activity, members will be glad to sit down in the Mechanics on September 10th for the first talk of the 2015/2016 winter programme – Cook’s Tours, by Danny Wells. Danny will shine a light on the relationship between this famous father and son, who played key roles in opening up the world to popular tourism. The Nottingham Centre, which includes an active Garden group, is a friendly group affiliated to National Trust. It is necessary to be a member of National Trust to join the Centre but visitors are always welcome to meetings. For more information contact Heather Brooks, tel:0115 9436272 (mobile:07867563885) or visit the Nottingham Centre website: www.nottinghamnt.co.uk

OVER £98,000 FUNDING FOR PARK IMPROVEMENTS IN BROXTOWE PARKS IN BROXTOWE BOROUGH will see some welcome improvements thanks to over £98,000 funding for two projects in Watnall and Attenborough from Broxtowe Borough Council and WREN. At Watnall Green £14,000 funding has been awarded by WREN with a further £10,000 from the Council to improve site access and paths, as well as wildlife features and seating following a consultation with local residents last summer to identify what improvements they wanted to see at the site. In Attenborough, Long Lane Recreation Ground will benefit from a complete refurbishment of the play area thanks to £50,000 worth of funding from WREN and £24,000 from Broxtowe Borough Council. The project has been developed in partnership with Groundwork Greater Nottingham after extensive consultation with local residents and will include new modern play equipment to be enjoyed by children of all ages and abilities. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economic Development, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “The Council is committed to providing high quality parks and open spaces for Broxtowe residents to enjoy and is delighted that this funding has been secured to make much needed improvements at these two sites.” Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s Grant Manager for Nottinghamshire, says: “We are delighted to be supporting the Borough Council and pleased that our funding will benefit two communities in the Borough. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really looking forward to seeing these take shape soon.” Work on Watnall Green is likely to start this summer, with Long Lane commencing later in the autumn. For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3507, email env@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/leisure

Pre-driver training sessions to run again over summer break WOULD-BE drivers as young as 15 are again being given the chance to get behind the wheel of a car this summer in a scheme being run by Nottinghamshire County Council. The pre-driver training experience for pupils between the ages of 15 and 17 is being offered as part of the Council’s ongoing programme of education for young people in a bid to cut road traffic casualties in the county. The Council has been holding the sessions for several years now during school holidays and they are proving to be sell-out events. The latest one-day sessions are being during the school summer break. They are taking place at the Nottingham Forest football ground on Friday, July 24 and Friday, August 28, and at the Elizabethan Academy in Retford on Friday, August 21 and Monday August 24. The sessions run from 9am until 4pm, are open to all 15-17 year-olds who live or are educated in Nottinghamshire and costs £45. Pupils don’t need a provisional driving licence as the training takes place away from the public highway Spaces are limited so booking is essential and will be taken on a first come, first served basis. Bookings can be made by phoning 0300 500 8080. “This course gives young people their first experience behind the wheel of a car in a safe, controlled, environment with fully-qualified driving instructors,” said Coun Kevin Greaves, chairman of the County Council’s transport and highways committee. “Research shows that young people form and crystallise their driving attitudes well before they actually take to the road themselves, so it’s important that they receive the right message from the right people.” According to research from the Department for Transport, youngsters form their driving attitudes long before they actually get behind the wheel of a car. By the age of 17, when they can legally drive, they have very often picked up bad habits from watching their parents or other people with whom they regularly travel as passengers. As well as two hours in-car training, the pre-driver training days also include advice on how to choose a good driving instructor and workshops on the responsibilities that come with being a driver, including the effects – and repercussions – of drink or drugs on a person’s driving abilities. There will also be practical demonstrations of safe stopping distances and cornering techniques.

The salt-loving ‘invader‛ on Nottinghamshire‛s roadside verges SALTING roads in icy conditions is helping a coastal flower become the fastest spreading plant in Britain – and it’s right here in Nottinghamshire. Danish scurvy-grass has moved inland along roads where salt has cleared vegetation on the verges. Traditionally a seaside plant, it can cope with the high levels of salt which build up at the roadside, whereas other plants cannot. The gritting of roads in winter by local authorities such as Nottinghamshire has allowed the plant to gradually spread inland over the last 50 years. It is particularly noticeable along verges and central reservations on faster-moving roads where its small seeds are easily spread by the high speed of cars in the fast lane. “Despite its name, Danish scurvy-grass is a native species to Britain, but always used to grow in coastal areas such as sea shores and salt marshes due to its preference for salty areas,” says Nick Crouch, the County Council’s senior nature conservation practitioner. “However, road gritting, which often causes a build-up of salt in soils in the first half-metre or so of verges, has created ideal conditions for this plant. “This has allowed it to spread rapidly inland over the last half-century, and if you look at a map of its distribution, it clearly picks out the network of our main roads and motorways! “Where it grows in abundance, its small white or mauve petals put on quite a display, creating a ribbon of flowers.” Flowering between May and July, the botanical name for Danish scurvy-grass is Cochlearia Danica and it is a member of the cabbage family. Naturally high in Vitamin C, it gets its name from sailors in days gone by chewing it to avoid scurvy. Its leaves have a strong, peppery, taste similar to horseradish or watercress and are sometimes used in salads. 24

SUNSHINE FOR EASTWOOD PARADE Hundreds of local people lined the streets of Eastwood recently to cheer on the 170 (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group at a special parade to honour serving soldiers and veterans. The troops marched through the town centre to a Service of Dedication at the WWI memorial at Mansfield Road Recreation Ground and Memorial Garden. Around 150 soldiers from the Group, based at Chetwynd Barracks in Chilwell marched in bright sunshine to exercise their right of Freedom of Entry to the Borough, along with veterans from the Royal Engineers Association and led by the Nottinghamshire Band of the Royal Engineers. The soldiers were joined by the Lord Lieutenant Sir John Peace, Colonel David Brambell, Commander of the Group and the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw at a short ceremony to dedicate the memorial that was installed last year as part of the WWI commemorations. After the ceremony the Mayor took the opportunity to show the Borough’s appreciation for the commitment and dedication that Colonel David Brambell has made since he has been at Chetwynd Barracks. Over the last few years the Colonel has been the driving force behind strengthening the ties between the community and the troops.

Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw said: “Our Armed Forces make such outstanding contributions and sacrifices for our Country and I am delighted that we can honour them at this parade.” “Broxtowe is unique in Nottinghamshire in having a working barrack in its boundary and Colonel Brambell has made it his duty to build strong relationships with the community over his time here. The troops have marched in all of the town centres and helped to reinforce the link. “The Colonel is due to move to a new posting this year so I had great pleasure in presenting him with a glass carriage clock to demonstrate our sincere gratitude for his hard work and for being the man behind this important partnership.” For more information about the Parade contact Civic Office on 0115 917 3210, email civic@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk

Fake pet passports heighten rabies risk Forged ‘pet passports’ are on the increase in Nottinghamshire heightening the risk of rabies as more illegally imported puppies are brought into the UK. Nottinghamshire County Council’s Trading Standards team have seized a fake pet passport at a rate of one a month over the last year – the problem was almost non-existent three years ago as pet passports were only introduced nationally in January 2012. It is also having increased contact with Chesterfield –based Calagran Quarantine Kennels – one of just five specialist quarantine kennels operating in England, and the main base for illegally imported puppies from Notts to be kept while they receive the full course of injections and be passed fit by a vet. Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards Officer Paul Gretton said: “People are often tempted by cheaper pedigree dogs sold on the internet. Unfortunately they are often from a dubious source. Owners are then faced with the agonising decision that it could cost hundreds and in some cases thousands of pounds in quarantine and veterinary bills - or face having their pet destroyed. “It can be heart-breaking for someone who has just begun to bond with their puppy to find themselves in this position – as well as the welfare of the dogs being in question. Also buying cheaper pups increases demand and the likelihood of puppy farming / poor welfare standards. The county council wants people to have happy, healthy dogs and we want to help prevent rabies from ever entering the UK.” Unscrupulous dealers forge pet passports and falsify details and bring puppies into this country when they are too young and without the full course of vaccination.
32
Pedigree pets from abroad are then being advertised on the internet for as little as £500 where the cost for a pedigree puppy reared in the UK in a legitimate sale would be anywhere from £1,000 to £1,500. Here is the County Council’s advice on what to do: · Research the purchase of a puppy thoroughly before buying. There is clear advice on the internet from a number of sources, including the RSPCA, Kennel Club and Dogs Trust. · Pet passports should be examined carefully to ensure the dates of inoculation and age of the dog is consistent. · If you are in any doubt the advice of a vet should be sought. · You should walk away from any seller who will not allow you to do this. Calagran Four Paws Hotel and Quarantine Kennels Company Director Julie Adams said: “We are increasingly engaging with Nottinghamshire County Council’s trading standards team and others on what is becoming a growing problem with fake pet passports and illegally imported puppies. The dealers are not concerned about the welfare of these puppies they are bringing to the UK, and many puppies have not been fully vaccinated so pose a real risk of rabies – jeopardising the safety of other animals and wildlife here in the UK.” For more information please contact Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards on 01623 452005 or Calagran Quarantine Kennel 01246 211281.

Russell Scanlan Sponsors Vital Nottingham Restoration Project Nottingham’s largest independent insurance broker, Russell Scanlan has stepped in to support a vital restoration project in the city centre. The Neville Hoskins Reading Room at the stunning Bromley House Library, a Grade II* listed Georgian townhouse, had been in need of essential refurbishment and repairs for some time, but significant funds raised by patrons and supporters together with private sector support from Russell Scanlan has meant that the project is now close to completion. Renovation work has included the installation of specialist mood lighting, restoring book shelves, reinstating gold detail and repair of an intricate soft plaster ceiling original to the building, at a total cost amounting to £30,000. Bromley House Library, founded in 1816, situated just off Market Square in the centre of Nottingham, is one of the few remaining subscription libraries in the country. The library houses around 40,000 books, some of great value and historic importance to the city and the region. Offering an oasis of calm and tranquillity just yards from busy shops, bus and tram routes, the library also has a beautiful walled garden that its 15,000 subscribers enjoy all year round. Roger Cawkwell is Development Executive at Russell Scanlan: “Bromley House Library is an extraor-
38
dinary building and a huge asset to the city. Although many pass by its doors without even realising it is there, it’s best kept secret status is an immense part of its appeal. Russell Scanlan has developed specialist services for the heritage sector and so we can appreciate what is needed to maintain Bromley House as a historic venue and unique subscriber library. We could not be more delighted to support any project that keeps the library in fine condition for generations to come.” Carol Barstow is the Head Librarian at Bromley House Library: “We have to thank all those that helped realise the renovation of this wonderful room. We are immensely grateful for their support and their enthusiasm. Our supporters and subscribers are part of the long history of this building and we hope that others will now come to visit The Neville Hoskins Reading Room and discover the library for themselves. “We have worked with the team at Russell Scanlan for the past 15 years and they have invested a great deal of time to recognise our rather unique insurance needs and requirements, particularly when we have to move important collections or protect valuable books. I hope that their continued support will encourage other private sector businesses in the city to come and take a look at Bromley House Library. As well as the Neville Hoskins Reading Room we have rooms perfect for off-site meetings, presentations and training sessions.”

For those that want to know more about the library, Bromley House offers free tours fortnightly, which include a look at its own Meridian Line, built into the floor of the library and which demonstrates that before Greenwich Time was adopted
Nottingham time was 4minutes 33 seconds behind Greenwich, and 4 minutes 10 seconds behind St Pauls London! The Neville Hoskins Reading Room was named after Frederick Neville Hoskins (31 December 1925 – 31 December 2005) who was President of the Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire, the county’s principal historical society, on whose council he had served since 1977. He was also closely linked to such groups as the Nottingham Civic Society, the Nottinghamshire Local History Association and the National Trust in Nottinghamshire.
He was a founder member of the Nottinghamshire Building Preservation Trust and a long-standing member of the Southwell diocesan advisory committee, as well as a director of Nottingham’s Bromley House library and a qualified Blue Badge tourist guide.
Russell Scanlan was established in Nottingham in 1881 by Patrick Scanlan, where it has been based ever since. The company’s Nottingham office is located on Wellington Circus in the City centre. Over the years, Russell Scanlan has developed and prospered, and following a successful management buyout in 2007, it expanded into Leicester, opening an office two years later on the outskirts of the City in the Desford area. The firm currently employs 35 staff across its two offices in the Desford area of Leicester and in Nottingham.

Long Eaton Dawnbreakers Support for Nepal Earthquake Disaster The Rotary Club of Long Eaton Dawnbreakers recently held a charity meal to raise much needed funds for the people of Nepal following the two devastating earthquakes.60 Rotarians, family and friends took over the Mount Gurkha Village restaurant in Long Eaton and raised over £500. This will go to provide clean drinking water and shelter for the victims in the aftermath of this terrible natural disaster. Speaking after the event, President of Dawnbreakers, Paul Burrows said” We felt we had to do something for the people of Nepal to ease their suffering. As a club we had already given £2,000 from our charity account but we felt we wanted to do something else. The chance to work with a Nepalese restaurant in our own town seemed an ideal opportunity. The staff at the restaurant ensured we enjoyed some excellent food and that the overall evening was a success. They were very grateful that we were doing something for their people despite them being on the other side of the world.” Anyone interested in joining The Rotary Club of Long Eaton Dawnbreakers or simply finding out more about what we do can visit our website at www.longeatondawnbreakers.org or by contacting Paul on 07539 228682.

Sea bass en papillote with Thai flavours A Summer healthy recipe. Cooking time: Prep:15 mins Cook: 25 mins Serves 2 Make a parcel from baking parchment and let your fish steam to perfection while infusing with garlic, ginger, chilli and lime. Ingredients 2 small seabass, scaled and gutted 12 new potatoes, cleaned small knob salted butter coriander leaves, to serve For the stuffing 2 lemongrass stalks 100g chunk fresh ginger 3 garlic cloves 3 small red chillies, finely chopped zest and juice 1 lime, plus extra wedges to serve, if you like Method Heat oven to 180C/160 fan/gas 4. To prepare the stuffing mixture, bash the lemongrass with the blunt side of your knife to bruise it, then slice it into thin rings. Finely slice the ginger (across the grain) – you can leave the peel on. Squash the unpeeled garlic cloves to release their aroma. Put all the stuffing ingredients into a bowl and mix together. Take a piece of baking parchment about 50cm in length and place the 2 sea bass across its width. Fill the stomach cavities with ¾ of the stuffing mixture, scattering the rest over the fish, then season. Fold the sides of the parchment over the heads and tails of the fish, then roll it into a parcel. This can now be stored in the fridge for a few hrs, if you like. When ready to cook, place on a tray in the oven and bake for 20-25 mins, until the flesh flakes off the bone. While the fish bakes, put the new potatoes in cold water and bring to the boil. Once cooked, drain well, slice in half and return to the pan with a knob of butter. Arrange the new potatoes and sea bass on the plate, still in the parcel, if you like, and sprinkled with the coriander leaves.

Book Review by Clare Lyons
A Delicate Truth by John le Carre There is a timeless beauty about le Carre novels, and this one doesn’t disappoint. It is a wonderful, deceitful story with excellent , if tragic, characters who are all able to stand out with their own well crafted personalities. The story is (of course) about spies and the consequences of a mission gone wrong. The real truth only begins to emerge several years later, and the more investigation the more murky the operation appears to have been. It’s a great spy story, but also raises interesting questions about how operatives are chosen and used, the friction between government and private companies working together and the bravery to ask questions when ones’ morals are at risk. Le Carre is the master of spy novels, the most famous perhaps is Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy which has many film and tv adaptations. He also wrote the beautiful The Constant Gardener, which has also been made into a brilliant film. If you’ve never tried one of his books they are quite mesmerising. Children‛s Choice The Fearsome Beastie by Giles Paley-Phillips It’s always great for kids when the monster is defeated, especially if you are reading before bedtime. This book was a bit more challenging for us as the kids are veggie, however we did love the fact that Granny came to save the day and the gentle rhythm of the story is a joy to read out loud. The illustrations are brilliant and the idea that the monster plays tricks was a long talking point. We had a moment of panic before the children were all saved, but Gran keeping watch on the very back page was extremely comforting. Paley-Phillips has also written Princess Stay Awake (review on the blog) and Tamara Small and the Monsters’ Ball. www.mrsaverageevaluates.wordpress.com www.letyourselfgrow.org 56

Lady Bay Open Gardens & Fete Nottingham Saturday 4 & Sunday 5 July 2015, 2pm – 6pm Now in its 24th year, the ever popular Lady Bay Open Gardens will be taking place on the weekend of Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 July 2015 from 2pm to 6pm. If you've been before, you'll know what a great day out it is for all age groups. If you haven't, you're in for a real treat. The trail is in a very pleasant and mainly Victorian suburban setting between the Grantham Canal and the River Trent. There will be at least 18 family gardens of all shapes and sizes to see over the 2 days, including 6 new ones, never before opened. And as well as a feast of flowers, you're likely to see small cottage gardens, vegetable plots, wildflower meadows, formal landscaped gardens and plenty of ponds and wildlife. There will also be plant sales and information on gardening and the environment. People love to look around to pinch people's ideas or just have a good nosey! There will be plenty of entertainment with activities for kids, crafts and live music. The Community Choir, Belly Dancers and Kid's Zumba are already lined up for Saturday at various venues. On Sunday the Sea Shanties will be performing at 2.30pm at the Lady Bay Pub and 4.30pm at the Poppy and Pint. Noah’s Ark Fun Run Noah’s Ark family fun run is set in the beautiful grounds of Wollaton Hall and Deer Park, in the heart of Nottingham. The park is set in five hundred acres of spectacular gardens with resident deer wandering the grounds. Children and families are encouraged to dress up as their favourite animal pair in the style of Noah’s Ark. Participants can choose between two routes that are named after the resident deer breeds in the park, Fallow (1 mile) or Red (2.5 miles). The Fallow route is suitable for younger children, pushchairs and wheelchair friendly. The Red route is the longer route worth the extra leg work for the spectacular views around the lake! Both routes will be fully stewarded and signposted with water stations along the way. There are also plenty of good spots for spectators to cheer runners on. Every participant gets a fantastic Noah’s Ark medal and goody bag! When participants have decided which route would be best for them, they can register online through Active Network. The Erewash Valley Cycling Club is launching a summer recruitment drive to mark its 35th anniversary. New members of all ages and abilities are being sought to boost numbers on the club's Wednesday and Sunday runs. "Our midweek social rides are aimed at older and retired folk who want to enjoy a gentle ride in good company," says organising secretary Malcolm Griffin. "Sunday riders have a choice of short or long runs depending on their abilities... and nobody gets left behind!" Most rides use cycle tracks, canal towpaths and quiet roads where possible, though some riding in traffic is inevitable. "We would like to see more women joining the club, particularly the Wednesday section," adds Malcolm. Details from Malcolm on (0115) 939 7060 (leave message), e.mail malcolmgriffin@talktalk.net or write to 6 Westerlands, Stapleford, Notts, NG9 7JG.

Bee Vigilant!
How to encourage Bees into your garden. With the global decline of bees,
it has never been more important to support the pollinator population in your garden.
The Royal Horticultural Society reports Britain as having 25 species of bumblebees, of which about 11 commonly visit garden flowers. They also state that there are about 260 species of solitary bee in Britain, all of which have been in decline in the last 50 years for a variety of reasons. How to encourage bees Perhaps the best way to encourage bees of all type into you garden is by providing them with flowers from February to November. Five ways to help bees: 1.Clumps of bee-friendly plants in sunny places will be more attractive than plants that are scattered or in shade. 2.Double or multi-petaled cultivars of plants are best avoided as they may lack pollen and/or nectar, or it may be difficult for bees to reach them. 3. Also avoid pollen-free cultivars of some plants, such as sunflowers, that are grown as florists’ flowers.
72
4.Use pesticides sparingly. Those based on fatty acids or plant oils and extracts pose little danger to bees but will not control all pests. Avoid spraying open flowers and if possible do spraying in the evening when bees are less active 5.Become a beekeeper. Details of county beekeepers associations and training courses can be found on the British Beekeepers’ Association website www.bbka. org.uk 4.Provide nest sites for solitary bees. Some will nest in hollow stems, such as bamboo canes or herbaceous plant stems. Hole diameters in the range 2-8mm are required. Cardboard nest tubes can be bought in garden centres. Holes 2-8mm diameter can be drilled in fence posts or logs. Place these nest sites in sunny positions. Some solitary bees nest in the ground, either in bare soil or short turf. They will find their own nest sites, so tolerate the small mounds of soil deposited by the female bees when they excavate their nest tunnels. Bumblebee nest boxes can be purchased but they are often ignored by queen bumblebees. They prefer to find their own nest sites down tunnels dug by mice or in grass tussocks.

10/06/2015 12:29
Will I get stung? Getting stung by bees in your garden is unlikely, as long as you treat bees with respect. All female bees have stings, but solitary bees are not at all aggressive and only using their stings in self-defence if roughly handled.
Late summer flowers attracting bees include angelica, aster, buddleia, cardoon, cornflower, dahlia (single-flowered), delphinium, eryngium, fuchsia, globe thistle, ivy, lavender, penstemon, scabious and sedum.
Similarly bumblebees and honeybees are unlikely to sting while they are going about their business of collecting nectar and pollen if they are left alone. Avoid disturbing bumblebee nests or standing too close to a bee hive unless you are wearing a beekeeper’s suit. Flowers to tempt Bees Hawthorn and potentilla, part of the rose family seem to be irresistible to bees, as are fennel, angelica, cow parsley and sedum flowers. snapdragons and heathers, are also all favourite feeding grounds for bees. Spring flowers attracting bees include bugle, bluebells crab apple, daodil, the beautiful flowering cherry and currant, forget-me-not, hellebore, pulmonaria, pussy willow, rhododendron, rosemary, viburnum and thrift. To tempt the bees in early summer plant aquilegia, astilbe, campanula, everlasting sweet pea, fennel, geranium, potentilla, stachys, teasel, thyme and verbascum.
Make Your Garden a Home for Bees The more flowers you plant, the more varieties of bees you will attract into your garden, and the more flowers and vegetables will be pollinated. This is particularly important for fruit and vegetable growers as apples, plums, pears, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, red currants, gooseberries and strawberries, broad beans, runner beans and some members of the marrow-pumpkin family all rely on insects to bring about pollination. Be conscious that you should never use pesticides on plants while they are in flower, as this will harmbees.
